Glad I found this.......2005-10-02
Silver Pennies has made terrific bedtime and quiet-time reading for our 3yo. The poems are short enough and entertaining enough to keep a little person's attention, and ours has already found some favorites.
After all the cutesy-wootsy, sanitized, dumbed-down kids' books I've read through, this is a delight.
Have you ever watched the fairies when the rain is done...?.......2002-02-12
Although the new cover looks more like a Book Of Shadows than a book of children's poems, the actual writing still has the charm of the original. Beautiful, optimistic, sentimental...a lovely trip back to what was good in my childhood.
Beautiful Contents, Terrible Package!.......2001-03-17
When Silver Pennies by Blanche Jennings Thompson was first published by The MacMillan Company in 1926, this beautiful collection of poetry for children was bound in cloth imprinted with the silhouette of a small child reaching up to the heavens towards a cascade of silver stars. The current publisher who claims a 1976 copyright is aptly named Buccaneer Books, for they have pillaged much of the charm of this book. The library cover is the dullest imaginable! For the price of this reprint, surely they could have reproduced the cover which so captured my imagination and that of so many other children in years past. I would have given this book all the stars in the world, had they kept those stars on the cover!
What an Incredible Find.......2001-01-07
A dear old friend gave this book (1952 ed) to me ten years ago. I was only 22 years old then and much to busy for poetry. She died a few years later. For ten years, I didn't pay it much mind. Then I had my first child and began to search among my books for poems that would be good to read at bedtime. To my delight, I rediscovered Silver Pennies. What a find! My husband and I read from it every night and our little 2 year old loves it. It's become almost a ritual at our house. I know my son doesn't understand all words, but the poems have a beauty all their own and he must appreciate it. I've read my favorites such as The Faithless Flowers, Rain in the Night, and Water Noises so many times that they're now committed to memory. I probably know at least a dozen of the poems by heart, which has been a real delight to my son when we are traveling or camping out and don't have books to read or light to read by. I just recite them to him in the dark -- he loves it and drifts off to sleep every time. My husband and I will always treasure this little book.
Found again..........2000-02-02
This book was given to me over 30 years ago by a dear friend of my parents and has been lost to me for sometime. I remembered it so well because when you removed the book cover it showed (I think!) a girl and tree (on a hill?) embossed in silver, with silver pennies falling from the sky. The goblins, and those green glass beads, "Give them me" "No." What a wonderful introduction to the gifts of poetry and imagination. I look forward to my new copy.

Nightfall.......2005-07-06
Most of the reviews here say that Nightfall was a wonderful book. I disagree wholeheartedly. The plot was cliche and the action dragged horribly. Prince Edward's naivete was completely overdone and implausible. Nightfall is supposedly a legenday thief, but he comes off as alternately self-doubting and incredibly arrogant. All in all, this book was a waste of time.
One My Top Favorites!.......2005-05-10
There are books worth reading, really good books, and then there are great books; Nightfall is one of these. I divide great books into those that are too heavy or emotional to re-read often - Lord of the Rings, Donaldson's Gap series, and The Unlikely Ones for ex - and those i could read again within a year or 2 - like The Chronicals of Narnia, the Death Gate Cycle, and Nightfall. Awesome, love it, recommend it. You find yourself deeply invested in the characters, and you can really see the world they are in. A friend now asks for book recomendations "any more like the Legend of Nightfall?"
I noticed a couple of reviews that were very poor. I find it hard to imagine a reader of adventure/scifi/fantasy disliking this book; you can see some of what I've enjoyed, I suspect the bitter ones should shop in the section about grain elevators.
i'm going to buy the sequel now. let you know in a couple weeks if it's good
A poorly written book.......2004-04-02
I picked this book up at the store after reading online reviews and a brief synopsis. From reading about the plot, I thought that the book had the potential to be a fantastic. However, after struggling through the book, I was disappointed and left to conclude that the author had choked.
Despite the plot's promise, the actual writing of Nightfall leaves much to be desired. The characters waver between being wooden and flat and being overblown and completely unbelievable. The diologue comes across as implausible and stilted while the author's style seems uncoordinated. Basically, the book is awkward and uncomfortable to read. Despite all of the wonderful reviews, I was left unsatisfied.
Couldn't put it down.......2003-01-12
This book was completely captivating and well written. I think this story shows how rumors and legends can overtake reality... Nightfall isn't quite the big, bad demon that legend makes him out to be; he's got weaknesses and strengths like anyone else. This made his character (and the story) very believable.
Prince Edward's incredible naivete was humorous, but as the story progresses, he begins to learn more and to grow up. At times in the beginning of the book, I wanted to throttle him because of that innocence, but as the story progressed, his character began to mature.
One thing that was completely unique was Nightfall's magical ability to change his weight, thus greatly contributing to his success as a thief. I don't recall ever seeing this ability used in any other book I've read, and I loved the uniqueness of it. His ability allows him to become heavier (to stand firm or balance) and become lighter (to lessen the impact of a fall or climb more easily).
I was completely involved in this book and could not put it down (even though that meant staying up past four in the morning to finish it!) Definitely glad I bought this!
Meh.......2002-11-09
This book was okay. It did not grab me the way many books do. I finished it and the story was all right, but the pacing of the book was not good. Exciting fights read slowley, conversations dragged on, and so on. If you like characters that are simple to understand and a simple story this is a good book for you. I would defiantly rate it as a 'beach book.' It's a book you can pick up and put down and have it out of your head as soon as it's down. Sorry for the mediocer review but it's not a wonderful book.

Book Description
Hugh Johnson, the preeminent wine writer of our time, now brings to his fans around the world his first major new book in a decade: this stylish, intimate, and delightfully opinionated autobiographical tour through the world of wine. A Life Uncorked weaves Johnson's wide-ranging ruminations, memories, and observations on his remarkable life together with information on every aspect of wine--from its technical production to its cultural significance. In luminous, utterly engaging prose, he taps into his enormous experience to consider topics such as tasting, cellaring, choosing, understanding, comparing, and buying wine, as well as wine's more ephemeral and personal pleasures, lures, and mysteries.
At the heart of A Life Uncorked is the idea that wine is more than a drink; its characteristics link it directly to memory, to locations around the world where grapes are grown and wine is made, and to the dining rooms, restaurants, bars, and gardens where we consume it. Johnson takes us to all of these places and many more in this delightful and revelatory memoir. Peppered with anecdotes throughout, A Life Uncorked simultaneously educates and entertains with its absorbing perspective on the complex and fascinating world of wine from one of its most well-known and well-liked aficionados.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful, relaxing wine tour - through life!.......2006-09-04
I must admit that I've never followed the author's wine advice but I cut my wine teeth on his fantastic wine atlas. I bought this book on a whim and it's taken me months to drift through it - not because it's a hard read rather it's sort of a wine vacation experience best experienced without haste.
If you're a wine fan who needs a vacation but can't get away; read a chapter or two and live vicariously.
btw, yes, there is an oft-quoted sentence disparanging GWB and RP in the same whack. Not entirely off the mark though, is it?!
A wine lovers must have.......2006-07-08
A Life Uncorcked is a celebration of the vine. It is a fun read and very informative. I especially love his take on the current wine rating systems, finally someone with sense!
A corking good read!.......2006-05-01
I recently published a brief review of this wonderful book in the print edition of The Washington Examiner newspaper (www.examiner.com -- April 29 & 30th Weekend Edition). Here is that review:
Recently, I had the opportunity to catch up with world-renowned wine writer Hugh Johnson as he breezed through town promoting his new memoir on the inner workings of the wine world, A Life Uncorked. This is a deeply personal book. Yet, as Johnson admits, it is not an autobiography. Rather, this memoir is a personal journey, as much about wine as it is about his life.
For Johnson, wine is essentially "a social game" not merely an interest or a hobby. Wine is "about human relations, hospitality, bonding-all the maneuvers of social life-and all under the influence, however benign, of alcohol." Who can argue with that?
This social experience is richly transformative: "However good a wine may be, sentiment can make it better" and "with the right companion, a single wine can be a continuing conversation." In person, as in his writings, Johnson comes off as witty, personable, and charming, and his approach to wine is wonderfully infectious.
Never one to shy from a fight, Johnson (a Brit) takes issue with Robert Parker, the preeminent American wine critic. Johnson criticizes Parker's wine scoring system, which treats wines "like American high school students"-50 points just for showing up, 60 = dreadful, 70 = pretty poor, 80 = not bad, etc. Johnson decries the effect this approach has had on the wine industry, where wines are Parkerized to get higher scores.
Ultimately, Johnson's unpretentious and highly enjoyable attitude towards wine appreciation is compelling. As he plainly explains, "It depends on whether you see wine primarily as a drink or as a recreational substance. In a drink you look for something refreshing and satisfying without too loud a voice, not too intrusive on your food or your thoughts each time you take a sip." So take a page from Hugh's book, and enjoy a jolly good read with glass in hand.
Book Description
When Tom Corwin’s golden retriever, Bob, passed away unexpectedly, Tom decided to write a letter as a tribute to his life. The letter told Bob’s many human friends what they might not have known — the surprising story of how he was once a ferocious, untrusting dog named Red, and how through sheer determination he changed completely to become Tom’s best friend. Tom began receiving an outpouring of heartfelt responses to what he came to realize was actually a universal tale about the possibility of change and the transformational power of love. Friends and strangers urged him to bring the story to more people, and with a vision of how it might look, Tom designed this special book version of the letter. With a total of just more than one thousand words, this poignant story reads like a poem, underscored by flipbook illustrations of Tom's beloved Bob. Laid out with only one sentence per page, the book’s spare quality and unique design have a powerful impact and readers will return to its pages again and again.
Customer Reviews:
A very touching story........2007-03-27
I read the reviews before I ordered the book and I'm glad I did. The story was touching and a the way the author wrote it is worth every dime. You have to remember that the story is a letter that was written and this lends the layout of the book quite unique. The cover and size of the book is one that makes you treasure it to be read over and over again. I know some readers didn't think it was worth the money and some even suggested that they could of saved their dollars and read it in the store but that's not the point. The point is, it's a touching little book and worth every dime. This would make a great gift to anyone who has loved and lost a furry companion.
Gives new meaning to the word "book.".......2007-01-31
The publication of Mostly Bob, more appropriately titled Entirely Bob, is incomprehensible and illogical to this lover of dogs and cats. From its abbreviated length, a mere five-minute read; to the nauseatingly slathered praise like this from Linda Winer of New York Newsday, "Not since Charlotte's Web...have I been pushed past the sadness to accept the beauty of a life well lived;" to the audacity of the author to bite the hand that feeds him, that is, to badmouth his neighbor "Mark," who willingly gave up his dog to Tom; is inexplicable. Mostly Bob looks like a book (though miniscule); sounds like a book (riffle the pages); and even reads like a book (through the one page prologue at least); and although Corwin's admitted "letter" about Bob is a tribute worthy of the caliber of dog that Bob was, it is NOT a book in the conventional sense of the word. In fact, Bob's story can be summarized in one long (probably run-on) sentence: Bob, a golden retriever formerly know as Red, was an unfriendly, unkempt neighborhood pooch for nine years until the death of his neighbor Tom Corwin's dog, at which point he intuitively began to ingratiate himself into the bereaved man's heart and home, while self-transforming into a loving, caring companion, a role he fulfilled loyally until his death 4.5 years later.
If the proceeds of Corwin's letter-disguised-as-a-book tribute to Bob aka Red were to be donated to some dog-worthy cause, the entire ruse would be excusable; however, as is, the publication is an overblown, overpriced, over-tribute to one of man's best friends. Those compelled to read Corwin's "letter" might consider borrowing it from their local library and donating an amount equal to the cost of the book to their neighborhood animal shelter.
Mostly Bob.......2007-01-10
It was a very heartwarming story, but quite differently told in the book with just a sentence or so on each page.
Mostly Bob is cute but..........2006-11-10
A great book. A great idea. A real tribute to Bob but you read this book in minutes.
Amazing BOok.......2006-11-10
Bought this for my best friend who's beloved Cat died and had seen this book in a store. Knew she would relate and she loved it. Made her CRY but helped her with her loss. I suggest this book for anyone who loves animals and/or knows a friend who has lost a beloved pet.

Book Description
Rabbit Maranville was the Joe Garagiola of Grandpa's day. or maybe he was the Jay Johnstone. In a twenty-four-year career from 1912 through 1936, Rabbit found a lot of funny situations to laugh at. No wonder. He caused most of them himself.
Few fans alive today have had the privilege of sitting down for a few beers with the Rabbit and listening to him spin his tales. But fortunately for us, a year before his death in 1954, Rabbit reached back forty years into his memory and put his sotires down on paper after the urging of his daughter and Max Kase, former sports editor of the New York Journal-American, who had employed Maranville in a public relations position. Unfortunately, Maranville did not finish his autobiography before he died. For decades the tales rested, virtually unread, until the Graber brothers, Dallas and Ralph, discovered the manuscript inconspicuously offered for sale by a memorabilia dealer and bought it rescuing it for all future fans to enjoy.
The stories give us much autobiographical material about Rabbit. But they are not an autobiography, any more than Baseball Is a Funny Game is the autobiography of Garagiola. They tell us much history. And yet they do not comprise a history, any more than Veeck as in Wreck is a history of the Cleveland Indians.
Rabbit's memory played tricks on him, not surprising to anyone who has interviewed old men reaching back into the past. Where errors were found, I have attempted to correct them. Where Rabbit's somewhat Lardneresque prose has breached some rules preached in sixth-grade English classes, I did my best to make him readable without making him slick. In short, I tried to let Rabbit be Rabbit.
To fill in the details in Rabbit's life not covered in his stories, Bob Carroll has delved into the records and penned a more scholarly account of dates, places, and names in Bob's own irreverent, even Maranvillian, style.
Customer Reviews:
Rabbit Tales.......2001-04-22
A short read, only 90 pages, an easy read also. The book is short stories from Walter "rabbit" Maranville's experiences as a baseball player from 1911-1939. Each story is no more than a page or so. Did everything he talks about really happen? Well I guess that's part of the charm of this book. Like your favorite Grandpa spinning stories from the past, I sure there is some embellishment, but the spirit of the story comes through. If you're looking for the story of Rabbit's life this is not it, this is just great short stories from a great story teller. A fun, quick read.

Book Description
A comprehensive and practical guide to the United States Treasury bond market, this timely book offers a detailed introduction to the workings of the largest government debt market in the world and the investment opportunities it provides. Wann begins by outlining the history and development of the market, explaining how it operates and examining the parts played by dealers, investors, and the U.S. government authorities. The U.S. Treasury market is compared with the UK gilts market and its economic and political background is analyzed. He goes on to provide an introduction to investment theory and analytical methods, including yield and return calculations, and looks at futures and options contracts on treasury bonds. The book concludes with a consideration of more advanced investment theory and investment strategies. The appendices include bond-equivalent yield calculations, formal mathematical proofs, statistical data on U.S. government finances since 1789, and a comprehensive glossary. Written by the Senior Economist in the London office of a major U.S. investment house, Inside the U.S. Treasury Market is an authoritative and important book. It will be particularly useful for fund managers, investment analysts, brokers, bankers, and corporate treasurers.

Book Description
Shed the illusion that the building in you're your in which tools and backyard equipment are stored must be, by definition, a boring and ugly necessity. The revised and expanded edition of
Sheds contains absolutely everything you need to know to design, build and enjoy the ultimate backyard shed.
Award-winning designer David Stiles helps you think through the issues involved in shed design, such as use, cost, placement and "degree of difficulty." Following a chapter on construction basics, he guides you through each step of building a simple 8 x 10-foot shed -- from foundation to cupola and everything in between. This core chapter includes a material list, step-by-step illustrated instructions and a daily labor schedule, as well as new information on timber framing and moving your shed to a different location.
The book then presents several basic sheds, along with a number of more complex special-use sheds, including a pool shed, an Irish garden shed, even a Japanese boat shed. The all-new storage shed on posts allows you to situate your building of a slope.
Packed with detailed illustrations, plans, commonsense advice and an inspiring selection of color photographs,
Sheds is like having a consultant at your side as you work. Whether you are an average amateur builder or an ambitious expert, this book has something for you.
Customer Reviews:
Really like it.......2007-08-04
The book was all I expected. Good and easy to understand information for a novice. Plan to have my storage shed up in no time.
Wow - this is an eye opener for the British.......2007-03-25
We don't do sheds like these - what a surprise. These are very nice looking outhouses that most carpenters could build. The plans and dimensions are pretty basic but all the construction notes are within the book so it would cause the average home carpenter no problems. The designs ae really nice and opens up your thinking beyond just another shed - to creating a garden building that enhances the garden rather than creating an eyesore for the future. When I get round to building one of these I might just move out of the house and take up residence in my new 'shed'. The shed would look better than the house!
Wonderful book.......2007-03-05
This book is great. I had one copy and lost it and liked it so much that I bought another to replace the lost one. Lots of great sheds from small to large.
As essential as my toolbox!.......2007-02-03
What an inspiration, and good ideas are exactly what we weekend builders need. I find there are lots and lots of technical books on building and construction techniques - how to size nails and screws, how to mix cement, estimating lumber, etc., but there are very few books which provide inspiration in the form of great ideas and alternatives to the standard box that most people build for a shed. I found the drawings to be very clear and specific and had no problem with planning and constructing my own personal design based on the Stiles' great ideas and instructions.
A little disappointed.......2006-07-19
I read all the good reviews and bought this book. I have to say I am disappointed. There are not a lot of content in the book, as you can tell that the author intentionally increase the margin of each page to greatly increase the total page number. The diagrams are sketchy, of low quality.
I happened to pick up a book "building shed like a pro" at local library, it is a whole lot better. If you go to book store and read both books, you will know what I mean.

Excellent for both students and professionals!.......1998-01-23
I am an architecture student and have found this book to be invaluable. Many of my professors have been impressed with this text and have thought of requiring it. Stitt's format of easy to photocopy pages with comprehensive checklists make this book helpful for keeping up with the commom sense portions of materials selection and space design. The author uses room-by-room descriptions of everything from electrical concerns to materials and mechanics. Nearly every common building type is included and I know that when I have met the requirements Stitt outlines, that my imagination is my only boundary in a terrific design. It is a book that I am sure I will use nearly every time I start a project for the rest of my life.
