Written by Giovanni Boccaccio between 1343 and 1345, The Elegy has never before been available in a complete or accurate English translation.

Lady Fiammetta, the first-person narrator and protagonist, recounts how, although a married woman, she falls in love with a handsome young foreigner named Panfilo and, driven by irresistible passion, becomes his lover. Panfilo subsequently abandons Fiammetta and returns to his native land, where his elderly father is said to be dying. When he fails to keep his promise to return, Fiammetta, in what is the heart of the narrative, describes her longings, her anguish, and her despair. A host of contradictory sentiments drive her to desperation and to an unsuccessful suicide attempt. After a time, Fiammetta resumes her futile wait for Panfilo. She finally resolves to seek him out in his native land. Disguising her true intent from her husband, she secures his promise to help her in this undertaking. Addressing an exclusively female audience, Fiammetta warns them about the vicious ways of men. Her whole narrative, in fact, adds up to an indictment of men as both readers and lovers. Eliciting a remarkably wide range of responses from readers and critics, Fiammetta has been variously described as a pathetic victim of male cruelty; an irresponsible fool of a girl; a sophisticated, cunning, and wholly disingenuous female; and, finally, a genuinely modern woman. Whatever judgment we make of her, Fiammetta stands out among medieval women as an ardent and outspoken feminist.

E' un libro che ci viene dal Medioevo e ci testimonia una leggerezza di scrittura notevole. Ho letto questo libro perchè sono appassionata di medioevo ed amo scavare nel passato dell'umanità , poichè questo mi fa sentire tutt'uno con il passato il presente il futuro. Adoro la letteratura italiana e ne sono una profonda conoscitrice , non solo per letture personali , ma proprio per gli studi che svolgo da molti anni. L'elegia di Madonna Fiammetta è dedicata alle donne innamorate , straziate da passione e tradimento dell'amante . In questa opera Boccaccio inizia il tema che sarà uno dei filoni portanti del Decameron.Ciò che colpisce del libro è il sommesso parlare interiore del personnaggio e l'abilità narrativa di Boccaccio.

Blimey, this is bad.......2007-08-26

I've read most of McKiernan's works, starting all the way back to the Iron Tower Trilogy. I have to admit they are getting progressively worse with each new release.

a) As many posters have said, he pads the books with repetitive meaningless description.

b) His characters are stale.

c) Someone must have told him that he needed to increase his readership with women, because he insists on pushing poorly written romances on ALL of his characters. Put a man and a women together in a chapter -- guarantee they will hook up. No matter if they are completely different races and have only just met.

d) Finally, the stories are becoming less interesting. I could put up with a and c above if the story and the characters made up for it. Not the case in this book.

May be the last McKiernan book I read. Time to move on to a new author.

I picked this up since I wanted to try an author that I have never read. I now wish that I didn't pick up this book.

I will say that I did not finish it, after reading up to page 74 I gave up. I could see where the plot was going already and like many others have said the character are just cookie cutter characters.

The worst part, in just the short bit that I read, was the author's description of an area. 71 words to in one sentence to describe an area. That was just the latest one. There were others.

If you like boring fantasy novels that go into the minutest detail of describing an area this book is for you.

I kinda skipped a few pages...........2007-04-02

The story is one everyone has read before, and that at least a dozen times. But no matter how many times I've read these kinds of stories, they've never been painful. Although, a book you dread picking up is a book you should put down.

I've only given up on one book, and I refuse to give up on this one. Even though the first 125 pages are mostly elves walking hither and tither. (These are the few pages I skipped). I mainly refuse to quit because I have read McKiernan before, and he hasn't let me down.

There isn't a lot of action in this book, and when the characters get into philosophy discussions, it gets repetitive. I was not enlightened, and it did not cause me to think passionately about the meaning of life. It merely intrigued me to drift to more immediate concerns: why I am still reading this book.

The characters are plain, (not to mention go-getters in the love department) and I can't say I like any of them.

All in all, I'd say if you're a devoted McKiernan fan, give it a shot. It could be your thing. But for the most part, I urge you to choose another book.

A lot of people have really negative things to say about this book, and quite frankly, i don't think it is the book at all. If you're somebody who can't stand more philosophy and want more action, don't read this series. It's a great series to make you THINK. (*much sarcasm* Goddess forbid)

Don't bother.......2004-12-09

I don't think words can convey how much I disliked this book, but I will try nevertheless. Basically, there is no reason why you should read this book. The story isn't interesting. The characters aren't interesting. The quest is not original. With all the good fantasy out there, and the fact that this one weighs in at nearly 600 pages, there is no compelling reason to pick this book up.

One of my biggest complaints is the characters. The elf is utterly humorless about everything, the pseudo Japanese warrior girl is a worn out warrior stereotype, and the drunk is an irritating whiner. Okay, he likes his booze. We understand this, but the author feels the need to remind us every other page. The quest revolves around a prophecy in which the elf is supposed to gather a group of heroes, each of whom is classified with a description such as "The mad queen's rutting peacock." Inexplicably, contrary to all logic, the characters take these lines literally, actually looking for a peacock and a ferret, as if those would somehow help them defeat an evil wizard. Everyone acts so stupid, and no one catches on to anything remotely subtle for the entire book.

With so many pages, you would think that at least there would be character development, but you'd be wrong. Most of the novel is just blather about travel. "They rode through the hills of Dardoth Ungol, past the River Argol, through the Plains of Tallack.." It's a list of empty Tolkienesque place names, and you never get caught up in the world itself. The plot develops through a series of lucky guesses - they are looking for a mad queen, and one of the characters says "Hey, I know a mad queen", and wouldn't you know it, that's the one they needed. Every plot point is the result of a random guess that turns out to be correct. Some of the characters are likable, but they never say or do enough for the reader to get attached to them. The author also throws in philosophical discussions at one point, but it is all really basic stuff (Do you believe in fate?) and doesn't contribute anything new.

When all is said and done, the only reason I finished the book was out of habit, and it was tough. If you consider yourself to be an intelligent reader, you won't be able to stand this. There are a million better fantasy novels out there - pass on this one.

The Rebels Trilogy was a great edtion to the Star Trek Universe and I think it was a great series. I liked hearing more about Kai Winn and here life during Cardassian Rule. I also Think that Daffyd Ad Hugh is a great writer and has done well with most of his Star Trek books!

This is the best cookbook on Spanish cuisine that I have ever owned. Anya von Bremzen is not only an excellent cook, she is also a fine writer.

Innovative and exceptional.......2007-04-13

I actually collect Spanish cookbooks, always looking for the innovative twists on old classics. I found The New Spanish Table to fulfill this category to the letter. The tidbits and introductions to each and every recipe give hints to actually being with the author as she savored the dish for the first time.
There are old classics like Paella Valenciana which (in my humble opinion) is almost a sacred dish not meant to be "fusioned" with. Ms. von Bremzen gives the best tips to making this famed dish and the secrets and reasons to why it tastes so great in Valencia. I have actually come close to recreating it, only after I followed her advice in this book.
On the flip side, there is a recipe for beet and cherry gazpacho which hails on genius. If you like to try new innovative twists on an old favorite, this is a must try!
There are many, many more recipes to numerous to mention here, and they won't dissapoint!
A true classic cookbook to enhance any serious collection!

This book is amazing. Not only are there many delicious recipes in this book, but the pictures are beautiful. There are many insights into regional customs in Spain. It points out the difference between authentic Spanish tradition versus tourist's interpretation.

I bought this book on a whim because I was interested in Spanish cuisine. I didn't know anything about it but figured with over 300 recipes I could find something I liked. Every recipe I have made has been fantastic. I found the dishes very easy to make even if they involved a lot of steps. Instructions were very clear and easy to follow. The smoked almonds I had actually made before with a different recipe and had so so results. The recipe in this book was much more clear. We bought an ice cream maker to make the best ice cream ever(honey cinnamon!). My parents also have the book and after eating the ice cream they bought an ice cream maker! I like that it combines traditional and modern cuisine. A must for the serious cook.

Spanish Cooking Influence Spreading.......2006-08-10

There are many prominent US chefs who traveled to Spain, loved their cuisine and brought them back to incorporate in their menus and restaurants. For example, Bobby Flay's endorsement of this book on the back cover sold me. Flay is serious Spanish influenced superchef, who uses their cheeses and wines, etc. Then there is the tapas craze from Spain.

All of these and more is incorporated into this almost 500 page volume documenting this Spanish new cuisine which is sweeping the world, and now this culmination of von Bremzen's time in Spain for over twenty years and this marvelous collection of some 300 recipes collected from all over Spain.

There is quite a variety of offerings here, the usual gamut from appetizers to desserts and everything in between done here by regional organization. Some of the ingredients such as cheeses and wines are particular to Spain and might be hard for some to acquire if not Internet users. Some of techniques are somewhat difficult, but the huge variety here allows spectrum of easy to more difficult and time consuming techniques. Sources are provided along with fine Spanish Pantry section help.

Wonderful text with societal and geographical commentary along with fine color photos and chef resumes provided. The section on Tapas history and development is best so far, and such great reading!

This book is a necessity for anyone learning Spanish. Conjugating verbs is one of the hardest things to learn. This book is very useful. It has translations and conjugations of verbs listed in alphabetical order. The beginning of the book has information and practice activities to help with verb conjugations. It also comes with a cd rom that has a couple activities to help you learn. They are not bad activities, but they are also not the best learning tool I have ever used. The book is well worth it though.

Carina Beth MacDonald writes a funny and witty and reasonable accounting for her switch to raw feeding her animals. It is not a thorough book with extensive nutritional analyses. Furthermore, it does not advise monitoring levels of organ and digestive performance; there are better sources for that information. Mostly it's for the dog to appreciate raw food and for getting the dog's human comfortable with not feeling bad using raw bones, meat and acceptable parts in their animal's feeding. It entertained me, who feeds raw but not exclusively so; I could not convince my mother to convert for her dogs but it has inspired her to use better foods and ingredients, including raw mix-ins.

This book is exactly as it describes itself. It gives information on giving your dog raw food - meat and bones as the mainstay of his diet. I read this because I've been searching for information on providing my own food for my dog. While this book has a lot of good information, I decided I was not going to go the raw route - too messy and I worry about bones. In another review I panned a book called Real Food for Dogs. I was very disappointed because it was frivolous and offered food that I do not believe a dog should have. A few weeks later[ The Good Food Cookbook arrived. [ASIN:1592530672 The Good Food Cookbook for Dogs: 50 Home-Cooked Recipes for the Health and Happiness of Your Canine Companion]] This book is much better balanced. The book offers food that is appropriate for dogs and it gives tasty ways of preparing them. I feel this book is somewhere in the middle of Raw Dog Food and Real Food. I recommend you give Good Food a try if you decide raw food is not the way to go.

A VALUABLE BOOK FOR THE BEGINNER!.......2007-06-14

I purchased this book several weeks before I actually started my dogs on the BARF diet, reading it thoroughly and collecting ideas as to what to do and how to do it. I finally started both dogs (13 years old and 9 months old) completely on the barf diet this past Saturday and so far everything is going great! I am now going back and re-reading it besides using it as a reference for several things as I go along. I have read many other barf diet books and I must say that this is the one that I like the most.

What a great book. Easy to read. Informative. Much for the person who wants to customize the raw diet for individual dogs. No "holier than thou" snub of cooked food - sometimes you just can't get raw (traveling, for example). The author has a good sense of humor and a down-to-earth style. She assures you that you don't have to be a rocket scientist to feed raw. You just have to love your dog(s). Two thumbs up!

Thanks to the official publication, in 1993, of all the photographs of the Dead Sea Scrolls (The Dead Sea Scrolls on Microfiche by E.J. Brill, Leiden and the Israel Antiquity Authority), it is now possible for the public to enjoy the same material available to the specialists. The 200 Dead Sea Scrolls translated here are a marked increase on the 62 previously published in the third edition of Geza Vermez's The Dead Sea Scrolls in English. This increase is mainly possible due to the introduction of the fascinating `new' texts, some of which, for example 4QMMT, are still awaiting official publication. The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated comprises an extensive preface outlining the origin of the manuscripts and the aims of the translation. This is followed by an introduction offering a survey of the discoveries and their publication, a brief sketch of the characteristics of the Qumran library, and several interesting remarks on the sect's identity, origins and history. The translation of the manuscripts is organized into nine chapters, each with one or two pages of introduction. It concludes with an exhaustive list of all manuscripts discovered at Qumran. This list has a double function. Firstly, it provides the reader with accurate information of all the existing texts, biblical and non-biblical, published an not yet published. Secondly, it offers basic bibliographical references for the textual editions already available and for the publications which provide information on the texts not yet published. This list is a very useful reference tool and forms a scientific publication in its own right. Originally published in Spanish (1992) the present authorized translation has been prepared by Wilfred G.E. Watson of the University of Newcastle, a renowned scholar of Biblical Hebrew poetry.

Not Just Plain Jane.......2003-01-31

This book needs to be considered alongside _The Dead Sea Scrolls: A New Translation_ edited by Michael Wise et al. Readers who find a commentary advantageous will want to seek out Wise's book. Readers who are ready to look at the texts and make their own comparisons are ready for Garcia-Martinez's book.

Garcia-Martinez begins his book with a short history of the DSS and addresses a couple of the key issues of the DSS such as whether they are a part of a sectarian library. Next comes a thematic approach to the Scrolls. The Rule of the Community and the Damascus Document come at the beginning of the book, but the rest of the un-numbered manuscripts are grouped with other manuscripts of a similar theme.

There are no biblical manuscripts nor are there any Hebrew texts. However at the end of the book are lists of all of the manuscripts and the caves in which they were found.
There lies the real advantage of this book: each manuscript is accompanied by an authoritative bibliographical reference(s) for those who want to know more.

These comprehensive translations are of the non-Biblical texts found from the caves at Qumran, and are useful for anyone interested primarily in the *content* of the scrolls. The hebrew texts are not given in this work (those interested in such should search under title = "Dead Sea Scrolls Study Edition", published both by Brill/Eerdmans), and the Biblical texts are not given (bibliographies are given for these texts-- most often the Oxford series *Discoveries in the Judaean Desert* is the primary source for Biblical texts).

Serious students of Qumran literature will need more than this work, of course, given that some of the renderings given in the book are disputed (debate over the particulars of any given text can be consulted in academic journals and monographs). The book is a solid compilation of translations of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

"The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated" by Florentino Garcia Martinez is the best version of translated Scroll material that I have come across, and there are "others." What makes this translation excellent is the unbiased, scholarly critique. Martinez does a superb job here! There is no "religious" leaning that I can see. This translation is not prejudged in any way, shape or form. This is an excellent reference book for anyone desiring to research the scrolls.

There has been an argument made against Martinez' translation. That argument says that since this translation was first put into Spanish, then into English something was lost in the translation. Not so! Florentino Garcia Martinez is a Professor at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands- a well renowned scholar. If anything, his multiple translations just go to show his intelligence and ability at what he does (he runs the Qumran Institute). This is a reliable and very well written translation!
