The Great Pint-Pulling Olympiad: A Mostly Irish Farce
ASIN: 1564781453 |
Book Description
Proving that the spirits of James Joyce, Flann O'Brien, and Samuel Beckett still flow in the veins of at least one Irish writer, Roger Boylan has composed a novel filled with hilarity and doom about the inhabitants of the Irish town of Killoyle: Milo Rogers, a headwaiter and would-be poet with a bit of a drinking problem and a bit of a sexual one; Kathy Hickman, a writer for the woman's fashion magazine Glam, as well as a former pin-up girl; Wolfetone Grey, who reads books only by or about God, and who also makes anonymous phone calls throughout the town in order to make people believe, among other things, that they have just won the lottery; and a host of other peculiar folks, all suffering from and tortured by problems with God, sex, the drink, and of course Ireland.
Accompanying all of this is a nameless figure who bursts on the scene in the form of acerbic, opinionated, hilarious footnotes that rudely comment upon the characters and numerous other subjects.
Killoyle wildly celebrates the great Irish tradition of laughter amid despair and tears.
Customer Reviews:
An Irish Nabokov.......2002-03-26
Killoyle is a book to be savored -- if you try to rush through it, I don't think you'll enjoy it. Roger Boylan's style demands a thoughtful, reflective pace of reading.
I think of Boylan as an Irish Nabokov. Like Nabokov, he is a virtuoso of language who apparently writes for the pure pleasure of doing so. And what fun he seems to have! His unpredictable, spontaneous flashes of merriment keep the reader entertained throughout.
I found the uniquely Irish charm of Killoyle so delightful that I have gone on an Irish literature binge since reading it: Joyce, Beckett, and Flann O'Brien. I can't thank Roger Boylan enough!
oh, the footnotes!.......2000-11-13
Any book subtitled "An Irish Farce" is worth a thorough reading, and Killoyle was no disappointment. The story alternates between despair and hilarity - this is Ireland, after all - as it follows the lives of the inhabitants of Killoyle. Among many other folks, there is the aging editor of a glamour magazine, a waiter who is something of a poet, and the resident nutcase who likes making prank phone calls as much as he likes books by or about God. Of course, being a novel about Ireland, there are the requisite problems: drinking, sex, God, and Ireland itself.
The real genius of the novel is the footnotes, including gems like this one: "This round-buying will be the death of the Irish nation, you mark my words. Once I was conned into buying eleven rounds in the space of a single wet lunch, with no one else in the bar!" The persona of the footnotes provides comic relief, criticism, rude comments, and seemingly random filler throughout the text. However, from driving directions to snappy comebacks, the footnotes provide, as they should, the details that flesh out the story.
Besides being just plain fun to read, Killoyle is worth a look because Boylan rose to the challenge of doing something 'new' with the novel. I applaud him and his witty footnotes, and I highly recommend Killoyle if you are in the mood for a good yarn.
no title.......2000-08-03
Brava, Mr. Boylan! It has been a long time since I read a book that made me laugh out loud, not just a titter here and there but frequent and hearty chuckles, chortles, and out and out belly laughs. Even rarer is the book that engages both your chortling mechanism and your mind. Killoyle does both. Slapstick and sophisticated simultaneously.

Kirby's Last Stories of the Challengers of the Unkown.......2005-01-23
DC split Kirby's run on the Challengers of the Unknown between two slimmer than average (hence the smaller price) DC Archives.
The Challengers of the Unkown were a group of adventurers who on the way to a tv show about them are involved in a horrible plane crash. They all survive and dedicate themselves to challenging the unkown, in the belief that they are now living on barrowed time.
EC and Marvel legend Wally Wood and oddly enough Kirby's wife Roz Kirby ink the tales in this volume to great effect. Wood refines and adds polish to Kirby's dynamic pencils.
The stories are on par with what was being done in DC's Mystery and Science Fiction titles of the time with more of an adventure twist.
Of note is the story "Menace of the Invincible Challenger" from Challengers of the Unkown #3. In the story one of the Challengers, Rocky, gains super powers from a space flight ala the Fantastic Four, but three years earlier.
Kirby eventually had to leave DC due to a problem over a comic strip he was producing, going over to Atlas, which would shortly become Marvel (and the rest is history).
Bear in mind that the Challengers of the Unkown primed both the pump for DC's and Marvel's silver age.
A good volume of seldom or never reprinted silver age stories.

from the back cover of the December 1991 Bantam Spectra paperback edition
cover art by Paul Swendsen
What would have happened if history had been different: if the major events that shaped our times had occurred in a different way - or not at all? In this thought-provoking volume (Alternate Wars), eleven outstanding science fiction writers and one legendary statesman alter the past in order to better see the present. From a Trojan War in which Helen surrenders, to a Civil War fought with robots, from a World War I in which Teddy Roosevelt tries to recapture the glory of San Juan Hill, to a World War II in which the race is not for atomic weapons but for orbital rockets, these bold excursions in time depict bizarre new worlds - oddly familiar, disturbingly different - a rare glimpse of WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN.

If.......2002-03-24
Third in a volume of great alternative histories, Volume III, Alternate Wars, is an anthology of mediocre, poor, good, and great stories. Isn't every anthology?
And Wild For to Hold is pretty good, describing history if Anne Boleyn hadn't been around to be divorced, and the religious strife begun in England from the Act of Supremacy. But the story focuses more on an abducted Anne in the future, using all of the wiles of the historical Anne to take control of her new situation. It is a unique approach in alternative histories- what if the historical individual acted as she did historically, but in a future time?
Tundra Moss focuses on an Alaskan communications station and what would have happened if President Roosevelt had gotten sick and not given his "Day of Infamy" speech, leading to America working only on the Japanese War first and waiting to get involved in Europe. When Free Men Shall Stand is surprisingly poorly written, considering it's Poul Anderson, and describes an America with the Louisiana Territory still permanently under French control, and America at war with the great French power. It's simply very difficult to follow.
Arms and the Woman is the first excellent story in this collection, and not surprisingly, coming from James Morrow, who wrote another great story, Abe Lincoln at McDonalds, in Volume II of this collection. Here he describes what might have happened if Helen had stepped outside Troy and realized this war was being fought over her, with thousands of men dying for her. This is an interesting story because it stretches very far back into our history- further than all other stories in this collection to date- to a time that is shrouded in myth. We believe that Homer wrote history, but it is a history from a time when men understood that myth was equal with history. It deals with questions that influence so much of our lives because they occurred so early in the time stream. Morrow's writing style is also very enjoyable, tongue-in-cheek, with many humorous asides, down to the style of prophylactic.
I generally enjoy Turtledove, and Ready for the Fatherland was well written as usual, but it was simply too depressing. What if Hitler was killed by one of his generals during the Soviet campaign, causing Germany to pull back and sue for peace, controlling most of Continental Europe, with the result that England and America had to deal with both the Soviets and the Nazis for the next forty years plus? The actions of England in response are just too sad.
If you're looking for excellent literature, where the characters and setting come alive before you, read The Tomb. Here Constantine takes on the sign of the cross as his standard, but fails in his attack on Maxentius. Unfortunately, the author doesn't have a firm grasp on history, as he posits this would lead to the disappearance of Christianity. This shows no understanding of the strength of Christianity in the East, completely independent of the vagaries of the Empire, continuing under Islam and under the Persian Empire. In truth, the majority of Christians lived East of Antioch for the first 1000 years as Nestorians, with over a million spread throughout Asia- it was a predominantly Asian religion. And just as it grew by leaps and bounds under intense Roman persecution, it would not have needed Roman support to survive in the West.
Of anything Malzberg has written in this collection, Turpentine was the best. But that's not saying much. What if a bunch of college kids had gotten a hold of a nuclear reactor and threatened to blow up a school here in America, during the Johnson administration? It doesn't really have a historical divergence, or present much contact with reality, and Malzberg uses a confusing writing style without quote marks. Still, it was interesting to contemplate the possibilities.
Goddard's People was another great work, in which the space race occurs earlier between Germany and America during WWII- based on actual evidence we have of German work on rockets and the Father of Modern Rocketry, Robert Goddard. Manassas, Again could be easily removed from this collection- this despite it being written by one of the editors. What if there is a war between robots and humans? It doesn't really relate to any historical divergence. Benford adds in that it is the early 1800's, war has been abolished, and the Roman Empire is still around, but America is free- but that is one paragraph, and you get no sense at all of how that relates to this robot war.
Likewise The Number of the Sand was a substandard work. It looks at quantum possibilities, which simply get overused these days in science fiction. What are all the different scenarios for Hannibal's life? The upside of this work is it made me realize how little I knew about his campaigns and I had to look up more to read about the events of the Carthaginian Empire. Sadly, I didn't even know there was one. Now, because of this story, I do.
If Lee Had Not Won the Battle of Gettysburg is a wonderful story by Sir Winston Churchill, PM of England, and it also encouraged me to read up more on the events of Gettysburg. It imagines what *our* reality might be like from the perspective of an alternate future, while providing the details of the other reality. Not only a great PM, but a great author too.
If Theodore Roosevelt had been able to get involved in WWI, we have Over There. It is a great work to end this collection on, as it sees how war has changed. Rather than a specific historical figure, it uses Roosevelt as the type and looks at how a 19th century warrior might fare in the 20th.
Sometimes you rediscover things........1998-12-06
When I read Feigenbaum's number & then Beggars in Spain both by Nancy Kress I knew I had discovered a new author (for me) that I was going to love. However one of the first science fiction stories I read was some story that I thought was written by some male author in the 50's about Elizabethan England. I recently discovered that that story was "And Wild for to Hold" by Nancy Kress and yes it was first in this anthology. It is strange I'd forget the title & author, but remember the point of the story. Also I recently "discovered" that I liked Allen Steele, but yup you guessed I read & liked his Goddard's people in this years ago. (Although I sort of remembered him) Kress is the real one that got me since ,until recently, I thought for sure "Feigenbaum Number" in thirteenth Year's Best sf. I hope you are tolerant about me talking about the book that way, but to tell you about the stories themselves the 2 I mentioned are good although Steele's is somewhat dry if you don't like history the way I do. Churchhill's (Yes Churchhill the Prime Minister you didn't know he wrote science fiction?) was interesting in being pro-Southern when it comes to the Civil War.

review for How to Break an Egg.......2007-08-13
I've been cooking for more years than I like to count, but this book gave me a lot of tips I never came across before, plus a handy color photographic section on de-shelling lobsters and shrimp and pitting various fruits. However, the tip on shelling hard boiled eggs, one of my cross-eyes bears, didn't work for me. For any home cook, though, this is wonderful recreational, as well as useful, reading.
Helpful for experienced cooks and new ones too!.......2007-01-10
I love to pick this book up and just read a few pages (I always learn something!) It has also helped me several times when I had a question about how to keep something fresh or how I can substitute ingredients. I gave it to one of my best friends for Christmas and she was thrilled. I have to admit that I am a great fan of Fine Cooking magazine and cookbooks.
A Must Have.......2006-07-07
This is a must have book for even a professional chef / cook. It is filled with all kinds of great tips that I doubt even a master chef knows.
It's just a great book.......2006-03-24
This book is great. I've learned so many things just from this book. This book contains tips and things you'd learn from like your grandmother or mother, things I wasn't taught. It has helped me improve my skills in the kitchen and I've only had this book for a short while!
It gets parked in the kitchen nexts to my "culinary bible" The Food Lover's Companion, which is a special section in my house. Not many books have made it it there, so far theres only three total.
Informative.......2006-03-02
Book is extremely informative as to methods of cooking and tips to prepare food properly

Book Description
There is a marrying of ideas, process, and action in Raku that creates some of the most exciting forms of contemporary clay art. Raku: Investigations into Fire is a comprehensive study of this popular ceramic process. Its history is traced from its earliest beginnings in Japanese ritual to current preoccupations dealing with the relationship of clay, artist, and fire. The history of Raku provides a framework for understanding the most recent developments in materials and technology, while an analysis of design illuminates the ways in which new ideas are developed. There is also an extensive examination of the methods of generating the rich and seductive surfaces, as well as the most recent innovations in technology and process-all beautifully illustrated with 200 fine color photographs. This is an ideal book for both the beginner and the experienced practitioner.
Customer Reviews:
A "Must have" book.......2000-05-10
This book is well written by someone who obviously know their subject well. Easy to read and well illustrated. The book takes the reader on a journey from the beginng of the Raku process in Japan right through to the modern adaptions of the western world. The many examples shown are by some well known and some not so well known exponents of this exciting method of firing ceramics. The author gives recipes and showns some results of different ways of reduction.
The fantastic colour photographs alone are worth the price of the book. I would recommend this to every teacher of ceramics and a must have for every student.
Book Description
Handmade Culture is the first comprehensive and cohesive study in any language to examine Raku, one of Japan's most famous arts and a pottery technique practiced around the world. More than a history of ceramics, this innovative work considers four centuries of cultural invention and reinvention during times of both political stasis and socioeconomic upheaval. It combines scholarly erudition with an accessible story through its lively and lucid prose and its generous illustrations. The author's own experiences as the son of a professional potter and a historian inform his unique interdisciplinary approach, manifested particularly in his sensitivity to both technical ceramic issues and theoretical historical concerns.
The story of Raku begins in the late sixteenth century with the alleged meeting between Sen no Rikyû, Japan's most famous tea practitioner, and Chôjirô, a tilemaker and potter who may have been part of the larger community of Chinese artisans responsible for bringing the fundamentals of the Raku technique to Japan. (In the seventeenth century, Chôjirô's workshop would emerge as the most influential producer of Raku ceramics.) By foregrounding the web of interactions between potters, tea practitioners, merchants, warriors, and eventually modernizing intellectuals, the present volume tracks broader developments in the culture of early modern Japan. The iemoto organizational system, for example, which came to dominate many art and performance professions in the eighteenth century, is explored through a series of letters and other exchanges between Sen tea masters and Raku potters. The publishing boom of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries serves as background for an analysis of a secret manual of Raku production printed in Osaka and distributed across the archipelago. The role of elite warrior patronage of tea and ceramics at the end of the Tokugawa and the profound implications of the collapse of this patronage with the Meiji Restoration of 1868 also come into focus. The work concludes by examining the repercussions of modernity, particularly in the multiple reconfigurations of tea and ceramics in early art exhibitions, art historical writings, and nationalistic publications on Japanese culture.
Handmade Culture makes ample use of archaeological evidence, heirloom ceramics, tea diaries, letters, woodblock prints, and gazetteers and other publications to narrate the compelling history of Raku, a fresh approach that sheds light not only on an important traditional art from Japan, but on the study of cultural history itself.
Book Description
This international #1 best seller on raku ceramics is a richly photographed, accessible, all-in-one compendium of knowledge and inspiration for the contemporary raku potter. In addition to vividly providing important exposure to kiln construction and glaze reduction techniques the pages are visually loaded with the imaginative work and resourcefulness of today's raku artists.
Customer Reviews:
A Great PLace to Start in Raku.......2003-02-18
I found this book very clear with the detailed information on building kilns invaluable. The author has also included great information in forming raku bodies and glazes.
One of the Raku Bibles.......2002-10-01
This is one of the Bibles of the Raku art world. Piepenburg gives a great introduction into the history of Raku, where it originated, the Raku families, and the ties to the Japanese Tea Ceremony. Sprinkled throughout the book are excellent examples of Raku artwork from a variety of artists. A wide variety of shapes, forms, glazes, and techniques are all detailed and described. There is also a nice collection of glaze recipes along with application methods and testing techniques. There is a section that talks about Raku kilns and burners and some basic information on how to build them. Finally there is an introduction into the firing and post-firing techniques that are used in Raku. Overall it is a very nice introduction to Raku with a very nice gallery of pieces to inspire you to create your own works of art.
King of Raku.......2001-06-09
Robert Piepenburg is one of the leading Raku artists in our time. I have been doing pottery for 20 years and this book has helped me hone my pieces to as near perfection as we can get. The helpful insights from type of clay, glazes, firing techniques and even kiln building are a step by step aide in creating and developing your own techniques--with borrowing a little from Piepenburg and others you can claim it as your own. Luckily the beauty of Raku is that you can follow anothers techniqes step by step and still come out with a totally different look. The main idea is to help develop the technique that is right to get the results you are seeking for the glazes you are using.
excellant veiw of raku.......1999-08-02
robert take you completely through the process leaving you wanting to go out and explore the raku process.

Customer Reviews:
Joanna Rotte has written an brilliant book........2001-01-07
At first, you could be not attracted by this book to give you an explanation of Stella Adler's Techniques of Acting. Because Joanna Rotte "seems" to be an external person from Adler's Techniques. You would be wrong. It' s not the case. Joanna Rotte has been in touch with Stella Adler for 3 years as a student, then as an actress. Therefore, she has a great understanding of Adler's Techniques. But, the most important, she has been able to organize this knowledge in a book which is CLEAR, complete, precise. If you' re interested by Adler' s Techniques of Acting, get it.
