1 out of 5 stars The Reader is Betrayed.......2004-01-06

The actual plot of this book is not the problem. The way the characters are handled in the plot is. The editor of these books should be ashamed at the abysmal job he's done. There is no similarity between the three returning characters and their prior appearances.

In this tale we have Lidda the halfling thief return, she is changed for the better and has lost her mouth and her modern hip-hop slang from The Savage Caves. Krusk the half-orc barbarian returns in his 3rd, yes his third, incarnation. In City of Fire he was a good, loyal, team-player. In The Bloody Eye he changed as his IQ jumped, he got well spoken and even seemed to be able to read, directly contradicting his iconic statistics as well as becoming a leader. In this book there is no goodness left to Krusk, he seems to have a new backstory, no mention of his time in the forces of the Protector of the Obsidian Throne, his infatuated tavern wench Yddith from The Bloody Eye is mysteriously gone and not mentioned. He is now a cold-blooded killer, no doubts about it and probably well in the evil alignment. Mialee the elven wizard has lost her familiar, her bad eyesight and her bard lover. The new character, Vadania the druid, may as well not be there she is so superfluous.

Malthooz, the half-orc outsider from Krusk's home village(until Krusk changes again next story) was the most interesting of the lot, though his potential of becoming a cleric of Pelor is not pursued.

The triple-cross plot of the book, Thieve's Guild playing off our "heroes" against their wizard customer and the city watch is ok, but the execution is very poor. The collateral damage the characters cause without a twinge of regret is abominable. These incarnations of the adventurers cannot be considered "good" in any sense of the word. Innocent warehouse workers employed as a front are slaughtered by Krusk and Lidda, Mialee fireballs a dock to kill her pursuers resulting in a conflagration that is going to kill many and cost more their livelihood. They look back and say "We did what we had to do."

For the editor of the 10 books to allow such different portrayals of the characters, not to mention backgrounds, shows a complete and utter disdain for the discernment of the reader. Shameful and unforgiveable.

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-07-23

Having read a number of T.H. Lain's Dungeons & Dragons novels back-to-back in recent weeks, I've come to the conclusion this is a pseudonym for several writers working on the same series. This is very apparent in Treachery's Wake.

Whoever wrote Treachery's Wake clearly does not have the same grasp of the iconic characters as the "other" T.H. Lains demonstrated in The Living Dead and The Savage Caves, to name two. Gone is rogue thief Lidda's charming, smart-[aleck] banter. Gone are the quirks that made Elf wizard Mialee so appealing in The Living Dead, such as her allergy to alcohol, her raven alter ego and her bad eyesight (all completely forgetten and even contradicted in this book). The other characters are similarly miswritten.

But what I did not like most about this book is it reads more like a blood-thirsty action-adventure novel in the Executioner vein than a Dungeons and Dragons story. The book makes no bones about it: these adventurers are cold-blooded killers. They take life - monster and human - with nary a second thought. Mialee, in particular, reads more like a female Mac Bolan than a cultured Elf wizard who is hesitant to kill (as she is portrayed in other D&D series novels). Lidda spares a momentary thought for a number of innocent bystanders she kills at one point, but that's the extent of it.

Most unappealing is Orc barbarian Krusk, whose whole purpose in the book seems to be to act grumpy and kill people in the goriest manner possible.

The story's villain (who I won't reveal in order to preserve what little surprise this novel provides the reader) starts out interesting, but soon become nothing more than a one-dimensional character who -- once again -- resembles someone from the Executioner books more than D&D.

Maybe the person who used the Lain's name also writes for the Executioner series, because I saw so many similarities it's not even funny. With Mac Bolan, at least, such cold-bloodedness is expected, but in D&D while adventurers do have to kill 9/10 in order to complete a quest, they do so heroically. There is nothing heroic or even D&D-like about the way the iconic characters handle themselves in this novel.

If I had read this book first, before any others in the D&D series, I would have been turned off the whole series. As it is, I look upon Treachery's Wake as some sort of non-canon nightmare dreamt by Lidda or Mialee. If you haven't read a T.H. Lain Dungeons & Dragons novel before, this is NOT the book to start out with; even if you're reading them in order, it might not hurt to skip this one and come back to it only if some future D&D novel refers to the events in this story (as some of the books do have cross-continuity between them).

With any luck, time will show that this was an exception in an otherwise entertaining series of books.

3 out of 5 stars One of the weaker of Lain's D&D books..........2003-07-09

One of the weaker episodes in Lain's series so far, I'm a little hard pressed, however, to say why, exactly.

Lidda the halfling rogue, Mialee the elven wizardess, Vadania the elven druidess, Krusk the half-orc barbarian and a non-iconic half-orc character star in this tale, which involves the hiring of the group by a local thieves guild to rescue a powerful artifact. Alas, it's wisecracking Lidda who is behind this quest - she wants 'in' to the thieves guild, and as such, she takes centre stage in a lot of the actual plot of the story. But she's a little blind. This is after all, a thieves guild, and yet she doesn't seem to even consider a double-cross.

Most of the action takes place in a city, which is a change from the 'dungeon delve' aspect of most of Lain's works so far.

I think that's why I'm down on this one - it wasn't... big enough. Or, when it tried to be, it just sort of frustrated. Lidda wants to be in the guild so badly that she basically blinds herself to potential troubles, and Krusk is a stubbourn fool, to the point of stupidity. Only Mialee and Vadania stay true to their characters so far. Still, Lidda is a wisecrackin' fool, and she's always fun to read, even if she was chronically short-sighted in this book (no pun intended).

5 out of 5 stars Why doesn't anyone make more movies of these tales? [Lucas?].......2000-12-19

Darker than the other novelettes, and more uniquely Howard. Plenty of action, the people of the black circle is the best story. Sword swinging and hackles raising on his neck Conan hews through sorcery! An entertaining read, ignore the other bad reviews; this book will keep you occupied for hours with prose that spark the imagination like no others. George Lucas should try his hand at a film rendition of Conan before he dies.

3 out of 5 stars 3 Great Adventures, One Fair Pastiche.......2000-02-08

This is the first volume of the collected 'Conan the Barbarian' stories originally published by Lancer Books in 1966, which was to have been 4th chronologically to Conan's 'life' (However the number '2' appears on the spine!) The original paperback edition had cover art by Frank Frazetta. The book contains 4 stories:

People of the Black Circle (REH)

      The Slithering Shadow (REH)

The Drums of Tombalku (DeCamp, REH)

The Pool of the Black One (REH)

Robert Ervin Howard (1906-1936) created the premiere sword-and-sorcery character Conan the barbarian for the pulp magazine "Weird Tales" in the early 1930's. L. Sprague De Camp, an academic and literary fantasist, edited the stories for re-publication in the 1960's. He also obtained outlines for never-completed Conan tales from Howard's literary agent, Glenn Lord, and used them to produce pastiches in the Howard manner. "The Drums of Tombalku" is one of these stories; although REH is listed as co-author the story is really assembled from such adventures as "Jewels of Gwahlur" and "The Slithering Shadow". Oddly Conan plays an incidental role; it is Almuric the Aquilonian adventurer who discovers the lost, decaying city of a dying race who are preyed upon by a supernatural monster, and rescues the damsel in distress. Conan is tacked on at the end in a bit of mercenary intrigue that appears to be included only to give him a role in the story - as a fairy Godfather?

Of the real Howard stories, "People of the Black Circle" is the best, a neat mixture of sorcery, intrigue and action. "The Slithering Shadow" is a formulaic lost-city- decayed-race- monster-threatens-the-ingenue story, and "Pool of the Black One" is only a minor variation on the theme.

An L. Sprague de Camp collection contains the Drums of Tombalku, The People of the Black Circle, The Slithering Shadow and the Pool of the Black One:

Conan the Adventurer : The Drums of Tombalku - Robert E. Howard
Conan the Adventurer : The People of the Black Circle - Robert E. Howard
Conan the Adventurer : The Slithering Shadow - Robert E. Howard
Conan the Adventurer : The Pool of the Black One - Robert E. Howard

A story that was completed by de Camp.

Conan has been captured after the destruction of a mercenary band he was fighting in, but a friend escapes. The friend rescues a girl, and takes her back to her home city, but leaves when the horror in the Red Tower awakes, and he has to combat it.

Riding into the desert he meets Conan, who has apparently impressed his captors enough, the riders of Tombalku, that he now rides with them.

They all go to Tombalku, and Conan and Amalric briefly instruct the military there, before they fall foul of racism and a wizard, and decide to leave, post haste.

Conan is again in a leadership position, and seven of his lieutenants have been captured and are under sentence of death. He goes to see what he can do about it. In a flash, he makes off with their leader, the Devi. She is not all he has to worry about, as spies, plots and the wizardry of the Black Seers will all hinder him, not to mention the odd small army, along with the Devi herself.

            4.5 out of 5

Conan and the woman with him find a strange city in the desert, after attacks and problems, they finally come across two weird inhabitants, a man and a woman :

"..I am Thalis the Stygian," she replied. "Are you mad, to come here?"

"I've been thinking I must be," he growled. "By Crom, if I am sane, I'm out of place here, because these people are all maniacs."

The strange, deadly black shadows don't care who they take, though, and Conan and Natala must face those, and weird dream warriors, before the end.

Conan has escaped an island where he was in trouble, and swum out to a nearby ship, boosting himself over the side and inviting himself onto the crew.

He plots to take over leadership, but when he follows the pirate leader ashore later, he gets more than he bargained for with a lot of black followers and something nasty in the Pool.

He rallies and rescues what is left of the pirate crew, and has himself a ship, and a woman.

                      1 out of 5 stars Don't understand the hype.......2007-08-21

I am completely perplexed by the multitude of 5-star reviews for this cookbook. 35 of 37 reviews gave 5 stars, the other 2 reviews 4 stars at the time of writing this. Not a single other person out there was even remotely dissatisfied? Something seems wrong...

I'm not Vietnamese but I live near Little Saigon and eat there quite often so I think I have a pretty good grasp of the cuisine and how everything should taste. It's my favorite cuisine, and I have even learned to cook some of the dishes from friends, etc. I bought this book because I wanted to expand my repetoire, however, everything I have tried has come out tasting 'off'.

I found the directions in the recipes to be either misleading or not descriptive enough. Take the bu'n rie^u recipe, for example. The ingredients call for a large onion, pealed. In the directions, she just instructs you to saute the onion in a small skillet. Obviously you are not expected to saute a whole onion, however there is no mention as to whether you should quarter it, dice it, chop or mince it, etc. as you would expect in any other cookbook. Not to mention a large onion + shallots + crab won't even fit in a small skillet. That may sound picky but for a cuisine that is still considered somewhat exotic and unfamiliar to most Americans I think these kind of details are very important if the food is going to come out right.

The good aspects of this book are the descriptions of the culture, cuisine, and history of Little Saigon and it's people, which is really quite interesting. I just wouldn't recommend using this book to try cooking the food. I would suggest maybe trying the more detailed (albeit more difficult) "Into the Vietnamese Kitchen" cookbook for that.

                      In short, to^i kho^ng thi'ch sa'ch na`y.

I am an Indian who is married to a Vietnamese. I have always loved cooking and never have been afraid to try something different. I am always searching for authentic Vietnamese cookbooks in English and I have to say that this one is going to be my favorite. I thank Ms. Le for writing this book in such a detail and for her recipes.

I like to try my hand at cooking foods I enjoy eating in restaurants and Vietnamese happens to be one of my favorites. I borrowed this book from the library and cooked several dishes, all which came out absolutely delicious. I liked it so much that after I returned the book to the library, I bought my own copy on amazon. It looks like I'll be able to recreate my favorite rice vermicelli, spring rolls, and pho dishes at home on a regular basis. For anyone who wants to try their hand at cooking Vietnamese dishes at home this one's a definite keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Armenian man with a vietnamese food fetish .......2007-03-03

I've always had a thing for vietnamese food. I love everything about it, only problem is, I've just never been able to cook any of it. Born into an Armenian kitchen, the flavors, spices, and methods of cooking I've learned do me no good. I had resigned myself to eating out for vietnamese the rest of my life.

Then I saw an article in the March issue of Sunset magazine. A girl with dimples promising to teach me how to make vietnamese food. On a rare impulse, I bought The Little Saigon Cookbook (I think it hit a chord of sentimentality since I live in LIttle Armenia). The recipes are simple, fast, and delicious! I've now been able to make new friends and influence people using my new found cullinary skills. Thank you Ann Le!

I highly recommend this book, I had dogs previously to purchasing it, but I still learned a lot about dog behaviour and training tips. I would love a training session with the author she is highly knowlegable and it is clear she has a genuine love of dogs.

We have a Jack Russell Terrier - Stan. This book introduced me to a completely "new" way of thinking around how to best train Stan. The positive approach has been SO MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE! I highly recommend this book to anyone with a dog, even if there are no significant behavior problems.

Pat Miller writes in a friendly, easy-to-read style while still conveying the best of information. If you're new to Positive Reinforcement training, Miller's book explains the most important stuff, but the majority of the book is a step-by-step obedience plan for your pet. Well done!

The model railroad empire of MTH Electric Trains continues to steam ahead and revolutionize the O gauge electric train market with its innovative product lines, helping to make O gauge the fastest growing segment in model railroading. This is the first operator's handbook devoted to MTH's unique features and characteristics, including the new MTH Digital Control System.

Model railroaders can easily construct a complete MTH railroad with the detailed step-by-step instructions in this full-color reference. Thorough coverage of MTH operating systems and related components helps enthusiasts choose the right layout.

Includes an overview of the MTH Premier line and RailKing locomotives, rolling stock, and accessories plus a review of the RealTrax track system and the features and operations of ProtoSounds, Loco-Sound, and MTH conventional, infrared, and digital control systems. It also covers computer track planning software, layout construction, wiring and electrical components, scenery construction, equipment maintenance, and operations.

                                5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Step-by-step Resource!.......2002-12-03

Model Railroading with MTH by Rob Adelman is an outstanding resource for a beginner!
(Actually, this book contains quite a few tips for the experienced modeler too - the kind of tips that one usually learns through the school of hard knocks.)

If you are a Lionel fan, don't let the MTH in the title scare you away, the vast majority of what the author writes is very applicable to getting started with any brand of trains. The specific MTH product numbers and specific instructions on MTH's command system are just icing on the cake if you decide to go with MTH products.

The chapter titles tell the story:

                                * Planning Your Model Railroad (The author discusses pros and cons of space, size, location, themes, eras, etc.)

                                * Designing Track Plans Using RR-Track Layout Design Software (This software is considered by many to be the industry standard in computer software for track planning and the author explains the software in a way that even beginning computer users can enjoy.)

                                * Constructing A Table/Platform For Your Layout (The author provides step-by-step directions for a 4'X8' platform with clear text and pictures)

                                * Track Laying and Backdrop Construction (Boy, I wish I had the tips on "planning for engine overhang and tunnel portal clearance" and the "how-to" pics for applying a backdrop when I first started my layout.)

                                * Creating Realistic Scenery (The author shows how to use specific Woodland Scenics products. Many consider Woodland Scenics to be the industry standard for scenery products.)

                                * Train Control Using MTH Digital Control System. (This potentially difficult topic is explained clearly and with the number of pictures, drawings and how-to tips, you almost can't go wrong!)

                                * Detailing Your Layout (one of my favorite topics and very nicely done!)

                                * The Dispatcher Game (a multi-level "game" which shows one how to operate even a small pike in a "real" railroad fashion. this help prevent boredom from setting in after the layout is completed and the trains have run a couple of hundred laps around the layout)

I especially enjoyed the author's inclusion of dozens of color photographs of each step of his construction of this 4' X 8' layout. Between the photographs and the text, it would be hard to go wrong...

The author also included many sidebars (usually identified by yellow boxes) in which he supplies definitions of pertinent terms, safety tips to help avoid injury during construction/operation, construction hints for easier building, brand name products he used and even the specific part numbers of products he used. A beginner will find these sidebars to be an invaluable resource!

Lastly, the first couple of chapters deal with the history of MTH Electric Trains. For someone eager to get started on building their own layout, I suggest you just jump ahead to Chapter Three - Planning your layout and begin working. You can always go back, at some later date, to read all about the history of MTH if you'd like.

                                This is a great resource!

This is a great book for understanding the world of MTH trains. It is a perfect book for a father and son to enjoy building a MTH train layout for the first time. It also has helpful hints for those more experienced in the hobby.

The graphics and tables are a helpful addition as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great O-gauge Model Railroading Book.......2002-10-11

Model Railroading with MTH Electric Trains is by far the best book I have ever read on how to plan, construct, and operate an O gauge train layout. As I am just getting into model railroading, I can already clearly see that this book has all the resources I not only need to get going, but to keep progressing in the hobby. I was especially pleased with the chapter on the Digital Command System as the author explained it in an easy, straightforward way that really helped me to understand it much better. Getting started with DCS is a lot easier than I imagined. Not only that, but I also learned a lot about the many (over 200) different features that I had no idea it could perform. I'm really looking forward to trying those out. Another chapter I particularly like was the Dispatcher Game. I had never really given any thought to operating my trains with a purpose and this chapter outlines how to do so in a game-type situation. Plus, since it is based on how real railroads operate, I learned quite a bit. I am certainly looking forward to playing the Dispatcher Game once I am finished constructing my layout. The last chapter is also very good. I found the interview with Tony Lash as well as the pictures of his phenomenal layout to be excellent. Lastly, the book doesn't end with just the chapters--but also has quite a few appendices that contain a lot of useful information. Model Railroading with MTH Electric Trains is a definite must-have in my opinion and is extremely well done. I recommend anyone building or thinking of building a layout to get this book. Heck, even if you have a layout already, the Dispatcher Game chapter alone is worth the price of the book.

Being an interior designer, this book would be one of the best reference on my book shelves. The autour's knowleadge on fabric seems to be highly proffessional so that I believe this book could be an excellent textbook for schools. The book covers a well-summerized, but not superficial, history on each types of fabric from all over the world, and it further examines fabrics by catagories of different design subjects. Special terms on fabric design are well explained. The design of the book is pleasant, and many beautiful pictures are given which are helpful to understand the content. This is the kind of book I have been looking for, since I was an interior design student. (I studied in the U.S. so that I have seen so many other related books published there to compare !!!)

                                    Book Description

Look to the Lady examines the careers, talents, and styles of three women who were acknowledged, each in her time, as the greatest interpreter of Shakespeare's heroines: Sarah Siddons, Ellen Terry, and Judi Dench. In the eighteenth century, Siddons was celebrated for playing Shakespeare's tragic women in a heroic, even "sublime" style. Terry, who reigned over the late nineteenth-century stage, had a softer, "beautiful" style and is remembered best for her roles in Shakespeare's comedies. Dench, who still performs, has amassed a more varied résumé than either of her predecessors. Not only has Dench had the advantages of variety offered by film and television roles, says Russ McDonald, but she may also command a greater artistic range.

One of McDonald's interests is in the ways Shakespearean performance influences, and is influenced by, critical and popular appraisal of the works. He also discerns parallels and distinctions in the approaches of Siddons, Terry, and Dench to the vocation of acting—specifically to Lady Macbeth and other great Shakespearean roles. Look to the Lady also helps us to better understand the place and function of the theater in British national life and what constitutes "great acting" at various historical moments. Further, by examining across time the varied attitudes of actors, critics, and audiences toward Shakespearean texts and roles, McDonald offers insights into how external forces combine with the inherent appeal of the plays to keep them fresh and new centuries after they were first written and performed.

Throughout, McDonald blends learned commentary on the history and culture of the stage with entertaining details about the appearance, personality, genealogy, and private life of each actor. Including some rarely seen images and drawing on previously untapped reviews and anecdotes, this is a lively introduction to the burgeoning field of performance criticism.
