Book Description

Hunger and Thirst chronicles the rise and fall of the Trouts as they live out the longing, betrayal, and precariousness of family life in the Chicago Jewish culture of the fifties. Rich with period detail, the novel is a fierce exploration of a family that loves deeply, even as they are compelled to destroy. Irwina meets Buddy at the Aragon Ballroom as World War II is beginning. In a woman's life, there is only one first dance. Buddy sketches their future on a napkin and speaks the words she's been waiting for: Patou, Schiaparelli, Chanel, Vionnet. He has the walk, the fit, the money. She has the looks, the eye, the dreams. Besides, she's past thirty and can't keep living with Ma. They open a Frock Shop---only the big names---and give working-class women dignity and hope. For a while. Enter the demons. For Buddy, it's vodka, rage, gizmos, and a growing desire to possess his twelve-year-old daughter, Joan, as his wife pushes him away. Irwina loses herself in elaborate store windows, wears mother and wife like a sometimes garment, meets her imagined Unseen Partner in the flesh, and deflects attacks from a jealous Greek chorus of kalooki players known as the women-in-the-building. Only the daughter can see the storm coming. As Joan struggles to hold the family together, she's given some unusual gifts of survival and must finally choose between all that means home and all that she fears. A funny, sad, relentlessly clear-eyed story that marks the debut of a most gifted writer.

5 out of 5 stars Rewarding and Deeply Affecting.......2007-04-11

Daniela Kuper has brought to life an era in America, a culture, a way of life that is so poignant and so distinct that I can taste and smell and begin to understand. I grew up in a smallish southern city, my immediate milieu was not particularly diverse. And very different from the city life and neighborhoods of Chicago. These were not my people yet as I read Kuper's book they became vivid and chapter by chapter Kuper kept filling in the lines - images start out as bold sketches on paper in the early chapters and become detailed character studies by the end. Layer by layer each character is built.

Ok I love the ladies-in-the-building. They play the role of the Greek chorus. They often express what the main characters can not say, such as their fears or secrets. They offer background and texture. And they are just plain funny.

I have read her book several times and with each reading the characters deepen. Though the book is funny and engrossing it is not a book you can skim but must read deeply. If you do you will be rewarded and deeply affected by these characters and their lives. I am looking forward to her next.

i tried to read this book, just could not do it,sent it to my sister, and she couldn't read it either. It is so confusing to begin with, you can't figure out what it is even supposed to be about, nor who is supposed to be who.
So sorry I bought this book.

This is a truly inventive Novel- sentence after sentence arrested me with great combinations of language, character,
memory and metaphor. I could list at least 500 sentences that knocked me out.
The characters and plot kept me involved on a personal level (wondering where they were going to wind up) while enough quirky "holes" created through gaps in narrative and Kuper's mastery of metaphor created a point of view where i was able to watch the successive trainwrecks of the various lives pile up with a detached amusement.
i really enjoyed reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2004-08-30

This novel is a show-stopper -- a holy mix of dazzling language, deep thought and full-tilt emotion. It's all style and depth and characters who come walking right off the first page into your life. They lived with me in three dimensions throughout the reading of the book, and they're with me still. I'm a huge fan of much of Alice McDermott's work and, in the best sense, I think Kuper does for Jews what McDermott does for WASPS (especially compare her fine At Weddings and Wakes). This is the best novel I've read in a long, long time.

5 out of 5 stars Kudos to Kuper.......2004-08-26

OK. Let me just say it. I love this book. I loved it the first time I read it, and now, nearing the half-way point of my second reading, I think I love it even more.

I can't think of anyone since Kerouac who is more attuned to the rhythm and musicality of language in pursuit of an idea. It's like listening to Miles or Jimmi or Ella chase a melody. Every beat, every note is essential. Not an ounce of fat or frill or decoration. Daniela Kuper is not just a new voice, she's the whole damned band.

Buy this book. Take your time and pay attention. It'll open as far as you're willing to let it.

Book Description

This is a novel set at the very heart of Michael Moorcock's multiverse, in Karadur, city of metal, steam and ancient families, the mighty clans of the metal. In six days, Max Silverskin, thief and trickster, must discover the secrets of his heritage or die from the witch mark - the silverheart - which will devour his heart. Lady Rose Iron, daughter of the leader of the powerful Clan Iron is thrown into an edgy alliance with Max as she searches for the secrets that could save the city's future. Captain Cornelius Coffin, head of the clans' security forces, is in love with Lady Rose and obsessed with capturing Max. And there are others, in Shriltasi, Karadur's underworld twin, who know the prophecy which says that only Max Silverskin can save both realms.

In Silverheart, Michael Moorcock and Storm Constantine have combined their talents to produce a novel which is both surreal and gothic.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-30

This co-authored book is sort of an adjunct to Michael Moorcock's Multiverse. I think it was written with a computer game in mind, or something like that. Constantine took Moorcock's notes and input and finished off the novel.

The hero of the piece is Max Silverskin, a dodgy bloke who has to remove a magical mark, or he will cark it.

Society is divided by an allegiance to a particular metal, and Lady Rose Iron will be an ally of Max's. This makes him an enemy of her clan's security guy, who has the hots for Rose.

Questing ensues.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and sticks in your head.......2005-12-15

As a longtime sci-fi fan, I realized that I had never actually read any Moorcock besides Gloriana (which I didn't enjoy). Saw this and thought I'd try it. It was pleasant surprise - sucked me into the story, and I couldn't stop reading once it hit the end. A bit predictable in parts, but done well; the world was very well developed, and the mythos interesting. I find scenes from the book stick into my head now, and keep popping up when I'm trying to work. I'd read it again.

2 out of 5 stars Unfortunately Dull.......2005-11-05

A fascinating setting marred by dull characterizations and a tiredly familiar rpg-cliche storyline make this book a profound disappointment. Silverheart is an ode to the typically unusual Moorcockian genre with none of the charm or the lyricism that infects the pages of an actual Moorcock novel. One gets the idea while ploughing through the pages that Moorcock's contribution to the book consisted solely of a few notes scrawled on the back of a napkin, giving the finished product the necessary decor yet none of the necessary structure.

Fortunately, its publication is immediately followed by a true-written Moorcock novel, "The White Wolf's Son".

2 out of 5 stars Missed Potential.......2004-10-29

Initially this story posed some interesting characterisations and settings, hinting at the typicaly Moorcockian underlying brooding nature of the realm, its history and the background of the characters. However as the plot unfolds you might begin to feel that opportunities for the usual intrigue and depth, common in other Moorcock tales, are missed out on and the characters fail to achieve their potential. Not only that, the overall plot seems to suffer from a common problem found in a lot of 'trash fantasies' - things just happen for no apparent reason other than to satisfy some weak twist in the story. And as for the conclusion? what weak nauseating trash!

Having ready this directly after reading 'The Dreamthiefs Daughter', a true-blooded Moorcock novel, its plain to me where the weak link lies: Storm Constantine.

If you're a Moorcock fan then don't waste your money, borrow it from a library.
If on the other hand you're a Storm Constantine fan or like 'trash-fantasy' endings and plot twists then go ahead and buy - after all it may lead you to read further into the Moorcock multiverse and uncover some worthwhile and skillful writing.

3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2004-02-09

I do not believe it is accurate to blame the failings (if so they are) of this book entirely on Storm Constantine. This was a collaborative effort. While Constantine may have essentially written the story, she was in liaison with Moorcock for its conception through to its completion, and Moorcock would have undoubtedly read all the drafts and given his approval, seeing as it has his name on the cover. I doubt Moorcock would have blindly allowed Constantine to write what ever she wanted, at the sake of his own reputation.

As for my opinion of the story, I found it a tad laboured and in places quite boring. Conversely, I found it in places unusual and interesting. In other words, it is an uneven story and thus difficult to review or to describe. I will however say that there are much worse examples of fantasy on the market. Silverheart is just unremarkable, but passable. I found Silverheart more enjoyable a second time. There is a lot of detail to absorb - possibly too much, as Storm backfills at every opportunity she gets, laying it on a little too thickly. Probably it could have used some slimming down.

I am not a Moorcock fan, but it seems Moorcock fans are not thrilled with this book. As a former Constantine reader (I've gone off her a bit since the mid-nineties), I can say I am disappointed though not surprised at the outcome.

The plot: In six days Max Silverskin, thief and trickster, must discover the secrets of his heritage or perish from the witch mark - the Silverheart - on his chest which will devour his heart. Lady Rose Iron, daughter of the leader of the mighty Clan Iron in Karadur, city of metal, steam and ancient secrets, is thrown into an uneasy alliance with Max as she searches out the secrets which may save the city's future. Captain Cornelius Coffin, head of the clans' security forces, is in love with Lady Rose and obsessed with capturing Max. And there are others, in Shriltasi, Karadur's underworld twin, who know the prophecy which says that only Max Silverskin can save both realms.

And a note to Amazon: Silverheart is a COLLABORATION between Michael Moorcock AND Storm Constantine. For reasons unknown Amazon omitted Ms Constantine below the title of this book. Not very fair considering she is responsible for fleshing out the story - you know, the difficult bit.

3 out of 5 stars OH, The Potential.......2007-06-01

Several people told me to read this book and I did, but, I must admit to a bit of disappointment.
The story line was original and the plot worked but it didn't have the flesh to it. It wasn't satisfying at all. I understand that the next in the series is better but this one fell a bit flat for me.
Also the constant description of the physical attributes of the main characters got to me a bit. I would love to see it re-released but with much more about the Black Dragon and much more interaction between the characters. I didn't hate it, but I expected much more from it.

      5 out of 5 stars Oolong tea.......2007-02-02

I read this book as a teenager. The story was so compelling that I have never forgotten what it was about.

I bought as many copies as I could and gave them as gifts to my nieces and nephews... they loved the story as much as I did.. but they still think I am insane for giving them all the same book.

...."wait until they find out there is a part 2" .... (cue mad scientist FX)

4 out of 5 stars An intrigue of a little story.......2006-07-17

This little book is a quick magical read. I agree with the reviewer who said, "It very nearly defies description". It is unlike anything I've ever read, very original. While having said all this, and yes it was delightful, there were a few things that threw me out of the story. The daughter's storyline somehow didn't "fit" with the tale, even the action scenes seemed wrong somehow. And there were just so many unexplained things about Oohlong, and no follow-up. Where do they go from here? It was just a bit too strange for me. But beautiful nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars One of my faves.......2006-03-14

A fairly short read, Tea with the Black Dragon is a marvel in how it intertwines magic and realism in a modern day setting. The lead characters have a magical charm and real world quality that hold you within the story.

Take a cup of adventure, a cup of mystery, toss in a zen master that is unaware of her lightness of being, and mix with an ancient Oriental dragon. Bake for a couple hours at medium heat in the afternoon sun with a pitcher of lemonade and you have a day-off well spent.

      5 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Treasure.......2005-01-03

This is one of the books I share with people I really like. It very nearly defies description. The closest I can come is to say that I know magic when I see it, and this is magic. Mayland Long is an enigmatic oriental gentleman who just might be the human incarnation of a Chinese Dragon. Martha MacNamara is a fiftyish woman who plays fiddle in an Irish jig band, and she just may be the Zen master that Mayland Long has been waiting for. Together, they unravel a mystery that makes San Francisco of the nineteen-eighties seem as sinister and magical as any land ever depicted in a fantasy novel. Tea With the Black Dragon was written twenty years ago, so the computer technology is severely dated, but that doesn't really detract from the story. If you're anything like me, you'll be so swept up in this book that you won't notice anyway.

          Book Description

You can spend years in Paris and never hear the same answer twice to this cookbook's underlying question: what is the difference between a bistro, a brasserie, and a wine bar? In his third cookbook, acclaimed author and expert on all things French Daniel Young explains the nuances between the three, as he takes home cooks on a vibrant, spirited tour of Paris's best eateries.

Daniel explains that, as true Parisians know; a bistro is a small, informal restaurant serving a few simple, hearty dishes, while a brasserie is a larger, cafe–restaurant providing continuous service and rough–and–ready food. In a wine bar, expect to find a large selection of wines by the glass and light bites to go with them.

Daniel also introduces home cooks to many of his favorite spots (some are famous, others are his own best–keep secrets) and presents classic recipes from each, including Salmon Terrine with Leeks and Pesto, Cream of Carrot Soup with Cumin, Pan–Grilled Rib Steak with Béarnaise Sauce, and Warm Almond Cake with Caramel Cream. Bistros, brasseries, and wine bars, define what it means to be out and eat out in Paris, to dine simply and very well. Theirs is the food that nourishes and sustains the Paris of Parisians – the real and everyday Paris – with local flavor, style, sophistication, personality, and attitude.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible for Francophiles and foodies.......2006-02-02

I picked this book up expecting the recipes to be a bit out of my humble culinary grasp, and to mostly get a feel for everyday French foods and how the flavors and textures interact. I love to read books like Peter Mayle's A Year in Provence and to enjoy new experiences and places through writing.

This book surpassed my expectations. The recipes are simple, yet are not things I would have ever come up with on my own. The steps to create the dishes here are very simply laid out, and require everyday ingredients that I can get at my local supermarket, yet use combinations that are intriguing and fascinatingly foreign.

Each recipe has the French name written below the dish's title, and then has a paragraph or more describing how the flavors mingle and work together, with tips for substitutions, and background information on how/ where/ by whom the dish is usually enjoyed.

I was thrilled by this book - I expected it to be a fun diversion with a few inspirations, but the simple appetizers and small meals in this book are just the kind of easy to make but quality fare I most like to cook. This has earned a permanent place on my shelf.

Fans of the National Geographic Channel's The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan will be grateful for Cesar's Way, an accessible guide to help new and current dog owners better understand the needs of their beloved pets. If you are not yet a fan, try to catch a couple of episodes of the remarkable show--you will be amazed, impressed, and motivated to create a healthier, more fulfilling relationship with your dog. In Cesar's Way, Cesar explains that dogs are not complicated, and despite what various owners think--not human. They rely on three key elements in their lives: exercise, discipline, and affection (in that order). "Problem dogs" can be attributed to "problem owners," owners who don't understand and misinterpret their dog's behavior. Cesar's Way is really a training program for dog owners, with chapters devoted to understanding the "power of the pack," taking responsibility for "how we screw up our dogs," and learning how to manage aggression. Cesar's book (a must-have for new and old dog owners) moves beyond basic obedience school techniques, and teaches owners how to change unwanted behavior by better understanding their "best friends." --Daphne Durham

Cesar Millan's Top 5 Tips for Going to the Dog Park

          1. Make sure your dog is spayed or neutered, has all her shots, and is in good health. Under no circumstances should you bring a sick dog to a dog park!

          2. Do not use the dog park as a substitute for the walk! If you drive to the park, leave your car a block away and take your dog on a vigorous walk of at least thirty-five minutes to drain some of her energy. Never take an over-excited dog to the park.

          3. While at the park, don't "punch out" on your calm-assertive leadership. Be aware of your dog at all times, and take responsibility for her behavior.

          4. A calm-submissive dog will not attract another dog's aggression--but an excited dog, a weak, timid dog, or an aggressive dog can become a fight-magnet.

          5. Know your dog! If your dog has poor social skills, is overly fearful or is dog aggressive, or if you have not yet established your calm-assertive leadership with your dog, find a more controlled way to introduce her to the company of other dogs, such as "play dates" with one or two other dog owners.

          Book Description

“I rehabilitate dogs. I train people.” —Cesar Millan

There are at least 68 million dogs in America, and their owners lavish billions of dollars on them every year. So why do so many pampered pets have problems? In this definitive and accessible guide, Cesar Millan—star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—reveals what dogs truly need to live a happy and fulfilled life.

From his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show to his roster of celebrity clients to his reality television series, Cesar Millan is America’s most sought-after dog-behavior expert. But Cesar is not a trainer in the traditional sense—his expertise lies in his unique ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own amazing journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick. In Cesar’s Way, he shares this wisdom, laying the groundwork for you to have stronger, more satisfying relationships with your canine companions.

Cesar’s formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order. Taking readers through the basics of dog psychology and behavior, Cesar shares the inside details of some of his most fascinating cases, using them to illustrate how common behavior issues develop and, more important, how they can be corrected.

Whether you’re having issues with your dog or just want to make a good bond even stronger, this book will give you a deeper appreciation of how your dog sees the world, and it will help make your relationship with your beloved pet a richer and more rewarding one.

Learn what goes on inside your dog’s mind and develop a positive, fulfilling relationship with your best friend

In Cesar’s Way, Cesar Millan—nationally recognized dog expert and star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—helps you see the world through the eyes of your dog so you can finally eliminate problem behaviors. You’ll learn:

          • What your dog really needs may not be what you’re giving him

          • Why a dog’s natural pack instincts are the key to your happy relationship

          • How to relate to your dog on a canine level

          • There are no “problem breeds,” just problem owners

          • Why every dog needs a job

          • How to choose a dog who’s right for you and your family

          • The difference between discipline and punishment

          • And much more!

Filled with fascinating anecdotes about Cesar’s longtime clients, and including forewords by the president of the International Association of Canine Professionals and Jada Pinkett Smith, this is the only book you’ll need to forge a new, more rewarding connection with your four-legged companion.

          5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-10-07

Very interesting book. I recommend it. It is more in depth than the television show and he also talks about his life in it.

5 out of 5 stars Cesar shows how naive most pet owners are.......2007-10-06

From the sympathetic crocodile lover neighborhood in Florida that got a gardener killed because they passed laws against extracting crocs from their neighborhood to the San Francisco mother that got her child killed by her pitbull, Cesar shows the naive and stupid world of pet lovers and owners that these beasts are still amoral creatures, not moral understanding humans. As Cesar said in the Oprah Winfrey show, the biggest mistake most pet owners make is to humanize their animals and that's what gets them in trouble. According to Cesar, it's not that animals are better or lesser than humans, it's just they are not human.

          5 out of 5 stars I love Cesar!.......2007-10-04

This book is an easy read. It gives a fair amount of background as to how Cesar Millan got his start as well as the method behind his madness. Anecdotes and straight-forward advice give the reader some general ideas as to how they might curb certain pet behavior issues. You can agree or disagree with Cesar's training methods, but you have to admit the guy genuinely cares about AND has a way with both dogs and people.

          2 out of 5 stars vague.......2007-10-02

Though his basic ideas make sense, the book fails in that it never gets around to specifics. For example, Cesar tells you never to let your dog go in the door first. OK, fine...but how? Never let your dog walk ahead of you on the leash. OK, fine...but how? What can you actually do to stop the dog from going ahead of you? If you are like me, and are having problems with a dog that is physically stronger than you are, this book will not be very helpful. After reading this book I still have no idea how I'm supposed to hold back an exuberant and powerful animal so I can walk ahead of her.

4 out of 5 stars Cesar Milan- the dog Magician.......2007-09-26

Cesar Millan, is THE DOG MAGICIAN!! He has a rare, very gifted way of just knowing what is 'inside a dogs head'! Most of us humans do not have this. The book is excellent and will help many of us dog lovers to understand our wee dog friends better and give them a better life!! By Sheena from Scotland.

                          Book Description

Master woodcarver Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721) is famous for giving wood the loose and airy lightness of flowers. His flamboyant cascades of blossoms, fruits, foliage, birds, and fish dominate late 17th-century English interiors--at Windsor Castle, Hampton Court Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral, and numerous great country houses. First published in 1998, this book was the first to illustrate Gibbon's spectacular work in color--and the first to examine his unique construction methods and formidable carving techniques.

Now available in paperback, this beautifully illustrated book presents the work of Gibbons, the greatest of decorative woodcarvers, from a unique perspective--that of a fellow master carver.

                              Book Description

This unique series of paintings takes the viewer on a graphic, visionary journey through the physical, metaphysical, and spiritual anatomy of the self. From anatomically correct rendering of the body systems, Grey moves to the spiritual/energetic systems with such images as "Universal Mind Lattice," envisioning the sacred and esoteric symbolism of the body and the forces that define its living field of energy.

Includes essays on the significance of Grey's work by Ken Wilber, the eminent transpersonal psychologist, and by the noted New York art critic, Carlo McCormick.

                              3 out of 5 stars Excellent Artwork!!.......2007-05-07

This book is filled with incredible art by Alex Grey. The only problem with the book is the fact that it is listed on Amazon as a HARDBACK and it is not. This is no fault of the artist but Amazon should be sure to correctly list their products.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular art and a tool for transformation............2007-04-25

Alex Grey's art is unique, provocative, visionary and striking. The anatomical detail, overall composition and beauty is uplifting. While this type of art may not be everyone's cup of tea, it is undeniably creative and powerful.

This book is based on a series of paintings that are approximately 6'0" tall. They were meant to be used as a mirror for an individual to experience different aspects of themselves. In other words, to serve as a lens for a different perspective on what it is to be human. In general, the book proceeds from an outline of the body made up of elements, through the skelton system, blood vessels, nerves, etc. What is unique is that it goes beyond this to subtle and causal realms based on the experience of Alex Gray and the testimony of various mystics. It is meant to evoke awareness of these more subtle dimensions and even in book form could be used for meditations.

This book also contains images of Jesus, the Boddhisattva of infinite compassion and other enlightened beings. Again, these are meant for contemplative experiences where you look for these energies in yourself as part of a contemplative practice. There are also some beautiful images of a couple kissing, making love, a small family, etc. These latter category of images are similar to the cover in that they represent the various spheres of Being from the gross body through the spirit.

This book is on the large side, is printed on very high quality paper and contains a lot of color plates as well as contextual information. It is a bargain at the price it is being sold and some of the text is written by Ken Wilber.

If you are not familiar with Ken Wilber's work, either Kosmic Consciousness or A Brief History of Everything would be a great place to get started. Either of these resources will help you to appreciate Grey's art in more depth and understand what he is trying to achieve.

Alex Gray is amazing for having created pictures for the energy fields of the body as well as the body itself and the way it operates. This book is a wealth of knowledge that can be utilized to help heal yourself or use it to help teach for a wide spectrum of modalities.

                              Book Description

This book begins with a close consideration of a fundamental issue of world history, namely, the mustering of sufficient grounds or reasons for effectively dealing with the world. In the course of that beginning, it listens carefully to the attempts in this area by three prominent thinkers of the recent past, Martin Heidegger, Edmund Husserl and Jacques Derrida. From there it proceeds to work through factors of intentional consciousness misplayed by the three abovementioned stalwarts and ignored by a surprising percentage of the population. Along the way, it draws upon the efforts in this regard by novelist, Marcel Proust, physicists, Stephen Hawking, Albert Einstein, Werner Heisenberg, John Gribbin and David Darling, choreographers, George Balanchine and David Parsons, graphic designer, A.M. Cassandre, composer, Olivier Messiaen, Bill Evans, jazz pianist and composer, and film directors, Michelangelo Antonioni, Robert Bresson, Robert and Luc Dardenne, Agnes Varda and Billy Wilder.

5 out of 5 stars New realms of the problematic.......2007-01-25

If, like me, you have painful misgivings about centers of power dominating our history, namely, religion, science and humanism, this is a book you must read. Clark teases a quite amazing concerted illuminative action from the work of such seemingly exclusive figures as Heidegger, Proust, Balanchine, Antonioni and Hawking. And in pressing their insights into concrete historical action, he introduces undreamed of realms of problematicness and joy.

                                Book Description

In the Company of Actors is a wonderful ensemble of entertaining and illuminating discussions with sixteen of the most celebrated and prestigious actors in contemporary theatre, film and television. The book provides lively dialogue among the very different personalities of the participants. The actors are vital characters--by turns witty, analytical and intuitive, and all offer frank and telling anecdotes about their life and work.
Carole Zucker covers a wide range of topics including the actors' main childhood influences, their actor training, early acting experience, preparation for roles and sound advice for coping with actors' problems such as creative differences with other actors or directors. Each actor also talks about the current state of the theater and film as well as their funny (and sometimes appalling) experiences in Hollywood. With 48 black and white photographs, In the Company of Actors offers invaluable insight into the art of acting.
Includes interviews with: Eileen Atkins, Alan Bates, Simon Callow, Judi Dench, Brenda Fricker, Nigel Hawthorne, Jane Lapotaire, Janet McTeer, Stephen Rea, Ian Richardson, Miranda Richardson, Fiona Shaw, Anthony Sher, David Suchet, Janet Suzman, Penelope Wilton.

                                5 out of 5 stars A voice for actors.......2000-08-02

Don't let the "reflections" of the title throw you: this is no drowsy academic tome. This is a fascinating read for anyone interested in actors and acting. Many of the subjects are relatively unknown on this side of the Atlantic, but if you care about the process of real acting, this book will take you in, chapter by chapter. Critic Kenneth Tynan said "The study of actors should be a full-time task, worthy of the same passionate scholarship which lepidopterists devote to butterflies." What we have here is that passion's result, and Carole Zucker has given voice to the butterflies.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Always Wanted to Know About British Actors..........2000-03-07

Carole Zucker has just given us the finest book ever written on British actors.'In the Company of Actors...' is an entertaining, informative and thorough investigation into the lives and craft of some of Britain and Ireland's most popular and accomplished thespians. This particular book is so far away from the standard "actor's biography" that it would be futile to compare it to any other publication around today. It simply stands apart on all level. It is most certainly destined to become a classic. Meeting with such famous figures as Eileen Atkins, Alan Bates, Nigel Hawthorne, Stephen Rea and Miranda Richardson (among others), the author is cleverly dissolving herself into the background of the interviewing process, thus allowing the actors to really open up and to freely speak about what constitutes acting for theatre, film and television. Zucker succeeds in creating a climate of intimacy never before reached (in any given interview), and her book will make you feel like a privileged reader with a direct access into the minds of these extremely talented people. There are even moments of self-revelation which makes 'In the Company of Actors..' a brillant excercise in deep social interaction. It is an impressive display of professional savoir-faire on the part of Mrs. Zucker and a major contribution to acting studies as a whole. For the aspiring actor, the book also offers a lot of insights into the business. Whether it be Stephen Rea explaining the differences between the Irish, British and American film industries, or Academy Award nominee Janet McTeer discussing the difficulty of being a woman actor (in a male-dominated world), the book covers all bases from all angles, and no stones are left unturned. Subtely broaching theoretical and practical concerns about acting, 'In the Company of Actors...' is accessible to both, the neophyte and the acting student. If you are interested in knowing more about this wonderful and crazy profession, do yourself a favor and go buy this amazing book now!
