Book Description

It is the end of the 19th century and Victoria's reign is coming to an end. It is also the end of an era, but no one knows. The landed gentry, so soon to lose their power, are the last to suspect.

Bertha Ley is mistress of Court Ley, a great spread of land. She marries Edward Craddock, a man beneath her station, but quite the essence of new order. A gentleman farmer, he is steady and a doer who turns Court Ley into an efficient farm. But Bertha wants passion and ardor: she gets reality.

"Bertha's tragedy is in her expectations--life would be so simple without them. Her assaults on the amiable Craddock are as rational as beating a flounder for not flying." (Literary Observer)

5 out of 5 stars A Maugham Masterpiece.......2005-07-08

The heroine of this book, starts off as a very confident, quite headstrong girl, pursuing a man beneath her station. For when it comes down to it, Bertha is quite the idealist in love. As the book explains she really has only one way to love, and that's all consumingly. The book delves into her heartbreak once the honeymoon is over, and it becomes clear that her husband is one of those very sensible people, for whom love is quite on the mundane side, instead of the fireworks Bertha imagines, it's a little more like clockwork. She, and her marriage are compared to the rules adherant to livestock in her husbands eyes.

And to exacerbate her isolation is the fact that the town and it's townspeople, see in Edward a good, solid, contributing citizen, a paragon of strength, virtues, and good attributes, and congratulate her on her choice of spouse at every opportunity. She goes through stages, as her bitterness and resentment over Edwards' unchangeable personality as he refuses to give way from his sensible lifestyle in order to accommodate her in the attention that she craves. Of such a different temperment is he, that he is completely unable to understand her needs or feelings, and feels it's for her better good for him to remain that way.

The book takes a turn to compare Edward's non-passionate nature, to an admiring younger cousin who falls in love with her with the same heat and emotion as she has, providing just a small glimpse into a world where her feelings are matched. A pervading sensibility, eventually puts her feelings in check. But that experience lowers some of her expectations, and she comes to regard her marriage with an indifference which is the quality that makes it bearable for her.

The story of an unhappy marriage in the rural countryside doesn't strike one as that compelling of a plot-line, but the way in which it's written is so filled with poignant character observations, you can hardly read three pages in this book without finding a sentence that's deeply accurate and deftly serves up truths on human relationships and different temperments. And it's that introspective quality that makes this book amazing to read.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing for people who like romance and kitsch.......2001-01-05

As a woman you can identify yourself very well with Bertha, but there is a big difference between the social situations. That's exactly what makes this book so special, you see yourself even if the reactions of Bertha are often stupid and wrong you understand what she feels and why she's doing it. You see that maybe in her situation you would have reacted the same way and that makes you thinking About it. There are many little things which tell so much about people's emotions and the situations.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2000-12-22

It's a very interesting book. It shows our feelings very well. It's simple to read. But I think it's more a book for women than for men. Mrs Craddock is an intelligent person and she has married a simple man. In the beginning she is very in love with him. And they are lucky. But later she notices that he is not Mr Right and her life gets boring. She leaves him and meets someone else in Italy.... I can recommend this book to everyone which is interested in love stories. But it's not a simple love story with a happy ending!

5 out of 5 stars A Neglected Masterwork.......2000-10-26

W. Somerset Maugham has long existed somewhat on the periphery of literary and critical respectability: "a first-rate second-rater," someone once called him. But the more I read Maugham the more I become convinced that this is a snobbish appraisal, derived perhaps from his extraordinary popular success (if it's popular, it can't be good) and, later, from revelations regarding his homosexuality along with some unpleasant personal details related by various biographers. But none of this should get in the way of a reader seeking out Maugham's best work---"Of Human Bondage," certainly, and the much-less-known "Mrs. Craddock."

"Mrs. Craddock" is a stunningly powerful novel of one woman's compromises with the realities of love. Reminiscent on the one hand of Flaubert's "Madame Bovary," and on the other of Kate Chopin's "The Awakening," this novel has a vitality and brilliance of characterization all its own. Bertha, the heroine, is superbly rendered: a woman who is unable to understand until too late the nature of her emotional folly, a victim of her own self-imposed romantic delusions. Edward, her husband, is equally compelling: a fundamentally good man who has simply, in essence, married the wrong woman. Watching these two mismatched souls attempting to co-exist is engrossing, painful, and exhilarating. The story is solidly written in the usual Maugham plain style, and is just as relevant today as it must have been the year it was published.

This "lost" Maugham novel---ignored even by many Maugham admirers---deserves a wider readership. Those interested in Maugham's fiction of this period, or in turn-of-the-century novels centered on women, owe it to themselves to try this unjustly neglected masterwork.

5 out of 5 stars Maugham's as usual.......1999-10-14

I'm a huge fan of the work of W. Somerset Maugham and I buy every book from him that catches my eye. Mrs. Craddock was not exception. The story of love and disappointment endured by Bertha Craddock is an odissey on how the women perceptions change when they find that they're not loved in the way they expected. Me, as a male, couldn't help but feel sympathy for her and get angry at the way Bertha's husband snubs her need for love. The end is marvelous and this makes the novel a must read for everyone who's ever been in love. (I guess everyone)

                    5 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful.......2006-01-01

The love stories in this book are filled with much passion.

I read the story about Muirne Raisa to my dying mother. I could tell she was truly enjoying the story, unfortunately it was the last story she had ever heard. It was something that I will always have when I read that story. Thank You Janet Terry.

I of course enjoyed the writer Megan Terry, who's young spirit seems to shine in her female characters. Most are women of stregnth and bravery. They are true role models for today's woman. I look foward to reading more books by her.

This kind of book is a joy not only for the short stories which in today's busy society allow people the chance to read, but the true joy is having wonderful authors presented so well. I hope this review encourages you to get a copy. I'm sure you will enjoy the book.

5 out of 5 stars A GOOD MIX OF STYLES & GENRES IN THIS COLLECTION! GREAT READS!.......2005-09-29

The book is titled correctly; it IS the best collection of short stories I've read in 2005 ... perhaps ever.

The variety was well-chosen and entertained me no end! I'm a busy mother, playing at being a comic and have little time to read long novels, so short stories fill the bill. (Or am I a busy comic, playing at being a mother? LOL.)

Thanks, Ms. Terry and friends for helping me unwind in the shortest time possible.

5 out of 5 stars THESE SHORT STORIES ARE REALLY GOOD!.......2005-06-24

I usually enjoy novels, but lately find myself reading more short stories,
mainly because the hectic pace of the workforce in Silicon Valley leaves little
                    time for reading.

In the case of JUST OUR BEST SHORT STORIES 2005, I'm certainly glad I decided
to get this book. This is the most versatile short-story collection I've
ever read. Among the themes of the stories are: medieval romance, the 1960s, a
true account of a man grieving the death of his beloved wife, an endearing poem
about a dragon-slaying, romantic knight, a dark story about a "death feast,"
                    etc.

It even has a Sci-Fi offering by the author, Janet Sue Terry, that is really
                    exciting.

But I must admit, I started reading it because my mother, author Betty
Dravis, has three of her more satirical stories, dark humor and dark horror, in this
book. Since her two published books are much lighter and more contemporary,
this is a side of her writing that her readers haven't seen yet. I can just
picture her "tongue in her cheek" when she wrote these; she really has a
"warped" sense of humor that's very original and a joy to read.

I'm not prejudiced (of course not!!!), but Mom's short-shorts are really
good, folks ... as are all the stories in this book. There seems to be something
for everyone. If this book is any indication of the skills of the contributing
writers, then each should have bright futures ahead of them.

                    I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars MY AUNT LIKES THESE STORIES.......2005-06-06

Most of these stories are love stories. Ohhhh, gross! But I'm visiting my aunt and forgot my books. She let me read two she says are okay for kids my age.

I liked the story about the SIXTIES and the one about the gingerbread man. It was scary. I like scary stories.

                    I like computers too.
                    Thanks - Andrew

5 out of 5 stars A VERSATILE COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES BY TALENTED WRITERS.......2005-05-20

Author Janet Sue Terry has compiled an eclectic mix of short stories that are certain to please the palette of readers of diverse tastes. Terry titillates our imagination with her offering of medieval love stories about princes and princesses, complete with fire-breathing dragons and exciting adventures.

Megan Blue Terry wrote three stories for this book. My favorite is "Pay Your Marriage Dues," a touching love story of a husband and wife struggling to accept each other's reality.

And if you enjoy a quick, stimulating read, Betty Dravis (that's me) is the writer for you. I can't write much about my own works, of course, so please read my short, satirical stories of dark humor and dark horror, then judge for yourself. I hope they amuse and entertain you, as they're meant to do.

Joe DeChristopher pens a story of love found, love lost, a true story that's a glowing tribute to his late wife ... a story that was very painful for him to write. He also writes a moving tale of a Vietnam veteran who can't let go of "ghosts from the past."

Lori Martin paints a dark tale of death and gloom in the unusual setting of a dining room; a must read for horror fans.

Dan Chatterton takes the reader on a nostalgic trip back to the sixties; boys, girls, parents ... and "muscle" cars, of course.

Daniel Morrison pens a somber story of an overweight boy who has an obsession for a lovely girl in a poster; an intriguing mystery.

And the "diamond in this collection of precious gems" is a love story by Rosanna Filippello. In "Blind Love" she writes of a beautiful broadcast journalist who catches her boyfriend in bed with her best friend; an old storyline that becomes fresh under Filippello's masterful pen. Her twists and turns are so exciting you can't quit reading. A remarkable reading experience, as are all the gems between the covers of this book. So find a comfortable chair, and sit back and enjoy the read."

I received this cookbook as a gift about a year ago. It honestly set on the shelf for months before I really looked at it. I do not read Southern Living magazine and I usually do not like recipes in magazines in general. These recipes are not what you usually see in magazines. All the ones I have tried are very suitable for cooking at home. For the most part the recipes call for everyday ingredients that are easily found in your regular grocery store. It is divided into months of the year, so that's handy for incorporating seasonal produce. I like how recipes are grouped together so all the recipes you would want for a meal are next to each other on the same page. You may like this or not. Another reviewer mentioned that it was hard to find something specific and that is true. However the general index isn't bad as most recipes are listed by their name and their main ingredient. There is also a month-by-month index which seems like a waste of space since it is in the same order as the book itself.

                      3 out of 5 stars Cookbook Lover.......2007-01-10

The recipies in these Southern Living cookbooks are pretty good for the most part, but the organization is a disaster. No sections for types of recipies, such as cakes, vegetables, meat, they just put it all together in "menus" which you then have to read through to find anything. Too much work, its almost an accident when I actually find what I'm looking for. I'm glad I bought them used so that the price was about right for what they are.

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Cookbook.......2007-01-04

This cookbook has pretty much anything one would want to prepare. I have not cooked much from it yet, but the recipes look easy enough. The 2005 magazines had so many wonderful recipes, and I love how this book compiles all of them!

Where else can you find so many recipes all carefully tested in the Southern Living Test Kitchens in Birmingham? This annual volume collects the best recipes from a year's worth of magazines. It's a great collection in a kitchen-friendly format. Of course we especially liked the Thanksgiving recipes excerpted from our own book, "Three Guys From Miami Cook Cuban."

Southern American regional cooking at its best and a nice gift for anyone who loves great food...

Chef Christopher Kump's cooking ranges from mashed-potatoes homey to black-truffle haute. Thanks to Evening Food, you can enjoy both sides of the intensely flavorful dishes he serves without trekking to Cafe Beaujolais in Mendocino, California, where he works his magic. For a cozy dinner menu, serve Roasted Eggplant Tapenade Tart, followed by Roast Chicken with creamy Fish Ginger Sauce accompanied by Chive Mashed Potatoes, then finish with the nut-topped Pear and Apple Crisp. For a feast with luxe, Kump might recommend Sautéed Duck Foie Gras with Garlic Confit Purée, Oven-steamed Salmon Filet with Fresh Herb Sabayon Sauce (whose lemongrass seasoning gives new life to a classic), and his surprising Lemon-Chocolate Mousse for dessert.

In addition to the collection of mouthwatering recipes, Kump and Margaret Fox, Kump's wife and owner of Cafe Beaujolais, chat about their life, share anecdotes about the dishes, and provide information about ingredients and cooking techniques, such as how to remove pesky pin bones from a salmon filet using tweezers. Black-and-white photos illustrate the attraction of this little restaurant with world-class food, located in a remote, New-England-on-the-Pacific town. --Dana Jacobi

Throughout the book, the author stresses that he didn't have room for his very best recipes, but that, for $20 (I think) you can order them from him. I tried to, but the address cited was that of Cafe Beaujolais, and they replied with "Sorry, he moved." They won't even forward such mail. So it was a total waste. There are tons of great cookbooks on the market; purchase those that try to include their best recipes.

Coming from quite a pedigree (son of Peter Kump and having worked with the likes of Robuchonn and Jacques Cagna) the young chef is hired and then marries the ownder of Cafe Beujolais.

Margaret Fox has produced books on this restaurants Morning Food and another, and here collaborates with her chef/husband on Evening Recipes.

Organized into classic dining sequence of Appetizers to Desserts, there are some good recipes in here to try: Buckwheat Hazelnut Bread; Toasted Goat Cheese Salad; Pear and Apple Crisp; Bittersweet Chocolate Raspberry Milefeuilles; and a Roast Cornish Hen with Apricot Marsala Sauce that is superb!

What I enjoy about this is the sidebar discussion that accompanies each recipe. Here is told about its development, technique, tips, etc.

This is the finest book available on Cauldon, bar none. The pricing guides are helpful, the background information facinating, and although the photographs are sometimes a little out of focus, each page features multiple images of representative wares.

Quite simply the best reference work currently available on the output of Cauldon Ltd. and its predecessors and sucessors for over a century including helpful pricing guides. Because Cauldon's tableware patterns alone ran to several tens of thousands, this book could not be expected to address individually all of the company's products, but it does cover a broad enough sampling to make it the definitive work on its subject matter. Kudos to Robert Cluett for giving us this book.

Boris is an exciting, fully controllable, and low cost robot that is featured in the Muscle Wires Project Book. It moves with an amazingly smooth and lifelike action, taking steps about one centimeter long and one centimeter high. Boris' simple design uses eight separate Muscle Wires to create all motions; one to make the forward/backward motion on each of the legs, and two wires for lifting alternating legs with each step. Build Boris from piano wire, balsa wood or foam core and plastic sheet. Connect Boris to an interface circuit that accepts signals from your PC's printer port, then operate it from the computer's keyboard!

The Muscle Wires Project Book is more than just an instruction manual for building Boris. Other topics include: Basic lever action, ratchets and latches, model railroad crossing, AC power circuit, solar power circuit, paper airplane launcher, life-like butterfly, rubber tube "flexi", proportional control, radio control interface, programmable multiple wire controller & serial port interface, PC parallel port interface and much more.

                                Book Description

3deluxe, an interdisciplinary design collective of communications (3deluxe graphics) and interior (3deluxe interior) designers, define their approach as such "We treat graphic design like architecture and architecture like graphic design".

Somewhere between popular culture and applied arts, between surface and space, the advantages of this reciprocal inspiration become obvious, clearly showing in their graphic and product design for fashion, music and sports (Visionaire, Fanatic Boards), exhibitions, spatial productions (SCAPE youth and media pavilion at the Expo 2000), trade fair stands (Volkswagen, MTV), themed entertainment or architectural projects.

Often deconstructionist in nature the (interior) design projects display a fundamental interest in the painstaking exploration of new techniques and materials, conceptual consolidation and clarity. From the sensitive combination of flexible, almost weightless materials and carefully honed lighting scenarios 3deluxe fashion amorphous, elastic, bionic hitech objects and spaces, illustrating the perfect interaction of two- and three-dimensional spatial concepts and design.

At the same time 3deluxe graphics are orderly and clean without being sterile, boring or trend-conscious. This also becomes clear in the structure of "projects", their first book, which introduces their most significant projects.

The luxurious volume depicts and describes graphics, spatial situations and exhibits in a way that allows a simultaneously intellectual and sensual reception.

                                      Book Description

Witty and sophisticated, a brilliant dramatist and a charismatic actor, the multitalented Noël Coward was one of the most colorful personalities who ever strode across the stage. These diaries chronicle the last 30 years of his life, from his wartime concert tours through his private and professional depression in the 1950s to his triumphant reemergence and knighthood in the 1960s and '70s. "Compulsive reading...what Coward has to say about other people is light-hearted, witty, often shrewd, totally without malice...his final entertainment for everyone's pleasure are these diaries." --Sunday Times. "A constant delight. A goldmine of gossip with a cast of a thousand stars."

5 out of 5 stars Every Year At Christmas....Noel Coward!!!.......2003-12-07

Virtually every person I know has a favorite Christmas tradition, an activity that they perform every year that is theirs and theirs alone, and that sums up the Christmas spirit of peace, good will, and love. For my own tradition, every year at this time, I reread this wonderful book. Why, you may ask? Well, I'll do my best to explain. I received this book as a Christmas present from a dear friend when it was first published in 1982. It quickly became my favorite book, and I find that it both inspires and delights me with every new reread. I was an actor and theatre person for many years, just long enough to discover one truth about Sir Noel Coward: This stylish and elegant man, actor, singer, playwright par excellence, and all around bon vivant, simply knew more about life in general and the theatre in particular than any other person I've ever encountered. Whether dealing with stubborn, recalcitrant actresses who refuse to wear their hair properly (i.e. Mary Martin), or facing the loss of a livelong confidant (his personal secretary, Lorn Loraine), Coward's show of sheer courage, strength, and determination in facing the everyday stresses and strains of life, and with considerable humor and great goodwill, seems to me the essence of the Christmas (and, by extension, the human) spirit. Organized in chapters by the years the diary entries were made (1945 to 1969, with a prologue that covers the World War II years as one section), the book is a very relaxed and enjoyable read (usually, a chapter a night works well), and covers the time period of the years following his initial successes (by the time the entries begin, Coward had already written his best known works: Private Lives, Desigh for Living, Hay Fever, and Blithe Spirit) through the 1950's and the years of abuse at the hands of narrow-minded critics (who considered him too "shallow" and "commercial"), and on through the 1960's and his renaissance period (when many of those same critics found his plays fashionable once again). Through it all, the successes, tragedies and failures, the many, many encounters with the rich and famous (Coward knew virtually every famous person of his day and counted many as lifelong friends), and most of all, the wit and wisdom of one of the most fascinating persons of our time will keep the devoted reader enthralled for all 700 plus pages. I could say much more about The Noel Coward Diaries, but a hundred reviews could not contain it all, so I will close by saying please make this book a present for yourself (and/or someone you love). Trust me, it will be one of the wittiest, most delightful, and truly Merriest Christmases you have ever spent!!!
