At 62, ever-dependable oil man Duane Moore ditches his pickup and starts walking everywhere--deeply deviant behavior in one-stoplight Thalia, Texas. "It occurred to him one day--not in a flash, but through a process of seepage, a kind of gas leak into his consciousness--that most of his memories, from his first courtship to the lip of old age, involved the cabs of pickups," Larry McMurtry writes. Yet oddly enough, Duane's marriage, four children and nine grandchildren, his career highs and lows, all occurred when he was nowhere near his vehicle. Within days he has moved into his cabin on a hill, reacquired his dog, Shorty the Sixth ("an air of slight guilt was typical of all the Shortys"), and begun to think on these things. Of course, this brings on an additional problem: "He realized that for the first time in his life he had too much time to think; of course he had wanted more time to think, but that was probably because he hadn't realized how tricky thinking could be."

Luckily for readers, Duane's attempts to go off the grid are far from successful. Thus do we have the deep pleasures of his comical and complex encounters with his wife, Karla, and family, not to mention some of Thalia's singular citizens. As ever, McMurtry's dialogue and narration snaps and surprises. He makes his hero's solitude, and his increasing depression, infinitely intriguing. Will Duane's attempts to literally and figuratively cultivate his garden succeed? Will he forge his way through the three volumes of Proust that his attractive new psychiatrist has prescribed in lieu of Prozac? Will the catfish that has found its way into his waterbed survive? Answers to these and many other questions await you in Duane's Depressed, the final book of the marvelous trilogy McMurtry began with The Last Picture Show and Texasville. Let us pray that it turns into a quartet: we need far more of Duane and his family. For a start, his granddaughter Barbi--"a dark midge of a child"--merits a volume of her own. --Kerry Fried

Book Description

Funny, sad, full of wonderful characters and the word-perfect dialogue of which he is the master, McMurtry brings the Thalia saga to an end with Duane confronting depression in the midst of plenty. Surrounded by his children, who all seem to be going through life crises involving sex, drugs, and violence; his wife, Karla, who is wrestling with her own demons; and friends like Sonny, who seem to be dying, Duane can't seem to make sense of his life anymore. He gradually makes his way through a protracted end-of-life crisis of which he is finally cured by reading Proust's Remembrance of Things Past, a combination of penance and prescription from Dr. Carmichael that somehow works.

Duane's Depressed is the work of a powerful, mature artist, with a deep understanding of the human condition, a profound ability to write about small-town life, and perhaps the surest touch of any American novelist for the tangled feelings that bind and separate men and women.

5 out of 5 stars Please read this book!! .......2006-04-14

This book hit me straight in the heart. I got so wrapped up in this book, that I couldn't put it down. I did not read the first two of the trilogy, I wasn't aware that is was a trilogy when I bought it. It is not that important. The way that Duane was depicted in this book was amazing. I felt as if I really identified with him. I recommend it to anyone whose heart is searching.

4 out of 5 stars Reflections on Duane's Depressed by Larry McMurtry .......2005-09-28

This book is a sequel to Texasville which is a sequel to The Last Picture Show. I have read both of the latter books and have seen the movies for each one. One should probably see the two movies before reading the third book in the series. Some characters are the same in all the books and McMurtry mentions other characters in the earlier books that have gone on to other lives and deaths in this latest novel.

I related to this latest one in the series because it is written from Duane's point of view and he is exactly my age for the period of the book. While I am not exactly from the part of Texas where the book is set, I have been through there many times and know the area. Whereas I thought, from the opening lines of the book, that it might somehow deal directly with the issues of sustainability and more simple living, I did not find any of the catch phrases of this movement in the book. There is however, much indirect evidence that McMurtry was thinking along these lines as Duane parked his pickup, hid the keys and started to walk everywhere from then on. Duane's shrink convinced him to get a bicycle, but he was never in a motorized vehicle during this entire book. Seeing the countryside as a pedestrian or a bicyclist brought out the environmentalist in Duane. Reading this book gives one a clue to the challenges that one would have in promoting Sustainability and Simplicity in that part of the world. Issues of family and extended family are dramatized, and while the children and grandchildren are treated in a positive way at the end, in the beginning of the book, the opposite is true.

The book deals with Duane's retirement and his mixed feelings about what he has accomplished in 62 years. I certainly identify with this dilemma. I believe that McMurtry developed some heart problems around the time of his publishing this book and subsequently had successful bypass surgery. In this story, he ironically, perhaps wishfully endows Duane with low blood pressure, low cholesterol and low PSA scores. In a subsequent non-fiction book, Walter Benjamin at the Dairy Queen, McMurtry discusses this brush with mortality. He also gives a history of his family in this part of Texas and his growing up in Archer City where he has built a library to house his huge book collection, many of which he discusses in Walter Benjamin at the Dairy Queen. If one is looking for a bibliography of books that one "should" read, this is it, in my opinion.

What I like about McMurtry's characters is that most are not criminals, sociopaths and dysfunctionals. Most are just trying to get along in life. True he does cover the colorful characters of the west such a Billy the Kid and Calamity Jane, among others. He uses dialogue very skillfully to tell the stories, especially in the earlier parts of a book. In a couple of books, he seems to have grown weary and resorts to a straight narrative in the latter portions in order to fill in gaps and describe what happens to certain characters.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent novel.......2005-09-19

This is the third volume in the trilogy which includes THE LAST PICTURE SHOW and TEXASVILLE.

Set in Thalia, Texas, once again, Duane Moore, now 62, is beginning to feel his age and mileage. He's tired of the rat race that seems to permeate his life, so he leaves his wife and home and takes up residence in a nearby cabin. He gives up driving and walks (then bicycles) everywhere, sometimes over great distances. He builds a huge garden in which he grows just about every foodstuff imaginable, cares for it religiously 10 hours a day, and gives all the food away to the poor who come for it. He begins going to a psychiatrist in Wichita Falls who tells him to read all of Proust, which he struggles through. (Proust is McMurtry's favorite writer.) Finally, he flies off alone to Egypt.

This novel is a major achievement for McMurtry, a big step up from TEXASVILLE in the trilogy. He is much more focused on his characters, and his insights are more penetrating. Some of the things he has Duane do in his search for redemption and meaning in life are outlandish (as only McMurtry could be), but he pulls them off convincingly (even when we begin to doubt the believability of things). Top-drawer McMurtry and a pleasure to read.

4 out of 5 stars Stick With It.......2005-05-19

One of my favorite books that I read in my teens was "The Last Picture Show" by Larry McMurtry. (It was a pretty good movie as well). It really turned me on to this then-promising young author. When the sequel, "Texasville", came out years later, I read that as well. It turned out to be one of the worst books I have read. McMurtry's style of writing changed after his heart attack and his writing really suffered since shortly after "Lonesome Dove" came out. Still, I found myself continuing to read most every book of his that came out and wanting to be there when the old McMurtry showed up again.

After my experience with "Texasville", I bought, but was reluctant to read, "Duane's Depressed; the sequel to "Texasville". As I started out with the book I thought to myself, "This is what's wrong with the post-angina McMurtry". The problem is the excessive abundance of boringly idiotic characters. They're like an influx simplistic and Americanized people out of a Fellini movie. What made me almost put the book down and quit it is the multitude of Duane's children and grandchildren who are nothing but out of control spoiled brats. If this was the only book that I encountered these type of characters, I wouldn't mind. However, they overflow in all of the modern McMurtry.

As I struggled through a cast of totally disinteresting characters, I reached a point (at about a fourth of the way into the book) where the book really started to take off. We lose the dysfunctional offspring and start focussing on Duane Moore. His is a character well-developed by an author that was showing he's still got it. I found myself drawn into Duane and his life and challenges. I found myself relating to a man who was facing many things similar to what I was dealing with in my life. For the duration of the book, I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. It was a truly endearing study of a man bewildered by his past, present and future. As Duane was struggling with his issues, I found myself wondering if McMurtry was being autobiographical. I know next to nothing about his private life. It wasn't until his 14th or 15th book that a picture of him was shown on any dust jacket and that's the same picture that has appeared on every book since. Maybe it's an analogy of how his life changed after his heart attack. Whatever it was, the character of Duane takes me back to the early talent of Larry McMurtry.

This is a very good book that just happens to start out poorly. It isn't up there with "The Last Picture Show", "Lonesome Dove", "Leaving Cheyenne", or "Horseman Pass By". However, it IS in the category of "Moving On", "All My Friends are Going to be Strangers", "Terms of Endearment" and several others. When McMurtry's good he is VERY good but when he is bad...

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes To Confront It, One Has To Get Away From It All .......2004-12-23

Duane's Depressed, the third book in the Thalia, Texas-based series that also includes The Last Picture Show and Texasville, is the story of Duane Moore who is a self-made business man working the oil fields of Northern Texas. He is a mild-mannered, aging and ordinary man whose walk to his cabin becomes a metaphor for his itch for a new life. The narrative begins with Duane surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren, as well as the trappings of a typical rural life in that part of the country and ends with a world turned upside down and without any remnants of his past. Is Duane depressed or going through a phase considered normal for a sixty-two year old? Why won't he sleep in his own house any longer and could his abandonment of his truck, in favour of walking, be proof enough that he has a few marbles loose now?
As Duane progresses through a profound transition much happens that might not have made sense once, but makes for perfect congruity with the new man. The family is gone, the business is in one son's hands, the dog is gone and the lesbian psychiatrist is not likely to be kissed anytime soon. What would any man do? What would any sane man do? Fly away?
Read Duane's Depressed - a book which reads comfortably without the prerequisite of its prequels - and find out.

            1 out of 5 stars you're insane to say the least.......2004-02-24

            If you think that this author, Mindy L. Klasky, is 1st next to tolkien you're insane. Because these books do not have an ounce of goodness that Tolkien has, and these books shouldn't even be placed in the fantasy section. I thought it looked like a nice fantasy novel, but wow was I sure wrong, what were any of you or me thinking when you checked out this book. BAh.

            2 out of 5 stars Didn't like Hal.......2003-05-28

            What's wrong with King Hal? He's supposed to be a good guy, and the main love interest - but he acts like a complete jerk, is a hopeless negotiator to the detriment of his country, is mean to Rani, and one night, sleeps with a someone else(a virgin whom he gets pregnant), intends to marry another princess, but instead ends up marrying up the woman he impregnated, who is a mean, manipulative, cruel person. Yeah right, Hal's an admirable love interest for Rani. He's stupid in his relationships, rude to Rani, impregnates and marries an evil woman, and all along, Rani's heart bleeds/is infuriated by him. I won't be reading any of Klasky's books. I like good guys that I can actually like.

            4 out of 5 stars The Glasswrights' Journeyman.......2003-03-12

            I really liked this series i find them very entertaning.
            The only problem was that i found them boring at the start of the books. They're all very well writen and the language was very discripteve. Klasky is one of the best fantasy wrirters of our time the next Tolkien. In the latest part of the Glasswright series the city of Morenia is set aflame. The only place that king hal can turn to for relief is Liantine and the only way he can get relief from them is marrage to its princess a very homely girl with crossed eyes and rabbit teeth all of this makes for a good adventure.Where does Rani come in? she is asked by hal to acompany him to the nagotiation for the dowry. The question is, will Rani be able to?

            3 out of 5 stars Incredible ending...but not in a good way.......2002-12-11

            I've enjoyed all the books in this series. However, the ending in this one left me mystified. I wont spoil it for you but based on the rationale Hal & Rani both laid out for their actions the resolution of the book (abruptly wrapped-up in the last four pages!) was incredible...and not it a good way.

            Other reviewers commented on the lack of romance between Hal & Rani. I disagree. It was clearly there; it was just never declared.

            I'll probably read the next book when it comes out just to see if the series is redeemable.

            1 out of 5 stars THIS IS AWFUL!.......2002-09-03

            The first book was great, the sequel was pretty good, and this book is TERRIBLE. It has to be the worst book I have ever tried to read. I didn't get past page 10. Don't waste your money!

              Book Description

              Permaculture is a verbal marriage of “permanent” and “agriculture.” Australian Bill Mollison pioneered its development. Key features include:
            • use of compatible perennials;

            • non-invasive planting techniques;

            • emphasis on biodiversity;

            • specifically adaptable to local climate, landscape, and soil conditions;

            • highly productive output of edibles.
              Now, picture your backyard as one incredibly lush garden, filled with edible flowers, bursting with fruit and berries, and carpeted with scented herbs and tangy salad greens. The visual impact is of Monet's palette, a wash of color, texture, and hue. But this is no still life. The flowers nurture endangered pollinators. Bright-featured songbirds feed on abundant berries and gather twigs for their nests.
              The plants themselves are grouped in natural communities, where each species plays a role in building soil, deterring pests, storing nutrients, and luring beneficial insects. And finally, you--good ol' homo sapiens--are an integral part of the scene. Your garden tools are resting against a nearby tree, and have a slight patina of rust, because this garden requires so little maintenance. You recline into a hammock to admire your work. You have created a garden paradise.
              This is no dream, but rather an ecological garden, which takes the principles of permaculture and applies them on a home-scale. There is nothing technical, intrusive, secretive, or expensive about this form of gardening. All that is required is some botanical knowledge (which is in this book) and a mindset that defines a backyard paradise as something other than a carpet of grass fed by MiracleGro.

              5 out of 5 stars Inspiration and the tools to go with it.......2007-09-14

              I have totally enjoyed this book. The principles are a little murky because apparently this is a pretty new field and not very well developed for the eastern seabord which I live but it does provide enough guidance to begin setting up your own permaculture areas and start developing areas to be more ecologically sound food producing and living environments. I would HIGHLY recommend it as a first book on permaculture and the resources section alone has been a joy.

              5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-08-23

              I highly recommend this book.
              It is a fun place to start, if you wish to create a sustainable garden. All the basics are covered, from grey water, to ponds, to guilds, to forest gardens, and it is enjoyable and easy reading.

              5 out of 5 stars Well documented, practical and enticing.......2007-07-24

              I bought this book together with Patrick Whitefield's "Permaculture in a Nutshell" and read the latter first, which is a mere introduction compared to Toby Hemenway's "Gaia's Garden". Toby transmits his love for and knowledge of permaculture very well. I am trained as an agricultural engineer and did learn a lot while reading. He first teaches the basics and then rehearses them in the different chapters. The concepts sort of grow and develop while reading, which leaves you with the feeling that you don't have to open the book again to start designing your own garden. Toby's enthusiasm is also tangible and infectious.
              The only thing that's missing for me is more examples and better documentation about existing permaculture gardens/farms. My design would be quite different from Toby's (I live in Spain and we have our own favourite mediterranean crops) but the book provides the tools needed to do it your own way and Toby comes over as an open minded teacher.

              5 out of 5 stars So good it got stolen........2007-07-22

              Sad but true. As a former library worker, I can tell you there is no better praise than when a book gets ripped off.
              It is annoying mine was lifted from me but it happened and I am sad; it's a good one.
              Thanks for writing it.

              5 out of 5 stars Gaia's Garden is a practical guide for transforming yard to Eden.......2007-05-12

              This book is a fascinating read, very informative, and approachable for anyone trying out sustainable living, whether experimenting for the first time or with some experience. The author is inspiring and maintains a level of hopefulness not always found in environmental literature. He balances idealism with practicality and treasures the process of growing one's own food and flowers, recognizing that this is a lifelong journey and the gardener is always learning in a dynamic process. I find myself reading a chapter or so and being drawn out into my own yard to putter around with a new idea, then rocking on my front porch while I devour another chapter. This book is life-giving on several levels!

                  Book Description

                  The response to Jan Lindenberger's first book on the memorabilia of the 50s & 60s has been overwhelming. For those who wished to see more we present this wonderful volume, now newly revised and expanded with current pricing information. As odd as it may seem, the cold war had a strong influence in our kitchens; the companies that were major defense contractors also made kitchen appliances. They took that button that everyone feared and put it into kitchen appliances as push buttons. They proclaimed that these appliances were complex, competent, powerful, and would release you from household drudgery. A new style of life and work was developing and manufacturers wanted to "lighten our load" with the "household conveniences." The 50s and 60s are back in vogue. Their fun, warm, daring motifs make them a favorite of today's decorators. Antique shops are beginning to display more and more of the items of this era. The 50s & 60s Kitchen: A Handbook & Price Guide will help expand your knowledge of the era. Its color photographs of nearly 400 items will assist you in identifying your collectibles and will be invaluable in pricing them.

                  I simply don't see the point of creating a book such as this one. I've purchased many research/reference books, and have a particular love for all things 50s/60s, but the selection of items shown, and the almost total lack of editorial and research information, left me extremely disappointed. I don't know what the criteria was for choosing the items to feature, but I don't find them to be representative of the era, or even the best or most classic examples. The 50s and 60s were FUN! This author didn't bring any of that fun to her book.

                  I bought this book to increase my imagination and creativity. It is a little more than a "coffee table" book, with 69 pages of turning instuctions,and 89 pages of incredible works by different artists (Bud Latven, William Schmidt, Hugh McKay, and many more). To me, this inspiring book has sparked my interest in the lathe again.

                      Book Description

                      This is the first literary biography of Nobel Prize-winning poet and dramatist Derek Walcott. It traces the creative contradictions in his life from colonial St Lucia, where he was part of a tiny English-speaking Protestant mulatto elite in an overwhelmingly French-creole Roman Catholic black society, to 1999 when, a star of international literature and a symbol of cultural decolonization, he wanted to be Poet Laureate of England. The author has had access to letters, diaries, uncollected and unpublished writings, and conducted numerous interviews in the Caribbean, North America and Europe. Walcott is seen as someone driven by the need to justify his life and fulfil his talents before an unknowable God, but who, in mastering the ways of the world often regards himself as an example of fallen humanity. Besides offering an approach to Walcott as a poet, dramatist, theatre director, arts critic, and teacher, the book shows how his desire to be a painter influenced his vision and the way he works.

                      5 out of 5 stars From the provinces to Stockholm-a professional career.......2000-12-26

                      In this exhaustive and thorough 714page biography, Bruce King sets out the development of Derek Walcott as a poet and dramatist whose ambition and talent led him from the colonial backwaters of the Caribbean of the forties to the Nobel stage in Stockholm in 1992. The reader will not find a gossipy, tell-all chronicle.King follows Walcott from his earliest years as a child prodigy in Saint Lucia through university in Jamaica,life in Trinidad where he formed his Trinidad Theatre Workshop and on to his jet setting years as an international writer whose personal friends were Joseph Brodsky, Seamus Heaney, Les Murray, Susan Sontag, Robert Lowell, Paul Simon et al.Through his close detailing of Walcott's relative poverty, his incessant travelling to read his work, his disappointments, his successes,his sheer prolific output of writing and art, King fulfills his goal to demonstrate the effects on a major literary talent of cultural decolonialisation, the recognition of national literatures, the place of the U.S.in encouraging artists like Walcott.Walcott's is a very modern life,an example of the changing face of the once imperial-international literary and artistic scene.Walcott's work, as seen in his most recentTieopolo's Hound (an integration of poetry and art), continues to defy literature boundaries.King's biography will further understanding of the writer, his work, the culture from which he comes, and the larger movements in 20th century arts and letters.A must for general libraries, literary collections, and for readers and students of modern literature. A recommended companion volume is also King's earlier "Derek Walcott and West Indian Drama"(Oxford,1995).
