Good Girl Wants It Bad
ASIN: 0786715766 |
Book Description
Scott Bradfield's newest collection, Hot Animal Love, reads as if Raymond Carver penned Charlotte's Web — though for the kids this collection is surely not. Bradfield's witty, sardonic prose is brilliantly on display as the harsh emotional realities of contemporary life — exemplified by the basic instincts of love and hate — are played out across all facets of the animal kingdom. From a duck struggling to gain academic tenure and a penguin trying to drink himself to death, to personal ads for lonely canines, and the familiar antics of those poor, pitiful, humans themselves, Bradfield strips bare the very essence of human behavior and asks us to consider who the real beasts are — the results are both hilarious and profoundly moving.
Customer Reviews:
Plenty of variety in voice and theme.......2003-10-18
This collection of 17 tales of fantastic felines and their humans has plenty of variety in voice and theme, but not in feline gender. Why, or WHY, have only male felines as protagonists? Through all 17 stories? What an odd editorial decision (or weird coincidence, to give the editor the benefit of the doubt).
With that pet peeve of *this* cat-loving science fiction writer soundly petted (I've got six girls and only one guy-cat in my current menagerie), my highest compliments go to Elizabeth Ann Scarborough for "Born Again" and to Anne Braude for "The Quincunx Solution." In each of these very different tales, we have a cat who is simply that - a feline without any telepathic, telekinetic or other special powers - responding in kind to his human companion's love and devotion. Each tale has plenty of fantastic elements (this is a scifi/fantasy anthology, after all!), but its feline hero remains delightfully ordinary in the midst of extraordinary happenings. That's why these two stories pleased me most, because they capture so beautifully the bond between human and companion animal.
With one exception, the rest of the tales kept me reading and made me glad the editor saw fit to include them. The one that I stopped reading after a few pages had almost no dialog, with the writer spending most of her prose providing backstory - which indicates to me that this particular tale would have been better as a novella, at least (or maybe even as a novel). Its author clearly needed a great deal more space than the short story format provides in order to tell her story engagingly.

Love cats? Then grab a copy and find a sunbeam! ^_^.......2002-10-22
Nothing quite like curling up with a purring cat in your lap and an adventures cat in your book! ^_^
As with all compendiums there are some good, and some bad stories, but I feel that the good drasticaly outweight the bad. I've found this to be a well collected anthology series and would highly recommend it to anyone who is fond of cats!
Another catly assortment of 18 stories........2001-02-26
Belden, Wilanne Schneider: "The Last Answer" - Perielle is the precocious child in this one (look for one, generally a very interesting character, in almost every Belden story). The conspirators who are trying to seize power upon the disappearance of her father the king need her to be able to steal the Royal Relics; she herself has shown no signs of developing Royal Power, but the ability to use the magic of the relics isn't necessary for what the conspirators have in mind.
Braude, Anne: "The Quincunx Solution" - Quincunx lives with Margaret and her father (who, after inheriting a modest legacy, retired from his work as an apothecary to squander the family's money on alchemy). Sensible daughter/scatterwit father story.
Carr, Jayge: "Circus" - The felines here include both housecats and an alien masquerading as a lion in an interstellar circus. Cool.
Edghill, India: "Tybalt's Tale" - Here is the tale of the Prince of Cats (who have no king, since a cat speaks for himself).
Fontenay, Charles L. "Miss Hettie and Harlan" - Harlan's the cat; he can talk.
Gladney, Heather; Clayton, Don; Osborne, Alan Rice: "The Tale of the Virtual Cat" - Decades ago, when mice were still used, somebody thought it was funny to hook up their drivers in the new lattice software to data about *real* mice. Now Mice are a big problem for Virtual Reality operating theaters, so a surgeon suggests a tried-and-true method for exterminating mice. (In case anybody gets the notion that it's always easy to shut down a computer system and reboot, consider why the phone company is stuck with a lot of antiquated computers before posting negative reviews.)
Griffin, P.M.: "The Neighbor" - Finally, a followup to "Trouble" from _Catfantastic_, rather than one of the Bastet stories from 2, 3, and 5.
Hamilton, Jane: "Arrows" - The arrows in this case are elfshot; 2 mischievous jinn have accidentally messed up a stray cat's life, and are trying to undo the damage.
Horwood, Sharman: "Tinkerbell" - The spirit of the former ship's cat still helps her human companion through Jump in times of great need.
Lackey, Mercedes: "SCat" - See my review of her collection _Werehunter_.
Linaweaver, Brad & Fredsti, Dana: "Professor Purr's Guaranteed Allergy Cure" - Bastet, for reasons never explained, decides to kill all dogs, all humans who don't like cats, and `return the world to the true religion'. Only one cat hater, portrayed as a complete sleazeball, is to be spared when the cats take over. (The cat massacres of the 14th century, which contributed to the Black Death, are mentioned, but didn't merit such treatment.) Apparently Bastet only approves of freedom in that you're free to agree with her or die. I'll pass up this `paradise.'
Lindskold, Jane M.: "Noh Cat Afternoon" - The Daimyo offended the Fox Spirits' lord, so the Fox Spirits have entered a troupe in his Noh competition, to use his generosity against him when they win the prize. But the geisha Okesa, a cat in human guise, has other ideas.
Major, A.R.: "Totem Cat" - Who's in charge, he who sits on the cushion or those who hold doors and empty litter pans? :)
McConchie, Lyn: "Deathsong" - A dravencat story (see also Catfantastic 5).
Norton, Andre: "Noble Warrior, Teller of Fortunes" - Installment #4 (see the other volumes of Catfantastic). Thargun was separated from Emmy at the beginning of tale #3, and has now been picked up by a band of Gypsies.
Pack, Janet: "One with Jazz" - Jeff's cat Satchmo has an uncanny ability to tell good jazz from bad, so Jeff makes a foolish wager.
Scarborough, Elizabeth: "Born Again" - Peaches has earned Nirvana, but he isn't interested unless it's his cushion by the heater back home.
Schaub, Mary: "The Cat, the Sorcerer, and the Magic Mirror" - Concludes the Flax & Drop stories from 1, 2, & 3; Drop is now back in cat shape.
Again Mr. Norton pulls together a great collection.......2000-11-26
I just can't get enough of cat antics! There is something for everyone in this charming set. And I usually don't even like short stories!
A must reed for cats & the people who love them!.......1998-03-08
I am NOT owned by a cat...dogs are my weakness. However, these stories are a great read & I have many friends who ARE cat people who, though they don't usually read this genre, read these because I hooked them on them! Sigh, if it were just dogs it would be perfect...one can but hope!

Book Description
For the legions of harried moms who have tossed in the dishtowel on cooking healthy meals (or any meals!), the easiest-ever guide for bringing super nutrition back to the kitchen.
Getting dinner on the table night after night can be a challenge. So it’s no surprise that busy moms often rely on fast food, takeout, and convenience meals like macaroni & cheese, chicken nuggets, and fries. The kids love it but the drawback is that little twinge of guilt moms feel every time they feed their family another not-so-healthy meal. At the end of the day, many children end up with a poor diet high in sugar, saturated fat, and calories … a major factor in the rising rates of obesity.
Finally, here are realistic guidelines designed to give families a healthy meal makeover.
The Moms lay out a 5-Step Meal Makeover Plan, explaining how to market good nutrition to kids, establish food rules, and make life easier in the kitchen.
In The Best of the Bunch chapter they reveal which brands of kid convenience foods–hot dogs, frozen pizza, and more–are the best tasting and most nutritious ones out there.
The Moms show how to stock a healthy pantry and whip up delicious anytime meals using pantry staples.
They even serve up 120 reworked recipes for family favorites such as Fast-as-Boxed Macaroni & Cheese, Squishy Squash Lasagna, Cheesy Broccoli Soup, Sweet Potato Fries, and Chocolate Pudding with Toppers.
Customer Reviews:
I love this book!.......2007-05-29
I have had the hardest time trying to get my family to eat healthier (until now). My son is horribly picky and my husband doesn't want to eat "diet food". This cookbook has made everyone happy. We have liked almost every recipe we've tried so far. I feel so much better now that I can fix them healthier meals without them feeling like they are being punished :)
Not just for families with young children.......2007-03-16
As a nutritionist, I recommend this book to families who want to eat healthier, but wouldn't feel comfortable at the local health food store buying groceries. I also recommend this book to older adults who due to blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease find themselves needing to change their diets to be more healthful, but have always eaten a traditional meat-potatoes-vegetable meal. These recipes are great for taking recognizable food favorites and making them tasty and more heathful. I particularly love the oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe.
What's Not To Love?.......2007-03-03
There is so much to love about this book, it's hard to know where to begin. As a working mother with two children (aged 7 and 13) I am too often tempted to lower my standards for healthy eating just to save time. This book has helped me to maintain -- and raise! -- my standards. The individual recipes are fabulous, and many have become ones that I turn to time and time again. The Have It Your Way Tacos are delicious and easy to prepare, and the spice mixture for flavoring the meat means I will never again buy the high-sodium store-bought taco seasoning mix. The Blueberry Banana Pancakes have become my children's favorite way to begin a weekend or school vacation. The Ham and Cheese Pinwheels are great for home eating, or for bringing to potluck dinners and work luncheons. I always thought I'd come up with the world's greatest roasted chicken until I tried the "Mom The House Smells Great" Roasted Chicken recipe! I also adore the Best of the Bunch section, which really helps me evaluate the "all natural" claims on so many labels. The nutritional information throughout the book is an invaluable resource. I have consulted the index to find out how much calcium my daughter should be getting, whether I should believe the hype about flax seed, and what the difference is among the various kinds of fats. This book has more than earned its treasured spot in my kitchen, and it is a favorite gift for friends and family! And, the authors' website has added even more treasures to my cooking, including an Oatmeal Power Breakfast that I eat most mornings. Bravo!
Where have these recipes been all my life..............2007-03-02
I recently discovered the Mom's Guide to Meal Makeovers and absolutely fell in love with the recipes. The Easy Enchilada Bake is my favorite. I have served it to friends and family to rave reviews. The best part is that it is so healthy and good for you too. The walnut crusted salmon is also delicious. I have never liked salmon as it is too strong, but prepared this way, it's fantastic.
Looking forward to a sequel!!
Tasteless food, good information.......2007-02-15
I checked this book out from the library with high hopes of finding new, healthy and tasteful recipes for my family of 5. I have prepared 12 of the dishes and there hasn't been one that I would repeat. I will say that we have eaten most of the dishes, but they are very tasteless and not worth preparing again. The 2 stars are given because of the general information in the book. Definitely get this book from the library before buying. Not worth the purchase if you buy.

Customer Reviews:
Best training book ever! .......2007-10-04
This book was reccomended to me by a friend when I bought my two puppies and I had them trained before they were 3 months old. You have to remember that the tecniques in this book are a way of life and you must continue to do them at all times. You get used to it and it becomes second nature and the outcome is very rewarding. Puppies can be very frustrating to train but by using this book, I am actually enjoying the energy of my pups and they are respecting me.
7 IMPROVEMENTS.......2007-09-19
Jan Fennell deserves high accolades for this book and 30-day training manual! I have 7 dogs and after 4 weeks, the change is very noticeable. I have largely achieved the behavior I want with 7 dogs inside the home and they are much improved in the back yard. Soon I will move on to the car and the world outside. Traditional dog training classes just didn't cut the mustard - there was little if no discussion on how to have your dog look to you as its leader. I so enjoyed Jan's informative, fast-reading, couldn't-put-it-down book that I am reading it a second time. It's almost as if she could read your mind as to problems and questions we owners have with our dogs and the frustration we are faced with not knowing how to solve them. I only wish more people in the U.S. knew about Jan like they do about Cesar Millan. Maybe her time is coming!
"Must have" for any dog owner!!.......2007-07-03
This book was recommended to me by my dog trainer, and I am so glad! I use this book so much - Jan really understands dogs. She has the solution to any training issue or behavioral difficulty you can think of. It's all about thinking like a dog, and trying to relate to them in order to understand and work with them more effectively. Training is so much easier and quicker when you apply her methods! And the dogs seem happier and more relaxed, just like she says! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who owns a dog, or is thinking about buying a dog!
Effective. Helps establish foundation for training your dog!.......2007-04-16
A must read for all dog owners. Helps you to establish leadership within your "pack" using her 4 basic principals. I used this book as a building block to understand my dogs and establish an "Alpha" position within my pack. Once this is established, it makes training a lot easier. Other good books for understanding your dogs are "Other End of the Leash" and "Power of Positive Dog Training". For basic training I recommend "Clicking with Your Dogs" and Karen Pyor's "Clicker Training for Dogs."
New perspective for me!.......2007-04-03
We are expecting a new puppy later this year and I've been educating myself on being a responsible and informed owner. We always had dogs, cats, lizards, rabbits and such growing up. I didn't think about it until I read this book but several of our dogs had, shall we say some interesting habits. Jan Fennell shares a little of the common history man shares with our beloved dogs, as well as what happens in a wolf pack in the wild. I have to say that my entire perspective regarding dogs behaviour and training have changed. Now, I see people walking their dogs or rather the dogs walking their human and I understand what their relationship is all about. I can't wait for our new puppy and so look forward to a happy and healthy life for her. If you want to know and love your dog on a whole new, healthier level this is a must read.
p.s. If you haven't already, please read up on a raw diet for your dog.

Customer Reviews:
Definite must buy!.......2007-05-30
Love Elaine's newest book! Especially found her color bars very user friendly. They have made me my own color expert. Timing could not be better as we are renovating, remodeling and redecorating a historic cabin in Culpeper, Virgina. Color bars have been terrifically helpful.
a reader.......2005-02-14
Elaine Ryan's Color Bars were so easy to use, I can't believe someone didn't think of this before! I'm clueless when it comes to matching colors, and this foolproof method she developed easily guided me through the process of redecorating my home. I find that I can use them when matching colors in my wardrobe, too. Her book, Color Your Life, took me on a journey of discovering which colors I wanted to live with, and then once I discovered those colors, the Color Bars, showed me how to match the colors correctly. It would have been very expensive to make yet another color matching mistake!
The Best How-To Book For The Home Decorator.......2004-08-19
Elaine Ryan's book is an easy to read how-to book on decorating your home or office with color you can live with and enjoy.
It gives you tips, both practical and psychological to help you use color in decorating your home. I particularly enjoyed the subtle manner in which Ms. Ryan urges you to free yourself and take command of your life, a life that should be surrounded by color.
Don't waste your money.......2003-12-20
I was very excited about receiving the book and the color bars. Found BOTH to be totally useless! Colors are very very limited. None matched the many colors in my home at all. The book was also not helpful at all.
Don't waste your money on this junk!
a really good and different reference guide.......2002-07-15
As we are presently remodelling our home, I have been referring to this book quite a lot. It is full of interesting ideas and good tips not only about color schemes. I have given it 4 stars because I don't agree with everything the author says but most of her views are very interesting and innovative. The color bars are extremely useful and do take the guesswork out of what goes with what. I never realized how many tones and shades each color(hue) has and how certain of them really don't go together. I would recommend this book for anyone renovating or refurbishing his/her home.

Book Description
This is a collective biography of three generations of the Komissarzhevsky family whose artistic activities had an enormous impact on Russian and world theater.
Customer Reviews:
An Astonishing Feat of Family 'Portraiture'.......2001-04-21
As a lover of music and theatre I was thoroughly engrossed in this astonishing feat of family 'portraiture' of three people dedicated to their art. Although I had not previously known anything about this particular theatrical dynasty, many of the other names, plays and operas were not unfamiliar to me and I was fascinated to discover how they were connected to each other. Stanislavsky, Meyerhold and Chekhov are household names in the theatre world, but it is always enriching to learn something new about them. And because our opera and theatre traditions in the West developed separately, it is interesting to see how closely allied they were in Russia and then see how the Russian tradition in turn influenced ours. As for the Komissarzhevskys themselves, I was carried along with their joys, hopes and disappointments. I only wish I'd been alive at the time to be able to sit in a darkened auditorium and witness their genius, whether it be singing, acting or directing.
The author has obviously consulted and collected a great deal of material in the writing of this book. He gives the reader a balanced view by the many wonderful reviews, both 'good' and 'bad'(and sometimes funny), of the various performances. The excellent quality of the photographs helps to bring these people and their work to life, re-creating the atmosphere of the age.
