beautiful, original, enlightening.......2000-03-13
I've been researching the mythology of Lilith, especially contemporary interpretations, and Nick's story is by far my favorite. Frankly, I am growing tired of environmentalist and feminist tales, where Lilith is the harmonious nature-goddess or the woman who doesn't need a man. In my heart, the story of Eden is a story of independence versus obedience, newness versus stasis, true love versus the Voice. I'm indebted to Nick. Her Lilith, like her language, is extraordinarily beautiful.

Book Description
Courageous Parenting for Dangerous Times.
We live in frightening times, when stories of terrorism and child abductions lead the evening news, and kids regularly experiment with such dangers as drugs, alcohol, and premarital sex, raves and the occult. At such times, it seems to many parents that the world is falling apart. Nothing is more terrifying than sending our children out into a dangerous world. But what can we really do to protect our kids?
You Can Lead Your Family Out of Fear and Into Effective, Godly Living.
Scripture tells us that centuries ago, Daniel and his friends also faced a hostile world. Yet God provided a way for them to “walk tall in Babylon.” Not only did God keep them safe, he allowed them to profoundly affect the culture they touched–and he can protect and strengthen your kids in the same way.
Includes Materials for Personal or Group Study.
Customer Reviews:
Should Be Mandatory Reading!.......2005-02-23
"Walking Tall in Babylon" should be mandatory reading for all parents - that's how good I think this book is. Connie Neal's list of the seven characteristics of walking tall in Babylon, from her examination of Daniel and his friends' lives, is superb. With her, I pray every child (and adult) would be able to live according to this standard - myself included! The author's practical and realistic guidelines parents can follow to help their children live as Daniel did are complete, accurate, and well presented. This is an easy-to-read book. On top of all that, I believe the book should be purchased and read for her teaching on the "interplay between moral absolutes, consequences, mercy, and grace." Her charts and examples on thinking through life's decisions using David and Goliath and David and Bathsheba are brilliant! One more point - I laughed out loud at her example on pages 91-92. Buy the book so you, too, can enjoy Connie Neal's writing and be influenced by her insights.
A long overdue perspective in Christian Parenting.......2003-10-11
Kudos to Connie Neal for providing a much needed course correction in Christian parenting. So many Christian parent books feature a bunker mentality of hiding our children the dangers of culture. Unforunately this "fortress-mentalilty" isn't developmentally accurate. There is no consideration for the stages of moral development that every human goes through. Every child will someday abandon our nests of protection. We must give them a shield to take with them that they call their own.
Through story telling from her own parenting experiences, Connie paints a vision of a parent as coach. These parental coaches help children become equally verse in Biblical wisdom and "worldy" culture. The goal is that, like the young heroes n Babylon, today's Christian children will be able to navigate a pagan culture without being corrupted by it. Connie's vision for parenting transcends teaching children to merely survive culture. Connie sees a generation of Christian children with a Daniel-like ability to transform our culture.
This book is an important first step in getting parents to set their sights higher. Children and Youth Pastor should grab this book and begin to wrestle with how their ministries can help parents build these competencies in their children.
I highly recommend this book.
Invaluable Resource for Moms - and Dads!.......2003-09-02
American parents are tempted to two extreme positions in how to nurture their children. We tend to either 'shield and protect' our sons and daughters from the dangers of the world or 'expose and immerse' them for fear of they're not being prepared for the realities of modern life. Too often, I know, I've been guilty of trying to hit each end of this parenting spectrum simultaneously! As a homeschooling daddy of seven children, I lean to the 'shield and protect' ("wall yourself off!") side and overcompensate at times (camps! videos!)to be sure the older children aren't raised in a greenhouse, artificial environment. I have many friends with children in public and private schools who share with me their struggles to keep them safe and pure in a difficult environment so different than their homes.
I recommend to these friends and my homeschooling cohorts that they read Connie Neal's brilliant guide to hitting the parenting bullseye, 'Walking Tall in Babylon.' Mrs. Neal has run the race as a parent, seen the errors of both ends of the parenting spectrum, and shares her biblically based roadmap for 'shooting the gap.' Her writing is engaging, lucid, and compelling; her advice is sober, friendly, and do-able. To her credit, she never preaches or patronizes her reader. Instead, I was delighted to read that she is not the perfect mommy (if justifiably delighted by her children and their character), just a Christian woman who hoped to share with me both her mistakes and insights to help me be a better parent.
My wife and I have read 'Walking Tall' and it has played a big part in changes we are making and qualities we have retained in our 'unschooling' plans for the coming year with our brood. I know Mrs. Neal's advice will be just as helpful to parents with children in school, school-at-home, or even those in day or boarding schools. If you're a Mom or a Dad wanting to check your current parenting compass or road-map against a standard of 'true North', get a copy of 'Walking Tall in Babylon' today (and if you don't think you need to make a check, believe me, that's the best sign that you need to check it immediately!).
Inspiring, Timely and Crucial!!.......2003-08-26
As a single parent of two children, one well on her way into the teenage years, I live in fear of the "education" she is getting on values and morality from our world. Even worse, I feel (and sound) like a broken record when I resort to lecturing my daughter about the evils of society.
So, what can a concerned, frightened parent do to stem the influence of the world on their impressionable children and protect them from the resulting damage of acting on these influences? Connie Neal gives us a simple, straightforward strategy in this book. Her comparison of our society to ancient Babylon is chillingly fitting.
While most Christian parents seek to isolate their kids from the evils of society, she illustrates why this is actually detrimental in its failure to prepare them for a world they will have to survive in. Her strategy of "arming children with the word of God" to protect themselves is a much more realistic and empowering approach, as Daniel's story eloquently demonstrates.
I think it is crucial that parents realize that, while teaching the Word is very important, LIVING THE WORD WHILE TEACHING IT is what will really drive the message home (or sabotage it with hypocrisy). I use this realization daily as inspiration to be true to my faith.
The only part of the book I struggle with is how EXACTLY to teach the Word. The Ten Commandments, Old Testament, New Testament, Biblical Morality lessons??? Where does an overwhelmed parent begin?? Perhaps Connie Neal will address this in a future book.
Again, many thanks Connie, for writing an inspiring, challenging and practical call-to-action book for parents who often feel helpless to defend their children against the tide of toxic temptation dumped on them daily. Your strategy is the most effective defense I have seen by far.
Bravo!!!

A Good Walk Spoiled.......2001-08-04
I have to confess, first of all, that "Walking to Babylon" is the only post-"Doctor Who" New Adventure that I've read. After Virgin's "Doctor Who" license lapsed, I chose not to follow the Benny NAs. I came to this book solely because it was written by Kate Orman, and I wanted to read her non-DW work to see what she was up to. Happily, "Walking to Babylon" is a marveolous book.As with most DW stories, it benefits from a small cast. This provides for a small-scale, charming read, strongly in Kate's tradition. Ancient Babylon is threatened by a recurring storyline from the Benny Books, and even though I entered this series with Book 10, I was able to follow along. Bernice, as always in Kate's stories a savvy, well-read archaelogist, hardly ever a hostage to campiness, is dispatched to 570 BCE to foil an alien incursion of dubious intentions. Babylon is gentle and evocative of other locales Kate's visited, and Earth's distant past is never patronized.I only had two problems with the book. First, and this is a problem also extant in SLEEPY, Return of the Living Dad, and Room With No Doors, is that the initial premise -- a rich one -- gets lost in a set of non-threatening plot twists about halfway through. The guest cast is replaced by characters not present at the outset, and the end result, playing with a different set of cards, is always less memorable.Second is John Lafayette, the Edwardian translator mistakenly transported to Babylon, where he becomes an erstwhile romantic foil for Benny. The Benny/John pairing has things to say about sex, mores, and politics -- it's just that these statements once again catapult Benny into the preachy caricature she's been in far too many prior books. Self-righteousness becomes no-one, and hardly replace the awe Benny could have felt at visiting Babylon. But in the long run, or walk, this book is still well worth reading, and I'm glad I entered the Benny series to find it.
A journey of a thousand years begins with a single step.......2000-02-16
On the surface, WALKING TO BABYLON sounded like a fairly standard novel--having to walk back in time to Ancient Babylon to stop two time travelers before the world is destroyed.
This is, however, anything but a fairly standard novel. Kate Orman draws the readers into the struggles of archaeologist Bernice Summerfield, who finds herself on a race against time to remove two rogue travelers whose very presence endangers all of Earth's history.
As strong as the plotting itself is, it's the little details that help carry the book forward. Bernice's characterization is incredibly strong, and it's one of the few books where you can really feel the clock ticking, through the characters's tension and emotion which oozes through the page.
Lyrical, witty, and brave; WALKING TO BABYLON is Kate Orman at the top of her game.
The Best New Adventure Yet.......1999-06-20
First of all, I have liked every Kate Orman book I've ever read. She writes like a fan, so it's been said, but I think that this is a compliment.
Simply put, this is the best of the New Adventures so far. I read the entire book in one sitting. Could not put it down. I enjoy all the stories that feature God and The People.
So why should somebody buy it? Simply put, Bernice Summerfield might be the most interesting character in series science fiction today, especially the way Kate Orman imagines her. Long live Bernice!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2007-07-09
I was quite surprised when I bought this book how much information is given for each dish. Nutrient content as well as calories per serving. One of the best things about this book is the diversity it offers. So many different ethnic based foods. I definitely recommend this book for those who are health consious and also wanting to try great food every night.
Good stuff.......2007-06-27
I got this book because I loved - EatingWell Serves Two: 150 Healthy in a Hurry Suppers so much. This book is close to as good, but the portions didn't work as well for me.
Most seem to serve 3 to 5 people depending on your hunger level. Make sure you have a good side dish however and it is the perfect book for finding something great and healthy to cook up for company.
Very easy to follow and the dishes are simple without to many odd (read hard to find) ingredients.
Practical but very pedestrian.......2007-05-16
This book disappointed me. I've used Eating Well recipes in the past and have always been very pleased. The recipes in this book, however, are very pedestrian and geared to a novice cook. Quick cooking -- the kind that can be completed in 45 minutes -- can still be interesting and inventive. These recipes were just practical. Still, it's a well done book with nice photographs, and the health information is useful. I wish there were a real dessert section, though -- because desserts *can* be made in 45 minutes or less!
Healthy and dependable.......2007-05-12
I have been using this cookbook a lot. The recipes are healthy and dependable (they turn out the way they're supposed to). It provides the variety I need when looking for low-fat recipes. It is comparable to some of the Weight Watchers cookbooks, such as Meals in Minutes.
Not for an average Joe.......2007-04-10
Has some neat ideas and recipes but not for a larger family or for your average Joe. It uses a lot of ingredients that most have never heard of or can't get a hold of or wouldn't want to use anyway.

Customer Reviews:
bad cookbook, decent party planning book.......2006-01-10
ONLY buy this book if you're looking for party planning ideas. the recipes are overly simple: for example, a few pages are dedicated to teaching you how to lay out deli meats for a buffet. many recipes suggest using store-bought cake and muffin mixes...gross! the pictures are pretty, though.
beautiful yet practical.......2003-02-27
Now let's be fair. I wouldn't call a book with full page photos every other page minimally pictured. Topping the quantity of the pictures is the quality--crisp, rich, highly inspiring. (If you like the magazine Real Simple, you will like this book.)
Some of the recipes look complicated but are in fact fairly easy to follow. I tried a few and the results came out pretty close to the pictures. Every menu comes in a Plan Ahead version and a Last Minute version. So if you are in a time crunch and still want to impress your friends, this book is for you.
Love It.......2002-12-03
I found this book to be incredibly inspiring. The ideas and the recipes are new and inventive. It's beautifully photographed and well written--a definite keeper!
Pretty...good.......2002-10-28
I bought this books in hope of getting lots of great ideas! I love pictures for ideas and there were minimal pictures...the menus were so so and pretty complicated. Some great ideas thrown in the midst of all the "stuff". Good book for those who don't need visual inspiration and can create recipes with ease!

Book Description
This lively, readable and challenging new biography, by the editor of the acclaimed Arden edition of Shakespeare's Sonnets, takes a fresh look at an enduring cultural icon, about whose life it is widely claimed that nothing is known. As a result Shakespeare has tended to be viewed in Romantic isolation: the Bard as lonely inspired singer enthroned on a mountain peak. The aim of this study is to replace the image of the lonely genius with one of Shakespeare as deeply involved, even enmired, in the geographical, social and literary context of his time. This Shakespeare is a man who lives in a congested city and has to deal with disease, debt and cut-throat competition; his manifest brilliance often makes him the object of envy and malice, rather than adulation. Much of his life and writing is seen as the result of accident and circumstance, rather than the product of artistic vision or a grand career plan. From his shotgun wedding at the age of 18 to the burning down of the Globe Theatre over 30 years later, he is beset by bad luck. His most brilliant works are seen as creative responses to external constraints, such as the plague outbreaks that frequently closed the public theatres during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Katherine Duncan-Jones also takes a fresh look at the tradition of Shakespeare's love for a 'Dark Lady' and concludes rather that he devoted his most personal and passionate writing to the service of young men.
Customer Reviews:
Rattling the Bones.......2004-06-07
I enjoyed this highly original Shakespeare biography, if only because of its deliberate departure from mainstream Bardolatry. Biographers of Shakespeare are in a paradoxical situation: Shakespeare left behind reams of writings of genius, and many legal documents, but there is little solid indication of what sort of personality he was, or what made him tick. Would-be biographers therefore resort to supposition and fabrication to fill in the numerous blanks. Biographies of Shakespeare thus reflect more about the desires, needs, and personality of the biographer than Shakespeare himself. Duncan-Jones' book is no exception. She seems to be motivated by a rather adolescent resentment of Shakespeare because many fine Elizabethan or Jacobean writers, such as Sidney, Nashe, Webster, and Marston, are neglected at his expense. This leads her into the worst possible interpretation of Shakespeare's activities at every turn. Despite this, or because of it, Ungentle Shakespeare is compelling, provocative, and important, by forcing us to acknowledge the possibility that Shakespeare (gasp!) was a complex, flawed guy. It is well-written and generally well-argued. Occasionally, her animus against Shakespeare leads her into assertions which are plain silly: Why should Shakespeare's appropriation of Robert Greene's Pandosto for the plot of The Winter's Tale be seen as "settling scores"? More realistically, this is a probably a generous tribute to a departed rival.
Readers seeking a more favorable slant are advised to read Michael Wood's intriguing biography (another shocker: was Shakespeare Catholic?) or the very sober, but highly reliable biography by Park Honan.
Provocative and informative.......2004-02-26
The reviewer who dismissed this book as "fiction" was totally wrong. This is a highly original book, which shows us that the implications of the familiar evidence for Shakespeare's life have never been fully understood until now. The author is not afraid to challenge many of our most entrenched assumptions about Shakespeare -- not least the hope that he must have been "a nice person". Duncan-Jones uses her brilliant knowledge of original documents and sources to demonstrate that there is a great deal of evidence that Shakespeare behaved pretty badly in relation to the poor and towards his daughters, and that he wangled his way to getting a coat of arms. It's a refreshing picture, which hasn't been presented in ANY previous biography; perhaps it's no coincidence that this is the first Shakespeare biography written by a woman. But this is by no means simply a hatchet job. Duncan-Jones' account of Shakespeare's social climbing is balanced by some wonderfully sensitive accounts of the plays; she shows her capacity both for sharp psychological insight, and for appreciative literary criticism. Anyone interested in Shakespeare (and who isn't?) needs to buy this book.
Yawn.......2003-11-10
As with Duncan-Jones's biography of Sidney, her strength is her imagination. A book, like so many other 'Shakespeare biographries', that belongs on the 'fiction' shelf.
The Arden Shakespeare graced by a provocative new biography.......2001-08-18
Recent years have given us several fine new works on Shakespeare, among them Harold Bloom's prickly but masterful "The Invention of the Human" and Park Honan's well-researched, sober "Shakespeare - A Life". To these we must now add Katherine Duncan-Jones' "Ungentle Shakespeare". Where Bloom illuminates the works and marvels at the scope of Shakespeare's mind, and Honan relates the life based on the "facts", with as little speculation as possible, Ms. Duncan-Jones draws on what is clearly an encyclopedic knowledge of documents, history, and scholarship to consciously extract from the context of the times possible insights into the man and his craft.
The author (refreshingly) sets out with nothing special to prove and no incipient desire to deify or demonize the Bard. Even Honan seems to tend, if in doubt, to "find in the Bard's favour": the sum left Stratford's poor in Shakespeare's will, for example, is deemed a "generous bequest". Until, that is, it is viewed next to the bequests of other contemporary people of wealth, as Duncan-Jones does, revealing it as paltry by comparison - once we view it in a broader context.
This is the pattern for the entire book: intentionally not an exhaustive biography, "Scenes From His Life" (the book's sub-title) are used to illuminate the poet's achievement, hitherto unexplored but likely aspects of his personality, and his journey through his times in a way that nicely supplements more (and also far less) cautious biographys. In questioning certain aspects of received wisdom, Duncan-Jones invites us to envision Shakespeare the man, living and interacting in a complex, high-pressure reality, not as a Cultural Icon on a pedestal.
For those of us who wish to "take him all in all", Duncan-Jones' "Ungentle Shakespeare" is a wonderful invitation to broaden our perspective on the Bard. Orchids to the Arden Series for publishing it, as it expands on and supplements information in the series' excellent introductions to specific plays. My bottom line: I've seldom put down a biography with such a sense of having gotten real insights about a famous historical figure about whom (ostensibly)"little is known".
