Book Description
It is the late 1930s-the high-pitched tail end of the infamous years between the wars. Berlin is a night city, pulsing with the neon signs and imported jazz of ten thousand cabarets. Daniel Saporta a.k.a. Salazar-a Sephardic Jew passing as a Spaniard-is the celebrated owner of Klub Kaukasus, an oriental cabaret touted by the local scandal sheet as the definitive Café Berlin. Playing host to high-ranking Nazi officers unaware of his true identity, Daniel caters to appetites both pure and perverse, providing his clientele with first-rate food, drink, and women.
It is 1943. Daniel Saporta is in hiding. From his cramped, unheated attic cubicle, he writes his story about the years in Berlin leading up to his concealment. Utterly accurate in its depiction of historical and military events and astoundingly rich in detail, Café Berlin, sold in five countries, creates a vivid and compelling picture of a city and a time that fascinated and appalled the rest of the world half a century ago.
Customer Reviews:
fast spaced, unputdownable.......2003-11-27
This is one of the best books I ever read. Historically authentic, thrilling, decadent, sublime prose with an ingenious plot.
One of the Best books I've ever read..........2003-08-22
I found a flimsy proof version of this book at a garage sale circa 1998 and it has since been read by almost every member of my family and crossed the country two times.
If you like the idea of pre war Berlin cabarets and espionage, then I promise you you will more than like this book.
Just Beautiful.......2001-08-18
This book was absolutely thrilling, heartbreaking and enlightening. I actually read it with a pencil to underline passages, foreign expressions and historical references to conduct further research---and I've never before done that. Although fiction, this book entices the reader to learn more about the era in which it took place. As a student of German, French, and Arabic, I was especially appreciative of the way Mr. Nebenzal included the spice of foreign words and references. (Showing respect for the intelligence of his readers.) This is rarely seen in books today. As for the story itself, the characters are rich and moving---the descriptions are vivid. The story is mesmerizing. This is a must read---But make sure you're not busy--you won't be able to put this book down!
Impossible to put down!.......2000-03-27
I read this book in a matter of days because I just could not put it down. I recommended it to a friend who said that he was reading it on an airplane that slid off the runway and he didn't even notice! (True story)

Book Description
Kyo and his party face off at the Fifth Gate--in the battle to kill off Shinrei, Kyo uses Mizuchi and Suzaku, his most powerful attacks, but they aren't enough. With waterwyrms squeezing the life out of Yuya and Shinrei refusing to take it out of her body, the only way to save her now is to kill Shinrei!
Customer Reviews:
All Star Manga.......2007-07-08
Worthy series to own! Action, action, action! Lots of plots, and some philosophy too. Enjoy!
Recycled Goodness.......2006-02-24
If there's anything that Kamijyo-san can do well, it's the recycling of the same plotline over and over and over and over...well, you get the idea. Following where the last book left off, after Kyo's defeat of Hotaru, the gang are now at the Second Gate. Akira is pitted against two sickeningly pathetic villains: twin nurses Saishi and Saisei.
This is the oddest attempt yet by Kamijyo-san to appeal to fanboy fantasies. The action does pick up, however, once it becomes apparent that Saisei is not as one-dimensional as she seems. While this series is rife with our favorite characters getting "serious" and the constant hint that Kyo is simply waiting to unleash his inner demon, Kamijyo-san manages the astounding feat of holding the reader's attention after 16 trite yet addictive volumes.
The plot is absolutely absurd most of the time and Yuya is constantly dangled as the damsel-in-distress. This time, her life hangs in the balance as the clock ticks and her life will soon be snuffed out by a waterwyrm (created by Shinrei and exacerbated by the aforementioned nurses) in her heart. The only morsels keeping the reader's appetite alive are the promises of revealing Kyo's past (including more of his connections with the Crimson King, Kyoshiro, Sakuya, and the Four Emperors), his terrible power, and the potential romantic interest in Yuya.
Tension and anticipation are what sell Samurai Deeper Kyo yet after pages and pages building up Saishi's fantastic powers, Akira's relatively easy victory seems more afterthought than actual climactic battle. Too much time is spent lamenting Saisei's "tragic" past and the attempt to infuse humanity into Akira is touching but forced.
Why do I rate this volume four stars out of five? Akimine Kamijyo accomplishes the only thing he set out to do: hook readers and keep them on board. Yes, this story is much too drawn out. Yes, the plot is repetitive. Yes, so many boss fights in succession without sufficient character development has reduced SDK to a dull, "tournament"-style manga. Yet, he must be doing something right. I bought it, didn't I?
Its Great.......2004-07-03
Ive only gotten to book five and episode 8 but I love the story line and the characters. Its just al around awesome! Akimine-san is an awesome artist and story writer and i look up to her as those.
awsome.......2004-07-01
Volume five of samurai deeper kyo is great. Out of the many books they made so far I think volume five is the best. I think if you were going to get a samurai deeper kyo book you should buy this one beacuse you will enjoy it very much. I give this book 5 stars.

Good, but not Bucher-Jones' best.......2000-02-26
The basic idea of Ghost Devices is brilliant, but it falters somewhat in the execution (something common to many of the post-Doctorectomy NAs). It's certainly not a bad book, but it's not the author's best; the MacGuffin in "The Death of Art" was just as good and the plotting was much smoother.
Douglas Adams meets Iain Banks' "the Culture".......1998-12-01
I enjoy the style of both authors, and found that Simon Bucher-Jones did well in providing a story with both humorous and thought-provoking societal and science elements.

FRIENDLY WARNING!!!!.......2007-09-01
Please don't mistake this book for another one of those cute, novelty regional cookbooks and miss out on a true gem to add to your collection. The recipes are simply AWESOME and it's not the same ol' stuff you find in every other baking cookbook. This one strikes a perfect balance...ALL of the recipes are unique enough to peak your interest yet familiar enough to try. You will reach for this book time and time again. A cookbook well done! I love it!!!
This is a nice cookbook with beautiful photographs.......2007-08-29
I just received this book last weekend. I have paged through it several times to decide which recipe to try first. Some of the recipes are unique, some are pure Texas homecooking, but they all sound delicious. The photographs are beautiful. The book contains mostly dessert recipes, but also entrees, drinks, etc. I recommend it to anyone who wants to try a new dessert or add a new book to their collection.
Calling All Dessert Cookbook Collectors.......2007-08-23
I read about Rebecca's bakery and cookbook in a magazine article. I looked it up the cookbook on Amazon so I could read the reviews and decided to order it. I'm so glad I did because I LOVE this cookbook. I've only made the Tropical Carrot Cake so far and it was delicious. Everyone that tasted it at my church raved about it. I look forward to trying the other recipes too. Besides desserts, there a section on lunches and light dinners too. Most of the recipes sound simple, but are very unique. You won't find these recipes in other cookbooks (i.e. Creme Brulee French Toast, Dulce de Leche Macaroons, Peanut Buttercups with Peanut-Penuche Icing, Almond Bliss German Chocolate Cake). Also, another good thing, a lot of these recipes have been tried and proven great with her bakery/cafe customers. The book itself is a beautiful book. The pages are glossy and the color pictures are beautiful. I love looking through the book even if I'm not planning on cooking.
The Pastry Queen.......2007-06-27
The Pastry Queen cookbook has delicious desserts. The Tuxedo cake is our favorite. The recipes are easy to follow, and have great ingredients. I have recommended this book to all my friends. I hope the author will put out another book soon.
"a mighty fine book, lil' lady!!".......2007-06-23
Yahoo!! A Texas-size book with Texas-size desserts, all on account of one powerhouse lady. Reading her story in the Introduction of the book was as sweet as the recipes that she shares with you. A surprise and humble beginning in the baking world turned into a top rate career for Ms. Rather, and you feel the joy along with her, as you delve further into the sweet-laden pages.
You begin to think that you could just pick up and move on over to Fredericks, Texas and feel like you've been there all along. The casual and comfortable style of writing of both Rebecca Rather, and writer, Alison Oresman, as well as the incredibly delicious recipes, make you want to get started on any page in this heavy, welcoming, and beautifully photographed cookbook. At the same time, Ms. Rather encourages you to play with and modify anything that would suit your tastebuds. There is nothing pretentious or difficult to accomplish in her directions; she pretty much makes you feel at ease, and more importantly, that she is next to you, sharing her knowledge.

INDEX
My only criticism would be in the Introduction portion, where she talks about some of the recipes. It seems that the pages she gives, in which the recipes are supposedly located, are wrong. But since those errors are only in the intro, yet correctly paged in the index, I don't know how much that might matter.
The Pastry Queen Cookbook is one of those volumes of baking and cooking that celebrates the charm and warmth of the South. They are, respectfully speaking, very simple for anyone to make, yet fancy enough to serve at even the most "proper" events. Thanks Rebecca!! Much obliged.

Customer Reviews:
Creative fun ways to make sushi!.......2002-04-18
Great sushi cookbook with photos for every recipe! Lots of creative sushi ideas for holidays & other special occasions. Colorful rice & decorating ideas can be used for tasty meals or snacks. There are also recipes for other foods that can accompany sushi. One of my favorite desert items was "Deep Fried Sesame Dumplings" is often served in asian restaurants.
One thing missing from this cookbook is the recipe for "sakura-denbu" (mashed & seasoned fish) which if you have the "Sushi For Parties" book it's called "Oboro" on page 25. If you don't have that cook book here's the recipe:
Oboro Ingredients: 7 oz (200g) ground white flesh fish, 1 tbsp sugar, 2 tbsp sake, dash red food coloring. Directions: Wrap ground fish in a cloth & wash in water using a squeezing action. Change water twice & get rid of fat. Squeeze out excess water & grind in a mortar. Add food coloring dissolved in sake & sugar, grind so that the color becomes uniform. Transfer to a saucepan & cook over low heat. Mix well with chopsticks until fluffy. Spread on a tray & let cool.
I highly recommend this cookbook! It's well worth adding to your cookbook collection. Your family & friends will enjoy all the fun sushi you can make! :)
poor.......2001-08-01
come on ! HAM in sushis..... !! maybe beautiful sushi design but sushi use to be with fish, no ?
A fun alternative to formal sushi........2000-11-03
I recently bought Fun & Fancy Sushi after I discovered that I am sensitive to wheat products, much like an allergy.
Fun & Fancy Sushi offers easy alternatives to the sushi one usually finds at a sushi bar in a Japanese restaurant. If the thought of eating raw fish is worrisome, this is the book for you, because with the exception of fish roe, the ingredients are either vegetable, cooked fish or meat. Many of the sushi recipes offered are balls of rice (the Japanese equivalent to sandwiches) with various flavorings added. In addition, there are recipes for more elaborate and colorful sushi for parties.
Along with the recipes, the authors include tips on how to properly cook in a rice cooker, as well as historical information and regional variations. The numerous color photos on almost every page are enticing and helpful.
My only warning is that this book is probably best for those who have tried to cook Asian food before, since there are a few things left out, like what kind of rice to use. For instance, Uncle Ben's rice will not do, you'll need to use either the cal-rose rice or jasmine rice for these recipes to work. Also, if you do not have access to an Asian market, and you lack some creativity, you might be puzzled by some (not all) of the recipes. I've given it rating of 5 stars because I've looked at a number of similar books, and this one is the best I've seen. It gives traditional and modern recipes without being too outlandish (one book I saw had a recipe for Nutella sushi).
Overall, it's a good cookbook and it will provide you with some healthful alternatives to a grilled cheese sandwich, as well as some fun additions to your party that will amaze your friends.
Simple and Fun book.......2000-04-26
This book is really simple in terms of teaching you about the art of sushi. In addition to that, it has some really fun things that you can make. I had never thought of sushi as an art until I saw this book.
Book Description
Fostoria is one of the best known and most admired names in American glass. Probably more brides and homemakers have received gifts and purchased glass made at the Fostoria factory in Moundsville, West Virginia than from any other glass company. This is the first book to present all of this fascinating and highly collectible glass through hundreds of color photographs. Pieces featured range from rarely seen examples of Victorian pattern glass from the early years in Fostoria, Ohio through the introduction of color, the popular American and Coin patterns, to the scarce and unusual, even unique, items. Any collector, dealer, or student of American glass will delight in the beautiful glassware presented here. In addition to more than 400 beautiful color photographs of Fostoria objects with detailed captions, the book contains labels, color catalog pages, an illustrated styles chart with over 1000 entries, a chronology, index and updated values. The first to bring all this information together, this book will fascinate and inform the advanced collector as well as the beginner.

Book Description
The purpose of Ratiśāstra was to provide instruction and advice to young Hindu couples before and after they cohabit as a couple. The desired outcome of lovemaking has always been, according to Hindu law and custom, the production of male issues. Conjugal love or "Ratiśāstra" is the means to assure that auspicious result.
Kenneth Zysk's Conjugal Love in India is a study of traditional Hindu ideas about love in the domestic abode, and deals with the two principal Sanskrit treatises on the subject, Ratiśāstra and Ratiramaṇa. These two works, leaving no stone unturned, cover every aspect of conjugal life, from the finding and selection of a suitable pair to procreation. With an introduction that situates the doctrine of conjugal love (ratiśāstra) and the texts that explain it in the history of brahminic scholasticism.
This work will help to elucidate aspects of Indian history and culture in the medieval and modern periods, and will provide a good basis for comparative studies with similar themes in other cultures.

If at first you don't succeed... well, actually, Arthur and Barbara Gelb's 1962 book about Eugene O'Neill was a resounding success by any measure; for years, theirs was the definitive account of the Nobel Prize-winning playwright and his work. Far from resting on their laurels, however, the Gelbs spent the next 38 years continuing their research, interviewing O'Neill's family and friends and digging up new sources of information. Now they've produced O'Neill: Life with Monte Cristo, both a rewrite of their 1962 biography and a major literary event in its own right. The first installment of a projected trilogy, O'Neill uses the plays themselves as a jumping-off point for an exploration of the playwright's life, including substantial discussion of his colorful father, his Irish ancestors, and his troubled early years. This later work gains not only from its new source materials and widened scope but also from what the Gelbs note is a "changed sensibility"--both in themselves and the world around them. Those 38 intervening years have brought increased personal understanding and remarkable developments in O'Neill scholarship, they write, and O'Neill benefits from both. Marked by meticulous attention to detail and daring leaps in chronology, the Gelbs' biography is a remarkable reevaluation of one of our most violent and original American talents. --Greta Kline
Book Description
Never before in the annals of American letters have biographers returned to their subject with the aim of radically rethinking and retelling their story form beginning to end.
Arthur and Barbara Gelb's O'Neill: Life with Monte Cristo is the first volume of the completely rewritten biography of America's only Nobel Prize-winning playwright. The Gelbs originally published the first full-scale life of the dramatist in 1962, nine years after his death. In the intervening thirty-eight years, they have conducted extensive interviews and have unearthed masses of hitherto unknown or withheld material-letters, diaries, scenarios-from which they have fashioned this supremely definitive life of O'Neill.
The Gelbs take O'Neill from his lonely childhood through his seafaring, adventure-filled, and often self-destructive youth. This new research and perspective probes O'Neill's psychological torment over his mother's rejection and his father's benevolent tyranny, his suicide attempt, his struggle with alcoholism, and his tumultuous love affairs. This first volume follows O'Neill to his first triumph on Broadway with Beyond the Horizon that set him on the path toward the ultimate brilliant achievements of The Iceman Cometh, A Moon for the Misbegotten, and what is universally regarded as America's greatest play, Long Day's Journey into Night.
Customer Reviews:
Incredible biography.......2000-08-16
This revised version of the Gelb's famous biography from the sixties is an incredible read. It traces the life of O'Neill from his early beginnings to his first Broadway play, Beyond the Horizon. One gets an in-depth view of his life with his parents and brother. Monte Cristo provides the modern reader with an enriched biographical background that really elucidates aspects of O'Neill's masterwork, Long Day's Journey Into Night. This biography is clearly written, thoughtful, provocative, and interesting. It's definitely one of the great literary biographies of an American writer.
