Book Description
In 1845, Edgar Allan Poe, published his acclaimed poem "The Raven," became the overnight darling of New York literary society, and fell in love with a beautiful—and equally famous—poet. It was the year that ruined him forever.
John May's perfectly imagined novel brings New Yor's giddy pre-Civil War social scene into brilliant focus as it unfolds the spellbinding story of a doomed man and the great love that sealed his fate. By the end of what should have been his crowning year, Edgar Poe was reviled by the same capricious circles that had gathered adoringly at his feet to hear him recite "The Raven" again and again. Swept up in the fervor, Frances Sargent Osgood, then separated from her husband, arranged an introduction to Poe to offer her fealty and her friendship. But what eventually transpired between them was far more than two poets' mutual admiration. Over the course of their brief liaison, the two lovers wrote and published (under pseudonyms) many not-so-veiled love poems, and soon enough, New York's literati were abuzz with their affair.
While Poe dallied, his dying wife, Sissy, and her mother were humiliated. And while he despaired, drinking himself into oblivion, Poe's dream of editing his own magazine in New York died on the vine. At the turn of the year, the Poes left New York in disgrace. Deeply in debt and spurned by former fawning admirers, including Horace Greeley, N.P. Willis, William Cullen Bryant, Richard Henry Dana, and Maria Child, American's most renowned writer was a broken man. He had wrecked two women's lives. Even so, both Fanny and Sissy loved him unremittingly to the bitter end. Poe died at the age of forty, alone and having never fathered a child. Or had he?
Told with special empathy for Fanny's warm, impulsive generosity as it shimmered alongside Poe's dark genius,
Poe & Fanny follows the lovers' story to its logical conclusion: Fanny Osgood's third child was Edgar Allan Poe's.
John May brings to life the drama of these lives acted out against the backdrop of nineteenth century New York's vibrant literary world.

Slow reading but captivating.......2005-08-12
For some reason it took me much longer than usual to read this book. Maybe it was the detail. However, I really wanted to know how the story evolved and ultimately ended. A fascinating and captivating story which is written from the revolving points of view of the main characters.
I didn't find out until the end of the book that most of the poems referenced or excerpted were in the back of the book. This would have been good to know so I could have read them as they took place in the storyline.
Some imporatant points or references to Poe's life could have been better clarified or discussed in the storyline. They were simply passed over or given passing reference. But I came away thirsting for more on Poe. I also advise you to keep a copy of "The Raven" handy since it is pivitol to the story and not reprinted. You will want to re-read it!
I've visited his grave often since I live in Baltimore, and attended law school here where he rests (at Westminster Hall's graveyard attached to the school). Now I really understand better some of the main events in his life and his downfall.
I recommended the book.
Lacking .......2004-12-06
A rather turgid, disjointed read. You know the sort. Where the POV is strained and details are sketched in where they may. There's a lot of historical information here, lots of names are dropped, but the characters never quite come alive.
Much is made of the setting, little of what lay deeply within the hearts of these passionate, driven characters. I'd hoped for more than a tedious, detailed, never-ending wardrobe account of poetess Mrs. Fanny Osgood (all pin tucks and beribboned bonnets and full skirts) and somewhat more besides the fact that Poe was a gaunt, dark-eyed genius with a taste for liquor and threadbare suits, with a white-clad consumptive young wife hidden in the shadows.
May does not pick the brains of his characters ~ especially Poe, that wildly creative, outside-the-envelope literary figure who enthralls to this day. May puts together his story by simply placing description and action and conversation onto the page, and leaves one to guess at motives and emotions.
Too bad, because what might have been a fascinating gallop through a complex friendship blossomed into a true, shared passion becomes instead a pedestrian, properly fashionable stroll through the gaslit, cobbled streets of old New York ~ fur muffs, bonnets, top hats, walking sticks, pintucks, waistcoats and all.
Page turner.......2004-07-22
John May's first novel left me with great hope that he will write more. Poe & Fanny was a wonderful education in the state of the literary world, and life in general, in the 1840's as well as a fascinating look at Poe himself. Most people grow up reading The House of Usher, The Tell-Tale Heart, and The Raven in school with only enough information about him to know he had a way with the macabre and married his first cousin. This book revealed the very vulnerable, tender, human side of this incredibly talented man who, like a lot of artists, had all the talent and the heart to succeed but couldn't get it together. The daily drama of his life combined with the passion he felt for Fanny --and John May's wit and talent - made this a book I could not put down.
Why We Read Historical Fiction.......2004-06-30
Baltimore's original Raven fans could not be more compellingly imagined. This romantic and richly detailed story of Poe's struggles with alcohol, ambition, creativity, loyalty, and multiple loves not only introduces readers to the wrongly forgotten poet Frances Osgood, but also brilliantly illuminates 19th-century American culture, especially the competitive world of New York City publishing. The writing is fresh. The scandal is new. The book is terrific.
Intriguing!.......2004-06-17
I was so taken by the world of this book-- the hustling and rivalry of the various magazine editors of the time, the heated, gossipy atmosphere of the literary salons-- all fascinating. And Poe himself emerges as an intriguing character. Despite the fact that he's one of the pillars of American literature, Poe & Fanny shows his all-too human sides as well as his constant struggles for both financial solidity and literary reputation. And I was torn as a reader between Poe's love for his sickly young wife and his soulmate-like passion for Fanny! The pages flew by as I was drawn into the author's delicate resolution of the story.

Excellent.......2007-03-07
A good buddy of mine and I are both big Stackpole fans, and have most of his works. This was one that I didn't have, and my buddy suggested I find this book, and I am very glad I did. It is an interesting tale, and I love the way the chapters are set up, with one explaining the present, then the next going into the past to help further clear things up. I also love the first person perspective...I feel that it makes a the character easier to identify with. This was a excellent read!!
GOOD JOB MAP.......2007-01-28
this was my favorite book along time ago, recently Ive tracked it down and reread it. Enjoyed it way more the seoond time, this is still one of my favorite books of all time
Excellent.......2006-03-13
Nearly of the same caliber as The Dark Glory War or Once a Hero
A must read for any fantasy fan.......2006-02-24
This book was amazing-I was familiar with Stackpoles work from his DragonCrown War Cycle series, so I expected good things from this, and my expectations were exceeded. The book tells an awesome tale in the present, about a man struggling to help achieve justice in the world and shatter the image of fear people have of people like him-but at the same time in alternate chapters it tells in extensive depth the tale of how he came to become a "Justice"-and its a wonderful tale. I feel I even LEARNED a lot from this book too ^_^
You really get connected to the main character, and want him to succeed, and look foward to seeing HOW he succeeds. Give this book a try, you WONT regret it.
Revenant Risen.......2004-11-26
Michael Stackpole's first novel, Talion: Revenant is a fine addition to his bestselling fiction. Though written in 1986, it was only published a decade later, but is a fine fantasy offering nonetheless. While superficially, the plot appears to be rather stereotyped (A boy, who witnesses the brutal killing of his family by Hamisian raiders vows to exact vengeance on the lands of Hamis), interest rarely, if ever wanes. This is created primarily through the intriguing web of politics weaved through the plot and the creation of multi-dimensional characters, particularly the main character, Nolan ra Sinjaria. Rather original ideas involving magic enhance the effiacy of Stackpole's writing.
A "Talion" refers to one in service to the Shattered Empire, which in Revenant is comprised loosely of several states. Talions take on a diverse range of roles, from riding mythical hawks to the feared Talion Justices, whose duty is to uphold the law, empowered with the ability to draw the souls from a body. Written from the first person perspective, "Talion: Revenant" details the experiences both of the main character Nolan as a Novice Justice in training and a Justice pursuing bandits throughout the Shattered Empire. Without revealing too much of the plot, a conspiricy is soon revealed, and as a Justice Nolan seeks to uphold the law in a divided nation. While Talion: Revenant is not a short read, spanning 175,000 words and in parts slows in pace, Michael Stackpole masterfully weaves politics, adventure and magic into an absorbing read.

Book Description
ORIGINAL SIN
Piers Rameau, a brilliant geneticist, was offered the chance to help design mankind’s replacement—Original Man, a smarter, stronger, swifter race based on manipulated human DNA. But Rameau refused, and chose to follow his own path.
Now Kuno Gunnarsson, creator of Original Man and Rameau's would-be employer, is dead—but his superior creation lives on. And one faction of Original Man is determined to wrest control of the galaxy from the inferior race. A brutal attack destroys both Rameau's home planet and the satellite that has become his world. One tragic casualty is Dakini, a fragile, genetically altered dancer who had become Rameau’s reason to live.
The sole survivor, he finds himself a prisoner of Gunnarsson Prime, a clone of the original creator, on board the Jumpship Langstaff. Against his will, Rameau is enlisted as the ship's wartime medical officer. As a doctor, he swore an oath to do no harm. As a man, he swears blood vengeance on the inhuman killers who destroyed everything he ever loved . . . .
Customer Reviews:
Good story and thoughtful.......2003-07-20
The book is set in the same imagined future as Typhon's Children and Riders of Leviathan, which the author wrote as Toni Anzetti, and shows the same gifts as those books. One misses the beautiful descriptions of nature, especially those from Riders, since the book is set in spaceships and space stations, but the author's ability to build a setting from within, by showing us rather than explaining to us, that is so evident in Typhon's Children, is very much alive here. The central character, brilliant but flawed, has to grapple with some real moral issues that are not entirely irrelevant to our own time. And best of all, the book cries out for a sequel. I am looking forward to reading it.

Still love it........2007-03-25
I bought this book over ten years ago, after I saw the chocolate sandwich on the cover. Tried it and LOVED it, as did my son. From there I just worked my way through the book and I can't remember being unhappy with anything I made from it. Surprised by the negative reviews posted just under mine but I guess if its not what you're expecting, then you're going to be disappointed.
That said, it's a fabulous sandwich book.
What was the point ???.......2007-03-09
I could of gotten better recipes off the web and for free.
Not what I expected.......2007-02-12
This recipe book was recommended with the panini grill - but it has very few grilled recipes. Not what I expected at all.
Not a good italian panini cook book.......2007-01-10
This book is not quite what I thought it was going to be. If you are interested in more dinner/lunch panini (italian) sandwich type cookbooks look elsewhere.
Hot sandwitches.......2007-01-04
A lot of good recipies to try, not what kids would like

This is a very good book for training yourself to talk to dogs.
Guess what?.......2006-09-15
Big suprise, dogs know that we aren't dogs. The gig is up, dogs don't relate to us the way they relate to dogs. Get a book that really teaches you how dogs think and learn.
The best puppy training.......2006-05-09
The best training book I've ever used. Has easy to use schedules and day-by-day steps for bringing up a healthy, well-trained dog.

I love Carol Lea Benjamin's books. Check out her Secondhand Dog and Surviving Your Dog's Adolescence, too. :)
My very favorite dog books are by Patricia McConnell. Her wonderful books are wise, humane, and so enjoyable. I highly recommend The Other End of the Leash, Beginning Family Dog Training, and How to be the leader of the pack...And have your dog love you for it.

An Intersting read.......2004-05-17
I found this book to be very interesting. It had techiniques i was already familiar with ( creating and ebossed stamp), but it also had sometechiniques like oragami phot corners which i though was so cool to use fo rmy scrapbook on my trip to china. I think it is useful for beginners as they search for various ideas, it is an inspirational book that will help with basic techiniques with stamps and thier versitile uses.
i only gave it three starts b/c it did not wow me the way other books on scrapbooking techniques have and the directions are a little vague in some instances.
