In this tale, a monk, a sorceror, a gnomish wizard and dwarven cleric deal with Nerull, the god of death, and his cults attempt to destroy the monkish order the protagonist Ember belongs to. Nerull's influence apparently carrying over from the Living Dead, shades of Bhaal and the Forgotten Realms.
This short book packs a lot into it, a fledgling romance between Ember and the sorceror, humor from the wizard-sorceror arguments of the two magic-users, a rather decent magic duel contest, and a quick dungeon crawl to root out the source of the cult's resurgence.
Somewhat predictable, yes, the characters though are developed well enough for a short work and the ending is appropriate but slightly surprising.
A nice night's light entertainment here, the series has improved with each volume to become solidly entertaining light reading.
Author not only describe every details very carefully, but also emphasize the though and feeling of each character pretty well, which is definitely a plus. Smooth story line, it just simply fun and charming to read it on and on.
The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the ending. For all the journey they went through, the final challenge facing Sosfane was surprisingly short and simply too fast to end. And during the most important battle like this one, Nebin was knock out cold even before it really started, and cause the life of Brek, who I had my tear for his memorial. Having said so, the potential branch story line author put in at the end, would definitely leave all readers the whole era of imagination.
Like I stated in the subject, this is the best one in the series so far. I can't wait for the next title, "City of Fire".
Continuity fans will be glad to see Claire taking a more active role and mentions of events in the previous novel (Jack's house being bombed, Julie Price's duty with the TEC, etc.).
Continuity fans will despise the fact that this novel continues the need for "blast suits" for time travel, which is completely absent in the TV series, and one cringes to notice that the story takes place *after* Viper's Spawn (whose ending takes place on Dec. 31, 2007), and yet still takes place, somehow, during 2007. It can't be both before *and* after your first novel, Mr. Parkinson.

This book, a BBQ grill, and a few good buddies or family members is a match made in heaven. The pictures make me want to grill everything they list as my mouth waters while I read. The directions are easy to understand, filled in with overall useful grilling tips like how to cut and prepare your meats, to prep work and preheating, and even how to dazzle your meal with the perfect grill marks.
If you use to just get by while grilling or were only okay with the meal that you just cooked you need to pick up this book! Also expand your diet because it's so easy to try new recipes from this book.... Pick this up and enjoy every meal!

I have made more recipes from this cookbook than any other book in my collection. Just the chicken recipes alone are worth it. I was never expecting it to be a favorite when I originally purchased it. My sister now owns it too and has given it a pretty good workout also. Relatively easy with plenty of good photos. You will not regret owning it and no I don't work for Weber.

I picked this book up on a whim at a local book store, so I had an opportunity to look through it before buying. You should be aware that it's mostly pictures, with relatively little text aside from the captions. However, if what you want is a book of photos of Modern architecture and furniture, it's superb.
There is a seemingly endless series of photos showing various diverse interpretations of the Modern style, with excellent captions explaining the details of architecture, furniture, and decoration. It both looks at rooms as a whole and at details in specific, in separate sections of the book. The rooms shown are almost universally stylish and inspiring to the budding home decorator. The book shows furniture and design from throughout the Modern period, ranging from the 1920's through the 1970's, and also shows how Modern pieces can be blended smoothly with Contemporary designs of today.
As it is largely a photo book, I should comment that the paper and printing quality are excellent, with superb color, fine detail, and gorgeous glossy pages.
If you like the modern style and are looking for some inspiration on how to decorate your home, this is a wonderful book to have, and in my opinion [inexpensive] for its quality. If you're looking for a reference book with long discussions of the style and its influences, this is not the book you're looking for.

I purchased this book thinking I could use it as a reference book for my Master's thesis paper on Art Nouveau's influence on the De Stijl and Bauhaus movements. I was wrong. This book contains a lot of really nice photos, but there is very little description about the photos. It even lacks identification of many of the subjects in the photos. If you're looking for a "pretty book" this is it, if you want an informative book look for Stephen Escritt's "Art Nouveau."

Not much substance for anyone looking to use this as a reference (I recommend Taschen's series for this) but the layouts and photography are superb. There is a wide range of furniture and accessories illustrated with many of the "famous" designs being shown in quite interesting arrangements.
Definitely for the afficianado, this is something you flip through for inspiration when trying to decide how to reupholster that old Danish chair you found at a yard sale.

This is a fantastic pattern book! Lots of ideas, and things to work with. Adaptable to different sizes and types of dolls. The only caveat is that on a few of the patterns you have to improvise a little, and there is little or no gauge information. I've found that I start out with a pattern, and if it doesn't look like it will fit a doll, I'll rip it out and adjust accordingly. But it's a great reference--good for all-bisques, larger bisque headed dolls, compo, etc. The whole series (vols. 1 through 3) is well worth the money!

A PARABLE ON PROPERTY.......2007-06-15
One of the master communist playwright Bertolt Brecht's strengths as an artist was the ability to set up a moral dilemma and work it out to a conclusion, not always a satisfactory one, by play's end. This is unusual in a seemingly orthodox follower of the old Stalinist' socialist realist' cultural program. This work nevertheless permitted Brecht to address an age-old question about the nature of property ownership, extending it from its natural and historic setting in land and chattels to the question of personal human ownership.
The question posed here is whether a child abandoned by its natural mother then found and raised by another women should go to the former or that latter. Nice dilemma, right? But Brecht, as seem in Mother Courage and other parables, is not above cutting right to the bone on moral questions. What makes this work a cut above some of Brecht's more didactic plays is the way that he weaves the parable about the odd resolution of an ancient Chinese property dispute and places that `wisdom' in context of a then current dispute between two Soviet-era communes.
In the ancient dispute the judge who is called upon to render judgment, using the circle as a medium to resolve the dispute, seems to be Solomonic but is really a buffoon. This is pure Brechtian irony. This says as much about Brecht attitude toward property as it does about the old time Chinese justice system. The question of property rights as presented by Brecht and their value as a societal glue is also something the reader or viewer of this play should think about as well.

Brecht's "The Caucasian Chalk Circle," written in self-imposed exile towards the end of World War II, is a story within a play, in which a bard, or singer, interrupts a group of Caucasian farmers arguing over ownership of land that has been ravaged by Nazi tanks and entertains them with a relevant tale of yore. In a city called Grusinia, the Governor is executed in a coup and his wife flees for her life, abandoning their baby son Michael, who is picked up by a humble kitchen maid named Grusha. Having recently betrothed herself to a soldier named Simon who is away on duty, she sets out on a cross-country journey with the infant to get help from her brother, a farmer in a distant village.
Lavrenti, her brother, suggests she get married immediately to avoid suspicion that the baby is hers out of wedlock, and the most available candidate is a local wretched peasant. After living with this man for a couple of years, Grusha is apprehended by soldiers who have come to take young Michael, the sole heir of the deposed Governor's estate, back to Grusinia. The case of Michael's custody, contested by the Governor's wife against Grusha, is brought to trial, where the judge, a drunk named Azdak whose unofficial appointment to this position is a farce, decrees that the boy will be placed inside a circle drawn with chalk on the courtroom floor, and that the woman who is able to pull him out of the circle is the real mother. (Study the judge's exact words when you read this.)
Although the story is of medieval Chinese origin, Brecht's play is a sort of refashioning of the Biblical anecdote about Solomon and expands the idea by supplying a whole backstory to the women's argument. Solomon's judgment is accepted because his wisdom is universally considered to be impeccable, but what of a man like Azdak who functions on whim more than on wisdom? The ending is subtly brilliant in the sense that the outcome of the contest is subject to semantic debate (whether you think the judgment is fair or logical or contradictory depends on how closely you read the judge's words), but also in the question of irony or sincerity in the suggestion that true justice will be conferred by nature rather than by man.
Brechtýs Question: Not a ýRedý Herring

It's popular now-a-days to call communism "out of touch" and socialism "out of style." Brecht's question, then: Who should own anything? Should possession be nine-tenths of the law? Or should the laws of ownership remain an open-ended affair? -- could be called a foregone conclusion.
Woe to the foregone conclusion, then. Its trial date is ever on the way.
Laughably, the Helms-Burton bill, recently signed into law by Pres. Bill Clinton, is a giggle back to Brecht's discussion. And a silly one. One should think that were the United States to be in the business of giving back land "once stolen," that the Navajo, Sioux, Chippewa, et. al. would be first in line.
Not so!
Apparently, Cuba's land belongs not to its current owners, but to its capitalists of 40 years hence. Oh, silliness. Oh, amusement.
So ask Brecht's question, then, not as a socialist, a communist or a red. Ask it as a human being. To whom does anything belong? What is belonging? What is ownership? Who owns anything? When - and why - does ownership occasionally turn on its own head?

This book is full of wonderful plays by Bertolt Brecht. I had performed a scene from The Judge in one of my acting classes in community college, and I just HAD to get my hands on my own copy after. I'm glad I got it, because I love reading all of his plays.

This play has many angles of which may be interpreted. You can see that the wife and husband are well known in the community and the husband is intelligent. The wife is trying to find a way to stand up to her husband (about her leaving him to go to safer Amsterdam during WWII), but will she be able to gather her courage and speak up or just go along with what he tells her, though she thinks he is wrong?

Whatever the controversy in Brecht's personal life or even his authorship of the work which we credit him, the works contained in this collection are windows to understanding the form championed by many as the only alternative to Stanislavsky's method.
'The Elephant Calf' and 'The Measures Taken' are lessons in action and politics. 'The Jewish Wife' apart from being one of the most important monologues of all time, is a lesson in humanity. A great collection for any actor or serious theatre enthusiast.

Brecht's language is melting. The plot resembles that of Chekhov's Platonov, only more poetic. Is one of Brecht's best plays, often underrated. Highly recommended by this reader.

"The Good Woman of Sezuan" is my favourite play of Brecht's and I really recommend it to anyone who is interested in german literature and plays. It's also a good one to start if this is your first contact with Bertolt Brecht!

I find in Brecht's Good Woman a Mary Magdalen : 11 good men and a woman to wash
their feet can change the world. Is truth reality? Can a playwright get by with telling it as he sees it? Any Sophist can tell you that materialism rules the earth.
The first play is about goodness and the last is about justice,they have some common sense together.
In this day when the world is pregnant around us, who will be judged the father? Both Communism and Capitalism have been materialistically raising these planet breaking industrial children.
And we are left looking for a good person to raise the chaos child of disaster?
