5 out of 5 stars hysterically funny monologue of a petty Spanish woman.......2001-07-31

Delibes's Cinco horas con Mario (Five hours with Mario) is a stirring portrait of the situation of Spain, what effects the Civil War and Franco's dictatorship left on the minds of the people in Spain. And for those who are not very familiar with Spanish history, it is also a witty satire of the narrow-mindedness of the petty bourgeois. The Mario in the title is a typical representative of the Spanish free-thinking intellectuals, who dies in a heart-attack and during the five hours in the title his wife speaks out in a long monologue her frustration. It slowly become more and more hysterical, until at the end it gets reduced to repeating the same obsessive thoughts over and over again. In some ways the book can be considered a parody of the psychological novels, when a hypersensitive person recollects his or her memories, rich in subtle details. Here, this sensibility gets replaced by hysteria and instead of tinged recollections we are offered the frustrations of the primal desires of Mario's wife. For example every second page she returns to her biggest frustration: Mario did not have a car. Moreover, he used to ride a bike, he used to meet his strange Socialist friends, and was filled with strange thought like the liberation of women. The irony of the situation is emphasised in the fact that Mario now is dead and cannot answer to his wife, which can also suggest the futility of her ideas, many of them pretty eerie, like when she talks about the good days in the air-raid shelters. Thus, the humour has also a taste of morbidity, especially when probably, like most of her ideas, these kind of thoughts must be a cliché among the Spanish petit bourgeois. All in all, this book is the splendid representation of human pettiness, a catalogue of Spanish (and international) common places.

From the supplier: Miguel Delibes's Cinco horas con Mario consists mainly of the thoughts of a newly bereaved widow, Carmen. It is proposed that Cinco horas is a book about reading and interpretation, giving rise to oppositional readings, undertaken by Carmen herself. It is argued that Carmen undertakes a reading that demonstrates the ideological nature of Mario's liking for literature, as well as the ideological nature of literature itself.

                      AMERICA'S GREAT HOPE--AND GREATER TERROR

The end of the Civil War and the rise of magical talents had brought unheard-of dangers to the West. Signers and scribblers and chatterers called up nightmare conjurations more dreadful than those that already roamed the unsettled land. Even a bullet-stopping sheriff with as much talent as Jake Bird was hard-pressed to keep Medicine Rock going when towns from Canada to Mexico were being abandoned.

Unknown to the settlers, a greater calamity yet was stalking them. Using Buffalo Bill Cody as his agent, robber baron Jay Gould was laying tracks for America's first transcontinental railroad. Medicine Rock was chosen as the rail point where East would meet West. But the honor concealed catastrophe, for with his strange blue-green steel rails, Gould intended to rob the entire territory of its magic.

Bullets would fly, blood would flow, and Buffalo Bill, Sheriff Jake, and the mysterious Rainmaker would need all their skills to defeat America's most powerful evil . . .

I thought the Devils Tower was a great read. This sequel is even better!!! I literally could not put this book down! It was like a roller coaster ride. Full of twists and turns everywhere. You cannot go wrong by taking the time to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Tops even the first book!.......1998-01-07

I really enjoyed Sumner's DEVIL'S TOWER, so much so that when I came across this one I was almost scared to read it. But it only took a chapter for me to know this book was even better than the first one. Jake Bird and the citizens of Medicine Rock are back. This time they're facing an evil scheme meant to drain all the "talents" from the land. More action, more crazy characters, more wild magic and stunts than the first one. Hey, Hollwood! This would make a great movie!

                      5 out of 5 stars A very original concept-makes an exceptional page-turner........1997-04-23

Devil's Engine was a very stimulating read in that the concept is one that hasn't been heavily used or explored. I am now trying to find Devil's Tower, the book before this one in sequence, and I cannot wait to read that one either. The characters are all very realistic, everyone will have certain people in their lives that will correspond to the characters' traits. A very fresh idea backed up by a strong plot, very good storytellingprowess and the aforementioned convincing characters. I'm not really a big fan of westerns, but this one does not disappoint

5 out of 5 stars Ian Myles Slater on A Fantasy of Medieval China.......2003-09-16

"Jade Enchantress", published in 1982, is one of two fantasy novels set in medieval China which appeared near the end of E. Hoffmann Price's long career as a professional writer. (He was a friend and contemporary of H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard.) Like "Devil Wives of Li Fong," the story combines a likeable but imperfect hero, several beautiful women (often, but not always, of supernatural origin), and a fair amount of Chinese history and "local color." For example, antagonisms between Buddhists and Taoists are one of the driving forces behind events in "Devil Wives," while in "Jade Enchantress" government corruption and foreign war keep things moving. No prior knowledge is really necessary, although anyone who enjoys either of the books will probably want to find out more about the Celestial Hierarchy, Chinese demons, herbal medicine, and any number of other topics.

"Jade Enchantress" includes entertaining details of the workings and personnel of the popular Chinese pantheon (apparently correct for some times and places), and (naturally) a fair amount of traditional lore about that obviously magical substance, jade. The Lawrence Schwinger cover art (in shades of jade green, naturally) is beautiful, and appropriate without revealing much about the plot.

Price, who emerged from the pulp fiction era of stock characterizations and ethnic stereotyping, tended to fall into these traps (albeit from a pro-Chinese perspective) even in his late science fiction, like "Operation Misfit" (1980) and its sequels.. Fortunately, in "Jade Enchantress," the main focus is on Chinese characters and social roles and outsiders are seen through their eyes, so the alert reader is invited to interpret their perceptions as character development or plot devices instead of authorial opinions. (A similar technique was used by Robert van Gulik to portray Judge Dee as a "perfect" -- meaning highly conventional -- Chinese official in his series of mysteries also set in T'ang Dynasty China.)

It is a pity that Price did not write more such novels -- and that those he did write have not been kept in print.

4 out of 5 stars Good if you know what you're doing........2007-06-04

                              B. Marold's review was excellent, so I'll only add two comments, a plus and a minus. The plus is that Dave has some truly excellent party menus in this book. He has several recipes that build off a base recipe (e.g., the crostini recipes), so you're able to prepare a few different items quickly. The minus is that you probably need some experience in the kitchen if you're going to prepare the other recipes. He provides cook times, but doesn't elaborate on what something should look like when it's done. Since ovens vary significant, it's a problem if you don't know how to tell by sight or testing whether a dish is done. Also, I'd just concur with B. Marold's assessment that Dave may have useful suggestions for minimizing costs, but undoes some of these when he's using expensive meats. This weekend, I made the warm goat cheese salad, dill salmon, and mini fudgey chocolate cakes, and the ingredients I had to buy cost $50 for two people. It's a good cookbook, but you can find better out there.

5 out of 5 stars Easy, quick recipes that anyone can make!.......2007-02-22

Usually when I read a recipe book, there are a couple things I would actually make, but most seem too time consuming or use a lot of weird ingredients. This book addresses these concerns, and is tremendous for providing easy, quick recipes that anyone can make! I highly recommend it and will probably purchase it as a gift for others as well. The author is really funny too - I am constantly amused when I cook dinner from this book!

3 out of 5 stars Good ideas with a weak execution of some of the basics, but I liked it.......2006-07-09

I am not familiar with Lieberman's show on "The Food Network", so I took this book at face value when I was browsing cookbooks at my local Boarders. I'll give Lieberman this, he takes a very engaging and appealing photograph. I have to agree with the M. Borard's observation that the book is so weakly organized that it seems to throw away much of the leverage that his exposure on TFN might have given him. In spite of the title, this isn't really all that accessible to novice cooks (or those on stringent budgets), contains some problematic advice (garlic presses? Hellman's mayonaisse when it is so easy to make your own?) and doesn't really contain all that many recipes for the beginning cook. His section on grilling seems as if it could get a newbie cook in serious trouble with botched results.

And at least twice I've gotten into trouble with his time and temperature recommendations - I charcoaled 1 1/2 pounds of London Broil because his recipe insists that it should sit under the broiler for 15 minutes on one side and 8 on the other (on the top setting for the rack) for a 1-2 inch thick cut. When I pulled it out after only 10 minutes, the meat was already toast. (It makes me wonder if the electricity and natural gas on the East Coast are somehow 'weaker' than in the MidWest, or if the stoves Lieberman uses are older, less efficient models.)

Still, I like it. Operating with less than six months of experience as a self-taught cook, I've tried several of the recipes and they've turned out more than satisfactory results, once I learned to discount some nonsensical fantasies about oven times (see above). The food photography does a great job of giving you an idea of what to aim for, which is worth a few extra bucks to me over "plain text" collections such as Mills' "Cheap. Fast. Good."

I can't see an accomplished cook or trained chef getting anything out of this collection, but it's been worth the purchase price for me. And Lieberman is young, after all, and I am sure he will put better collections together as his skill in the art of 'cookbookery' matures.

4 out of 5 stars Charming chef, average food.......2006-06-02

Lets face it, Dave Lieberman is hot, the food is okay. This is a good common sense book, nothing special. Would reccommend it as a graduation gift/gift for someone who is just getting started in the kitchen. It has a few good ideas for more expereinced cooks, but its unlikely to be the cookbook that you will keep coming back to. Nice pictures and layout.

5 out of 5 stars Approachable recipes from an approachable guy.......2006-04-09

Dave Lieberman is a breath of fresh air to Food Network's list of 'celebrity' chefs. He has the unjaded enthusiasm of a newbie, the approachability that Tyler Florence tries to have but comes off as a bit insincere, and a genuine love of cooking that transcends both the electronic and written medium.

None of the recipes in Dave's first book are impossible for the entry-level cook, and he does a good job of explaining cooking basics (what tools are a must-have and what to keep a running stock of in the pantry) and then delving into easy-to-make recipes that won't cost a fortune to make.

While some of the fare is a bit college student-esque, most of the things I've made from this book are actually pretty good crowd-pleasers. The fact that Dave takes a Nigella Lawson approach to his book and its recipes - he has a very 'talky' style that makes it seem as though he's sharing his recipes with friends - makes it all the more laid back and refreshing.

Can't wait to see what his next book, due in October, does to expand his love of fresh ingredients and great flavors while at the same time keeping things relatively simple and affordable.

                              Book Description

In the tiny kitchen author Denise Medved has taken a refreshing and unique approach to an entertaining and cookbook and has pulled together a collection of nearly one hundred recipes that can be made in a tiny kitchen.

"For years I lived in apartments in Manhattan and Old Town, Alexandria where I had unbelievably small kitchens and minimal kitchen equipment and supplies. I loved to cook and entertain so I had to figure out how to do it successfully with such limitations. I had some great cookbooks but couldn't use most of the recipes because I didn't have the appropriate equipment, utensils, preparation room or storage. There were no books on the market addressing stylish entertaining and cooking in a small space. So I decided to write one sharing great recipes, menus and easy tips and hints."

The book is organized by easy to read chapters from appetizers to desserts and everything in between with the final chapter, The Tiny Kitchen Entertains, offering hints on entertaining and eight great menus from a romantic dinner for two to a cocktail party for fifty. Recipes range from hearty down home cooking such as chili to coconut curry chicken for the more sophisticated palate.

The book's appearance is crisp, clean and easy to follow with one recipe per page. Eight beautifully styled color photographs adorn the book eliciting a sudden urge to test the recipes. They range from a very elegant dessert of chocolate mousse in a meringue nest styled with Chinese export Armorial and Meissen china, Tiffany's Audobon flatware, accompanied by a Val St. Lambert crystal saucer champagne and Godiva chocolates to chili and bourbon hot dogs in earthenware accompanied by Fritos(r) and hot sauces all stylishly laid out on a coffee table in front of a roaring fire. The book is the highest of quality with a cheerful watercolor by local Old Town, Alexandria artist, Todd Healy, depicting the author's tiny kitchen in Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia.

In addition to the recipes the book is laced with humorous anecdotes as Medved tells it like it is. Witness the fish chapter and the ladies' luncheon menu editorial.

Governor Lowell P. Weicker, Jr. (whose famous bourbon hot dogs are among the recipes) says it all in his testimonial, "Tiny though the kitchen might be, the recipes, like the author, are hugely beyond belief."

the tiny kitchen has fabulous time tested recipes, menus and entertaining ideas presented with finesse and style. Medved doesn't take herself too seriously, rather it is evident she loves good food, cooking and entertaining and above all else, has fun doing it.

the tiny kitchen was released in the Washington, DC marketplace on December 13, 2001 available through he author only and has sold nearly 2,000 copies, many people coming back for more copies. It is beginning to make it into the major retailers.

This book is really great. Quick and easy recipes, great variety. For the person who enjoys entertaining but doesn't have time to be cooped up in the kitchen for days on end!!

The recipes are fine -- they're simple, fast and the results are good. However, this book really needs a good editing. There's a good story to be told and a decent idea, but the writing could really use some polishing.

5 out of 5 stars The best cookbook ever.......2002-02-23

So many cookbooks are not written for real people. Real people have limited space. They do not have an arsenal of stainless-steel equipment, and they want to prepare meals that are good, creative, but do not want to spend the whole weekend trying to outdo Thomas Keller. Denise Sullivan is the only cookbook writer on earth who seems to understand this, and write a cookbook that actual people can actually use. And the food is GOOD!

The book is beautiful. It's well-written -- it's a joy to read. The recipes work -- they're delicious. If I could only have one cookbook in my kitchen, this would be it. Buy it.

I have used many of these projects and loved it. The ribbon trays I have given as gifts were well received, and once I got the glass cut, were just gorgeous. I found baskets on sale one day, and they just all came together, not as expensive as I thought. I think the ribbon cost the most, but still, a really great gift for not a lot of money in my case. Recipes, of course, and things like candlemaking are showcased here. So glad I bought it!

                                    1 out of 5 stars poo.......1999-09-08

I am usually a Martha fan but I see these books of hers as an attempt to just suck more money out of us. Almost everything in this book can be found in past issues of her magazine. If I would have known that I would have went to the library and decided what was best myself.I believe all of her books are this way---I mean samples from her show and magazine. Nothing new or surprising.

5 out of 5 stars Make your Christmas one "from the heart"........1996-12-09

Martha Stewart presents some of the most beautiful and creative ideas to make Chirstmas special. Her gift and wrapping ideas allow for the kind of creativity that will make each gift truly special and "from the heart".The decorating ideas she presents are truly beautiful and have given rise to many new holiday traditions in our home and in the homes of the many friends that have borrowed this book from me. The fact that she provides the names and addresses of the mail order houses she gets her supplies from for all of the wonderful things she shows in the book is a god-send.

                                                          Book Description

This exceptional collection provides new insight into the life of North Carolina writer and activist Paul Green (1894-1981), the first southern playwright to attract international acclaim for his socially conscious dramas. Green, who taught philosophy and drama at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1927 for In Abraham's Bosom, an authentic drama of black life. Among his other Broadway productions were Native Son and Johnny Johnson. From the 1930s onward, Green created fifteen outdoor historical productions known as symphonic dramas, thereby inventing a distinctly American theater form. These include The Lost Colony (1937), which is still performed today.

Laurence Avery has selected and annotated the 329 letters in this volume from over 9,000 existing pieces. The letters, to such figures as Sherwood Anderson, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, John Dos Passos, Zora Neale Hurston, and others interested in the arts and human rights in the South, are alive with the intellect, buoyant spirit, and sensitivity to the human condition that made Green such an inspiring force in the emerging New South. Avery's introduction and full bibliography of the playwright's works and first productions give readers a context for understanding Green's life and times.
