Book Description

A provocative first novel that explores the porous borders between friendship, sex and love

At eighteen, Cuzzy Gage has never been out of Poverty, the isolated mountain hamlet where he was born, raised, and--much to the annoyance of his dreamy girlfriend, the mother of his child--seems destined to stay. He is content to hang out and just get by; it's as if ambition hasn't occurred to him. Enter Tracy Edwards, who has come to the area after the death of his close friend, Algernon Black, an ethnomusicologist who specialized in initiation rituals. It's to Black's family estate, the Larches, that Tracy retreats, in grief and confusion, after his friend's death, to archive Algie's work. Through a set of circumstances that look like chance but turn out to be something else entirely, Tracy hires Cuzzy to help sort through Algie's papers. So begins a quiet and ambivalent relationship, one that eventually causes both young men to admit their own histories and to start to rethink the future. As Tracy introduces Cuzzy to poetry and literature and music, he in turn is exposed to the natural world, to a place of granite and schist and other, enduring, hard things. But in a small town their unlikely friendship is inevitably the focus of scrutiny and debate, a debate that ends as no one could have imagined, and makes each of them, in their own way, confront the hardest thing of all.

Poetic and compelling, The Book of Hard Things is a bold fiction debut.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful first novel, hard edged Adirondack life.......2005-10-09

I have been a fan of Sue Halpern's writing since Migrations to Solitude. I found this books as I searched this site for new works from authors I respect. My introduction to the book was as a reader of the reviews on this site.

I'll admit it, I was confused. How could Sue Halpern write so haphazardly or gratuitously as some reader comments suggest. I usd those reviews as guides through the book and found none of the disappointment one would anticipate after reading such negative stuff.

I'm no critic. I'm a reader, and I am also an Adirondacker of sorts. I think that what might have startled some readers is the gentle and flowing Ms. Halpern is not so gentle in this novel. It does flow well, in my estimation. What is missed is what makes her writing work time and time again, the quality that prevails in all her writing: honest portrayal of subject matter.

If you are looking to be swept away into bucholic bliss in a quaint Adirondack setting, run from this book. If you are looking for a compelling story that is so absolutely true to what life can really be like in a small Adirondack town, buy this book!

Sue caputures what is a particular lonliness and longing that casts its shadow as often as not on the youth of Adriondack towns living far from what most of us understand as community life. The characters, every one of them, are portrayed with honesty and can easily be found in almost any small, remote town. Not fun stuff, but the real McCoy.

She doesn't pretend for a moment to lead anywhere other than the theme of hardness, from the title to the various themes that set each chapter, she leads us to despair and hope and back again to the inevidible hardness that is created by not being able to get away.

Some were unhappy with plots undeveloped, for example the fact that the tree house goes unexamined after its miraculous finding. That wasn't,in my estimation, undeveloped or faulty. It was the undeniablilty of the randomness, the wandering of existence and circumstance of such a place.

The scary part for me is the absolute possibility of the brutalness of the ending of the book. It wasn't gratuitous or unnecessary. It was born of hardness, of the rigidness of boredom and the desire for excitement and change...just about any change in otherwise listless lives.

And as for the ending...don't forget, Cuzzy ends up knocking on that door (you'll have to read it to know where I am going). His time with Tracy was one of growth and even through the tragedy of a brutal loss of life he is lead to a greater knowledge of himself. To me, the ending can be taken two ways. One of a continued hardness,of Cuzzy capitulating to the hopelessness of isolation in a small town. But how I read it was as a positive ending. Cuzzy is willing to open up, to take a chance, to see that his life has meaning (thank you Tracy) and that maybe he can being those things he never would have discoveres without Tracy's presence to bear on his life and that of his family.

Buy this book. It is a good read. It is clear and well written. The juxtaposition of the beautiful Adirondacks with hard realities and the longings created by being so far removed from everyday America is an honest chronicle of desire and disaster. It could as easily have been called a documentary as a novel. Its power lies in what it reveals to any reader believing that the Adirondacks is only of beauty and peace. Great book.

3 out of 5 stars Good at first,.......2004-09-26

but then all the sudden it turned weird and boring and I skimmed through the rest. I was disgusted with the ending, so very horrid and disgusting. I am glad the book is over and I will think twice before picking up one of Ms Halpern's books again.

4 out of 5 stars Someone needs to check their geography.......2004-03-06

The novel has some very compelling character portraits.

However, I was surprised to read the review in Publishers Weekly describing the book as being set in "New England logging town." It's in fact set in the Adirondack Mountains, which are in New York state.

2 out of 5 stars Caught Between a Rock and a Hard Place.......2004-01-25

I picked up Sue Halpern's "The Book of Hard Things" with great anticipation, and was immediately taken with the setting, characters, and plot. Unfortunately, my initial pleasure in the writing turned to frustration, as several key plot points went unresolved. The main characters, an educated man of ambiguous sexuality and the poor country boy he befriends search throughout the novel for the man's dead friend's beloved treehouse. They find it, but never get around to entering it, begging the question: Why was it so special? Why spend precious pages on a plot point that has no resolution? In a sub-plot, a local minister visits the boy's father, who shows him notes on a book he says the minister is destined to write, but it's never mentioned again. What does it all mean? The pleasantly rambling narrative ends with a scene of pointless brutality, leaving one character dead, and the others seemingly unchanged by the last 230 pages. Ms. Halpern may have a career as a novelist ahead of her, but I won't be along for the ride.

5 out of 5 stars a book of miracles.......2003-10-14

Beautiful, and searingly sad, yet somehow infused with hope. Halpern writes out of deep knowlege of place and people, and crafts a page-turner that leaves one breathless.

Book Description

They were the Finest Creations—mystically forged creatures of perfection sent by the creators to aid the Fallen (mankind) during their mortal existence.
Though they resemble ordinary horses they are highly intelligent, capable of communicating telepathically and completely moral. They are assigned to bond with individuals of great potential and then protect them from harm while guiding them along a path of virtue.

Gallant-Stallion has found his charge, a young girl by the name of Kalantha, whose brother is soon to be king and the pawn of a deceitful and murderous bishop who covets the royal power and has allied himself with creatures of the dark arts. The Finest has successfully removed her from his influence but now must contend with the other temptations of the world—the lure of power, the mystery of learning and knowledge, and the intrigue and freedom of adventure and independence.

Kalantha is still young and bitter over her lot in life, betrayed, envious, and scared, and her mentor Gallant-Stallion is unsure of how to lead her as is his duty as her Finest.

The Finest series combines elements of Misty Lackey’s Valdemarr series with C.S.Lewis’s Narnia for an inspiring tale of mystical intrigue and the crucible of morality for mankind.

I don't know why the other reviewers liked this book so much. I very much looked forward to reading the book. However, it did not live up to expectations. With so many other great fantasy books out there, this one was a waste of time....

5 out of 5 stars Book 2 of The Finest Trilogy.......2005-11-13

Jean Rabe continues her magical young adult adventure, following Meven as he becomes king and Kal as she seeks to escape both the evil birds that have continued to attack her and the strict, monastic life that the Bishop would have her follow. But as interesting and adventurous as the two young royals are, the real star of the piece is Gallant Stallion, the Finest sent to shepherd young Kal, but unsure how to perform his task. Gallant Stallion's wonderment at the world of men (the Fallen) and the sights and smells and interactions of nature make this much more than a simple adventure yarn. While Kal's impetuous nature can be a bit abrupt at times to adult readers, it is appropriate for her age and circumstance. Much more is set up for resolution in the final volume than is actually resolved at the end of Book 2, but such is the nature of trilogies. Jean's vivid descriptions of the flora and fauna that Gallant Stallion and Kal encounter and her action-packed fight scenes are a true delight. I am certainly looking forward to the final volume. Highly recommended for young adults and lovers of fantasy. Donald J. Bingle, Author of Forced Conversion.

4 out of 5 stars Book 2.......2005-10-26

They look like regular horses, but they are not. They are the "Finest Creations", mystically forged by the creators to aid mankind during their mortal existence. Each Finest is given a human charge to lead, without directly interfering. Humans must have free choice. A human is only granted the honor of Finest if the human has great potential.

Meven Montoll is being crowned King of Galmier at the beginning of this novel. but Meven is the pawn of a murderous man, Bishop DeNogaret, who intends to rid the world of the Montoll line before crowning himself ruler. But first the bishop will use his dark arts to persuade King Meven into war with the other kingdoms, thus enlarging the Galmier realm.

Gallant-Stallion "Rue", a Finest, has a young girl named Kalantha "Kal" Montoll as his charge. Rue has removed Kal from the bishop's grasp and they travel the land almost aimlessly until Destiny arrives. Rue and Kal communicate telepathically, thinks to their magical bond. In this novel, the second of a trilogy, the two must learn about the assassin birds from the Vershan Monastery. The problem is locating the monastery and then finding the one, old, needed book for answers. During it all, those of the dark arts hunt Rue and Kal with murder in their black hearts.

**** Like other second books within a trilogy, this one is not as great as the first. It is mainly to continue the first novel and set things up for the third. Yet the author, Jean Rabe, did a wonderful job in keeping my attention. I never found myself growing bored. People and events begin to come together. I can see where the story is going and am eagerly waiting until I can find out how it wraps up. Excellent book! ****

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful read!.......2005-09-29

I love this series.

Not just because of the world the author weaves, but because of her use of words to transport me to a world that is not just muddy and musty, but that also has its beauties. I love the fact that Rue uses all of his senses to learn and interpret his world. I don't feel like he is a human in a horse's body. But Ms. Rabe doesn't stop there, she also packs in thrills and chills, at times leaving me breathless with fear for the characters.

I also love this series because we see the world not just through Fallen Favorite Kalantha's eyes, but also through the eyes of the Finest Rue. The reader watches as both Fallen and Finest learn about the world and each other, experience success and defeat, and see each other's strengths and weaknesses even as the evil that surrounds them shifts and grows.

One thing is for sure. I will never think of a flock of birds quite the same way again. . .

5 out of 5 stars One of the Great Unsung Satirical Novels.......2003-05-29

Published under this [] title JOURNEY BEYOND TOMORROW, its real title is JOURNEY OF JOENES and it is one of the strangest, most brilliant and touching satires ever written. If Jorge Luis Borges and G.K. Chesterton stayed up all night doing coffee and shrooms, this is the book they'd come up with. As Mike Resnick said in his review, the section about the Octagon is so mind-blowing and so full of comic paradox you'll need to take a deep breath and have a cocktail while your cerebellum cools off.

This book takes place after the world has ended. The conceit is that it is a collection of "folk tales" by the only survivors of the human race, Polynesian storytellers. The storytellers, each with separate idiosyncracies, go around the campfire telling the stories that were passed down to them about The Old Times. About how the world came to an end because of a Mythic Innocent named Joenes who accidentally causes the End of the World. In the process, he finds Jesus Christ in the Hollis Home for the Criminally Insane, is hired as a college professor but has no idea what he's teaching, finds that scientists and lawyers now worship superstition with a random number generator as their oracle, that doctors are creating diseases that cannot be cured, that maximum security prisons have more guards than ever because everyone is trying to break *into* prison, and that the world's most advanced computer humiliates Satan and takes over his job inspiring mankind to a new level of cruelty and war.

I can't tell you how much I love Sheckley. His stories are, as Spider Robinson once said, lean, mean and funny. And his best novels, like Journey of Joenes (aka Journey Beyond Tomorrow, ugh what a title!) are profound masterpieces of satire on the level of GULLIVER'S TRAVELS, CATCH 22, JURGEN, THE MYSTERIOUS STRANGER or THE MAN WHO WAS THURSDAY.

Read this, his other ingenious satirical novels DIMENSION OF MIRACLES and MINDSWAP, and his greatest short stories, especially in the collection IS THAT WHAT PEOPLE DO?

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent satire.......1999-09-24

An excellent satire. The first of Sheckley's three brilliant humor novels of the 1960s (the next two being MINDSWAP and the unsurpassed DIMENSION OF MIRACLES). This book is worth the price just for his description of the Octogon, the most confusing government building ever created.

5 out of 5 stars Glad I finally purchased this.......2007-08-16

I was apprehensive to purchase this book for a very long time because I thought of it more as a recipe "cook book". There are a number of recipes on the 30 Day Gourmet website and I figured "what do I need the book for?" I have to say that the recipes included are not what the book is really for, although many people will find them very helpful. This book is a how to organize meal planning, period. And it is awesome in that regard. It helps with shopping lists, menu planning, organizing a cooking day; all of which I needed desperately! I have 6 kids, I home school, I take classes, so I am busy. I was going broke from yet another "I am tired tonight, let's just order pizza..." or on the flip side I was getting exhausted from planning my whole day around what to do for dinner. I actually did not use many recipes from this book, but adjusted many of my own for this method. However, many of the reviews criticized the recipes for being unhealthy or too la femme cuisine, but they are all kid-friendly, nutritious and fat content is always adjustable (skim milk, egg beaters, less salt etc...)

3 out of 5 stars great starter book, but there are otheres that are better.......2007-07-27

This is a great strater cookbook in general. It has a lot of usefull charts and general guides. And if your just starting to cook, the recipies are simple.
Thats where it goes worng. Too simple. For my taste, I like a little kick in what I eat. Dont let this be your only coookbook.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book to get started in Freezer Cooking.......2007-05-13

This book isn't just about the recipes. It really teaches you then how-to's involved in freezer cooking. By reading the book through and then studying the recipes, you can learn to modify almost any recipe to be used by their method.

I'm sold on 30 Day Gourmet!

1 out of 5 stars Meals/recipes are too 'processed' for me..........2007-04-02

The book was only $10 so I'll chalk it up as a learning experience, I guess. The recipes are very "1970's-Use-A-Can-of-Campbell's Mushroom Soup-in-Everything" for me. Or Velveeta. Or some other 'processed' food item. I cook fresh for the most part. There has to be a way to avoid high sodium, processed, fake food and freeze well...right?

I have never written a review for anything before, but this one deserves it. I absolutely love this book and so does my husband. I never knew so much about hot dogs, as well as the many different ways that people eat them across the country. I have it sitting out so that everyone can see it, and normally that is the first thing they pick up when they come to my home. I definitely recommend this book to anyone, even those who don't like hot dogs will like this book. It is totally awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Puttin' On The Dog!.......2007-04-24

First off, you're going to need two copies of this book: one for the kitchen and one for your glove box. One for the kitchen and one for the road!

Becky Mercuri, as in all her other fine books, has once again gone above and beyond in her quest to document the historical authenticity, modern day excellence, and (with apologies to A.B.) just plane ol' good eats!

The Great American Hot Dog Book does for hot dogs what hot sauce did for the lowly chicken wing: it takes the common and turns it into the exceptional! No matter your station in life, you'll never be able to look down your nose at the hot dog ever again! The recipes that Ms Becky has researched, tested, and then included in this book will see to it that you won't!

She has done a great job of providing us with the knowledge and recipes that examine and celebrate the various regional differences and preferences for hot dogs across this great land of ours. And there are some undeniable difference, for sure. Just ask any hot dog vendor in Chicago for ketchup on your dog and see what happens...

This is a great book on a great American tradition.

Thank you Becky Mercuri for another outstanding resource on traditional American food.

5 out of 5 stars The Great American Hot Dog Book.......2007-04-18

This is a most interesting and fun book. Anything written by Becky Mercuri is excellent. I love reading about hot dog stands in various states and would never have thought that there could be so many ways to serve wieners. Some of the sauces sound delicious. It's been years since I have had a hot dog (not even at ball games) but I plan to use some of the recipes in this book very soon. My family agrees that "The Great American Hot Dog Book" is a very special book.

Overall, this book is what i wanted in terms of hamburger possiblities. There are some recipes that i wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole, although they are all well written and i think i could pull them all off if i decided to cook them. Good book on hamburgers and overall a good buy.

I love to BBQ and Grille (there is a big difference). My wife and I have cooked at least 10 of the recipes in this book and they are all fantastic. This book is not like some that give a handful of recipes, there are tons. This is very creative stuff, easy to cook and unbelievably flavorful. If you want to get oohs and aaahs over your cooking for the minimum effort, this is the book. And to think, they're just burgers! This is one of the "Man Trilogy" (as dubbed by me). The other 2 must have in the "man library" are the Weber Big Book of Grilling, and the Complete Meat Cookbook. Grille on!

Recommendations for ingredient sources, along with tips, tricks, and techniques for preparing meat in general, round out this first-rate and highly recommended cookbook for folks of all kitchen skill and experience levels.

This book is yummy. The health-conscious authors offer lots of alternatives for the non-beef eaters among us and their burger toppings are great. The factoids and restaurant mentions that garnish the pages are fun, too. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Tired of the Same Old Burgers? You'll Love This Book!!.......2003-06-15

Although I have eaten my share of burgers, I have always thought of them as boring. You grill them, slap on a slice of cheese, a tomato slice, whatever sauce you like and eat on a soft and often tasteless bun.

Well....along comes The Great Big Burger Book and with it a whole new dimension on just what constitutes a burger. Certainly there are the traditional meat (beef, pork, veal and even lamb) burgers, but my interest was piqued by the chapter entitled: Burgers That Take Flight: Chicken, Turkey and Duck. Using ground poultry allows you to cut the fat content of a burger and the recipes don't cut the taste and flavor. I have always enjoyed Chicken Marsala and when I saw the recipe for Chicken Marsala Burgers, I immediately tried it. Your family and guests, not to mention yourself will really like that one. The photo of a Bolognese Turkey Burger with Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Green Olives looks delicious, and I'm happy to report that it also tastes as good as it looks.

But the book doesn't stop there. There is an entire chapter dedicated to burgers made with fish and shell fish. I haven't tried them yet as the weather here in Maine has been just awful this spring, and this type of burger should be cooked outdoors. But there are recipes for lobster and scallop burgers and since I love both, I plan to try them as soon as Mother Nature cooperates.

For vegetarians, there are recipes using portobello mushrooms, falafel, quinoa, tofu, eggplant and chickpeas, to mention a few. That chapter fittingly is entitled: Redefining the Burger.

Admittedly, there are ingredients that may be unfamiliar to the reader. For those people (and I am one), there is a glossary of ingredients and an ingredient source list which tells you where you can find the products that may not be available in your area.

This is a wonderful resource for entertaining. Your guests will be amazed by your culinary expertise when you serve them a healthy burger packed with new flavors. Your backyard menus will never be the same or 'boring' anymore!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent coin album for the new Sacagawea dollar........2000-08-04

This is a coin album for collecting the new Sacagawea gold-colored dollar which the US Mint began issuing in 2000. On the first page of this two page binder are cut out holes or ports with three holes per line, one line for each of 2000, 2001 and 2002. The three holes per line are for the dollars minted at the three mints--Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco. The second page also has the same nine holes but without any dates printed, probably because the US Mint may decide not to mint any of these dollars after 2002. Each line of holes on each page has a clear plastic slide piece which is gently pushed (assembly by buyer) over and under each coin line to cover the coins, front and back, and keep out dust, dirt and corrosion, at least to some degree. Having fifteen of these clear plastic slide, coin-covering albums, I would rank this one on a par with the best in workmanship and layout. There is no doubt in my mind that these albums do protect and display collector coins much better than the older folders in which coins are pressed down into coin holes. Whitman has had a strong reputation for several decades in the production of reliable and attractive coin albums. This Sacagawea dollar album is their latest contribution to their extended history of valuable coin collecting materials.

As a regular on TV's Bewitched, Kasey Rogers (Louise Tate) has the right pedigree to produce Halloween Crafts: Eerily Elegant Decor. She and coauthor Mark Wood have dreamed up some pretty innovative approaches to such timeworn Halloween delights as pumpkin carving, table decorating, and party giving. Rather than limit carving to traditional orange pumpkins, they offer devilish red imps made of bumpy gourds and green glow-stick eyes, or a jaunty goblin king carved of green hubbard squash. A decrepit old butler figure presides over the "graveyard tea," and the "harvest of skulls" centerpiece features a tower of grinning plastic skulls topped with drippy black (electric) candles. A quartet of simple recipes makes up the "Boo-fey," along with two versions of punch contributed by another Bewitched alumnus, Bernard Fox (Dr. Bombay). The home-snapshot quality of the photographs is the one weak spot in this otherwise commendable book. Still, enough details are generally visible to help clarify the occasionally confusing directions, and the step-by-steps are mostly adequately explained. A source list provides contact information for the harder-to-find items. --Amy Handy

4 out of 5 stars Finally--some "adult" Halloween Decor Ideas!.......2006-06-10

I agree with some other reviews that the plastic honey bear & "Aunt Jemima" lights are bit ... uhhhh, cheesey; however, there is tons of other stuff that is very classy and it has great photos and interesting tidbits. Despite a few cheesetastiks, it's still WELL WORTH the price and a must-have for any fan of HALLOWEEN!!!

1 out of 5 stars Not as expected.......2004-09-19

Although this book has one or two interesting projects, overall, it wasn't as wonderful as the other reviews cracked it up to be. I was unexpectedly dissapointed!

3 out of 5 stars Crafty, but not elegant.......2004-09-16

I just got this book and there are some good ideas in it (which is why I gave it three stars), but I do not find the majority of their decor to be elegant.
What's elegant about using a cookie cutter to shape your sandwich like an owl or using the plastic honey bear to make a nightlight?

If you're looking for some adult craft ideas, then this book may be worth looking into, just keep in mind that different people have varying opinions of what constitutes "elegant decor."

5 out of 5 stars Halloween is for adults again!.......2004-09-02

As other reviewers have written, this Halloween decorating book is meant for adults with taste. So often Halloween is reduced (doubtless by the presence of chain retailers that rely for profit on the kitschy) to the garish and silly--think of those stupid "witch-flew-into-a-tree" decorations. Kasey Rogers saves the day with this book, in which you can turn pumpkins into macabre "stone" settings, set up a Goblin King with his loyal subjects, light flickering Gothic candles, and enjoy a "harvest" of skulls. My favorite, though, is definitely the extremely easy to make New England-style tombstones. And next to the elegant nature of these projects, the best part is that nothing here is prefab silliness. Halloween is for adults again!

4 out of 5 stars Great Ideas that are different from the rest.......2004-07-17

I really liked this book. Instead of the too cute stuff you find in so many Halloween idea books, this one has some "bones" to it!Great ideas for using life size skulls to create dramatic light fixtures, the directions are straight forward and easy to follow. I've done several of the skull candle holders and am currently working on the wax dripped candle on the stack of books. It is definitely worth the price for this great book!

This is the book to purchase when you are in the first phase of decorating or redecorating your home. Jennie L. Pugh has given us a book that is logical and aesthetically ordered. Her chapters concerning color schemes for bedrooms are integrated and flow excellently. For a complete remodel of the house we purchased, I felt a bit overwhelmed in having to make decisions for three bedrooms. I looked and walked away from many other bedroom design books. And then I discovered this one. Well lit and encompassing photography. Simple but valuable hints. Quick explanations of what moods and effects colors create. Color swatches you clip from the book to take with you when you start shopping. These are only a sample of what is provided to make your interior design process a joy. Purchase this book and your bedrooms will start to come together!
