The whorls, chambers, and ribs of the seashell are an elegance unto themselves, but if man-made beauty can come anywhere close to this, Anthony Doerr's short stories would be perfect candidates. His debut collection, The Shell Collector, sets such high standards, sentence to sentence, that it is more like the private architecture of shells than like the random borrowings, sexual details, and flashes of insight that make up the bulk of contemporary fiction. The title story is about a blind man of 58, a scholar of shells (malacology), who retires to an isolated beach-side hut in Kenya, but then accidentally discovers a cure for a major illness in the often-deadly stings of the cone snail. "The Hunter's Wife," a second small masterpiece, describes the marriage of a Montana hunter and his much younger, psychically gifted wife. There are more conventional pieces here; well-written, resonating stories that do not attempt the sweep or descriptive wealth of "The Shell Collector," although they are still at the level of the best realistic fiction that is being published now in America. --Regina Marler
Book Description
The exquisitely crafted stories in Anthony Doerr's acclaimed debut collection take readers from the African coast to the pine forests of Montana to the damp moors of Lapland, charting a vast physical and emotional landscape. Doerr explores the human condition in all its varieties-metamorphosis, grief, fractured relationships, and slowly mending hearts-and conjures nature in both its beautiful abundance and crushing power. Some of his characters contend with tremendous hardship; some discover unique gifts; all are united by their ultimate deference to the mysteries of the universe outside themselves.

In this astonishingly assured, exquisitely crafted debut collection, Anthony Doerr takes readers from the African coast to the suburbs of Ohio, from sideshow pageantry to harsh wilderness survival, charting a vast and varied emotional landscape. Like the best storytellers, Doerr explores the human condition in all its manifestations: metamorphosis, grief, fractured relationships, and slowly mending hearts. Most dazzling is Doerr's gift for conjuring nature in both its beautiful abundance and crushing power. Some of his characters contend with tremendous hardship; some discover unique gifts; all arc united by their ultimate deference to the mysteries of their respective landscapes. In "The Hunter's Wife," a hunter's profession is challenged when he learns that his wife can communicate with animal spirits. "For a Long Time This Was Griselda's Story" features two sisters in Idaho struggling to come to terms with the very different paths they have chosen, one traveling the globe with a sideshow and one remaining with her mother in their hometown. In "July 4th," a group of wealthy Americans enters a bet with a gang of British sportsmen: the first side to land the largest freshwater fish on each of the continents wins. The title story describes a blind marine biologist who isolates himself in a thatch-roofed kibanda in Kenya, only to be thrust into the spotlight when he accidentally discovers the cure for a fatal disease. Like all of Doerr's stories, it shimmers with beautiful language and transports readers to a perfectly realized, magical world of his own creation. The Shell Collector is an enchanting and imaginative debut by a young writer embarking on an important literary career.

Engaging, thoughtful, and powerful.......2007-04-10
Doerr may have received an award for only one of the short stories in this collection, but they are all certainly worthy of much recognition as is he! This is a tremendous collection of very fine short stories by a single author, and they are endearing, raw, superbly moving, and magical, all at the same time. These are the kind of stories that you read over and over and take away something different each time you read them. All the stories are solidly written with well-developed characters who keep you engaged, start to finish. I cannot recommend this book enough!
Tony Doerr's Debut ROCKS!!!!.......2005-09-15
An exceptional collection of short stories that exudes life and illicits strong human emotions. A must read for anyone who is moved by beautiful writing. This is a good read anytime, anywhere. Doerr's words will certainly move you. Also check out his first novel: About Grace.
The Role of Mystery in Fiction.......2005-06-28
If you were to tell me that The Shell Collector features mostly stories about people who find majesty, wonder, awe, and rejuvenation through the Mystery of Nature, I would roll my eyes and dismiss the story collection as a precious sentimental meditation on the natural world worthy of a Hallmark Card. However, the aforementioned themes are rendered with expertise, vigor, and indeed pure poetic prose so that even a cynic like myself was able to surrender to Doerr's magical stories. Here are some highlights:
1. The Shell Collector: A scientist who collects shells lives like a hermit in a isolated coastal land in Kenya where he discovers an elixir, derived from a sea snail, which forces him to contemplate the manner in which civilization usurps all of nature's wonders for its commercial purposes.
2. The Hunter's Wife: A man takes his wife into the barren wilderness where she eventually leaves him to pursue a career as a celebrity New Age figure.
3. The Caretaker: An African refugee who has seen unspeakable evil during civil war and has been coerced into doing something that violates his conscience moves to an ocean house in Oregon where he learns, through the help of a young woman, to find his redemption.
4. Mkondo: A white fossil hunter goes to Tanzania where he becomes obsessed with a young African woman whom he marries and takes back to Ohio. There the woman languishes in despair until she finds her vocation in photography, which brings her closer to nature.
Over and over again, Doerr pits the vulgarity and soul-sapping forces of civilization with the pure spiritual powers of nature as his characters attempt to straddle both worlds.
For a thematic companion to Doerr's stories, you might want to look into the 1971 film masterpiece, set in Australia, called The Walkabout, which wonderfully is now available on DVD.
The Nature of Magic.......2004-12-30
Man and nature. Writers have struggled to make sense of this tortured relationship since the beginning of literature. Lesser authors might shy away from attempts to tread the same hallowed ground explored by titans like Hemingway, Steinbeck or Faulkner. But Anthony Doerr, in "The Shell Collector," succeeds on his own quiet and gentle merits in portraying the pathos of human beings separated from their natural selves by the forces of civilization.
By and large each story here is a gem, revolving around a central, singular, simple character with a magical nature. In the title story, a blind recluse in the south seas becomes an unlikely and reluctant healing guru by way of a heretofore venemous shellfish. Doerr renders the man's heartache with graceful, stunning empathy as his life careens away from him, and then circles around and back, a necessary cycle of pain and redemption.
The rest of the book opens up the themes introduced with such loving artistry in the first story. "The Hunter's Wife" and "Mkondo" both weave tales about women separated by marriage from their true selves like Persephone from Demeter, living with men whose love they accept, but live to regret. In "Mkondo", the bride, removed from her home in sub-Sarahan Africa, laments of her new environment: "Nothing grew, nothing lived; even the light seemed dead, falling from naked bulbs screwed into the ceiling." From her musings Doerr evokes the vision of a vibrant, colorful plant dessicating under false sunlight.
The most powerful and and haunting story of the collection is "The Caretaker." A refugee from the Liberian civil war loses his mother and his way of life, washes up on the shores of Oregon, and carves out a new existence for himself on the inhospitable grounds of a software mogul's estate. Broken, haunted by the violent real-life nightmares that drove him from his home, Joseph Saleeby seeks solace in hiding, tending a garden fertilized by the gargantuan remains of a beached whale. His sense of life comes back to dazzling color as the garden germinates: "By mid June the stems of his plants are inches high..the buds have separated into delicate flowers; what loooked like a solid green shoot was actually a tightly folded blossom. He feels like shouting with joy". But there's another encounter in store for Joseph, one that will bring him yet again into a denatured world where he must prove his mettle.
Two of the stories--"For a Long Time This Was Griselda's Story" and "July 4th"--are a little less accessible than the others, though no reader will soon forget the unique talents of the metal eater in "For a Long Time..." "July 4th" seems more derivative than the others. It recounts the misadventures of a group of Americans as they search for the best fishing venue in Eastern Europe. Sound like a lost generation, anyone?
But these are quibbles. Even the weaker stories teach important lessons. The price of renouncing our natures is a high one, the author seems to say. But it may be inevitable in the course of human life, and it may even purchase a round trip ticket right back to where we belong. And the journey, for all its pain and trauma, can be magical.
A moving debut.......2004-05-15
I'll keep it short and sweet. Three things make this book stand out from other short story collections:
a) It is written incredibly well. The stories flow effortlessly, are written with excellent imagery and figurative language, and invoke everything from heartache to nausea.
b) It is one of those books that you could read one time for enjoyment... or you could read it three times and dig up all the many meanings.
c) This is not your Nora Roberts soap opera. Anybody can use sex and violence to make a book captivating, but it takes a master to weave a beautiful story from something more simple. Without becoming boring, Doerr masters this.
Read it, love it, and tell your friends to do the same.

"It is written that there are no rules in war.".......2004-07-30
Dragonwall, is the second book in the Empires Trilogy, and deals primarily with Shou Lung (located to the far east of Faerun), and its inhabitants.
Picking up from where Horselords left off, the book sheds light on General Batu, leading the imperial forces in the defense of his homeland against Khahan Yamun and the Tuigan army.
Whereas Horselords looks at the story from the point of view of Koja and the Tuigan, Dragonwall looks at the continuation of the same story from the point of view of General Batu and the Shou Lung. It's not bad, just a bit unusual, and it does take some getting used to.
The plot as a whole is excellent! The book is so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another plane of existence and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. Moreover, Troy Denning does a great job of presenting the distinct culture and civilization of the peoples of the Orient. He has done a great deal of research in order to provide such an accurate and lucid description of the Chinese-like people.
Red Wizards, Gnolls, epic battles, sieges, political intrigue, blackmail, assassinations, and betrayal are all about.
In conclusion, Dragonwall has something for everyone, and is strongly recommended to all Forgotten Realms fans, especially Eastern/Oriental enthusiasts.
A wild wild ride!.......2003-03-13
This is an absolutely amazing novel. The second book in the Empires trilogy, it completely avoids the "middle book syndrome". Most 2nd novels in a trilogy are about nothing and contain a whollllllle lot of travel, but this book is a very personal tale.
Batu is a general in the Shou army who is charged with stopping the Tuigan invaders. His wife is left behind to deal with the court. Out of these 2 simple plot devices a fascinating tale unfolds.
Without revealing anything I will say this, the novel is a very personal journey by Batu as he tries to deal with the invaders. The pleasant thing about this tale is the unexpected twists it takes. What you expect at the beginning of this story is not what you get at the end. Being that it is the 2nd book in a trilogy there are some things that you know MUST happen, such as the Tuigans continuing on to battle Cormtyr in the 3rd novel. This does not mean that a very powerful battle does not occur. It is the results of the battle and its fallout that are surprising.
All of the characters are interesting, and seem like real people. In fact, it is the honest portrayals that make this such a good book. After everything that Batu goes through his responses seem real, not as if they were manipulated to fit an outline.
It was further enhanced by the appearance of characters from the 1st novel, who come across as true to their portrayals in Horselords.
If you want a really good story with action and personality read Dragonwall.
The art of war and politics.......2000-03-23
This books holds the second dimension of the 3 dimensional gem called "The empires triology". Leading you to view the desicions and lives of 3 leaders all engulfed in a sweeping war makes you think a bit about right and wrong, winner and loser. Almost as good as "Horselords" this book opens a gate to the land of Shou Lung, it's court and it's field. As a young general attemps to hold the kingdom's borders from the sweeping horde of Tuigan barbarians, while his wife attempts to save his reputation and command from the hands of spy sent to undermine him.
A book that engulfs you in battles and conspirasies. A Must BUT can be fully enjoyed only after reading "Horselords".
A hidden gem; the very best of AD&D fantasy.......1998-06-13
Upon finding out this book is no longer in print, I felt upset-- upset that so many lovers of fantasy literature will never be able to read it. Fans of AD&D novels who are forgiving of the weaknesses of the genre will be shocked to find those weaknesses missing here. DRAGONWALL is a study of a man who struggles; he struggles between duty to empire and duty to his ancestry, love of family and love of emporer, and the hateful but necessary arena of politics versus the glorious but hardship-ridden theatre of war. Stunningly, this book satisfies on a variety of levels; the intrigue of court politics is intricate and suspenseful, the scenes of battle are breathtaking and involving, and the personal struggles wracking the protagonist make you understand him deeply. You will admire him and suffer with him. If any "fantasy" novel can bridge the gap between entertainment reading and literature, this is the one. Try to find it--it's incredible.

Customer Reviews:
Good read!.......2005-03-03
One of my favorite sci-fi novels since I first read it back in high school, '86. Well-written, no-holds barred and realistic, one of DeChancie's more "alive" stories. Easily read, but has plot twists within plot twists. Good first book for that young, budding sci-fi reader you buy books for, mature but not over the top science is understandable, not childish and stupid. Recommended for a good, hard to put down read. First of three-part series. Can easily be a stand-alone adventure, if other two novels are unavailable.
What a movie this would make!.......2001-04-19
John Dechancie's Star Rigger series is a true gem. Can't find a book or series worth reading these days? (I know for me its getting to be a rare thing) pick up this series. DeChancie handles time travel and paradox with masterful flare. The charaters are complete and well rounded. The style of writing reminds me of H Beam Pipers "The Fuzzys". I would love to see a movie made of this story. Heck! I've read the series three times so I would most likley see that movie that many times.
An undiscovered gem........2001-01-05
In some distant future, this wonderful trilogy will be reprinted, and recognized as DeChancie's masterpiece. Original ideas, marvelous, awesome alien technology, well-developed characters in a strong, well paced plot and delightful wordplay make this series re-readable, and well deserving of the term =Classic=.
Find these books. They are worth the effort of tracking down.
One of the most entertaining trilogies I have ever found!.......1999-03-06
I ran across 'Starrigger' (Book One) in a second-hand store 16 years ago, read it over and over, then began my hunt for the rest of the set. The story is so imaginatively creative and colorfully interwoven with a plot line that will capture anyone's imagination that looks for timeless sci-fi that does not age. This story combines the very best of everything I could wish for in a book that can be read several times without losing it's captivating effect. I found myself lost in the book untill I was finished. A true gem. All I can say is read all three books to get the full effect. John DeChancie has my highest admiration for a story well told.
Space Truckers & Intragalactic Intrigue.......1997-12-19
John DeChancie's "Starrigger" series, including "Red Limit Freeway" and "Paradox Alley", takes independent trucker Jake McGraw, his father Sam, who inhabits the truck itself, and beautiful hitchhiker Darla on a wild ride across several planets. They're being chased by many people with a single mission... they want the map of the interplanetary Skyway he's supposedly carrying. The Skyway is the superhighway linking dozens, possibly hundreds of planets across the galaxy. Much of it is unexplored, and the fabled Roadmap becomes the desire of several large interests, including an alien race called the Reticulans, the human government known as the Colonial Assembly, and nasty villain Corey Wilkes, head of the wildcat trucker union TATOO. Every time Jake turns a corner someone, or something, is on his tail. The Starrigger Trilogy is probably the most entertaining sci-fi story I've ever read, (including works by the biggest writers), and it remains my favorite to this day. It's a balance of classic sci-fi's dream technology and fantastic alien worlds, blended with good humor and Jake McGraw's everyman view of his life, his bizarre situation, and his attempts to unravel himself from the whole mess. Find out what awaits him "at the legendary end of the universe". I suggest this series to anyone who can get their hands on it. Also, try his 8-volume "Castle Perilous" series for humorous fantasy, monsters and magic.

Book Description
Known as the "Picasso of chocolatiers," Michael Recchiuti creates confections that are every bit as daring and original as any of his namesake's artworks. But unlike the painter, the chocolate maker has made it possible for even the amateur to achieve his artistry. In Chocolate Obsession Recchiuti, owner of the famed artisanal chocolate company in San Francisco, divulges his professional secrets and techniques, allowing home cooks to reproduce his exquisite confections in their own kitchens.
Opening with a complete discussion of chocolate from bean to bar, the book goes on to offer detailed instructions for dipped chocolates, truffles, and molded chocolates, including Recchiuti's signature ganache flavors: Earl Grey tea, burnt caramel, tarragon with grapefruit. Also featured are recipes for such sinfully delicious treats as Chocolate Shortbread Cookies with Truffle Cream Filling, Double Dark Chocolate Soufflés, and Rocky Recchiuti Brownies. With more than 60 recipes in all, this book will satisfy even the most obsessive chocolate lovers among us.

Great Stuff .......2007-10-04
I always wanted to make some kind if chocolates and this is the book that inspired me! His directions connected with me instantly. Giving me the confidence I needed. The tarragon with candied grapefruit was my first attempt. And they came out exquisit. Lemon verbena and the anise with pink peppercorn were also got rave reviews. The tahitan marshmallows were also a first. Wonderful just wonderful! The malt ice cream ,roasted banana ice cream. And i can go on and on. I'm a middle aged guy who likes to cook and bake and now i do chocolates. Get the book, you'll be very happy you did.
beyond obsession..........2007-09-14
After moving from California up to Seattle, this book was published just in time to fulfill my "Recchuiti withdrawals." Anyone who loves chocolate beyond healthy amounts (hehe) needs this book! The best brownie recipe - EVER - should be the selling point here! The recipes are not for "semi-homemade people" if you know wha I mean - set aside time to love and enjoy the process of making delicious confections!
Professional recipes, must have for serious chocolatier.......2007-03-31
Contents of book: About 25 chocolate candy recipes (1/2 the book), Snacks (brownies, cookies, cupcakes, souflees), chocolate drinks, and ice creams.
The best part of this book is that Recchiuti gives you the recipes of the real chocolates that he sells on his website and stores. Tea, Burnt Caramel, tarragon/grapefruit, cardamonom, malt with honeycomb, fleur de sel, rose caramel, kona, ginger, and so on - they are all there. Given that Recchiuti is known as one of the top chocolatiers in the country, this is really incredible. If you are a serious chocolate candy maker, this book is a must-have.
The difficulty level of this book is hard for chocolates, easy for other parts. Most of the chocolate recipes use invert sugar (not a common ingredient). Some of the spices are specialized (verbena, or rose water). Molding technique is obviously difficult. On the other hand, the other sections are at a much lower level of difficulty.
This book is not heavy on technique pictures or descriptions of techniques. You almost have to know the techniques before you do them.
If you are looking for chocolate techniques, "chocolate confections" by Greweling is a better book, as is "Making Artisan Chocolates" by Shotts.
To me, this is more of a ganache recipe book.
For me, the bottom line is that Recchiuti shares his recipes for his *entire line* of top end chocolates. He's giving away all his trade secrets in this book. You gotta have it for that reason.
A Chocolate Lover's Dream.......2007-01-15
A very well written and thought out book, beautiful photographs and excellent recipes that are easy to follow. A must have for chocoholics.
chocolate obsession book.......2007-01-15
I was more than pleased with my purchase. Transaction was very simple and quick. Delivery was incredible fast. Could not believe that I received my book as quick as I did. A++++++++++++

The monks of New Skete have been breeding and training dogs at their New York monastery for more than 20 years. Their philosophy of raising dogs accentuates the essential human-canine bond, whereby owners must learn to understand a dog's instincts, needs, and behavior. Understanding a dog, the monks say, is the key to successfully training him. They first published this philosophy in their 1978 classic guide How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend. Now the monks concentrate on the first three months of a puppy's life in The Art of Raising a Puppy.
The book observes a litter of monastery puppies from birth to 12 weeks. Tender photographs and dialogue reflect these precious first few weeks of life. Even at this time, the human-canine link is vital; the monks stress the importance of gentle touch to help forge this connection. Basic puppy training techniques are explored and executed, all of which puppy owners should find easy to implement. Virtually all types of dog problems and dog training are examined in the book, always in compassionate and easily comprehensible language. The monks also look well beyond surface training techniques to analyze the roots of dogs' problems and explain how training can help. Owners are taught how to gently assert dominance over their dog, which will make for a long-lasting and fulfilling relationship. Beautiful black-and-white photographs of monastery puppies will pull at every heartstring.

Wonderful addition to puppy training collection.......2007-10-05
I love this book. It is well written and full of smart advice. The beginning chapters about puppy birth and development are beautiful and a welcome change from the bland how-to books. I don't think this or any book is going to teach you how to raise a great dog all on it's own. But this book, teamed with others and real life instruction in a puppy class, will do you a world of good. Although some of it's ideas, specifically about the Alpha wolf, have now been disproved the heart of the book is still valid and I highly recommend it.
Must read for any pet owner.......2007-09-21
Even if someone does not have a dog, I'd recommend this book to any pet owner. The "Big Idea" of this book is that "obedience" actually translates into "to listen" and "discipline" actually means to teach.
The Monks emphasize that their is a relationship (they would say a divine relationship) between a dog and his owner...but that relationship is based upon mutuality...a mutuality of respect and responsiveness. (Kind of a nice way to look at human relationships as well.)
Flowing from this is that the owner has a responsibility to be a thoughtful, kind teacher and to attentively "listen" to their dog...not to "correct", not "punish", but to understand their dog and to teach their dog with respect and kindness.
If you have an opportunity to view the Monks DVD or VHS on this topic you can see the love and understanding these men have for their dogs...they aren't simply "training", they have a deep and profound relationship with their dogs.
This is not only a "dog training" book, this is a great book on how to relate to all living creatures.
A "Must Have" for anyone with a puppy.......2007-08-29
This is the best book I've found on raising a puppy, by far. It's easy to read, the instructions are clear, the approach is humane, and the monks add a touch of philosophy that fills the book out nicely. As we've followed the monk's approach our puppy has learned and behaved exactly as
the monks said he would. It's made for a happier puppy and a happy family all around. We've found several dog trainers who use the monk's approach with great success. Excellent puppy traininng book!
A must own.......2007-08-29
No one should get a puppy before reading this book.
Best no-nonsense approach to raising a puppy. I have had many dogs in my life and I still learned stuff from this book.
Puppy raising DOGma from the Monks..........2007-08-26
Let me begin by saying that I am not an expert on this topic, but I love my puppy... and feel I need to be.
The merits of this book is that it documents the THINKING, experience and methodology of a group of monks who've dedicated their lives to raising German Shephards... the downside is that it ONLY discusses their method, and does not take into account any others - - of course, this is not a fault of the book - - they are simply describing their approach (which they feel happens to be right, and all others wrong), but while their method is not "radical", I'm wondering if the method is really for everybody and all dogs... (The method, incidentally is somewhat orthodox leash training - - and does not use treats as rewards... I worry that some people might get out of hand with the POP-no's, and it may not be for PEOPLE who might confuse the corrective associations with acts of utter dominance and intimidation! Unfortunately, in reading a book, how can a person's leash technique be corrected. In the end, at one extreme of the scale the monks warn against coddling and spoiling the dog... but on the other hand, we don't want to traumatize it either!)
another point: their writing style is easy to understand, but at the same time a bit dry (no warm and funny anecdotes, or as another reviewer elsewhere said "psychobabble") - - again, a plus or minus depending upon how you look at it.
In the end, the fact that this book does DOCUMENT in detail the process of how they raise their pups makes it GREAT reading... however I think the key caveat is that it should be supplemented with other reading...

Book Description
This stunning volume focuses on the qualities of the old things in our homes (the patina of an old table, pewter dulled by age, old floorboards that creak) and how to live with and incorporate them into our personal aesthetic. Divided into chapters by the qualities of oldâpeeling, dried, tarnished, faded, chipped, frayed, rusty, and mossyâthis unique book not only pays tribute to furniture, textiles, china, silver and other accessories with these qualities but also shows us how best to preserve, adapt, and arrange them. Lavishly illustrated with beautiful photographs that highlight the warm colors and rich textures of wood and paint, cloth and leather, For the Love of Old also includes ideas and recipes for saving old items from the junk pile, preserving and caring for the old things you have, giving newer things a lived-in feel, and bringing an enduring personality to every home.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book.......2007-09-03
This book is beautiful. It is a coffe table copy. One you want to use for display. I was drawn with interest to someone who sees beauty in such old things. The book is very unique. I'm glad I have a copy.
Great Book!.......2007-02-07
I loved Mary Randolph Carter's book American Family Style so much and this book seemed to me like a part two of that original book. Although this book wasn't filled with pictures of her family it was filled with the same warmth and comfort as the original. Even though it may not be filled with exactly the things I might put in my own home it is something I enjoy reading. You can tell the author truly LOVES these lost, rusty, beautiful things. I truly can appreciate that.
Love It or Hate It - I Loved It.......2007-02-01
Many, indeed virtually all, of the books we see on interior decorating show rooms set with furnishings that are either brand new or antiques that are pristine and beautiful. They are a very, very long way from those long ago college days when glasses came from empty jelly jars and none of the plates or silverware matched.
Ms. Carter's book is a celebration of the old, the frayed, etc. The individual table settings don't have to be all alike. They just need to be interesting, attractive, have a story to tell. I particularly liked her comments regarding silver, probably because I've gotten a lot of it from my mother and grandmother.
Ms. Carter has an artistic eye that sees art where other people see junk. She matches her eye with her photographic skills that enable her to show exactly what she means. It's a book to be celebrated by those of us who like garage sales, thrift shops and making that special find.
FOR THE LOVE OF OLD: LIVING WITH CHIPPED, FRAYED, TARNISHED, FADED, TATTERED, WORN , AND WEATHERED THINGS THAT BRING COMFORT..........2007-01-10
AN AWESOME, INSPIRING, AND COMFORTING BOOK FOR THOSE WHO LOVE THE OLD AND ECLECTIC LIFESTYLE. SIMPLY WRITTEN AND BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WITH PHOTOS FIT FOR FRAMING. A GREAT RAINY DAY READ AND SUITABLE FOR THE COFFEE TABLE.
Not her best..........2007-01-09
I love her other books, I was so looking forward to reading this one over a long afternoon. I fell hook, line and sinker for her romance with flea markets and flea market treasures. This one looks like she took the leavings off the cutting room floor from her other books, packaged it nicely and called it good. Except it is not, good that is. Sorry but this stuff just looks like junk that I would not give a second glance to at a yard sale or flea market. And the price is so high!! Mutton done up as lamb.

Book Description
The book is based on a series of unique oral histories and interviews with actors who love the stage first and foremost. Editor Joan Jeffri focuses on the experience of actors in their training and career development, and on their relationships to society, culture, and institutions. Although names like Alan Alda are recognizable from other media, these actors all grew up being nourished by the stage. Their stories show that theatre is everywhere in this country--not only on Broadway, but also in churches, in schools, in regions, and in towns. These interviews and a thorough introduction provide a history of the American theatre for almost a century--the Yiddish theatre, the WPA, the start of regional theatre, off- and off-off-Broadway, and the Great White Way--through the voices of those who lived it.
