5 out of 5 stars Charming, delightful, beyond comparison........1998-08-24

I'm assuming this is the book I think it is (don't have my old English copy in front of me), but if it includes the story of a dog named Jim, get it. This amazing story (which also explains how dogs asked God to create Man) is at turns folklike, charming, sweet, and transcendent. Capek is an author who could not be published today: for how could you classify him? Only one way: as himself, Karel Capek.

Book Description

After their final battle, legend tells us, Arthur and his knights went to Lyonesse, the land under the sea. Now Lyonesse is threatened by a resurgence of the Dark Powers, those mindless malevolent forces that struggle to stop the course of History.

And Jim Eckert--the Dragon Knight--and his friends are called upon to stop them.

Arthur and his knights are proud, too; too proud to easily accept help from Jim Eckert and his allies. But they will have help--from Jim in his dragon form, from knight-in-armor Sir Brian Neville-Smyth, from the brilliant archer Dafydd ap Hywel, and from one small hobgoblin.

The result is a wild ride: Arthurian fantasy adventure as only Gordon R. Dickson could tell it.

5 out of 5 stars Have you ever wondered..........2001-09-23

Dickson has developed a series of books that allows the reader of today to say what if...? This unique viewpoint allows for the writer to put a 21st century spin on a classic fantasy novel. Characters are real in a fatastic world. This particular book puts Jim the Dragon Knight in the world of King Arthur.

An enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite of the series.......2000-09-22

This is a new adventure that differs greatly from the rest in the series. Even if you have disliked the rest of the series you will surely enjoy this one. The dragon knight returns to Lyonesse but has a completely different battle at hand. What makes this book so exciting is the involvement of the real knights of old like Pellinor, Galahad, and more. This excellent book involves Jim, Daffyd, Brian, and Hob of the main characters but even better is the involment from the Arthurian knights. The story goes that Jim has once again become involved in a battle with the dark powers. The difference is that the dark powers have also recruted some of those from the Arthurian legend. This book is sure to please any who has read this far into the series and even those who just want to read this single book. Dickson has written a standout book in his famous series and this is deffinatly it.

5 out of 5 stars What fun! Things are starting to move!.......1999-10-30

A lot of people seem to have some problem with this book, but frankly, I thought it was a change of pace. Jim is still utterly himself, but he's starting to get comfortable with who and what he is. He came in contact with the greatest knights of all time, and held his own by doing things on his own terms. What I'm looking forward to is how he handles the greatest challenge of all - fatherhood. I can't wait to see how Dickson has his dragon knight cope with being "Daddy" to his adopted mideveil son. I'm sure both author and character will rise to the occaision.

4 out of 5 stars geting boring.................1999-10-15

I mean, dont get me wrong, I liked the book but you eventually have to get tired of the same thing with the "dark powers" and Jim(main character) finding a way out of the situation, I just hope in the next book that something big will happen like new characters or old characters dieing, I hope Gordon R. Dickson sees this....

4 out of 5 stars The series might drag-on..........1999-10-06

Each book in the Dragon Knight series is pretty decent by itself, and I've enjoyed every single one of them, but in my opinion, the series needs some rejuvenation...

Time after time, has the Baron James been discovering through someone that the Dark Powers once again 'interfere' amok, and time after time has James been finding some miraculous solution. I have no problems with this as a basis for each book, it's just that it has been written the same way each time, perhaps with a few new characters and some backdrops. The highlights of the series, aside from the first book, have been where Jim has been doing something unusual with magick, fighting a battle, or existing as a dragon.

In my opinion, an expansion of these highlights in the next book would be welcome. Perhaps about the formation of a treaty between England and the local dragons...humans with other opinions building one force, and even dragons who do not wish to be involved with 'georges' forming their own group. This would call for James to switch in and out of dragon form alot, and for, perhaps, an emergence of the mere dragons, lead by Secoh!

Oh, well...we'll see what comes up.

Awaiting the next book,

Hypogryph

      Book Description

“The Shadow out of Time” is H. P. Lovecraft’s last major story, written in a four-month period from November 1934 to February 1935. It was first published in Astounding Stories for June 1936. And yet, this text has never been published as Lovecraft wrote it – until now. The recent discovery of Lovecraft’s handwritten manuscript allows readers to appreciate this magnificently cosmic story exactly as originally written. All previous editions of the story contain hundreds of serious errors, including errors in paragraphing, omissions and mistranscriptions of many words and passages, and erroneous punctuation. But now, the breathtaking scope of this novella – the story of the Great Race’s conquest of time and space by means of mind-projection, and the hapless fate of Professor Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee as a victim of the Great Race’s quest for all the secrets of the universe – can, for the first time, be fully understood. Leading Lovecraft scholars S. T. Joshi and David E. Schultz have provided an exhaustive introduction and commentary on the story, elucidating names, places, and other elements in this richly evocative story. A must for all devotees of Lovecraft and weird fiction.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2006-10-05

When Professor Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee is seized by a sudden mental transformation, the psychologists diagnose it as the advent of a second personality. But, it is a strange personality, interested in dark and forbidden occult studies. And when Professor Peaslee returns to his own mind, some six years later, he must pick up the pieces of his shattered life.

However, when dark dreams begin to haunt him, dreams that take the form of impossible memories, Prof. Peaslee begins to study himself, so that he can shake off these strange pseudo-memories. However, when archaeologists discover a ruin in the Australian Outback, a ruin of impossible antiquity, Prof. Peaslee's memories begin to haunt him all the more.

This is the first Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) book that I have ever read, and I must say that I am quite impressed. The author did an excellent job of creating and sustaining in the reader the horror that the main character felt throughout his adventure. Pretty much all my life I have heard of H.P. Lovecraft and his horror stories, and I found this one to be a great book to read. I really enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Valueable for Any Lovecraft Fan.......2006-02-05

While this story wouldn't be the entree I'd recommend to Lovecraft, it is definitely one of his major works. And this edition is worth reading for the beginning and hardcore fan.

The editors' introduction details how long Lovecraft had been considering this story, his inspirations, and how he, as before his great creative year of 1927, undertook a reading program to sharpen his style and improve his writing before starting it, his most science-fictional, tale. They also offer some intriguing observations about the specific dates in protagonist Peaslee's life and their significance to Lovecraft's.

As to the annotations, it's not the largely unnecessary vocabulary lessons that Joshi and Schultz offer that are valueable, but how they point out similarities in motifs and language to other Lovecraft works, specific factual sources Lovecraft used, and the many links between this and other Cthulhu Mythos stories of Lovecraft and his friends. Even fans who have read this story more than once will probably learn something new in these notes.

I can't say as I noticed any difference between the corrected text and earlier versions of the story, but then I didn't look at the appendix showing all the textual variations. But it's there for the really hardcore Lovecraft fan and scholar.

4 out of 5 stars Dreams or reality?.......2002-09-27

Professor N. W. Peaslee, from 1908 to 1913, suffered a form of amnesia or did he? After waking up he stuffers from dreams of an other time, in a city built before history and a race of creatures long gone. Is he going mad or is it real? The answer can be found in Australia, where in one of the deserts explorers have found ruins over 150,000,000 years old. The question is, does he WANT to find the answer or not?

If you liked 'At The Mountains of Madness' you should enjoy this book AND already know what the answers are!

      5 out of 5 stars A must-have for Lovecraft fans.......2002-02-16

"The Shadow Out of Time" is one of Lovecraft's finest tales, and this version is a collector-quality edition. The story itself is found in many Lovecraft anthologies, including an excellent presentation in Arkham House's "The Dunwich Horror and Others." However, there are many features that mark this volume as the definitive edition of "The Shadow Out of Time."

The corrected text from a recently discovered manuscript is the highlight. This is the tale as Lovecraft envisioned it. Anyone familiar with "The Annotated H.P. Lovecraft" will appreciate S.T. Joshi's meticulous notes and annotations. He adds another layer of insight to these familiar stories.

My favorite feature, however, is the restoration of the pulp cover from Astounding Stories 6-36 where the story first appeared. It is nice to see the pulp roots of H.P. Lovecraft being honored.

5 out of 5 stars Another addition to your Lovecraft library..........2001-10-02

Unlike most recent Lovecraft fiction offerings, "The Shadow Out of Time" focuses on Lovecraft's final tale concerning Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee, a professor at the infamous Miskatonic University who undergoes an amazing personality change that leads to a mysterious expedition under the deserts of Australia. Working from Lovecraft's own handwritten manuscript along with the common versions, the result is "The Shadow Out of Time" as Lovecraft himself must have visioned the final product.
Along with the corrected text, there are the marvelous detailed notes, appendices and history that readers have come to realize as the hallmark of a Joshi/Schultz collaboration. And like other Joshi/Schultz edited volumes, "The Shadow Out of Time" is a must have item for the complete H.P. Lovecraft library. Hopefully many other volumes devoted to other Lovecraft classics will follow.

This book is an enthralling combination of recipes, culture and history. It is more than merely a cookbook. It offers a glimpse into the vibrant culture of this fascinating part of the world. The recipes are diverse and well-categorized. Though not every dish is photographed, the pictures are gorgeous, with traditional displays. Delightful!

        5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2007-08-04

As a Persian who loves to cook (and eat), I enjoyed this book so much. I have been a fan of cooking and consuming Persian delicacies my whole life, whether in the US or Iran. Batmanglij provides authentic recipes that are not too complex for the novice in a Persian kitchen. Her descriptions of Persian customs and their deep and intricate meanings are very helpful and insightful for those wishing to broaden their knowledge of a fascinating culture. I especially enjoyed her wedding description, because it is still done that way! The pictures are really a work of art; anyone who has ate Persian food knows presentation is everything and the layout Batmanglij displays is simply breathtaking. What I loved most about this book is that it is a great conversation starter! I discovered dishes I have never heard of and wound up asking my relatives in Iran about them. I have used this book not only for cooking, but referenced it for research papers, and given it to many people as gifts. If you buy this book, it will be the only book you need in your kitchen to create a true Persian feast. Noosh e Joon!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant book on how to make the best food in the world !.......2007-03-10

This book is well written, recipes are well documented, and easy to cater for and follow. This cuisine is indeed timeconsuming but ever so rewarding, results are always VERY impressive ! Lots and lots of compliments to the chef, which, of course translate to compliments to the authors of this amzingly useful, practical, informative and also beautiful book.
Having tasted it a few times at a friends' place, I decided that this must be the best and most beautiful cuisine in the world. Since I have no Iranian roots or relationships the cultural references and poetry are a nice addition. And now, I can also add that there is intense pleasure in taking lots of time for the preparation of these gorgeous dishes.

I love this book. After using it for two years I bought one for each of my sisters, and for a few friends. Everyone loves it. The food is always healthy, the flavors are distinct and the recipes are very easy to follow. Nush-e-jan! -liese

Ken Hom, star of several television cookery shows, including Hot Wok, has a natural exuberance and passion for Asian food that is vibrantly evident in this delicious, entertaining, and useful cookbook. Filled with more than 150 recipes that are designed to be prepared in the wok, it offers tidbits of cultural information based on Ken Hom's childhood in his Chinese family, his travels throughout Asia, and his continuing exploration of various Asian cuisines.

Well organized into chapters that begin with notes on the recipes and end with an amusing collection of desserts (including Fluffy Steamed Cantonese Cake--yes, made in a wok!), the book dispels any fears about wok cookery or Asian ingredients by spelling out just how to buy and care for the former and clearly describing the latter.

Ken Hom is a world citizen--he was brought up in the United States, now lives in the south of France, and travels throughout Asia. He skillfully adapts recipes from his life and his travels. Stir Fried Fish with Black Bean Sauce is a classic from Mr. Hom's mother's kitchen, while an aromatic and lightly spicy Vietnamese-style Noodle Soup or Thai-Style Noodles with Chicken take the cook on a delightfully savory journey.

The recipes are aimed at the cook who is comfortable in the kitchen. Any cook, however, accompanied by Ken Hom's depth of knowledge and his helping hand, will enjoy recipes cooked in their own hot wok! --Susan Loomis, Amazon.co.uk

5 out of 5 stars Great guy, great recipes, great book.......2001-10-05

So okay, you go out and buy yourself a wok, you turn up the heat, you get out the oil - and then what? Ken Hom (one of the greatest Chinese chefs - and a terrific TV personality) will tell you. Right from the very basics, like how to prepare your new wok before putting any food in it.

Hom's absolute passion for Asian food, and in particular for Wok-cooked Asian food, shines through as you find page after page (bless me, 224 of them, I see!) of amazing recipes (over 150 for the punk accountants amongst you). But Ken Hom offers more than just a recipe and a photo. He strategically places notes on ingredient choice, preparation, and even cultural explanations based on his childhood in China. Added to this is information gleaned from his travels in Asia, and his exploration of Asian cuisine.

Ken Hom is truly international. Born of Chinese parents, raised in USA and now living in France, he travels frequently to Asia to learn more about his art. I saw him recently on a French television program, sharing the secrets of French cuisine with a top chef. Talk about depth of knowledge - Ken Hom knew almost as much as the other guy!

Get this book, try out the simple recipes first, then move on to some of the slightly more difficult ones. Believe me, wok cooking can me rewarding, not just for it's simplicity, but for its superb variety of flavors and aromas. Learn from the true master, and let Ken Hom into your kitchen. I promise you, you'll not regret the experience.

This is a very nice book with great pictures and old print ads. It also provides considerable written information on the history and progress of the company and glass making.

I learned a great deal about Carnival glass and my ability to identify specific pieces was greatly enhanced because of this book. Highly recommended, especially for the beginner to Carnival glass.

Make embroidery that really stands out! Silhouetting, or stitching shapes in a single color against a contrasting background, gives the images extra richness and dimension. With your needle, thread, and canvas, sew silhouette cross-stitches in elegant and Romantic-period style; childhood classics such as teddy bears and fairytale motifs; favorite pastimes from sports to gardening; country charms; Christmas joy, including a nativity scene; celebrations; sights and sounds from around the world, and a variety of borders and alphabets.

              5 out of 5 stars Wonderful...wonderful !.......2002-08-24

There are so many cross stitching books that are so similar that it is a real joy to find one that is out of the ordinary. The designs are many and for the most part are different and interesting. I bought the book this morning and I have not moved since I started looking at it. My biggest problem is deciding what will I do first. I hope that Ms. Welsby has more books!!!

5 out of 5 stars Not just for cross-stitchers!.......2000-11-15

This book is a treasure trove! I confess, I do not cross-stitch. I do filet crochet, which uses thread to make lace. I have just finished creating a pattern for lace curtains for my kitchen, combining various motifs I found in this cross-stitch book. Since this book features silhouettes, few if any modifications are necessary to make the patterns work for filet. Frankly, it is a better filet collection than many filet books! And of course, I'm sure it's wonderful for cross-stitchers, too. The patterns include wonderful (and unusual) nature scenes, scenes of children at play, cross-cultural patterns, holiday patterns, borders, traditional designs, contemporary designs, and more! You can find patterns for the Taj Mahal, the Statue of Liberty, or a scene right out of the Everglades. And of course you can mix and match motifs to make your own creation. I highly recommend this book.

The life of the telecommuter or at-home self-employed worker appeals to many--47 million Americans already work out of their homes, according to Marilyn Zelinsky, and 8,000 new home offices are started each week. Yet surprisingly little attention is paid to the environment in which the work gets done. Most of us don't have a home office all set up and ready to sit down in the day after we quit our office jobs, so we end up using the dining-room table or a desk stuffed into a corner of the bedroom. Zelinsky's message is that it is important to have the right kind of space to work in--space that will feel comfortable, meet our specific needs (such as project space, or an area suitable for client meetings), maximize productivity, and keep us from falling prey to eyestrain, back pain, or carpal tunnel syndrome.

"I'll warn you now that this is not a book about pretty pictures. It's a book depicting the real world of what it's like to work in a home office." The largest section of the book is devoted to office planning--not for beauty, but for health and productivity, including finding the right furniture. Zelinsky doesn't do things by halves: design professionals and ergonomic specialists are consulted, along with their customers, who provide some hindsight on the process of setting up an office. All furniture price levels are discussed, from snap-together plastic units to Ikea computer desks to the high-end "computer armoires" that keep everything together and look like expensive antiques when the doors are closed. Zelinsky is a strong proponent of ergonomic furniture, correct work-surface placement, and healthy work habits. She even devotes a chapter to feng shui. True to her promise, there are numerous first-person stories of real-life home-office problems and solutions: working with several employees in small New York City apartments; dealing with poor telecommunications services in rural areas; setting up an office to accommodate a severe physical disability; fitting a retail business and showroom into your home. Whatever your circumstances are, this is a must-read before you take that home-office plunge. --Barrie Trinkle

              5 out of 5 stars Real-world advice.......2001-02-24

Most books in this category showcase grand offices filled with beautiful expensive furniture and look like they've never been used. Zelinksy, on the other hand, writes about the challenges that real people face when trying to create a home office in a basement, attic, closet or a cramped corner of a bedroom. I especially liked how the book included loads of advice on how to kid-proof (or spouse-proof) your office, work in a really rural town, work with an assistant in your home, buy an ergonomic chair, find enough storage, and outfit an office on a really tight budget. Definitely worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars A great tool for the home office revolution!.......1999-07-17

We are witnessing the next revolution in the workplace - the transition of work from the office to the home. Zelinsky's book offers practical advise that can help ease the transition of a new telecommuter, or improve the productivity of a seasoned home office worker.

Beyond simply advising on furniture and technology solutions, Practical Home Office Solutions addresses the psychological issues that telecommuters and home-based entrepreneurs deal with on a daily basis.

I would highly recommend for anyone who spends some part of their day working from the home.

5 out of 5 stars Most practical book about home offices........1999-07-16

I am now planning to work at home so I wanted to read the books on the home office to see where to start. I liked the title, because it includes the word "practical" which is exactly what I was looking for. The book has a no-nonsense approach to planning a home office. I especially appreciated all the comments from regular folk who work at home, all the problems they had and the solutions they found. The book covers how to work at home, how to overcome isolation, how to find inexpensive furniture--I looked up a furniture liquidator in my town as the author suggested, and will buy my desk and chair from there at half the price I expected to pay elsewhere! I didn't even know these stores existed so I'm grateful for the book's advice.

4 out of 5 stars This is a book written from both the Heart and Experience.......1999-07-15

The kitchen table. The laundry room. The corner of the master bedroom.

This is where many Americans tend to locate their home offices, and Marilyn Zelinsky's book, "Practical Home Office Solutions" gives an excellent case as to why this spells disaster and even a better case on how to avoid it.

Written from experience and from the heart, Marilyn takes us on a journey, somewhat personal but extremely factual, that shatters the stereotypical home office. We don't need a home office lifted from the pages of Architectural Digest. That's an unrealistic fantasy. We also don't work from the kitchen table. That's a recipe for failure. What we do need is a personal space that not only inspires us to work, but also enhances productivity and lifestyle while applying the principles of ergonomics. The author gives so many practical tips that any reader's ideal home office is lurking somewhere within the book's pages.

How to buy a chair. Feng Shui for the Home Office. Working with children in the house. How to pull storage out of the air. Which American cities are most conducive to telecommuting. The list goes on.

If you run a business from home, this book is a must. If you telecommute or run a telecommuting program for your company, this book gives you the facts, the figures and the studies necessary to make any corporate program work.

Read it from cover to cover. Leave it on your desk and wander through it, pulling ideas out at random. It has an extensive resource guide and planning sheets to get you going when you are finally ready to make your ideal office happen.

I give this book to some of my clients who are setting up home offices. As a home office design consultant myself, I find it a necessary tool for shattering the home office image the media has created and getting the creative juices flowing.
