A Funny Book With An Unusual Narrator.......2005-02-23
This is an excellent -- and funny -- book with an unusual narrator. He has a quirky voice and a quirky perspective on life, which you come to understand as you reach the 2/3 mark of the book. You will laugh out loud at the same time you feel a great deal of sympathy for the narrator. I look forward to the author's next book.
For the "special" reader.......2005-02-20
This story is about Hamilton Ashe, borderline retarded, and his daily struggles. For example (p103),
"One day I'm at work, and 'One O'Clock Jump' is playing on
the radio. It's a Benny goodman song. I'm repairing the
waistband on a pair of slacks for a man named Grimaldi. It's
not as easy as it might seem. First, you have to pin the
waistband, then turn it up and press it. Then you have to
grade the seam to elimainate the bulk. After you've done
that, you have to fold the waistband inside out and trim the
corners. Then you turn it right side out again, clip it and
tuck the seam allowance, then fold the clipped corner under
at an angle. When you 're done with that, you have to pin the
edge in place and stitch in the ditch of the waistline seam.
It's not easy work..."
Ashe doesn't grow, doesn't learn from experience, doesn't get any smarter. It's a dismal, boring, uninteresting tale, unless perhaps you too are "special".
A Thought-Provoking Book.......2004-08-24
Hmm. I hadn't heard of this author before, but was taken by the Dr. Seussian-looking title lettering. I ended up being very pleasantly surprised. Putting aside the humor that everyone else has noted -- and, yes, it is laugh-out-loud funny -- the book is actually a meditation on the the truthfulness of fiction. Toward the end of the book, when you realize the narrator may not have told you the truth about his girlfriend as a way to make himself feel better, you find yourself having to reassess everything you've read. And you'll look differently at everything you read in the future. Based on this, I'm going to run out and pick up the author's other novels. His is a very unusual voice that deserves to be heard.
Laugh Out Loud.......2004-08-17
I thoroughly enjoyed My Wife and My Dead Wife. After reading The Lochlear Letters I should have expected another humorous perspective on life. The characters were real and full of heart while the storyline remained interesting. I think Mike Kun has a big future as a great author! I look forward to reading his next book.
Contemporary Fiction at Its Best.......2004-08-07
That last reviewer not only doesn't know what he's talking about, but a quick look at his profile tells you all you need to know about his vituperative review -- he's a lawyer who's jealous of Kun's legal and writing careers. How sad. Take the word of the other reviewers who loved "The Locklear Letters" and "My Wife and My Dead Wife" -- this is contemporary fiction at its very best. Well-written, yet easy to read. Funny, but not simplistic. Touching, yet not sappy. Kun is the real deal. He needs to quit practicing law and write more books like these. And get a new publicist so people will hear about them!

First.......2000-05-23
"The Other Side of the Mirror" is an enjoyable anthology. It contains many stories that could have happened in Darkover. the stories span times from the beginning to the time of Margret Alton. Sometimes the stories are slightly wacky while at others they fit almost seamlessly with the books already in print. I especially enjoyed the last story, I hope that you will too.

Although Enrique Anderson Imbert is little known in this country, he is recognized in Latin America as a writer of great talent. This collection of his short stories, translated from his El grimorio, is a blend of the fantastic and the real. Isabel Reade has translated the book to share the imaginative, often nonrealistic, philosophical, or poetic stories with all readers, but the book is of special consequence to aficionados of Latin American writing and to persons interested in experiments with techniques and themes in literature.

Book Description
Letters from the Flesh, the second book by new SF novelist Marcos Donnelly, sets a breathtaking pace, tackling far-reaching themes like evolution, fundamentalism, quantum realities, and the very core of human nature. The novel is a fictional collection of two sets of letters united by a single secret, but separated by two thousand years: - the first-century epistles of a non-physical alien entrapped in the body of St. Paul the Apostle, accidentally triggering the birth of Christianity; - the emails of microbiologist Dr. Lillian Oberland, a young college adjunct writing to her cousin Michael, a public school biology teacher facing the wrath of Creationist parents. The letters reveal a relationship far deeper than passing coincidences-and signal that cousin Michael's unexpected conversion to fundamentalism might have interspecies consequences that cross the millennia.

Delightful little Epistle for us sinners of Corinth :).......2006-09-14
I just got a copy of this and it's awesome. A warning, though. This is not a book for the close minded. There are things in this book that will make you THINK. There are those who might even go so far as to call it Blasphemous. If you use the word Blasphemous or don't like to think, I suggest you don't read this. It will only give you a headache. Everyone else - Let's proceed.
It's written on the model of "The Screwtape Letters" until toward the end, where the similarity fades. I got the impression reading this that Mr. Donnelly was channeling Lewis as he wrote, and that CS Lewis had either gone insane in the afterlife or had some ephiphany and in a most entertaining an fulfilling manner.
The Characters are well developed as people. Lillian was deliciously demonic in tone and Luke, my favorite character sounded like someone I had met before, some real flesh and blood person not a character in a book.
The story is concise and well executed, the timing excellent and the plot engaging. The ending took my breath away. Literally. I found a few parts of it confusing, as this book is much more philisophical in my opinion. I can't really explain that, and I suppose it's Lewis' form. If you've read his stuff, you feel like your being taught something subliminally and your wiser at the end for it, but not really sure how or what. Same here. That being said, it is still incredibly entertaining.
I usually don't read fiction, but this I devoured in about 2 hours and couldn't put it down. I can't rave enough about this and am recommending it to everyone I know.
So, what are you waiting for. Buy the book. Trust me, I'm never wrong about these things. :)
Completely Different.......2005-12-13
'Letters from the Flesh' is the most different SF novel I've read in years. It is full of surprises, and I'm still thinking about it months after reading it. For me, these are very good things.
Very clever; a fitting debut for Rob Sawyer's new logo.......2004-07-25
This book started a bit slow, as the author set the context in perhaps too much detail, but is well worth perseverance. As the complexities grew, I feared that the author would fall into a common SF weakness of an abrupt, elaborate and unconvincing ending. Fear not; the ends are tied up neatly, and despite a playfulness that may offend some readers, cleverly leaves an opening for (broadminded) Christian beliefs.
Althought this could hardly be called a conventional novel with conventional pot or characters, Donnelly evokes interest in and sympathy for the characters, to the point where I let out a fervent "Oh, no!" at one plot twist.
This book would be excellent fodder for a discussion group.
PS A tip for Donnelly: The consistent repetition of Lilian's annoying e-mail salutation is NOT one of the highlights of the book!
What If?.......2004-07-14
This tale sets a new dimension in science fiction and examines what we think we know about our past, present, and future. Kudos to Marcos Donnelly for giving us a very interesting and original story.
Another excellent read.......2004-06-23
It's always a pleasure reading new fiction from Marcos Donnelly and his latest contribution to the SF world is no exception. Following the religious explorations of his first novel (as well as a number of his shorter pieces), Donnelly now turns the reader's eye to the conflict/tensions between science and religion -- in this case, Creationism and evolution -- while paying an endearing homage to C.S. Lewis' THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS in the process.
The book tells its tale through two sets of seemingly unconnected letters: One set from Dr. Lillian Uberland, a biology professor, to her sometimes bull-headed cousin Michael, and the other from Paul of Tarsus (after a fashion) shortly after his conversion on the road to Damascus two thousand years earlier. What emerges from these alternating storylines, apart from brilliant plotting and characterization, is an unrelenting examination of the passions of belief that is certainly refreshing to find in SF, much less the wider world of mainstream fiction.
Intelligent, engrossing, and blazingly (and brazenly) hilarious in parts, LETTERS FROM THE FLESH is a wonderful read through-and-through, and most assuredly does not disappoint.

The first Moosewood Cookbook--loved for its cozy, comforting food--mused oil, eggs, and dairy products so lavishly that it was extensively revised in 1992 to fit our changing diet. Now, the Moosewood Collective takes an even more extreme step: recipes in
Moosewood Restaurant Low-Fat Favorites are so intentionally healthful that they put the word right on the cover of this chubby book filled with lean recipes (many dishes get the fat down to a modest 16-17% of their total calories). Still, the 280-plus recipes offer the bold, pan-ethnic flavors that have won the Moosewood Collective cookbooks so many fans.
Book Description
This is the low-fat book cooks who care about wholesome, vegetarian-inspired food have been waiting for. Each of the more than 280 recipes are as delicious and trustworthy as those in the Moosewood Collective's previous books, and vibrant flavors and generous portions are still a hallmark of every dish. Because the Collective's primary goal is always to make great tasting food they resisted the notion of doing a low-fat book until they were convinced they could make low-fat dishes as flavor-packed as their regular favorites. "We've mostly been interested in gourmet cuisine at Moosewood Restaurant, not deprivation diet food," say the authors. "So, it's a happy surprise that the dishes we created for this cookbook don't come off as merely healthful diet foods. The food is exciting, ethnically diverse, and satisfyingly delicious. Moosewood Restaurant Low-fat Favorites is as much a celebration of the pleasures of eating as it is about low-fat cooking."
In Moosewood Restaurant Low-fat Favorites the Collective emphasizes a few changes in basic cooking techniques to apply to everyday recipes and they offer tips and ideas for sustaining a low-fat lifestyle. They bake rather than fry, replace high-fat ingredients with healthy substitutes (no artificial ingredients allowed!), and use butter and oil very moderately. What is lost in fat is gained in bold, intense flavors. "When fashioning low-fat recipes, taking a nip here, a tuck there, we sometimes need to add a little embroidery, an embellishment such as extra herbs, spices, fruit or vegetable purée, vinegar, sun-dried tomatoes, dried mushrooms, miso, soy sauce, or garlic," explain the cooks at Moosewood Restaurant. "Our gingerbread gets extra flavor and moisture from chunks of pear rather than from butter and egg yolks. Two small calamata olives enliven the Caesar Salad Dressing. A little sauerkraut adds interest to an Italian mushroom stew."
Fat will not be missed in mouthwatering recipes like Guacamole with Asparagus, Chinese Orzo Vegetable Salad, Spring Vegetable Paella, Indian Potato Pancakes, and Creamy Dairyless Rice Pudding. Along with those creative dishes, one of the most appealing parts of Moosewood Restaurant Low-fat Favorites is finding low-fat variations on familiar favorites such as Macaroni and Cheese, Shephard's Pie, and Dark Chocolate Pudding. An added bonus is that the Moosewood Collective has made sure that the ingredients used in the recipes throughout the book are very accessible--easily found in most well-stocked supermarkets.
In the nutritional, glossary, and guide sections of Moosewood Restaurant Low-fat Favorites the Collective gives explanations of nutritional terms, instructions for how to glean the information you need from nutrition labels, a brief overview of vitamins and minerals, and guides to ingredients and cooking techniques. These three important sections, combined with the deliciously appetizing recipes, are a wealth of encouragement for low-fat eating and living a healthy lifestyle. The fourteen chapters range from savory soups and main course salads to creative side dishes and aromatic Mediterranean and Asian-inspired dishes. With chapters which range from healthy breakfasts and lunch foods to a collection of fish recipes and more than twenty truly delectable desserts, Moosewood Restaurant Low-fat Favorites is sure to set the kitchen standard not only for health-conscious cooks, but also for those who have come to rely on the Moosewood Collective's easy, earthy approach to cooking.
Customer Reviews:
My favorite from Moosewood!.......2007-09-24
The recipes in "Low-Fat Favorites" aren't time-consuming to prepare like the classic Moosewood recipes, making them more weeknight friendly. There are many "tricks" to make a dish seem creamy or cheesy without adding any cream or cheese -- all satisfaction, no fat!
I made Roasted Vegetables Caribbean Style for a potluck the other night to rave reviews. It was easy to prepare and SO good (page 227).
The "Menu Suggestions" feature and the indication of time the recipe takes to prepare are great for planning family dinners or dinner parties, and are included with each recipe.
One of the best.......2007-08-21
This is one of my favourite vegetarian cookbooks. I've had this book for 10 years and have probably used it more than any other book I own.
I've had a high success rate with the recipes (I've made about 50 of them) and have only had a couple of disappointments. The menu suggestions are very helpful and make it easy to plan a more elaborate meal. Numerous times I have served meals from this book to meat-eater friends and the food has always been very well received.
Many of the recipes are quick to prepare and are suitable for everyday. Some of my favourites are: Middle Eastern Chickpeas with Spinach, Pasta with Lentils and Artichoke Hearts, Mushroom and Spinach Fritatta, Pasta with Chickpeas, Tabouli, and Thai Vegetable Curry.
Even satisfies a meat-eater!.......2007-08-21
Everything I have cooked from the book has been exceptional. And most recipies are quite easy as well. I now always turn to this cookbook first when planning dinner, because I know it will be delicious!! Even my meat-eating boyfriend thinks all the meals from this book are fabulous!
You really can't go wrong with this one.
Yummy.......2007-07-22
I had the opportunity to eat at Moosewood recently and picked up the book shortly after. I'm not a vegetarian and was skeptical about recreating the lasagne recipe. Wow; it turned out great! Looking forward to trying more recipes. The only reason this book doesn't get a 5 is because it's difficult to hold the pages open when cooking; it would do better as a spiral binding.
Amazing!.......2007-06-25
This is the cookbook that first got me interested in cooking. I love the Moosewood restaurant and I love this cookbook. I own other Moosewood cookbooks and this is my favorite! The best cookbook ever!

Customer Reviews:
Witty combination of good humor and wealth of culinary information........2006-11-11
Totally hilarious! As a serious Foodie, I enjoyed reading the anecdotes of the gastronomical meals that the private chef passionately prepared for his ungrateful employers. I was constantly laughing hysterically at the author's interaction with his jealous co-workers and the uptight Mr. & Mrs. B. I didn't realize until the end that this book is all fiction since the author was so clever in his writing and storytelling.
This book is definitely a witty combination of good humor and wealth of culinary information. I would give it as a gift to friends who love good food and could use a good laugh!
It's Like The Nanny Diaries, but better!.......2005-08-17
I purchased this book on a whim when I was at the Jersey shore... this nice man was selling them at a show and so I figured what the heck, I'll support a local author. I am so glad I did. I read it in 3 days. It was a very funny and at times shocking account of how the super-wealthy can be such abusive jerks to the "hired help." I hope they make it into a movie. It includes some great recipes which I plan on trying out too.

Customer Reviews:
Just got done reading it.......2003-03-28
The book is well written and discusses the basics of body language. The beginning chapters are broken down into different areas: Head movement, eye contact, body positioning, tone of voice, ect....ect....ect....
You get the drift. It's slow at first, but worth reading. Its good to have a true basics under your belt before trying to uderstand the advanced psychology of people. The last 2-3 chapters put it all together. He even has tests you can perform to see for yourself why people do what they do.
I would recommend this book as a good first read on the subject. It doesn't get too detailed that it looses you.
A good place to start.......2002-11-27
I found Wainwright clearly an authority. His book is quite well organized. He goes into quite some detail for a book well under two hundred pages. How refreshing after suffering through all the fluff other authors proffer. It is not an easy read, but as long as you don't attempt to consume it all in one sitting, I suspect you will find it well worth the price of the book.
On the downside, Wainwright does not seem particularly comfortable with the Exercises he asks his readers to perform. I would not be surprised if this "exercise" requirement was foisted upon him as a editorial imperative of the "teach yourself" series (his publisher).
A good book of basic information.......2002-11-17
I used this book to help supplement a class I was teaching on interview techniques. This was a great supplement, and it was easy to use. I've made the book a "featured selection" for my class, and encourage anyone wanting to learn the basics of body langauge to check this one out.
Written for third graders.......2002-10-29
This book should have never been published. It is the most elementary and basic book about body language that includes no original insight or revelation about non-verbal communication. The third party research the writer performed was so perfunctory and basic that it provided little-to-no value. Two thumbs way, way down.
Body language matters.......2002-10-15
Body language definitely matters, & this book is dead on. Unfortunately, I was looking for something more related to dating & thus was more satisfired w/ the traditional How to Succeed w/ Women & Make Every Girl Want You: How to Have Sex with Hot Girls without even dating them.

hater.......2006-02-19
it is so bad
i hate it because i cant find certin things
not very creative.......2002-12-15
With the word creative in the title I was expecting a more original style of decorating, or at least a broader range of styles. Instead, the style of this book is primarily tradional/cosmopolitan. I do not like that style, so that is probably why I don't like this book. I found it rather boring. The photos are not too bad, but nothing special. I have to admit I was too turned off by the photos to bother reading much of the text, so perhaps the written information would be more useful to people, but I doubt it. Two other definitely more useful books would be The Kitchen Planner and Better Homes and Gardens Complete Kitchens. I reccomend that you skip this book.
Creative Home Design: Rooms for Everyday Living.......2000-06-27
This book is a wonderful design book. The photos are inspiring and show a broad range of modern and welcoming styles. The text accompanying them is very straightforward and details what limitations or problems the design overcame. It is difficult to imagine that the rooms will become dated - they appear to be very fresh, sensuous and appealing. I was able to take some ideas from various rooms and incorporate into my place. This book is very inspirational and allows one to view work of top designers and architects not readily accessible to the public.

Customer Reviews:
a useful "look book", plain and simple.......2002-08-14
This book functions like a juried group exhibition catalogue, but with better production values. It presents broad sampling of contemporary prints culled from a group of slide entries, which accounts for some of the odd inclusions as well as exclusions. Despite the misleading title (which the publisher seems to have retained to match a "best of watercolor" series or something), the book nevertheless presents work by artists who print their own images as well as those that utilize master printing services. Although clearly not international, comprehensive, nor selective enough, this book helps bring greater visibility to contemporary printmaking.
An essential book for printers.......2001-12-17
The title is slightly misleading. As the majority of the artwork is from the western world. This having been said, I find it to be one of the few art books I will pick up on a frequent basis. It's greatest asset is to the Fine Art Printer. Each print has a short but comprehensive description of the processes used to achive the print. Occasionally it mentions the papers that were used. The prints also have a mercifully succinct description of the subject of each piece. It is a boon for Printers and Printmakers alike. The small pictures and lack of verbage mean that it does not work well as a coffee-table book or have much intrest to people outside of the printmaking realm.
Good on form, not so good on content........2001-01-31
This book, like few others, shows a variety of contemporary prints in color. I find it inspiring to see how people use the medium for effect. If you are a printmaker, I'd recommend the book for that reason. A lot of the art featured is the kind you might find in "American Artist" magazine, rather than "Art in America" for instance. Some of it is very amateur. The text which describes each print, and the meaning of its artistic statement, is often stupefying, and reads like the fluff filler in interior design books. The price is right compared to exhibition catalogs.
Not a serious survey of international printmaking.......1999-09-16
I have long looked outside the US for great contemporary printmaking, so when I found this book I was really excited. What a disappointment! The book is dominated by North Americans while nearly ignoring the rest of the world. The real world of printmaking is almost the reverse - there is so much more going on in printmaking outside the U.S. than within it. Merely being a teacher/friend/colleague of the editor does not make someone an important artist. Being an art professor does not make someone an important artist. Nearly the entire printmaking faculty from one editor's alma mater is included! This is not a serious survey; it is a small step above coffee table book with an astonishingly pretentious title. There needs to be a serious survey of international contemporary printmaking, but sadly this isn't it.
Printmaking on the cutting edge........1999-08-19
I agree with other readers that the term "Internation collection" is a misnomer, however, the content of the book is on the cutting edge of printmaking today. Abstract work in printmaking is highly experimental, controversial, and above all, necessary for the advancement of the medium. Also, the terminology used in the book is common knowledge to anyone in the know of the world of printmaking. I enjoy this book very much and have placed it among my special collection of art books.
