    Book Description

"The witch," the crowd murmured, as they parted before me.

Dirty unwashed humans. I wrinkled my nose and pressed my sleeping harling closer to my chest. I loathed bringing my son into the presence of the filthy things, but when duty is concerned Zen sets aside all else. Even family. We had arrived three months ago in this overcrowded refugee camp on the high plains of northern Megalithica, after Tigron Pellaz-har-Aralis, lord of the powerful region of Almagabra, had chosen my chesnari to be his ambassador to the savages. Zen had taken to the task with an enthusiasm that I didn't understand. When I'd dropped our son's pearl, Zen had shown an appropriate amount of excitement. But as the harling continued to develop within the protective membrane, Zen had found a hundred excuses to be elsewhere which, I'm sure, in his eyes he considered quite legitimate.

The familiar pattern of Zen's thoughts brushed away my irritation. The crowd opened, and I saw him mediating a dispute between two loud humans. He sat with his chin in his hand. His long white hair spilled over his shoulder into his lap. His red tunic was spotted with fresh ink stains. He scratched his nose idly. When his aide Rika nudged his shoulder, Zen looked up and saw me. His smile warmed my thoughts.

I moved forward. The dimwitted human closest to me sputtered nonsense as I passed. He feared me. They all did. With good reason. My first week in the camp, I had caught a thief in my tent and hung his disemboweled body in front of my home for three days to serve as a warning to others. If I had to keep Zen's household and raise our harling here, I refused to sacrifice my family's safety.

    4 out of 5 stars Breath Shared.......2006-12-06

Yes, this is another book written within the Wraeththu mythos, by Victoria Copus, edited by Storm Constantine. The storyline of this addition to the canon stands out more than any other, including Storm's, in that it deeply delves into how hara really live day to day, rather than on the drama of their love lives and dark secrets (not that I haven't gotten a lot of inspiration from those). The trilogies tell the stories of primary characters, while this one really hones in on an extremely minor character, it reveals the story of those hara in smaller tribes left to live in the aftermath of the Tigron coming to power, and we see the story of Immanion unfolding in the background of these less political perspectives. Every har narrator I fall in love with, Terzah, no less. He's not likable because of his compassionate nature. Rather, he's very much of the tribes the other books embittered us against, as killers and heartless thugs. Terzah starts out as much, and still retains his warrior nature, but compassion emerges not just in the reader's view of him, but his view of himself. This author really captures the perspective of a parent who retains an emotional detachment from his harlings really well, in that Terzah loves his children, but his warrior spirit prevents him from being caught in their adolescent manipulations. Apart from the fact that he bears a pearl that is natured just like him. Very interesting study of human-hara relations. Where other installments focused on the gender equality and disparity, this one drew on the hara relationship to humans, and the painful fence where young ones choose to become hara, or face a questionable fate as a human. Well done.

    4 out of 5 stars A needed insight on human-wraeththu relations .......2006-03-25

Victoria Copus' contribution to wraeththu mythos is a poignant, psychologically sound insight on the relations between hara and humans. Terzah is the consort of the supervisor of a refugee camp,Zen where human and hara experiment the difficulties and attritions of living togheter as a community. Terzah comes from the fierce tribe of Kheops, and his prejudiced view of humans will be changed after the dramatic death of an human friend, whose children he'll choose to adopt. The description of Zen and Terzah's human/harish family vicissitudes is very interesting, and at times touching. Only fault the introduction of too many characters, bot human and harish, makes following the story a bit difficult. but it's worth it!

5 out of 5 stars fun, and real.......2005-06-29

If you are looking for a Lord of the Rings epic this is probably not the book you are looking for. This is not a great epic this is a story of family and real life, in a mythical world with a race that has evolved from humans. Victoria Copus manages to make characters that could be larger than life seem real and her story is not necessarily about the great heros but the every day ones that live all around us. Her characters are not following some great destiny or going on a quest they are living in a refugee camp and creating a village. The characters drag you in and make you feel like you are a part of it. I read this before I read the Wraethlu saga and was the reason I decided to try it so you do not need to have read it to enjoy this foray in the world. There are terms that may be confusing but for the most part are self explanatory. I enjoyed this so much that I could not put it down and I have read it about 5 times. It is excellent.

    Book Description

It was just before Summertide, the time when the twin planets, Opal and Quake, would orbit closest to their sun, subjecting both -- but Quake in particular -- to vast tidal forces. And it was to be the most violent Summertide ever, due to the Grand Conjunction of the system's stars and planets, something that happened only every 350,000 years.
Access to the unstable Quake was supposed to be prohibited, but some very insistent travelers were determined to make the trip. Professor Darya Lang, who had made a career studying artifacts left by the long-vanished aliens called the Builders, had a hunch that during this unusal Summertide she might find the Builders themselves. Louis Nenda and the Cecropian Atvar H'sial had their own interests in Quake, and would do anything to get there. And Councilor Julius Graves was hunting murderers -- if they were hiding on Quake, he needed no one's permission to search for them.
Planetary Administrators Hans Rebka and Max Perry had no choice but to go to Quake themselves -- risking their lives to protect the others -- and to learn, just maybe, the secret of Summertide and the Builders . . .
"A well-made puzzle story in the manner of Arthur C. Clarke's Rama books." -- The New York Times

3 out of 5 stars Middling at best.......2004-05-25

I just finished reading all four books in this series. I read them mostly because of the ideas that were presented, knowing pretty clearly after the first book that character depth and presentation isn't the author's strong point.

Good: The artifacts are interesting and unique, and present a great backdrop of the story that Sheffield is telling. He also has a great description of the aliens and presents them interestingly enough.

Bad: It was quite hard to care about these characters. They seemed like caricatures more than people, and they didnt seem real to me...they were mostly stereotypical, especially the characters presnted in the last two books. These people are in the middle of events of epic proportions on a galactic scale, but they repeatedly acted with only their own interests in mind. Which brings me to my main gripe...The plot focused only on the charactures, and you never got a sense that the rest of the galactic arm cared about what was going on. I cant help but compare books like this to Hyperion and its sequels, and these books pale in comparison. I felt like I was reading a Piers Anthony space epic. Decent fun, not a bad read, but could have been so much better. And the secret to the Builders was cool, I must admit.

    1 out of 5 stars not good.......2000-02-24

The synopsis: Evil space squid threatens sexy, two-dimensional human female. Male hero saves her and they hook up. I'm not kidding.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting characters brighten hunt for alien secrets.......1997-10-25

SUMMERTIDE is the first novel of Sheffield's Heritage Universe series. Though a complete story in itself, it is a teaser for the later and better books. Sheffield peppers his universe with a series of Builder artifacts, remanents of a long vanished alien race. The surviving sentient races, particularly humans and the insectoid Cecropians, seek to discover the secrets of the Builders.

An interesting collection of characters independently come to the conclusion that some of those secrets may be unlocked during Summertide, a time of violent seismic disturbances on the planet Quake caused by a rare alignment of planets. There's Darya Lang, the leading, but naive, human authority on Builder artifacts. Julian/Steven Graves, elite Alliance counciler and possessor of two personalities and two brains. He's in pursuit of two teenage girls charged with genocide. There's the ruthless Cecropian, Atvar H'sial, sometime ally of Louis Nenda, a shady, equally ruthless human, and Kallik, Nenda's smart but cong

4 out of 5 stars A fun, captivating, and suspensful classic scifi adventure........1997-09-11

This story explores a detailed universe that you only get a taste of in this first of four books. Each chapter makes you yearn for the discoveries to come in the next, and the book as a whole makes you eager to learn about the rest of the 'mysterious artifacts'. The characters are fairly well developed with a hint of romantic interest here and there. The story centers on the action and a relentless countdown to the event the book is named after; "Summertide". I haven't had a book stay on my mind between readings like this in a while. I'm ordering the next three books so I can continue with the characters and artifacts introduced in this book as soon as possible. It was a fun escape into a well developed future universe.

I've not used this book as much as I have some of the other Weight Watchers cook books but this one is just as good. If your love to cook Italian food, and want to stay within your points, this one will have you covered. Things covered in this book are Pizza and pasta based dishes along with several not so Americanized Italian dishes. You'll get recipes for making home made pasta as well as several types of breads that won't blow your diet.

Even though I am no longer strictly following the Weight Watchers plan we still turn to this book for our favorites.

5 out of 5 stars No One Believes!!.......2001-12-16

No one believes me when I say the best seafood restaurant I have ever been to was Bob Chinn's in Wheeling, IL (just outside of Chicago). I was in the Navy and traveled a great deal always savoring the foods. When I was stationed at NTC Geat Lakes, I was introduced to Bob Chinn's and my wife and I made at least a bi-weekly visit there. It wasn't uncommon to arrive 2 hours after opening and find yourself with a three hour wait.

Now we live in VA and remember the days of the greatest seafood ever. You have no idea how estatic I was to find this cookbook searching on the web for similar recipes I have tasted at Bob's.

Even if you have never eaten at the restaurant, this cookbook will make your freinds believe you are the greatest seafood cook in history.

                      Thanks Bob.

5 out of 5 stars Just Like the Restaurant.......2000-12-02

For those of us lucky enough to have spent many a night "chowing down" on the out-of-this-world seafood and garlic rolls at this 600 seat suburban Chicago institution, what a THRILL it's been to own a cookbook with all the restaurant's best recipes! While other cookbooks from well-known restaurants omit favorites, due to secret/family recipes, etc... this book spills them all. From my all-time fave, sauteed scallops (in sherry-lemon sauce!!), to the irresistible garlic rolls, it's all here, along with great asides/behind-the-scenes talk and some nice photos. Though slightly simplified for home cooking, the recipes are absolutely comparable to "being there." After regular trips to Chinn's for years, I now live 2 states away, yet can still "savor the flavor" - and without the 2 hour wait. Highly recommended, especially for those who've been lucky enough to experience Bob Chinn's in person.

5 out of 5 stars Great cook book!.......1998-12-29

I purchase alot of cook book and this is the ultimate seafood cook book. But it has more than that! I took it out from the library and ordered it at Amazon the next day! Recipes are simple with lotsa pictures!

                          Book Description

With the scroll saw and a brand new technique it's easy to make decorative woodwork that looks artfully hand-carved! This ingenious piece of equipment has transformed woodworking by simplifying almost every task, and once again it eliminates the need for advanced skills. The new process is called "segmentation," and with an expert's help anyone can master these cutting techniques. When you see the color photographs of beautiful things even beginners can make, you'll want to get started right away. After some basic information on the scroll saw and wood materials, instructions lay out the segmentation process in detail. Try them out on a variety of beautiful projects: three different kinds of colorful fish; graceful birds, including a swan; holiday motifs like Halloween pumpkins and Christmas angels; fantasy creatures, and many more! The author lives in Fish Creek, WI. 128 pages (all in color), 8 1/2 x 10.

Contextualizing Acts advances the discussion in this collection of innovative analyses of the intersection of Lukan narrative and Greco-Roman discourse. Topics span the adaptation of ancient rhetoric and historiography, influence of epics and novels, role of orality, and status of designations such as apologetic.

Social critic, major playwright, self-proclaimed genius, sexual adventurer, fanatical vegetarian, George Bernard Shaw was a kind of literary Superman in late Victorian England, a precursor of Pound and Eliot who helped blaze the trail for modernism. He was also a repressed homosexual. So argues Sally Peters, a lecturer at Wesleyan University, in this adventurous study of buried feminine and homoerotic themes in Shaw's life and work. Whether one agrees or disagrees with her thesis, Peters has produced a fascinating exploration of the man who lived life in pursuit of "the satisfaction of a passion in us of which we can give no rational account whatever."

                                        Book Description

In this critical biography of the man hailed as the second greatest playwright in the English language, Sally Peters explores Shaw`s background and beliefs, interests and obsessions, relations with men and women, and prose writings and dramatic art, and she reveals that he had a convoluted and extravagant inner life studded with erotic secrets.

If Bernard Shaw were not the second greatest playwright in the English language, this biography would not have such significance; and were it not for Shaw's multidimensional personality, this book would not possess so many fascinating dimensions. Sally Peters acknowledges her debt, and gives us a work without self-conscious authorship. It is a book that invites reading and rereading. Much has been made of Shaw's homosexuality; but Dr. Peters' focus is broader and deeper than that. A story, which often reads like the most engrossing fiction, Bernard Shaw: The Accent of the Superman, is a rewarding resource for any serious student of modern drama.

4 out of 5 stars Was Shaw gay?.......2000-08-16

Was Shaw gay? Dr. Peters builds a convincing argument that he probably was and that he used his vast intellect to erect every possible defense against his homosexual leanings ever coming to sustained expression. I thought I knew Shaw but I will never again look at him again now that I have read this provocative volume. I am giving it only 4 stars, however, because even my interest (and I am a fan of Shaw) could not be sustained for the entire length of this discussion of Shaw's romances/flirtations/avoidances.

5 out of 5 stars Complete and wonderful.......1999-05-12

This is a complete and wonderful biography of Bernard Shaw. Dr. Peters has written a thorough and fasinating history of a complex man. For the definitive word on Shaw, read this book.
