Good Recipes and a Story That's a Touch Confusing.......2005-06-30
This seems to be the start of a new trend in publishing. I don't know if you'd call this a cookbook, a novel, an autobiography, or maybe even history. I've now seen mysteries, novels, and memoirs written with this concept.
In the book part of this work, the stories follow the courses in a meal: Appetizers, First Courses, Second Courses, Eggs, etc. The stories that go in each of these chapters are at best loosely connected to each other. Each stands on its own and presents a short succinct story.
Likewise I don't see much connection between the recipes and the stories they accompany. What, for instance, does visiting with her mother while her father retreated into his room 'resting' have to do with 'Cream of Peas," the recipe that is next to it.
I think that in truth the recipes somehow serve as a marker of the time. She cooked the Cream of Peas that night or something like that.
The recipes I would call non-traditional Jewish Italian. Some of them, Pork Chops with Oranges are really good and very simple to make. The stories have become classics in Italy. They are quite dependent on the culture of the time to make a lot of sense. There is some attempt on the part of the translators to add information on her culture, but being an American male, it's difficult to understand the viewpoint of an Italian female of thirty years ago.

It is slow, but give it a chance..........2005-12-21
Bitter Rivals is the follow up to Down to Earth the first Wonder Woman volume written by Greg Rucka. Reading Down to Earth is not mandatory to understand this volume, but it helps a LOT. As Bitter Rivals starts we find Wonder Woman under attack from multiple fronts.
Wonder Woman has come under attack by the Silver Swan, she is being attacked in the press and she finds a murder at her doorstep. She has made a powerful enemy who is aranging the pieces on the board against her, even if, as we see with Dr Psycho, they are not always entirely controlable. Her enemy does come across as a female Lex Luthor, which struck me as rather peculiar, but I was able to move past it.
Meanwhile, as they say, things are not at all well in the world of the gods as Paradise Island has suffered a cataclysmic event and a newly freed Circe helps resurect an ancient threat.
Rucka builds his story slowly, very slowly. He first shows us Wonder Woman in her element, as more than just a superhero, but also a crusader and an ambasador. We get to see the forces that gather against her build and then strike, and we see Wonder Woman fight back and call on her allies for assistance. Rucka is pushing Diana towards a breaking point we will see later in the build up to Infinite Crisis and IC itself. Rucka s run on Wonder Woman is he road to IC.
Bitter Rivals is a middle chapter in his Wonder Woman saga and thats why it has some issues standing on its own. Its why I cannot give it five stars. It is great, but should be read as a part of the greater whole.

Good Gift Book for Young Guys First Learning to Cook .......2007-03-20
Many young men mainly subsist on cold cereal, take-out pizza, and macaroni and cheese meals they make from a box. How will they ever develop past using the microwave for heating frozen foods? Rachael Ray's small book, 30 30-Minute Meals "Guy Food" can help.
If you already own Rachael Ray's 30-minute meals cookbooks, realize that these meals are reprints from those volumes.
If you are concerned about keeping down your weight, these meals aren't the best. You'll need to substitute lower-calorie versions of some of the ingredients.
But true to Rachael Ray's roots, the choices of spices and the ease of preparation are both very good.
Rachael seems to be assuming that the male chef hasn't spent much time in the kitchen before. The recommendations are unusually simple to prepare. But when I was 20, this small book would have been just about perfect for my skill and confidence level in the kitchen.
Here are some of my favorites in the book:
Outside-in bacon cheeseburgers (I hate the mess that cheese makes when it's on top!)
Manly Manny's chili
Blackened chicken pizza
Asparagus with orange and sesame
Spinach pasta with asparagus, artichoke, and arugula
Veal scaloppini with wine, mushrooms, and green olives
Tenderloin steaks with gorgonzola
Sirloin Bourguignonne burgers
John's haddock with bacon, onions, and tomatoes
Steak au poivre
Cubano burgers with mango-black bean salsa
Grilled halibut tacos with guacamole sauce
Tuna steak au poivre on white beans with peppers
Marinated grilled flank steak
Sweet 'n spicy chicken curry in a hurry
Delmonico steaks with balsamic onions and steak sauce
Chorizo and shrimp quesadillas with smoky guacamole
Balsamic pork tenderloins
Roasted ratatouille vegetables
As you can see, most young men will probably want to pick one or two items a week to prepare . . . perhaps for an eat-in date or for having the guys over to watch a game. The food is heartier than most would want to eat every day.
If this book is a success for you, I suggest that you graduate next to Rachael Ray 2, 4, 6, 8. That cookbook will allow you to have more variety and learn how to entertain small groups.
My guy loves it, and so does my brother-in-law.......2007-02-08
My husband got this book from his sister for Christmas and he loves it. He has cooked several of the dishes and they have all been great! If it means he will cook and I don't have to, I love it. My brother-in-law loved the blackened chicken pizza so much I am getting him the book for his birthday. The pecan crusted chicken was delicious and so were the rosemary potatoes. I'll admit when I first read it, it didn't fit my idea of guy food but like I said, my guy loves it. Go Rachael!
Guy Foods: Rachael Ray.......2006-11-07
The inside out burgers are the best, my boyfriend and I love them.
Not this Guy.......2006-09-05
Who did she interview to think this is what guy's like to eat? Every recepie in here is designed for women to make sure they can collect their husbands life insurance checks from heart attacks, and still be young enough to enjoy them. Healthy? I don't think so. If you really think her meals are healthy, look how much weight she has gained over the past couple years. Every meal she uses a lot of olive oil, butter, and salty additives. then writing a recepie for "Hamburger Salad" Basically garden greens from a bag, and a couple fried hamburger patties placed on top of the greens, with cheese on it. Oh my...Quick, easy and "Healthy" meals guys like to eat. Yummo? I don't think so.
For the college kids in your family!.......2006-07-09
This is THE cookbook for those college kids or ones just out on their own. My newphew calls home, from the store, on how to make dinner. This book will lower your cell phone bill. The food is good, easy and healthy for them.

Great book.......2002-10-28
This is a great book to buy for the holidays. I am buying one for my sister in law and my mom, too. It will help us save money on gifts, since homemade is best. Easy to follow and fun!
Fun and Informative!.......2002-10-08
This book was written for someone like me! Because I have very little in-kitchen experience, even cookbooks intimidate me, since they tend to assume at least some prior knowledge of cooking and baking. Finally, I have encountered a cookbook author who started at the beginning and who explained the basics in a clear and straightforward way! She then went on to spell out fun and interesting recipes that even I could follow! I'm so excited to be able to give gifts that take time and energy, that are clearly made and given with love, and that also look and taste impressive! -- Home-spun and polished at the same time! I am going to give this book as a pre-Christmas gift, so that my friends will be able to actually use it at Christmastime! I'm thrilled with it!
Fun and Easy to do with Kids!.......2002-10-06
I am a stay-at-home mom, and I home-school my two kids, who are 8 and 11. Since their academic work only takes up the mornings, in the afternoons we go on adventures or do projects at home. My 11 year old's soccer team was holding a bake sale, and we decided to do something a little more exciting than our usual chocolate chip cookies. We had so much fun making the fortune cookies in Gifts from the Kitchen for Dummies that we have decided to do one recipe a week, going straight through the book. My kids had a lot of fun making up fortunes (although I had to nix a few of their more objectionable ones!) and my daughter was the first to figure out how to fold the cookies properly. This book is great for anyone who wants to have fun making beautiful things in the kitchen without going to study at the Cordon Bleu! My kids can't wait to do the chapter on chocolate!
Perfect Timing!.......2002-10-05
This book couldn't have come out at a more perfect time! Recently retired, I've been enjoying spending time in the kitchen, but have gotten bored with regular cooking and baking, so I was delighted by the opportunity to try a new spin on kitchen projects. And this book measures up! It's a cross between cooking and the arts and crafts I did as a kid, and I'm having a great time! It's fun to read, and fun to do!

Anthony Holden doesn't pull any punches in his choice of biographical subjects. Having already taken on the Prince of Wales, Laurence Olivier, and Tchaikovsky, this time Holden has gone for no less than the Bard himself. Dismissing claims that there is nothing left to say about the poet and playwright, Holden's bold study argues that, on the contrary, the archives are rich with traces of Shakespeare as husband, father, actor, dramatist, poet, and Stratford lad made good. Holden also argues that "if each generation recreates Shakespeare in its own image," then we need a new version for the 21st century. He obliges with a racy, incident-packed account of the glovemaker's son who rose to subsequent immortality via the stage of Elizabethan London. In addition to poring over the established evidence, Holden makes some controversial but intriguing claims. Not only was Shakespeare a covert Catholic who spent his so-called lost years as a budding actor in Catholic households in Lancashire under the name of "Shakeshafte" but he also suffered from sexually transmitted diseases, experienced a nervous breakdown, fathered an illegitimate son via his middle-aged landlady, and sailed close to the political wind with what Holden sees as his residual Catholic and "republican instincts." It's all very entertaining--if at times far out on its own interpretative limb--and a lively and refreshing approach to the Bard as an Elizabethan man behaving badly. William Shakespeare: The Man Behind the Genius may not be for all time, but it resonates richly with our times. --Jerry Brotton
Customer Reviews:
Enlightening New Shakespeare Biography.......2004-07-11
Anthony Holden's biography of William Shakespeare is comprehensive and full of new and interesting information. Holden provides the best explaination, based on evidence, I have ever seen about what Shakespeare was doing during the "Lost Years" and how he came to be in London. I learned many new things from this book, and I am already well versed in Shakespeare.
excellent - should be on every English student's shelf.......2003-03-26
Somewhat to my surprise, this is a first-rate popular biography of a genius about whom we know practically nothing. Not that this has stopped any number of amateur sleuths from the Baconians to Eric Sams from trying to find clues in the poems and plays. Holden's is by far the liveliest and most readable. He doesn't make the mistake Anthony Burgess did of spraying his own personality over Shakespeare in the usual tom-cat fashion; nor is he bonkers, excessively academic or portentous. If you want to discover as much as can be known or surmised about the Bard, especially the early years, then Holden's book is fascinating. His thesis that the SHakespeares all closet Catholics, and that the young WS was sent as a teenager to recusant Lancashire to teach at Sir Thomas Hesketh's house as good an explanation as any of how the "rude groom" acquired polish and knowledge of how aristocratic families lived. His gloss on his marriage, the untimely death of his son Hamnett and his growing interest in his daughters all substantiated by apt quotations.
A wonderful piece of detective-work. Alongside Joanthan Bates's The Genius of Shakespeare it's a great new addition to the modern enthusiast's library.
Painful Reading.......2002-05-28
I found the book to be extremely hard to get through, wordy and boring. The entire book focuses on direct quotations from all of Shakespeare's works with little focus as to why the quotations were included in the text. The book gives the reader little of his personal life, personality, or political views, but focuses only on hundreds of people that he knew and met throughout the years giving detailed explanations of names, and their backgrounds. I found the book to be very boring, with little content on Shakespeare as a person; the book featured only comments on his hundreds of works. If you are EXTREMELY well versed with Shakespeare's works, this is a good pick for you. If you have some to little knowledge, pick something else. For the student who needs interesting information on him as a person, choose another book. I found it to be dry, repetative and only in depth on quotations from thousands of plays.
One word more.......2000-10-23
Some of the other reviews incite me to add yet a few more words. Holden does NOT blur fact and fiction. He consistently lables speculation and inference, identifies sources, outlines opposing views, gives reasons for his choices, and qualifies his conclusions. His reading of the plays, while brief, reaches deeply into the heart of Shakespeare's works. This is a responsible and valuable book.
The Essential Biography.......2000-10-23
This is the essential preface to any first reading of the collected works of Shakespeare. It's the perfect introduction for the student -- and a rich summing up for an experienced reader or theater person. Despite Holden's previous oeuvre of front-table bookstore products about Prince Charles, Princess Di, Olivier, the Oscars, etc., this is a serious (though very readible) biography, which makes full use of a vast resource of scholarship. Tossing -- or, rather, kicking -- aside any nonsense about the plays and poems being the work of some mystery author, Holden presents Shakespeare's chronology with clarity, rich color and carefully examined detail. He relates the plays to what is known or can be reasonable inferred about the succeeding periods of Shakespeare's life and the developing stages of his thought. He does not idealize or fantasize. And he places the works in the context of the theatrical history of the period. The reader comes away enriched with a profound feeling for the qualities that Shakespeare's admirers so value. The plays become more accessible in the process, as does Shakespeare scholarship. A very valuable book.
