Book Description
In this characteristically sexy, daring, and hyperliterate novel, Kathy Acker interweaves the stories of three characters who share the same tragic flaw: a predilection for doomed, obsessive love. Rimbaud, the delinquent symbolist prodigy, is deserted by his lover Verlaine time and time again. Airplane takes a job dancing at Fun City, the seventh tier of the sex industry, in order to support her good-for-nothing boyfriend. And Capitol feels alive only when she's having sex with her brother, Quentin. In Memoriam to Identity is at once a revelatory addition to, and an irreverent critique of, the literature of decadence and self-destruction.
Customer Reviews:
My God, It's Horrible!.......2001-06-27
Okay, perhaps I'm just not as "punk" as I used to be (or consider myself), but this was instantly the worst book I've read -- well, skimmed through -- in recent memory. It is one of the few times I've ever "walked out" on a book, because it was simply unreadable.
Perhaps in 1992 this would have been considered shocking and oh-so-postmodern, but today it seems ridiculously contrived in its attempts to use offensive language, and to blur lines of pseudohistorical drama and political tracts, that it's actually laughable. Acker proves herself the queen of the non-sequitur; as these non-characters explore their useless, sex-and-violence-based relationships, they'll throw in comments about the smell of their ..., or half-baked sociopolitical theories for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON. One fun game is to count how many times a character will use the phrase "I love you" or "I hate you," with no provocation whatsoever -- somehow it reminds me of awful Italian modernist movies from the 60's. At first, her awkward style is mildly intriguing, but about 20 pages in you realize that Acker relentlessly continues in this vein, ad absurdum.
You will get NOTHING out of this novel. No insight, or even much entertainment, I expect. Perhaps for some historical value, that is, to rediscover what kind of ... people were fawning over back when postmodernism was still hot in academic (not so much artistic) circles. But nowadays, it's just a joke.
Exploring Ghastly Inner States In A Painfully Esoteric Style.......1999-06-18
This book was just way over my head. I was impressed with Acker's ability to vividly expose the true inner monologues of her characters, but I just didn't grasp the point or even what was going on half the time. This book just totally bummed me out, and left me confused.
kathy acker takes on rimbaud.......1998-12-15
kathy deconstructs rimbaud, baudelaire, and faulkner in this beautiful mess of a book. it tells the tale of the ill-fated relationship between rimbaud and baudelaire and asks if being alone is better than being in a relationship that isn't supposed to be. it also retells faulkner's sound and the fury in an updated, perverse manner. 'come alive dead heart, and sing...' kathy's approach is never subtle, and is not recommended for those easily offended, but when you accept the dirtiness, all of the beauty seeps in.

Brother G does it again "Long Live Memnon".......2007-06-01
Here is the definition of a Griot/Jeli:
The Grito/Jeli in Mande society was as a historian, advisor, arbitrator, praise singer (patronage), and storyteller. Essentially, these musicians were walking history books, preserving their ancient stories and traditions through song. They were said to have deep connections to spiritual, social, or political powers as music is associated as such. Speech is also said to have power as it can recreate history and relationships.
This word Griot or Jeli perfectly describes Brother G (Except the singing part) and what he has created in the Memnon book series. He integrates perfectly History, Fantasy and Martial Arts to create a more universal view of the world during ancient times. I was sucked in with the first book and completely won over with the second book "Shades of Memnon: Ra Force Rising". As a lover of history and martial arts I have searched and read many books about African History and Martial Arts so I loved every minute of this book. I recommend this book to anyone who is tired of the lies about African people placed in history and ignoring of our warrior traditions. I also recommend this book to anyone who just wants a different more accurate view of ancient times. What I love most about this book is the way Brother G backs up all his ideas with cold hard examination of historical, literature and scientific information from various sources ancient and modern. The best example of this is Memnonia by Dr. Clyde Ahmed Winters. This kind of scholarship and dedication to his craft has greatly impressed me and shows that a great story can teach again just like in ancient times. All people of the African Diaspora should read this book series. I am looking for Kupigana Ngumi School right now. Hotep
WICKED BOOK!.......2005-07-13
This was a WICKED follow up to the original. I wish it wasn't a seven book series just because I can't wait that long.
This should definitely be made into a movie and promoted all around.
I can't wait for Book 3!!!
Book Description
The Tert war is over, and bodyguard Parrish Plessis has gotten a piece of the toxic pie-and the responsibilities that go along with it. To pay off a blood debt to the Cabal Coomera tribe, she must enter the heart of tekno-darkness-the slum town of Dis-to find their missing shamans and to kill her ex-lover Daac. But Parrish still has feelings for Daac-feelings that run as deep as the high-tech parasite he infected her with. Bad blood never boiled like this. REVIEW; The world of Parrish Plessis is complex, frenzied, bloody and improbably dangerous. (Warpcore SF)
Customer Reviews:
Australian SF Reader.......2007-08-01
After a violent conflict over the Tert, Parrish comes out the other side somewhat successful. She is now a boss in her own right, with her own income stream and people that want to work for her.
There is still the higher level situation to deal with, and again the machinations of others involve her as he goes on a hazardous mission to Dis, where genetic experimentation and what, if anything, is sharing her body drive her to finding out what is going on.
She has to work out if she is a saviour, or not.
Good If you can Still Keep up.......2007-01-10
Code Noir Is The second Novel of the Parrish Plessis Series. In Code Noir we Find Parrish dealing with rewards and consequences of her actions from the last Novel. She finds she has little time to relax as Debts are owed to and from her as she soon discovers. and Several loose ends from the last novel are still relatively loose in this sequel. This time Parrish has not only her life to worry about but her very sense of self. Code Noir still has the same feel as the last Novel but is a little more focused in the story telling. despite this I am waiting to see what happens next.
Go Parrish.......2006-09-01
What can I say, I love heroines who live on the edge. What an edge it is. Journey into the land of DNA gone made. People sell their own skins for money, want to guess what they will do to you?. A world so toxic that it doesnt need an army, because a stranger is not likely to survive in its normal mode.
Love that kills and alien infestions, debts owed to mystic cabals. Strange mutated critters find Parrish a sucker and save her life.
I am not telling the story; if this doesnt intrigue you, this isnt the book for you.
stars a female "Mad Maxine".......2006-07-05
The Tert War (see NYLON ANGEL) is over and active participants like Parrish Plessis must find a new niche or die. Parrish seems to have adapted having made a success of herself in the post war era as a warlord though she also is a criminal. However, much of what she achieves she owes to the Cabal Coomera who suddenly calls in her blood debt; failure to do their bidding means her blood pays the debt.
The Cabal tasks her with finding their abducted, probably dead, shamans who have gone missing, uncover the identity of the culprit, and kill Loyl me Daac who connects the dots at least in their logic system. The first part of the tasking is simple enough though she fears the reaction of the lethal membership if she brings back a corpse or two. The second chore requires some sleuthing also, but she feels confident she can achieve the objective. However their final assignment is a bit more personal as Loyl me Daac is her former lover whom she still cares about as much as she can anyone, but also in some ways loathes.
The second Plessis' post-apocalypse thriller stars a female "Mad Maxine" in a world filled with nasty individuals who abuse power supporting Voltaire's philosophy about institutions. The gripping story line is much darker and grittier than the first tale as the societal divides emphasizes class, species, and authority differences in which power is everything. The heroine is a terrific protagonist as she keeps the tale focused in her efforts to walk a thin line where a misstep means death.

Parrish Plessis continues to kick a$$..........2005-08-11
First if you haven't read Nylon Angel, stop. Go back, read it then pick up Code Noir. Not essential but it sure helps when following the sf aussie style lingo and to a get a feel for the characers.
With that said after NA, I couldn't wait a whole year for the publisher to get it out to the US market and ordered it from the UK(Canada has it too). Parrish Plessis is muscle for hire who managed to wipe out her cruel mob boss to become her own warlord and should be able to take it easy and catch her breath.
Not so. Her new allies(?), the aboriginal and mysteriously spiritual Cabal Coomera has a job for her than she can't refuse(even if she wanted to), find their missing shamans and do it before a crucial Spiritual equinox called King Tide. As if that's not enough of a problem, she still has to protect her new turf, settle issues with Loyl-Me-Daac whom she can't decide whether to kill as ordered or sleep with as fantasized about, provide for the orphaned ferals that keep looking to her for help, or, oh yeah, when she gets around to it she may want to do something about the ESKALIM PARASITE that's trying to take over her body and soul to remake into something less than human.
But hey, everyone's got problems, right?
Seriously, I can't think of a cyberpunk series this good since Effinger's Fire in the Sun or Stephenson's Snow Crash. Easier to follow than GIBSON and more action that Blade Runner with characters you can't help but invest in.
Make Mine PARRISH! Titanium tough and loaded for gritty, up close and personal, bloody lip, brawling and knife/gunfighting, plus sexy to boot. What's not to like?
Grrrl power gets a spirtual leg-up in gen-mod hell.......2004-08-10
In this sequel to Marriane de Pierre's debut `Nylon Angel', the original no-nonsense grrrl, Parrish Plessis, continues to avalanche through life, ripping up anything or anyone in her path, while collecting mutants and reprobates along the way.
The high festival of King Tide is fast approaching and the Cabal Coomera call in Parrish Plessis' goma - a blood debt - to rescue their clever men.
During the mission Parrish hooks up with her sexual Achilles-heal, Loyl Daac and they head into Mo-Vay - a toxic, genetically modified hell. But it's the least of her worries. Her bigger concerns include flushing out the voodoo queen Leesa Tulu and Mo-Vay's answer to Dr. Frankenstein, Ike while fighting her own internal evil manifest in the form of a parasite, the Eskaalim. However, she surprises even herself when she discovers a spiritual strength that usurps her usual gun-toting, ass-kicking self and leads her into victory.
In this series Marianne de Pierres manages to subtly integrate indigenous Australian spiritualism with the exploration of dark speculative themes that are allayed only by her well-honed and highly appropriate black humour.

Book Description
Juggling work, school, family, and home seems to be the norm in today’s hurried world. Many of us often grab a quick bite and keep on moving, sidelining healthful eating habits and nutrition. How wonderful it would be to wind down after a long, hard day with a wholesome, home-cooked meal. Now, the American Heart Association, America’s most trusted authority on heart-healthy living and diet, presents a brand-new cookbook that can help.
One-Dish Meals is designed for the millions of health-conscious Americans who are always on the go.
The more than 200 simple and tasty one-dish recipes offer sensible, convenient alternatives to fatty fast food and high-sodium frozen dinners. The American Heart Association once again proves that healthful, satisfying meals needn’t mean sacrificing great flavors or precious time. Many of these delicious dinners practically cook themselves. And forget about washing a sinkful of dishes, because almost every recipe here cooks in just one pot—so dinner is easy to make and quick to clean up.
Arranged by category—meat, poultry, seafood, or vegetarian—each recipe includes nutrients essential for heart-healthy living. You’ll find everything from weeknight dinners to special-occasion favorites—from stews, meat loaf, and pot roasts to cassoulets, enchiladas, and even a tagine. All you need is one dish and this cookbook, and in no time at all, you’ll have a healthful, home-cooked meal.

Nice.......2007-01-09
Great cookbook. I have made several recipes from this book. It is good for people who need to watch their salt intake.
Good book.......2007-01-09
I bought this when my husband was diagnosed with some heart issues. It is a good book but I have found that I'm not much of a cook book cooker. I normally dash home after work and throw something together that we both like and is tasty. The things I have made out of this book were good and we both like them but just didn't end up in our usual rotation.
Aha!.......2006-12-09
While I won't pretend that every recipe in this book looks great, what I've liked what I've tried so far and my heart has approved them. I expect to purchase other books in this American Heart Association series.
My new "cooking bible"!.......2006-09-11
I LOVE to cook and have always done a lot of Tex-Mex, Mediterranean, Indian, Asian, etc. Thing is, now I'm caring for my elderly parents and my dad was placed on a 2g sodium diet *gah!* so I needed to make a little adjustment.
I cook from One Dish Meals almost every day and make up my weekly shopping list from it. The recipes are so fast and easy, and even though I only have 2g of sodium to play around with daily, there's nothing bland about it! My dad used to have a salt shaker practically glued to his hand so I thought the adjustment to low sodium was going to be difficult on that dementia patient. NO problem at all. The recipes include so many flavors from around the world and although there are some recipes that aren't appealing enough to me to cook (as in any cookbook) I find that there is enough variety of flavors to use the book every night of the week and have been doing so for about 6-8 months now. It usually takes me from 30 to 45 minutes from start to serving a dinner. I love it!
Keep it or return it? I'm sitting on the fence..........2006-07-18
I looked through nearly every page last night and the book is back in the bag with the receipt ready to be returned. Although I don't think it's a "bad" book, it's just not what I expected. Not all of the recipes are truly "one dish" and it's got a heavy emphasis on fish. The recipies in general are not typical meals I would be overly enthused to make--or serve. We are not picky eaters but I can't imagine making some of these recipes and serving them without expecting a negative reaction from my husband. We might try at most a half dozen of the recipes but we're not likely to repeat them. So, I think it's best I return it.
Customer Reviews:
Highly Disappointed.......2007-09-21
Being half-Taiwanese, I was really interested in seeing (A)what recipes and (B)insights the author would have on Taiwanese holidays and holiday foods.
I was sorely disappointed, on both points. The author seems curious in Taiwan's culture, but only in a very pro-West, "how quaint" sort of way, without any deeper understanding of Taiwan's festivals and holidays. The recipes are also approached in a very Western manner, and the recipes themselves are also very Westernized.
In its place, I highly recommend books in the Wei-Chuan series, such as Chinese Snacks (Wei quan shi pu), Chinese Cooking Made Easy: With Simple Sauces and Dressings (Wei-chuans cookbook), Chinese Cuisine: Taiwanese Style, and Chinese One Dish Meals.
recipes are NOT accurate and missing key ingredients.......2003-01-28
This book was written by a woman who lived in Taiwan because her husband was transferred there for work. She is not knowledgeable enough to be writing a cookbook on Taiwanese cuisine. If you are Taiwanese or are familiar with Taiwanese cuisine, you will realize this right away when you look at her recipes. The recipes are MISSING KEY INGREDIENTS that make the dish taste the way it should. For example, the oyster omelet recipe does not have sweet potato starch in it. This is a key ingredient which makes the Taiwanese oyster omelet taste the way it does.
In addition, there are NO pictures and written from a point of view which would make me suspect that the author got the recipes from the internet or quickly jotted down the recipes instead of actually cooking/testing the recipes and trying them out.

Book Description
American wildfowl art owes its foundation to Lem Ward. This wood carver and painter (1896-1984) overcame severe illness to produce some of the best-loved wildfowl art extant today. Lem and his brother Steve grew up along the marshes of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and subsisted as barbers and foragers. They created carved and painted ducks to please their independent selves-as works of art, while carvers around them were making decoys just good enough for hunting. Here Lem's life story is told by his daughter Ida who was beside Lem for almost the entire span of his artistic career.
Customer Reviews:
A daughter's tribute to a "National Treasure".......2000-05-10
The Japanese recognize those people who acheive "cult" status in their country by making them National Treasures. This book, written by Lem Ward's daughter Ida Linton is truly a biter-sweet trip through the making of one of America's truly great carved waterfowl painters. Along with his brother Steven who was primarily a carver, the Ward Brothers made a major impact on the world of waterfowl counterfits. As Ida tells the story, you live along with Lem from his hair cutting days, through the depression, and into the later years of his life, with all of it's trials and tribulations. It seems that these things shape a man, as I am sure they, with his faith in God, shaped him. If you like waterfowl carvings as I do I am sure you will be touched with this story of the Ward's legacy.

Interesting & Generously Illustrated.......2005-03-06
It is a pity this book is out of print: it is an excellant introduction to what pre-20th century life was like materially for the middle and lower class, and would be interesting to older children. If you can find it in a library, or as a cheap used book (the 1987 price was $24.95, by the way) it is worth a read. Although the author is English, much of it would be applicable to North American life.
There is lots of trivia to be found here: where "the pot calling the kettle black" comes from, why Monday was washing day, the difference between ale and beer, how many spinners it took to keep one weaver busy, and much more. It is generously illustrated, with drawings (sometimes in colour) & sometimes old photographs on every page. There are 187 pages plus a good index.
The largest flaw, from my perspective, is that Seymour's editorial voice can be very strong at times: while he points out how much easier life is made by vacuum cleaners, enclosed ranges, &c., he is clearly nostalgic for "the good old times". He stands "in awe of the real housewife"; men may run a house, but not a home. If you are not comfortable with "equal but seperate"-and I like to think that few of us are-you will find the introduction disappointing. But you can still enjoy the wealth of information in this book.
The reader who is interested in this as a reference tool will also be disappointed that it is sometimes unclear what timespan his information is valid during, and there is no bibliography for further reading or to verify his information.
A great history book.......2000-09-19
My mother bought me this book at a Barnes&Noble sale many, many, years ago. I have loved it ever since. The drawings and photographs included in the book give it a homey feel. The writing and style of the book, along with the author's own childhood experiences, help to create a welcoming atmosphere. A great book, I like how the author chose a mildew-speckled paper print for the inside covers, he is poking a little fun at himself.
Remembrance of Things Lost.......2000-03-09
If you've ever wondered how your grandmother or greatgrandmother functioned without Walmart, or perhaps wondered how to manage a household if you leave civilization behind, or are a history buff, this is an indispensible book. Filled with colored pencil drawings, and clear concise text, it shows how women supplied the needs of their households. The main categories are: Kitchen Crafts, Dairy Crafts, Laundry Crafts, Around the Home, Textile Crafts, and Decorative Crafts. Each of these holds a true wealth of information that is lost to us today. As a longtime seeker for women's historic lifstyles, I have seen no book better, complete yet simple to understand, that addresses how our elders lived. If you find it grab it! This is abook that should be passed down. The frontspiece says another of Seymour's books, The Forgotten Crafts is a companion volume to this book.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent and useful book for austen Fans.......2005-10-22
This has the advantage of being a great browsing book for the pictures but is also an excellent reference.
This is more than just another biography of Austen (although it has a bit more background on the Austen and Leigh families than you would necessarily expect in a book of this length. It is well done. The family and their relatives are put into context well for their time and social millieu. What separates this book from many others is that it is very much about what Austen would have used for her eating, drinking, writing etc, and where she would have brought them from.
Susan Watkins has managed to dig up some excellent pictures, many of which I haven't seen before, and are well referenced through the text.
Watkins has a very easy and readable style of writing. This is really very much for the Jane Austen and Regency fan - those who enjoy reading Georgette Heyer will really get a lot out of this book as well.

this book is wonderful because not many books describe the way that persian royals lived, how life in the royal court was, and what happened to the court after the revoulotion.

Book Description
As the seventies dawn, Peter Nichols is watching his hit play, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, being filmed-and hating it. His next play, The National Health, is doing good box office for Olivier's National Theatre-but Olivier is hating it. And Forget-Me-Not-Lane is soon to open at the new Greenwich Theatre amid much anxiety. A wry and revealing sideways look at the seventies from one of that decade's most successful playwrights.
