3 out of 5 stars Too clever for words.......2002-09-03

This was yet another flashy novel. The author is too concerned with showing how clever he is to be bothered with a plausible plot or believable characters. The central character in particular was totally unbelievable. As much as I wanted to like it, it grew dull and dissonant about half of the way through. The ending was totally absurd ( and not in a nice way).

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2001-03-30

Thank goodness this baby came back into print! I echo what the guys below have said, and add only that if you've read other greats in this genre--The Great American Novel, The Celebrant, Shoeless Joe, Sam's Legacy--this will stand proudly along side them, and should be next.

5 out of 5 stars Reality is just a word.......1998-02-01

In my misspent youth there was a confection that kept calling itself a gum and a candy. In fact, it was neither. "The Seventh Babe" is the literary equivalent of that product. It proports to be a baseball novel, yet how many novels on that genre tell us of a Neverland of baseball players, living outside of time and practicing the purest joyful form of the game. It might be a fantasy, yet the elements of out national pastime shape it's direction more then any dragon or demon. Did the baseball strike of a few years ago kill your love for the sport? Here is the remedy! Real yet magical. Jerome Charyn has show us there is no voice quite like his.

On the parallel world of Nextdoor, the Filoby Testament predicts the coming of D'ward the Liberator, who is to bring death to Zath, God of Death. Edward Exeter has done all he can to dodge the prophecy, but it is inescapable: he must become the Liberator or the world he has come to love will be despoiled. Fortunately, Edward has been reared to meet challenges and to lead, and so, growing more powerful every day with mana from his followers, he sets out to confront Zath. Although the people of Nextdoor welcome the Liberator, Edward's friends from Earth have mixed feelings about him, and the other gods of Nextdoor aren't pleased about his rivalry. Can Edward bring down an entire pantheon? And what will he put up in its place?

Dave Duncan's writing could be fuelled by mana from his growing numbers of fans; this trilogy is a satisfying, entertaining fantasy.

        5 out of 5 stars Future Indefinite.......2007-05-06

I've read every book Duncan has written. I think he may have bewitched his books! His character development is very thorough without being tedious. The way in which he relates parallel universes to ours is flawless and encourages me to research true history more in depth- He also writes as Kevin Hood,Demon Sword: The Years of Longdirk : 1519 (Year of Longdirk) check it out! He relates his stories to "reality" inventively and provokes many pursuits of hypothetical historical and religious scenarios for me! I'm a devout Christian, yet take no offense concerning this title's plot. He's a sly one, is Mr Duncan (ofcourse, he is a Celt!). It makes me laugh to picture Christ as a Stranger! Discover Mr Duncan and you'll never put him down, except perhaps to drive...

4 out of 5 stars The Great Game - Interesting Fantasy Series.......2006-05-13

This is an unconventional and imaginative fantasy/parallel world series. Duncan develops a parallel Earth with rather different astronomy, geography, and history. Some forms of magic allow talented individuals to move back and forth from our Earth to the Earth of the Vales, the society next door. The key feature is that strangers, people from our Earth on Valia or Valians in our universe, can acquire substantial magic powers through the accumulation of 'mana' stemming from acts of worship or sacrifice by the natives of that world. On Valia, this results in a society dominated by 'strangers' who have set themselves up as deities. The Great Game series describes a complex challenge to one of these deities in the form of the actions of the Earth born protagonist of this series, an idealistic Edwardian youth. Duncan's parallel universe is constructed well and his writing is solid. In several of his books, he has dealt with issues of duty and sacrifice, and this is no exception. There is a particularly nice use of the confrontation of youthful Edwardian idealism with harsh political realities. The plotting is clever as well, making creative use not only of the magical themes but also of the great influenza pandemic of 1917-18.

5 out of 5 stars The finale of Duncan's best series........2005-12-03

Future Indefinite has all the classic epic fantasy elements: a sharply detailed world of magic and gods, the struggle between good and evil, an ancient prophecy, a fish-out-of-water protagonist, a small band of adventurers, romance, love, and plenty of action. The book succeeds due to Duncan's use of these familiar elements in unfamiliar ways. Our protagonist is a young British gentleman, barely out of school; his love interest none other than his slightly horse-faced older cousin. The good vs. evil struggle is better classed as a lesser evil vs. a greater. And the prophecy? It's suitably cryptic...but also logical and quite possibly self-fulfilling.

Duncan's system of magic is not only ingenious, but integral to the book's plot. Anyone in their own world is mundane; transported to a new world (even if that world is Earth), they become 'Strangers', and gain 'Charisma', the ability to influence natives. The more people you influence, the more power you gain and the more you can influence them-- a perpetuating cycle. The competition for native followers leads to Machiavellian machinations between the Strangers in a world, some of whose powers rise to godlike levels.

One cannot read this book without drawing plot parallels to a slightly more famous book-- the Bible. Specifically Judas Iscariot's betrayal of Jesus Christ. However, the diffferences are just as significant, and any Christian who considers this book as "mocking" their faith is someone looking for a reason to be insulted.

Future Indefinite is the finale of Duncan's most serious-- and very likely his best-- series to date. Don't miss it.

        5 out of 5 stars Christianity parallels.......2005-03-20

This series was great, but I especially liked this last book. The way it parrellels the story of Christ is interesting, and kind of makes you think. Think in kind of herectical terms but at least it evokes thought. I would suggest it for anyone who has been analyzing their faith.

1 out of 5 stars Mocking the Belief of Millions.......2004-10-11

This is the book that made me swear off Dave Duncan forever.

The first book, while slow from time to time, held a great deal of promise, and I was looking forward to seeing the interaction between those of our world, those of Nextdoor, and those from other worlds which were said to also connect to Nextdoor -- only that never happened.

Instead of being given a rousing, epic tale of power, sacrifice, and triumph, we're given an unabashed and cynical debasement of Christ's procession and death. I kept thinking, as I was reading it, that he would sort of richochet away from it: that he would only touch on the matter briefly and move on. But he didn't. He mocked it, and millions of believers, right through to the final paragraphs. I was stunned, and I was appalled.

I have read a great many books from Dave Duncan, and thought him a reasonably good writer, but I will not be buying another book from this author.

This is style that is not that hard and due to stovetop adaptation, one can have the healthy benefits as well as unique smokin' flavor. This aid and recipe collection will aid that immensely.

Styler was on FoodNetwork showing this off, caught my eye and appetite. He has great recipe breath here: even scrambled eggs and soups and salads, to what one typically associates with smoking: ribs, sausage, chicken, fish, etc. Favorites thus far include: Smoked Salmon Pate; Phyllo Pastry Tartletts with Smoked Shrimp and Spinach Filling; Turkey-Mushroom Barley Soup; Tea-Smoked Duck with Asian Slaw; Tea-Smoked Shrimp and Asparagus Stir-Fry.

Only way to make this even more exceptional and useful would be "sources" listing and color photos. The latter would certainly heighten the price.

        Book Description

Suiseki are stones that have naturally weathered into forms suggestive of mountains, islands, and waterfalls. Highly decorative, these stones are also sophisticated tools for inner reflection. The Japanese have gathered suiseki for centuries, but the art has only become popular in the West in the last decade, especially among bonsai growers. This book is both a general introduction to suiseki and a source of detailed information. It emphasizes strategies for collecting and includes geology, aesthetics, and lists of sites and resources throughout the world. It also explains how to make attractive wooden display bases.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Suiseki: The Japanese Art of Miniature Landscape.......2001-01-09

Looking for something new to do? Something out of the ordinary? Something inexpensive and relaxing?

Maybe its time to collect suiseki (soo-ee-sek-ee).

Felix G. Rivera, founder of the California Suiseki Society, explains how to collect and appreciate suiseki in his book, Suiseki: The Japanese Art of Miniature Landscape Stones.

Rivera began collecting more than twenty years ago. Since then he has written and lectured internationally about the centuries-old art of suiseki collecting.

New and experienced collectors alike will find his book interesting and helpful.

Although they may look like nothing more than plain rocks to the casual observer, suiseki are very special stones. The forces of nature have carved them into miniature mountains, islands, waterfalls, and other landscapes. Some suiseki resemble humans or animals. Suiseki collectors are simply people who search for intriguing stones, which they bring home, clean, and display.

Among the benefits of collecting suiseki is time spent enjoying the outdoors and a fascinating stone that reminds you of the good time you had finding it. Rivera says "the true spirit of suiseki is a shared experience," and for many, the search is as pleasurable as finding that one perfect stone.

Suiseki are never machine cleaned or polished; collectors spend many relaxing hours lovingly hand-rubbing their tiny landscapes. Other than perhaps grinding off the bottoms so that they may be displayed, suiseki are not altered in any way by humans.

Rivera writes that "a suiseki may be viewed quite simply--as a pretty stone with a nice shape--or it may be viewed at various levels of complexity that embrace art, philosophy, or mineralogy or that serve as a metaphor for the connections between one's private world and the universe." He says that the various levels at which one can enjoy and appreciate suiseki make them not only art, but also enable collectors to "achieve personal satisfaction and peace."

He has filled his book with tips on where to search, what to look for, and how to clean and display suiseki. Rivera provides general and introductory material for new collectors, and detailed references for the more experienced. He includes drawings and photographs, including 32 full-color plates with detailed captions. The appendices include a glossary, bibliography, and lists of where to obtain more information, such as maps and collectors clubs.

In his forward to Rivera's book, Arishige Matsuura, Chairperson of the Japan Suiseki Association, writes "all that is required to enter the world of suiseki is to find something intriguing about the stone." Rivera opens the doors to that enchanting world with his comprehensive, but easy-to-understand book.

5 out of 5 stars A thorough and lovely book.......2000-02-01

I own all the other books listed in the suiseki section, and have read numerous descriptions of the art of Suiseki as they appear in books on Bonsai, and I feel that Mr. Rivera's book was the first to help me understand what makes a suiseki different than any fascinating stone that I might pick up. The sections on aesthetics, and display were extremely helpful. And lastly, the photos were of terrific quality, and variety. It would be the first book I would buy on the art.

            Book Description

Ron Arad's design work has the energy of modern art -- that's why, since opening his workshop in the late 1970s, he has become one of the leading designers of his generation. By recycling ancient car seats to make the Rover chair, and using scaffolding to create a series of remarkable beds, Ron Arad caught the imagination of a generation that had previously taken no interest whatever in furniture design. Also an accomplished industrial designer, his innovative creations in extruded plastic and aluminum are always in high demand.

This book features some of his most outstanding work including the Adidas sport cafes, the evolution of the Bookworm installed at the Cartier Foundation and the Tel Aviv Opera House.

                Book Description

Producing a book on fashion in the 1980s is not merely a question of immortalizing one of the most feverish periods of invention, creativity, and variety in our recent history. It also means providing a window on the increasingly pervasive advance of show-business society, and on the origins of the designer "total living" environment in which we are now permanently submerged. Ralph Lauren pillowcases, anyone? How about a sip of Absolut from my Calvin Klein Home champagne glasses? Excess: Fashion and the Underground in the 80s chronicles the achievements of the fashion establishment in Italy and the rest of the world via its protagonists and trends. It considers the who, what, where, when, and why of an industry that has become an economic phenomenon, with enormous influence on global culture and communication. It catalogues a world in which fashions by Armani, Versace, Valentino, Gianfranco Ferra, Fendi, Missoni, Moschino, Dolce & Gabbana, Fiorucci, Thierry Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Katherine Hamnett, Azzedine Alaea, Calvin Klein, and John Galliano appear in magazines like Vogue, Elle, Donna, Mondo Uomo, Harper's Bazaar, The Face, i-D, Interview, Vanity Fair, GQ, and Visionaire. It features work by 80s hotshot artists like Helmut Newton, Bruce Weber, Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin, Andy Warhol, Jenny Holzer, Robert Mapplethorpe, Barbara Kruger, Gilbert & George, Pierre et Gilles, and Leigh Bowery. Empirically organized as an index, Excess offers an indispensable point of reference for fashionistas, critics, and students. Rather than operating chronologically, it functions thematically, under such categories as Career Women, Sexy Women, American Gigolo, Night Clubbing, Wild Boys, Yuppies, and Graffiti. A special section curated by Peter de Potter is dedicated to the Neo OE0s, featuring fashions by Jeremy Scott, Louis Vuitton, Berhard Willhelm, Balenciaga, Veronique Branquinho, and Bottega Veneta, as seen in the pages of Butt, Dazed & Confused, SleazeNation, Spin, Self Service, and Another Magazine. Additionally included are a series of appendices--equally balanced between mainstream and underground--which catalogue the new professions, new words, and new fashions.

The illustrations include not only his own projects but also reference images to help delineate his creative and versatile personality. Each project will be presented through new photographs by Tom Vack (one of the most famous photographers in the design field), drawings, sketches and models, all accompanied by extensive narrative captions written by Ron Arad Associates.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. There are commentaries on design at the introduction, which I found informative and interesting. Also, the quality of work that is displayed is absolutely amazing. There is verything from furniture to lighting, to the most innovative products of our time. The editors did a fantastic job on the page layout, truly a mastery of graphic design as well. Another great series of books along these lines is the Graphis yearbooks. I love the book, and I can't stop looking at it!

                              Book Description

                              J. M Synge was born in 1871 into a strictly Protestant upper-middle-class Irish family. He spent his short life in a variety of situations; with his widowed evangelical mother, in rented rooms in Paris, in a primitive cottage on the island of Aran and in a nursing home where he died from Hodgkins' Disease in 1907 at the age of 37. At the beginning of the century Ireland was in an unsettled state as the Home Rule movement became increasingly active. At the same time in Europe a cultural revolution was unfolding with Sigmund Freud, Thomas Mann and Max Weber publishing their seminal works. McCormack's biography places Synge in the context of this vibrant era and illuminates his contribution to the spirit of the age. Although many of his personal papers have been destroyed, ten volumes of diaries still exist, as well as much of his mother's correspondence to the family and an unpublished biography of Synge by his nephew. McCormack draws on this material to produce an authoritative and extremely lively account of this great man's life and works which explodes many of the conventional assumptions about turn-of-the-century Ireland, about Irish Protestantism and about Synge's beliefs and nature.

                                Book Description

"Synge was like Frank McCourt of today but in more delicate circumstances, and he was a much greater, more original writer. . . . McCormack's biography, written in his distinctive, elegant style is refreshing and invigorating, a literary tour de force."
                                --Daily Telegraph

                                "Superb"
                                --Denis Donoghue, New York University

"Synge was a mass of contradictions, skillfully dissected in W. J. McCormack's definitive new biography. Fool of the Family is a magnificent labor of scholarship, which draws on much unpublished material to present a superbly rounded portrait."
                                --Terry Eagleton, Independent

"Well-researched and insightful. . . . At times it is beautifully gripping."
                                --Sunday Telegraph

Soulmate of James Joyce, J. M. Synge (1871-1909) is famous as the author of Playboy of the Western World, which provoked riots at its Dublin premiere in 1907. But the man himself, his peculiar religious background, and little-investigated death, have, until now, remained in the shadows. W. J. McCormack here recreates the complex religious and social environment in which Synge refined his talents as a writer. Placing Synge's life firmly in the context of the cultural revolution unfolding in Europe, this fresh and lively account will stand as the authoritative biography of this great writer.
