5 out of 5 stars Is this book for you?.......2007-06-15

I have read all three books and they have been among the best I have read. But whether or not you will find it just as good depends on what you're looking for. For those of you looking for a quick, light, and amusing read, these books might not be what you're looking for. The plots in this story are extremely intricate, and the characters even more so. This isn't to say that the plots develop slowly. Although they are intricate, they aren't inappropriately long or drawn out. Fancher paces the changes in the story perfectly - she waits long enough to allow anticipation to build up, but doesn't wait too long. Even so, someone who is looking for a quick and dirty read may very well loose patience with these books. And these books are definitely not recommended for those who like simplistic, black and white characters and plots.

But for those of you looking for a dense and profound read - one that will draw you in and absorb you completely - then the Dance of the Rings series is highly recommended for you. The depth of the characters in the story is astounding, and their personalities are so unique and different from one another that it is hard to believe that they were created by the same author. This is no fairly tale story with clear boundaries between good and evil either - Fancher seems to revel in presenting complexities and ambiguities, and these weave into the story in interesting and unexpected ways. The world Fancher presents is well illustrated, but she won't bore you with the overly-detailed political intrigues of an unfamiliar fictional world like some fantasy authors do. She puts just as much time into developing the personal lives of the characters, which many readers - like myself - find more interesting.

Overly simplistic stories bore me, so I was delighted to finally find a story which had plenty of substance for me to munch on. The only thing which confused me at first is that one of the characters is ambiguous in gender (which is where the gay theme comes in), but I caught on as I kept reading. But overall, Fancher blew me away. When I finished the last book the only thing I could think was *Wow*

    2 out of 5 stars diluted.......2006-02-06

(I am not a native speaker, please overlook my style)

If you survive boredom, this book will cause you much anger.

The plot is good, an intricated dynastic struggle set in a strange Renaissance-like world where guns and a sort of magical electricity coexist with a rather primitive economy based on agriculture and commerce. As a matter of fact the setting is one of the main assets of this book, especially for readers who like long complex stories. Many realistic details are given about an economy which counterposes educated and extremely selfish and short sighted merchants, living in the big cities and matter of fact, loyal farmers.

All the main characters, not only the three brothers, are well rounded and interesting, even if I feel like complaining about their being -just a trifle too- much bigger than life: the Rhomandi brothers quarrel like teenagers and their aunt is an old unbearable harpy they should have learnt to avoid since childhood: no sensible person, having enough wealth as they have, would be willing to endure her.

If the development of characters is a little flawed, a problem shared by many fantasy authors who seem incapable to develop an entertaining story without exaggerating and one rather easy to overlook, Ms Fancher achieves her worst with her writing.
Many pages are well written, fast, thrilling or hilarious: the author clearly knows her job. Unfortunately she decided her volumes had to find a second use as bricks: of the 560 pages, at least 200 could have been cut with no prejudice for the quality of her work.

Have you ever tried to pour tap water into your favourite drink, let's say a costly french wine? Ms Fancher did exactly this. Enjoy...

3 out of 5 stars Promising start not fulfilled.......2003-11-24

The set-up in Ring of Lightning is quite interesting. Three brothers separated by politics and family conflict, cities powered by magical energies, looming international and internal conflict over the source and use of those magical energies, eldritch beings taking an interest in human doings, historical mysteries, an eighteenth-century style setting . . . This book was a decent read, as there was a certain amount of action and intrigue to draw you in and the characters were interesting enough to make you care about whether they would sort out their problems.
However, the story can be turgid at points, as events are continually reexamined from every character's point of view with the all concomitant wondering about motives, possible courses of action, etc.
There's also the issue of the next two books in the series. If you like Ring of Lightning, you may be severely disappointed by its sequels, as I was. They never fulfil the promise of Ring of Lightning in terms of plot, and descend into psycho-sexual/romantic personal dramas.
So, the first book is worth a look, but maybe you should read reviews of the sequels first to see if you really want to tackle this series as a whole.

5 out of 5 stars Fantasy book in a realistic economic setting.......2003-08-22

The first paragraph of this book is a forewarning that history is a recording of two steps away from the facts through a narrow perspective. And wow does this book throw bunch of perspectives into your face. Okay, maybe just three, and then four by the end, but I have never read a book where you really get into the eyes and mind of the focal characters. Most 3rd person narrations skims the ego and id of the various characters but in Ring of Lightning you are privy to their thoughts, angsts, anger, helplessness, desperations, uncertainties, suspicions, and deepest regrets. The story is of three brothers who are political heirs to a powerful city and its satellites. The two eldest, Deymorin and Mikhyel, are estranged while both loving the youngest brother, Nikaenor, to the point of suffocation.

The story starts out told from the perspectives of Deymorin who view Mikhyel as prudish, priggish, and puppet of their great aunt, the powerful "ringmaster" whom the city depends upon to control the "leys", a source of energy aka oil/electricity. Mikhyel has essentially raised Nikaenor since their parent?s death. Both Deymorin and Mikhyel can't see Nikaenor beyond as a child and treats him so despite his protest. Nikaenor loves both Deymorin and Mikhyel and tries to be peacemaker between them, desperate for a "family." When their great aunt decides that none of the brothers would make adequate "ringmasters" she takes a different course of action and thus setting into motion of point of no return for the brothers; either they work together or be permanently splintered from one another. We are then allowed into Mikhyel's perspectives which are devastating and sad. Ring of Lightning is essentially a character study of all three brothers and their relationship to one another. It is rather intense.

Right now I'm having a difficult time finding the sequel Ring of Intrigue. I can't wait to read the continuing saga of the brothers and the feisty Kiyrstin, her impromtu assassination attempt is one of the funniest I've read. Still, I have a sinking feeling that the author is far from done when it comes to Mikhyel's emotional pain.

2 out of 5 stars Really doesn't live up to potential.......2000-10-29

The Ring of Lightning was built on a potentially good premise- a dysfunctional family using Rings of Power to remain in command. Unfortunately this potential is largely squandered in the book's fluffy and unexciting subplots and lack of a coherent vision.

The portrayal of character relationships among the Rhomandi is the best part of the book. The rest of the plot doesn't have much to it, including an unexciting subplot about a 'leythium' creature (leythium is an electricity-like energy that is the basis of the Ring's power). The deux ex machine ending also disappointed.

All in all, there are much better fantasy books to read (eg LOTR, EarthSea series, His Dark Materials by Pullman). You could possibly buy this book, but don't expect too much.

Are the combined human resources at LIGHTNING ROD SOFTWARE, INC. productive? There is no absolute answer to this question. This report considers the extent to which the company's labor deployment indicators differ from global benchmarks. In this report we consider forecasts of differences between labor ratios and the resulting return on this human investment compared to global benchmarks; the estimation of such differences is commonly called a "gap analysis." What is the ratio of short-term and long-term assets to employee? What are typical capital-labor ratios? How different are these ratios to companies serving the same link in the value chain? What are the average sales and net profits per employee compared to global benchmarks? These and over 50 other indicators of labor productivity are considered in this report. The report does so by going beyond traditional analyses by considering companies competing in the same or similar industrial classification at a global level. The goal of this report, therefore, is to assist consultants, human resource managers, strategic planners, and corporate officers in gauging estimates of a company's human resource indicators compared to firms competing or participating in the same economic sector, at the global level. This report is not about whether a particular company or industry has performed well or poorly in the past or will do so in the future. With the globalization of markets, greater foreign competition, and the reduction of entry barriers, it becomes all the more important to benchmark a company's human resource indicators against other firms on a worldwide basis. Doing so, however, is not an obvious task. First, one needs to find firms competing in the same sector, but not necessarily competing directly with the company in local markets. These firms should not be perceived, therefore, to be direct competitors to the company in question, but simply those that have been classified by various sources (e.g. EDGAR or similar foreign filings), as competing to serve customers in the same link of the value chain, or broad industrial classification, as identified by SIC, NAICS or similar codes. Second, given the international nature of the task, one needs to control for exchange rate volatility. Finally, one needs use comparable financial standards. This report overcomes these issues and gives full human resources benchmarks vis-a-vis worldwide competitors who are present in the same narrow industrial classification. Benchmarks cover labor-asset ratios, labor-liability ratios, and labor-income ratios. Since our reports are printed on demand, the statistics reported are for the latest quarter and are the most up to date available (4 updates are produced each year). Each report provides over 100 statistics and 40 graphs to the reader. This reports is on LIGHTNING ROD SOFTWARE, INC., WEST DES MOINES, USA.

Kids hate it when they're left alone with a Robot Babysitter. And why wouldn't they? You can't argue with a computer program that tells you 8:00 Earth time is bedtime... and then at 8:15 reports that you are in violation of your scheduled routine. "The trouble with you, Babysitter, is that you are no fun," complains young Benjamin McFadden. "I'm not programmed for fun," Babysitter answers. So, Benjamin opens up the forbidden panel on Babysitter's back and programs it for fun. Games! Books! Music! Cookies! Fun is had, but when Benjamin gets tired, the robot does not. Much to Benjamin's horror, Babysitter has become an out-of-control fun machine, wreaking complete havoc on the household as the pages explode with flying basketballs, jogging dice, rolling cups of cocoa, and cavorting chess pieces. Desperate, he calls the Babysitter Help Line, and is told that he must use the Ultimate Password to get his dear old boring Babysitter back. What is the Ultimate Password? Luckily, Benjamin figures it out before his parents get home. Kids will like poring over the comical details in Timothy Bush's artful depictions of a futuristic Jetsons-style home, and will easily relate to familiar babysitter-related sentiments and scenarios. An interplanetary robot romp! (Ages 5 and older) --Karin Snelson

            Book Description

"Drawing or writing, Bush's pen is loaded with wit."

Welcome to the spaceship home of Benjamin McFadden--where tennis is played in spacesuits, books are read in zero gravity, and robot babysitters have eight arms and are preprogrammed to send you to bed at 8:00 p.m. sharp. But the night his parents go to the Rings of Saturn Preservation Dance, Benjamin McFadden isn't ready for bed. Taking matters into his own hands, he reprograms Babysitter, and his own private party is soon underway--until Benjamin is finally ready to rest. The only hitch? Now Babysitter wants to party, and Benjamin must stop the festivities before his parents get home. Timothy Bush takes fun and multiplies it by a million in his most far-out book to date, filling it with fanciful illustrations and a story meant especially for fans who thirst for adventure!

            5 out of 5 stars Perfect Adventure Book for a 6-Year-Old Boy!.......2004-11-24

Wow! My 6-year-old son absolutely loves this book! He loves it when the robot babysitter changes her "attitude" and everything is "fun, fun, fun!" It doesn't hurt when Mom makes the robot sound like a robot, either! It's just a fun book for any little boy (or girl, for that matter!). I can highly recommend this book for the 5-7 age range.

4 out of 5 stars Benjamin McFadden and the Robot Babysitter.......2004-09-24

Mrs. Burton's class read this fantasy book about a boy who disobeys his mother and father and it leads to a big disaster. Benjomin is left alone with his robot babysitter and all he wants to do is have fun. When Benjamin disobeyed his parents and reprogrammed his robot babysitter he got more than he expected. This book is an excellent story for young children and adults. To find out more about his adventure buy this book.

            5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Read-Aloud for All Ages.......2003-08-23

I got this book to read to my kindergartener, who adores it, but my 3rd-grader enjoys it just as much. (Actually, I've noticed my husband slips into the room to listen, too!) We have a great time with the voices, and everyone chimes in on the last word. The story appeals to anyone young enough for a babysitter--or anyone who's ever been a babysitter, for that matter--and the illustrations are wonderful for all ages, with so much creative insanity happening on each page that we frequently have to go back after reading it to savor the pictures for a while longer.

            5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2002-08-17

Imaginative fun, with an exasperated protagonist reminsicent of The Cat In The Hat. My two-year-old loves it, and we have fun doing the voices of Babysitter and the Lady from the Babysitter Help Line.

            Timothy Bush ``gets'' kids sensibilities.

5 out of 5 stars This book is rad, dude.......2001-02-28

Benjamin Mc Fadden and the robot baby sitter are by Timothy Bush. Timothy Bush is a great writer and a good illustrator too. This book is great, it's funny and it's good for a bedtime story for kids the age of 3 to 13. Benjamin is a stubborn boy when it comes to bedtime. The book is about a robot baby sitter that's mean. Benjamin reprograms the robot to be fun. The baby sitter reprograms the other robots to be fun too. Then it gets out of control. Then Benjamin says the password, it's pa... sorry you will have to read the book.

I like the end when Benjamin said " What a weird night. " and Fantastic (the robot cat) said something really funny. Then Benjamin looks like the book is going to happen all over again. I recommend this book to Kindergartners though 6th graders because every one can enjoy it. I think 7th graders won't read it because it's too easy to them.

By the way this book takes place in outer space, you can tell from the illustrations.

The recipes in this book look really appealing and probably are delicious, BUT . . . the calorie/carb/fat, etc. counts that accompany each recipe are wildly inaccurate. For example, the Featherlight Chiffon Cake shows 170 calories per serving with 160 grams of carbohydrates. At four calories per gram, there couldn't be less than 640 calories per serving!! Her Cream Cheese Pound Cake shows only 5 grams each of carb and protein and 9 grams of fat. This must total about 120 cals per serving, but she lists it as 288 cals. per serving. In fact, almost every recipe I looked at carefully had unreliable numbers attached. Here's hoping the editors correct these errors before going to a second edition.

5 out of 5 stars Gluten, Get out of Dodge!.......2007-05-21

Bette Hagman's books are lifesavers and Godsends and I have them all. She makes the art of cooking gluten free and keeping a gluten free kitchen easy, logical and workable. You don't have to separate the wheat from the chaff - just regard the wheat AS chaff and you are on your way to a gluten free lifestyle!

Cooks who follow Bette's methods do work - you will need several different types of flours to make breads and bread desserts, such as cakes. Be sure to freeze your foods because they won't last long. It is also a good idea to cook in portions so as to prevent food from going bad.

Thanks to Bette, I have learned about hemp bread for celiac disease and for anybody following a gluten/casein free regimen and Teff Flour. There are many good websites out there that can direct you to places where you can buy the foods and equipment you need to start enjoying your gluten/casein free life. Bette Hagman is truly a Food Warden. She has given people that much needed Get Out of Jail Free card to break out of the prison of old eating habits and a Passport to Better and Healthier Living. Cheers to Bette Hagman!

My daughter uses this book daily and says she finds the recipes accessible and tasty. If you need to limit or avoid wheat products this is a good cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE Baby Knitwear Patternbook!.......2007-03-29

Anyone that knows me knows that I love to knit baby things. For me to say that I love a baby pattern book says A LOT. If you're looking for adorable designs with intarsia work, or cables that are just enough to accent the "adorableness" factor of your little one without being over powering (like the design on the cover), or if you're just looking for something quick to knit with bulky yarn; you'll find it here.

I love how they offer such different designs, but remain true to creating items that will look adorable on children that are newborns on up to five years of age.

I would definitely recommend this book to a knitter that's at least an advanced-beginner, though. The way some of the patterns are worded, you need to have some solid background in knitting terminology, sweater construction, etc. in order to avoid running to your nearest yarn shop for step by step instructions at certain points.

EXAMPLE: I am currently working on design #6, Buster, from the pattern book and had to come up with my own way of doing the decreases (SSK and K2TOG) for the arms on the back panel because the pattern left that up to the knitter. If you don't know how to work the abbreviations listed in the parentheses, you may not be ready for this book.

As soon as I finish, I plan to post a picture of my completed project under the customer images of this book as well. :-) Other than that, I LOVE the yarn I'm using (ROWAN Wool Cotton, the yarn the pattern calls for), and I'm sure the forthcoming baby boy that I'm knitting this for will enjoy it as well.

                      Happy Knitting!

5 out of 5 stars nice variety of classic designs.......2004-02-14

Many knitting books for babies and kids tend to focus only on color or mostly on testures. This book has a great variety of colorwork as well as textures. There is also a variety of weights of yarn used. So if you love knitting with bulky weight yarns, there are patterns for you, as well as patterns for the people who insist babys must wear things knit in baby weight yarn.

I love color. I love paint. I love decorating. This book is OK but it's one of those European imports, so the settings don't look quite right. And this book has been around awhile. I just found a new book on the subject called Painted Furniture, which is by the Better Homes and Gardens people. Painted Furniture has complete how-to, fresh color and styles, and it has settings and product lists that apply to American homes.

                                  Book Description

This is a dual biography, the story of Louis Esson, the distinguished playwright who has been called ‘the father of Australian drama’, and his wife Hilda, who did her own pioneering in the theatre and in public health. The plays they wrote and performed reflected the drama of their lives: creative angst, intellectual conflict, untimely death, romantic entanglement, jealousy and despair. Yet Peter Fitzpatrick's book is more than a good read. As a critical appraisal of Louis Esson's plays and an exploration of the relationships the Essons had with well known literary and theatrical figures in Australia and overseas, the book is an exploration of a developing Australian culture and identity. It is also about the dynamics of a marriage between two brilliant people, reflecting not only the patterns of gender relationships in their own time, but universal passions and strategies.
