Book Description

In this stirring debut novel, Rebecca Reisert enters the world of Shakespeare's Macbeth, in which a young woman's search for vengeance plunges her into a legendary tale of deceit, murder, and retribution....

I have made my life an arrow, and His heart is my home. I have made my life a blade, and His heart is my sheath....So pledges Gilly, vowing to destroy Macbeth, the most powerful man in medieval Scotland. She escapes from the hut in Birnam Wood in which she has lived for the past seven years, ever since she was taken in by Nettle and Mad Helga -- wise women whose powers are widely feared and reviled. Disguising herself as a servant boy, Gilly finds work in the kitchen of her enemy's castle. Soon she insinuates herself into the lives of Macbeth and his beautiful, dangerous wife, subtly manipulating the forces governing their fate. But as Gilly moves closer to her private revenge, she finds herself at risk when she confronts the startling legacy of a long-concealed heritage.

Download Description

Rebecca Reisert's mesmerizing first novel re-imagines Macbeth, Shakespeare's classic tragedy of power and madness, through the eyes of a mysterious young woman on a dangerous quest for vengeance. For the girl called Gilly, life in the wilds of Birnam Wood is little more than a desperate struggle for survival. Seven long years have passed since she was first taken in and sheltered by Nettle and Mad Helga, the hut-dwelling wise-women whose inscrutable powers of alchemy and prophecy are feared and reviled throughout good King Duncan's kingdom. Living under the threat of deadly persecution by witch-hunting villagers, the threesome ekes out a life by peddling potions and elixirs, scavenging for food, and robbing the bloodied corpses of Scotland's battle-scarred hills for precious metals and weapons. But Gilly is haunted by recollections of a much brighter life. She clings to fading memories of a time when she was contented and adored -- until tragedy swept all that happiness away and young Gilly's life was changed forever. I have made my life an arrow, and His heart is my home. I have made my heart a blade, and His heart is my sheath....Obsessed with avenging her loss and putting out the fire that still rages in her heart, Gilly has dedicated herself to destroying Macbeth, the boundlessly ambitious man who took away her childhood, and his goading wife. Disguising herself as a poor servant boy, she insinuates herself into their lives and, as she bears horrified witness to Macbeth's violent path to power, Gilly subtly begins to take a hand in the forces governing his fate. But as the culmination of her revenge draws near, Gilly finds her own life at risk when she confronts the troubling legacy of a long-concealed heritage.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting read for theatregoers.......2006-07-17

I actually read this while attending a theatre critics' conference, and found it hard to put down. It's such a SMART retelling of the Macbeth story, and it's fun the way characters who are important in Shakespeare's play are encountered here... usually we see them "from a distance," the title character Gilly encounters them, and THEN it's revealed who they are.

Gilly is a young girl who lives with two crones in the forest. They look through dead bodies on the battlefields for goods, and prepare potions and herbs for villagers. We learn early on that Gilly has a grudge against HIM (who we can guess is Macbeth), but it's not until near the end of the novel that we know why. She gets her caretakers to help her, and inserts herself into Macbeth's castle, dressed as a boy.

Her journey towards revenge, and also towards becoming really human-- caring for a retarded child, taking responsibility-- is engrossing.

I saw Macbeth shortly after reading this book and had to smile at certain scenes where Reisert had convincingly inserted Gilly into the action in her retelling.

Resiert's prose is clear and often moving. She creates a consistent, powerful medieval world. She taught and directed the play for years before writing this book and it shows. It's a quick read, but thoroughly enjoyable, and I look forward to her next.

4 out of 5 stars The Third Witch - Beyond Enjoyable.......2006-04-06

The Third Witch is a first novel for a teacher and Shakespere 'addict'. The premise of the book is set around the story of Macbeth and the "3 witches" he meets along the roadside. (Which is taken from the play "macbeth").
The story is told by Gilly, who starts out as a young girl. She has been befriended by two elderly ladies upon her wandering through the woods. She was raised by them after her family was 'lost' in a war-of-sorts. Gilly spends her day gathering herbs and foraging through fields after bloody massacres, looting for stuff for trade. Gilly has only one desire in life, and that is to kill "Him" the one who took her family.

With the not-so cooperative help of the ladies, Nettle and Mad Helga, Gilly sets off on her adventure to find "Him" and kill him. The story is filled with Gilly's trials and errors as she learns just what it is she is fighting for. She has trouble caring for anyone, even herself.

This is a marvelous story... and highly reccomended if you enjoy Shakespere and his 'tales'. The book is well written and provides concerte images, so you never had to wander far to know how it feels to be Gilly.

The Third Witch.... 4.5 out of 5 stars

2 out of 5 stars It could have been so much better.......2004-06-14

A friend recommended The Third Witch to help with my research for my production of Macbeth. I must say the concept of the book was intriguing, but the pay-off was less than satisfying. I am not going to write a short synopsis as most of the other reviews have one. Instead, I want to talk about my major problems with the book. The book is written entirely in the first-person. This may not be a bad thing for a lot of people, but I found it impossible to like Gilly until the fairy-tale ending. I found her annoying, selfish and too dogmatic and I feel had she be written in the third-person (like the loveable supporting characters especially Pod, Lisette and Fleance) it would have been easier to like and even care for her. Putting Gilly at the center of the story meant she had to be present in every scene for the story to move on. That placed her in some of the most unlikely places in the Macbeth plot, and at many left me screaming at the page.

Don't get me wrong, I think this was a brave choice for a debut and at times it worked wonderfully but I felt no emotional connection to Gilly. In a book like this, written in the first-person, the reader needs to feel connected to the subject. If that doesn't happen, the rest of the story falls-flat, and I'm sorry to say this one fell hard.

3 out of 5 stars A great idea, but it just doesn't come across..........2004-02-25

Let me start by saying that when I saw this book in the store, I had to have it. The title and the cover art were seductive enough, but as soon as I found out that the premise surrounded the story of "Macbeth" from the point of view from one of the witches(!), well... it was sold.
The idea is fantastic! It starts as an account of the tale of Gilly, the third "witch" who haunts Macbeth and foretells his doom. Gilly swears revenge against Macbeth for reasons that are unveiled throughout the book. She has a mantra that she repeats throughout the novel: "I have made my life an arrow, and His heart is my home. I have made my life a blade, and His heart is my sheath." As the book progresses, Gilly abandons her life as a woman of the woods to throw herself into the surroundings of the Inverness castle (where she can be close to Macbeth and seek her revenge). The book progresses into a epic story of Gilly's hatred conflicting with her moral growth.
Now let me expound on what I did not like about this book. I was bored for the first two hundred pages. I kept waiting for something to happen. Quite a bit Does happen, but it's all in the last third of the book. Second, Gilly's mantra become annoying.. Gilly, herself, becomes annoying. She eventually grows up, but it happens so quickly that it's not really believable. It seemed to me, that Ms. Reisert painstakingly worked her way through the novel. Every conventional emotion that Gilly should feel is described to a "T." However, it seems a bit contrived. The novel seems more of an act of a need for accomplishment than a wonderful, seamless novel that harkens to the beauty of Shakespeare's "Macbeth."
All told, the novel is a very good debut novel. I think that Ms. Reisert could become more comfortable with herself as a writer (novelist) and then she would convey even more realistic characters. The characters of Nettle, Pod, and even Lady Macbeth are wonderfully explored and seem to lead to a wonderful start toward Ms. Reisert's success as a writer. The idea was brilliant, but I wish things had tied together more fluidly. Overally, I would give this novel a 3.5 out of 5. A worthwhile read, but I recommend reading "Macbeth" first.

5 out of 5 stars Gillyflower, The MacBeth Witch.......2003-02-18

Told from the viewpoint of one of the three witches in Shakespeare's MacBeth, this is a historical fiction story told almost completely in the 1st person. The story sides more with Shakespeare than it does true history, but that doesn't effect the flow.

Gilly is a young teenage girl, hellbent on revenge. Her only desire in life is to kill Macbeth, and she makes many mistakes because she is so one-sighted in this. No matter how she tries to convince herself she's incapable of feeling, her true nature keeps appearing. She disguises herself as a boy and works as a kitchen scullery in order to get closer to Macbeth, which is when her life, and her plans, take a real turn. While wise in many ways, the flipside shows her immaturity in so many others.

There's a nice little bit in the back for book clubs, as well as a brief interview with the author. If you like historical fiction or Shakespeare's Macbeth, you'll enjoy this.

Book Description

Martin Martel is an exile in trouble with the gods in this SF novel by the bestselling writer L. E. Modesitt, Jr., now back in a new trade paperback edition from Tor. After finding out that he has unusual powers, he is banished from the planet Karnak. Martin is thrust into the tranquil world of Aurore, vacation paradise for the galaxy. There he finds that the reality of Aurore is much different from its serene veneer. The gods are wantonly cruel and indifferent to the chaos they cause: are they really gods or just men and woman with larger-than-life powers? Whatever the answer, Martin Martel must challenge their supremacy to defend his life, love, and the fate of all mankind.

1 out of 5 stars Abstractionist Period?.......2007-08-29

L.E. Modesitt, Jr. is an incredible writer, I have enjoyed dozens of his novels. This wasn't one of them. Quite honestly, the deeper I got into it, the more confused I became. From other reviews here, it is suggested that this is a novel about a thwarted love interest, politics, religion, revenge and redemption. I'll have to take their word for that, I read only a mishmash of hazy ideas and unconnected lines. Quite a departure from the author's "Recluse" and "Corean Chronicles" sagas, which were straightforward and enjoyable fantasies with a strong beginning, middle and finish.

Happily, this novel does have a "search inside" option, I suggest you avail yourself of that opportunity before buying it. If the first few pages don't throw you into an esoteric spin, you might enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars almost perfect.......2006-11-03

I'm a sucker for a good man against the universe story and this is one of the best. The book is a bit hard to follow the first time through. I'd almost suggest reading the first half or so and then starting again... it'll make much more sense. The ending sequence was a bit convoluted, but the story flowed well and the characters were realistic. Also like the darkness and light tie ins.

4 out of 5 stars Do you love the Recluce books?.......2006-08-02

Perhaps you are considering this book because you love the "Recluce"-books by the same author and you are now asking yourself if you would be disappointed or not?

Well, there are many similarities between this book and his later work. Yes, the hero is a young man who is exiled because of his powers. Yes, he does take up a humble occupation as a sort of TV announcer (rather than a junior engineer, carpenter, smith etc). And yes, circumstances finally force him to use his VAST powers to 'set things right'. The latter includes sending ships to new planets (as in Fall of Angels).

The writing style is also similair with most of it written as a sort of first hand account of the events and small parts as excerpets from the legends the events engendered.

What about order and chaos? Well, there are different kinds of magical power, the hero's black power while other beings possess white/gold powers. The powers are much more neutral and less intricately described than in the later works. But there is a lot of using "senses" and so on.

The only thing you do not get is the medieval setting, this is more SF and futuristic.

In short, you will find all the elements of his later work in one brief volume. That makes for an exciting book spanning a lot of philosophical, moral and religiuous questions.

* If you have read his later work, you might enjoy reading this to see where it all started.
* If you have not read his later work, this might be a good place to start.

4 out of 5 stars fine futuristic tale.......2006-05-31

With a Query next to his name Martin Martel is unable to live as a student on the planet Karnak and his girlfriend Kryn, the duke's daughter, has the guards fire at him when she realized he was an esper. The Brotherhood takes him to Aurore a planet many scientists believe should not exist, a place where people with esper powers have a chance to grow into them and use them at will.

It is also a place where gods walk among the populace; only Martel believes at first they are more powerful espers such as the galaxy has never seen and the gods rule to keep from getting bored. Martel has the potential to become one of them but because he turns his back on them, both sides know a confrontation will eventually occur. A millennium has passed and Martel is viewed as a god by the people who worship him, he can control his powers which are greater than the so called gods and Kryn is now the Viceroy ruler of a galaxy. Martel does the impossible to get what he wants and if he is successful, for the first time in a thousand years, he will finally be happy.

THE HAMMER OF DARKNESS is a reprint of a book first published in 1985. Although the plot is not as fast-paced and exciting as the later works of L.E. Modesitt, Jr., it is evident by the storyline that he showed back then he was destined to be a highly regarded master storyteller. What hasn't changed in over two decades is his ability to create characters that are interesting and larger than life placed in a future setting.

5 out of 5 stars twilight of the gods.......2003-06-26

This book is not for everybody. The first time I read it I didn't like it. However, I picked it up again at a later time and read it again when my memories of my first reading had somewhat blurred. Somewhat to my own surprise I found that I really enjoyed the novel and I found much in it that I had missed when I first read it and have since read it more than twice.

Martin Martel is a rebel. He fell in love with the daughter of the ruler of his planet. For this crime, and also because he was found to have high esper potential, he was exiled to "the planet of the gods, " where for all intents and purposes he became one himself. However, Martel does not believe in "gods" no matter what fancy name or titles they use and he knows that he is human and is determined to live like one despite what the other "gods" and local mortals try to force him to acknowledge. He is a stubborn man beyond all reason at times and more powerful than anyone else realizes.

This book is almost abstract to read, it leaves a lot the to readers imagination, but it is also lyrical and almost poetical at times. It is my favorite book by this author. The story itself is an allegory of the fall of the gods of ancient Greece in a scifi setting, about the consequences of denying the truth of your own abilities and the risks people take in forcing action when some things are better left alone.

The individual qualities of this book my be blurred if you have read much of this authors later work as his writing style has in many ways remained remarkably unchanged, and he continually explores similar themes and hero-types, but for me, this the first book of this author that I read before he become well known will always remain my favorite.

            Book Description

Perhaps no other cook has played such a central role in the renaissance of traditional southern cooking as Edna Lewis. When asked who has influenced them most, chefs from New York to Little Washington to Charleston cite Ms. Lewis and her classic collection of recipes, In Pursuit of Flavor, first published in 1988.

Edna Lewis learned to cook by waHChing her mother prepare food in their kiHChen in a small farming community in Virginia. Because she was raised at a time when the vegetables came from the garden, fruit from the orchard, pickles, relishes, chutney, and jellies from quick canning, and meat from the smokehouse, Edna Lewis knows how food should taste. Every recipe included in her cookbook, both old friends and new discoveries, reflects her memory of and continuing search for good flavor.

In chapters devoted to fruits and vegetables, meat and fowl, fish, herbs and spices, bread, and other baked goods, Ms. Lewis shares her secrets for getting the best out of food: combining tomatoes with cymling squash, pumpkins with onion and bacon, cooking sweet potatoes with lemon, and boiling corn in its husk. She always keeps a bit of country ham around to perk up greens, cooks fish fillets or chicken breasts in parchment, and braises meat in a clay pot to keep it moist. Her baking recipes, for the griddle and the oven, include tips on the right flour to use, how to make your own baking powder (to avoid the chemical taste), how to listen for signs that a cake is done, and when to use frozen butter in a pie crust and when to use pure leaf lard. In Pursuit of Flavor brings generations of cooking wisdom to today's kitchen.

It is safe to say that this cookbook is like no other you will find unless it is another by this giant of a chef/instructor. The book is filled with information: how to purchase fish and duck, how to freeze berries-- there are two pages of information on Virginia hams; and, yes, there are recipes too exotic for my simple tastes. For example, I doubt that I'll ever prepare rabbit pate or roast and stuff a suckling pig. Miss Lewis' whiskey cake recipe is from another world, however. The cake is made in a tube pan and has a cup of bourbon in it--and tastes as if it does. (Miss Lewis says that you should never cook with any alcohol you wouldn't drink.) The cake comes out of the oven a beautiful pale yellow color, almost like salt-fired pottery. Dense and moist, it slices like a thick piece of fine cheese. I didn't believe the author when she says that you can listen to the sounds of a cake to know when it's done. I can testify that she is quite right about that. This is a really fine cake. There are lots of other breads and desserts I want to try.

            4 out of 5 stars A Very Colorful Cookbook.......2000-06-02

I had heard of Edna Lewis for many years, so was anxious to see what all the fuss was about. And I was only mildly disappointed. Like M.F.K. Fisher, she has an uncommon appreciation for food and a keen sensitivity to subtleties in flavor. Throughout her cookbook she speaks of preserving flavor, complementing it,& getting the best out of it; and stresses the importance of fresh, organic, high-quality food. In her introduction she says, "I feel fortunate to have been raised at a time when the vegetables from the garden, the fruit from the orchard, and the meat from the smokehouse were all good and pure, unadulterated by chemicals and long-life packaging. As a result, I believe I know how food should taste." And so naturally, by extension, she has alot of particularities and preferences for how she likes things: she prefers Madagascar vanilla to Tahitian, cinnamon from Ceylon, the fall crop of raspberries to the early summer crop, the basil plants with tiny leaves, home-made baking powder to store-bought (she includes the recipe), and she waxes rhapsodic on wild berries: "...but wild things never fail us. They always taste good, which is why if you see only a handful of wild nuts or a cupful of berries, you should pick them. They have a flavor nothing else has. If you transplant a wild plant to the garden it will never taste the same." Etc.,etc. Quite a few recipes are designed for specific, possibly obscure, types of fruits or vegetables-- green gage plums, explorer potatoes, cymling squash, lady apples, Keiffer pears, etc. In the case of the Damsom plum, wild persimmon, and wild strawberry recipes, she allows for substitution with the regular and cultivated versions, but warns that the results will taste different and not as good. She offers a diverse range of hints along the way-- from how to buy a good coconut, to how to learn to listen for the signs when a cake is done.

Edna Lewis is an old Virginian, raised in Freetown, a small farm community founded by her grandfather shortly after his emancipation from slavery. The narratives introducing each food chapter, and the comments that accompany each recipe, are reminiscences from her childhood and insights into southern sensibility, and they are delightful: " Summertime is just nothing without boiled corn on the cob. When I was younger, for dinner, corn would be a separate course, which we would eat after the main part of the meal when the dishes were cleared away. After all, you really can't eat anything else if you are concentrating on corn", and "In the South there's a big stir about how chess pie got its name. Some say it's because when a guest would say 'My, this a good pie, what is it called?' the answer would be 'jes pie'."

The disappointment for me, a near-vegetarian, was not only in the relative paucity of vegetable recipes, but in seeing how heavily she relies on meat in general-- not just as a course in itself, but as a means of deriving flavor in other dishes. She says,"I still use pork shoulder, country ham, bacon, and streak-of-lean to flavor many dishes", and," I wouldn't feel my kitchen was well-stocked if I did not have ham on hand to flavor dishes." A full third of the cookbook is devoted to meat, fish and game. And much of that is not necessarily your ordinary fare-- there are more recipes for rabbit, for instance, than for beef. And quite a bit of quail, pheasant, duck, guinea hen, etc. There's even head cheese, eel (including how to skin them), and squirrel. The squeamish may want to skip this section altogether. She also obtains flavor from the liberal use of fat. I was surprised by how many recipes, even vegetable ones, call for a stick of butter or a cup of heavy cream.

Still and all, this cookbook is a unique treat-- informative, inspiring, and just a pleasure to read. The tomato soup with basil, crispy cornsticks, creamed scallions, and summer berry pudding are all excellent. Of the latter she says, "When I made this for the James Beard Tribute Dinner in New York one year, Mayor Koch had five helpings." Next to try is the chocolate souffle, "one of the recipes for which I am best known."

5 out of 5 stars Fruits of Bali.......2003-10-23

Fruits of Bali is a beautifully designed field compass to the exotic nursery of tropical fruits that flourish on lush, bright-green, equatorial Bali. A jaunty introduction is bracketed by charming, nineteenth century antique prints of Bali's "most typical fruit, salak," and "the celebrated durian, most notorious of all Southeast Asian fruits." This preliminary background material acquaints the reader with Bali's small individual landholders-who plant a few native fruit trees in their house yards and wind up producing the stunning carnival of shapes, tastes, colors, and smells on display in the tri-weekly village markets. The authors enlighten Western visitors about communal fruit collectors (harvesters), village market day schedules, local fruit prices, and bargaining techniques, but "assume no responsibility for the reader being overcharged when buying a banana!"
Thirty-nine different Balinese fruits are spotlighted in informative, sugar-charged briefs complemented by brightly colored photo illustrations. The Eisemans tell us about each specie's historical and native origins (early Spanish missionaries thought the passion fruit's flower symbolically represented the crucifixion of Christ) plus a botanical description of its size and appearance. Fruit by fruit, we survey their distinctive varieties, flavors, and seasonal availability; how the Balinese eat them; where they grow on Bali; practical applications (caffier lime juice is also used to wash hair!); and medicinal properties (plus name translations between Balinese, Bahasa Indonesia, and Latin). Connoisseurs of fine fruit will love this look at delectable, rare produce largely unfamiliar to the Western palate and diet. Travelers currently on Bali graduate fully prepared to recognize and seek out the mouthwatering taste treats that surround them-from their hotel breakfast buffet table (of papaya, watermelon, and pineapple) to the flamboyant rambutan, breadfruit, pomegranate, and mangosteens that await their pleasure in the local markets.

5 out of 5 stars Fruits as religious offerings in the Isle of gods.......2000-06-18

Various kinds of tropical fruits grow well in Bali Island. And only the best quality ones are selected and made into beautifully arranged ornaments offered to the gods. It is such a spectacular sight to see Balinese women heading to the temples carrying these colorful fruits on their heads. Readers will agree with the author that only in Bali can one find this breathtaking ritual.

                      Book Description

Designing Celtic knotwork patterns can be as easy as drawing hearts, loops, and lines on a graph. Traditional knotwork has long been a favorite source for crafters of all kinds, but they’ve always had to rely on ready-made images. This handbook changes that, because it teaches the essential elements of construction so that anyone can plot borders, motifs, animal figures, and more.

5 out of 5 stars Simple techniques, beautiful results.......2002-08-01

In the "Celtic Knotwork Handbook" Sheila Sturrock invites the beginner into the adventure of designing and constructing beautiful Celtic knotwork patterns. Don't be fooled by the simple techniques explained in the book. By first teaching how to plot basic patterns on a graph paper, she teaches the student the basic patterns and designs. From these basic beginnings the student then learns how to leverage those skills to create larger more complex patterns.

In a matter of about an hour I was able to design and draw basic patterns easily. By the next day I could design and produce much more complex patterns and was quite pleased with the results. An enjoyable book that teaches one of the easiest methods to learn and create Celtic knotwork, it is a valuable reference as well as just plain fun.

5 out of 5 stars The Celtic Knotwork Handbook, a perfect book for beginers.......2002-07-10

If you are just getting started, or have been interested in knotwork for a while, this is a great book! It provides historical information, diagrams, how to make circular knots, anamorphics, and more than 100 original knots, which include corners, borders, and motifs. This is the best keltic knot book I've seen.

                      3 out of 5 stars I guess they're cutting publishing costs........2000-09-16

I went to the store a few days ago to take a look at this book before I decided to buy it. When I found it I was a bit dissappointed in what I saw. It looks like the same book she made in 1998. It even uses the exact same cover only this time it is brown. Don't get me wrong, that is a great book and I use it all the time, but this book was about 2 inches X 2 inches smaller. I personally prefer the larger version which is 7 1/4 inches by 9 3/4 inches. If you don't mind the smaller size, it has been a wonderful reference. I also love how they illustrate both the two-dimensional line drawing and the final three-dimensional drawing side by side.

4 out of 5 stars Celtic Knotwork Handbook.......2000-07-07

This book is an interesting beginning for those just starting out in celtic artwork. At first, the lack of detailed instructions is confusing, but once you get the hang of it, it is very simple. This book shows an interesting way of doing complicated knotwork.
