Book Description

Grandma Ollie and her granddaughter Terri have been together since Terri's mom passed away in Grandma Ollie's arms, giving birth. Born with an extraordinary sixth sense, Grandma Ollie knows just when things are going to happen, good and bad. So when her pen runs out the day she goes to enter Terri's engagement into her bible, Grandma Ollie knows something's wrong with her granddaughter, now a prominent attorney living up North. Terri, however, won't listen to Grandma Ollie's concerns. She has a great career, a successful man in her life, and feels like her small town roots are finally far behind her-she's going places and not looking back. But Grandma Ollie is never wrong...

With The Hatwearer's Lesson, the bestselling author of He Say, She Say; Bebe's By Golly Wow; and This Just In gifts us with a heartwarming and high-spirited novel about the lessons life teaches us, the rich histories families share-whether they wear hats or don't-and the memories we carry with us all our lives.

The Hatwearer's Lesson a powerful love story you will enjoy until the very end.
Grandma Ollie was quite a lady.

5 out of 5 stars Pageturner for sure.......2004-06-11

I just finished reading this book. And I must say it was awesome. I finished reading it in two days. Yolanda Joe is a true storyteller. I love to read stories that actually seem like they can happen to you or someone you know. I really felt that way reading this book. And I plan on reading all of her other books as well. Keep up the good work, Yolanda.

4 out of 5 stars A Lesson Can Be Learned By The Young And Old.......2003-11-11

This was a great story of how are ancestors and older generation can teach us if we just listen to their stories. The older population can teach the younger generation how to cook, love and live if we would just listen. Grandma Ollie was trying to teach her granddaughter how to love by using things that happened in her life. The special treat in this story was Grandma Ollie and her gift. This gift was also passed on to her granddaughter Terri who thought it was just a little feeling in her gut. This book starts off with Grandma Ollie getting a bad sign about Terri's fiance. Terri finally is able to read the sign and then all hell breaks loose. All Terri really wants is a chance at Love. She is like the hip new young generation where Terri is doing very well in her career but the clock is ticking for family life. Read this cute little story about the young and the old.

4 out of 5 stars You'll Want to Read this Book Straight Through.......2003-08-11

THE HATWEARER'S LESSON is a powerful story, punctuated with laughter and cemented with tears. My tears, that is. What a sweet, deep truth there is in the character of Grandma Ollie, who has the gift of reading "signs" to predict the future. She tries to warn her very modern granddaughter before she marries the wrong man. This is a modern fairy tale, full of heart, old-timey wisdom, basic lust and the ever-redeeming path to True Love, which never does run smooth (if it did, nobody could write a good story about it). Yolanda Joe has done that. Her voice is funny and personal, and made this reader want to search out all her other books.

5 out of 5 stars A Hatwearer's Lesson.......2003-07-23

This book was an awesome book. Very entertaining I could not put the book down. I read it in a couple days. Yolando Joe is a superb writer. Keep up the work. You guys read her others. Great author.

3 out of 5 stars like the first one, it's mediocre.......2006-01-18

In this book, more warriors are sent from earth to nayve, including jubal. Natac gains another ally, of whom is a dragon named regillix. Sirien's sister, janitha, also joins to fight. Another good but in some ways, bad book. Like the first, there are some sexuality that is described in a little too much clarity. It was boring at some parts too. Still another okay read. Recommended.

1 out of 5 stars It needed better editing and cohesion as a series.......2005-05-16

The book isn't especially good, it's mediocre fantasy at best.
It looks as if the book (if not the whole series) was thrown together hastily to meet a deadline.
In the first book there was a Viking, Owen, and an Irishman, Fionn. At the end of the first book Owen died fighting the crusaders.. but in the second book there was Owen again, alive and well (until he blew himself and the bridge up later on)
Maybe they'll fix a name up somewhere in successive printings, but in any case i've never seen a technical error like that in a book before... very bad form.

    1 out of 5 stars Didn't like it.......2004-12-31

The whole reason why I bought this book was because of two things: 1) the comment on the front cover which said "Fans of Tolkien and Brooks will love this epic fantasy." and 2) because of the great dragon on the cover. I really couldn't read it though. I tried pushing my way through the first few chapters but I found it too tedious to read. I even wondered if this book would be better if I had started with the first book of this series or trilogy (w/e). Anyhow, this book is a bit too, I don't know...modernish?....sci-fi-ish? Another thing I didn't like about this book was the names which really emphasize my above question. Some books are better off left closed.

    2 out of 5 stars Oh dear............2001-10-28

Overall, World Fall did a miserable job in continuing the genious that Circle at Center began. The entire book seems to be in a hurry to get no where. Large scale events unfold far too quickly, but all the events collectively adavance the plot little. Niles moves over some things so quickly that he leaves many obvious holes in the plot. I think Nile's goal was to leave you hanging at the end, but I don't like the way he went about doing it. It came across as if he just ran out of ideas and decided to stop where he was and move on to book three. Apparently Niles was also doing some experiemting with word repetition. He wanted to know how many times he could repeat the word "facade" before the reader would chuck the book across the room. It happend somewhere around number 57 for me. The only reason that give this book 2 stars is that I have enjoyed reading other novels by Mr. Niles in the past, and it pains me so to tear this one apart. i sincerely hope that the conclusion to the trilogy will make up for the disaster of World Fall.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent fantasy novel.......2001-09-05

The world is composed of seven circles with the last one known as Earth and the fourth one called Nayve, a bucolic poster world. Harmoniously co-existing with no knowledge of war in Nayve are druids, fairies, elves and other creatures. Three centuries ago, it was foretold that Nayve was going to come under attack so the druid Miradel called a dying warrior Natac from Earth so he can assemble an army and then fight a war. Although they were victorious, Miradel was killed and was sent back to the seventh circle where she had to live seven lives before she was allowed to come back to Nayve and Natac.

In this time and place, the realm of the lord of the Death threatens the circles. Karlath-Fayd, whose minions are the souls of people who died by violence, wants to extend his dominion. To that end he has under control, although they don't know it, the evil arcane dwarf Zystyl and the leader of the harpies in the sixth circle known as Overworld. Miradel and Natac team up once again with their allies, both old and new to stop the latest threat to their world.

In this second installment of the Seven Circles Trilogy, readers will become reacquainted with friends (and enemies) they met in CIRCLE AT CENTER. Douglas Niles so eloquently describes each circle readers will have a vivid visual image of each land. Fans of Tolkien and Brooks will love this epic fantasy and eagerly await the next book in this series (which can't come too soon for this reviewer).

3 out of 5 stars Things Never Change.......2004-06-24

Being familiar with the Fantastic Four comic (a guy im my dorm had a subscription) I decided to check out this novel. When reading it, I was surprised at how absolutely nothing has changed since I last read the comic over a decade ago. The Thing is still sullen. Mr. Fantastic shows absolutely NO personality. World geopolitical situations are amazingly unresearched. Prince Namor (the backwards Roman) is his usual pompous self as he fends of an assassination attempt and coup staged by his cousin Byrrah (Harry B) and warlord Kreeg (the twisted Greek). But behind the plot is Doctor Doom.

All the elements merge into an entertaining story that illustrates how the Marvel universe has a real tough time resolving situations. Byrrah in his bid for the throne tries to have Namor killed. Namor knows this. Atlantean law says Byrrah must die. But he doesn't. Namor spares him so that he can be a menace later. He is put under lifetime house arrest (we'll see how long THAT lasts). Once again the world knows the evil of Von Doom and refuses to take action. Like, he's dangerous, man.

Even the oddities of Atlantean history a brought forth. Atlanteans who are not yet middle aged at seventy still seem to change rulers as often as the shorter lived air-breathers (us). Also, the Atlantean tendency to think and move in two dimensions, although they are free to move in three, somehow advances the plot. At the end there is a great banquet where the FF cannot partake as they would have to remove their helmets. Overall a silly but fun book.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better Marvel books..........2003-03-14

I don't know who Nancy A. Collins is, but this was an interesting book. The FF were never my favorite (let's all sit around and complain about ourselves), but this book at least makes them likable, unlike most of the comics I read of them when I was a kid. Honestly, this book focuses more on Namor than the FF, maybe that's why I like it more. Everybody pretty knows what there is to know about the FF, and this book does nothing to bulid on that. Namor, on the other hand, is fleshed out more than I have ever seen (although, I only had 2 of his solo comics, and both were boring). This book really focuses on Namor and Atlantis's pasts, presents, and futures. The Atlantean palace coup is actually quite entertaining. This book was more ambitious than it needed to be as it feels rushed and not fleshed out enough (Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic's address to the U.N. comes to mind), but the book is exciting enough to allow you to overlook that. For Namor fans (or anyone wanting more information on this, suprisingly, deep character) should definately pick this book up. FF fans might be dissapointed as the FF's and Doom's involvment are paper-thin at best. I've heard that their other 2 books are even better though, but I have yet to read them.
If you're keeping track, here are my Top 5 Marvel novels so far:
    1. Hulk: What Savage Beast; Peter David
    2. Fantastic Four: To Free Atlantis; Nancy A. Collins
    3. Ultimate Spider-Man; Stan Lee, editor
    4. Spider-Man: Carnage in New York; David Micheline & Dean Wesley Smith
    5. due to the extreme suckage of the other 3 books, none of them deserve to grace the top 5 with these other four, and to even mention them in the same breath as the Hulk and FF books is an extreme act of blasphemy and you should kick yourself in the shin for even thinking that!

    5 out of 5 stars A REALLY FUN READ.......2002-12-06

I have to hand it to Nancy Collins, this book really took me back
to my old comic book days. All I can say is please please write more of them. I know this book is hard to find, fact is i got it at a yard sale. but if you can get a hold of one you wont be sorry.

    4 out of 5 stars SKleefeld's Assesment.......1997-05-12

To my knowledge, this is Nancy Collins' first attempt at writing for the FF. Although the story and characterizations fit very well with the overall feel of the comic book series, I would have liked to have seen her elaborate more on various aspects of the book. While it certainly wasn't poorly written, it is left up to the reader's imagination to embelish Paul Ryan's wonderful chapter illustrations to complete the images of Atlantis, the giant undersea monster, and various other elements of the book. All in all, it is a fun book to read. It fits very ambiguously into the FF's comic book continuity, but doesn't weigh it down any more either. A pleasant departure from the series, capturing many of the elements that make the Fantastic Four "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine!"

5 out of 5 stars Good primer for flexitarians and those who need more fiber.......2007-09-20

I purchased several vegetarian cookbooks at one time once my boyfriend and I made the decision to become flexitarians. This book, more than any other, has helped us make this transition. Yes, I grew up in the south and know how to cook beans & greens and vegetarian chili. This book introduced me to quinoa (my new favorite!) and got me thinking about how to approach cooking in a whole new light. Highly recommended for vegetarians, or even meat eaters who need to add some fiber to their diets. Well written, and the recipies are simple and easy to follow. I wish there were pictures - I'm just a visual person, and I tend to prefer cookbooks with photos.

      5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary book.......2007-08-07

With the exception of ONE recipe, which I found bland, everything I've tried in this book has been exceptional. I use it all of the time.

      5 out of 5 stars A Definite Winner.......2007-01-26

I (James' wife) found this cookbook in a bargain bookstore 7 years ago and found it to be a treasure chest of great recipes using beans, lentils, etc. We own many international cookbooks and I like how this cookbook incorporates international flavor without too much extra work. Most of the ingredients I keep in my pantry. Every Wednesday our family has a meal featuring beans and I have used the ideas and recipes from this book to prepare these meals. My copy of the cookbook is full of bookmarks, I have so many favorite recipes. I have since purchased many more copies of the cookbook to give to relatives and friends. I also know that many of my friends have purchased the book on my suggestion. I highly recommend this book to those who are looking for new ways to prepare beans, lentils, rice, and other unique grains. These recipes can convert the uninitiated to a love of tasty vegetarian cooking.

4 out of 5 stars Practical approach fast recipes great basic book.......2006-08-31

The book has a number of strong points: the recipes are usually low in fat, there are many suggestions for vegetarian dishes but also options to add in meat, every pulse you can think of is covered and a good number of the recipes use time saving products such as already processed barbecue sauce or tomato paste etc. This has its benefits but also, in the case of some items, if you are located in Europe the suggested items aren't readily available. The book extensively covers different types of rice, grains, beans etc, and contains information on soaking and cooking times. There is a large section on deserts, rice puddings and other kinds of sweets with some original suggestions. Overall, however, few of the recipes sparkle with creative flair, many are variations of what you intuitively mix together yourself if you are moderately creative and have a well stocked kitchen. If you are an experienced cook looking for creative and exciting input, i.e. you flick through books and then assimilate suggestions to incorporate into your own cooking you might want to have a look at the Ajurvedic cookbook by Mirjam Gazin Hospodar, which also has many grain, rice etc recipes, however not low-fat and more time intensive than the rice beans and grain cookbook. If you 1) are not experimental when cooking 2) want step by step solid instructions 3) don't like spending ages in the kitchen 4)like healthy low-fat fare 5) want a good summary of grains, rice, pulses and how to treat them and don't already have a book, then this book is a very good choice for you.

5 out of 5 stars Easy and basic but not bland.......2006-08-21

This is the book I have been looking for. I have always liked beans and grains but what to do with them other than tabouli and chili? The recipes are for simple basic food, ingredients that can be found in most supermarkets and I don't need my french dictionary ! I had the Red Lentil Vegetable Stew for supper tonight and it was great!

      Book Description

Listen to and communicate with your horse-successfully

"This is a book for everyone who has ever looked at the constantly increasing list of methods and systems marketed as `horsemanship' and wondered which of the many possible approaches would be most suitable for a particular behavior problem. Gincy Bucklin has distilled her many years of experience with horses and riders into a very useful, step-by-step, hands-on book. Bucklin's writing is smooth and easy to read, and no matter where you open this book, you'll find that her deep respect and affection for both equines and humans shines through."
-Dr. Jessica Jahiel, author of Riding for the Rest of Us

"Gincy Bucklin uses her decades-long experience with horses to answer that most frequently asked question: `Why did my horse do that?' And she comes up with creative solutions that weave together traditional horse handling with the best of modern horse training, including my own personal favorite, clicker training."
-Alexandra Kurland, author of Clicker Training for Your Horse and The Click That Teaches video lesson series

It takes time for a horse to learn everything we want him to know. If we don't make our intentions clear to him in ways that he can understand, or if we don't listen to what he wants, problems may result. Featuring easy-to-follow, step-by-step advice, What Your Horse Wants You to Know reveals how to communicate effectively with your horse to create an atmosphere of mutual cooperation.

What Your Horse Wants You to Know focuses on improving your horse's behavior on the ground, so you can develop relationship and communications skills without the more challenging problems that arise once you're on his back.

Very good reference book. Author presents from the horse's point of view which is how the title reads. As usual, however, the one problem that my hose developed is missing. But that may be expected since horses don't often read.

      5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for All Horse Owners.......2007-04-12

Whether you're a beginning horse trainer or more advanced, and no matter what kind of training you are into, this important reference guide will teach you to communicate with your horse.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book !!.......2007-03-06

Gincy has provided a wonderful resource for all horse owners whether beginners or seasoned experts. No matter what discipline you are involved with, this book will become a favourite. It applies to horses beginning their education as well as seasoned competitors, ridden or driven, and just much loved family pets.

The basis for all relationships with our horses is communication. Gincy explains clearly how to read what your horse is saying to you and how to clearly communicate your instructions to him.

This book, like Gincy's others, is full of Gincy's very perceptive insights into equine behavior and motivation. At the same time, she generously cites highlights from the work of other successful trainers and instructors. She totally understands and loves her subject. She isolates each 'problem' or unwanted behavior, explains what it means and not only tells us how to change it but also what not to do.

For the beginner, this book provides a ready reference to cover hundreds of situations that arise in our day to day association with our horse or pony. For the experienced horse person, it is a compendium of knowledge that is so far unequaled in training literature.

Aside from all that, it is an entertaining read.

        Book Description

This brand-new sourcebook tackles a subject that has become particularly trendy in today’s collectibles market—advertising memorabilia. From tin boxes and ashtrays to cigar cutters and tip trays, the Kovels take us on a historical journey that goes beyond the classic antique Coca-Cola signs we think of as antique advertising. We travel from original Woolworth & Co. signs and Wrigley's Doublemint chewing gum tins all the way to Levi's advertising posters.

This first edition of Kovels' Advertising Price List:
•Defines commercial packaging, company advertising, and country store memorabilia as a collectibles genre
•Offers detailed descriptions and current price listings for everything on the market.

                  Book Description

A journey through intellectual Hell best describes the turbulent life of dissident playwright Bernard Kops. He emerged out of the fifties "angry young man" explosion and quickly established himself as a one-man opposition to the intellectual and political hypocrisies which engulfed the theatre Establishment of that chaotic era. Shalom Bomb takes its name from the author's poem which expresses the personal anguish of living in a dangerous world, while still clinging to hope.
