Book Description
Collected and restored to print at last, the hilarious, moving, lowlife sketches by a writer whose "phenomenal ear caught the common parlance of New York in all its uncommonness."-Phillip Lopate.
From 1937 until his death in 1956, John McNulty walked many beats for The New Yorker, but his favorite-and the one he made famous-was Tim and Joe Costello's, a bustling Irish saloon at Third Avenue and Forty-fourth Street. The place is gone now-it was leveled and replaced by the lobby of a skyscraper in 1973-but it and its hard-drinking mid-century patrons live on in these funny, poignant, immortal sketches and stories.
McNulty's people-cab drivers, horseplayers, glamour girls, draftees, has-beens, never-weres, dreamers and despairers-are drawn from life, and draw the breath of life. "What a marvelous writer McNulty was!" said Brendan Gill when they tore down Costello's. "His stories will survive...and perhaps seem all the more remarkable to a later generation for the reason that both the time and the place they celebrated have disappeared without a trace-brick and stone as thoroughly ground to dust as man."
There is a short shelf of American classics born in the talk of ordinary folk-Mark Twain's sketches, Ring Lardner's baseball yarns, Studs Terkel's Chicago, and Joseph Mitchell's reports from the waterfront. With This Place on Third Avenue, that shelf grows one book longer.
Customer Reviews:
You can tell a lad "The snake is out" but don't tell him "the elevens are up.".......2007-07-29
This wonderful collection of stories was published in 2001;but the stories themselves date back to the 40's in and around an Irish bar at Third Ave and 44th Street in New York. There is an excellent memoir written by his wife,Faith, that runs 30 pages and gives insights into her husband John. John was a writer of renown who wrote for newspapers, magazines and a well known writer for "The New Yorker".He died in 1956 at 64.
The stories,twenty-eight in all, took place in and around a bar ,and those who frequented it for a number of years.
In this world, everyone is a character, and every character has a story or trait that is there to see and write about,if one only has the powers of observation. There ar zillions of similar bars, not unlike this one, where these sorts of people and things are going on all the time,;and the people probably think there is nothing unusual about it at all.Well, maybe there isn't, it's just life around a bar ,pub,or whatever you want to call a local watering hole. What is unusual is the skill of someone like McNulty to observe and write about it.
Though a different cultural background or time period;I am reminded of a couple of New York expressions;
" Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."
and
" "You can see a lot by looking"
If you ever wondered what the expression "They're more Irish than the Irish";this little book will explain it to you.
Also if you thought "A Made Man " was an Italian expression, well think again.Maybe they got it from the Iris.
Then there are words like "gosson" and "omadhaun" sprinkled around;that I've never heard, are not in my Webster's;maybe what I need is an "Irish Street Dictionary".
The book is written is the simplest, descriptive language the Irish are so good at.This isn't the stuff of Joyce,Shaw,Beckett,or even Wilde;but more akin to Roddy Doyle,Frank McCourt and Brendan O'carroll so is relaxing reading.
The thing that surprises me most about this book is--Although McNulty was before my time and I had not heard of him before;I'm really surprised that I am the first to post a review on this book.
If you enjoy the way the Irish have with language, you'll find terrific
lines like this throughout.
"Those fellers would spend thousands of dollars if it wasn't for they haven't even a quarter.Only two nickles.Never mind why I done it."
"A guy like Grady, how you going to understand him without knowing him
first?"
and
"Nobody's going to tell me take it easy,I know what I'm doing,I know what I'm doing."
I certainly plan to read more of McNulty's great stories.
PS
I forgot to mention that John's wife Faith, was also a well known writer. As I read this book, little did I realize that I had read one of her books many years ago.She wrote mainly nature things for children and youth;but I have "The Whooping Crane" A fight against extintion, published in 1967 and it was a very important look at the Whooping Crane and very astute as well as ahead of its time in dealing with endangered species. She lived on a farm in Rhode Island and passed away in 2005.In some notes it is claimed that she and John bought the farm in 1960 and they both lived there. However in this book it is claimed John died in 1956 at 64.??? anyway she she outlived him by about 40 years. This book would have him born around 1892 and Faith was born in1918,making her 26 years his younger.
A further point of interest a "New Yorker" article credits John with "Nobody goes there anymore;it's too crowded" rather than Yogi Berra. Regardless, the quote is about as New York as you can get and both of these personalities were masters of it.
Book Description
For a conquered people, a long-forgotten magic holds their only hope.
Blue Isle's capital lies in ruins, leveled by the new invasion force of Fey. But to hold his conquest, Black King Rugad must capture his two half-Islander, half-Fey great-grandchildren: the fiery Arianna and the gentle Gift. For one of them will inherit the Black Throne, and Rugad will not rest until he owns them both, body and soul.
Yet, in the wily and courageous Arianna, this legendary warrior may have met his match. Fugitives in a wasted land, she and her father, Blue Isle's King Nicholas, plan the destruction of her ruthless great-grandfather. Drawn to a forgotten sacred place in the shimmering Cliffs of Blood, they will find Arianna's long-lost brother, Gift. But an old enmity stands between Arianna and the reluctant warrior Gift, and an ancient Fey prophecy darkens their future--and that of the world.
The brilliant epic of the Fey continues in a blaze of beauty and savagery, treachery and enchantment.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Rugad the Black King has been successful in his attack on the Blue Isle, but to ensure his total domination he still has to deal with his hybrid great grandchildren, Gift, and Arianna.
Arianna in particular, it seems, may harken back to some of her female ancestors in strength, and will likely be a big problem.
Incredible good........1999-12-04
This serie is getting better and better. What a twists and plotchangings. I'm really sorry for the Islanders in their struggle for survive. But I'm also intrigued by the Fey, despite their cruel warbehavior. One of the best series I've ever read.
Marking time.......1998-07-24
"The Resistance" lives up to the others in this series in terms of Rusch's world building and characterization, which remain consistently strong. However, this book gives the impression of being more of an interlude in the action, while characters move from Point A to Point B, than a vital part of the development of the story. It seems to simply be a set-up for the next book in the series. I've read many fantasy series, and I've rarely had the sensation that the author is just marking time until the next novel, but I get it here.
doesn't insult your intelligence.......1998-07-15
this is a wonderful series with engageing charachters and a fully realized world! bring on number 5
The clean-up.......1998-07-11
This book cleans up the series by tying together all of the loose ends that were hanging. Some more of the mysteries are solved, and more powers discovered. I am at a loss though as to why the animosity within the Royal family. It seems like the two children, particularly Gift, being raised by the Fey, could have known of his sibling's existance... Oh well, I guess that is why I am the reader, and not the author.

Going for Infinity is a wonderful, wide-ranging collection that aptly showcases one of the greatest writers of science fiction and fantasy.
This collection presents some of Anderson's best-known work, interspersed with his own comments on writing and selected memories of his six-decade career. It's a successful combination: Anderson's likeable, thoughtful persona and his powerful, precise fiction balance and enrich each other, bringing fresh context to both. Highlights include "The Saturn Game" with its characteristic blend of science, psychology, and beautiful prose; "The Problem of Pain," which offers a provocative redefinition of the concept of God; and "Goat Song," a chilling reworking of Greek myth.
Anderson (who died in 2001) was a graceful and deeply humanistic writer who used impeccable science and convincing fantasy to explore the complexities of love, death, sacrifice, necessity, and the wonder of the world. This collection is a must-have for his fans and a splendid introduction for readers new to his work. --Roz Genessee

Going For Infinity.......2005-09-15
very nice compilation of his stories.... mostly odd bits of ideas, but his writing is so charming they make for very nice reading
Science, philosophy, poetry.......2004-12-15
"Going for Infinity" contains eighteen stories by Poul Anderson, written over the course of a half-century. Fifty years is an immensely long time in the history of science fiction. It almost is the history of science fiction. In terms of literature, though, fifty years is nothing. Science fiction has hardly begun its life in human culture. No wonder, then, that it has changed so much since its birth, just like a baby does in its first few years. From mute and helpless infant, to crawler and communicator, to walker and talker.
Poul Anderson's writing covers in time most of the life of the genre of science fiction, but the stories in Going for Infinity range less widely in style and substance than the genre as a whole. Anderson says in the Introduction:
"What [Robert Gleason, my editor] had in mind [for this book] was not simply another collection, but a retrospective - besides stories, something about their origins, backgrounds, contexts, a historical overview of the science fiction and fantasy field throughout those decades."
Then Anderson immediately follows with:
"Of course, this isn't really possible. I have been only one writer among many, and how wonderfully diverse a lot they were and are! "
Anderson's own stories in this collection are largely the product of a fairly straightforward synergy of contemporary science (contemporary to the time of writing), and imagination. In introducing the first story, "The Saturn Game," published in 1981, he recounts his visit to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory a few years later "to witness Voyager One's flyby of this very planet." Anderson had also written another story set on the Saturnine moon Iapetus. Anderson wondered,
Would my speculation prove completely mistaken? It's a risk that science fiction always takes, a risk that in the long run becomes an inevitability. But would this piece of mine have any run of might-be-so at all?
This realism, this concern that a story fit the facts, characterizes most of Anderson's stories in "Going for Infinity." These are not William Gibson stories. Most of them are science fiction as a backdrop of unfamiliarity against which the ordinary - but lonely, sad, evil, good, beautiful - stands out in a new and exciting way, or maybe just a simpler, more obvious, less complicated way. Economics, democracy, religion - these are all examined anew under the strange light of an unfamiliar sun.
Another mark of Anderson's stories is the emphasis on the writing itself. He tells stories, but even more he paints images and composes music in language. Not just fantasy clichés of `purple mountains on the horizon', but lines crafted from a conscious and deliberate wielding of language and words and rhythm and space. This, I think, is the most satisfying element of Anderson's work here.
There is more to enjoy, though. Anderson introduces every story with comments on the story itself, or its inception, context, or repercussions. He mentions other writers, other times, other ideas. For Anderson fans, this will surely be welcomed.
Though this collection mostly is of a realistic style, there is some other more fantastic pieces mixed in. "Goat Song" is one of these. Published in 1972, this story was somehow influenced by another science fiction story, "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream," and Cocteau's film Orpheus. It seems appropriate that this story struck me as the most contemporary, regardless of publication date.
"Going for Infinity" is definitely a worthwhile collection to own, and Anderson's stories more than worth reading.
Homage to a grandmaster.......2002-06-08
GOING FOR INFINITY pays homage to one of the speculative fiction's greatest authors of the twentieth century by providing a taste of Poul Anderson's works as well as his retrospective thoughts over the six decades he wrote. The tales run the gamut of science fiction and fantasy with mystery thrown in showing how diverse a writer Mr. Anderson was. Some of the science fiction seems obsolete, but when looked from a historiographic perspective provides insight into the times the stories were written and into the mind of a creative individual. The fantasies and detective contributions hold up better as they clearly show Mr. Anderson's real talent of turning the obviously impossible into something that feels real and genuine; thus leaving the awed audience celebrating the classic works of a noteworthy renaissance writer.

The eye-catching animal cakes featured on the cover and back of PARTY ANIMAL CAKES may look difficult to make, but with Lindy Smith's step-by-step, color photo enhanced directions in hand, it's a piece of cake to produce them. A base cake round, fondant, and icing along with a cutting template are usually all that's needed, and sidebars of materials and equipment lists assure cooks have everything they need right at hand. These aren't quick productions nor are they for baking beginners, but cooks with some experience will find this takes them the next step from average to extraordinary cake-making. Parents will appreciate the kid-friendly animal themes.

Our daughter loves this book.......2007-09-13
Our daughter is 18 months old. This has been one of her favorite books for the last few months. She likes all of the books in the Otto series. The Otto books are filled with bright colors, silliness and a message at the end. The books generally start out with things not going Otto's way, but as Otto keeps trying, eventually things work out in the end. Anytime I find a book that captivates my daughter, I have to give it five stars.
Otto Rules.......2006-11-10
Our 20 month old daughter loves her Otto books. They are filled with cute illustrations and easy to follow stories, with good messages.
My daughter asks for this book repeatedly.......2006-08-21
My 2 1/2 year old daughter loves this book. She laughs at all of the strange things (two shoes, a cootie bug) that Otto puts in his birthday cake. Lately, I've been buying her mostly books with longer stories than this so I would probably recommend this for a 2 year old or older chiildren who don't like long books.

How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend, an informal, friendly guide by The Monks of New Skete, is really two books in one: a step-by-step training manual and a philosophical discussion of the spiritual benefits of owning a dog. The Monks, who support their community in upstate New York by breeding and training German shepherds, reveal a profound devotion to all breeds in this detailed guide to every imaginable aspect of dog ownership. They cover it all: naming the puppy, training with eye contact and jingling keys, establishing the best sleeping arrangements, even dealing with pet loneliness. Owners are advised to think of themselves as the dog's alpha figure, to train with praise instead of punishment, and to beware of becoming the dog's maid or doorman. Throughout, the authors reflect on the deep spiritual connection possible between humans and dogs. Generations of dogs have been trained with the bestselling 1978 edition of this book. With this update, the Monks are bound to gain many new fans--happy humans and obedient canines alike. When you've got enough time on your hand..........2007-09-04
Who better than a bunch of rural New England living monks to spend their days raising German Shepards and writing about it... Between living the monastic life (young pups tethered to their frocks), these monks raise, breed and train dogs... and have written a book (this) which is considered by many the definitive dog owners guide... and when it comes to straightforward, in-depth non-gimmicky practicality... this manual may very well live up to its reputation... and quite worldly and dog centered with the exception on their philosophy of discipline... and this is why I only give it four stars... not that I agree or disagree, but its important to realize that their method is neither RADICAL, nor exactly modern... Basically if you've been reading most of the newer books you're told "Never punish a puppy..." in contrast, the Monk's go into quite a bit of detail on how to get yours to yelp should he try to pull certain offenses... Included are maneuvers which the monks describe as more drama than violence, but definitely are corporal punishment... with those controversial ALPHA ROLLS for toppers... and this is where I have a problem: I would really like to see the average non-professional dog trainer little old lady try to slap then alpha roll a large breed dog with an aggression problem and see what happens (a face full of stitches perhaps?) If such maneuvers are meant as a LAST RESORT, wouldn't that mean that the dog may very well need to be handled by a professional with a bit more experience... Trust me... I can't even play with my toy poodle without now and then having my nose chewed on... wrestling Rottweilers... forget it. - - I hope atleast one person agrees with me that even if this type of discipline is appropriate to get the dog to submit, it should not be done by someone unless they really know what they're doing... and even if not abusive when PROPERLY ADMINISTERED can be traumatic if not dangerous to the handler and dog if IMPROPERLY done. (I will admit though, the setting the dog up not to chase cars trick does sound rather fun!)
That said, this book is chock full of advice... not mere obedience but everything including very sensible advice many books miss out on... For example, the Monk's plead for a lifestyle that keeps the dog active, occupied and socialized, not merely disciplined and tied up in a yard...
and they go into the specifics how, even offering advice on how to make toys and sports good for both city and country. - - They also have a rather interesting trick they use with keys (similar to clicker training.)
My end advice... get it, but also read other books for balance... nonetheless, get it before you get your pup...
Absolutely Essential!.......2007-08-31
My own dog's trainer does not approve of the Monks, but in my world there is plenty of room for difference of opinion!
The Monks' book is valuable no matter what method you eventually settle on as a good fit for your temperament and your dog's needs, because the Monks' advice is about so much more than training methods: it is about a lifestyle and outlook, and dedication to your dog as a member of the family, with needs very different from those of the human members. It is that sense of confidence and kind authority, without being stern or strict, that makes training work- not the style of training itself. This book helps you achieve that state, which gives your dog the restful assurance that Master or Mistress is in charge, so he can relax and do his best at being your dog.
Great Training Manual.......2007-08-28
I got this because of my border collie. I am very glad I got this book. It was hard to choose which book to get since there are so many out there. I researched many books before deciding on this one. If you want to train your dog, buy this book!
How to be your Dog's Best Friend.......2007-08-28
When we adopted our black lab/shepard mix we sent for a copy of this book and felt that we successfully trained our dog using the monks' methods. Then our daughter (a school teacher) just got a purebred yellow lab so we obtained this particular copy of the book for her to use. She and her husband have read the book and using their methods of training. We and they are very happy with the results of the training of our dogs.
Your dog is a dog and not a human.......2007-08-14
Most other books about dogtraining have prettier pictures, and simpler advice. However, this book gives really exhaustive advice on how to train your dog in a way the dog understands and accepts. I also think that many other books about dogs anthropomizes the dogs. This one doesn't, it all the times reminds the reader that a dog is a dog (and 100% genetically wolf), and all the training is based on that fact. It is not denigrating to the dogs, rather it focuses on the dogs feelings and point of view, so, rather, it is more respectful of the dog.
There are some caveats with this book though: these guys raise big dogs, so, naturally, their advice works best with big, and more powerful dogs - like labradors. Secondly, this book does not really focus on puppies, so you might want a comeplementary book which deals with the art of raising puppies.

The follow-up to Perry's highly successful Impressionist Quilts, this volume takes the unique method a step further, offering expanded discussion of color imagery and venturing beyond strictly floral compositions into landscapes and seascapes as well. Additional techniques (patch appliqué and highlight painting), step-by-step instructions for six new projects, and extensive exploration of color, fabric, and design principles make this book an important complement to the first volume. --Amy Handy

Imprssionist Palette: Ouiltcolor & design by Gai Perry.......2001-07-30
This is the best. It takes your breath away how Gai can come up with all these gorgeous inspirational quilts. The book is very easy to understand and English is my second language. She explains it in very simple terms. Your hands will itch to get started. It is like painting with fabric. Start collecting lots of fabric and she teaches you what to look for. You will never look at fabric the same way again. I also like to recoment her 'Color from the Heart' book. You learn so much that you use these books over and over again. Her books are real treasures.
The Greatest book of all.......2000-06-11
This is the most marvelous book I have ever seen about impressionist or watercolor quilts, Gai did realy a great job with this book. It gives you lots of ideas to go on and make some beautiful Impressionist quilts of your own. I love all her books, and hope she write lots of more in the future, certainly about this type of quilts.
Great for Imaginative Quilters.......2000-01-17
This is a truly wonderful book for the quilter who wants to create art, to go beyond traditional approaches. Ms. Perry's quilts are inspiring -- I went out and chose my fabrics for a new project the day after I got this book. She emphasizes the importance of putting certain colors and prints together to create marvelous impressionistic effects on a quilt top. The pictures of completed quilts are incredible, the writing instructional and clear, and the suggested projects are exciting and fun to make.
Impressionist Palette is a superb manual for watercolour........1998-04-06
Of the many books currently available on watercolour quilting, Impressionist Palette is, in my opinion, the best. The pictures are absolutely stunning; the quilts exquisite. Apart from being an art book, the instructions on the technique of watercolour quilting are extremely clear and well-written, making it possible for myself, a fearful watercolourist, to attempt and succeed in making a watercolour quilt.

Book Description
Juan Pablo Montoya is the most exciting driver to hit Formula 1 since Michael Schumacher, and seemingly the one most likely to challenge the five-times World Champion. Astonishingly, Montoya's life has not been set out in detail - until now. Ace biographer Christopher Hilton charts Montoya's full race career, giving a penetrating insight into his F1 debut with Williams and the consolidation of 2002 which took him to the threshold of superstardom.

MONTOYA: MASTER OF CLASSIC ELEGANCE.......2002-09-07
This masterful book is one of the very best design books out today. the fabulous photos give richly detailed images of how the mind of Montoya turns dreams into reality. Colorfully planned rooms evoke reverence for things past and present. Montoya's use of religious references inform us of his link with humanity. Indirect lighting mixed with many different kinds of stone, granite, marbles and limestone create theatrical yet uplifing interiors that make beckon us to linger. Always sensitive to his clients' desires and wishes, he incorporates scale, harmony and balance while implementing function with style. Montoya is a master of surprise, you'll go back to this collection of his work time and again.
Design excellence captured in print........1998-11-25
This 400 page pictorial of Juan Montoya's work, past and present, is an engaging look at the designer's commitment to creating living spaces with flair, refinement, and cultural aesthetic.
Juan Montoya reveals the inspirations for his designs - both furniture and interior design - coming from a broad range of technology; to foreign cultural artifacts that are used to enrich and enhance spaces.
The spaces he creates are magnificent - a miriad of textures and colors that blend harmoniously into a defined living space - which the self titled book reveals quite well. Large color images enable you to study subtle details of the various rooms. This book also gives you a certain time line of his experience and influences during recent decades. Much of the text is reprinted from Architectural Digest, among other periodicals and books. Not to miss is the spread that displays the custom furniture designs that have been created, and used in various client's residences and office spaces.
This is a great addition to anyone's design collection. Definately a keeper, as well as a great design resource.
