Book Description

THE DEVIL MADE US DO IT.

They say a lot of things about the Devil. But it takes a lot of nerve to applaud him for the job he does...after all, everybody's got a job to do. Meet the Devil and get ready to appreciate what He does best: making sure that good guys finish last. So before you start whining about how unfair life is, just remember that life is life: it's not fair, it's what it is. And when it comes to the Devil's work, it's not personal -- He is simply doing his job, and very well might we add. What's more, the Devil takes a particular pride in what he does best -- and it shows!

So sit back and enjoy this little treat of the Devil and his victims -- or to be more politically correct, his "survivors." Ah, the Devil. Can't live with him, can't live without him. After all, without the Devil, whom would we have to kick around?

Oh, and there's one more treat in store for you. We've arranged the tales by the Devil's geographic sphere of influence -- starting on this side of the Date Line and following His trail into the setting sun, therefore, if you can read the book at a sitting, you'll have circumnavigated the globe in a way that makes you at least a day younger.

5 out of 5 stars Around the world in 13 engaging stories.......2004-12-02

Having read this collection several times now, I can enthusiastically say that it is a fascinating literary account of all that makes us human. Pour's clever characterizations show both the frailty and strength of the human spirit combined with an uncanny ability to take us on seamless trips through time and geography. Plan to read it twice!

5 out of 5 stars An evilly engrossing collection.......2004-10-30

The Closet Devil: 13 Devils In The Old Familiar Places is an anthology of short stories by Anthony Pour, an acknowledged master of macbre fantasy deftly told with a keen sense of dark humor. People say "the Devil made me do it" but no one ever applauds the Devil for his tireless work. Life is not fair, it simply is what it is, and according to The Closet Devil, the Devil himself is just doing his job - nothing personal, it's just what he does best. The thirteen tales are meant to follow the Devil's influence from the Date Line into the setting sun, and his relationship especially with the working men and women who struggle to make ends meet without complaints or whining. An evilly engrossing collection, that will leave the reader rethinking basic assumptions about human nature.

5 out of 5 stars Pick of the month, Bookviews by Alan Caruba Sept 2004.......2004-09-07

There are tons of novels available, but the ability to write a singularly perfect short story is rare. That's why I especially enjoyed Anthony Pour's The Closet Devil ($19.50, Hudson Books, 244 Madison Ave, #254, New York, NY 10016) because in just a few pages he takes you into the lives of the characters he creates, gives you a sense of where they are, and then, at the end, never fails to surprise you. Pour is equally at home writing about ordinary folk or the rich and famous. It is their human weaknesses that interest him and there are plenty to satisfy his wicked sense of humor, mixed with a touch of pathos. Thirteen delicious short stories will thoroughly entertain you. Pour is just one more example of the fact that there are lots of truly talented writers out there just waiting to be published and/or discovered. I recommend you discover him

We used to sit up on the edge of the rocks facing the back of the house to see if we could catch a glimpse of some of the strange things that went on in that house. There would be shadows of who knows what shimmering past the windows, and faint sounds exiting the empty building. Larry Leochko is by far the most qualified author ever to write a book about the Moose House. His first hand accounts with the devil and all the entities that he faced are fascinating. Never before has a story ever been told like this about a town and a haunted house. This true story will live in your heart and soul for years to come. Its very much a must read. It was thirty years in the making. Larry was a Union publisher and editor plus he published newsletters for a local cab company. Larry is also a part time author of short stories. Larry was born and raised in Atikokan Ontario Canada and now resides in Thunder Bay Ontario Canada along with his wife and three children.

3 out of 5 stars Did they ALL have to be funny?.......2007-03-08

Permit me to ask again, because I really want the answer; did they ALL have to be funny? The title is clever, yes, though it depends greatly on knowledge of the previous installments for the strength of its joke. But this anthology would have been better served if more of its contributors had been persuaded to leave it at that. The most egregious offense, given the context, is their portrayal as women. Bound and determined to be funny, the authors either exaggerate female stereotypes (giving us "warriors" who shop compulsively or worry about their hair and nails) or push the pendulum to the other extreme (portraying gigantic, violent women who drink a lot and spend the rest of their time...well, whatever the female equivalent of "wenching" is). Beyond that, of course, are the awful puns that manifest themselves throughout the volume, and, worse, the pun's bastard cousin: the fantasy or historical character who makes a reference to something or someone contemporary (the worst offender here is Turtledove's name-dropping of Matt Drudge in his pastiche of Greek mythology). A writer, especially a fantasy writer (especially a fantasy writer working with a few short pages who doesn't have the luxury of a thirty-plus book series to build his pun-based world a little more logically), has a responsibility to take extra pains to convince the reader that all this stuff is really happening. Instead, they all try to be funny, and most fail at that.

Still, some stories succeed more than others. My take on the contents:

"Myth Manners' Guide to Greek Missology #1: Andromeda and Perseus" by Harry Turtledove: Imagine all the slightly off-putting sexual innuendo of a Xanth novel, but with even less wit; Turtledove should know better.
"Chain, Link, Fence" by Steven Piziks: What to do when you've stolen an item so unique that it can't be sold? Even with its predictability, one of the cleverer of the volume's offerings.
"Fool's Gold" by Elizabeth Moon: Most notable for its treatment of the friction between natural-born dragons and transformed dragons.
"In for a Pound" by Lawrence Watt-Evans: The wife of a potential political candidate stages a guerilla raid on a dog pound to retrieve her husband, who has wandered too far afield during a full moon. Cute.
"Death Becomes Him" by Marina Frants: That staple of Russian folk tales, Baba Yaga, sends her apprentice on a quest. The magical duel is uninteresting and perfunctory, but it's not really the point anyway. Probably the most "serious" story here.
"Straight Arrow" by Susan Shwartz: It can be tough for women in such traditionally male professions as warrior or fighter pilot, but these are strong women, who are able to overcome adversity because they can work together. Because that's what women do. Especially strong women. Which these are. Also, it's a ripoff of Brigadoon. Only with all women. Strong women. In case you missed it.
"Bad Heir Day" by Rosemary Edghill: Amusing take on the Arthur legend; the precociousness of the narrative voice isn't enough to overwhelm the story, thankfully.
"Why Do You Think They Call It Middle Earth?" by Susan Casper: Oy vey.
"Leg Irons, the Bitch, and the Wardrobe" by Laura Frankos: Interesting tale of intrigue in the royal theatre, absolutely killed by the awful title.
"Shiftless" by Josepha Sherman: A married team of shape-shifters takes on a local lord. Good right up till the end, when it tries to get too cute.
"May/December at the Mall" by Brian D. Akers: An interesting setting (a mall out of time) is about all this has to offer; nothing much happens, and when it does, it's over in seconds.
"Yo, Baby!" by Jan Stirling: Hijinks surround an apparent foundling in this story of magical transformation and a usurping Duke.
"Don't Break the Chain!" by Jody Lynn Nye: We get the joke (magical chain letters with real curses) immediately, but it just goes on and on.
"Cross CHILDREN Walk" by Esther M. Friesner: Corruption of politicians and wizards endangers a town. Among the stronger efforts, though the ending bogs down a little in all the exposition and misdirection.
"...But Comedy is Hard" by Kate Daniel: Intrigue surrounds a missing Greek actor and the Amazon charged with tracking him down. Not bad.
"Baubles, Bangles, and Beads" by Kevin Andrew Murphy: Usually an exotic setting (in this case Africa) is meant to cover up a thin plot. Not here; one of the most enjoyable stories in the book.
"Hallah Iron-Thighs and the Five Unseemly Sorrows" by K. D. Wentworth: Two warriors set out to slay a dragon and rescue several missing princes. Falls into a common trap; to underscore the women's heroism, the men have to be a bunch of mincing ninnies.
"Miss Underwood and the Mermaid" by Sarah Zettel": A mermaid and a fairy battle over the hand of a mortal man.

Let me say, in closing, that it's no accident that the most serious and least "humorous" stories in the collection are, without fail, the best. Someone should apprise the editors of this principle for the sake of future volumes.

4 out of 5 stars Much Better than Chicks in Chain Mail.......2006-05-13

Having not liked, in general, Chicks In Chain Mail I'm happy to be able to report that I actually enjoyed this follow up. The stories are definitely of a higher caliber and much more amusing.

In particular I found "Leg-Irons, the Bitch and the Wardrobe" laugh out loud funny due to the theater jokes. As opposed to Chicks in Chain Mail, this entry in the series manages to have a wide variety of stories within the constraints of the rescuing men plot dictated by the title. The definition of rescue may be stretched quite a bit in some of the stories, but it is all to the good and creates a better range of stories.

    Cute! I like the concept.

Men need to be rescued and then spanked for making us go to the trouble.

Eighteen stories of warrior women who come to men in distress. The tables have been turned! This is the second in, what I hope will be, a series. These women may look like "babes" in very little chain mail, but they show themselves to be able to take care of themselves...and other men. My husband and I enjoyed it thoroughly!

These fantastic tales are as fresh and relevant today as they were when they first appeared in the 1940s, the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Theodore Sturgeon’s “Killdozer!” details the liberation of a mutant energy force with intelligence and a will to destroy. “With Folded Hands,” by Jack Williamson, unfolds a terrifying vision of the future where humanoid mechanisms secure “happiness” for all human beings. In a corrupt empire to come, “The Weapons Shop” of A.E. van Vogt’s world may be the only source for legal and moral justice. Plus, there’s an early “Foundation” tale by Issac Asimov, and many other brilliant examples by C.L. Moore, Lester del Rey, and more.

        4 out of 5 stars Decent Anthology.......2001-01-22

This book, which covers SF of the decade of the 1940's, is actually one volume of a series of books on "classic" sci-fi.

The short novels in this book are fair; the volume contains some of the more popular tales (seen in SF anthologies everywhere), and some stories that don't get printed as often.

Interesting note: The Introduction (penned by Isaac Asimov) refers to the work (sci-fi) of the 1940's as "The Age of John W. Campbell", whose work is notably absent from the volume.

        The short novels are:

"Time Wants a Skeleton", Ross Rocklynne; "The Weapons Shop", A.E. van Vogt; "Nerves", Lester del Rey; "Daymare", Frederic Brown; "Killdozer!", Theodore Sturgeon; "No Woman Born", C.L. Moore; "The Big and the Little", Isaac Asimov; "Giant Killer", A. Bertram Chandler; "E for Effort", T.L. Sherred; "With Folded Hands", Jack Williamson

The Golden Age of Science Fiction, from the early 1940s through the 1950s, saw an explosion of talent in SF writing, including authors such as Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, and Arthur C. Clarke. Their writing helped science fiction gain wide public attention, and left a lasting impression upon society. The same writers formed the mold for the next three decades of science fiction, and much of their writing remains as fresh today as it was then.

              R. W. Apple, Jr., of The New York Times credits third-generation Alabamian Frank Stitt with turning Birmingham into a "sophisticated, easygoing showplace of enticing, southern-accented cooking." His southern peers think his cooking may have a more profound sense of place than any of theirs. His food is rustic and homey, but sophisticated in method.

Now, Alabama's favorite son has written a long-awaited cookbook that features his enticing Provençal-influenced southern food. More than 150 recipes range from the traditional--Spicy Green Tomato and Peach Relish, Spoonbread, and Pickled Shrimp--to the inspired--Slow-Roasted Black Grouper with Ham and Pumpkin Pirlau and Pork Loin with Corn Pudding and Grilled Eggplant. Desserts such as Bourbon Panna Cotta and Sweet Potato Tart with Coconut Crust and Pecan Streusel elevate the best of the South for cooks everywhere.

              5 out of 5 stars Amazing cookbook.......2007-08-20

I'm just a regular mom who likes to plunk down with a really good cookbook and try new gourmet recipes to amaze and delight my family. Lets just say that my 3 year old toddler and husband look forward to dinner every night that I pull out Frank Stitt's cookbook. Some recipes make me crazy, especially when I have to flip through 3 different pages to get various related recipes such as sauces, but oh what heavenly delight if you persevere and see the recipe through to completion. I can't say enough good things about this book - makes one appreciate the time, effort and loving care that is evident in the recipes. The sauce gribiche is worth the price of admission. The book feels like an old friend, calling me every few days to try another recipe. What a fantastic chef. This cookbook rivals my other beloved and tattered cookbook " The French Recipe cookbook" by Clements and Wolf-Cohen. You will NOT be disappointed if you get this book. 5 star rating all the way.

Wow!! This cookbook rocks. I've recently bought over a dozen Southern cooking cookbooks and this is the BEST hands down. Frank Stitt's recipes are inspiring. No longer does Southern Food need to be somewhat bland and heavy. I'm ordering my Gourmet Cook daughter a copy for her birthday in a couple of weeks. I know she'll love it.

Frank Stitt's Southern Table is truly a masterpiece. I am a Southerner and was raised on the wonderful flavors that form the recipes in this book. I love that Stitt showcases humble vegetables that can be found at any Southern farmer's market and presents them in impeccable fashion. His philosophy on using the freshest, in-season ingredients is wonderful advice for all cooks. I also keep this book on my coffee-table and I often read his charming writings on Southern food and the culture that surrounds cooking and eating in the South. I recommend this cookbook above all others. My family has adored everything I have made from this cookbook. I recommend the Lowcountry Red Rice, Pimento Cheese, All the cookie recipes, Spiced Pecans, and the fabulous section on perfectly mixed cocktails. This cookbook has got me planning a trip to Birmingham for the sole purpose of eating at the Highlands Bar and Grille.

This is a very thick book on the upscale restaurant Bottega in The Highlands area of Birmingham, Alabama. Soon I intend on actually visiting the restaurant, but until then, this book keeps me in tune with the restaurant. I can make their food at home as well as get a clear idea of the environment, cuisine and patrons who visit.

It's not only American-made enameled ware that's creating such a stir.European enameled ware, with its vibrant colors and spectacular graphic designs, is also highly in demand. A concise text and over 375 color photographs with value ranges offer antiques dealers, collectors, and interior designers a close-up look at the beautiful examples of enameled ware produced throughout Europe and the United States between the late 1800s and 1940. I don't feel useful to type 1000 words here, anyone reading this book will understand all the passion than enameled ware can arouse, and all the work produced by the authors to show so numerous and beautiful pictures. These everyday utensils has been used during decades in so many worlwide houses, but how many housekeepers did realize as much it was difficult to produce ? Who knows the differences between circa 1800's and 1900's items, how to recognize an entirely handpainted pattern from a silk-screen printing just enhanced by hand, or how to get sure than this is a complete coffee jug or unfortunately a coffee biggin without its lid ? A good advice : just read this book, then keep it where you're sure to find it again immediately

"Frank Lloyd Wright's Fireplaces," by Carla Lind, explores one particular facet of the work of this great architect. This book is part of a series of "mini-books" devoted to Wright. But despite the book's small scale (5.25 by 5.25 inches, 57 pages), Lind has packed in a wealth of words and images.

The book contains Lind's insightful text, as well as a wealth of illuminating sidebar quotes from Wright and others. There are many detailed, full-color photographs of stunning fireplaces. There is even a delightful historic black-and-white photo of Wright himself playing the piano near one of his fireplaces.

Houses represented in the book include the Hollyhock house, the Hanna house, Fallingwater, and many others. Each fireplace is a beautiful work of art which seems like an organic, integral part of the home. This book will surely delight fans of Wright, and of home design in general.

                        Book Description

Following an illuminating introduction that explains the architect’s philosophy of design and his approach to interiors, 15 case studies and a selection of other buildings showcase just how spectacular, yet livable, Frank Lloyd Wright’s interiors could be. He never simply constructed an “outer shell” for the building and walked away: he created an entire elaborate layout, and his use of interior space and the furnishings he designed are as startling and attractive as his structures. From art-glass lamps and statuary to tables and chairs to carpets and fabrics, he strove to carry through carefully planned out themes and motifs.

"Frank Lloyd Wright's Dining Rooms," by Carla Lind, is one of a series of "mini-books," each of which spotlights a particular facet of Wright's amazing career. This volume contains many excellent full color photographs of dining rooms and furniture designed by the master architect. Other useful features in the book are Lind's interesting text, a series of sidebar quotes from Wright and others, and a bibliography.

Lind describes how Wright's dining rooms, over the course of his career, mirrored societal changes. Houses pictured in the book include the Rosenbaum house, Taliesin West, Fallingwater, and others. Each photo demonstrates Wright's mastery of color, space, form, and light. If you are interested in the work of Wright or in home design in general, you might really enjoy this book.

4 out of 5 stars For Frank Lloyd Wright fans, this book is a must........1999-01-13

My wife and I are big fans of Arts and Crafts decor and are currently planning to build a timber frame home in which the designs seen in this book will definitely be an influence on our design. The interiors in the book are warm and inviting and are definitely not run of the mill. For Frank Lloyd Wright fans, this should be a part of your collection.

                          Book Description

The House Beautiful reproduces - in its entirety- a book designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and hand-printed at the tiny Auvergne Press in 1897, where only 90 copies of this exquisite artisan book were produced. Wright's intricate drawings surround an essay by William Gannett reflecting on the importance of tasteful design for a harmonious home, and further, how a harmonious home augments spiritual, intellectual, societal, and corporeal health. This beautifully reproduced edition contains an essay by architectural historian Paul Kruty placing Wright's book in the context of the Arts and Crafts movement in America.

                              Book Description

                              A. M. Gibbs provides an authoritative and comprehensive account of the life, career, and associations of one of the most significant and influential literary figures of the modern age. Drawing on a wide range of published and unpublished material, the work throws new light on the complex fabric of Shaw's extraordinary career as playwright, novelist, orator, political activist, social commentator, avant-garde thinker, and controversialist. Images of Shaw's daily private life, and of his tangled love affairs, flirtations and friendships, are intertwined with the records of his prodigiously productive career as public figure and creative writer, in a fully documented study which is both a scholarly resource and a lively biographical portrait.
