Book Description

Driving across the Arizona desert, Sally Jasper collides with a man who sprints suddenly out of the sand and across the highway. The man—an illegal Mexican immigrant—is killed upon impact. Haunted by a rising ghost of guilt, Sally vows to set things right again. She soon learns that the dead man was being chased, and the gang of vigilantes who were pursuing him are as dangerous as they are unpredictable. Sally realizes she has something in common with the dead stranger: a yearning for freedom.

This desire leads her to form an unlikely rock-n'-roll band which she uses as a front to conceal her perilous plan to smuggle a Mexican family across the border. But her task is complicated by her budding romance with an Immigration officer. . . .

The deeper she lets this man into her life, the closer he gets to the truth. Her days become a minefield, where one misstep will cost her everything she holds dear. And if that weren't enough, a group of so-called patriots is scouring the area for signs of unlawful aliens; their justice is cruel and swift. Sally and her friends come into direct contention with these armed bigots, and as their popularity as musicians grows, so does the enmity between them and the men who would expose their Mexican stowaways.

Fugitive Shoes is a story of three women's efforts to let go of the past, to find unexpected love, to mingle with dangerous people, and to thwart the law when the law seems wrong. Most of all it is a story of libertad: Freedom.

Once again, Erin has done it again! Very interesting read - good to the end. Thanks!!

4 out of 5 stars interesting border thriller .......2006-05-06

To save distribution costs, store owner Sally Jasper persuades her two married best friends Dawn Marie Johnson and Anne Obayashi to accompany her when she picks up a load of shoes in a Tucson warehouse. No one is there to meet her as promised until early the next morning. On the drive back across the desert to Fresh Waters, a man runs in front of their truck. Later the illegal immigrant dies in the hospital.

Sally concludes the Juan Doe was seeking freedom. She also learns from Immigration Officer Leigh Surry that some patriots seek out the desperate Mexicans to provide their own brand of justice. Needing to do something and now part of a band called Radio due to a foolish bet by Sally with their adopted teen Jazmyn and her two best friends, she decides to help families cross the border even if it means the vigilantes come after them.

FUGITIVE SHOES is an interesting thriller that takes a close look at border justice with the author making no apologies for defending the basic human rights of illegals trying to sneak into the country against adverse environmental conditions, hostile governments and lethal zealous patriots. The exciting story line seems implausible at times and the flashbacks to the female friends' youths feel disjointed. Still fans of strong caring women risking their lives to do what they feel is right will appreciate the three amigas and their "daughter" as they sing their way to fame and fortune while Sally assists those sneaking into the country.

RAISING THE DEAD

With midterms looming, the students at Sunnydale High are predictably stressed-out. Even super-student Willow is feeling the pressure to succeed. And when her usual study buddies -- Buffy, Xander, and Oz -- decide they don't need her tutorial sessions, Willow wonders if she's really what they don't need. But her hurt feelings don't explain her sudden antagonism toward Buffy -- or the strange dreams they've both been having.

As tensions in the school escalate into brutal acts of violence -- and the perpetrators turn up horribly mutilated -- Buffy and the gang search for a supernatural source. The evidence indicates that someone is attempting to resurrect a powerful Hindu demon. Willow's new con?dante, guidance counselor Promila Daruwalla, becomes the prime suspect...until Giles runs into an old "friend" who is always causing trouble. It will take all of the Slayer's resources...and the help of all her friends...to find the culprit and destroy the key to the demon's resurrection.

4 out of 5 stars People A La Mode.......2005-09-27

This is an older Buffy novel (by older, I mean circa 2000) that I somehow forgot to review. Coming back to it is something like getting a breath of fresh air. In retrospect Buffy's senior year was one of those simpler times. Whedon wasn't quite as determined to take everyone out of character. Most, but not all, of the personal issues were teenage angst sized. All this was soon to end, but sometimes you have to take the good times with the bad.

Although there isn't much good about what was happening to Sunnydale. First cattle start showing up eaten and the eaters turn out to be hell hounds. Then more cattle are munched, but this time there are no easy explanations. The people start going into rages and killing each other - with the survivor turning up as lunch on something's menu. Giles is stumped, Buffy is faced with a vampire insurgency, and Willow can find no help in either the internet or her spellbook. Did I mention Buffy and Willow? They also happen to be very, very mad at each other.

Of course, it's some kind of bad demon mojo, but how its happening and who is calling it up is the problem. You can't hit what you cannot find. Naturally this state of affairs can't last, but by the time Giles knows the culprit its almost too late. All of the Scooby gang are going to be up to their elbows in snarling beasties before the curtain even begins to close.

Ray Garton is more than a churner-outer of Buffy books. Even at the time of this writing he had some 37 books to his credit from Sabrina to serious horror. He has a solid, competent style that leaves out nothing necessary but is wary of waxing on endlessly. Not only did I enjoy the book, but I had a major nostalgia attack while reading it. Buffy, Buffy, where art thou?

2 out of 5 stars A Mediocre Buffy Adaptation.......2004-06-06

This novel from the superb TV series has Buffy and the Scoobies battling demons called rakshasas, taken from Hindu mythology, who can turn friends violently against each other and are trying to do the same to the Scooby Gang.

It's a good idea, but the exploration of it here isn't compelling. My main problem is exactly what the last reviewer complained of: Garton doesn't seem to have a real command of the show and its characters. The behavior and dialogue just aren't quite right. You could explain that as the effects of the rakshasa magic, but Garton lets slip a few times that he doesn't know enough about Sunnydale. Willow describes a new Sunnydale High guidance counselor created for this story, Ms Daruwalla, as the first real person hired by Sunnydale High since Rupert Giles - ignoring her close friendship with Jenny Calendar. At another point, Willow say she doesn't know anybody who's ever been transformed into an animal, ignoring the transformation of Buffy into a mouse and Xander into a jackal (or was it hyena?). And although the story takes place at a time when Faith is in town, she is never mentioned in the book.

Granted, these little mistakes are only going to upset obsessive Buffy fans like yours truly, but isn't that pretty much the target audience for these books? I really can't see many of them being sold to or read by people who haven't seen the series.

The plot does have some nice twists, and the sections where Buffy is playing detective, trying to track down the source and nature of the latest evil, are pretty good. But overall, I didn't think this one had enough bite.

2 out of 5 stars Garton needs to be more aware of his source material.......2003-07-08

This book is an example of one of my greatest pet peeves. I think it behooves any author of a media tie-in to be well-versed in the show, movie, etc that they are writing about. The story is interesting, and the writing isn't totally horrible (though if I came across one more adverb I was going to scream, he said frustratedly) but the characters and situations are just not what we have come to expect from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I give some leeway for this, because there just isn't anyone with the flair for dialogue that Joss Whedon and the Buffy writers have, but there is no excuse for being unaware of certain basics of the show or the monsters you've chosen to use.

First, there is a whole section at the beginning of the book about "hell-hounds". These are NOTHING like the hounds in the show. Given the release date of the book, it's possible that Garton never saw the hell-hounds in the Prom episode. Even at that, however, he describes creatures that are basically identical to werewolves and never explains how they are different. Also, Buffy goes after them with... get this... a silver-tipped stake. Does Garton not realize that Buffy uses weapons aside from stakes? Wouldn't a silver dagger or a silver-tipped crossbow bolt make more sense? Even a silver steak knife?

Then he introduces the raksasha. These are demons from Hindu mythology, and are pretty scary in their own right. But Garton describes them as tiny, while in the myths they are often taking the form of humans and tigers. Paintings show them as being the same size as people. Also, he has them getting into peoples dreams and causing them to murder friends and loved ones and then the rakshasa attack and eat the killer. In the myths they ate the dead body or bodies that were left after the attack. A minor point, but important. Basically, I think it would have been better to create an entirely fictitious monster than to risk offending people by getting their sacred stories wrong.

As for the characters, they are poorly done. Aside from certain over-used catch phrases and occasional glimmers of catchy dialogue, there was almost nothing in these characters that reminded me of the folks in the show. I have had people read lines to me that were cut from episode scripts (lines that I'd never heard in other words) and I have almost always been able to identify what character spoke them without being told. They all have very distinct "voices" which are very recognizable. None of this came across in the book. Also, many of the characters' actions were just... well... out of character. Especially Giles and Joyce.

All this aside, though, I enjoyed the book for the most part. But an interesting story does not make up for ignoring your source material when you are writing a tie-in novel.

But that's just me. I could be wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Superior Buffy book.......2003-06-15

I've been reading (sporadically) the Buffy paperbacks in the order of publication. I'm 2/3 through this one (the 9th) and it's by far the best yet. (Gatekeeper Trilogy would've been up there if it had been condensced into one volume.) Don't know if Ray Garton has penned more Buffys since but I'd stop the reading in order of publication date to read his. And I'll check out other non-Buff novels by Garton as well.
Oh, I'll revise my rating to 5 if the conclusion is on a par with the rest of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Buffy.......2002-03-18

One of the stronger entries in the book series, and the most adult. The characters are more believably drawn than usual, true to their T.V. personaes but with an added dimension not often found in the books.

This one reads almost like a murder mystery or detective novel, and has less slam-bang action than usual. Suspense is maintained, red herrings are offered, and the action is refreshingly economical (and more effective for it). The ending is satisfying, but has a slightly rushed quality to it.

My only regret about this author is that he hasn't penned more Buffy books. This is an auspicious debut. Resurrecting Ravana is a good entry to interest the newbies, and will certainly satisfy the fans.

        3 out of 5 stars I'm a shark - Grrrr!! No you're not, you're a dolphin!!!.......2002-04-24

'The Final Sanction' see the return of the vicious armoured shark-like aliens - the Selachians from a previous Lyons book 'The Murder Game'. The Doctor, Jamie and Zoe arrive during the end of the war between humans and Selachians. They are immediatly caught up with the fighting when Zoe is captured by the Selachians and taken back to their home planet, which is destined to be destroyed in the war. The Doctor must risk either saving Zoe and altering the history of Time or letting Time run its course.

Steve tries to convey the message that the Selachians aren't the violent creatures they make themselves out to be giving a detailed history of why they are like they are. But this feeling of pity is soon dropped as the Selachians shoot plasma rifles into the bellies of prisoners, rips their arms off, etc.

Characterisation of the Doctor and Jamie are pretty much spot on whereas Zoe tends to be a bit more 'gung-ho' as usual, which is a nice change as opposed to her usual cerebral damsel in distress mode.

The story is a gritty space-war story so dont expect much light-heartedness. Well worth a read!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Selachians return in a great book.......2000-10-27

In 'The Murder Game', Steve Lyons introduced a new alien race to the Doctor Who universe - the Selachians. These delicate, dolphin-like water-breathers wear powered armour decorated to make them look like sharks, and have a code of honour that prevents them from any substantial friendly interaction with other races.

'The Final Sanction' depicts a war between humanity and the Selachians, into which the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe stumble. Recognising the period they are in, the Doctor tries to take his companions away from this time but the TARDIS has vanished.

When Zoe is captured by the Selachians, the Doctor is faced with a dilemma: to save her, he must risk disrupting the true course of history. Will the Doctor risk disruption of the timestream or will he leave Zoe to a gruesome fate?

By taking a new look at this fascinating race, especially what their lives are like when not engaged in battle, and bringing into doubt one of the strongest tenets of the series, Mr. Lyons gives us a novel that is well worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars The Final Sanction: Final Destination?.......2000-07-21

This was an excellent book I bought for the sheer liking of the teaming of the 2nd Doctor, Jamie and Zoe. When I began reading, I found the book enthralling, and I couldn't really put it down. But, as I approached the middle, it dipped and I didn't find the plot could keep me reading for more than half an hour. Then, as I got to the last six or seven chapters, I picked it up again and it made me want to read more and more. Having not read "The Murder Game", I didn't know who the Selatians were, but by the end of the book, I certainly did find out! The book follows the typical Steve Lyons writing mould, including some interesting characters with good characterisations and a good characterisation of the Doctor and his companions. Read it for the sheer fun of it - read it if you're bored. Just read it!

        4 out of 5 stars A no-holds-barred look at war.......2000-04-13

THE FINAL SANCTION isn't a perfect novel--but it, like so many of Steve Lyons's other books, is a strong, gutsy look at a difficult subject.

Focusing on the tail end of a war between the human race and the aquatic Selachians, Lyons asks the question, "How far will mankind go to end a war?" With the Doctor, Jamie, and Zoe trapped in the middle of Earth's "solution" to the Selachian menace, we see firsthand just how desperate war can make people.

This is one of Lyons's more "violent" books, similar in intensity to KILLING GROUND and TIME OF YOUR LIFE. It has a strong plot, though, and an excellent (and rare) portrayal of Patrick Troughton's Doctor in print. This book isn't for the easily squeamish, and it's certainly not what one would ever call an upbeat book--but it's well worth reading.

1 out of 5 stars Boring, boring, boring.......2000-03-07

The problem is, I generally like Steve Lyons work. "The Witch Hunters" remains my all-time favorite PDA, and I also kind of liked "Salvation". But this one... I just found it boring, trite, and maddeningly cloy.

The book brings back the Selachians of Lyon's previous 2nd Doc PDA, "The Murder Game", and takes as its plot the final days of an Earth military campaign against them. This is used as a spring board for a story that is essentially an anti-war statement. Ok, fair enough, no problems there. But then it proceeds to truck out just about every anti-war cliche a century of far better writing has produced: the unbelievably incompetant commander, the helpless & peaceful civilians caught in the middle, the honorable soldier who just follows orders, the Big Weapon that people are afraid to use but will use anyway (even though it will kill billions of lives). I don't know, I've read it all before and I just couldn't stomach it one more time.

Lyons tries, but for the most part does not succeed, to make the Selachians nominally sympathetic, even though they are cast as pretty much the bad-guy race here. To me, this was probably the biggest problem with the book; by the end of it I not only felt very little sympathy for them, but in some ways thought they were getting exactly what they deserved -- the exact opposite of Lyon's intentions. So much for this morality play. As for the other bad guy, the incompetant commander of the Earth forces, I found his incompetance so far beyond the bounds of believability that I just couldn't take him seriously. Again, another strike against the book.

Lyon's 2nd Doctor is pretty much OK, not exciting but not too far from the mark. Companions Jamie and Zoe come off (uncharacteristically, for a Lyons novel!) as a little bland, especially Zoe; at one point I had the impression that this story had originally been conceived with Victoria in mind. This is a shame, as Jamie and Zoe are among my favorite companions, and I have yet to find a novel that has done either of them justice.

So, overall, skip this one unless you are a DW completist.

I first came across this book at the library. I was looking for a diet cookbook. I am so glad I found this cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow and are so delicious. I only made one recipe that I didn't like and that is because I don't like dill pickles. This cookbook has helped me get started on eating healthy and enjoying it. Wonderful vegetable and fruit combinations. Best cookbook I ever bought. I would recommend this cookbook even if you don't need to lose weight.

        Fantastic Cookbook!
My boyfriend and I started doing The Zone a week and a half ago, and this cookbook has become our Bible. He comes home from work EXCITED to see which recipe I've chosen for the night, even though we're dieting. Its ingredients are the perfect combination of accessible and unique; Rachel Ray meets The Iron Chef.
The recipes are easy but include enough "new" foods to keep this diet from getting boring. For people who like trying new foods but hate complicated cookbooks that include lots of expensive items (from which you only use 1tsp, each, of course) - this cookbook is for you! You should have Protein Powder and lots of avocados and/or nuts in your kitchen; other than that, no major purchases required.
The book is divided into chapters based on meals (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner) and Snacks. The Breakfast section includes smoothies with fresh & frozen fruit, omeletes with feta, vegetables, and seasonings, as well as hot cereal, yogurt, and cottage cheese variations. Lunches and Dinners are interesting takes on traditional, non-Zone sandwiches, salads, burgers, and soups. They include not only chicken and turkey, but also fish (mahi mahi, sea bass, tuna, scallops, AND shrimp), pork, beef, tofu, and tempeh.
While I wish each ingredient listed how much of each "Zone block" it contributed to the recipe, substitutions become fairly obvious as you begin to recognize the Zone block system. To facilitate substitutions, I recommend pairing this book with one of Dr. Barry Sears's books so that you have a firm grip on the diet itself. Each recipe in Ms. Walker's book is converted into Zone Blocks, but you'll need the other book(s) to explain what those blocks are and how many you should eat.

I almost forgot the most important thing - the food TASTES SOOOO GOOD! (And not diet-good; GOOD-good!)

        4 out of 5 stars Zone cookbook.......2006-03-11

We have tried four dinner recipes in this book so far, and all were good. I was surprised to see that many dinner recipes are only recipies on how to prepare veggies, and then the end of the recipe it says "Tip: this dish goes well with grilled chicken or beef" etc, so you are left on your own to figure out what meat to serve and how to prepare it.
However, this cookbook does have a great variety of recipies that don't just use the same old zone veggies.
The baked salmon on fennel and mustard dill sauce recipe was excellent (and soo easy) and left my 6 year old asking for a third helping!
Beautiful pictures of the finished meal, but I got a kick out of one salad that was pictured with bow tie pasta...which was not in the recipe and is a zone diet no-no!

5 out of 5 stars absolutely delicious meals.......2005-11-16

the meals in this book are so tasty and easy to make, i keep coming back for more every day. i found the variety of vegetables, both standard and unique, plus the variety of herbs and spices in almost every recipe, just knocks my socks off everytime i try a new recipe.

i looked into having zone meals delivered, but the cost was too prohibitive. i like to cook and figured i'd save money by buying a recipe book and doing the cooking myself.

i have not studied the zone diet and only casually know how it works (i've tried just about every other diet). i stuck to these recipes about 80% during the week and about 50% on the weekends. After 6 weeks, i lost 15lbs, my colesteral lowered from 200 to 160, and my grocery receipts added up to about 50% less than zone delivery service in my area.

i am a working mom and don't have a lot of time to cook. i found most of the recipes simple and easy to make, esp the breakfasts. some ingredients are unique, but if you're in a metropolitan area, they should be readily available. the uniqueness just adds to the amazing flavors. the only problem is that they discontinued the zone perfect protein powder with out a substitute. this cuts out most of the smoothie recipes and a couple others. i also don't do tofu, and a few of the lunches and dinners are tofu based, so i skip some recipes. However, i do make most of the recipes and i am always satisfied after every meal and don't feel extra hungry in between.

i think the biggest winner in the "diet wars" is the one that keeps people coming back with or without willpower. this book does that for me. these recipes make dieting and healthy eating a no-brainer and i keep going back for more. this book is a real winner!

3 out of 5 stars Great information, great sedative.......2007-05-06

This book is filled with lots of wonderful information for starting your first saltwater aquarium. However, it reads like a dictionary. It's simply need-to-know information without much rhythm. I found myself actually nodding off while trying to read this book at 5 p.m. More pictures would probably have helped keep my interest, but I can't say for sure. Otherwise, Saltwater Aquariums for Dummies had useful information that I was able to apply to my aquarium hobby.

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2007-04-08

This book makes saltwater aquariums seem easier than they actually are. For one, I don't even think the book mentions the use of reverse osmosis or deionized water, which is strongly recommended by all marine aquarists. The author also doesn't mention the importance of live rock. In fact, he goes as far to advise against using live rock for fish-only tanks! Sure, you might be able to get away with not using live rock, but it won't be worth it in the long run. Also, I don't agree with the list of recommended filter combinations. One more thing, the book lists an air stone as essential equipment, but the only thing an air stone will do is aid evaporation and cause salt creep! If you have enough movement of water at the surface, you should get sufficient gas exchange. There is, however, one thing the book does get right: its strong recommendation of using a protein skimmer.

This book is easy to understand, but you won't be getting the best information.

3 out of 5 stars Good Starter Book, But Incomplete.......2007-03-09

This new edition of Saltwater Aquariums for Dummies has been brought much more up-to-date with current marine aquarium techniques and is one of the most recently published books I could find on the subject. That said, it's still not a great book on the subject. It becomes overly repetitive in some areas and lacking in others and is often poorly organized. For instance, even basic species information is divided between multiple chapters with each one incomplete on its own and constantly referencing you back-and-forth. Too much time is spent on filtration techniques which the book itself deems are generally inadequate while leaving the reader confused between other techniques [and glances over or completely neglects advanced techniques used for reef aquariums]. The book is clearly aimed at the beginner, but fails to provide adequate direction for moving forward from there.

          5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-03-08

This is a great book for those who don't know how to keep a saltwater aqarium.

this book is actually quite helpful in getting you familiar with
all the essential jargon encountered in this hobby. it is done in
a non intimidating manner. as for those that criticize the book
for recommending undergravel filters, it doesn't, it states it can be
done, but its old technology. buy this book, WITH!,a comprehensive
salt water aquarium book. after reading both you are ready to play.
more in depth books gave too much info too fast. i took off star
because photos are in black and white.

I bought this book in the early 1980's, and back then ,this was considered a very up-to-date book. I loved it back then!

However, now that it's 2007, many of the photos in this book will seem out-dated ....to the reader.

I truly only glanced thru the book and read very little of it, because I purchased it as a gift for a friend who collects. However what I did see, it seems to me the pictures were skimpy and with glass ware being what it is, most folks need more pictures in detail as well as descriptions to purchase. PLEASE: Let me state this: AMAZON IS THE GREATEST PLACE I HAVE EVER FOUND FROM WHICH TO PURCHASE BOOKS.

1916. A biography of the playwright George Bernard Shaw. Most of Shaw's early plays were either banned by the censor or refused production. He began the practice of writing the challenging, mocking, eloquent prefaces to his plays, which were sometimes longer than the play itself. In 1925 he won the Nobel prize. Contents: A Preliminary View; The Man; The Evidence of the Plays; The Social Thinker; The Poet and Mystic; The Theater Craftsman; and Shaw's Place in Modern Drama.
