    Book Description

This volume makes available for the first time in English two of the most important novels of Japanese colonialism: Yuasa Katsuei’s Kannani and Document of Flames. Born in Japan in 1910 and raised in Korea, Yuasa was an eyewitness to the ravages of the Japanese occupation. In both of the novels presented here, he is clearly critical of Japanese imperialism. Kannani (1934) stands alone within Japanese literature in its graphic depictions of the racism and poverty endured by the colonized Koreans. Document of Flames (1935) brings issues of class and gender into sharp focus. It tells the story of Tokiko, a divorced woman displaced from her Japanese home who finds herself forced to work as a prostitute in Korea to support herself and her child. Tokiko eventually becomes a landowner and oppressor of the Koreans she lives amongst, a transformation suggesting that the struggle against oppression often ends up replicating the structure of domination.

In his introduction, Mark Driscoll provides a nuanced and engaging discussion of Yuasa’s life and work and of the cultural politics of Japanese colonialism. He describes Yuasa’s sharp turn, in the years following the publication of Kannani and Document of Flames, toward support for Japanese nationalism and the assimilation of Koreans into Japanese culture. This abrupt ideological reversal has made Yuasa’s early writing—initially censored for its anticolonialism—all the more controversial. In a masterful concluding essay, Driscoll connects these novels to larger theoretical issues, demonstrating how a deep understanding of Japanese imperialism challenges prevailing accounts of postcolonialism.

This book was hottt!!! The main character had issues. I don't think she thought things through. I reccomend this book to everyone.

    1 out of 5 stars Only because I couldn't go any lower.......2006-06-27

This book was not good. It sounded like the ramblings of a 17 year old girl. It was terrible, I just wasn't feeling it. And I am very disappointed because I got this book on the strength of the reviews, they must have been her cousins or something, because I just don't understand how they could give this mess more than two stars (and I am being very generous with 2).

    2 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book by its cover.......2006-06-18

And don't buy a book based on good reviews by readers. I gave the author two stars for her effort but for me this book was a big disappointment. I forced myself to finish it to find out why so many here thought it was great. It was nothing more than the story of a woman bouncing from man to man and job to job, doing almost anything for money. The characters were too vague.

    4 out of 5 stars Big B from D.C........2006-06-06

I read the reviews from some people and almost didn't get this book. I'm glad I didn't take these reviews to heart because this was a (you know what) good book. I saw at least three people reading it at my job last week. A note to a few of those reviewers. ITS JUST ENTERTAINMENT! I think a few of you are getting way too deep. Its not that serious.

I don't usually read urban fiction, but I read it and couldn't put it down. And I see she's from the D.C. area.

Keep doing what you're doing Miss Lady and D.C. is gonna keep supporting you!

1 out of 5 stars Why Oh Why..........2006-06-02

Do I keep picking these duds? It's funny that this book quotes an African proverb "If you want to know the end, look at the beginning" like it's actually going to have a point.

The first chapter introduces you to the title character, trifling, no good mother Zsaset. She makes herself out to be so smart but jumps from men like a fly jumps to --well you know what I mean. Zsaset doesn't learn from her mistakes, drags her daughter from man to man, while leaving her sick mother to raise her son.

Unfortunately, there are women in real life like Zsaset, I'd just rather not waste 260 pages reading about them. Bottom line, this is a waste of time.

4 out of 5 stars Introducing Savvy Skye.......2004-05-28

In keeping with the tradition of trying to alert readers to books they would probably overlook, this week I am recommending THE MONSTER OF MINNESOTA by Mark Sumner.

Billed as a cross between the Cat Who... books and the X-Files, this is the story of Savannah McKinnon, a writer for a notorious supermarket tabloid. Although she works for a tabloid, Savvy wants to get into serious journalism. When she gets a tip off the line about a lake monster that involves several deaths, Savvy goes out and does the almost unthinkable; she lands a field assignment. But things don't go quite the way she had hoped. First, her source turns out to be a kid. Then other bits of the case go sour. But there are still the bodies, the monster rumors, and a new chemical plant that seems to be killing of the fishing trade; a trade that keeps the town alive. Slowly Savvy begins to put together the pieces and her chances or a serious story.

THE MONSTER OF MINNESOTA is the first in a series called News From the Edge. The ending leaves plenty of room for Savvy to continue on her journalistic path. This book is really a mystery with an element of the fantastic and written by an author who seems to understand the genres. Savvy is a talented and interesting character. As with a modern trend in mysteries Savvy has her sights set on an equally interesting man. He runs a small weekly paper that she often submits articles to (which displeases her boss at the tabloid). The two have an interesting relationship that promises further development if the series continues.

          4 out of 5 stars Nice.......2004-05-03

Not a big "You HAVE to read this!", something quick and amusing to read when you're bored. Especially cool if you're in to cryptozoology.

2 out of 5 stars Bland, cliched, redundant.......2002-09-10

This book "tries too hard" to be about a sleazy tabloid. All the tabloid cliches are there (staff photographer doctors lizard photos, Bigfoot is considered a "big story," the gossip columnist is dressed loud and tacky). If the author had researched tabloids, he'd know that the National Enquirer, et al, have not covered Elvis, Bigfoot, or aliens since the 1970s. And the Weekly World News is a parody.

Worse, this story is told first person by a bullying, unlikeable character mouthing noir cliches, like she stepped out of a 1940s movie. And she's ALWAYS talking about her tangled hair and "too-tight" clothes. Okay, so maybe the author is trying to "build empathy" with his female readers -- but he's made his point. No need to keep telling us the character "feels fat" and has "tangled hair." I wanted to shave her head already.

The story ranges from dull to moments of okay. As can be expected, this gal reporter hates working for a tabloid, wants a Pulitzer, hopes this story will be her big break out of "tabloid hell," lies to her fat Italian editor (shades of Kolchak's Tony Vinchenzo?), yada yada, chiche, chiche.

There's also the usual politically correct stuff. ... redneck sheriffs, ... chemical plant, good environmental conscious Native Americans. If you're hip to PC cliches, you've guess the villain, and his supporters, as they show up. No surprises in this paint by number non-mystery.

3 out of 5 stars A cute, light, and quick read........2002-01-01

The story is cute. Read it if you want something quick and not too deep. The characters are developed only as far as they need to be. There is a loose end that isn't tied up at the climax (one of the deaths isn't explained), but otherwise, it is cleanly written.

5 out of 5 stars Charming! Go get it before it becomes a tabloid rumor.......1997-07-22

This slim little book is probably going to disappear like Nessie diving in cold water, but while it's here mystery fans have a chance to visit with a charming and, dare I say, *spunky* heroine. Cleverly plotted and colorful.

Lidia Bastianich moved to the United States in 1959 from Trieste in northern Italy. She was 12 years old. Her actual home was over the line, in what became Yugoslavia after World War II. So food, for Bastianich, was both what made her family different from everyone they lived around in their new home in New York State and the anchor that held her family together. Bastianich calls this visceral sense of food "Lidia's Italian Table." It's the name of her PBS series and of this book, which accompanies the series.

In sections that include antipasti, soups, pasta, risotto, gnocchi, polenta, vegetables, game and chicken, meats, fish and shellfish, and sweets, Lidia sweeps readers up into her arms and hugs them with the likes of Baked Onions with Butternut Squash Filling; Sauerkraut and Bean Soup; Bow Ties with Sausage and Leek Sauce; Shrimp Risotto; Fennel, Olive, and Citrus Salad; Braised Venison with Polenta; Baked Squid and Potatoes; and Zucchini Cake. Notice how most of these dishes have a familiar "Italian" ring, yet stretch beyond whatever that notion typically includes--the soup with sauerkraut, for example. Lidia's table is set in a part of Italy that doesn't get a lot of ready play. It's Italian, but then some. A little extra. If you try it, you may find it difficult to get up from Lidia's table. You may just want to stay. --Schuyler Ingle

          Book Description

          Lidia's Italian Table

          LIDIA MATTICCHIO BASTIANICH

"Let me invite you on a journey with me from my childhood ..." beckons Lidia Bastianich, hostess of the national public television series Lidia's Italian Table. And what an incredible journey it proves to be.

Lidia's Italian Table is overflowing with glorious Italian food, highlighted by Lidia's personal collection of recipes accumulated since her childhood in Istria, located in northern Italy on the Adriatic Sea. Hearty and heartwarming Italian fare is what Lidia understands best, and each chapter of this gorgeous cookbook is infused with Lidia's warm memories of a lifetime of eating and cooking Italian style.

Since good Italian food is based on good ingredients, Lidia includes an eloquent discourse on those products that are the cornerstones of Italian cuisine: olives (and their green-golden oil), Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, salt, porcini mushrooms, truffles, tomato paste, and hot peppers. She also explains the importance of regional wines and grappa (in flavors from honey to dried fig) in the Italian food experience. Her recipes are filled with these Italian delicacies--Fennel, Olive, and Citrus Salad; Tagliatelle with Porcini Mushroom Sauce; Seared Rabbit Loin over Arugula with Truffle Dressing; Asparagus Gratin with Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese-, and Zabaglione with Barolo Wine.

Lidia explores every corner of Italian cuisine: from fresh and dry pasta to gnocchi and risotto to game and shellfish, all of which Lidia transforms into exceptional Italian dishes. But that is only the beginning. There are Italian soups to savor, like hearty minestre, bread-enriched zuppe, and the light and flavorful brodi. Polenta's delicious versatility is revealed through Polenta, Gorgonzola, and Savoy Cabbage Torte and White Creamy Polenta with Fresh Plums.

And Lidia's luscious dolci, or desserts, invite your indulgence with Sweet Crepes with Chocolate Walnut Filling, Blueberry-Apricot Frangipane Tart, and Soft Ice Cream with Hazelnuts.

Lidia attributes her passion and appreciation for Italian food to her family. Lidia's Italian Table is filled with stories of learning to make Easter bread with her Grandma Rosa in the town's communal oven; touching and smelling her way through the food markets of Trieste with her great-aunt Zia Nina; fishing for calamari with her uncle Zio Milio; and collecting briny mussels and sea urchins along the Istrian coastline with her cousins.

This gastronomic adventure is more than just a cookbook: It is an exploration into the heart of Italian cuisine.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent set of recipes for people who love to cook!.......2007-02-17

Cooking is one of my favorite passtimes, but I love recipes that can be easily manipulated and turn out well on the first try. Lidia's show on public television has had me hooked for several months now and I have been itching to get my hands on her books. I purchased this one for the gnocchi recipe, among others, and I have not been disappointed. Her recipes come with clear directions and great explanations of her choices throughout! I am vegetarian and have been tremendously pleased that most of her recipes have vegetarian directions as a starting base, making it easy for me to enjoy this book for my own family table. I highly reccommend this book for anyone who wants to know more about fabulous Italian cooking!

this book is a little too "involved". I come from a big italian family, first generation here. The recipies are incredible, but a little impractical for every day. Try Lidia's Italian American Kitchen, that book is much better.

It's been a long time since PSE has shown the original series which this is the companion too. It was fun going through the book and remembering watching Lidia prepare them. Very interesting reading also.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Food.......2005-10-27

Really good cook book. It is possible to find the ingredients needed easily, a real bonus for days when you cannot be making repeated trips to various supermarkets in search of an elusive and expensive key ingredient. I've made lots of food from this and it has always been good. It was especially helpful when I was newly married and had to think of cooking several meals. The hole in the wall chicken and tortellini with cream were really good as was the recipe for Pastistio.

Fabulous cookbook. Recipes are preceded by info on where the recipe came from, suitable variations, the enjoyability of the making and eating of the dish, and ideas on what to pair with it for a satisfying meal. Many of the introductions are sheer poetry, making you want to try almost every dish. The chicken paprika and german meatballs are family favorites now - EXCELLENT recipes. If you enjoy cooking, you MUST add this book to your collection. It's one of the most treasured in ours, and we have, literally, hundreds. You'll not be disappointed with this book!

The story of laundry day, seen though the colorful ephemera of the past! Using over 560 color photos, this engaging book illustrates a host of laundry products--from soaps, starches, and dyes to detergents, bleaches, and softeners--as well as the colorful packaging and advertising used to sell them. Included are store displays, signs, posters, trade cards, postcards, calendars, tin containers, boxes, and more, many beautifully designed and decorated. Some ads date from eras when it was common to depict laundry workers as stereotypes. Although considered inappropriate today, they are among the most highly collectible for their visual documentation of social history. Whether appreciated as social commentary or as fabulous country store decorating, the many items shown here offer a fascinating look at "those low down, Monday morning laundry blues." 5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2001-03-17

I own the Great American Quilts books starting from 1987. They are among my most treasured books. I love these books because they include quilts from all over the country and from quilters of all different degrees of experience. My favorite part is seeing the photograph of the actual quilter (or quilters) and reading the history as to how they got involved in quilt making or what was the inspiration for their quilt or the history of the quilt's making. The photographs of the quilts are beautifully taken and color rich. Also included are the patterns for most of the quilts including the templates and fabric requirements. What could be more enjoyable than owning a book that captures the history and advances of quilt making? Truly a must have.

                5 out of 5 stars wonderful book!.......2000-04-26

This book has a wonderful variety of patterns, both applique and patchwork, beginners and advanced quilters both will find patterns to their skill level. I also like the little tips scattered throughout the book, like working with little half triangle squares, making yo-yos. Some of the instructions also come with fancy quilting patterns, which I find very helpful. I also enjoy the little articles about the quiltmakers and their inspiration for making that particular quilt. I also find myself just looking through this book when I need to be inspired to finish another project!

                5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2000-03-29

This book has lots of inspiring quilts! From cozy country to sweet pastels to jazzy modern quilts, they all are great! I find I am picking up the book when I have a free moment or two just to browse, I seem to learn something new each time, or get a new idea to try on my next quilt project. I like that they feature a variety of styles, applique and patchwork, and offer tips on sewing curves and have some feathered quilting designs. I cant think of how they could make this any better!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory text ..........2001-10-13

This is truly a 'quick start' and gets the user up and running fast. Unlike other instruction manuals I have used, this text focuses on commands that move you quickly into drawing and doesn't emphasize commands that are unnecessary to the basic process. It's true it doesn't have many of those refinements included in other books, but for the beginner who likes to see results quickly, this method is far superior to the more cumbersome approach sometimes taken by other authors. The student can provide themselves with the basic tools needed to draw with AutoCAD easily, and the instructor can then introduce more complex and in-depth exercises to refine their skills. I have used this book as a text for an introductory course since it was first published, and my students like it as much as I do.

                    Book Description

Dorothy Heathcote is the most public drama-teaching figure in the world. She has taught classes of children in five continents. The numbers must run into millions. In addition, innumerable teachers have watched her teach in person or on video and television.

How did someone who left elementary school at 14 become a world authority? Heathcote has now asked Gavin Bolton, who has worked extensively - and co-authored several books with her to write that story. Dr. Bolton describes Dorothy Heathcote's upbringing, her work as a mill girl, her theater training, her unprecedented appointment to Durham and Newcastle Universities and her extraordinary rise to fame. He examines the basis for her genius and shows how being a wife and mother contributed to her work.
