Reminded me of Heinlein..........2006-02-13
...In that the book went along great for a while. Made sense, moving pace, interesting characters, but then it delved into something akin to a hallucinogenic cartoon paradise and ceased to make sense.
I still don't understand why Pippa's solution to her daughter being taken away was to run off to a cabin in the woods and "find her inner witch." Then she donned some ratty clothing given to her by a sympathizer and, dressed as an old crone, paraded her way into town, scaring the townsfolk in the process.
I was hoping for a saner book. Before that point of Wizard of Oz-esque fantasy, it was a very good book. Richard Grant is a very good writer and has a lot to offer. I'm interested in his other books, but In the Land of Winter left me a bit dubious.
I hope he writes more, but leaves the Heinleinish acid trips out of it.
"In the Land of Winter" left me cold.......2004-12-31
I must agree with Ms. Jordan. I so wanted to love this book, and I kept hoping that it would improve as I read. It never really did. It was difficult to sympathize with Pippa--the journey to reclaim her child seemed secondary to her own quest to discover herself. And I'm still not sure what exactly she discovered. Pippa's passivity made me continually want to scream, "Ye gods, girl, don't just stand there, DO SOMETHING!" None of the characters seemed very well fleshed out, the plot meandered to a most unlikely ending, and when it was all over, I thought, "what a great story poorly done." A disappointment.
Sorry, I agree with Kirkus Reviews.......2004-05-18
I hoped this book would provide a thoughtful exploration of intolerance, discrimination and pagan practices. What I got was a novel filled with cartoon characters. I am no fan of religious zealots of any creed, but Pippa's persecutors were so stereotypical they had me rolling my eyes in disbelief. They might as well have been wagging their fingers at her and shouting "She's a witch, burn her!" in Monty-Pythonesque voices.
Pippa wasn't a particularly believable modern witch, either. When she should be fighting tooth and nail to get her daughter back, she goes off to the woods to find her inner witchiness or some such nonsense.
I only finished the book because I really, really wanted to like it, but I just didn't.
A great book!.......2003-08-20
Grant writes a beautiful story that had me cheering for Pippa & Winterbelle against the ignorant masses.
Should be considered a classic.......2003-07-09
Beautifully written, deeply felt, and dealing with some of the most prevalent issues of humankind, In the Land of Winter should be considered a classic American novel.
Grant bravely explores the politics of religion in America, coupled with the part of the human psyche which allows otherwise normal people to join in ravening, thoughtless mobs. Why are scapegoats chosen? Why do people in the mob so easily lose their humanity? The way Grant goes about exposing this human darkness, and his way of dramatizing it, is sheer genius.
Besides beautiful language, there's sharp characterization, great dialogue, and incredible description. And even flashes of masterful wit and humor.
The hysteria over Satanic ritual abuse may be passe, but the human inclination to see "witches" around every corner, and blame them for everything from crop failure to ADD, is still very much with us. For that reason, unfortunately In the Land of Winter will never be dated.
A number of people might object to seeing their Christian religion portrayed as less than attractive. The chief villain in Land of Winter is a Christian. I doubt she is meant to represent the best Christianity has to offer. Grant makes sure that the protagonist understands this. So, before flying into moral outrage, try to remember a few things. One, turnabout is fair play--Christians have portrayed non-Christian religions for centuries as the evil villains. And two, pray for some humility and open mindedness. Try to learn something from the perspective of those who live outside your paradigm. It could be a valuable learning experience.

Behind the curtain.......2006-04-14
Find out who has been pulling the strings behind the conspiracy that has been a part of Bruce Jones excellent run on the Hulk.
The conspiracy comes to an end, or does it?.......2004-10-24
Bruce Jones' long running conspiracy storyline that has been fueling his Hulk run comes to a close in Big Things. Beginning with fugitive on the run Bruce Banner having a run in with Tony "Iron Man" Stark, he learns the armored hero may have something to do with the mysterious death of one of his lady friends. This arc isn't as great as some of Jones' other Hulk material, but it's still solid action fare as we get to see the green goliath and 'ol shell head duke it out. The final two issues collected in Big Things begins with Bruce waking up to find the world a nuclear wasteland. And oh yeah, the big revelation is here too. Just who is the man behind those sneering lips? Who is the man that has been behind the framing of Banner and the rest of the conspiracy? It's here, and I have to admit it really wasn't much of a shocker. Doc Samson, Betty "Mr. Blue" Ross, and Nadia Blonsky are along for the ride; with a surprisingly tragic ending in tow. The art by various artists (Mike Deodato, Dougie Brathwaite, Darick Robertson, etc.) is all great work as well, even though at some spots it looks a bit cartoony. Longtime readers of Jones' run may find a bit of a disappointment here at the end of the conspiracy arc, but despite that, this is still a solid piece of work.

Recipes Designed for Your Phase.......2007-03-29
Phase 1 Low Carb Diet Cookbook as well as Phase 11 Low Carb Diet Cookbook by Better Homes and Gardens, are geared for every kind of cook.
Simple ingredients to find (not so with other low carb books, i.e. South Beach, as I had to go to three stores before I got all ingredients for one dish)!
Recipes are easy to follow, and simple enough to make for the novice cook.
Items are visually attractive, tasty, not dry, bland and uninviting as some low carb recipes tend to be.
The fats included might be a bit high for those following diets that sharply cut fats along with carbs, though one can adjust them to suit with little effort.
All of the recipes I have made were so tasty, that even some non-low carb dieters requested them when I made them for potluck dinners!!!
Fantastic.......2006-03-10
I think the concepts of the Phase Cookbooks are wonderful. Often times when you get a low carb cookbook you have to search and search for recipes you can actually use in the phase you are in. With this there is no guessing and most are very simple. I've used several of these receipes so far and four out of five were delicious!
Low Carb Recipes.......2005-07-24
Loved the recipes in this book. Has beautiful pictures of the food that make you want to try various recipes. Who would have thought that Crheese-crusted Cauliflower could be a diet food? Grilled Bass with Strawberry Salsa, yum!! Lots of good salsa recipes you can use for fish, chicken or just dipping with fat free chips. Loved this book!!!
Phase 2 the Easy Way.......2005-07-09
This book is an excellent addition to the Phase 2 Low-Carb Recipes book. Continued EASY healthy recipies that are fun fast and great for you!!!

Customer Reviews:
The essential puppy book.......2007-01-04
This is a MUST for all owners of puppies - in fact it should be issued to all intending owners prior to bringing that little bundle home. The book is extremely well organised, the writing clear and well illustrated, the content sound and up-to-date, in fact we can't fault this book given it's intended audience.
The perfect puppy.......2006-11-12
A good reference book and easy reading. Most information very helpful.
perfect puppy.......2006-11-11
you can not go wrong with this book, you need patience but it is very rewarding at the end of the training. My pup is very good at 16weeks old.
Pretty good.......2006-08-20
This book is full of GREAT information and was very helpful since I had never owned a dog before. But I only gave it three stars because it doesn't have anything that you can't already find online for free! It will be a good reference if I am in a training situation and the power goes out, thus limiting my access to the internet!
COMMON SENSE ON A STICK!.......2005-09-19
This book has all you will ever need to have the perfect dog.
No silly psycho-babble....just common - every day plan to have a great dog!!
Customer Reviews:
Good book for beginners.......2007-05-12
I really liked this book, and found it to be very informative. I think this book is a good place to start if you're trying to learn more about raising a puppy. It delves into the pros and cons of having more than when dog, if you should get two puppies from the same litter, etc. The section on how to be the leader was also helpful--I'm still not sure about the tug of war debate (to play or not to play), though. The author suggests that if you do play tug of war with your puppy/dog, you should win more that he does, while other authors say not to play tug of war at all because it will teach your dog the power of his jaws.

Buy Second Edition.......2005-09-10
I own Wheatley's Collectable Glass Shoes, second edition, a wonderful book for glass and china shoe collectors. I love the color photos and descriptions and lay-out. I bought the first edition hoping that it would contain pictures of shoes that were not kept for the second edition. After comparing the books, I find that the second edition is far better. I hope this wonderful author and collector creates a third edition. The prices listed are wildly inflated compared to what I have observed being paid on Ebay.
"For the shoe collector".......2001-10-28
This is truly a great book......It is packed with lots of great information.I've learned alot of companies that I did not know of, that make/made them.Giving me new names and
places to search. And the price guide is super!I feel confident bidding on the auctions now.Now I know when to stop myself! Thanks for such a good buying experience!!!!!!!And for making
collecting shoes so much fun!!!!!
Sincerly,
Wanda Human
Valuable Reference for Glass Shoe Collectors.......2000-05-20
About 40% of the book is glass shoes. Great photos, exact descriptions, great reference for identification. I especially appreciated the section on reproductions and re-introductions. Very useful for telling the valuable old stuff from the not-so-valuable new stuff. And a fair treatment of the somewhat valuable new stuff. Prices are a little too moderate, in my experience. Too high on the common items, way too low on the rare ones. But useful guidelines, nonetheless. Caution: you will want to buy everything shown in the book.

A Triumph of Collectible Research!.......2004-05-31
This author has extensively researched a previously little-known subject. This book is so complete that I think auction houses will use it as a reference. The photographs are stunning and the line drawings extremely detailed. Prices are listed for each item, which is most helpful. What is invaluable is the effort the author has made to trace the manufacturers of as many shoes as possible. What a bonus for shoe collectors!

"...an experienced architectural carver...shows his craft in a step-by
-step manner, explaining tool use, wood choices, and different styles
of carving....stands out because of its great section on tool use....offers
a wealth of both traditional and innovative information; for example, he
employs inexpensive pneumatic chisels...a great technique that this reviewer
has never seen anywhere else. The techniques revealed here could be used by
most woodcarvers, not just those interested in architectural carving....among
the best on the subject and is essential for all woodcraft collections..."--Library Journal.

Best in Class.......2004-11-21
Common sense innovation, a sense of humor and a 'can do' attitude are the ingredients in creating the masterful works of art by Mike Burton. He writes in a way that sounds like he's talking to a friend.
Don't have a lot of funds to buy those certain do-all, can't-live-without-tools that you see the other pro's use? That's just fine, because Burton will show you how to make what you need and keep your wallet intact.
He even explains how you can resharpen rotary burrs and an old, rusty rasp by using some toilet bowl cleaner. Anybody else would have told you to buy new stuff. If you've ever thought about getting involved in architectural carving, or just want to further your mental horizons of how these works of art are made, then, this is a must-have book.
Practical, insightful, innovative techniques .......2004-11-16
What a great book! The clear, concise explanations guide me step by step and I don't need to be a master craftsman or artist to turn my projects from stictly plain-practical to exciting and beautiful.
Most helpful was the way the author showed how to use and improvise tools to make my designs come to life in wood. My lamp project will light up the room in more ways than with bulbs when I finish.
Thank you, Mike Burton, for taking my woodworking to another level.
