Almost as good as a trip to the Italian Coast.......2006-11-03
The characters came alive and I was able to totally immerse myself in their tale. It was astouding to look up the specific places mentioned in the book, and find out they were real - and what glorious places in which to find oneself. A great escape!
Enjoyable fluff.......2006-10-06
The book makes nice easy reading typical of this sort of romance genre and that's about it. I bought it because I'm hooked on all things Italian and as such it's made a pleasant enough read. There was at least one factual error in it that wine buffs or people who know a lot about Italy would spot which made me lose a bit of faith in the author/novel/editor which was a shame. Having said that it's encouraged me to get off my backside and book my ticket back there!
boooooring.......2006-09-30
My first Adler book. Willing to give her another chance but will be a while before I do that.
Nice Descriptions; Boring Book.......2006-09-07
This was my first book by Elizabeth Adler. I have a great desire to visit Italy someday, and I thought I would enjoy this book. While her descriptions of Italy - both the scenery and the food - were very good, the story was just plain boring! It was like "Come on, will you just find out what happened to your father already!" Why didn't she try to find out more about her husband's antics? Plus no good love scenes at all to keep you occupied! There was a neat twist at the end, but all in all, a boring book. I'm debating whether to try another of her books.
Finding Love Again in Italy..........2006-07-10
Lamour Harrington, 38-year old successful landscape architect in Chicago, returns to her childhood home on the Amalfi Coast, disenchanted and looking to start over after discovering that her deceased husband had been planning to divorce her at the time of his death. She is also determined to solve the mystery of her father's accidental death in a boating accident when she was 17.
Lamour moves into the charming abandoned cottage that had held so many wonderful memories of the few brief years with her father, a carefree author, living on a shoestring but enjoying all that Italy had to offer and totally devoted to his daughter. She had always believed that his death had not been accidental, and in her searching she discovers many people who want to keep the past in the past.
She is pursued by both the rich and powerful Lorenzo, owner of the estate in which he cottage is located, and his flirtatious, sexy son Nico, but both want her to forget about the mystery of her father's death. Of course, her stubbornness won't allow her to do that, and she needs to solve the past before she can move on with her future.
The reader is invited along during this process of self-discovery as an armchair traveler and experiences the multiple charms of the mesmerizing Amalfi coast - the narrow winding "Mama Mia" road along the rocky cliffs, the startling colors of the Blue Grotto, the charms of the hedonistic Isle of Capri, the heaven-scented balmy evenings when Italians enjoy the Passegiata, the exquisite food and wine. Adler's sensuous descriptions of Italy make me want to book another trip right now! But if you can't afford a trip just now, read the book and return to Amalfi.

Book Description
Everything a player needs to know to play truly heroic characters in the Forgotten Realms setting.
Champions of Valor is a comprehensive guide to playing valiant heroes in the
Forgotten Realms setting. The counterpart to Champions of Ruin, Champions of Valor covers what it means to be valorous in the
Realms. The book describes several good-aligned guilds and organizations that characters can join, as well as the benefits for doing so. In addition, the book presents an array of new spells, feats, and prestige classes appropriate for heroes of valor, and opens up new opportunities for adventure, fame, and glory for truly heroic characters.

A Waste of Money and Printing Ink.......2006-03-21
I wanted to like this book, really. I thought it was supposed to be a Book of Exalted Deeds for the Forgotten Realms, sort of like how Champions of Ruin was a Book of Vile Darkness for the Realms. And surely, surely it'd have something usable for all classes, right?
I was so completely and utterly wrong. I'm so glad this was purchased with a gift certificate.
First, the introduction points out that it's for "valorous" heroes...not necessarily good, as they define "valorous" to mean "fights evil things", which can be stretched to include evil priests fighting other evil priests. Granted, there isn't much of that, but there's more about Neutral characters and organizations than I think appropriate.
Second, while there is a great deal of useful information for paladins, I challenge you to find anything for a good rogue. At all. No feats, no substitution levels, nothing. It's terribly disappointing.
Now, there are a few good things. There is a plethora of substitution levels, which are used to differentiate members of a class in an organization from those who aren't. This is a nice use of them, and it's a real shame that half of these are paladins of one form or another. The fluff's nice, and I hear a lot of people like the information on the various horse breeds in the back.
On the other hand, this continues the use of the fat, bloated, 4-page prestige class format, as well as the fat, bloated, corpulent magic item description format. Because there's nothing more useful than two pages of history for a +3 outsider bane greatsword, and I just so need fully half of the prestige classes in the book devoted to characters with flying mounts.
Bottom line, this has very limited utility and portability. It's great if you're playing a paladin in the Forgotten Realms who wants a flying mount, but if not, try and convince your friend to buy it. Don't waste your money.
Who told you that being good is not revarding?.......2005-12-06
Champions of Valor is the counterpart of Champions of Ruin, a Forgotten Realms supplement published by Wizards during the summer. Champions of Ruin is not needed to use this book, however.
This book presents the reader with several options for valiant characters in the Forgotten Realms. New spells, feats, substitution levels, organisations are all included to give your character an edge.
However, this book is something more than just "new rules for good characters". This book is only worth something if "you take it seriuosly", in other words, DMs should take care and require a considerable effort of role-playing from characters who use this book. Being valiant is not equal to getting a +2 sacred bonus on your AC, it means that you take part in an organisation, you help the poor, accept missions where you risk your life for free, etc.
This book has much to offer for players, but also for DMs who wish to create a good aligned NPC. I would say it is mostly for experienced DMs and players, beginners should be cautious about incorporating the contents of this book into the game before getting at least some experience with role-playing.
As usual for Forgotten Realms products, it is beautifully illustrated and edited. The cover picture is quite unique, I did not like the picture first, but now I think that it was a good choice to reflect the contents of the book.

Customer Reviews:
Easy and Interesting.......2006-07-23
This book was relatively simple to read front to back. I enjoyed the stories very much, as they only took up no more then thirty pages an author. This book expresses a broad scope of literary imagination, involving everything from curious halflings to zealous religious enemies and everything in between. The stories are (overall) well written and simple in language. None of the stories seem to mirror another, so each story will feel like a new and different adventure. The reason this book gets four out of five stars is because I diddnt feel it needed to be as easy as it turned out to be. If the content were to be slightly more geared to adults, I would have readily jumped on the ideas for my own campaign adventures.
Perhaps what drew me to read this would be the last story by R.A.Salvatore and his infamous Drow character, Drizzt. I would have thought I would treat the stories leading up to that one like previews for trite movies at the cineplex that you can't fast forward or skip through. I would prove myself wrong on that, as there was plenty of humor, tricks, and clever situations that caught and held my attention. If you play the Forgotten Realms campaign, or just read the stories, you would have fun with this book both ways.
Revisiting the heroes........2002-03-20
James Lowder, ed., Realms of Valor (TSR, 1993)
Realms of Valor was the first short story collection to showcase the continuing adventures of various well-known personages in the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons world of the Forgotten Realms (a second, Realms of Infamy, appeared later). Each of the stories is written by someone who was instrumental in the creation of the original characters, e.g. Scott Ciencin, who wrote parts of the Avatar Trilogy under the name Richard Awlinson, gives us a tale about Adon, the priest from the adventuring party in those books, and Robert Salvatore brings back Drizzt Do'Urden, who's spent time on the New York Times bestseller list on quite a few occasions over the past decade.
The book's probably not a starting point for reading about the Realms, but for those who have a few series' worth under their belts, it's great to see one's old friends again. The stories, in general, live up to the novels that introduced the various characters within. They do so well enough, in fact, that some characters with which the reader might not yet be familiar may inspire the more industrious reader to go looking for the books that the characters came from. Very good stuff. *** ½
Hmm............2001-09-15
ok, i only read 3 of the stories so far, so dont count my rating. the one with drizzt was unbelievably boring though, as was the one with arilyn. the really cool one was "the last drink" by christie golden which had the vampire elf jander summerstar, who is really cool. i liked that story.....:)
Short stories to make you think........2000-11-26
"Oldies, but Goodies," still hold true today. I re-dug this book out of the boxes of Forgotten Realms books and read it again for the first time. Valor isn't just a word, it's an idea. Take a spin and read this book, as you put yourself in each main character's shoes, and see if you think you might have Valor. I highly recommend this book to those who think deeply and have an open mind to different opinions in Valor.

A Canticle for Leibowitz
ASIN: 0671833049 |
Book Description
Walter M. Miller Jr is best remembered as the author of A Canticle for Leibowitz, universally recognized as one of the greatest novels of modern SF. But as well as writing that deeply felt and eloquent book, he produced many shorter works of fiction of stunning originality and power. His profound interest in religion and his innate literary gifts combined perfectly in the production of such works as 'The Darfstellar', for which he won a Hugo in 1955, 'Conditionally Human', 'I, Dreamer' and 'The Big Hunger', all of which are included in this brilliant and essential collection.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable Classic SF.......2001-08-25
I haven't read A Canticle for Liebowitz or Saint Liebowitz and the Wild Horse Woman. Thus this yellow-jacketed reissue was my first brush with the fiction of Walter M Miller. Here we have 14 stories spread over 472 pages, all written between 1952 and 1957. Possibly because of this some of them seem to exhibit more than a passing resemblance to some of Philip K Dick's early short stories. In fact whether or not you like those early Dick tales will probably determine whether or not you like these. Here we have far-future communities who have returned to a Middle Ages existence coming to terms with a giant computer and its robot guardian, post-apocalyptic stories, evil aliens dealing in human cargo, plays where the entire cast is composed of robots, and the story of a world-wide plague which becomes a thinly-disguised meditation on the implications and consequences of intolerance. None of these tales offers anything new or startlingly original, but then they are over 40 years old. They're also well written delightful examples of fifties' SF. And I'll be reading the Liebowitz books when I get a chance.
Miller Delivers Thoughtful Sci-fi from the 1950's.......2001-05-22
As the title suggests, this book collects the best short stories and novellas of Walter Miller, Jr., the '50's science fiction writer best known for the brilliant novel "A Canticle for Leibowitz". Miller isn't overly strong on science, so none of these pieces come off as especially dated by recent discoveries, although it's interesting that so many of the technological innovations Miller foresaw have since been realized, albeit in somewhat different forms. The characterization is about what you'd expect from science fiction stories, and of the novellas, only the hero of "Darfstellar" shows real development. Nor is plotting Miller's great strength - too many of the conclusions seem obvious well before the halfway point. As a group, these stories get their punch from powerful ideas - problems that humankind has never solved, but which are likely to get worse in the future. Although Miller doesn't offer any easy solutions, his stories are intelligent and thought provoking, opening up the kind of dialogue that's necessary if these matters are ever to be settled at all. Also noteworthy are his powerful heroines. The overwhelming force of a mother's love drives the folksy "You Triflin' Skunk" and the darker "Vengeance for Nikolai", while "Anybody Else Like Me?" shows a woman driven to fight for her right to privacy. Another common theme is the question of how we define what it means to be human. Miller attacks this problem biologically in the unusual plague drama of "Dark Benediction" and the more-relevant-than-ever "Conditionally Human", and again in a more technological vein with "I, Dreamer". But while these stories are good enough in their way, Miller is most effective when describing the plight of the common workingman. Whether in conflict with technology that replaces him, or with environments that seem determined to destroy him (or at least impinge upon his freedom of action, as in "Dumb Waiter"), Miller's workingman manages to maintain his essential dignity, continues to care about his fellow man, and holds fast to the basic values that separate him from the machine. The best of these stories is "Crucifixus Etiam", in which earthmen working on the planet Mars must choose between a less miserable present and the chance to return home in the future. Miller makes us feel the hero's pain, his terror, and his longing for home, in a way that makes us wonder whether we would be able to make the harsh choices that he makes. Miller's tales often remind us that the true price of human expansion is the hard labor performed by those who are least likely to be compensated for it, and thus proves that true heroism often consists of just doing an unpleasant task that needs to be done - a lesson we should all try to learn. Miller may not be one of the grandmasters of the genre, but this book should please any fan of mid-twentieth-century science fiction.

Elizabeth Cary lived from 1585-1635 meaning she lived in the 16th and 17th centuries NOT the 18th century. Kind of an important distinction don't you think?
