Book Description

These stories are offered together for the first time in English translation. They cover a period of more than 30 years, and were originally published in French periodicals and in Russia. Zola's racy tone is faithfully rendered by Parmee whose translations have been highly acclaimed.

4 out of 5 stars There's some great movies hiding in this book........2005-02-25

Emile Zola is one of the greatest writers of all time. His novels "Germinal" and "L`Assommoir" easily place in my List of Top 10 Novels. "The Attack on the Mill and Other Stories" is an impressive collection of short stories spanning Zola's career. The thing I found most surprising is how funny Zola could be! All of the novels I've read have been dark and depressing, but the story "Rentafoil" was absolutely hilarious. Another thing that struck me was how some of these stories ("A Flash in the Pan", Coqueville on the Spree" and "Rentafoil") would make great movies.

"The Girl Who Loves Me" 3.5/5 A guy finds "love" at a fairgrounds

"Rentafoil" 5/5 Side splitting story about a business that rents out ugly girls to decent looking girls so they can go out in public together.

"Death by Advertising" 4.5/5 Humorous story about a guy who believes everything he reads in ads.

"Story of a Madman" 3/5 Wife drives husband nuts.

"Big Michu" 3.5/5 Revolt at a boy's school.

"The Attack on the Mill" 5/5 Classic Zola. Just read it. Best story in the collection.

"Captain Burle" 3.5/5 Captain Burle is a lazy ol' sod.

"The Way People Die" 5/5 Just what the title says. Sad.

"Coqueville on the Spree" 5/5 Residents of a remote coastal village put their differences aside when something special washes up on shore. Very funny.

"A Flash in the Pan" 5/5 Could easily be made into a very erotic movie. Hot.

"Dead Men Tell No Tales" 5/5 Who knew Zola wrote horror? Very uncomfortable and disturbing story. I had a hard time reading it.

"Shellfish for Monsieur Chabre" 4/5 Funny story about a twit who doesn't notice what his sexy young wife is doing.

"Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder" 2.5/5 Long slow story about a guy who is thought to be dead, but isn't. Way too long.

"Priest and Sinners" 4/5 Obviously Zola didn't care much for priests.

"Fair Exchange" 2/5 Boring story about a talented but drunk painter who marries an ugly woman. Skip it.

"The Haunted House" 2.5/5 Lame. A guy investigates a haunted house. Very weak. Skip it also.

5 out of 5 stars Great stories from a master storyteller.......2000-09-27

Zola is my favorite author and this is a wonderful selection of his short stories. Recently translated by Douglas Parmee, these stories were originally published between 1864 and 1899, spanning most of Zola's writing career. Arranged chronologically. you can see the author's style develop as you move from one story to the next. A great introduction to Zola's writings! The stories: The Girl Who Loves Me - A great description of a carnival sideshow's effects on a lonely young man. Rentafoil - An amusing satire on society's attempts to package and sell beauty. Story of a Madman - A woman and her lover plot to put her husband in an asylum. Big Michu - Boarding school students organize a hunger strike and a simple peasant's son takes the blame. The Attack on the Mill - The German Army occupies a French village and a young woman is forced to decide between the lives of her father and her lover - a wonderful love story. Captain Burle - A French officer embezzles funds to support his mistresses. The Way People Die - A series of brief tales showing death in different social settings. Coqueville on a Spree - Two feuding families in a small town resolve their differences in a most unusual way. A Flash in the Pan - Love between the classes is thwarted when a peasant girl falls in love with the son of a well-to-do lawyer, but her jealous father gets in the way. Dead Men Tell No Tales - A dead man tells his tale. Shellfish for Monsieur Chabre - A young woman has an affair while her aging husband gobbles shellfish to increase his virility. Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder - An exiled revolutionary given up for dead returns to France searching for his wife and daughter. Priests and Sinners - Like The Way People Die, this is a series of short sketches; this time dealing with the relationship between priests and people who are thought of as sinners. Fair Exchange - An excellent portrayal of the evolving power relationships in the long-term intimate relationship between a husband and wife. The Haunted House - A haunting story about how rumor can color our perception of reality for the worse. Seven pages of Explanatory Notes by the Translator, are very helpful in bringing these tales to the modern English reader.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Read ... leaving more questions than answers........2003-05-12

I followed the exploits of Montrovant through numerous decades and three books to see this trilogy through to its conclusion. I am also reading the follow-up trilogy set in the modern nights, called the Trilogy of the Blood Curse - which chronologically precedes the serial set of Clan Novels (13 total).
I am intrigued by the introduction of new characters and the way the quest ends for our protagonist. I do not know if it was something worked out between Gherbod Fleming and David Niall Wilson, but it seems like certain things were purposely left unexplained, as well as certain other things left "open" ....
(I'll let you read the book judge for yourself)

One thing I liked was the way David Niall Wilson presented the relationships between certain key character pairings/groupings. Examples include Montrovant and his childe, LeDuc and an aspirant to the Bitter Ash, called Abraham and his childe of necessity - Fleurette. In a novel populated in majority by emotionless, cold-hearted corpses ... you will come across moments of recognizable "human" sentiment expressed by these blood-drinking predators.

Overall, I felt it was a worthwhile read. The historical setting contributed a lot to the flavour of the prose. The inherent mystery surrounding the Holy Grail and other mystical artifacts provide much for the reader to digest. The brotherhood of knights founded by Kli Kodesh is also an enigma worth further exploration (provided there are authors up to the task). What happens to the Knights of the Bitter Ash? In a world of darkness, it is not always easy to determine who is "good" and who is "evil". There are many shades of gray. If you are interested in the Grail, the Inquisition, the Dark Ages, or a simply well written story - get this book. (I'd recommend you get the previous 2 books in the trilogy as well!)

5 out of 5 stars Nail biting page turner, deliciously concluded!!!.......1998-09-17

    D. Wilson - simply one of the best dark fantasy writers of our times! I can't get enough of his trilogies - more please!!! If you want excellent, page turning dark adventure, he's the man!

      Book Description

This groundbreaking science-fiction collection explores worlds separated from our own by imperceptible veils. In Liquid Earth, reality melts along a rustic Main Street in Shrub Oak, New York. The Lobotomy Club begins in a New Orleans bar, and Sushi Never Sleeps in a New York electronics store. Egg Drop Soup starts with a walk along the tranquil Chesapeake River. All familiar settings at first glance, but a new reality awaits...

You'll visit worlds replete with beautiful women and their surgically altered brains, fractal sex, Noah's Ark, hyperspace physics, hallucinating androids, prophetic ants, exotic sushi, satanic aliens, vitamin B-12, novel plastics, cosmic wormholes, and quests for God and the structure of ultimate reality.

      5 out of 5 stars Philip K. Dick Redivivus.......2005-01-14

If Philip K. Dick were alive today he would be writing the Neoreality series. Pickover continues the task in Egg Drop Soup where parallel worlds make us ask, how can be sure we are living in the same reality we were living in yesterday? Whether you like real science, religious symbolism, or a fun story to keep you awake; this book will surely entertain you. Wonder and surprises await. You will never look at an egg the same way.

5 out of 5 stars Parallel Universes in the Oceans.......2003-09-11

There are parallel universes all around us, just millimeters away -- or so this book would make it seem. From the opening pages, I found the book pulled me in. The egg falls from the sky and is so mysterious that we just have to learn more. I love the interplay between the main characters: the romance, the strangeness... All around them are little roads that lead to new worlds, new shores to explore, and eerie seas to sale on.

5 out of 5 stars Egg, Mystery, Parallel Universes.......2002-09-14

In Egg Drop Soup, an alien object allows people to explore countless realities populated by a host of mysterious beings. I like the Chesapeake setting, the beautiful scenery, the quirky inhabitants. My favorite character in the book is Nautilus, a very scary, deadly, and perhaps even sympathetic girl. Perhaps parallel universes like the parallel-Chesapeake exist. Someday I'd like to visit some of the Chesapeake settings...

Most of the books in Pickover's Neoreality series have a bit of fun strangeness tossed in, and Egg Drop Soup is no exception. For example, I like the cryptic puzzle in the Enochian language that David finds in the library. I've read the four books in the Neoreality set (they can be read in any order) and really liked this one.

        Book Description

Buddhist literary style, much like Latin, is a dead language. Written centuries ago, these pearls of Oriental wisdom tax Occidental minds with hard-to-digest ambiguity on the road to enlightenment. The present work is an irreverent personal odyssey from "Huh?" to "A-ha!" - a literary mockumentary of one Westerner's attempt to snub the Zen Buddhist Masters through imitation that led to a kind of paradoxical (but no more than partial) self-indoctrination in the essence of Buddhism.

Designed as a humorously-cerebral alternative to the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series, "Egg Drop Soup for the Mind" is intended for a complex yet open-minded reader who yearns for a daily intracranial dosage of meditation that cattle-prods the mind and lightens the heart. This book is equally likely to appeal to the spiritually irreverent youngster as to the seasoned spiritual seeker who may have found as much emptiness as meaning in the New Age and Self-Growth literature. The book also serves as a kind of spiritual sales pitch, a springboard of curiosity into Buddhism.

The book is organized into 7 chapters, each reflecting different genres and aspects of Buddhist literature, from koans to haiku. "Egg Drop Soup for the Mind" consists of original work, and is not a translation of any of the Buddhist texts.

This is an adorable little book of Zen puzzlers and Buddhist philosophy in the form of fortune-cookie shorts or in one chapter, bathroom stall graffiti of a philosophical rather than scatalogical bent.

If you have friends who like Buddhist philosophy, this would make a great little gift. It's amusing and yet it makes you think.

5 out of 5 stars Tired of Chicken Noodlers?.......2003-05-15

As he shares with us in his introduction, Egg Drop Soup for the Mind represents psychologist author Pavel Somov's personal journey from skeptic of eastern thought to appreciator of eastern form and finally to seeker of eastern wisdom. With a hilarious true deadpan style, Somov runs the gamut between satire and sincere emulation of his eastern targets. When you are tired of aphorisms and the same old chicken noodles, Somov's devious new book Egg Drop Soup for the Mind serves up a surreal feast of humor and challenge.

This is the best book on greens I've ever found. If you're serious about incorporating a lot of greens into your diet, then do yourself a favor and get this book. Not only does it have several great recipes for each different green, it also has an introduction to each green citing it's particular health benefits. It even lets you know not to eat particular items like beet greens too often. Amazing book.

I love this book because it puts everything into context- it breaks down the nutrients of each green, the origin, how to buy it, when to buy it, how to store it and finally how to cook it. Most recipes start simple and then evolve. It's a great book for beginners and experts.

5 out of 5 stars Good way to start eating luscious greens.......2005-08-12

I have been wanting to add greens to our family diet for years but needed help learning about the individual plants and how to cook them. This book is a good primer, teaching the reader about the general character of each of the most commonly available greens, what nutritional aspects they add to the diet, their flavor, texture, and how they combine with other foods to make a better meal. Importantly, the authors provide advice about the best (and worst) ways to cook each green. The recipes are simple and tasty.

There are no pictures of completed recipes, but after trying one, the reader will probably not need pictures, simply because all the recipes end by gently tossing the ingredients. Nothing complicated here. A cookbook worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2005-08-09

It has so many recipes to choose from. This book is great. I recommend it to all of my clients.

                    3 out of 5 stars It's beautiful but sparse.......2004-03-19

This book is good if you haven't done much in flash. It has a beautiful layout and great (looking) examples, but doesn't do much in the way of in depth flash. Very little action script is applied to animations outside of the game example at the end. The best thing I got out of this book was a reference to www.miniml.com :)

3 out of 5 stars Every heard of....????.......2004-03-05

Ever heard of image numbers (image 1a) or bulleted or numbered lists for step-by-step instructions (that seem to skip a few steps). I read a lot of books and this one is driving me insane because I want to learn what's in here. Great ideas. I've taken one tech writing class and feel this author should do the same.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to follow- but good ideas.......2004-03-05

Once i understand the mistakes here I like what I learn. But it is getting a little bit aggravating. The ideas are good and very applicable to me so I will continue using the whole book to make sure and learn it. But the instructions can lack many details and sometimes seems to skip some steps that matter. I have wondered if the author stopped in the middle somewhere and started again without realizing exactly where we were.

I am using this with MX 2004 which can cause a conflict if you do not know how to go about using expert mode for the actions (which is all that is available with the newest version). That is easy to fix if you can write the simplist of actionscript from what I have seen so far. this came out just under a year ago and the descriptions and pictures I see are from the version before that one.

So this has great ideas but you are going to have to figure some things out for yourself while reading.

5 out of 5 stars The Web site is up and running.......2003-10-29

Of course it's 5 stars, I wrote the book :-)

It took a while longer then normal for the publisher to get the book site up and running, but it's now there and all of the FLAs are available for download.
