The Winter of the World Trilogy (Anvil, Forge and Hammer) stands out as a classic in the Fantasy Genre. In my opinion MSR has succeeded very well to integrate nordic mythology in his writing. Especially the Smithcraft and the Powers wrought in the fire of a Mastersmith are cleaverly written. The Powers come from runes set into the metal. It's description and potential is one I like very much.

As one reviewer said before, MSR is highly underrated. His way with words surpasses many in the field. Highly poetic and --in writing style and tecnique -- matching Tolkien every step of the way.

The second volume is even better than the first.......1999-02-05

The second installment of Michael Scott Rohan's trilogy progresses the story of the apprentice smith Elof. I am reading George RR Martin's _A Game of Thrones_ as I write this, and I cannot help but draw some parallels between the two novels. The strength of Rohan is in my opinion his wonderful use of the English language. The prose is rich, it is a wonderful book just because of it. And the story is very good. In the previous book, our heroes traveled through well-known territory, there was no tension and suspense from that point of view. In this book, they set out in search of a lost people through uncharted territory, and the reader follows their footsteps wondering what Elof and his band will stumble into next. However, Martin's book is tremendous in its characterization. Every character is very realistic, each one seems to be showing a facade to the people around him but is really much more intricate underneath. Although Elof, Rohan's main character, shows signs of progressing as a personality through the first two books, he really is the only one with any real depth. Otherwise, read this (if you are luck enough to find it) and enjoy the wonderful story.

The middle book of his trilogy, it deserves equal praise........1998-05-14

As the one book of the trilogy yet to receive a review, I thought I'd write one, both out of tribute to M. S. Rohan, one of the greatest fantasy writers ever and certainly the most underaclaimed, and because the book merits it on its own. The Forge in the Forest leads the band of friends from the first volume into the great and uncharted forests of ancient powers in their quest to reach the East Coast of their continent. Every page is unbelievably well written in a style in the same echelon as Tolkein. In fact, Rohan's trilogy is in many ways Tolkein's equal. Only the vast scope of Tolkein eclipses this otherwise perfect trilogy.

I love a girl who holds her own and here is Ils, who needs no kind of prettiness to have her place in the voyage. I love a god who misbehaves like one, and here is Raven... I love this book.

I am an American, and also of Japanese background (i.e., born in the States and - unfortunately can't converse in Japanese.) I have an extensive culinary knowledge too with a background in Food Science from UCD. I'm a bit taken a back by the comments from reviewers who state they need more background as "Americans." I've known since a child gobo root, the various seaweed types and other ingredients--I'm in no way surprised that abura-age (fried tofu pouches) is a standard item in bento being such a yummy item--goodness I remember having Miso ALL the time as a kid--and as a kid thinking "again!?". I don't see the same comments for books on specialized/regional Italian cuisine (what is polenta, spaghetti, Parmesan Regiano, Italian parsley--because for Westerners, focusing on Americans of European background this is all obvious--Imagine a newly immigrated person from a non-European country trying to follow an "American" recipe and not being given details of say the difference between cake flour, regular flour, bread flour--or even using the tags of winter and spring wheat flour? Or unsalted (also called sweet!) butter and "butter" (also called salted butter!) or for other European cuisines -- what's Brie vs. Camembert, or buttermilk? corned beef? If you want to learn the foods of other nations, you need to start with the basic cook books of that nation--here you will find more details about ingredients, etc. Specialty books like this will assume rudimentary knowledge, just like a specialty book in Italian food will assume you know the difference between Parmesan, Assiago cheeses or capellini and linguini and you know what Arborio rice is without explanation. My recommendation for those less versed in Japanese cuisine is "The Joy of Japanese Cooking" (and like the western version--lacking on photos/drawings) and "A Dictionary of Japanese Food:Ingredients & Culture." Once you learn the lingo, everyday Japanese cooking is really no big deal. For example, all them seaweeds are dried and stay in your pantry for a year. I buy abura-age fresh then throw them in the freezer and take one out at a time as needed--if you don't have a market that sells fresh abura-age you can substitute slice firm tofu seasoned with soy sauce (aka shoyu) that's been pan fried (with or without oil) or toasted until brown in a toaster oven.
Don't give up! Everyday Japanese cuisine is not difficult... just a learning curve like any other cuisine you're not familiar with!

This book has quick and easy Japanese recipes in one or 2 person servings. It is meant for making lunches packed on the go daily, so each recipe is meant to fill one box. So even if you're not packing bento, this book is great for quick small portioned meals to eat right away as well. Perfect if you live alone or if it's just two of you. For larger families, you'll have to upscale, or make more than one meal! I look to this book not only for bento packing, but also when there is not much time to cook or prepare and I'm hungry right now.

I bought this book based on others' positive reviews, but I was a little disappointed when I finally received it. While this book does have very good pictures, it doesn't spend very much time detailing the recipes or the ingredients, some of which can be a bit esoteric for Westerners (for example, it tosses around words like hijiki, mirin, lotus root, and aburage without giving much advice on what these are or how to judge quality when purchasing them).

In short, it's a decent book, but I think the recipes could have been better written.

This is a wonderful book full of great information.

The author begins by giving instruction on basic dog behavior and how to work WITH the dog to train them. Then she teaches you how to train the dog to have basic "good manners".

The next section is on teaching many different kinds of tricks - from easy "kindergarten tricks" to retrieving tricks to advanced tricks to "go put this in the trash!" and everything in between. She gives very clear step by step instructions on how to train the dog to do each of these tricks.

The last 60-70% of the book deals with behavior problems and how to correct them. While this section is lacking in many other "how to train your dog" books, it is actually the most important information contained in the whole volume. Unless an owner can teach their dog not to engage in destructive or aggressive behaviors, it isn't going to matter whether the dog can sit on command or not - the owner is still going to be unhappy. She includes a wealth of tips and ideas for helping with all the common behavior problems.

This lady really knows her dogs. In addition, her writing style is engaging and easy to read - very enjoyable. I've read a ton of dog training books and I think this one is by far the best and most practical. You won't regret buying this book!

We got our first puppy a few months ago and really didn't know where to start as far as how to train her to do tricks for guest. This book really helped with how to get started and how to break things down for your dog.

The book contains lots of information, written in a simple, straight forward, plain style.
The book is not comprehensive, but it is a good starter and covers a broad assortment of topics.
The tricks are rated by difficulty and impressiveness.
It even has sections on rehabilitation of troubled dogs.
All in all this book is above average and a good value for the money.

I was very disapointed that the cd/book was so short and incomplete. It didn't even have instructions on housebreaking, which is the highest thing on my priority list. I wouldn't have bought it if I'd known how little I was getting for my money.It's called the Everything Dog Training Book, but it is not.

AN EXCELLENT GUIDE - AND SOMETHING MORE!.......2001-05-23

One quality shared by all really good reference books is that the reader who goes to look something up finds himself twenty minutes later unable to remember his original question.

TOYS A-Z is handy sized and beautifully designed, with a thumb index and hundreds of illustrations of toys, ads, logos. The author is a real presence. Mark Rich has clear interests and an individual point of view. He shows us the story of an industry devoted to providing playthings and is strongest on U.S. toys. The book, in fact is a study of Americana. And an original piece of Americana as well.

If it was twice as long, it would be ten times as good. Ten times as long and nobody who dipped into it would ever be heard from again!

This is a most enjoyable little book. I believe that anyone who can read can relate to at least some of this book. Most adults should be able to relate to the book in its entirety. The author encourages us to appreciate our environment wherever we are. Also, rather than sitting around wringing our hands over the mess the world is in, take action, even if it is only cleaning up a mess in our own home! It is my belief that the author points us in the right direction, in order to make a difference, to improve things where we are. This should definitely be on the required reading list.

Helen Powers writes with canny wisdom of the ordinary things of life, lending a sense of adventure to the most potentially melancholy of topics: growing old, closing up a family home, dealing with sickness and injustice. And she leaves us laughing! Her wit sparkles, and her sometimes politically incorrect gems make me wish I'd said them, She's a pioneer of staying creative in the later decades, and a role model for anyone who's noticed more than a dozen gray hairs on the comb. Short entries make brief reading sessions enjoyable, but you'll want to devour this book, it's so funny and so philosophically adroit. Keep writing, Ms. Powers!
