Book Description
Author Keith Maillard received critical acclaim with his novel Gloria, which told the story of a young woman on the cusp of womanhood in a town called Raysburg, West Virginia. In The Clarinet Polka, Maillard turns that same eagle-eyed attention to the other side of the tracks of that very same town and creates a stunning portrait of Polish America and of one man’s struggle to find meaning in his life and roots.
The year is 1969, and young Jimmy Koprowski returns from his stint in the airforce to Raysburg, his blue-collar Polish American hometown where nothing much happens beyond working at the steel mill, going to Mass, and getting drunk at the local PAC. Jimmy’s efforts at rebuilding his life result in sleeping off hangovers in his parents’ attic and drifting into a destructive affair with a married woman.
But things change when his younger sister Linda decides to start an all-girl polka band, and Jimmy falls for the band’s star clarinetist, Janice, whose young life is haunted by tragic events that happened before she was born. The threads of Jimmy’s family life, the legacy of WWII Poland, and the healing power of music, language, and tradition all begin to converge.
At once gritty and compassionate, moving and witty, The Clarinet Polka showcases the emotional and perfectly pitched voice of a lost soul finding his way.

You must have patience.......2005-03-23
Once I got past the middle of the book (about page 200) the book finally `came together' for me. I cried and laughed and loved the portrayal of the polka band, the Second World War tragedies, the Polish community and the tender love story.
I definitely recommend the book IF you have a lot of patience or if you have some connection to the Polish community in this country or just plainly have some Polish ancestry and know several words in Polish. I was delighted to find in the book the Polish mountain song my father used to sing. I ended up loving a great portion of the book.
However, the book is a mixed bag. The first two hundred pages are almost boring. Here is what you have to deal with in the first 200 pages: A sordid, unbelievable love affair with a married woman that makes no sense and has literally nothing to do with the second half of the book (It almost felt like 'bait and switch'); annoying, frequent use of one expletive (perhaps to give you the impression that the narrator is a simple man??); tiresome detailed descriptions of holidays. All this gave the impression that the author had a list of scenes he felt he had to include, so he stopped the story and presented us with a slice of life, this holiday or this community event, with no justifiable reason. The main female characters in the first half of the book, Connie, the married woman the narrator has an affair with, and his sister Linda, remain two dimensional, underdeveloped throughout the book.
Excellent.......2004-07-26
I loved this book so much. It's got a lot of different things going on: love story, redemption, Polish heritage, and of course Polka music. I'm going to have to find a record by one of the Polka bands in the book. Maillard's easy-going writing helps when he's delving into topics such as WWII Poland and alcoholism. Man, and the way he describes the music and mixes it in with the romance, what a great mix!
Great Book on Many Levels.......2004-07-01
Wow! This book can appeal to people in so many different ways. The book is about a Vietnam-Era vet who returns to a small town in West Virginia inhabited by Polish-Americans. The main character, who spent the Vietnam war in service in Guam, returns to a different country and faces the challenge of reintegrating back into the general population.
That's the story in a nutshell but the author tackles a ton of issues along the way. There are great observations regarding the immigrant community, and the conflict of keeping traditions while being in a new country. He also spends a lot of time regarding the problems of alcoholism and how it can impact relationships with family, friends, lovers and employers. Also, while I wouldn't characterize this as a political book, the time period forces an examination of not only the Vietnam conflict but also of war in general and how WWII affected Poland. Finally, there is a love story in the midst of all this, and he manages to weave it all into the "heavy" subjects as well as great information regarding Polka music.
While there were times the alcoholism of the main character almost overwhelmed this book, the author does a great job of crafting an incredible story. I didn't have high expectations when I first picked up by the book, and instead was overwhelmed by how much I liked it.
Sneaky little love story.......2004-05-21
I was blown away by this book. The voice is singular and never tiresome, the characters are winning and real, and the story moves along like a good horse race. I was completely surprised by the outcome, which made it even better!
A Couple Good Stories in One.......2003-11-11
Maillard does a good job combining the story of the servicemen re-assimilating post-Vietnam with the story of the Nazis' treatment of Catholic Poles in WWII. His book is also a fascinating portrait of blue-collar America, specifically the Polish-American communities in the Midwest. It made me want to look for recordings of the polkas the all-girl polka band plays.

from a Warhammer fan.......2006-12-26
Being a Warhammer fan I really enjoyed this book. I peticularly liked how the author keeps the reader in the dark about the Warhammer universe, just as if you were some superstitious country folk. As the story goes on you discover more and more about truths in the Empire; this was the most enjoyable part of the book for me.
Great genre novel.......2006-09-12
Death's Messenger was a real page turner - quite a quick and enjoyable read. A coming of age story set against the fantastic world of the Warhammer miniatures game (which is in and of itself a lot of fun), the novel does a great job of taking a young hero-in-training and bringing he and his friends across the captivating campaign world of the game. Well worth the read.
Ubermonkey gives thumbs down..........2006-06-26
This should be a two star review...
THE GOOD: The plotline was ok and the writing was fair. If you are familiar with this world then it might be worth it to check out this story. The main character's are moderately interesting, engaging enough so that I kept going until the end.
THE BAD: As I said, the writing was fair. This is not a book you will immerse yourself in. It is a fast read and something to get you by until the book you want arrives. At times I felt like the author wrote this between projects. I felt that she did not enjoy the characters and never really gave them a chance to grow as they should. As I said above, they were moderately intersting but could have been so much more.
THE UGLY: This is part one of a series (two books I think). The problem is that the lead in is so blatant that when I read the last page I thought maybe some of the LAST pages had been torn out. I don't mind books that set up for a series, but each book in that series should still be its own complete story with a plot, struggle, resolution, etc... This book had little of that and the end wrapped up nothing.
Ubermonkey says you should spot this at the store, then proceed to the "M" section and pick up Martin's "Game of Thrones" instead.
Poor writing...Ok story..........2006-04-30
I have never read a Warhammer novel but have been playing the games for about 15 years, if not more, so I am familiar with the world.
When I first started reading this book, I did not like it. I thought the writing was poor and the author was a little too casual and wrote in terms that are too often used. Everything about this book is very basic, from the descriptions to the dialogue to the plot. Reading this book made me feel like the author wrote it on a Sunday afternoon sometime after finishing a crossword puzzle. There were moments when I felt as if the story was coming out of its lull, hence the 3rd star for it was not a complete failure. But in the end, when you read the last page, you realize that this is just an obvious set up for the second part, which does not make much sense since the book is only about 400 pages long anyway. Over all, its an OK read if you're not looking for anything too deep.
Roleplaying with Rudi.......2005-12-10
The book offers a good description of how a warhammer village setting should be roleplayed from the point of view of the main character; a hunter if I'm not mistaken. Come into this book with that in mind. We get a full cast of side characters(NPCs) with various careers as well as a main villain in the form of a cold and callous Witch Hunter. Storywise, it reads like an introduction to a Roleplaying game. Nothing wrong with that but a writer of Mitchell's calibre could've made the gaming elements a little more subtle and less obvious in my humble opinion. So 4-stars instead of 5.

Marvelous Discworld, which revolves on the backs of four great elephants and a big turtle, spins into Interesting Times, the 17th outing in Terry Pratchett's rollicking fantasy series. The gods are playing games again, and this time the mysterious Lady opposes Fate in a match of "Destinies of Nations Hanging by a Thread." --Blaise Selby
Book Description
"May you live in interesting times." -- Ancient Curse
Another outrageously clever installment in the Discworld files, Interesting Times reminds the world why Terry Pratchett is considered the best fantasy and humor writer in the English speaking world.
When a carrier albatross arrives from the Counterweight Continent with an Urgent Request for a "Great Wizard," Rincewind is "volunteered." Along his absurdly delicious travels, he meets a colorful band of characters only Terry Pratchett could compile. Their mission is to either defend or destroy the Forbidden City of Hunghung. The instructions are not entirely clear.
In this international bestseller, the funniest writer in fantasy strikes again with a rollicking tale of murder and mayhem in Discworld.
"The funniest parodist working in the field today, period." -- The New York Review of Science Fiction

The secret of being a successful barbarian is never to be where the enemy's weapon is.......2007-10-04
Rincewind, a notably unsuccessful wizard but a very successful survivor (nearly always by running away at top speed), was the protagonist of the first Discworld novel, The Colour of Magic, and has appeared in several more books since. I can't say he's my favorite character, but this one is pretty good anyway. Lord Hong, a schemer after power in the Agatean Empire (pictured as a mixture of Chinese and Japanese culture) that makes up the Counterweight Continent, has sent to Ankh-Morpork for "The Great Wizzard" (yes, with two Z's), a figure in ancient legends. It's all part of his convoluted plan to become emperor when the current one dies (with Lord Hong's help). As it happens, Rincewind, who acted as guide to Twoflower, an Agatean tourist in his first outing, is the likeliest candidate for Great Wizzard and off he goes to the Empire. Where, of course, because of his pre-emptive karma, he quickly becomes caught up in the power struggle, gets saddled with a not very convincing cadre of underage revolutionaries, loses The Luggage, and crosses the path of the Silver Horde. The latter is a group of six geriatric barbarians led by Cohen the Barbarian (a/k/a Genghiz Cohen), an occasional character in several other Discworld books. Here, Pratchett uses the very straightforward barbarians -- who have gotten to be very old precisely because they're very good at what they do -- as a balance to the scheming, underhanded, poison-preferring, untrustworthy Agateans. And Twoflower reappears, too. Not a great book, but perfectly readable.
Typical Pratchett.......2007-01-10
This was about my 12th or 14th Pratchett novel. I enjoyed it and enjoy his all of his story lines but prefer the character development in Night Watch to that of Interesting Times. As are most of the plots involving the reocurring character Rincewind, there is lots of escaping, vicious villans and amazing magical events that keep your attention. This one spoofed revolutions, revolutionaries and Asian culture. Cohen the Barbarian and the silver hoarde were quite refreshing and represented a style of working man's thinking that has almost died out. This was an good read and up to to Pratchett's usual quality.

Discworld.......2006-08-27
I've decided he's too good and too prolific for me to write a brand new review every single time I read one of his books. Discworld currently has 34 titles and every one of them will probably knock your socks off. His mind bubbles and flashes like a boiling pot of electric eels, and I simply can't get enough of his writing.
A reviewer has compared him to Geoffrey Chaucer. He reminds me more of Douglas Adams, or perhaps S Morgenstern. Great company, isn't it? He's an extremely skillful and imaginative writer, damn funny, clever and observant to boot. He's also very easy to read. A master of characterization, and if there's anything else you like about reading that I didn't mention here, assume I simply forgot. He's awesome.
Another reviewer mentioned Jonathan Swift and PG Wodehouse. Why such hallowed company? Because Pratchett belongs there! Truly, I'm enjoying my quest to read every book in the series. You should do the same, and begin your quest at the library because he's got to be there. He's awesome!
Yet another reviewer said Jerome K Jerome meets Lord of the Rings. Yeah, that works too.
Why do we, as reviewers, compare authors to other authors? Because it's easier than thinking. In the case of Terry Pratchett, it's probably because we'd otherwise wind up quoting the guy. He's so unique that we just don't know how else to cope with his greatness. Even this paragraph sounds like foamy drool raving, doesn't it? That's how all readers react to Pratchett. Reviewers simply don't have the good sense to keep it to themselves.
I could call his writing fantasy, but I could likewise call what Douglas Adams wrote science fiction. In both cases, I wouldn't be wrong, but I'd be neglecting so much and just totally missing the point. A rare few authors transcend a genre to such a degree that you know they're shouting out, loud and proud, a big fat "Bite me!"
I love Terry Pratchett's writing, and I completely understand why some folks refer to him as their favorite author. Or favourite, I should say, since we're being British. He's one of those authors that makes you want to grab whoever's in hearing range and start reading passages aloud. I'm simply thrilled that there's such an extremely talented and prolific author who's been working for years without me being aware of him. Now I have much catching up to do, and I will love it.
One of my favorites........2006-04-14
I love Terry Pratchett, I love Discworld, and I love Rincewind. He's always been my favorite character, and the books revolving around him are my favorite.
I just read "Interesting Times" for the second time, and I enjoyed it just as much, if not more, than I did the first time around.
Rincewind gets sent to the Agatean empire, because the rebels need a "Great Wizzard." He gets pulled into a conflict between the rebel army, the incredibly perfect Lord Hong, and a group of elderly barbarians.
It's Pratchett, so it's funny. I giggled all the way through. Rincewind is just as cowardly as usual. The rebels are very polite. The Barbarians are trying to learn civilization. There's a lot of fodder for jokes here, and Pratchett takes advantage of it.
Twoflower comes back. He's a bestselling author. New characters are introduced. Mr. Saveloy is a former teacher who joins up with Cohen the Barbarian and Company. Lord Hong is a frightening villain. Twoflower has daughters, including a cynical revolutionary by the name of Pretty Butterfly.
And yes, there's a plot. A good one, too.
This is a five-star novel. Read it. You'll love it.

Book Description
In a nation where our love of dogs keeps growing and dog ownership has reached an all-time high, confusion about dogs and their behavioral problems is skyrocketing. Many dogs are out of control, untrained, chewing up furniture, taking medication for anxiety, and biting millions of people a year.
Now, in this groundbreaking new guide, Jon Katz, a leading authority on the human-canine bond, offers a powerful and practical philosophy for living with a dog, from the moment we decide to get one to the sad day when one dies. Conventional training methods often fail dog owners, but Katz argues that we know our dogs better than anyone else possibly could, and therefore we are well suited to train them. It is imperative, he says, that we think rationally and responsibly about how we choose, train, and live with the dogs we love, and the more we learn about ourselves, the better we can recognize their wonderful animal natures. Misinterpreting dogs is a profound obstacle to understanding them.
Katz believes that both people and dogs are unique–a chow differs from a Lab just as a city dweller differs from a farmer–and he describes how such individuality isn’t addressed by even the best and most popular training methods. Not every training theory is for everyone, notes Katz, but almost anyone can train a dog and live with him comfortably. Katz on Dogs is filled with no-nonsense advice and answers to such key questions as:
• What kind of dog should I have? Is there is a specific breed or kind of dog for my personality, family, or living situation?
• What is the best way to train a dog?
• Can I trust my vet?
• How often (and for how long) can a dog be left alone?
• Is it preferable to have only one dog, or are more better?
• What are the secrets to successful housebreaking?
• What are my dogs thinking, if anything?
• How can I walk my dog instead of having her walk me?
• Is it ever okay to give away a dog you love?
• When is it time to put my dog down?
Katz draws from his own experience, his interactions with thousands of dog owners, vets, breeders, dog rescue workers, trainers, and behaviorists, and he has tested his approach with volunteer dog owners around the country. Their helpful and often inspiring stories illustrate how all of us can live well with our dogs. You can do it, Katz contends. You can live a loving and harmonious life with your dog.
From the Hardcover edition.

Living with dogs.......2007-10-09
The title grabbed me and the book was a great read. So many books about training and living with dogs make it hard to see how it will work for you. There are many things that pull at our time and energy so how are we suppose to fit training, walking, cleaning, feeding, medicating, and playing with our dog into family life. Each one of these areas can be researched in depth with contradictory and overwhelming points of view. This book uses the rational approach to allow you to be good enough. This may be uninspiring to others, but knowing that not all good relationships with dogs are all about the dog, inspires me to develop a realistic ongoing relationship with my dog (one that involves a flawed human and a dog). "Choosing, training, and living with dogs is not, ultimately, only a pragmatic process but a spiritual one. How much are we willing to step out of ourselves? How hard are we willing to work to show these simple but wonderful creatures how to share our lives? How much will our patience be tested and to what degree can we rise above that impatience, find the better parts of ourselves, and have the dogs we want, with the lives they deserve?" from Katz on Dogs
Before purchasing this book.......2007-08-20
I'd recommend reading the reviews for A Good Dog. Jon Katz wrote three books about his issues with his border collies. One dog was given to another home because he couldn't cope with it, or train it appropriately; the second dog - the one he made the most money from by writing about - he euthanized because the dog's behavioral problems had become "unmanageable". Based on Katz's track record and other reviews from this book. I wouldn't waste your money.
this guy is an expert?.......2007-05-30
I find it amazing that Jon Katz is writing a book about dog training considering that he gave away one dog that he was unable to train and euthanized the other. And he makes money dispensing advice with this kind of track record?! Disgusting.
good book for general info.......2007-05-28
I liked this book as I have liked most of the books about his dogs that Jon Katz has written.
I have trained dogs professionally for over 20 years and while I don't agree with all of the advice given in Mr. Katz's book, I don't usually agree totally with most trainers advice. I take what works for me and the dogs I train and throw the rest out. I do think that as a general guide it is well worth reading.
Jon Katz is relating his life experiences and how his relationships with his animals is making him a better person. Does he have setbacks? make mistakes? sure he does, as do we all. but unlike most of us he admits his mistakes and hopefully learns from them.
I look forward to many more books from Jon Katz.
He has wonderful ideas.......2007-05-12
I always thought that training a dog was a one time affair. Sit, stay, come heel, good dog all done. Jon's outlook is laid back and comfortable, but he is firm in his belief that to have a good relationship with your dog, the dog must know his place within the household and that means that the dog has to undergo training on a continual basis to establish the proper dog/human hierarchy.
I have a three year old toy poodle who was never properly trained. Why teach a dog that is small enough that you can drag it around wherever you want? This is not the type of dog who will take you for a walk. Since the dog is so small the lack of training never created a real problem. However, since he wouldn't sit or stay on command that created problems because the only way this dog could get treats was to whimper. Have you ever sat through a meal with a dog constantly whimpering? So, I found myself with a dog that I didn't mind but which I thought should be somewhere else.
I read the book and I took Jon Katz's advice to heart and started training this little dog, and lord and behold, my relationship to the dog actually changed. I enjoyed having him around and he seemed to enjoy my company more because I've taught him to be less obnoxious. So far, I simply trained him to sit and stay but this changed the dog's outlook from an ambivalent relationship to a much more structured hierachy. He is probably less confused as to where he fits in the houselhold. The training was not time consuming and I try to do about 5 minutes per day to reinforce what he has already leaned. I still have a lot of training to do with him, but the little I did with him has convinced me that he can do anything (within dog reason) that I have a mind to do. The next training goal for me is to have him come when called and also to walk pleasantly with me without me having to drag him.
Great book. I bought another copy of the book for my daughter who also just got a dog.

Typo-laden.......2007-10-04
Rampant typos make this book thoroughly unenjoyable. It is really no fun to break your brain for 30 minutes trying to solve a puzzle, only to discover that your effort has been in vain because the premise of the puzzle had a typo. I am talking about critical number typos in number puzzles, not little misspellings. Wrong answers. Inconsistencies.
And trust me on this - I'm no slouch when it comes to hard puzzles.
Poor Proofreading = Baffler.......2007-02-16
A book like this really suffers from poor proofreading in the form of typos that make the problems impossible to solve. I have simply found too many typos to make this book remotely enjoyable. In theory a great book of puzzles, but poor execution and attention to detail makes this book a real disappointment.

Book Description
Beautiful, idea-filled room interiors seen in American popular magazines of the 1960s are reproduced here in over 200 color photographs with detailed identification. Readers adapted these designs from Armstrong Cork Company's advertising pages for their own homes. It was customary for Armstrong designers to create rooms that were chock-full of new ideas, as they had been doing for decades. But during the 1960s, the interiors underwent subtle changes in colors and materials which today are recognized as characteristic of this decade. Now these rooms reflected the changing culture in America where homes were enlarged to accommodate growing families and rooms were decorated with an emphasis on being beautiful. At Armstrong, new types of flooring were developed which made vinyl superior to linoleum because of its improved wear characteristics and easier installation. Ceiling materials also were developed to contribute to new room interiors that provided solutions to cultural changes of the 1960s, and from which people today can draw useful ideas.

REFERENCE MADE EASY!.......2000-02-25
As a decorator for one of the well respected prop houses in the Los Angeles area, as well as a student of interior design, I found this book extremely helpful in giving me the direction I needed to finish a project that had me stumped. The book is graphic intensive (which I like)with just a few words written about each photo. I shall use this book without fail for many years to come. Now if I can only find the volume covering the 50's and also the 70's.

Book Description
As Yehuda Berg revealed in The 72 Names of God, hidden beneath the surface of ancient texts are powerful technologies that can transform one's life. In this book, as in his other works, Berg reveals the practical application of a methodology that was once dismissed as superstition. The Red String Book, the second entry in the Technology for the Soul series, reveals the antidote to the negative effects of the "Evil Eye." The Evil Eye is a very powerful negative force transmitted through unfriendly stares and unkind glances. The sages of Kabbalah understood that seemingly harmless envious eyes and looks of ill will are, in fact, anything but harmless. They can actually stop a person from realizing his or her full potential in every area of life. In this authoritative book, Berg takes readers to the source of the cure for the Evil Eye, the Red String, and shows how to utilize this surprisingly simple technology for life-changing results.
