The Fantasy Crusher....STRIKES AGAIN! (and I'm still a girl).......2006-07-11

Well...here I am, writing negative reviews about the books I hate...what fun, eh? I figure that people like me will enjoy being saved from books I hate...or something like that! Anyways, sorry to the people who liked this book! This book really didn't keep me focused on it. I kept on getting distracted. I also didn't like the main character. In real life, I would probably kick her. Because...um, BEcause...uh...ANYWAY, the story is also kind of garbled. Maybe the plot thickens in the next one...? I don't know. I don't happen to care, either.It's also not very entertaining. No jokes. No stupid stuff. Just all of this nightcreature-hoopla. Oh yeah...HOOPLA!HOOPLA!HOOOOOOPLA! Okay...I'm done. I gave this book a two instead of a one because the story, at least, has SOMETHING going for it. It may be very small, but it's there. I think...But I'm not gonna waste MY money on it!

AMAZING!.......2006-06-14

This series is spectacular, not only is the artwork amazing, but the storyline and characters are gripping too! And as to the allegations of this being about a girl being groped by her schoolmates, there is absoloutely no sexual content in there AT ALL. Guys don't be put off, there's plenty of humour and action, I'm not a fan of really girly books either but I looooved this. This series really stands apart from the others, it's worth buying even just for the artwork alone. Even if you just buy a cheap used copy to give it a go, this is a definate must. I guarantee you'll be hooked!

This is an absolutely wonderful manga. It may be a bit confusing at times (all the characters tend to look alike) but if you read into it and dont just scan through the pictures it really has a great story line

She isn't just a girl in a swimsuit.......2006-01-22

When I first started reading Crescent Moon, I was hooked. I loved the art, especially of Mahiru in her underwater world. It's so beautiful. And in response to another reviewer. I didn't realise that it was even supposed to be a Shoujo or Bishounen manga. Maybe if you'd finished the book before reviewing it, you would also have noticed that there is more to the plot than "a young girl being groped by all her schoolmates".

All in all it's worth buying.

Wasn't impressed........2005-09-03

Usually a Shonen Ai and Yaoi fan I decided to try a different genre and I wasn't impressed with this Shoujo Title. A young girl being gropped by all her school mates, talking about her period and always in a swimsuit? Not to my liking. I put it down after reading 20 or so pages. No real Bishonen, seriously try Yaoi, this Shoujo genre has nothing to offer to what I've seen.

Sadly, my good friend Pierce Askegren passed away in November 2006. The breadth of his knowledge was truly encyclopedic. No matter what the topic, he seemed to be able to contribute intelligently and knowledgably to the discussion. After reading "Human Resource", I marveled at the level of research that must have gone into his understanding of what it must be like to live on the moon. Pierce was a true original. He'll definitely be missed.

Long, poorly written and flat........2006-01-04

Usually I am known for writing long reviews. Not here. The book wasn't worth the effort. Its sickly cyberpunk. The character is uninteresting, the plot simple, and the stoyline runs too long. Sorry, it's just too dull to even waste time slamming.

Top Notch Sci-Fi.......2005-01-20

Great Novel. Askegren managed a remarkable feat creating a future world that doesn't beat you over the head with the standard "it's better in the future" sci-fi cliches. The moon base the author has created is very much one I could envision in the not too distant future. The characters are interesting and the plot is intriguing even if a tad plodding at times. Especially enjoyable is the character of Erik Morrison. Morrison is the central figure in Human Resource, and again, the author manages to avoid some of the standard cliches. Erik Morrison is a heroic figure without some of the over the top nonsense found in similar novels. I felt as if I knew Erik and found myself rooting for him. Were he a real person and not some fictional character, I'm sure he would prove a remarkable friend or even a world leader. I look forward to seeing what Askegren has in store for this fascinating man in the next installments. Hopefully something good! Recommended.

A good sf novel.......2004-12-10

The moon has been colonized with most of the residents working for Allied Lunas Combined (ALC), a conglomerate of corporations that spy on one another to steal the latest research and development designs. Erik Morrison is the new site coordinator for EnTek, a position he does not want and hopes is temporary.

Morrison's predecessor Roger Caspian works for a rival firm, a taboo under the unwritten rules the corporations have established on the moon. Wendy Sheer of the Halo Base is involved in SETI (sentient extraterrestrial intelligence), who will use any means or method to find an ET out there. She has psionic power that makes people want to please her and uses her skill for intelligence gathering. She, Erik and others seeks Keith Ramirez, who possesses something that everyone covets.

Book one of the Inconstant Moon trilogy explores living on the moon in e minute detail from traveling in domed "atmospheric" cars on the surface to residing underground and critically adjusting to much lower gravity than earth. Though a few readers will feel that this much insight overwhelms the action, most of the audience will be in awe of Pierce Askegren, who obviously has first hand knowledge of lunar residency. Morrison and Wendy are intriguing enigmatic characters who not quite antagonists, but come close at times. Readers who appreciate the depth of life on the moon will anxiously await the next tale from what looks like a terrific miniseries.

Within this book is the best Buttermilk Pancakes recipe EVER, and I've tried about 20 and counting.

The bulk of the book is devoted to artisanal breadbaking techniques, bread philosophy, and some excellent bread recipes. Reinhart is one of the major San Francisco bakers and his recipes, or formulas as he calls them, are very sound and detailed.

A good one but not the best.......2007-05-07

I bought several artisan baking books from Amazon. This is indeed one of the best. Nice recipes and pretty good explanations. I would recommend also Bread: A Baker's Book of Techniques and Recipes. That one has also a intro chapter about bread, flour, types of flour, grains. I like to understand the process when I do something. Not just follow recipes. And Bread does that. It also has a chapter explaining the steps to follow in bread making and what happens in each step.

A good place to start for artisan breads.......2007-03-05

After 30 years I've started baking bread again. I've looked at other bread book with more traditional American loafs and wanted to branch out to more European types of crusty breads. Nothing wrong with the kind of loaf found in Laurel's or in The Joy of Cooking but I love loafs from such bakeries such as the Macarina and Essential Bakery. This book is the gateway. I finished my first loafs of French Bread using the Pate Ferment method from this book and they were fantastic even though I used whole wheat flour instead of white flour. Next some Rustic breads and then on to the Leavin.

The book has a section explaining the techniques but they need to be expanded for the new baker, also there needs to be a better explanation of Bakers Percentages. I've got a copy of his Bread Baker's Apprentice but haven't had a chance to read it yet. If you search of Reinhart on the Web you'll find his blog and note that he is working on a book for baking with whole grains. I look forward to it.

Take your time, follow the directions. Use good ingredients and learn the lessons found in your bread and this book will be well worth the price.

Resurrected Baker.......2007-01-09

I had purchased a similar book 4 years ago but ended up putting it aside due to it's complexity for the average amateur baker. This one is right on target and easy to follow. I'm making great breads that my fellow 'Foodies' at work are enjoying testing on a regular basis. I even have a crappy oven and am able to put out wonderful crusty breads.
Thank-you for bridging the gap! I highly recommend this book even to novices who want to get serious about breads.

Truly the best bread cookbook.......2007-01-04

When I wanted to expand my reach to include baking the bread that I serve, this book was suggested to me by a pastry chef friend, as the one that he had used in his kitchen. Truly a great book with the science and back ground that is needed to make profession quality breads. Sponge starter, dry starter and quick breads are all covered in great detail. I have used it over and over again, and also used it as a jumping off point to experiment on my own.

I purchased this for my mom for her birthday, along with a few other arranging books. I have done this for the last few years. This book, in particular, explained reasons for certain style elements she'd never heard. She is a 15+ year professional designer who regularly attends professional seminars on modern style & emerging trends.

I can't say that I have an opinion on the book, but as a gift, this book earned kudos by the designer that no past books have earned.

This book was very useful. However, it doesn't cover each state in depth, so if you are just visiting one state, you might look for a more comprehensive guide for that state.

Where Is The Wisdom?.......2001-02-09

I bought this book thinking I'd get a huge list of all of the wisdom of Confucius. But that was the least of what I got. I'm sure there is some wisdome in this book somewhere but the conversation and wording is terrible. It took me 10 minutes read a page, and read again, because I truly had no idea what was going on. Every once in a while, you will come across a straightforward statement that really means something. I'm thinking that this translation does a direct translation to English and it just doesn't fit together well.

I think it may be my own intelligence that keeps me from following the wording of this book. Nothing sticks out as great wisdom to me. There is a section that has poems, which are really good, but they don't show me great wisdom. I believe that this book is only for advanced readers.

Excellent book on the "wisdom" of Confucius.......2001-01-04

This is a very good book on the "wisdom" of Confucius, but not the word-by-word translation of the original Confucius text. Some readers maybe misunderstood in the first place when they read this book. Chinese philosophy is sometimes hard to be really understood at first because it's very deep and profound. Wisdom is not a practical skill that people can learn or master quickly, but something can only be gradually experienced and understood over time.

A "One Book" Survey of Confucius.......2000-08-24

I found this book readable and surprisingly useful. True, the Analects are not complete but have been excerpted. The book cannot present more than a sampling of Confucius' writings for obvious limitations of space. Merits of the book include its readability, with a long, discursive essay and some translations provided by the celebrated scholar Lin Yutang. The book also contains a famous Chinese biography of Confucius, plus a few selections from the writings of Confucius's most influencial disciples-- some of these contemporary with Confucius and some from later times.

I could not help noticing prior reviews that deal harshly with the book. Some of the criticism will not be meaningful to the nonscholarly reader, who, for example, would not be offended that the "original numbering" of the Analects has been abandoned.

Selection of the writings has been most judicious. For example, the book contains "On the Great Learning," and "On Education." To obtain all these well-chosen sample writings of Confucius in individual editions rather than an anthology such as this would require an entire shelf of books.

This readable, clean edition will be excellent for the thoughtful person who wants to explore across the breadth of Confucius's thought. And despite biting criticism in the other reviews, I found Professor Lin's discussions of Confucius's life, thought, and cultural impact to be most helpful.

The book is also a handsome little volume, and with a quality binding. One is proud to place it in one's library.

A fine introduction.......1999-12-29

I'm a beginner to the study of Confucianism with a good deal of amateur knowledge of religion and philosophy, and I found this book highly informative and readable -- it can certainly hold its own with some more recent translations I've read. The most correct and useful numbering and organization of the passages in Confucian originals seems to be a matter of much debate, this is as good as any other I've seen.

Worthless.......1999-10-11

A disastrous work that perpetuates misinformation bout Confucius' life, strips the numbering off the Analects, loses half of them and throws the rest into a jumbled order presumably meant to read as a flowing narrative. Includes contemporary language, but many terms and phrases are badly chosen and clash with the overall tone of the work. Some passages are badly distorted; most of them read like dubbed dialogue in a martial-arts movie. Not recommended for anyone or anything, except as an example of what not to do. Wade-Giles romanization.
