Book Description

Screaming with the Cannibals, the much anticipated sequel to Lee Maynard's cult classic Crum, gets its title when the central character finds himself in an evangelical service in Kentucky on the other side of the Tug River from his native West Virginia. As the folks touched by the Spirit rave and howl, he remembers how, back in Crum, the folks used to tell him to stay on his side of the river, because the people on the other side were known to eat their children. And now, here he is in a Kentucky holy-roller church, screaming with the cannibals.

Since the first novel, our protagonist has visited the West Virginia holler where his family lived before he moved up to the greater sophistication of Crum, and there he discovers that his favorite uncle has disappeared from the face of the earth in a moonshining accident. He then meets the girl who makes the earth - or at least the hay loft - move for him, quite literally falling for her. From there he goes to Kentucky, and then to Myrtle Beach, where he gets hired as a lifeguard, although he cannot swim a stroke.

If Crum is (as many have said) West Virginia's answer to J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, then Screaming with the Cannibals is Appalachia's response to John Updike's Rabbit Run.

4 out of 5 stars More Pleasure for Fans of CRUM!.......2006-02-05

Maynard's SCREAMING WITH THE CANNIBALS takes on the next stage in the life of the narrator of CRUM, which has a large following of enthusiastic readers. This one picks up the story where CRUM left off. Fans will leap at the opportunity to find out what happened to Jesse- and yes, the narrator of the first book finally gets a name! Jesse is presented as a sort of archetype of all those young adventurers who need to see what is on the other side of the next ridge. He wants to move on, to escape from everything in his old life. In the final part of this book, he gets as far as South Carolina where he experiences racism, the ocean, and forgiveness. The long scene in which Jesse escapes a Kentucky revival meeting with his soul unsaved and his skin intact is worth the price of the book. He doesn't find everything he's looking for, but there is more than a hint that Maynard isn't through with his story.

5 out of 5 stars Modern American Classic .......2004-09-14

First, forget the review that said women don't enjoy Crum. Anyone can and will enjoy both of Lee Maynard's books if they have a good sense of humour and aren't a prude. I loved Crum. It was hilariously raunchy and accurate in its portrayal of country life.

Screaming With The Cannibals may even be better than Crum. Where Crum was a country boy's wild adolescence, Screaming With The Cannibals is a young man's cross country adventure. It's funny, sexy, adventurous, human, exciting, ...and a whole lot of other adjectives!

A modern classic. So much life and imagination is packed into this small book. Life in the country, road trips, strange Mountain folk, scary Southern folk, tent revivals, crazy preachers, skinny dippin', train jumpin', [hot] lifeguards, murderous cops, car chases, and sex smothered in home cookin'.

It has that timeless, country humour and atmosphere of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, with a bit of On the Road, Stand by Me, O Brother Where Art Thou?, and 9 1/2 Weeks thrown in the mix. All written in simple, straight forward, but still somehow poetic language. I didn't want it to end.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sequel to Crum.......2004-05-21

If you haven't read Crum, don't bother getting this book. This is the sequel to Crum, and although it's not quite as good as the original, it's a great story.

Crum is a book that very few women would enjoy. If you're a guy with a sense of humor you should check it out. It's one of the funniest books I've ever read, about a kid growing up in a small town in West Virginia. The book is full of the adventures of this kid and his friends, and of his quest to leave the town of Crum. If you enjoy that book, you will also like this one.

Lee Maynard is an outstanding writer, and I'm constantly looking for anything new by him. I was thrilled when I found this book earlier this year and not at all disappointed when I read it.

5 out of 5 stars Lee Maynard Rules!! Would make great movie!!.......2004-01-08

This is another great book by Lee Maynard that should be made into a movie.Jack Nicholson would be great in this movie and ofcourse it should be filmed in West Virginia!!

5 out of 5 stars The Quest of Jesse Stone.......2004-01-02

Screaming with the Cannibals(SWTC)is action packed and often hilariously funny. The novel is a page-turner filled with downright descriptive sex, and the language men and boys might use when at war. It is the story of an intelligent young boy, Jesse Stone, coming of age and coping with feelings of aloneness, repressive religion, racial turmoil, etc.

The 2nd in a series, SWTC takes up where Maynard's first novel Crum left off. However, the author skillfully incorporates information from Crum in the form of flashbacks and each novel stands alone.

SWTC opens with Jesse, a rough and tumble 50s era football playing, book reading kid, finishing Crum High School. He is determined to see the world he has experience only through the books in the school's library.

Short on specific goals but high on self-reliance, Jesse packs his favorite book, a change of clothes and about thirteen dollars and "lights out" for somewhere.

He hitches a ride and briefly end up a farm hand in nearby Kentucky. There he gets interested (that's putting in mildly)in a neigbor's wife and contributes to a near riot at the farm community's yearly Fundamentalist revival. On the run, he heads south on an unlicensed Triumph motorcycle he rebuilt from used farm equipment parts.

Testesterone in high gear, Jesse finds more trouble with a South Carolina Sheriff before he lands a job as a lifeguard at Myrtle Beach.

Jesse runs smack-dab into racial trumoil and segregated beaches, the same Sheriff, responsible work, plus hoards of nubile girls and a Mrs. Robinson-type older woman.

If you ever wonder, "What goes on in the minds of teen aged boys?" this is the book to read.

The novel is extremely well written and easy to read. I especially like Maynard's writing style.

Readers who remember Myrtle Beach in the "old days" will enjoy the scenes set there.

Many gay writers have had an affinity for the supernatural and fanciful--think of James M. Barrie's Peter Pan or Oscar Wilde's fairy tales--and why not? In societies that persecute homosexuals, what could be more comforting than alternative worlds that transcend the harshness of reality? In its 17 stories The Drag Queen of Elfland creates not so much other independent worlds, but shows us the hidden reality beneath our all too expected material lives. In "Take Back the Night," a lesbian bookstore owner meets one of the women who runs with the (were) wolves, and in "Hemo Homo," a gay vampire discovers the drawbacks of going to the gym (too many mirrors, is the least of it). Lawrence Schimel is always funny, politically on-target, and unafraid to push his subject to new, and often startling, places.

The Drag Queen of Elfland is a charming collection of short stories that will intrigue and entertain. One should enjoy "fantasy", in its purest sense, to totally enjoy this compilation.

4 out of 5 stars Combining Two Worlds!.......2003-05-13

Here's a collection of 17 short fantasy stories from an author who knows how to be funny as well as push a lot of buttons to get his points across. He's created a new and exciting kind of gay writing through alternative worlds of the supernatural where individuals, no matter your age, gender or sexual orientation can be free to be whoever they wish to be. "Take Back the Night" about a lesbian bookstore owner was fascinating reading that would make anyone hope they never run into a wolf. I was equally thrilled with the stories; "Fag Hag" and "Coming Out of the Broom Closet". What an imagination Schimel has. This is a collection of fantasy stories that should not be missed, written by a young author who seems to have a talent for tackling difficult subjects and making them light but fascinating reading for all of us.

5 out of 5 stars *smirk*.......2003-04-11

I laughed, I cried, I got vaguely grossed out about horse racing, and I loaned it to my best friend, who also loved it.

Not a bad story in here, and certainly wouldn't offend most anyone...well, except the prudes. Who wouldn't read this anyway. So, in conclusion, buy this book! It's a fun little read.

5 out of 5 stars Fantasy with a splendidly modern sensibility.......1998-06-12

Lawrence Schimel's short stories address the fantasy genre from a perspective firmly rooted in contemporary queer society with results that are both delightful and poignant. He manages to pack more emotional resonance into his stories (the longest of which are just over a dozen pages) than many writers manage to get into entire novels.

Henry Hill was a born wiseguy, and his love of food got him through both the good and bad times. 4 out of 5 stars good cookbook, but.......2007-04-16

I've made a few of the meals in here, and they were very good. Not all that different from the way I cook anyway, but a few differences made the meals better. No problem with the recipes.

My problem is with the marketing of gangster life. This isn't a merely an Italian cookbook-- this is promoted as a MAFIA cookbook ("cooking on the run"?). His life stories are told in euphamistic and humourous fashion, but the reality is very different. The end of the book is almost enraging-- Henry says he he sees pierced and tattoo'd kids eating dinner at McDonald's, and wonders where their parent are-- they ought to be having a nice family dinner at home.

PUHLEEEEZE!!! Read his childrens' book-- "On the Run--A Mafia Childhood". Years of drinking and drug related abuse, not coming home for days at a time, turning his home into a drug and sex den, both before and after his bust-- and much worse stuff-- if you find yourself getting amused by his engagingly told tales of gangster glory or if you find his stories of his Broolyn childhood endearing, then you need to read his childrens' book for balance. See the link below.

Buy this book used. I wouldn't put a dime in Hill's pocket.

On the Run: A Mafia Childhood

5 out of 5 stars A thumping good read. .......2007-02-25

Hill's book is extremely insightful. It's very descriptive and chocked full of authentic Italian recipes and stories from Hill's gangster life. The recipes range from very simple to somewhat complicated, depending on the reader's preference. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about the real-life, but old style of Italian cuisine.

5 out of 5 stars The Wise Guy Cookbook: My Favorite Recipes From My life as a Goodfella to Cooking on the Run.......2007-01-16

A colorfull presentation of some excellent recipes, I truely value this book, in my collection. Try his shrimp receipe for the grill, excellent, my guests loved it and I the simplicity.

5 out of 5 stars Cook better than an Italian restaurant.......2006-12-06

I got this for my husband last Christmas and we haven't found anything that wasn't totally delicious. The only problem is, we can't eat Italian in a restaurant anymore! We cook better at home!! With Henry's precise step-by-step directions, and his delightful autobiographical inserts, this is our favorite cookbook.
If you can stomach it, a viewing of "Goodfellas" really makes the cookbook a lot of fun and brings the voice of Henry Hill to life. Sometimes we can feel him running around our kitchen in his drug-induced haze, preparing his Michael's favorite meatballs just like in the movie!

4 out of 5 stars Great, but not the best.......2006-02-28

My only criticism is that a many of the recipes in the book would be found in any other Italian cookbook. That said, the tips and stories behind the recipes make up for that.
I would recommend it to anyone looking for classic Italian (or Italian-American) food. The book deals with how to make the best food anywhere. No matter where you are, or what your local shops have, you can find something great in these pages. The emphasis is on how you approach cooking, not just what you're making.

Tardy is *the* standard book for silver hallmarks. Alas, the French company that produced it has gone out of business and it is now virtually impossible to find this book anywhere.

The book is organised by country, and has two indexes - an "analytical" (pictorial) index showing the marks grouped together by "subject" (all the bird marks are together, all the crown marks together and so on) and telling you where in the book you will find the full details of that mark, and a second text index which tells you where to find the dog hall marks in the pictorial index.

Highly recommended - if you can find a copy!

I originally checked this book out from the library. I did not want to return it. It is a masterpiece for the penny pincher! It tells you how to make your own version of store products. I even make my own perfumed starch for ironing now! I love it and could not imagine doing with out it. As a mother of 4 I can assure you will save money and feel good about being so clever for getting this handy book!

5 out of 5 stars When you're looking for an alternative to superstore robbery.......2004-06-20

I purchased this book when it first came out and just picked up two more copies...it's THAT useful, that I want to be sure to have backup copies for when my original one goes.

If you want an alternative to high-priced supermarket items, check here. If you want a food item with less sodium, sugar, etc., the recipes in this book can easily be adapted to your needs. For instance, I follow the instruction for Thousand Island dressing, but make substitutions and end up with a dressing which is fat-free and tastes delicious without the chemical aftertaste of mass-produced big name brands.

Of course, there's more to the book than food recipes. It's a great help when you need a cleaning product and can't get to a store or don't want to go. You can create your own with just a few ingredients you keep around the house.

It would be nice to see a new edition come out. I'm sure it would sell well.

                          Book Description

From the 1920s through the 1950s Maxwell Anderson was one of the most important playwrights in America. His thirty-three produced plays make him a leader among these playwrights of America's most creative era in the theater, and a number of his plays have shown a lasting vitality and importance. What Price Glory (1924) dramatized the disillusionment and horror of World War I. With Elizabeth the Queen (1929), Winterset (1935), and High Tor (1936), Anderson revived poetic drama in the modern theater. His versatility as a playwright was further reflected in the satire Both Your Houses (1933), the historical parable Joan of Lorraine (1946), and the musical play Lost in the Stars (1949).

This edition of Anderson's letters spans his adult life--from 1912, shortly after he graduated from the University of North Dakota, to 1958, just before his death. Arranged chronologically, the letters reveal in full and intimate detail the development of his career, his methods of work, his relationships with theater people, his conceptions of himself as a playwright and of the nature of the theater, and his ideas about his plays, all of which focused on an inner moral struggle. Every aspect of his work and personality emerges in these letters, which serve as an autobiography in the rough. Each letter is fully annotated, permitting the reader to become a party to the correspondence. The editor has provided an informative introduction to the letters and also a substantial chronology of Anderson's life that incorporates the first complete bibliography of his plays, poems, essays, fiction, and screenplays. An appendix includes Anderson's previously unpublished statements about his life and his plays.

Dramatist in America, the first edition of letters by a major American playwright, takes on added importance for its representative quality. It reveals the cultural and theatrical conditions under which a vital generation of playwrights created this country's finest period in the drama.
