Soul City, a place where racial divisions are juxtaposed and black love flows freely, is the main setting for The Portable Promised Land, a debut collection of short stories by Touré. Buoyant and edged with magical realism, stories such as "The Steviewondermobile"; "A Hot Time at the Church of Kentucky Fried Souls and the Spectacular Final Sermon of the Right Revren Daddy Love"; and "The Sad, Sweet Story of Sugar Lips Shinehot, the Man with the Portable Promised Land" are moving testaments to the urban black experience, comingling or interchanging music, religion, and human failings with dramatic and comic effect. We are told: "No matter how rotund she was Daddy Love could still hug her in surround-sound stereo because Daddy Love was super-sized as though God had intended him to be literally larger than life." And, when Sugar Lips Shinehot dare ask the price of boundless freedom (by eliminating all white men) offered to him by Reverend Scratch (a.k.a. the Devil) and is chided for doing so, Sugar Lips simply replies, "If you from Harlem you do." These main stories are fresh and earnest, and well worth reading.
The rest of the collection, however, is a mixed bag. A triptych of the Black Widow, a female hip-hop militant-gangsta out to turn the world of the white folks (or MCs--Melatonin Challenged) upside down, is sensationalist but falls flat, and several of the pieces rely on catalogs of pop culture references, words and phrases in the black lexicon, or amateurish listing. While the delivery may be messy, the ideas are clear and important--from what America would be like in a black-dominated society to interracial relationships to the importance and beauty of black language. As Touré notes: "When you a Negro white folk is like doors. You got to go though them to get most anywhere." --Michael Ferch

Touré's Tour de Force.......2005-10-17
I bought this book for the story "Solomon's Big Day" which I heard read on NPR and was totally taken with and stayed in my car to hear the end of. The story is a great description of a young boy's creative spirit and his close call with fame. Though clearly fiction, it's not that far off from what I imagine to be reality.
Then, there's the rest of the book and all the other captivating stories! Touré's ability to create a mood and draw me in is like going on a series of mini-vacations to other worlds. I'm so pleased to know of his existence and will track his future work.
I think the sequel will be better..........2004-05-30
Now I'm not really a fan of magic realism. In fact, every other book I've tried to read in the genre I've never finished. This collection was actually not so bad. The stories take place in Soul City, a urban black utopia of sorts. Some of the stories left me a bit bored, but others were good. I got the chance to meet Toure and he read some of the stories that will be in his next book which centers around more residents of Soul City. I'll be sure to pick it up because it seems like he is only maturing as a writer.
open your eyes to a new world.......2003-07-26
For some people this book would be outside their comfort zones, at times shocking but great depth with the characters in each story.it was a new author for me and i believe he will be very successful with whatever he writes.
EXCELLENT!!!.......2003-05-27
At a time when literature addicts were becoming disillusioned with the cookie-cutter offerings of late, here comes Toure with this outstanding collection of stories. I was blown away! Toure can be bitingly obvious in his criticism of African-American culture, and then flip the script and be vaguely sarcastic - each time I was hooked! I suggest that all hip-hop fans read the Black Widow series - I hope Toure comes out with a full-length novel about her! GREAT!
One of the worst books that I have read........2003-03-25
The best thing about this book is the title and the cover illustration. Toure is ANOTHER African-American writer who seems ill at ease with being an African-American; so he delves in the enormous bucket of Black Cultural Stereotypes to people his lackluster stories, all in the name of being hip. From fried chicken to [lusty] preachers to athletics, there is no Black cliche beneath Toure and his word processor. The entire book read as if it were written by a really dorky guy looking at a cool party through a window. He wasn't that good when he wrote for Rolling Stone, and he is even worse here. Whomever decided to give him his book deal needs to recoup their advance and have him try again.

Maybe best of first fours...!.......2001-01-23
I say this is more (much more) bloody than others of four ordinary ElfQuest, but it is writed well. There is a story much morer than ever in "Fire & Flight". Kahvi's the new character in this( you see her in picture) , and she is the chief on elkriders, who call themselves Go-Backs. Go-Backs live in shadow of mountains were is a HOME OF HIGH ONES. And with wolfriders they found it. once more i will say: Wolfriders never die. Yes, I know one-eye just did in a "Captives of Blue mountain", but, if you read this, you se how many of Go-Backs die. And that is normal. But NONE of wolfriders. They have armors as much as Go-backs.
But to end this, I tell you: Wendy and Richard teach us in every book , and they tell about life.
eq book 4.......2000-09-07
VERY GOOD!! the best yet.
eq book 4.......2000-09-07
VERY GOOD!! the best yet.
The BEST work ever produced from the "Elfquest" couple!.......2000-04-09
Believe me, you just won't believe this! This is the most skillfully drawn and written part of the whole "Elfquest" series next to the part about the adventures in the Blue Mountain. In fact, you won't see anything like this ever again in any Elfquest tales, nor even the future ones yet to come, I suspect. The great epic of war against the bloodthirsty Trolls of the Great White North begins right after the imprisonment of elves in the Blue Mountain by the witchlike Winnowill - a real teeth-rattling clash of so many different characters, old or new with their individual personalities and differences. In additional, a whole galaxy of the fantastic environment on the far-off World of Two Moons really opens up for the very first time to your mortal human eyes - from the monstrous labyrinth of the Troll lair to the shimmering walls of the long-lost Palace of the High Ones - with a whole bagful of earth-shaking surprises to boot! If you already have this rare book or are lucky enough to get your hands on a copy, I sincerely promise you that you just won't be able to put it down, nor read it just once!
The culmination of the Quest, revisited.......2000-01-02
For the first time since the original Elfquest story was released as a 20-issue series (from 1978 to 1984), it has been published in the original black-and-white format; the new Reader's Collection printing of Book 4 includes issues 16 to 20 (the last five), dealing with the elves' campaign to wrest control of their ancestral home, the Palace of the High Ones, from a hostile, heavily armed tribe of trolls.
By now much ink has been devoted to the originality and emotional conviction of the Pinis' tale, and of course Wendy's artistic skills need no further explanation. However, it is good to see, once again, the sheer quality - and expressiveness - of the artist's pencil-work as originally presented; some of this was obscured by the mediocre coloring of the editions published since the late Eighties (quite unlike the elegant coloring-work of the earlier Donning versions of the first four volumes, still worth having after all these years).
It has been said many times before, but it should be said, again, that the Pinis demonstrate their storytelling prowess by breaking the conventions of fantasy fiction; most importantly, the fulfillment of the quest is seen to be costly, even in the loss both of lives and innocence; and the battle, though necessary for the elves to reach their goal, is not their be-all and end-all - the truly life-changing events lie further ahead. The climax of this story possesses a nuance and thoughtfulness worthy of "real" fiction, and this, even more than the superlative artwork, gives the tale its substance and emotional power.
A final note on the presentation: some printing errors have unfortunately crept into this Reader's Collection book (as they also have in volumes 5 and 12a (the first printing only) of the series) - many pages are out of their proper order, so if you are new to EQ, try to find and earlier edition of Book 4 to enable yourself to follow the plot correctly. That caution aside, it is good to have the original EQ storyline again - now priced to gain a new audience.

Book Description
Bob Pratt has spent over eighteen years researching the Brazilian UFO phenomenon. He has made eleven visits to a number of localities in the Brazilian countryside and investigated over two hundred cases, during which time he has interviewed over seventeen hundred people. The fruits of his labor are always intriguing, sometime frightening, and should give pause to those who would thoughtlessly maintain, without studying the complete score, that all our extraterresrial visitors are friendly and have out best interest at heart.
Customer Reviews:
Concise and clear, but begs big questions........2002-12-05
This book is about the UFO phenomena in Brazil. The author claims to have interviewed hundreds of witness's and abductees over the years, and this book is said to be a compilation of it.
Thankfully, the author tells you right away that this is a one sided book, and it is. The book covers the ways UFOs are terrorizing people in rural communities of Brazil.
In a nutshell, the UFO scene in brazil differs from anywhere else, in that people report being chased by ufos, emotionally terrorized by them, injured by them, being burned by thier beams of light, being levitated by them, feeling sick after thier experience, and being abducted by thier crews.
None of the people who gave testimony in this book required hypnosis to recollect thier experience, and most share the same opinion... that UFOs terrorize, and in some cases, kill people in Brazil.
That's what's in the book, on the whole, the book gets pretty repititive after the first chapter, as you fell you're reading the same stories over and over, and at the end you don't really know if you should feel more educated about the topic, or whether or not to start questioning the credibility of the author.
The big discrepancy is this: the kind of terrorizing that is described in this book, just doesn't seem to be reported anywhere else in the world, not to this extent. So the question is...
Are UFOs in brazil terrorizing people? or is the content of this book not entirely accurate?
I rate this book 2.5 stars.
An astonishing book!.......1999-08-29
Many sceptics in the USA and Europe have come up with theories intending to debunk the UFO and the alien abduction phenomena as hysterical side effects of a nutty society. Bob Pratt and his collaborator Cynthia Newby Luce are posing a great and insurmountable challenge to these sceptics. There they are, in NE Brazil, in tiny villages where no one has ever heard of Star Wars or the Grays. This is a typical "Third World" society, a place where people have a thousand priorities in their minds before dealing with "deluxe" questions such as "Are we alone in the universe?" and "Are there intelligent beings on other planets?". Yet every single extended family has experience of strange phenomena that involve UFOs (called "the fire", or "the animal" by many, a proof that this area is not exactly inhabited by trekkies and X-philes and other hi-tech minded people), and some of the most appalling abduction cases ever recorded. There are no Grays involved here, nothing similar to the much publicized cases from the USA, but instead you have humanoid abductors and hints of other dimensions. The stories related in this book are far too off, too much out of quantum physics to have been devised by those isolated and illiterate peasants with no interest whatsoever to appear on TV or to make a buck out of these stories. I have acquaintances in the cities of NE Brazil, and I have discussed this matter with them. All of them are aware of the strange UFO flaps and abductions in their area, and all of them know a relative or a friend or an acquaintance who has experienced something unworldy. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the paranormal.
Beware of the source.......1999-03-24
Bob Pratt has an axe to grind. His sponsor MUFON is no longer an independant organization and like others is controled by the Shadow Government. Interestingly enough, this expensive inquiry by an American Journalist takes place far enough from home for anyone to verify any of the alledged facts. Secret Intelligence is very fond of these weird stories they publish to (officialy) test public's gullibility when in fact they seek to accredit the idea that aliens are dangerous. This is their last ploy following the failed disinformation gambit that aliens do not exist. Until such authors expose themselves to the full scrutiny of the public, it is safe to assume that they are subsidized by self serving interests who need an ennemy to go on preparing for war.
Very Impressive.......1998-06-13
This book by author and journalist Bob Pratt gives us a good view and explanation of what hapens in the North and Northeast of Brazil. Facts presented in the book show that, if we are being visited by alien beings, they are not always good as some people think. A good field research done by this experienced Ufologist.

A photographic how-to-do-it guide to French culinary techniques.......2007-08-20
This is NOT a recipe book. It's a photographic how-to-do-it guide to basic French culinary techniques.
As I mentioned elsewhere (re: Julia Child) this is another one of those special interest books intended primarily for serious home cooks and novice pros, who'd like to broaden their inventory of classic culinary prep-skills (i.e., basic butchery, and fruit/veg preparation, processing, and presentation, etc.)
STRENGTHS:
* Jacques Pepin is classic old school. That means he doesn't roast chickens unless they've been properly trussed, poussins unless they've been spatchcocked and/or deboned, and racks of lamb unless they've been properly 'Frenched' ... and this book does an excellent job of showing (with words and photos) the basics for those techniques, along with many others. Wanna learn how to clean & truss a whole fillet mignon for grilling & roasting ? It's in there.
NITS:
* The verbal descriptions are a bit too sparse and ambiguous in places, due to poor culinary editorial oversight.
* The photographs are rather disappointing at times ... especially the fact that they're all black and white, and that they're all cold, clinical and lifeless. There is neither photographic artistry nor joy to match the artistry and joy of the chef being photographed ... and that's sad, because everyone who loves to cook deserves to be exposed to Jacques (one of my favorite chefs). I could have done a better job of the photography myself, and I'm not even a photographer.
* I think this book would have benefited from being less purely procedural oriented, and a little more recipe oriented ... without the latter, it falls a bit flat. As it, the book has a dry, surgical-like feel to it, and the black and white photos left me with a somewhat colorless impression.
Bottom line is that this book needs an expanded 2nd edition, featuring better edited and polished descriptions, and (more importantly) high quality full-color photod, by someone with an eye for both instruction, fun and artistry.
Very useful, and exhaustive, but uninspiringly photographed.
Better than Video!.......2007-07-24
We have become used to visual presentations of cooking
techniques, in fact you might say we're addicted to them.
There's a whole channel devoted to cooking video and for
some of us, the vids are the main way that cooking lore is
presented. They are reassuring: if the cook on the screen
can do it, then I can do it too.
But TV has its drawbacks. For starters, it's a one-way
medium. If you forget exactly what happened before a
particular step is shown, you're out of luck. DVD's and
TiVo are partial remedies, but rewinding is still clumsy.
So what's the best way to convey technical information
about cooking technique? It would have to be some visual
medium that showed several images at once and allowed you to
flick back and forth with the blink of an eye. It should be
self-paced so you can breeze over the obvious and puzzle
over the difficult. It should be inexpensive, easy to use
and storeable in some convenient form.
Fortunately, there is such a thing. It's called: a book.
Now you can look up the definition of 'book' on amapedia,
but take my word for it-the book's the way to go.
This book, which derives from Pepin's venerable La
Technique is a book about strategies for dealing with
food. Each technique is presented in a series of photos.
There are enough on each page so that you can see several
steps in a process at once. Without the distractions of
color and excess food styling, the whole thing becomes
very approachable. It's easy to envision yourself
performing these tasks and envisioning is what it's all
about. Best of all, most of the techniques are applicable
to a wide variety of dishes, so if you learn one technique,
you've really learned dozens of recipes.
It may be too early to say, but this 'book' idea could catch
on, maybe even make it big.
--Lynn Hoffman, author of THE NEW SHORT COURSE IN WINE and
the novel bang BANG. ISBN 9781601640005
Not as good as it could be.......2007-07-16
I have mixed feelings about this book. It is good for descriptions, but the pictures are a little small, fuzzy, and black & white for my taste. It isn't much of a cookbook of course, but instead is a step by step guide for various techniques. Nevertheless, I turn to real cookbooks for recipes, and haven't used this much. Somehow I dont use it as much as I would think I should.
Review.......2007-06-11
I'm an amateur cook. This book helped me with terminology and also with techniques that made my work easier.
Best cookbook I've found.......2007-05-15
This cookbook is really more of a tutorial book with good illustrations of various techniques and lots of hand-holding for beginner to intermediate levels of expertise. It will teach you how to carve just about ANY piece of meat, fish, our poultry.
There is a lot of emphasis on french style recipes and much of the recipes will not be something appealing to you or your family but there are some real gems. Check out the Glazed Pearl Onions recipe on page 27. This book would be the BEST wedding gift I could think of to the younger cooks looking to develop techniques for a lifetime. Highly recommended.
Book Description
The gentle, nonviolent training methods and mysteries of "horse whisperers" have recently enlightened the world's consciousness of nonviolent training methods.
Now, in The Dog Whisperer, trainer Paul Owens offers a compassionate, nonviolent approach to dog training. His spiritual approach links sound training principles with intuitive and effective insights.
Owens' compassionate training methods will help you create an emotional bridge to "plug in" and create a deeper bond with your dog than you thought possible. The Dog Whisperer offers a truly humane, revolutionary, and common sense approach to raising and training your dog.
You will learn:
* Learn "dog speak" the body language and vocalizations needed to communicate with your dog.
* How to train your dog without jerking, hitting, kicking, shocking, or shaking
* How to turn affection, play, toys, praise, and social freedom into powerful rewards.
* Learn five ways to establish a leadership role so your dog will happily follow your lead.
* Eliminate behavioral problems such as jumping, barking, and digging.
* How easy and fun training can be when you use The Nine Ingredients of Reward-Based Dog Training and turn affection, play, toys, praise, and social freedom into powerful rewards.
Customer Reviews:
This book has half of the equation.......2007-09-20
This book fails to take into account that treats and rewards are only part of the equation for learning. Most of the good manners we want our dogs to learn can be taught by what we reward and what we ignore, but not all!
I have watched mother dogs interact with their puppies many times, and in addition to playing, licking, grooming and affection, she will also use strong body language, a lift of the lip to show teeth, a growl, a nip or pinning the puppy when appropriate. There ARE times when it is appropriate to use these techniques also, and using both rewards and consequences is what produces a well balanced dogs that are a pleasure to have around. Paul's book does not address this.
A different view of things.......2007-08-23
Still reading this book as I write this review, but as far as I am concerned it was well worth the money I spent on it. I have a miniature Beagle who had me at my wits end until I started using the techniques inside. Compassion has worked so much better at reinforcing his good behaviour than throwing my hands up in frustration or yelling ever did!
A terrific book!.......2007-08-06
I just finished Paul Owen's 6 week dog training course and was so pleased I then bought this book. His obvious love for animals and his desire to communicate what's best for dogs in every aspect comes through so
clearly in a very hands on, practical, easy to understand, way. I've bought about 8 other books since getting
my Shepherd mix puppy 5 months ago but this is the book I've settled on as a permanent guideline and
source. He thinks of the things between the lines. So it's easier to figure out how it actually applies to your unique situation.
Michele (and her dog Sara)
adequate.......2007-07-26
Cesar is famous , but isn't revolutionary. Some of his techniques are outdated and inhumane! He presents the idea that dog behavior can be changed - which is good. But his approach can be modified to make it less traumatic in some instances.
I agree that a tired dog is much easier to handle and train, but not every pet owner can start each day with a 4 hour hike in the mountains. That is a luxury afforded by associating with the rich and famous.
Some Good Training Concepts But..........2007-07-02
This book has some good concepts on training but nothing that I have not seen elsewhere. A few of the reasons for the low rating are the extra chapters in learning to breath, and how to speak dog. If I want to learn how to do meditation breathing I will buy a new age book. Also the diets recommended in this book for your dog are for those who have a 6 figure income and an organic grocery store available to them. The author(s) also assume that you do not have to work to have this income based on the recommended daily routine for caring for your dog. I also was misled by the title thinking that this was the Dog Whisperer from the television show; it is not. I found this out after I bought the book and I finally got to see the show. What an injustice this book does to his television shows' name. I do not recommend this book.

Compassionate Training For The Dog You Love!.......2007-10-08
Paul Owens is the embodiment of dog, whisperer, dog trainer, and dog lover. Although our family has had a few dogs in the past it was not until we we trained our new Yorkie puppy (Harley) usuing the techniques in Paul's book that we all have become dog lovers and dog whisperers in training. Thank you Paul for teaching us the gentle, loving, respectful way to train and care for our puppy.
eagerly awaited revised edition.......2007-06-21
I thought the first edition of the DOG WHISPERER was amazing. I was however, really excited to see that Mr. Owens came up with a revised second edition which, for me, sets a new standard for positive dog training.
Dog training is ever-evolving and as good as the first edition was, the second edition reflects the best of what positive dog training has to offer. It is truly a gift to anyone interested in raising and training a dog with kindness and compassion.

I AM NOW A DOG WHISPHERER.......2007-05-03
I bought the new book and the DVD. I was also in Paul's group training class. The book and the DVD helped fill in the gaps for me while I continued to train my dog at home. I especially enjoyed the DVD. The content and presentation provides a visual for me that helps me cement my technique for training. The characterizations by the dogs are very clever and entertaining. My dog also enjoys watching the DVD. I reallly can't say enough good things about Paul and his training techniques. Just buy the book and the DVD. You will never regret it. I thank you and so does "Sweetie".
It Works! It's Practical! And with a Bigger Message that I Love!.......2007-04-23
What a great book! The choke collar always felt wrong to me and I was glad to read what Owens says about it. It makes total sense that you don't need force or even the threat of force to train a dog - or anyone else for that matter. Gee, I'd never choke my kids! Why would I want to choke my dog? I got FASTER results using the POSITIVE training methods in this book - plus I feel really good about them, too - happier dog and happier me. That other "dog whisperer" on TV seems so suave but his methods seem so mean-spirited and primitive. I read somewhere that animal humane organizations have called his methods "inhumane." A dog is family and should be treated with love. And not only for the dog's wellbeing! It's a good example for the kids! I want them to learn to treat others with kindness- no matter whether those "others" are two legged or four legged. So for me, the method I choose for training my dog is not just about dog training. It is connected with how I raise my kids and with building a world based on kindness and consideration for others. And this book was all about that and more.
Dog Whisperer Paul Owens.......2007-04-12
Finally some one who really whispers, because there is no physical force involved. A must have book! It is intelligent, funny, all about the
dogs welfare ( physical & mental), problem solving solutions, eazy to learn training methods, fast results and very informative for the reader in regards how dogs learn and progress things.

German Military Ribbon Bars fills an obvious gap in reference works on German awards and medals. Drawing on many resources from around the world, his own collection, and with many unpublished photographs from 1914-1970, author Mark Hayden examines German ribbon bars from World War I, the Inter-War years, World War II and finally those worn by veterans in the reconstituted Bundeswehr of 1957. The wide variety of construction, styles, and combinations are discussed in detail, along with information on values, availability, and reproductions. This book is sure to be a welcome addition to the libraries of militaria collectors and students of military history alike., over 80 color and b/w photos, 6"x9"

This book was a good effort for a non-German speaker writing before the internet, but it falls far short. You'd do much better reading some of the articles out there on the internet, and learning from some of the knowledgeable folks in any of the major internet forums. Numerous fake ribbon bars are unknowingly used as illustrations by Rev. Hayden - including the alleged Rommel bar on the cover.
At present, this is the best English language book on the subject. Unfortunately, it's the only English language book on the subject.

haydens research in this area is obvious. It makes for interesting reading. An excellent springboard for anyone starting out on a journey of exploration into this much neglected area of military history.

Book Description
With his clothing line available in Nordstroms, Sears, JC Penney, Dayton Hudson, Target stores, Army Air Force Post Exchanges Worldwide, and scores of other major retailers, Anthony Mark Hankins has taken the fashion world by storm. His exciting designs for everyday women's clothes regularly sell-out during his appearances on the Home Shopping Network, and represent the culmination of a determination to achieve and a limitless excitement about what he's doing. From the first dress he designed and sewed at age seven, through his education in couture in Paris, to his daring efforts to showcase his designs before reluctant executives, Hankins has always forged ahead, no matter the obstacles. Fabric of Dreams is both Hankins' personal story and his exhortation to others to pursue their ambitions. Inspiring and galvanizing, this is a great American success story told by a remarkably appealing young man.
Showcases the best example of a new generation of charismatic and highly successful African-American entrepreneurs.
Anthony Mark Hankins appears at least twice monthly on the Home Shopping Network.
Tremendous cross-promotion potential with America's largest retail stores.
Book will be featured on the hangtags of Hankins' entire clothing line for a six-month span.
Anthony Mark Hankins will donate a portion of the proceeds to the United Negro College Fund.
Debbie Markley is a well-known correspondent for People magazine with good contacts in the magazine and newspaper worlds.
