For many years Gioia Timpanelli has crisscrossed the country (and the globe) collecting and then telling stories. In a world that is becoming increasingly dependent on information coming from the computer, television, and satellite dish, Timpanelli continues to communicate universal themes the old-fashioned way--through the oral tradition. In her first formal foray into the written word, Sometimes the Soul, she draws on the stories with which she has mesmerized audiences for years and crafts two fine novellas that explore within a traditional framework the lives of two highly untraditional women.

"Si cunta e si recunta"--"It is told and retold," begin the old Sicilian folktales. Both of Timpanelli's stories take place in Sicily and weave Sicilian fairy tales into the fabric of her modern-day sensibility. In "A Knot of Tears" the heroine, Costanza, has locked herself away from the world in an old villa in Palermo to give herself time to pick up the pieces of a life that has been shattered. Her beauty and her mystery touch the hearts of two very different men who glimpse her through an open window: a young man of wealth and his worldly lawyer. They make a bet as to who will speak to Costanza first. The youth consults an actress who promises to arrange a meeting; the lawyer bribes a sailor to insinuate himself into the house to find out more about the lady--a feat the sailor achieves by allowing his parrot, Nello, to fly through an open window.

"Si cunta e si recunta" the parrot repeats time and again. When the sailor comes to reclaim him, he is invited into the house where he satisfies both the parrot's and the lady's desire for stories. As the sailor tells three tales of a young princess with the magical power to heal, Costanza gradually begins to heal as well: "In a year of Good Fridays, a small resurrection of spirit was stirring. Well, as usual, the old tales had uncanny truths in them, and Costanza had often seen this princess rescuer in the everyday world, not a worldly princess, but one of the heart."

In "Rusina, Not Quite in Love," Timpanelli takes a more straightforward approach, retelling Beauty and the Beast, but even here the author's interest is less in the old fairy tale itself than in the purpose of storytelling: "It is true," said the Uncle. "These old stories are like the parables, they tell us what we know but have strangely forgotten, until we hear it again and we say, 'Oh! Yes. Of course."

Like one character's tale of an old woman who went out without her shawl, Timpanelli's stories are "simple but not so simple"; in telling them, she is advocating fiction's power to shape and transform our lives. As with all the best old stories, the two novellas in Sometimes the Soul are entertaining, charmingly told, and leave you with something to think about when they're done. --Alix Wilber

Book Description

Winner of an American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation

"No one in the world . . . can tell a story better than Gioia Timpanelli."--Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes

"Gioia Timpanelli's novellas . . . offer simple lessons about the nature of beauty and the beauty of nature . . . in rich, incantatory language." --The New York Times Book Review

A renowned storyteller who has beguiled audiences around the world offers these mesmerizing novella-length fables about two young women and the transformative power of art. In "A Knot of Tears," a baroness locks herself up in the Green Palace, only to have her seclusion interrupted by a parrot that flies through the window. When a sailor arrives to retrieve his companion, the young man and his pet delight her with three inspiring stories, while an unscrupulous suitor schemes to lure her out of her house and into his arms. In "Rusina, Not Quite in Love," Timpanelli recasts "Beauty and the Beast" as the tale of a loving young heroine who escapes her poor family to live at the estate of Signor Sebastiano. A devastatingly ugly man who prefers plants to people, Sebastiano leads Rusina to the true meaning of beauty. Lyrical, enchanting, wise, these timeless stories are, in the words of the baroness, "simple, but not so simple," as they enlighten readers about the virtues of love, solitude, and art.

"Gioia Timpanelli's stories . . . are dreams . . . and these dreams, in the skill of their telling, lead us back to ourselves." --The Boston Globe

"This is brilliant writing . . . [that] changes tales into fresh literature . . . by the passion of an educated person for the great things in life: plants, works of art, talk at dinner, and devotion." --Robert Bly

4 out of 5 stars Two pretty tales.......2002-04-02

_Sometimes the Soul_ contains two novellas set in Sicily. One, "A Knot of Tears", is a story about storytelling; the other, "Rusina, Not Quite in Love", is a Beauty and the Beast tale.

In "A Knot of Tears", the lovely Costanza, recovering from a vaguely hinted betrayal, has shut herself away from the world for a while, and is just beignning to feel stifled by her self-imposed isolation. As two wealthy suitors plot and scheme as to how they can get her to come out of her house, Costanza finds something much deeper with a young sailor who tells her a serial fairy tale about a strong heroine, which turns out to parallel Costanza's own life in interesting ways. A well-written novella about the power of a good story and about coming out of depression.

In "Rusina, Not Quite in Love", Rusina becomes companion to an eccentric elderly couple, and befriends their ugly and reclusive nephew, Sebastian. From her new family, Rusina learns about the beauty to be found in nature and art, and yet has trouble coming to terms with Sebastian's inner beauty and outer ugliness, even as the two become friends. The situation comes to a head when Rusina attends a costume ball and meets the most handsome man she has ever seen, and must decide what is really important.

Timpanelli's prose is lovely and well-written. Sometimes I felt like I was being lectured, as if a Major Life Lesson was being imparted to me in a less-than-subtle manner, (especially in "Rusina") but overall both novellas were interesting, romantic, and worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars This book reaches into your heart and captures you........1999-11-18

It has been a long time since a story was able to reach inside and grab my heart, but Sometimes the Soul by Gioia Timpanelli did just that. I found myself in both novellas, in Costanza and Rusina... When is the last time you neglected to love someone deeper because you were focused on thier outer self? Have you ever felt isolated from the outside world and had one person change it all for you? Do you enjoy viewing "the unseen world", alive in "the world's details"? If you do, this book is for you. It's a special relationship, sentence by sentence, between you and the finely woven tale... ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars Sometimes the Soul waits - This book is worth the wait........1999-04-27

Sometimes the Soul is one of the most literary, mythological, and magical books I have ever read.

The two old Scilian tales are given a contemporary and yet, timeless treatment, spun expertly into a web of colorful characters surrounded by surprise, love, nature, and eternal truths. Written by a 'supreme' storyteller, author Gioia Timpanelli gives us a fresh look at some very worthy, old stories.

Sometimes the Soul is a triumph of the oral story tradition set onto the written page by Timpanelli's artful prose.

These are not just fairytales but reminders to us all of the value of a 'worthy' tale. There are lessons to be learned on these pages, and reminders of what we have lost in our too-fast contemporary lives...myth and soul.

I was enchanted by both stories as a result of Timpanelli's unique and powerful feminine voice carrying the reader into unfamiliar worlds, just as in the second novella, "Rusina, Not Quite in Love" sweeps young Rusina far from the comfort of her family to meet her special destiny.

At first, Rusina agrees to leave, simply so that she can fulfill her father's debts. As Rusina says with the wisdom of anyone accepting their fate..."do not judge my father too quickly...for what child does not inherit parents debts? Debts from character and disposition. Debts from unlived life, sickness, unremembered dreams, poor work, hungry stomachs, stingy imaginations, or little love. It is a rare and blessed child who comes into this world without debt. Besides, when duty and love are two sides of the same coin, then payment is not a burden." And so, off Rusina goes to live with the Beast, and in doing so, discovers who she really is, and what really matters in life and in love. Ah, there's the beauty of this new twist to the Beauty and the Beast tale.

This week, I shared Rusina's story with a group of Kosovo refugees now living in Vienna, only two short subways stops from my flat. English is their second language, so they welcomed reading the story, and it brought up their own recent, sudden, and violent move away from their own homes and all that is familiar to them. It was a gentle way to allow them to open up, share their personal stories with me and the others in the group; beginning the process of sorting out just what this change means to them, and the challenges and even, opportunities that such a change offers..if looked upon correctly.

18-year-old Manika from Pristina added at the end of Rusina's story, "Like Rusina, I've got to keep looking for the good in all of this, and not be bitter, not be filled with hate...hating is easy...it's forgiving that's hard...and loving...even people who kill my people."

This then is a worthy story just as A Knot of Tears is as well. This little volume is packed with the simple truth of life...all in 185 pages!

Sometimes the Soul is a masterful piece of literature written by one who is well-acquainted with life's mystery and magic. It is deep and moving.

I also write and produce the book reviews for Blue Danube Radio, an English radio station in Vienna. You can be sure this book will find its way onto my summer recommended reading list! It's a great find.

Good luck Ms. Timpanelli on a brilliant new career as a writer based on the most ancient of all art --the art of oral storytelling--which you are obviously, a master. Thank you for telling a wider audience your stories, and thank Norton Publishing for having the wisdom to recognize your talent.

5 out of 5 stars Adult fairy tales-beautiful.......1998-08-19

In Palermo, Italy at the turn of the century, Baronessa Costanza Patane has imprisoned herself inside the Green Palace in order to avoid contact with the world except for her perplexed housekeeper, who wonders if her employer is a lunatic. However, everything changes for the two women when a sailor with a parrot on his shoulder walks past the house. The parrot flies through a window and the sailor follows (through a door). The two visitors begin to tell stories to Costanza in an effort to break her "Knot of Tears" even as a shady gentleman makes efforts to trap the Baronessa in his clutches.

Rusina is ill-treated in her home by her father and her sisters. However, the worst thing they do to her is trade her to an unknown individual in exchange for writing off a large debt. At the beautiful estate of her father's former creditor, Rusina meets the ugliest man in the world, wealthy Sebastiano. Will "Rusina, Not Quite In Love" see the inner beauty of her beastly host?

These two novellas are extremely well-written adult versions of classic fairy tales. All the characters are intriguing and the plots are filled with depth, rarely seen in a transformation of a child's tale into an adult story. SOMETIMES THE SOUL consists of two great novellas. Anyone who enjoys a soulful adult rendering of childhood favorites will want to read Gioia Timpanelli's latest masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Oddly better than the original.......2006-04-20

I liked Gaiman's original Books of Magic but had trouble finishing it and never got the following books. I read the first part of Life in Wartime in a sampler book from Vertigo and was immediately hooked. This book has the intrigue and politics that the first book skipped. I'll probably end up with the first series as well but Life in Wartime is what brought me back.

1 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected.......2005-08-02

I was first turned on to the Books of Magic way back when in the original Neil Gaiman miniseries. I'm happy to say that those first four issues were my introduction to the wonderful world of graphic novels, and my gateway into the even more sinister depths of Sandman and Hellblazer, and by extention Lucifer and Swamp Thing.
Since then, I have watched the initial concept slowly whittled away until it represented nothing of the origenal intention, which was an exploration of the DC universe, the forms of magic and the consequences of its use therein.
Instead, Reiber brought us something a little more like Harry Potter (I realise Harry Potter actually came afterward) with a main character you can't sympathize with and secretly believe doesn't deserve the power that seems to have been thurst into him for no good reason at all. It stops being a journey of the mind and starts becoming a kind of tattered fairy tale with no sense of continuity and far too much joking around.
I half suspect that Timothy Hunter is supposed to be some kind of Everyman, and that the reader is supposed to examine their own teenage years through him. Mind you, it doesn't work.
The Names of Magic, a few years ago, showed at least some promise, and a return to the more interesting realms of the Cold Flame and a halfway believable storyline for John Constantine to take part in.
This new series, as I believe I have hinted, completely trashes whatever it was I liked about the first series. For starters, John Constantine plays some kind of warlord commander of humanities last resistance (which if you understand the character at all, is completely unbelievable). His girlfriend, the lovely Zatanna, who he actually exchanges "I love you's" with, is some kind of terrorist working on his side. The enemy isn't explained in a whole lot of detail, and it's probably just as well.
Where Tim fits in isn't exacly clear. While the rest of the cast seems to be taking part in a post-apocolyptic future, Tim spends the entire book in a world of his own creating which seems to have taken elements of his childhood and expanded them as he wishes they would have been. He saved his mother from the car accident rather than his dad, he has two best friends named Cat and Dog that provide him with illegal narcotics, and nobody knows the meaning of words like "war" or "disease". The best part though, the best part, is that Molly is back, only now she has red hair and has a more insatiable libedo that I have ever witnessed in a real girl. Why Tim would even want to imagine a Molly so different from his cherished childhood memory, the one who wouldn't follow him into the abandoned lot because she wasn't about to let some greaseball take advantage of her, I can't guess.
Fine, I get it, he created another world to sheild himself from this one.
Throughout, there are hints that John was actually the one to create the world, but it's never really fully explained. A lot isn't explained properly. Some wierd stuff is happening in Tim-world, and it seems to be essentially the real world trying to break through into Tim's fantasy. Okay. Whatever...
The book ends and Tim is still stuck in the fantasy world. He hasn't made any contributions, and one gets the impression it's going to take a while for anything to make sense.
Maybe this is one of those serieses where everything is confused at first and slowly clears up into a glorious finale. Maybe the actual plot is deliberately obscure, and we're suppose to be concentrating on the dialog. Or maybe, as I see it, Spencer had a halfway-decent idea and tried to fit it around pre-existing characters, stretching them out of their mold in the process.
I don't have high hopes for any second book they may relase, and I don't intend to continue with this series.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply awesome.......2005-02-24

Who is Timothy Hunter? Any longtime reader of Sandman author Neil Gaiman knows the answer, but for new readers of the character, this first collection of Vertigo's new series Books of Magick: Life During Wartime, is a wonderful place to start. Tim Hunter finds himself caught between two worlds. In one world, he parties hard with his girlfriend Molly, his best mate Dog, and Dog's sister Cat; living life as good as he can. In another world, there is a bloody war going on in which Tim is unknowingly in the middle of, with John Constantine and Zatanna in the middle of as well. Both worlds collide when a mysterious figure named Brewster appears, and Tim realizes the destiny in front of him. Written by Si Spencer with consultation by Gaiman, Life During Wartime is yet another strangely addictive and original ongoing series by DC's mature themed imprint Vertigo. The art by Dean Ormston more than suits the book, and is something that Sandman and Books of Magic readers will be familiar and comfortable with. All in all, this first volume of Life During Wartime shows the promise of Vertigo's latest ongoing series, and this is the time to check it out.

3 out of 5 stars Starts wooden, but eventually hooked me in.......2005-09-19

"Odyssey" is Book #1 in the "Isaac Asimov's Robot City" series. Written in the 1980's, this was apparently the first novel to take place in Asimov's robot universe that was not written by Asimov himself.

I read Asimov's robot novels many years ago, and remember enjoying them very much. When "Odyssey" first began, I found myself thinking, "Uh oh." The premise was interesting enough, if a bit standard (the amnesiac plot has been done to death). But the pacing was very stilted, and there was an overuse of having the main character, Derec, fall unconscious as a device to move the plot forward in both time and space. It would be fair to say that the story bordered on "boring."

BUT, after the first few chapters, I found myself becoming more involved in Derec's plight. On top of having to solve who HE is, he also has external mysteries which demand his attention. I became swept along with him, and started really caring about the story's resolution (for those of you who might feel the same, I should warn you that the book has a cliff hanger ending, so be prepared to follow at least Book #2!).

One complaint, after I finally got interested, was how easily Derec allowed some people to hold back information about his past when they clearly had it. If I were in HIS shoes, I would have grabbed Kate and SHAKEN it out of her!

Overall, a decent read, so long as you stick with it. For myself, I will PROBABLY end up buying Book #2, and HOPE that Derec's secret history is revealed therein.

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Science Fiction Story.......2004-11-29

Marooned on a frozen asteroid, Derec suffers amnesia, having no recall of who he is or where he is from. He stumbles upon a community of mining robots sifting through the asteroid as if searching for something. The asteroid is attacked by raider ships and destroyed, but not before Derec discovered what the robots were looking for. He escapes the asteroid with the artifact only to be captured by the raiders and ends up working as a mechanic and has to build a robot for the ship's leader. While on the raider ship he meets another human and allies himself with one of the aliens who will help him escape.

An explosion occurs and these three end up in a hospital on a spacer station deep in the universe. After recovering the artifact from the robot guards, it is from here that Derec learns the truth of the Key to Perihelion that he saved from the raiders and finds himself in a city like none that he has ever seen before. A strange and unimaginable city inhabited completely by robots where he and the other human, Katherine, become the two primary suspects of a serious crime that has occurred.

This story brings to life two scientific concepts: artificial intelligence and instantaneous space travel. This story depicts a future where robots are as numerous as humans and can "think" on their own. This science fiction novel generates suspense and interest, as every time Derec falls asleep or is knocked unconscious he seems to wake up in a completely different place. For all of you sci-fi nuts (myself included) this novel, along with the rest of the books in the series, is a must have. And for those who may not be into science fiction as much this novel still has an incredible story that you will not want to put down.

Part 1 of Designing Great Beers is a complete book in itself, focused solely on home-brewing ingredients and techniques (including three superb chapters on hops alone). Ray Daniels proves himself the "techie" type, infusing his introductory chapters with as much brewing math as brewing lore. Yet, Daniels never hops off the deep end of beer geekdom. Instead, he complements this emphasis on data with the creative use of graphics; where one could get bogged down in the stats, there is usually a clear visual depiction to instantly summarize their meaning.

This focus on facts continues into part 2 of Daniels's guide, where it backs an admirably pragmatic take on beer styles and their importance in home-brewing. Daniels devotes a chapter to each of 14 major style categories, detailing historical origins and modern brewing techniques. He lays a contemporary groundwork by compiling and analyzing the recipes of the National Homebrew Competition's most successful beers. The assumption is that beers deemed representative of particular beer styles in modern competitions serve as ideal models for recipe creation. Among the information provided for each style is a chart showing the percentage of brewers using each type of grain and in what proportions the grains were added. Similar data are supplied for hop varieties, yeast strains, and water treatment. This reverse engineering of award-winning beers naturally benefits experienced brewers seeking to wow judges at the next competition. Yet, even brewers taking their first shy steps into creating their own recipes have much to gain from this kind of practical analysis. Daniels provides the basic tools a brewer of any level can use to formulate recipes with confidence and creativity. --Todd Gehman

5 out of 5 stars Great book for advanced homebrewers.......2007-08-10

Truly great book, I taught I knew all about craft-beer-making, but in this book I've found many useful tips & tricks for adanced homebrewers.
But - this book is not for beginers.

    5 out of 5 stars Invaluable reference.......2007-06-29

Daniels' book is a must-have for the intermediate brewer. Invariably newcomers to brewing start off with extract kits, which can produce decent beer and have the virtue of simplicity. However, after a few batches, the now-intermediate brewer typically wants more control over the result, which leads to forays into recipe formulation. Daniels provides a wealth of information that can help with that. This book does not provide recipes, but it does provide great information about the fundamentals that you can use to formulate your own recipes. I wouldn't want to be without this book.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for your own recipes.......2007-05-21

After trying to come up with my own recipes and having to guess at hop varieties, specialty grains etc. I wanted a good resource for outlining what characterizes a certain style. "Designing Great Beers" is just that. Ray Daniels analyzes winning brews over many years and provides great little tables about typical grain and hop bills. If you design your own recipes, this is a MUST HAVE!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for intermediate to advance brewer.......2007-02-12

This is a great book. Ray breaks the book into 2 sections: generic design and then history/style/specifics for major styles. I found myself switching from back to front as I was recently brewing a Bock. The history of the style really helps to understand beers especially in a category like Bock which has many variations.

The book doesn't give you specific recipes. It is designed to help you tweak existing recipes or in the creation of your own recipes.

My conundrum while reading this book.....the more I brew and the more books I keep finding and reading, the less I know about beer!

    Cheers!

    3 out of 5 stars Craft Beers.......2007-02-09

Very scientific stuff. This is for the serious brewer. The information is a little over my head. Maybe in a few years of brewing this book will be needed but this is not for the beginner.

5 out of 5 stars Creative American Quilting Inspired by the Bible.......2003-07-17

Although the quilting techniques in this book are somewhat outdated by today's standards, the photography and designs are outstanding. I had the opportunity to hear one of the authors at a lecture, and she brought the featured quilts from the book. They are all stunning, and it will be hard to decide which one you want to make, whether for bed, wall, or church hanging.Unfortunately, the book is out of print at this time.

                    Book Description

The Order of Ornament, the Structure of Style examines the emergence of modernism in Central European art, architecture and design, and its relationship to late nineteenth-century theories of style advanced by John Ruskin, Owen Jones, Gottfried Semper, and Alois Riegl. In addition to basing their investigations of artistic development on works produced in all periods and cultures, these theorists looked to natural science and linguistic studies for models with which to order their studies. They suggested to artists and architects that ornamental motifs and compositions from remote cultures and periods could furnish the means to create rational designs, express creative processes, and produce new perceptual possibilities for both the constructed facade and the painted surface. Debra Schafter’s study thus positions nineteenth-century visual aesthetics within a broader intellectual context that is philosophical and scientific, while contributing to a new understanding of the origins of modernism outside of the premiere centers often associated with the Modern movement.

Charlotte Charke led an amazing life in eighteenth-century England. Often in debt, cast out by much of her comfortably-off family, partly for her habit of wearing men's clothes, she tried her hand at inn keeping, pie making, doctoring, waiting at table, gentleman's gentleman, and most successfully (tho that's not saying much) as a strolling player. Her words tumble out just like someone speaking, she doesn't always stick to the point but she brings her times and surroundings vividly to life as she junkets about the country with Mrs Brown, her Friend, living from hand to mouth.
