Book Description
A fascinating exploration of gender issues and feminist agendas of the New Woman movement of the late 1800s.
Download Description
All excitements run to love in women of a certain--let us not say age, but youth, says the professor. "An electrical current passing through a coil of wire makes a magnet of a bar of iron lying within it, but not touching it. So a woman is turned into a love-magnet, by a tingling current of life running round her. I should like to see one of them balanced on a pivot properly adjusted, and watch if she did not turn so as to point north and south, as she would if the love-currents are like those of the earth, our mother."

WHY has Sarah Grand been ignored this century?.......1998-07-05
If you are a Victorian novel aficianado as I am, you should thoroughly enjoy Sarah Grand's sprawling, strange story. The eponymous twins are bizarrely, intriguingly atypical as far as nineteenth-century characters go. Grand gives a picture of feminism in its embryonic stage--the woman was certainly before her time, as are most of her female characters. Fear not, however; this is no simple "men-bad-women-good" tale. Nastiness and nurture are fairly evenly distributed between the sexes. Although the story meanders at times between its main branches, it is well-written and worth resurrecting for the 1990s. My main quibble is that Grand's voice tends to take over at certain moments (especially when she's getting angry about her society). But please read this book anyway, especially for its shockingly non-Victorian ending.

Book Description
1893. Frances Bellenden Clarke was born in Ireland. She married a widowed army surgeon, Chambers McFall, with whom she had one son. They traveled extensively in the Far East. As a New Woman novelist, she became a leading figure in late nineteenth-century feminism of social and moral purity. In 1890 she left her husband, who did not support her ideas and in 1893 she changed her name to Madame Sarah Grand. That year Heinemann published The Heavenly Twins, which immediately became a controversial bestseller in England and the United States. This triple-decker novel in deploring sexual ignorance and hypocrisy in marriage gave a disturbing depiction of a syphilitic wife and baby. The eponymous twins, Angelica and Diablo, served to question gender roles; The Tenor and the Boy is a cross-dressing episode. Contents: Childhoods and Girlhoods; A Maltese Miscellany; Development and Arrest of Development; The Tenor and the Boy-An Interlude; Mrs. Kilroy of Ilverthorpe; and The Impressions of Dr. Galbraith. Due to the age and scarcity of the original we reproduced, some pages may be spotty, faded or difficult to read.

Book Description
Discover the magic inherent in the true story of a man who overcame relative obscurity in a small Mediterranean city and became a cultural icon the world over. In Wonderworker: The True Story of How St. Nicholas Became Santa Claus, Msgr. Vincent Yzermans writes a book for his grandnephew that explains the evolution of St. Nicholas into Santa Claus.
Nicholas quickly made a name for himself with his eloquence, intelligence and generosity. Recognized as a miracle worker during his lifetime, he became known for helping children in need, mothers in labor, and sailors as they traversed the Mediterranean. The modern incarnation of Santa Claus, however, became popularized in the mid-19th century through a poem by Clement Clark Moore called "A Visit from St. Nicholas"-better known as "The Night Before Christmas"-in the Frank Church editorial, "Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus," and in the artwork of Thomas Nast and Haddon Sundblom.
This book will appeal to children from the age of nine to ninety-nine. Anyone who celebrates Christmas-regardless of whether or not they still believe in the existence of a Santa Claus who brings gifts to children around the world-will welcome this informative and eloquent explanation of the true story behind how a humble bishop from Asia became "jolly old St. Nick."

Forget the Grinch.......2004-10-11
Written for a three-year-old grandnephew to read when he is 13 o4 14, this large format paperback is clearly more than the story of the morphing of St. Nicholas into Santa Claus. Yes, that's the theme, and it is told well, but the author necessarily includes a great deal of cultural and church history. Black and white drawings and color reproductions of medieval art are commingled with replicas of soft drink ads featuring Santa. The writing reminds me of maybe a 12th grade religion text, which I wouldn't have appreciated so much in high school. Or it might be similar to something from a Lives of the Saints, though none of those held my interest like The Wonderworker. Put this one on your bookshelf next to Night before Christmas and begin a new tradition.

Great Book!.......1999-07-21
I enjoy all of Alexander Key's books. Ronnie is the blue boy, who has the gift of a perfect memory. He is pursued by sinster men. Not sure where to turn, he finds aid and help with two other special children: Ana Maria Rosalita and Black Luis, both who are in danger because of greed; and Marlowe, who is--well, you have to read it to find out.
This is a wonderful story to spur any young reader's interst.......1999-04-17
I read this book in grade school and loved it! Highly recommended to any young person to start a hunger for reading. It's about a young person with unique abilities that overcomes obstacles with the aid of unusual friends. This would be a great book to bring back to print!
This is a great book!.......1998-08-23
I read this book when I was in sixth grade, straight through in one sitting. It is a fantastic jounrney. I have been looking for this book for 10 years now; since I have had children of my own. If you can, read it!
A favorite! Well worth reading.......1998-07-15
This book is one of my all time favorite kids books. It is still wonderful. Too bad you can't find a copy of it to save your life! It has been long out of print.
Ronnie Cleveland is an orphan. He was plucked out of the orphanage because of his amazing memory and logic skills.
Now he is an entertainer - his hair is dyed blue, he is known as the Blue Boy - and a multimillion dollar corporation is based on his popularity.
One night his world falls apart as a young lady warns him he is in grave danger. He finds she is right. He remembers some things that now cause people to want him dead. And he has to use all his mental power to excape being killed.
He joins forces with the young lady, an invisible voice named Marlowe, and a Puerto Rican native named Louis Black, all fugitives.
This book is simply amazing. I highly recommend it!

Michael Chiarello is the real thing--a nice guy and a great cook, enviably telegenic, and privileged to live in the Napa Valley, northern California's Eden, where he's surrounded by the best raw ingredients and the most enthusiastic dinner guests on the subcontinent. On top of all that, he's absolutely generous about sharing his secrets--and his pleasures--with the rest of us, delivering a warm and inviting new world to the home kitchen.
Casual Cooking is a big, beautiful, and friendly guide to "cooking smart"--that is, by the author's definition, making the very best meal possible in the time available and with the ingredients you have on hand. His recipes, of the Italian cucina rustica by way of California persuasion, are thorough and clear. Without being patronizing, they leave nothing to guesswork. The flavor, the texture, the moisture, the appearance, the behavior of the dish and its synergy with other foodstuffs are all respectfully and lovingly noted in these pages. "Michael's Notes," in red, share the kind of tips and cautions only a tenured chef and terrific home cook would know. Some credit should no doubt go to Chiarello's mom, at whose elbow he began picking up these nuances and appreciations. The illustrations are plentiful and elegant enough to make this a coffee-table book, the content thorough enough to make this a serious working cookbook. --Schuyler Ingle and Joyce Thompson
Book Description
From Michael Chiarello, author of The Tra Vigne Cookbook, comes a collection of recipes on his favorite subject-and the favorite subject of home cooks everywhere-preparing meals for family and friends. These treasured recipes marry the rich traditions of his Italian culinary heritage with the casual style and fresh flavors of the Wine Country. Each outhwatering dish-such as Tuscan Shrimp with White Beans, Chicken with Rosemary and Lemon Salt, and Italian Fruit Salad with Sta Bene Honey Zabaglione-is sophisticated, yet simple to prepare. Gorgeous color images by award-winning photographer Deborah Jones show dishes that look too good to be this easy! The companion volume to his new 26-part series on public television, Michael Chiarello's Casual Cooking is perfect for stress-free weekday meals and spontaneous gatherings of friends and family. It doesn't get any better than this.

great recipes.......2007-09-26
I bought this book because I saw it at my daughter-in-laws and the recipes looked interesting. I have not been disappointed. Just made the zablione with fruit the other night and got raves.
Special recipes... without being exhausting.......2006-10-30
I've grown to love Michael Chiarello's recipes. In the Goldilocks challenge between making a dish "too simple" or "too much work," time after time Chiarello manages to find the spot that's exactly right. His recipes don't promise instant gratification, in the semi-homemade 30-minute style that's become popular recently. But he's also aware that you have something else to do with your day besides cooking dinner.
Chiarello's background is Italian, so a lot of recipes in this book display that influence -- quite a bit of pasta, for example, and a tendency to use olive oil where others might choose butter. But you'd do better to think of it as Napa-meets-Italian, as his recipes aren't the sort of food that you'll find at the traditional restaurant with a red-checked tablecloth and a candle stuck in a bottle of Chianti. The book lives up to its promise of "casual cooking."
Chiarello encourages you to create a pantry of ingredients that you can call upon whenever needed, and I completely agree with that "good cooking in not much time" philosophy. At first, it might sound as though you need to cook three things just to have the ingredients for a single dish, but the pantry section helps you create items that, later, you'll be able to grab out of the freezer or your spice shelf and put into an "instant" meal. For example, we first made his awesome winter panzanella, which uses homemade croutons in addition to butternut squash and brussels sprouts. The croutons are easy enough -- assuming that you already made his bagna cauda butter. (It's basically anchovies, parsley, and garlic mixed with two sticks of softened butter.) But two days after the salad, we made clams and linguine with more of the bagna cauda butter, and *that* came together in less time than it took to boil the noodles. I still have a half cup of the bagna cauda butter in the freezer, just waiting for a day when I feel like more than a slab-of-steak.
The pantry chapter is 30 pages long (including lots of beautiful photos; this is a great eye-candy cookbook), which includes everything from spiced walnuts to a fennel spice mix. The other chapters are appetizers; eggs & sandwiches; soups & salads; pasta; rice, beans & polenta; fish & shellfish; meat & poultry; vegetables; and sweet things. If you want a collection of fine Italian baking, you'll have to buy another book in addition to this one (you notice I'm assuming you'll buy this in any case), as his dessert choices are on the no-big-deal side of Thursday dinner rather than a big blowout feast. Panna cotta, perhaps, or dried fruit compote with Sambuca.
Many of the recipes are extremely simple, in that "perfect roast chicken" way (his uses rosemary and lemon -- and it came out great) but he isn't afraid to provide a recipes for a sauce that needs to cook for hours. He usually includes menu advice (i.e. serve this with roast pork), and some kind of cook's notes, such as the tip that soaking red onion briefly in sherry vinegar will mellow the raw onion taste.
A fine cookbook. Recommended.
Just Buy It!.......2006-01-11
We are serious foodies and particularly love all regional Italian cooking. Admit we are bit skeptical of Italian American recipes but after watching MC on TV (finally got a Food Channel on satellite here in Australia) decided to invest in the book. It is brilliant - every recipes tried has scored a "do again" and the pantry items are great. Even a beginner can follow the recipes and experienced cooks will appreciate the layers of flavour that MC is always talking about. Buy this book - you won't be sorry! Off to buy his latest now....
Outstanding!!!.......2005-11-22
I bought this book because of the lemon rosemary chicken I saw Michael prepare on the Food Network. I made it myself and it was just as good as I imagined. The recipes are easy to prepare and every one that I have tried, I have loved.
Love the Napa Style.......2005-09-11
Michael Chiarello's Napa Style cooking show is one of my top rated cooking shows, and when I discovered his new, you too can cook his down to earth recipes, I just had to have this cookbook. The cook book is very self explanatary, the recipes succinct and the pictures make it all seem so easy. Michael's Napa Style is extremely refreshing in today's lifestyle.

Very Comprehensive.......2007-09-14
This book covers all of the information you need to create your first marine aquarium. It is presented in an easy-to-follow sequence that helps the novice understand what is required to set-up your first marine system.
All you need to get started.......2007-07-10
If you are looking for basic and simple book to teach about how to get started in the Marine hobby then this book is it. As the title implies this book will take you step by step on how to build your first marine aquarium.
It also has excellent advice on what steps to avoid. Whether this advice be from an execution standpoint or in your thinking. For instance I found advice like "Avoid trying to follow conflicting advice from multiple sources." and "Have a coherent plan of your own." invaluable.
This book is also short and concise. Not a whole unnecessary arrogant ramblings that you find in some books.
If you already have freshwater experience after reading this book you should be able to start your first fish only marine aquarium.
excellent for the beginner!.......2007-06-21
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in salt water. very detailed easy to follow and understand.
A must BEFORE YOUR BUY ANYTHING.......2007-06-13
An excellent easy to read total overview of everything you need to get started. I had a 6x3x2 ft tank given to me and had no idea what to do. luckily a good aquarium store guy was on hand. This is an expensive hobby and you cant afford to not follow this book step by step to the letter. I have, and my tank is amazing now. I spend about $200 every 2nd week and slowly have got my dream tank. No loss of fish, no dead coral, correct everything. This book will save you major grief and get the tanking looking amazing.
Want to start a saltwater tank???.......2007-04-19

Exceptional.......2007-04-26
Every now and then you come across a book that you cannot put down for various reasons, be it the storyline, the photos or the topic. This is one of those books that has all three of the above.
It shows in fine colour photographs, and large ones at that, some very very rare militairia "liberated" by vets and brought back home.
All types of trophies seem to have been secured such as Hats, medals, daggers, swords, firearms and uniforms to name a few and all are shown in excellent detail.
Printed on fine glossy paper for excellent photographic reproduction it also shows US soldiers liberating, trading or searching for Third Reich artifacts which I found fascinating.
Collectors from around the world have opened up their collections to the author for a very rare insight into authnetic Nazi memrobilia which few if us will ever see in our lifetime.
I agree with the previous reviewer if you are a collector or do have an interest in the third reich paraphenalia this is a must have and worth every penny
Amazing Collection of hard-to-find and exquisite militaria in one great book!!!.......2005-07-04
This book is a great read-through for anyone who is interested in either militaria collecting or a general appreciation of the second world war. The one aspect of this books that sets it above the rest is its documentation of GI's taking these things back up, which is shown through several example photographs. I reccomend this book, yes the price may be high, but if you are interested in seeing amazing items like Hitler's famous "brown shirt", and a very large selection of other personalities, such as Goering, Himmler, and many others!!! Overall a wonderful book that is a great photo history!
Book Description
The Anchor Embroidery Series offers the perfect introduction to popular embroidery techniques.
Pulled thread is a type of openwork embroidery where the threads of the fabric are pulled back tautly to make decorative holes. This book introduces 27 stitches that can be worked in this way. In addition a further 18 counted stitches are featured that can be used to complement the pulled thread work. All stitches are explained in step-by-step detail.
Sixteen original charted designs explore the exciting textural effects that can be achieved: e.g., coil filling stitch perfectly captures the seeded flesh of a luscious strawberry, while the ripple stitch evokes the gentle waves beneath a sailing boat. Other designs include a basket of flowers, sunflowers and roses, and a dragonfly. Pulled thread stitches are ideal for samplers, and an attractive design is included that would be ideal for celebrating a birth or a wedding.
Product Description
In his huge travel account, Evliya Çelebi provides materials for getting at Ottoman perceptions of the world, not only in areas like geography, topography, administration, urban institutions, and social and economic systems, but also in such domains as religion, folklore, sexual relations, dream interpretation, and conceptions of the self.
In six chapters the author examines: Evliyas treatment of Istanbul and Cairo as the two capital cities of the Ottoman world; his geographical horizons and notions of tolerance; his attitudes toward government, justice and specific Ottoman institutions; his social status as gentleman, character type as dervish, office as caller-to-prayer and avocation as traveller; his use of various narrative styles; and his relation with his audience in the two registers of persuasion and amusement.
An Afterword situates Evliya in relation to other intellectual trends in the Ottoman world of the seventeenth century.
This is a revised reprint of the 2004 edition.

the best self help book i have ever read, helped me make significant changes in my family life. after reading it i will investigate the group called recovery that was formed by the author a. low. m.d.
Good Buy.......2005-09-26
I purchased this book for use at Recovery Inc. meetings. It's helpful over all, but a little difficult to follow sometimes. Each chapter is a transcript of one of Dr. Low's discussions, so that's why the flow seems a bit odd at first, since it's not written specifically for the reader. If you can mentally put yourself at the discussion, it reads fine. Overall I have found it useful.
Book Description
Sounds great Book 1 focuses on increasing learners' intelligibility in English for beginning level students. It teaches learners to discover recognize and use American English word stress sentence stress intonation patterns and high-frequency vowels and consonants.
Customer Reviews:
Sounds Great.......1999-11-23
The instruction begins with the schwa and /I/ vowels, then moves to applying those vowels in unstressed words and syllables. Sentence stress, rhythm, linking, and rising and falling intonation complete the first half of the book. The second half consists of applicable segmental features for beginning students such as past tense verb endings, "-s" endings on verbs, nouns, and contractions, and consonant pairs difficult to distinguish like /r/ and /l/, voiced and voiceless "th," and the voiced palatal affricates. Each chapter is made up of exercises that practice listening, speaking, and reading. Every chapter begins with a listening exercise that has students mark down what they hear from a cassette, and then read back and imitate what they heard. These exercises are followed by pair and group speaking and reading exercises that move from mechanical to meaningful, but only become communicative in the last exercise at the end of each chapter. One nice feature in each of the chapters is the pair activities. These activities are designed to help students discover how accurate their own pronunciation is. Each student has a separate sheet with a different set of information and instructions. The students ask questions, listen, and mark down the responses they hear. The speaker must clearly pronounce the prompted response for the listener to correctly mark it. Then intended responses are compared with marked answers. These exercises, while mechanical, allow students to see how well their own pronunciation is understood and provide opportunities for peer feedback in an indirect and non-threatening way. The other activities center around familiar topics such as the office, the house, city buildings, the calendar, descriptions of people, and leisure activities. Many of the activities are based on simple location questions and answers. While the topics vary from chapter to chapter, the format of the activities remains consistent throughout the text which cuts down on class time used to explain activities. The approach to teaching pronunciation is somewhat inductive. The text explicitly gives general rules such as vowel reduction in unstressed syllables, but it does not spell out more specific rules such as stress patterns for two-syllable compound nouns; rather, each chapter includes sections where students find patterns in and make guided generalizations about the more specific rules. Then they are asked to apply and test these rules in exercises that follow. Rules are learned through practice and familiarization with the English sound system rather than memorization. Sounds Great includes an instructor's manual and audio tape. The instructor's manual includes suggested procedures for the practice activities, answer keys, and a reference list of materials to diagnose students' speech. There is also a list that classifies the practice activities in the student book by grammar points and topic. The instructor's manual also contains a transcript of the audio program. The listening exercises could be performed by the instructor, although, for a class that is specifically for pronunciation, the tape would provide variety in voices and accents studied. Because Sounds Great is designed to practice interaction, the role of the instructor is to provide a model for pronunciation, demonstrate the roles for group interaction, and facilitate the pair and group practice. The instructor could expand on some of the pronunciation rules presented, but the text leans toward the students doing this expansion and discovery on their own.

Proof That Techs Can Talk.......2003-12-05
This is a phenomenal book - not to mention the only real resource out there that focuses on presentation skills for technical professionals. While the book focuses on all technical trades, I recommend it to people continually in my classes on Communication Skills for Technology Professionals through SYSEDCO. If you want to - or have to - give a presentation that non-technical people will understand, this book is a must have.
...and he can write, too........2001-06-29
Joey Asher not only knows about public speaking, he knows how to write. Even a Geek Can Speak is funny and to the point -- it would be impossible to read this and not improve as a speaker. Even people who rarely stand up in front of a crowd will find it insightful and enjoyable.
Even a Geek Can Speak.......2001-06-18
I have to make a lot of presentations for my new job. This book has helped me to be more confident and prepared for my presentations no matter how tough the audience. I never really thought I was a geek, but I think I used to sound like one. This book is very practical.
Have fun, laugh, and learn........2001-06-14
You'll laugh out loud or at a minimum smile at the situations Joey uses to teach you how to be a better speaker. And teach he does. It's the single most readable book on the subject I've ever bought. And I've read dozens. It's a winner!

Different workplaces often kept Austrian singer Lotte Lenya and her husband, composer and conductor Kurt Weill apart, but the two shortened the distance through lively, often humorous correspondence. An unlikely couple, Weill came from an upper-class family and long line of German rabbis, while Lenya was the daughter of a washerwoman and an abusive cabby father. He studied with such masters as Ferruccio Busoni and Arnold Schoenberg; she worked as a child prostitute, dancer; and then singer, without any formal training. Despite their differences and numerous affairs they had profound affection and devotion for one another as this collection of letters, with annotations, explanations, and references by the editors, attests.
Book Description
They were an unlikely couple. Kurt Weill was a German cantor's son, cerebral, well-educated. Lotte Lenya was two years older, an Austrian Catholic coachman's daughter, waif-like, less than beautiful but always appealing to men. She survived the abuse of an alcoholic father, escaping to Zurich and finally Berlin, working as a would-be dancer turned actress. When they met, she was a domestic worker in the home of the playwright he had come to recruit as a librettist. Much to his family's dismay, they married in 1926.
Fiercely independent and yet codependent, Weill and Lenya spent twenty-five years discovering a way to live together after realizing that they couldn't live apart. Weill gave music to her voice, Lenya gave voice to his music. Their correspondence--first in German and later, after their move to America, in highly flavored English--is uninhibited, intimate, and irreverent. It offers a backstage view of German music and theater, the American musical theater in the late thirties and forties, and Hollywood. The letters are candid, vivid commentaries on world events, the creative process, and the experience of exile.
Never before published, this collection reflects the vibrancy of Weimar culture in the Golden Twenties and the vitality that èmigrès brought to American culture. Lenya's unfinished autobiographical account of her life before Weill is also included, along with a prologue, epilogue, and connective commentary. Immensely touching as well as informative, Weill and Lenya's letters preserve a portrait of a memorable love that somehow survived its turbulent surroundings.
Customer Reviews:
Superbly Interesting Correspondence. Read it!.......2007-08-29
`Speak Low (When You Speak Love) The Letters of Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya' edited and translated by Lys Symonette and Kim H. Kowalke is the very first book of letters I have actually been able to read from cover to cover, and that includes attempts to read letters by some of my very favorite authors, such as H. L. Menchen, J. R. R. Tolkien, Ernest Hemingway, and Harold Ross (founder of `The New Yorker'), and all of these people, especially Menchen and Ross were no slouches when it came to writing correspondence.
Like Menchen and Ross, much of my interest in these two correspondents lies in their not being well known in the modern American pantheon of cultural heroes. I get a certain pleasure in `having them to myself', just as I felt some loss when Tolkien was elevated to that pantheon in the mid-1960's, when `The Hobbit' and `The Lord of the Rings' came out in mass market paperback.
Weill and Lenya was the model of a successful show business marriage, similar to that of singer Kitty Carlyle and playwright George S. Kaufmann, long before such pairings became staples of gossip columns and pop magazines and TV shows. To remind us of their background, Weill was the composer half of the team of Weill and Berthold Brecht who wrote three major hits for the Berlin musical stage in the late 1920's. The most famous became known to American audiences as `The Threepenny Opera'. Lenya, at this time, was a rising star actress and singer on the Berlin musical stage, and they were married on 26 January 1926, before Weill's first successes.
The book's subtitle does not make this clear, but all the letters in the book are between the two principals. There are no other correspondents. They run from 1924, when they first met, to about 15 months before Weill's death, dated 25 November 1948.
One may wonder how a correspondence between husband and wife could be so voluminous. Of course, their professions had a lot to do with it, since Lenya was often away from Berlin doing stage performances. Later, when the couple moved to the United States, the same condition held, as both were involved in different projects in different places.
What is surprising is that for all the parts Weill wrote for Lenya in Germany, he wrote no similar parts for her in his English musical plays such as `Lost in the Stars', `One Touch of Venus', and `Johnny Johnson'. I suspect the libretto writers such as Maxwell Anderson and S. J. Perelman had a far greater say in character development.
The editors have done a terrific job of assembling, annotating, and indexing all this material. The contents give a truly superb look at a major piece of the cultural history of both German and American musical stages in the first half of the 20th century. One envies their relationship and, like H. L. Menchen, who lost the love of his life, one is just a bit jealous of the fact that one can only live this relation vicariously.
Remember Letters?.......2007-04-02
Can you imagine a book subtitled: "The Email and SMS Exchanges of ____and ____?"
Remember letters? Actual pieces of paper held in and written by the hand of the sender? Remember the thrill of seeing the return address in the upper left hand corner, the familiar writing of a loved one on the front?
Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya wrote each other almost every day they were apart. They are a veritable clearinghouse of the first half of 20th century history, having lived in Berlin of the 20's, Weill in French exile in the 30's then New York after that. It is a fascinating account--their impressions of Broadway and Hollywood are insightful (Weill) and hilarious(Lenya). Buy it. And write a letter to someone you love.
