Book Description

Alfred Alcorn has another winner. The Long Run of Myles Mayberry, his fourth novel, is a delicious send-up of shallow liberalism with surprisingly profound moments of insight. His well-intentioned, agreeable loser of a hero, Myles O'Malley Mayberry, is a thirty-year-old graduate school drop-out with no particular long-term plans.

Alcorn masterfully titrates suspense with a deeper exploration of Myle's psyche, raising intriguing questions about the nature of our ambitions and goals. After some surprising plot twists, by the end of the book, we feel both exultant and gratified, as if we'd just completed a particularly challenging and satisfying run."- Helen Fremont, Harvard Review, Fall 1999

"'Marathon Man' pens novel Author Alcorn's book is runaway fun.

"We have to think about time and how we spend it," Alfred Alcorn says, the author of The Long Run of Myles Mayberry, a funny and touching novel published by Cambridge's Zoland Books. Alcorn writes: "When Myles hit his stride, there seemed no limits. He could run to China and back. He could run beyond himself." "We are all obsessional to a point," Alcorn says. "From politics to writing even to fixing up a country house, the nature of an obsession isn't that is necessarily has to have a goal. Once someone starts obsessing-running, alcohol, birds, football, almost any human activity-it generates is own momentum, its own rituals."-Wendy Button, Cambridge Tab (excerpt), 11 May 1999

"Alcorn's new novel is an odd hybrid: a send-up of the loony fads, bad fashion and sexual shenanigans of the 1970s crossed with a sober meditation on another of the decade's crazes, running and on the dangers of obsession. Myles Mayberry is a thirty-year-old, Harvard-educated under-achiever who, in almost all walks of life, is running in place. His business, his marriage, even his sanity are failing. Alienated from the '70s excesses that surround him -- the wicker and rattan, the macrobiotic foods, the new-age therapies, the religious leaders in loincloths -- he runs, not away but around and around, in preparation for the Boston Marathon. Through Myles and his "long last shot at winning," Alcorn illuminates the inner life of the runner, exploring running

5 out of 5 stars A great story of approaching middle age..........2000-01-06

...with nothing to show for it, except a dream of winning the Boston Marathon. Anyone who has struggled with accepting the responsibility of adulthood -- marriage, children, a "real" job -- will appreciate Myle's desire to escape by running everywhere around Cambridge and Boston, with an obsession that borders on madness. I really enjoyed the way this book blended hilarious situations like Myles "sleep-running" through the subways at night with the dangerous and dark ways his obsession jeopardizes his marriage, friendships, even his own physical and mental health. I highly recommend the book!

Not very well written, anti-climatic, drags

The idea was great but not well executed

5 out of 5 stars Classic de Lint Fantasy.......2007-05-04

One of the things that I've come to love about Charles de Lint is his ability to capture the essence and spirit of the fantastic and to portray that perfectly to the reader in a way that brings out a glow like a child discovering magic for the first time. With Moonheart, de Lint once again has captured my heart and brought me on a journey that I loved every second of.

Moonheart is a very complex story. There are many interweaving story lines which works very well with the theme of Native American souls, spirits, and connectedness. It begins as the story of Sara Kendell. Sara co-owns a wonderful little antiques and book shop in Ottawa called The Merry Dancers. One day, while unpacking one of the boxes from an old estate, Sara discovers a painting of two Native American men, and a medicine bag which contains a gold ring, a bone disc with a quarter moon on one side and a stag on the other, and a feather. The contents of this box are what goes on to form a truly amazing and epic story.

Sara lives with her uncle, Jamie Tams. Jamie is more of a friend to Sara and is the co-owner of the shop. Jamie is also the owner of Tamson house where they live. Tamson house is a wonderful thing. The house is a character in itself. It's a giant house encompassing an entire city block and has had numerous occupants coming and going throughout the years. It's an old house with all of the wonderful features of an old house. There is a courtyard in the middle of the house that is more like a park with beautiful gardens. Here's where the twist comes in. The house exists not only in Ottawa, but in the Otherworld as well.

While at a diner one day, Sara is approached by a stranger, a musician, named Kieran Foy. What eventually ensues brings her to this Otherworld. The otherworld is a beautiful, rich forest untouched by mankind. It is inhabited by Native Americans who practice ancient magics and follow ancient ways. The contents of the medicine bag tie Sara to this world now, and we soon learn that fate had it arranged that way. When all of the inhabitants of Tamson House are spirited away to the Otherworld, the battle against an ancient evil, an ancient feud begins. The ancient evil is a being named Ma'lek'a and it's allies are the Tragg'a and both are truly horrifying creatures.

This only begins to touch on the story. I could go on for pages and pages describing this wonderful book to you, but I recommend that you read it yourself. There are many wonderful characters in this book, and I came to love so many of them. Blue, Taliesin, Hengwr, Tucker, just to name a few.

I love the cover art for the book. It was done by David Bergen and sums up the feel of the book perfectly! Bergen also did the cover art for Greenmantle, I believe, another great book of de Lint's. There's also a highly desired version of this book with art by Charles Vess which was published by Subterranean Press. I'd love to get my hands on a copy of that.

It took me a long time to read this book. It's definitely not a sit down and read it quick book. It was much like reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell to me. Very rewarding, but I couldn't plow through it. I loved it though, and it has definitely secured me as a de Lint fan. All of the de Lint themes are here...magic, Native American folklore, music, the power of bonds and ties in humanity.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best fantasy stories ever.......2005-11-12

This was my introduction to Charles de Lint and I enjoyed the story so much, I read every other book of his I could find! Another great one: Greenmantle. Great writer. You won't go wrong with this book.

2 out of 5 stars Fast start to boring predictability.......2005-11-03

I was very excited to read this book. And I was immediately enticed right into the story. I loved the color of the story, the characters, as well as the compelling flow of the beginning of this story. It starts off being a magical page-turner that seemingly is moving into an even more exciting story. But from that great start the story, in my opinion, goes no where.
Other reviewers of this book have just cause to write that there are perhaps too many characters. That might in deed be true. The problem with the book for me is that it becomes incredibly predictable "been there done that". I would have preferred the fantasy elements of this book to have stuck with the Native American aspects, as well as other unique entwinements, instead of delving into the same old Fantasy elements with Merlin "Myrrdin", "Taliesin", and the same old stories intertwined. I thought by using well known Celtic and Druidic mages of old reduced the book, and story. I was dissapointed when Taliesin officially entered the multitude of Central Characters.
The book plays out more of a day dream or "lucid dream" of someone would want to have happened in thier life, rather then a truly good story. The story gets to a point where it absolutely ceases to surprise. I found myself skipping through pages to get to the end. I knew that I wasn't missing anything. And that is such a contrast to how the book starts off.

The book plays out like a below average Horror-Mystery story (with a very weak Horror aspect).
There are very clever, and magically woven points laced into the book, especially the beginning, but the story runs into so many problems, and ultimately just loses its momentum. It's too bad because it had great potential. But one can see from this book, the First by De Lint that he had great potential. Potential that many would argue was surely fulfilled with his later books, which still continue to come out today.
If you are looking for the best of De Lint, or simply a good Fantasy read I would definitely not start here. I give it 2 Stars only because of its great beginning. But the rest of the book is just flat out dissapointing.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2005-09-17

This book is one of Charles de Lint's earliest novels, and it's a wonderful read. His characters are very richly defined, and he does a wonderful job of evoking a sense of magic and mystery. I think de Lint's later writing tends toward being a little too formulaic, but this isn't the case here. Tamson House and its residents are people I was sorry to miss when the books were finished.

This exciting book is really two novellas published as one, fat paperback book! The first story is Four Day Planet, which is set in Piper's Terro-Human Future History. Fenris is an unusual world; one that's year is about the same as Earth's, but it only has four days per year! With blazing hot days and nights that are colder than cold, it is a world of tough individuals who don't like being cheated. Well, they are being cheated, and as Walter Boyd, star reported for the Port Sandor Times, watches, the whole world prepares to go up in flames.

The second story stands alone, which is to say that is it is not in Piper's Terro-Human Future History or Paratime milieus. New Texas was founded when the whole ornery state of Texas built themselves spaceships and headed out to the new frontier - space. But now, these rugged and independent New Texans are the target of an expansive race of extraterrestrials, and it's up to the Solar League's ambassador to guide them back into Earth's embrace. Well, mister, it's going to take one tough and wily ambassador to steer the New Texans - but is Stephen Silk that tough and that wily?

These two stories are absolutely great! H. Beam Piper (1904-64) is one of the little recognized greats of science fiction. He was an expert at creating fascinating worlds that were both fantastic and yet utterly believable, and these stories show his writing ability off to great effect. If you like good sci-fi, then you will like this book. If you are a fan of H. Beam Piper, then it is a must-have!

"Lone Star Planet" postulates that in a rational society, to the extent that you can call Texas "rational," private individuals can legally murder politicians who exert power in ways they don't like. How does this differ from kook hate literature like "The Turner Diaries"? Would we feel somewhat differently about Piper now if Lee Harvey Oswald had a copy of "Lone Star Planet" in his possession during his arrest for shooting President Kennedy -- in Texas?

This review is focused more toward the Lone Star Planet half of this double book. As a fan of H. Beam Piper, I bought the book because I liked him (and I am a Texan). The premise was funny and I couldn't resist the image of the entire state of Texas emmigrating to another planet (taking the Alamo with them, of course). The plot was not only funny, it was well put together and insightful regarding the "Texan" mentality, which I might add, is as much a product of how other regions perceive us as it is how we present ourselves to the world. I often cite this book as something fun to read whether you like Science Fiction or not, because it is first and foremost a parody of people and politics and the difference between politicians and diplomats.

Just this week I purchased another copy of it from a used book dealer. I can't wait to read it again!

Have you ever considered the role of government in our lives? In Four Day Planet-Lone Star Planet H. Beam Piper does just that. In Four Day Planet, we visit the planet Fenris, a near Hell-world that turns only four times in a year, but that is not the important part. You see, the people who live there are the decendants of colonists who stayed when the company who set up the colony collapsed. Left to their own devices the struggle aginst the lawless brigands who have set themsleves as rulers.

Lone-Star Planet, ( A planet for Texas ) takes us to the world of New Texas. A lovely little planet, with a government much like our own, with one little exception, Killing a member of the government is only illegial if a jury thinks it was more than he deserved. Think about it!!! This little oddity suited New Taxans just fine until somebody killed the Solar League Ambassador now a lot of people think New Texas needs a new government. Not well know anymore H. Beam Piper was one of the finest authors of his day, and this was one of his finest works.

Four-Day Planet is the only Piper book set on Fenris, which rotates so slowly that it only has 4 days in a year, and a sunset is 100 hours long. Fenris survives by trading tallow-wax, produced from sea monsters. The monster hunters have been ripped off for years by trading agreements, and they're not going to take it anymore...

Lone Star Planet is set on New Texas -- the whole state migrated (they took the Alamo with them, of course). Politicians on New Texas are *really* accountable to the people, as the new Federation ambassador finds out...

Forget Spanish fly or powdered rhino horn; if you want to get your lover in the mood, look no farther than your local supermarket. Strawberries, chocolate, asparagus--even coffee--have long been considered stimulants for the romantic appetite. For centuries, folk wisdom held that foods either rare or resembling a sexual organ had tremendous power over the libido. Modern science has since debunked that theory, but there's no denying that a meal lovingly prepared and properly presented with just the right ambience can precipitate the most passionate encounters. In Intercourses: An Aphrodisiac Cookbook, Martha Hopkins and Randall Lockridge appeal to all the senses as they offer up 85 heart-melting, temperature-raising dishes, along with an array of sensuous photographs that will make you look at food in a whole new light.

The book is divided into 17 sections, each one devoted to a particular food with aphrodisiac qualities, from chocolate and chilies to black beans and oysters. Following these are recipes for massage oils, seasonal dishes, and meals to appeal to every astrological sign and every stage of a relationship, from first date to golden anniversary. There's even a list of resources on subjects ranging from further reading on aphrodisiacs to locating aromatherapy candles. Just reading Intercourses is a sensual experience--imagine what eating from it will be!

                            Book Description

Organized by type of aphrodisiac, this playful cookbook covers 19 sensual foods, ranging from traditional favorites like oysters and strawberries to lesser-known but just as potent foods such as pine nuts and asparagus. Including histories of aphrodisiacs, couples' anecdotes, and tantalizing photography, this 10th-anniversary edition of this beautiful and innovative cookbook features more than 55 new, couple-tested recipes and a completely revised appendix.

This is such a visually stunning book. I've only made a couple of the dishes in here and they've been good. But it's more about the write ups on the different foods and the pictures. It makes a great gift for someone special.

I've bought a lot of aphrodisiac cookbooks, and none of them have been as fascinating, educational, and practical as this one. I use this cookbook often. The "testimonials" from real people were wild! I commend the authors and designer on a job well done.

Also included are looks at and recipes for the weird and wonderful new offspring of the martini renaissance: chocolate and espresso martinis, the Cajun Combustion Engine, Martini Navratilova, Very Berry Martini, Pasini Express, Berlin Station Chief and many more. With sidebars featuring quotes from literature, toasts and historical points of interest, plus photos recalling great martini moments in film, politics, culture and advertising, Shaken Not Stirred is a fabulous celebration of a classic and very au courant international tradition.

This is a great little book. It has great martini recipes as well as martini-stories from the authors and others... martini lore, history. Totally fun if your into the martini thing.

The recipes were fun and interesting..some a bit too esoteric for me...but I liked reading them anyway. And like that they are interspersed with the text instead of in a separate recipe section. There are some fun martini quotes too..

The only drawback, I think, and its minor..is that I just hate the feel of the paper. The cover is fine but the pages feel cheap and grainy to me. Harsh, even... It may be a pleasure to read but it isnt really one to hold. Seems to me a smoother paper would be better, altho probably alot more expensive.

That said...its a fun fun book. Easy to read, in a fiction way, as opposed to a non-fiction way. It has flow sometimes lacking in non-fiction.

                            ...shake your 'tini?

I was pleased to receive this book recently as a gift and couldn't wait to peel back the front cover and begin seeing what it had in stock for me. The book was a perfect companion as I'd just gotten a set of 4 martini glasses and a shaker/strainer and was eager to put them to good use. But since my nose was too buried in this concise little text, I didn't have any need for the hardware yet. Since "Shaken Not Stirred" also offered conventional and more modern drink recipies - in an effective layout - I was perfectly willing to go back to it to look up a couple of drink recipes once I'd read up on my background info on the drink. I feel like I am now a true martini aficianado and much better informed!

The book was put together by the authors of a website by the same name, who launched their site on Halloween of '95. Soon, they had gotten many suggestions to put the book together - and it turned out to be an unqualified hit. There are many reasons to like this book, it's easy to read and the words flow, plus its something I'd want to read more than once. But perhaps my favorite part about this original idea for a book (it purports to be the first bar book expressly dedicated to the martini, and backs it up by research done by the publisher) is that it's not just a recipe book or just a list of bars. In other words, all you probably ever need to know in a tight little package. It was also neat finding out I'd already visited some of their best "martini lounges" in my city within the pages, but was eager to try the places I hadn't heard of. I'd recommend this volume to anyone interested in mixing their own drinks, or even wanting to learn a little bit more behind the whole martini or "Swingers" culture.

Now then, care for a cocktail? ;)

I don't consider myself to be a big drinker, but the Martini is so cool and this book represents it in every aspect. It's just a really cool book to leave around the apartment so people can spy it when they drop by. I'm going to find one of those Martini lounges!

                            Book Description

William L. Hamilton loves a good gimlet. Rose's and lime. Straight up. Perfectly iced. Make the glass pretty too. "It ruined my reputation for thinking before I speak," he writes of that love. "I accept the trade-off." Like Lewis Carroll's Alice, when Hamilton sees it, he drinks it -- and tells the incredible tale.

In "Shaken and Stirred," his biweekly Sunday Styles column, now an original book of his drinking adventures, the intrepid New York Times reporter offers a gimlet-eyed look at contemporary culture through the panoptic view of a cocktail glass. From the venerable martini to the young Dirty Jane, Hamilton shares his tip on the sip.

You hold in your hands a guide to "how it goes down." Not a cocktail manual or a Baedeker to the bar scene but a drinker's guide to drinking. These are four-ounce adventures of cocktails and the people who make them, from the bartenders and chefs to the patrons, the politicians and the power players of the liquor industry.

There are tales of the Champagne high life, the Long Island Iced Tea low life; men like Dr. Brown and his celery soda, and women like Eve and her Apple Martini. Hamilton's weekly Runyanesque rounds cover all the watering holes and their poisons, from the East Side's Southside to the Incredible Hulk in the Bronx, and monitors the latest trends, from the ultra-premium vodka wars to the Red Bull market. Shaken and Stirred is a report on a popular culture that comes alive after five, when the mood turns social and the moment is sweet (or sour, or bitter, or dry).

Hamilton has also picked up the best (or the most unbelievable) cocktail recipes from bars, lounges and restaurants in New York City and beyond. There is common sense and creativity in the classics, and new inventions with their eye on the prize, such as the Huckleberry Ginn and the Bleeding Heart. "drink me," said the bottle in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Hamilton has, in every instance, and bottled his thoughts in sixty-four essays that are as readable as they are drinkable. Mix a gimlet, or a Minnesota Anti-Freeze, or a Gibson or a Bone. And spend a night in, on the town.

A post-election bonanza. Bring on the swizzle sticks and the shaker. We're gonna' need this.
I've been clipping Mr. Hamilton's pieces for a couple of years and this is a welcomed compilation of his best offerings. He has a yen for the art of the bar and a true sense of elagance.
                            This is a winner.
I plan to work my way through the volume with dispatch.
                            Now all I need are some accompanying lines;
"Come here often", "You look familiar", "My, what an elegant cocktail", etc.
Sidle up to the bar and enjoy. And make it a double.

What could be more perfect? A book you can drink and read at the same time! What Susan Orlean found in Orchids, NY TIMES columnist Hamilton has found in the perfect Gimlet: the meaning of life. Even better than Hamilton's dry and dirty war/bar stories from his New York City beat is the childish glee you'll get while mixing mysterious potions made from all those odd liquor bottles you've never bought before. Way more fun than popping a cork! The enlightenment that comes from reading Hamilton's saucy prose and sipping your new cocktail is not sanctioned by the Religious Right, AA, or Mr. Rogers, but who's to say in this topsy turvy world that a well-made, well-shared cocktail may not be one of the few answers we have?

This book, and I am NOT making this up, is a collection of full page soft core nude photos of women with a drink recipe to go along with the libation that appears somewhere in the picture. The text is full of innuendo and the pictures are either very standard or very strange. This is simply a suggestive and very odd excuse for looking at naked 80's women with big hair.

                                    Book Description

Proud lions, patriotic eagles, and solemn bulls--not to mention prancing horses, majestic oak trees, and festive table settings--graced the roadsides of colonial America. Painted onto wooden signboards and hung above the heads of passers-by, these colorful images communicated critical information, enabling local residents and travelers to find their way to commercial enterprises and civic gatherings. These signs, as they evolved from the eighteenth through the mid-nineteenth century, documented the radical shift from a premodern agricultural society to the entrepreneurial, market-driven, and increasingly urban economy of the early Republic.

Handsomely illustrated with over seventy color plates, this catalogue--published in collaboration with a major traveling exhibition--features works from the Connecticut Historical Society, which houses the nation's preeminent collection of early American painted signs. Eight essays, written by prominent scholars of American art and cultural history, explore the medium and discuss why these signs are much more than picturesque relics of bygone times. Indeed, this volume reconnects sign paintings to the broad continuum of artistic genres and practices within which they were produced, displayed, and viewed.

An accessible text, illustrated generously throughout, includes an introduction that encourages the reader to engage with sign paintings from a variety of artistic and cultural perspectives including those of vernacular art, commercial art, and visual and material culture. Other essays examine specific aspects of sign paintings: the creative processes of the individual makers, the distinctive techniques and materials used, the development of the profession, the iconography and sources, and the consequences of outdoor installation on aesthetic and cultural meanings. The volume also features a detailed catalogue of the sign paintings in the exhibition and brief biographies of those sign painters that have been documented in Connecticut.

Both building on and recasting the rich legacy of "folk art," Lions and Eagles and Bulls provides a wealth of new information about these highly significant and well-loved objects to scholars, collectors, and art-lovers alike.

Contributors to the catalogue include Philip D. Zimmerman, Margaret C. Vincent, Sandra Webber, Alexander Carlisle, Nancy Finlay, Catherine Gudis, Kenneth L. Ames, and Bryan J. Wolf.

An excellent reference book for the student or collector of Early American Art, especially the Colonial Period. The photos are sharp and clear. The text informative and helpful to the collector, student and or interested individuals. This form of Art is highly collectable and has been extensively reproduced by today's artists specializing in reproductions of classic folk art. I highly recommend this book for art lovers, collectors and students of American Folk Art.

This book has lots of great information on growing, preparing and using English willow to make baskets. The title suggests a more general topic. There are several example baskets with good instructions and diagrams, but if you're looking for instructions on flat- or round-reed baskets, look at Lyn Siler's books instead.

                                                      Book Description

Exhaustive research in every major archive of the world has created this compilation of information and images focusing on Bernhardt's films and twenty early wax-cylinder and disc recordings. Detailed analyses of the motion pictures include plot synopses, casts, production notes, and contemporary reviews. Complete records of Bernhardt's work on stage, in films, and recordings are annotated and indexed.

The book includes such rare items as dramatic readings by Bernhardt on early wax cylinders and 78rpm (transcribed in the original French and translated into English for the first time), as well as stills from a previously unknown film (depicting the death scene from the 1921 Daniel).

While the subject of this book--the audio recording and film productions of Sarah Bernhardt--is one that has been much needed, Mr. Menefee is not necessarily the best person to have written it. While his enthusiasm for the topic is high, his knowledge of theater, film, and sound recording is deplorably low, making this book sometimes an embarrassingly poor reference work.

The chapter on the genesis of making records in Edison's studio, for example, seems to be a hotchpotch of information, perhaps gleaned by asking someone about it and then writing up what he think he heard. Menefee reports the extraordinary idea that cylinders revolving at 90 rpm hold less information than those revolving at 160, which is patently absurd (the rpms would make the fidelity better, but with the same groove density there would be more information at 90). In effect, the faster cyinders did hold more information, but not for the reason he cites; to make it worse, Menefee does talk about groove density later on, confusingly contradicting what he's just written above.

He uses the phrase 'her unique vibrato' over and over to describe Bernhardt's voice, as though she were the only actor to use such a thing. Of course, in the days before amplification in large theaters, that was *the* way actors were able to enunciate: to spit out consonants and hold the vowels as though they were musical tones with a vibrato. If you listen to *any* recording of an actor of that age, you will hear it (Coquelin, Otis Skinner, Forbes-Robertson, even Barrymore).

There are lots of little slips like that which make the book depressingly frustrating. It would gain 75% just to be better copy-edited by someone who knew both French and English, so as not to be startled by something as odd as "Cyrano de Bèrgèrac."

Finally, it is too bad that such a book couldn't be merely the liner-notes to a DVD that contained the audio selections (there aren't many that survive), and the extant film: but that is far too much to ask anyone at this point in time.

                                                        Book Description

Sarah Bernhardt (1844–1923) was an extraordinary performer, so much so that her name became synonymous with acting. Yet her importance extended beyond the world of theater—she was an icon of French nationalism, a target of both admiration and scorn, an artist and sculptor, and a trendsetting avatar of style. This fascinating book examines the many sides and talents of Bernhardt, from her beginnings at the Comédie Française through her international stardom. Wonderfully illustrated, the book features an unprecedented collection of images relating to Bernhardt’s life, including paintings, posters, photographs, costumes, jewelry, stage designs, self-portraits, and sculptures.

Bernhardt orchestrated a brilliant sixty-year career as an actress and entrepreneur, becoming a revered patriotic figure in her native France and a beloved star in America, where she undertook nine successful tours. Along the way she sat for the most fashionable artists of her time, became the most photographed woman in the world, and attached her name to everything from hair curlers to liqueurs. This book brings the incredible Sarah Bernhardt to life for contemporary readers and highlights her historical significance and integral place in modern culture.

When one ones to know the degry of celebrity an artist has earned over the years following her death, just check out the numerous biographies published about the person.SARAH BERNHARDT is the most famous actress of her time;she played many roles of the repertoire ,and she also created many like ROSTAND's L'AIGLON and DUMAS's LA DAME AUX CAMÉLIAS.Like many actresses, she had an eccentric life and she actually made her name with her talent, not her beauty. This book allows you to encounter many important figures like VICTOR HUGO,ALEXANDRE DUMAS,EDMOND ROSTAND and OSCAR WILDE who were part of her life. The book is filled with pictures of the different decades of her life.If you want to read one book about her, this one can satisfy you.Beware of SARAH's memoirs, because it is a well known fact that she enjoyed the art of lying. After reading this,i had this thought.Would SARAH have managed to make the career she had in today's world? My answer is yes, even if in the process, she probably would have cut a few throats of repulsive columnists.

                                                              5 out of 5 stars A nearly perfect book...........2006-05-31

about a figure as compelling as almost any in the last 160 years.

After reading it, I was in love with Sarah Bernhardt and author Cornelia Otis Skinner.

Anybody who didn't like this book wouldn't like Princess Bride, Pepe Le Moko or Messages From My Father. (And I wouldn't like them.)

This book is funny, touching, adventurous, complete and satisfying. I think it should be required reading for everyone, not only for its insights about character, life and countries -- but also as a promotional tool to educate the tv masses as to how little in their diet can compare to one great book.

I've bought a half dozen of them and sent them to the young'ens.

And they all caught the magic.

5 out of 5 stars Sarah B by Someone Who Really Knows the French Theatre.......2002-03-19

Sarah Bernhardt was the Madonna and the Meryl Streep of her day. She was a brilliant actress who broke from the traditions of the Comedie Francaise to create her own theatrical milieu. She inspired the intellectuals and the fans alike in fin-de-siecle Paris and she acted her way around the world. Her scandalous life style inspired plenty of press and numerous imitations.

Author Cornelia Otis Skinner provides a direct link to this era: her father, a noted stage actor, remembers seeing The Divine Sarah on the stage, and Cornelia herself became an actress. Cornelia was also a devotee of the French theatre--her most famous book, "Our Hearts Were Young and Gay", recounts her early studies with the stars of the Comedie Francaise in the 1920s.

Reading the witty "Madame Sarah" you have the feeling that you are hearing from someone who was there, someone who actually saw the Left Bank students unhitch the horses of Sarah's carriage and pull it through the streets themselves. The book is well-informed and admiring of its complex subject, but it is not fawning, as it frankly documents the less-appealing sides of a talented woman.

I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the history of the theatre, the French theatre, the Paris of the era, or the very intriguing actress herself...
