Book Description
Mauve Desert is both a single novel and three separate novels in one. In the first, Mauve Desert, 15-year-old Mélanie drives across the Arizona desert in a white Meteor chasing fear and desire, cutting loose from her mother and her mother’s lover Lorna in their roadside Mauve Motel. In the second book, Maude Laures reads Mauve Desert, becomes obsessed with it, and embarks on an extraordinary quest for its mysterious author, characters and meaning. The third book – Mauve, the Horizon – is Laures’ eventual translation of Mauve Desert. Like all good translations, it is both the same and revealingly different from the original. Nicole Brossard’s writing is agile and inventive; from moment to moment gripping, exhilarating and erotic.
Customer Reviews:
Translations galore.......2002-03-31
Mauve Desert is an excellent book and especially interesting for people interested in postmodern, translation and/or feminist theories. It is also a great example of a "hypertext" or non-linear text and one which incorporates scientific metaphors into the plot seamlessly. Brossard has done an exceptional job of both illustrating and dissecting issues of translation and language, especially as they relate to the world of mothers and daughters. Mauve Desert deftly negotiates several issues of linguistic mobility, both within the framework of the book and in the translation from the French original. She slips in and out of the languages of English, French and mathematics with ease. Ironically, despite this, my only issue with Mauve Desert is precisely one of translation. In both the French original and the English translation there is some linguistic cross-over in her word-play. Although the translator (Susanne de Lotbiniere-Harwood) does an admirable job with the bulk of the book, there are some expressions that should have been left as they were in the original (in my opinion). Regardless of this minor issue, there is nothing that truly detracts from Brossard's text and I recommend it highly - particularly the French original if you can read the language and are lucky enough to get your hands on a copy (they are even harder to come by than the English version)!
(N.B. I would prefer to give it 4.5 stars because of translation issues, but I can't bring myself to give it a 4.)
Everybody should read this book.......2000-10-07
I agree with the first reviewer. I recommend this book to everyone, although I have heard that some people find it a bit difficult to read at times. I think this is partly because the book has a dreamlike quality to it - by that I mean time moves strangely sometimes and there are different elements all acting at once - but like a dream, the whole flows together. If anyone is interested, an artist did a multimedia project, with the same title, based on the book. I think the artists' name is Adrienne Jenik and I believe she taught in the University of California system. The project she created is great, and it adds a level of interpretation and complexity to Brossards work. I highly recommend it.
this book is not out of print.......1999-03-31
Nicole Brossard is brilliant. It is advisable to read up on feminist theory a bit before you dive in. Otherwise some central symbols and meaning will be lost to you. If you like David Lynch... Brossard is way better. Some knowledge of the French language would be a boon also, if one is inclined to onamastic study. read it. then read it again. then put it aside for a year. read it again. repeat as required.

Book Description
In the far reaches of our galaxy, the artist will face the ultimate censorship.
Mikk of Vyzania, the galaxy's greatest performance master, commanded stages on all the myriad worlds. His sublime, ethereal performances were unforgettable, drawing on the most treasured traditions of every culture, every people, throughout inhabited space. His crowning achievement, and his obsession: the Somalite song dance, an art form that transcends both song and movement to become something greater and more spectacular . . . almost divine.
When tragic events caused performance of the song dance to be proscribed, Mikk was devastated . . . until his strong sense of justice forced him to defy the ban. His trial will be the most sensational in the recent history of the galaxy; the sentence he faces is death.
Now the greatest performance master must hope to become the greatest escape artist. Somehow Mikk must break the stranglehold of censorship and change the law . . . or die trying!
Customer Reviews:
There's talent here, but it's not refined.......2006-10-22
This book had no middle ground. It was by turns creative and stunning, and flat and boring.
Some things Waitman did really well were the character development of Mikk, the memories of his mother, and the Master.
Yet mixed in with this were some horribly written scenes and characters. Thissizz, the famed snake, wasn't described very well. Mikk's brilliance was very overdone, making him less easy to identify with- and making me sick with jealousy, of course.
It's worth reading for the good parts, but the bad parts were painfully so. The relationship between Thissizz and Mikk, while essential to the book, was a strange and uninformed depiction of homosexual love which involved overdone feminity on Mikk's part and loads of love-bird prattle between the two.
beautiful and unique.......2006-07-03
"The Merro Tree" is one of my favorite stand-alone novels. It is beautifully written and -- a rarity in SF these days -- unique both in its characterizations and its plot. It is one of those rare books which I found myself still thinking about many days after reading it. Kudos to Waitman for her stunning debut novel!
Unfortunately, Waitman's second and only other novel to date ("The Divideded") was a sore disappointment.
sf romance.......2005-04-08
i read all the reviews about this book and i decided to add mine because nobody seems to catch what in my opinion is the point of this novel.
this work has undoubtedly a sf background: alien worlds and races, spaceships, etc.
it deals with important issues such as the value of art, censorship, the tendency of people to create sort of dictatorial institutions they must afterwards fight against, same sex and interracial relationships.
still one has to admit this is not really pure sf, because ms waitman seems to have decided to use such a (interesting and detailed) background to express her views on some topics. she manages to do it with little inconsistencies and very few slow pages, which is remarkable for a first novel.
this is a bildungsroman (sorry, i do not know the english word) such as goethe's but it is not half as boring or selfindulgent: ms waitman writing might not be spotless but the plot structure is complex, intriguing and achieves a lot of tension.
what one would not expect is that this novel is basically an enthralling if a little exotic love story: the two main characters share a growing, developing, intimate affection depicted in a simple but moving way. one of them is humanoid, the other a sort of giant snake, both are males (and the author is not, one should remember) but disbelief is easily suspended and ms waitman manages to give us a very effective idea of their PHYSICAL desire for each other too. the only point i feel i have to complain about is the idea of both being basically heterosexuals who share love out of a kind of predestination. i found this rather unbelievable; but this is sf, so i imagine her idea is legitimate.
Must read for performers ..........2003-07-04
This book is simply amazing. As one of the reviews before me states, it really gets into some of the base psychological issues a performer feels as they learn and atempt to master their craft and shape into an art that is their own. If you don't recognize parts of yourself in Mik you'll see a friend. I am an avid reader and this is one of the few books I have enjoyed time and time again.
I have looked for another book by this author every single time I have been in a book store since, hoping to find another gem like this one. Thank you, Katie.. and I hope your writing the next one now!
Simply wonderful.......2001-05-02
This is a fabulous book. Waitman is brilliant.

Diary of Victor Frankenstein
ASIN: 0879515112 |
Customer Reviews:
Great concept, but doesn't deliver.......2007-09-07
Jeremy Kay does a great job in bringing forth a great idea for all the die-hard Frankenstein fans (such as myself), but beyond that fact it doesn't do a good job as posing like the journal. I never got the impression I was ACTUALLY reading the secret journal of Dr. Frankenstein. Considering this is the whole premise of the book, its inadequacy on this part makes me give the rating only 2 stars.
The journal covers all the way from Victor's childhood, through his creation of the monster, all the way to his dying words in the icy North. There are a few drawings in the book that (unlike previous comments) seem "too good" to be a sketch of a scientist. It becomes obvious one is looking at the work of an artist rather than a sketch of a brilliant scientist.
All this to say, I am completely spoiled from the best adaptation concept of Victor's diary with TIMOTHY BASIL ERING and ROSCOE COOPER's "Diary of Victor Frankensteins". I HIGHLY recommend this as the supreme out of the two. Every entry looks like the paper would after a couple hundred years of decay with dark sketches that are highly real and with hand writing that seems completely life-like (and difficult to read at times as a result...a nice touch indeed). Keep away from Kay's book and search for Ering's book instead!
Now the secrets are available to anyone........2005-09-27
Now that the private, secret journals have been discovered and made available ,the methods, procedures and scientific discoveries of Dr.Frankenstein are explained in detail so that it is now possible for others to follow and produce new monsters.
The journals are beautifully written and illustrated and while giving the secrets involved;the journals also give a clear insight into the mindset and intentions of Dr.Frankenstein.The journals show why he pursued his scientific studies. It also gives a detailed insight into the state of medical science and what rudimentry equipment was available for scientists to carry on their research during the early 1800's.
We also see how the generally accepted wisdom of the time was so wrong. For instance, around 1817,the process of blood transfusions were banned by the French Parliament,England's Royal Society and the Pope. The issue of Stem Cell Research and Cloneing is now endorsed by the Scientific Establishment.Could they be just as wrong?Just remember the generally accepted wisdom at the time is usually proven totally wrong in the future.
The personal, handwritten script and wonderfully detailed illustrations along with the nine page wide fold-out illustration of the laboratory and all its equipment is ,all by itself, worth the price of the book.A wonderful book to accompany Mary Shelley's classic book.
an incredible work of art........1999-05-07
this book is dazzling. it fills in what Mary Shelley decided to skip, and does it well. the handwriting is in a flowing cursive, and it shows all the flights of fancy and madness Frankenstein had. a beautiful foldout shows his lab and equipment. reading it, one gets the feeling that you really could make a monster. The illustrations are not for the weak of heart, for they are often magnificently disgusting.

The Mixer Bible.......2007-09-30
I love this cookbook for the KitchenAid Mixer I bought. Tells you what attachment to use on each recipe. In the last couple of months I have used it many times.
Just so so.......2007-08-06
I'm really disappointed, not to many recipes that I would try. Only one cheesecake recipe :-(
mixer bible.......2007-08-01
This mixer bible was the second part of the anniversary present. I've looked through this and the recipes look yummy! We're excited to use it as I really like the "side notes" on the pages. Those will help alot in substituting and measuring.
Not what I expected.......2007-04-19
Not just titled the bible, many people consider it to be the bible of mixers. Unfortunately, I disagree. I'm not sure what I was expecting- I guess I was looking for new uses for my mixer along with a great set of recipes. There's about 4 pages of tips for using your mixer.
Instead most are regular recipes that look for some way to use the mixer- usually when it makes no sense. Take the soups for example. Sorry, I'm not going to use my mixer as a strainer. How about using the mixer to mash your potatoes? No thanks. I've got cheap, easy, and effective hand tools to take care of those tasks.
It's not a total loss. The sausage, bread, and dessert sections are great. That's a PRACTICAL use for my mixer. All in all, this is primarily a recipe book with little to do with your stand mixer. The bible, it is not
Fully Reccomend!.......2007-04-12
I bought this w/ my KA pasta attachments & it's just wonderful. I'm one of those that's had a standmixer for 2yrs & never used it to it's full potential. So this has become a wonderful companion!

Another useful book.......2004-06-18
This book has one unusual strength: most poses are shown from many angles, up to about two dozen in some cases. This gives extra insight into unusual foreshortening and into how the figure articulates.
The weakness of this book is that, in order to show so many different views on a page, each figure photo is relatively small. This is especially disappointing because the models are all Japanese, where most pose books show only European features and figures. This book never meant to document details of faces, though, so I really can't complain,
light and dark.......2000-03-14
From moderate shadow to deep chiascuro effects this is a beautiful addition to the Pose File series. The other books excellently describe the figure, in proportion, motion and moving through space, but mostly in an even tonal scale. This volume emphasizes the extremes of that scale, making it a necessary addition to the set.
good book, decent series, outrageous price..........1999-10-12
I'm trying to learn how to draw, and the books in this and similar series would be really helpful--if I could afford any of them. I found this book in a store where I live and decided to buy it until I checked the price tag that the store had stuck onto it. because I lived in Japan for a while, I'm used to the printed price that appears on all books, so I had just looked there. I have decided to wait until Christmas when I can buy it myself for a decent price. Blah.
Not the last, mind you..........1999-02-26
--Please read my,(Cobalt) previous reviews of the earlier volumes--
-- I am surprised to see that there is no listing of Pose file 8 (Overhead/Underfoot) or Pose File 9 (Group poses), and I would like to take a moment to say that they are both great and you should do your best to find them somewhere... -- Volume seven is one of my favorites, the theme here is lighting, and the lit models look great and show much detail. The poses themselves are a plethora of themes from the previous series, with the added element of a single light source, making some of the models even look sinister, (fantasy artists should have fun with that). Definitely one of the better volumes.
Cobalt
It's Pose File 1... And then some..........1999-02-26
---Please read my,(Cobalt) review of volume one---
--Pose File 2 is basically a sequel to Pose file one. I have noticed that the poses are not only different, but also just a little more dynamic.--Unlike the later series, there appears to be no major theme, (I still can't read that Kanji) but it is a thorough book nonetheless.--I recommend that you get the later "themed" series, and then get 2 to complete your collection. --Definitely useful, but don't rush this one...

Book Description
Cathy Lee Crosby is an internationally known and multitalented actress, writer, and producer--star of stage, film, and television. Six years ago, however, in spite of her success, four traumatic events left her world in chaos and despair: the death of her grandmother, contracting Epstein-Barr Syndrome, divorcing football star Joe Theisman and declaring bankruptcy after Joe sued her for half of everything.
Let the Magic Begin is the powerful, inspiring story of Cathy Lee's journey back in the realm of what she calls the Bliss Zone. In her totally entertaining, yet heartfelt account of how her life forced her out of the "march" of reality, and into that magical place we all knew as children where pure energy, creativity, and joy abound, and where "coincidences" open up a whole new world of possibility in each and every moment. With grace, humor, and courage, she re-ignites, step-by-step, the magnificence of who we really are.
Let the Magic Begin chronicles Cathy Lee's remarkable adventure back into the "magic" of her life, and her story will passionately compel readers to begin living lives filled with what they had only thought were in their dreams.
Customer Reviews:
trite spirituality from the "Where is she now?" file.......2001-07-09
This book is mainly interesting to those who wonder "Whatever became of that star from TV's That's Incredible?" As this autobiography (of sorts) indicates, she hit rock bottom. Bankruptcy, sued by her former lover, career going nowhere.
She then tells us how she recovered through discovering a "spiritual path." Talked to shamans and such. Began eating health food from Trader Joe's. She includes recommended food at the back of the book, including brand names.
She drops lots of celebrity names to let us know how "connected" she is to Hollywood. She dishes no dirt on anyone. Nothing juicy in this book. This is no "tell all," but rather her calling card to get back in the business.
I was a fan of That's Incredible, so I bought the book. Reading it, I ended liking her more, and respecting her less. She seems a nice person, but real flakey. Typical Hollywood personality.
If you enjoyed That's Incredible, and wonder whatever became of its star, you may enjoy this book.
Magic Begins With Perception...........2000-01-07
It's been awhile since I've read Cathy Lee Crosby's book, but when I finished it I recommended it to friends "in need" and they loved it, too. I want to recommend it to you.
I've rated "Let the Magic Begin" with five stars because it is an inspiring story of a woman on a magical journey...if I had not believed that the events had happened as magically as they seemed to, perhaps I would have rated it lower, but I have seen the power of "coincidence" in my own life enough to know that there is no such thing! As Cathy clearly points out in the course of her story, perception is the key to the magic of life. First you must believe to make the magic work!
Read this book if you feel there is something undefinable missing in your life. Read it if you want to stop making the same mistakes over and over again. Absolutely read it if you feel you have an insurmountable problem. Read it if you'd like to become a healthier person...read it if you like people.... But most importantly, when you read it, Believe, and the believing will make it so.
Easy Read -- Deep Work.......1998-10-05
Cathy Lee's book is beautifully written. Her journey takes every popular "how-to" book in my library at least one step further, farther, faster. I have been buying copies for everyone I know who's forgotten how to have fun!
Inspirational.......1997-03-26
Cathy Lee's magical journey is an inspiration to all of us. Thak you for sharing your experience with all the other dreamers of the world. Reba McEntir
Help at last........1997-03-23
I've been a suffering Bi-polar most of my adult life and have just come through a five year depressive period. A friend told me about this book and in five weeks I see more and know more about where I'm going and how to get there for the first time in years...if not ever. I love you Cathy Lee for putting down, for us all to read, a way back to the future. Charlie Reinmille
