Book Description
Alicia Erian, whose work has appeared in The Iowa Review, Zoetrope, and Nerve, casts aside traditional notions of right and wrong and conjures up situations that are at once familiar and unsettling. Her characters—flawed, brave, disarming, affectionate—inhabit the not-so-very-wide space between a good intention and a bad outcome. In “Alcatraz,” we meet a middle-school spelling champion who spends her afternoons taking baths with the boy next door. In “Almonds and Cherries,” a young woman turns an unexpectedly arousing bra-shopping experience into a short film, with ramifications for everyone around her. These surprising, provocative, and deeply resonant stories mark the emergence of a major new talent.

Compulsive reading!.......2007-04-18
I am not a great fan of most contemporary short stories, which tend to be literary to a fault or edgy and cynical to the point of tedium, but I picked up this collection because I loved the title and it gave me great pleasure from beginning to end. Yes, I often wanted to hit the characters over the head, but I always had to find out what happened next, and it always satisfied. The writing is clean and lively and very funny without ever losing its heart, and Erian has a remarkable talent for ending stories on the perfect note. I look forward to reading more from her.
great collection from a stirring new voice.......2004-01-06
let me start by saying that this is the only book i have ever felt compelled to review on this site, and probably will be the only one for quite some time. picking up this book was an impulse buy, as i violated two main rules in purchasing it: firstly, i don't buy authors i haven't heard of; and secondly, i shy away from women in contemporary fiction because i have gotten burned way too much in the last few years. that being said, this collection is one of the finest that i have read in my life. the protagonists are all empowered females, so the book has a feminist flair, but what is most interesting about the presentation is the decidedly anti-feminist undercurrent. erian never leaves things clear cut. when her characters makes conscious decisions that empower them, that allow them to flaunt their power and their sexuality, i found myself cringing because while these are powerful decisions, they are not exactly the right ones, and the characters know it. there is a self-destruction in the exercising of their femininity that is at once wholly new, unexpected, admirable, and tragic. erian's prose is economic and careful, and her stories taunt the reader with abrupt endings and open interpretation. she will end a story right as she leads up to a confrontation that has been building for fifteen pages, and it is here that she empowers her reader, by allowing them to take an active role in ending the story. based on what we have read, we know in our hearts how the story will end based on what we drew from the body of the prose; but our endings will all be different. erian's voice is immediate and achingly contemporary...it makes fare like the canon of oprah's book club seem inept and maudlin. this is power in storytelling. i can't wait for her upcoming novel.
new mary gaitskillesque writer.......2001-08-17
This book is definitely worth reading. The story about the girl losing her virginity absoulutely killed me. I was almost embarrassed while reading it, it felt so real, I felt as though I were intruding on a real person's privacy. For me that is a sign of really good writing. Looking forward to more by the author.
Smart, Funny and Powerful.......2001-05-17
I loved this collection of page-turning, dynamic short stories. Every character is engaging and tangible, and each one is faced with (or creates) situations that are by turns poignant, frightening, and hilarious. I found myself cringing at them, rooting for them, and seeing myself in them. The writer is psychologically smart and her storytelling is skillful; you find yourself drawn into each story with the first few sentences and hooked to the end. I strongly recommend this collection to anyone who likes a good read combined with substance and insight.
Left to their own devices..........2001-04-24
Left to their own devices the women of Alicia Arian's first collection of short stories often willfully set down the wrong path as a way to feel more alive, even if the consequences are dire. Her heroines are self absorbed, masochists but somehow we, as readers, are compelled to stick with them through the ugliness that is all too familiar. Arian delves into the shameful moments that all of us share without moral proselytizing. She engages us through her acerbic wit and an assured hand. One after the other, each of her stories is a tart treat. Damged goods never were so prized.

Super Reader.......2007-08-07
A competent Batman novel. The book is set a few weeks after A Death In The Family. Confused people dressed up as Batmen are set up to be murdered, and Batman investigates.
He is still having a lot of problems because of the death of Jason Todd. When a cult recruiting young people swallows up a police officer sent undercover, Batman asks Nightwing for a hand. Nightwing goes undercover, and encounters a few problems of his own.
The cult leader is a used car salesman recruited by The Joker, who is up to his usual psychotic shenanigans.
another great batman novel.......2007-03-18
Wow, score one for the good guys. This can go down as another fantastic batman novel. Gardner does a fantastic job bringing the conflict of the characters to life. He was able to show the conflict that batman had after jason todd's death and the jokers insanity.
I would recommend this great novel to any batman fan or a reader looking for a story with deep character induced conflicts.
PARTY ON, DUDES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I"M BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very Good Batman Novel.......2006-10-18
I enjoyed this book much more than expected. The well-crafted, complicated (grown-up) plot and dead-on character development made The Batman Murders a novel I could not put down. Even more than some Batman graphic novels, the Dark Night, Nightwing, Commissioner Gordon, and a host of secondary characters were brought to life vividly.
The story is about men who turn up dead at crime scenes dressed in Batman costumes. As the police and Batman try to figure this out, a church called The Church of Perpetual Happiness has appeared in Gotham. This cult-like church has already claimed one undercover officer. Batman asks Dick Grayson to go in. Having a strained relationship with his former mentor, who has just lost his second Robin to being blown up by the Joker, Dick is truly torn whether to help. Batman wants to assist Gordon in all these matters, yet is walking the fine line between working within and outside of the law.
A great story, highly recommended.
Pleasantly surprised..........2000-07-20
Normally I only read large books with complex plots. Occasionally I take a break and read something...well, lighter. This was a quick, fun read. I enjoyed the story and while it was fairly predictable it was never disappointing. If you can find this book, it is a fun read...
Very cool book........1999-12-12
Batman is very overworked in this book. The Joker has a scheme as always. And, as always, Batman is involved. If it weren't for Batman, the Joker would get bored. It occurs to him, well, what about when I finally do kill off Batman? What then? So, he creates his own Batman, and then another. All with the help of a doctor with some brainwashing skills....
It's a great book, with many subplots. BUT, they all come together in the end...

Part two of the timeless 'Skyway' between the stars saga........1999-03-06
Having read the first book, 'Starrigger', finding this next book of the story was like opening a door into true wonderment, so much that I went back and reread the first one....followed by reading this one again! Only after I had finished both that once again set out to find the next book. A very good read...one that stays with you!
Great read, needs first and third in series to fill out.......1998-06-22
This book is a great sci-fi read, but the first and third in the series are critical so that you're not lost. It reads well as a standalone, if you don't mind that fact, but as a trilogy, this book and Starrigger and Paradox Alley make a fantastic weekend read.
Book Description
Three neon-bright layers of cake, tilted at a jaunty angle and adorned with edible chocolate candles; a Jackson Pollock–inspired cheesecake spattered with chocolate, caramel, and peanut butter icing; and a swarm of plump bees perched atop a rainbow of candy-colored cupcakes—these are only a few examples of the unfettered creativity at work at the Riviera Bakehouse. There, mother-daughter bakers Kaye and Liv Hansen turn out some of the most charming, refreshingly eccentric cakes ever to grace a birthday or wedding celebration.
Kaye and Liv believe that a cake should taste as good as it looks, so they skip esoteric (and inedible) decorations in favor of simple buttercream, flavored whipped cream, and tinted candymaker’s chocolate, covering their luscious cakes with amusing designs and gorgeous color that are easy to make and delicious to eat. The cakes themselves are no less enticing, pairing old-fashioned favorites like Banana Cake and Spice Cake with sumptuous fillings such as French Custard and Chocolate Mousse. Simple step-by-step lessons, illustrated with photographs, explain how to re-create Liv’s charming chocolate designs, from the bright polka dots that shine against dark chocolate glaze to the shimmering stars that adorn the enchanting “Starry Night.” Templates for the delightful designs allow you to adapt these techniques to create your own unique decorations.
With time-tested tips and complete information on everything from mixing colors to adjusting pan sizes, the Hansens explain all you need to know to get started. Whether you’re dreaming of an elegant Chocolate Apricot Pecan Torte or a three-tiered butter cake filled with spiked mocha cream and embellished with fantastical spring flowers,
The Whimsical Bakehouse is the ultimate guide to creating delicious, showstopping confections that are completely original.

Had to have it.......2007-09-19
Since I already own an extensive collection of cookbooks, I usually just take a new one out at the library to enjoy now and then. After checking this out 3 times - I knew it was one I wanted to own. Her techniques and ideas for decorating cakes are fresh and fun. Both my grandsons couldn't wait to try them and when I adapted her technique for three dimensional butterflies out of white chocolate "melts" I was hooked. The recipes are easy, clear and can be adjusted to your own taste. A winner.
Extremely useful for me.......2007-07-27
I had never constructed or decorated a multilayer cake before reading this book. The first several pages of this book showed me the basics of how to do it. (After watching Food Network heavily for a year, I never saw these basics there.) The book is easy to read and follow. I have tried several recipes from the book, and they have always been big hits at the parties to which I have taken them.
Terrific book.......2007-07-16
This is a gorgeous book, and the techniques are more accessible than those found in comparable cake decorating books. As an enthusiastic and accomplished home baker, I like to make cakes that taste and look great, but I just don't have time to make a hundred buttercream flowers or learn how to use gum paste. And honestly, while fondant is beautiful, and I did make a fondant cake for my own wedding, nobody really wants to eat it. It's necessary when only a transcendent cake will do, but it's not what you want to feed sweet-crazed children at a birthday party. Or sweet-crazed adults, for that matter.
That's why this book is so great. Most of their cakes are iced in either buttercream or chocolate glaze, and the House Buttercream recipe in the front is easy and delicious - no cooking required, but you come out with a smooth and very light finish. The modeling chocolate decorating technique demonstrated here is fun and not very difficult, and produces adorable results. They also have a terrific chocolate cake recipe. I think I've tried every chocolate cake recipe in The Cake Bible, but they're all too fudgy or too dry; this book has the perfect recipe, light and moist and delicious. I love all of my beautiful decorating books, but if I had to keep just one, this would be it.
cakelady.......2007-06-27
Loved the book, so many recipes and techniques to try, just need more time to experiment with it.
This book is the best value for one's money.......2007-05-07
I bought this book two years ago from Borders, but it was stolen three weeks later. So I bought this same book from Amazon at a better price. What compelled me to buy this book was the color scheme. Kaye and Liv Hansen unselfishly shared wonderful and moist cake recipes. I baked the Chocolate butter cake with Cookies and Cream filling; needless to say, everyone who tasted this cake had so much raves for it. Thank you so much, Kaye and Liv! Your book is a priceless collection in my culinary library.

Wonderful Answer Book.......2007-08-12
We have used this book over and over to fix behavioral problems that have cropped up over the years. From jumping on visitor, to digging up the sprinklers, to jealousy over a new dog or cat. The solutions offered are simple, effective, and easily integrated into our lives.
Just okay.......2007-07-05
I bought this book to teach our newly-adopted adult dog, Toby, how to behave. I was disappointed as it seems that this book (along with the majority of others) focuses mostly on how to teach puppies, not adult dogs.
I think it would have been very effective had I been the intended reader.
Good Introductory Dog Training Book.......2007-06-10
If you are mainly interested in teaching you dog basic commands (sit, come, stay, etc.), or in correcting moderate behavioral problems, all in a humane, non-violent way, then this book will live up to its title.
The first third of the book mainly deals with theory, such as the benefits of positive reinforcement and canine motivation. It also introduces the clicker, which is a small plastic box with folded metal inside that makes a clicking sound when depressed.
The clicker is used to mark the desirable behavior of the animal and is followed by a reward. Purchasing a clicker will be a necessity if you plan to use this book. They can be bought for less than five dollars at most larger pet stores, such as PetCo or Petsmart, and can be bought on amazon for cheaper.
The book then covers housebreaking and how to train your dog to follow basic commands.
Finally, almost the last half of the book deals with behavioral problems, from excessive barking and leash pulling, to mouthing and nipping.
Overall, this is a very good introductory book and will probably suffice for anyone simply looking to train a more companionable family pet, and it does so with the scientifically proven, humane method of positive reinforcement.
The Only Dog Training Book you will ever need.......2007-05-30
The book is very well written and easy to read and comprehend. The dog, however, has a bit more to learn, and I, as his trainer, have my work cut out for me! Thank you for a great book!
Excellent easy-access reference book.......2007-05-15
I bought this for 2 young friends who have a new dog. It is very helpful and accessible even for younger readers. (The girls are 11 and 9).
Book Description
Dazzling and celebrity-filled, this survey of the life, times, and works of Seaman Schepps (1881-1972), one of New York's greatest jewelers, is being published to accompany an important exhibition of his stunning designs. A true original, Schepps created eye-popping jewels that fused exotic materials with a sexy style and captured the imagination of trend-setting American women.
An immigrant's son from New York's Lower East Side, Schepps rose to prominence by creating designs that defied all previous ideas of what jewelry should look like. Witty-even outrageous-and wildly flattering, Schepps's jewelry stood for style more than wealth. Featured on the covers of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Look, and other magazines, it appealed to an enormous range of clients, from the duchess of Windsor to Andy Warhol. Today, more than 20 years after his death, his work has inspired a legion of new collectors, who seek out vintage rings, bracelets, earrings, compacts, and lipstick cases, and the firm continues to produce splendid pieces based on the original designs. This book, and the exhibition it accompanies, promise to bring Schepps's extraordinary jewelry to a new generation. AUTHOR BIO: Amanda Vaill, the granddaughter of Seaman Schepps, is the author of Everybody Was So Young, a biography of Gerald and Sara Murphy that was a finalist for the National Book Critics' Circle Award. Janet Zapata is a historian and curator of decorative arts and jewelry and the author of numerous books and articles. David Behl is a leading photographer of jewelry whose many books include Abrams' Bejeweled.

The Designated Mourner
ASIN: 1566395178 |
Amazon.com
A closer look at the life and literary work of one of the more enigmatic dramatists of our time-- Wallace Shawn, author of idiosyncratic plays and films including the art-house hit My Dinner With Andre, the off-Broadway Aunt Dan and Lemon, and the recently-filmed London hit The Designated Mourner, whose power was such that it drew director Mike Nichols back to the stage as an actor. Shawn manages to be that strange creature, an anti-intellectual intellectual, someone who could write an entire play consisting of a single protracted dinner conversation while showing his impatience at the idea of such a conversation. Things that most writers accept on faith--high aspirations, the need to help others, the desirability of education and reading--are very much on the table with Shawn. Maybe these aren't such good things, Shawn seems to say. I'll dramatize for you exactly where these things can lead, and then try to tell me they're still good. If you come to this book, bring an open mind.
Book Description
Wallace Shawn usually appears in our mind's eye as the consummate eccentric actor: the shy literature teacher in Clueless, the diabolically rational villain in The Princess Bride, or as the eponymous protagonist of Vanya on 42nd Street. Few of us realize, however, that Shawn is also one of today's most provocative and political playwrights.
Writing Wrongs: The Work of Wallace Shawn is a close and personal look into the life and literary work of the man whom Joseph Papp called "a dangerous writer." As the son of the late William Shawn, renowned editor of The New Yorker, Wallace Shawn was born into privilege and trained to thoroughly liberal values, but his plays relentlessly question the liberal faith in individualism and common decency. In an uncompromising way that is all his own, Shawn registers the shock of the new.
In works such as Aunt Dan and Lemon, My Dinner with André, and The Designated Mourner, he wrenches out of place all of the usual, comfortable mechanisms by which we operate as audiences. Perhaps our discomfort and struggle to understand a play might provoke some change in the way we see ourselves and behave in relation to others -- but Shawn offers little in the way of solace.
W.D. King's incisive critiques of the plays and inquiry into the life and times of their author develop a portrait of Shawn as a major figure in contemporary theater.
Customer Reviews:
essential but frustrating.......2006-07-20
There's so much to savor in this book. There's just the right amount of commentary by Shawn himself and the people he's worked with; the plays are placed in the context of Shawn's life, his evolving experimentation as a writer, and his lifelong engagement with the production of live theater; the discussion of little-seen early plays adds considerable depth to the work as a whole; and King's summaries of the plays are generally very well done (with the exception of The Designated Mourner, which he misreads badly in a way that unfortunately many critics have done - then again, the play was still very new at the time).
What remains is uneven and sometimes maddening, especially when it comes to the parallels and divergences between Shawn and other writers. King makes some good points, but has a tendency to pound a vague metaphor into the ground, and gets so carried away describing Shawn as an "anti-theater" rebel that he makes a few clumsy and ridiculous statements (at one point he lumps together O'Neill, Chekhov, Kafka, Beckett, and Ionesco in a single modernist movement that he insists Shawn is entirely separate from); he later backs off from these, mostly. I got the (possibly unfair) impression that the author was not particularly familiar with or interested in experimental theater after 1950, and that this made it harder to explain what's unique about Shawn.
All in all, it's an essential book for anyone who cares about Shawn's plays, but you'll need a high tolerance for a certain kind of overconfident academic writing.
(There's a longer review on my website, A Wallace Shawn Reference, which I must admit owes a huge amount to King's book.)
well-done; quite insightful.......2000-11-27
"Writing Wrongs" is a fine, very helpful book. King does a nice job of laying out the broad strokes of Shawn's dramatic philosophy, while simultaneously providing enough detail about the individuals works themselves. The greatest benefit of King's summaries is their thoroughness. These summaries are not the pat, shallow kinds of things that are far too common in treatments like these. In particular, King's handling of "Our Late Night," a shockingly-hard-to-find play from the early 1970s is to be commended. King's ability to bring forth the biting sarcasm and sagacity of "Our Late Night" is one of the highest points of his book. More generally, I cannot imagine that the broadly outlined, yet detailed approach was an easy balance to strike, and King should be applauded for his facility. I must, however, agree with the previous reviewer that the definitive work on Shawn is still to be written.
Helpful, but not as interesting as it should be.......2000-04-03
We needed a good book on Wallace Shawn -- in fact, we still do. But this is something. The summary of early plays is quite helpful, considering how hard it is to find these and actually read them (besides, on the basis of the summaries of some of these -- particularly 'The Hospital Play' -- I'm not sure I'd want to read them.) And some of the points are interesting, but they seem isolated -- there is no large thesis or vision uniting the book. Still, when Shawn takes hold of you, you want to read everyting you can find on him. The best part is the interview between WS and Mark Strand, which is simply fascinating.
