Book Description

In seventeenth-century Valladolid, Spain’s new capital, Miguel Cervantes is busy writing his comic masterpiece, Don Quixote, which is being issued in installments. It is quickly making him the most popular author in the country, when three potential disasters strike: Cervantes discovers that there is a real Don Quixote, just like the character he thought he’d invented; a jealous poet concocts a scheme involving one of the novel’s other characters to make Cervantes a laughingstock; and Cervantes falls in love with a beautiful, widowed, but un-available duchess. Many duels, misunderstandings, politicking, and betrayals later, Don Quixote himself comes to Cervantes’ rescue.

This sparkling tale of crazed knights, thwarted love, and literary rivalry is set against the back-ground of a mighty empire suffering from a century of reckless wars and a ruling hierarchy stultified by patronage and ritual. Peopled with an engagingly idiosyncratic cast that ranges from a Machiavellian duke to a misanthropic poacher, this charming story is imbued with the spirit, verve, and humor of the great novel to which it pays playful tribute. Tilting at Windmills is a dazzling evocation of Cervantes’ life and times, and a brilliant weave of fact, fiction, and farce.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Strong Debut.......2007-08-09

I am definitely impressed with Branston's first foray into fiction. I picked this book up at a used book store simply because of the cover. Is this a bad way to choose books? Of course. Regardless of how you come across the story, it works on many, many levels.

Branston's style is engaging and entertaining. I wish I could tell you what was so funny about it, but I fear I could not do this tale justice. I laughed out loud at several junctures. The book starts off strong, drags for about 50 pages or so, and then takes off like a rocket towards high comedy.

Whether you're a fan of Cervantes and Don Quixote or not, this is definitely a book worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars A uniquely crafted original.......2006-04-23

Not since Cervantes' original (of which I've been a fan since my teens), has a book captured the essence of Don Quixote de la Mancha as this one. It has also re-captured the spirit of the eccentric soul as well. Richly and originally written, it is by no means pedantic, but a joy to read. This wonderful novel will stretch the imagination and hopefully make the term "Quixotic" part of the vernacular; possibly recruiting a new legion of Cervantes fans. It has certainly inspired me to re-read the original.

5 out of 5 stars A true 5 stars.......2005-03-29

Some books put you to sleep, other ones awaken your most creative thoughts and visions.
I love books like this one that can show me things in a new, unpredictable way. Books that make me think and treat me with respect with their intelligent nature.
This novel is much more than just a "story". It is history, in its own way. And even with its ambitious aim of offering a new interpretation of such great characters, it never lets you down. It never disappoints you. Amusing and poetical, sometimes sad but always light in its wonderful truthful tone full of colors and music.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2005-03-08

This book is like a finely woven textile of Julian Branston's poetic outlook; that of a writer who follows the literary of the Old Masters. Every scene and situation in this incredible story is crafted with feeling and filled with joy, so that the reader right from the beginning doesn't want to put the book down. One of those books that I will re-read many times.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book!.......2005-03-08

This is a wonderful book, in so many respects. Even before I was drawn into the plot, I was struck by the beautiful language. Elegant, poetic, refined throughout. (Senor Cervantes must be very pleased with Mr Branston's work!) And then, I felt magically transported into 17th century Spain. The book is a dazzling evocation of Cervantes' life and times, a brilliant weave of facts, fiction and farce. One by one, I was introduced to finely portrayed characters, Cervantes himself, the Old Knight, the Duchess, among others. Then there's the incredible sense of humour. Sometimes it's just a little tickle in the background, at other times, I felt like I was in the middle of some 17th century Laurel and Hardy routine. Branston gives us complete mayhem, utter slapstick, in the most deadpan, elegant language possible. Madly funny. It's so deadpan, it's wonderful. But that's not all. A few moments later, Branston moves into a very different direction. There are delicate studies of interiors, of gardens, there are deeply touching psychological observations. Hilarious at times, deeply touching at other times. It feels as though Cervantes is alive again. And it all ends with a most unexpected twist. I loved it.

I bought this for the a friend of mine for her b-day and it came quickly and in great shape and it was appreciated.

4 out of 5 stars The White Queen has a history.......2007-04-02

"Emma Frost: Higher Learning" is a digest-sized collection of the soap opera that was young Emma's life, long before she became the White Queen, a busty telepath, member of the Hellfire Club and frequent bane and occasional ally to the X-Men. Raised in extreme wealth by a selfish, domineering father and a largely vacant mother, Emma and her problematic siblings never had a normal life. A lack of friends at her private academy made life even worse. But then Emma started suffering headaches and nosebleeds, and she seemed to know what people around her were thinking....

"Higher Learning" is geared more toward a young-adult audience and will likely appeal more to young women than men. Still, it's an interesting story that adds new dimensions to an otherwise stale character. Karl Bollers' richly layered storytelling and Randy Green's solid art make for an attractive package that any comics reader can enjoy.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful prequel.......2006-11-20

I loved this Emma Frost series, which showed us her teen years as she was beginning to learn about her powers, up through her college years, as she begins to learn how to control her abilities.

A must read for any Emma Frost fan!

    4 out of 5 stars A disturbing background on a fascinating character.......2005-06-30

Emma Frost, the White Queen has intrigued readers since she first appeared in X-Men. Strong, confident, and beautiful, she used her telepathy to get what she wanted. But it wasn't always so.

This graphic takes us back to the time Emma was a shy, brown haired, frumpy, flat chested school girl, full of fear and insecurity, with a horribly controlling family. Just how controlling that family is, in particular, her father, is revealed over the course of the graphic. The family bickering, backstabbing, and betrayal is worse than any `80's soap opera. As Emma gains her mental powers and confidence, it will be all she can do to survive.

Higher Learning collects Emma Frost #1-6 in digest form, and is perfect for teen readers. The writing is solid and the art is pretty decent. Some of the content makes it more suitable for older teens instead of younger ones, however. Because this book isn't mired in continuity, it can easily be enjoyed by long time comic readers or newcomers.

    Recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2005-03-17

This is a really cool book for both boys and girls. The girls wil be able to relate and feel sorry for Emma as they are reading her backstory. The boys ( like myself) will read it because its so cool to see Emma Frost as a teenager, and i really wanted to know about her backstory.

This book does a great job showing readers Emma's early years. it shows her in high school, her family issues, and her first love.

The book plays out like a soap opera and it works out really well for this book, it has surprises and again its just really cool to see Emma as a kid.

The fourth volume in David G. Hartwell's ongoing Year's Best SF anthology series is something of a departure from his previous efforts. This time around, Hartwell has made a conscious decision to seek out great stories from unexpected places, a move that has paid off handsomely. For instance, several of the stories here are from the British SF magazine Interzone (one is a translation of a French piece that first appeared in Galaxies 4), and he has even taken a story from the pages of Popular Science. As usual, however, all of his selections have two things in common: they are all unquestionably works of "science fiction" (which is to say, they do not cross over into other genres such as horror or fantasy), and they are all of excellent quality.

Probably the crown jewel of this book is the most talked-about story of 1998, Ted Chiang's "The Story of Your Life." This is only Chiang's fourth story, but he has already earned an impressive number of awards for his work, including the Nebula Award and the J. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. Michael Swanwick's piece "Radiant Doors"--which plays off C.M. Kornbluth's classic story "The Marching Morons"-- is also a standout, as is Alexander Jablokov's "Minority Report." In fact, most of these stories are impressive in one way or another, although--as with any collection--some succeed better than others. Overall, this is probably the most representative "Year's Best" collection to appear in recent memory, and it's a shame that Hartwell is limiting himself to just one volume per year. --Craig E. Engler

4 out of 5 stars Solid anthology of recent short SF.......1999-07-14

I'd rate this one "good" though not "excellent". Several fine stories, a lot of OK ones, a couple of clunkers.

          High points:

"Maneki Neko", by Bruce Sterling. I enjoy Sterling's novels, but sometimes I wish he'd just write short stories... he's that good. This one, about a world where informal Net networks are starting to dominate our behavior, is excellent.

"Story of Your Life", by Ted Chiang. One of the best stories I've ever read about communicating with aliens, combined with a heartbreakingly poignant tale of human loss.

"Rules of Engagement", by Michael Flynn. I'm not a big military SF fan, but this was a good little combat story with an unusual point, set in what's obviously a well-worked out future.

"That Thing Over There", by Dominic Green. Definitely the best treatment of the yeti/Abominable Snowman legend that I've ever read. And it makes it very clear just what was so abominable about them...

"The Radiant Doors", by Michael Swanwick. A deeply creepy story about time-travelling refugees from an unspeakable future. Swanwick does an excellent job of depicting horror by glimpses.

(Unfortunately, this otherwise excellent story is marred by a stupid ending; as in much of his work, Swanwick sacrifices logic for effect. Still, worth reading for its unpleasant answer to the "leisure question" -- what will we do when the machines are doing all the work for us?

"A Dance to Strange Musics", by Gregory Benford. Typical Benford, with utterly forgettable characters and large blocks of explication (will Benford ever learn how to tell us stuff without making it really obvious that he's Telling Us Stuff?). But I still enjoyed this, perhaps because it managed to compress most of the content on one of Benford's rather flabby novels into a mere 35 pages or so. I disagree with the story's main idea -- I don't think that humanity would be awed and moved by meeting a superior intelligence that doesn't actually *do* much of anything -- but it's still a good read, with some really novel worldbuilding.

          Low points:

"The Year of the Mouse", by Norman Spinrad. Someday, someone will manage to explain to me why Spinrad is supposed to be a major voice in our field. Anyhow, you can skip this story, a silly wish-fulfillment fantasy about Disney taking on

"The Allies", by Michael Geston. Overlong and clunky ecological morality tale. Geston has been writing SF since the 1960s, but this reads like a novice effort. Avoid.

"The Twelfth Album", by Stephen Baxter. An Alternate History (AH) story about the Beatles. Of interest only to hardcore Beatles fans.

"Near Enough to Home", by Michael Skeet. Another AH story, about Canada. Not that bad, but not remotely worth including in the "year's best" IMO. It's hard to write a really interesting AH story, to be sure...

"Life in the Extreme", by David Brin. Very minor piece about the earliest days of Uplift. Not bad, but disappointing -- if it wasn't Brin, one doubts whether this would have been in here. Another answer to the leisure question.

Final point: Hartwell doesn't seem to have arranged these stories in any order, at all. I mean, the first story is Alexander Jablokov's rather lackluster "Market Report". I would have put a shorter, more kick-butt story up front ("Rules of Engagement", say, or Sterling's "Maneki Neko") in order to draw the reader in and get some momentum going.

Still, a decent anthology with some very good stuff; worth a look.

5 out of 5 stars No ifs ands or buts, the best of the year........1999-07-05

Once again, Hartwell has delivered one of the best anthologies of the year. With only one exception (Unraveling the Thread), all the stories in this volume are pure sf. And each story is great. Hartwell has selected stories from all over the globe. The US, Canada, Britain, and France are all represented. From novellas like "The Allies" and "Story of Your Life," to shorts like "State of Nature," there is something here for everybody. The best stories in the volume are "The Day Before They Came" by Mary Soon Lee, "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang, "Whiptail" by Robert Reed, "The Allies" by Mark S. Geston, "State of Nature" by Nancy Kress, and "Maneki Neko" by Bruce Sterling. One step down includes "This Side of Indepence," "Radiant Doors," "My Pal Clunky," and "A Game of Consequences." But as I said, all the stories here are good. Try them out. You won't be disappointed.

The Mekong region, which extends south from China through Laos and Thailand to Cambodia and Vietnam, offers extraordinary food. Hot Sour Salty Sweet, which takes its name from the principal taste sensations of the region's cooking, provides an unparalleled culinary journey through this fertile land. Though the book contains a wealth of anecdotal material, its great strength lies in its 175 recipes, explicit formulas for the likes of Shrimp in Hot Lime Leaf Broth, Lao Yellow Rice and Duck, and Hui Beef Stew with Chick Peas and Anise. The breadth and substance of this authentic yet approachable collection is truly exciting; readers who cook from the book (not difficult to do once ingredients are assembled and techniques understood), as well as those searching for the best kind of armchair travel, will be delighted.

Beginning with a discussion of the Mekong region, its people (a complicated mix, among them the Kai, Akha, and Cham), and their characteristic foods, the book then provides recipes organized by ingredients, dish types, and topics such as "Everyday Dependable," "One-Dish Meals," "Kids Like It," and "Vegetarian Options." This latter style of division helps define and "domesticate" a vast array of cooking, often enjoyed at times and places foreign to Westerners. Chapters devoted to such sweets as Tapioca and Corn Pudding with Coconut Cream, grilled specialties, and fare for adventurous cooks, such as Aromatic Steamed Fish Curry (more painstaking technically, though not truly difficult) further widen the book's scope. Illustrated throughout with 150 color photos and containing a comprehensive ingredient glossary, the book is a definitive point of entry to a mostly unexplored culinary port of call. --Arthur Boehm

            Book Description

Luminous at dawn and dusk, the Mekong is a river road, a vibrant artery that defines a vast and fascinating region. Here, along the world's tenth largest river, which rises in Tibet and joins the sea in Vietnam, traditions mingle and exquisite food prevails.

Award-winning authors Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid followed the river south, as it flows through the mountain gorges of southern China, to Burma and into Laos and Thailand. For a while the right bank of the river is in Thailand, but then it becomes solely Lao on its way to Cambodia. Only after three thousand miles does it finally enter Vietnam and then the South China Sea.

It was during their travels that Alford and Duguid—who ate traditional foods in villages and small towns and learned techniques and ingredients from cooks and market vendors—came to realize that the local cuisines, like those of the Mediterranean, share a distinctive culinary approach: Each cuisine balances, with grace and style, the regional flavor quartet of hot, sour, salty, and sweet. This book, aptly titled, is the result of their journeys.

Like Alford and Duguid's two previous works, Flatbreads and Flavors ("a certifiable publishing event" —Vogue) and Seductions of Rice ("simply stunning"—The New York Times), this book is a glorious combination of travel and taste, presenting enticing recipes in "an odyssey rich in travel anecdote" (National Geographic Traveler).

The book's more than 175 recipes for spicy salsas, welcoming soups, grilled meat salads, and exotic desserts are accompanied by evocative stories about places and people. The recipes and stories are gorgeously illustrated throughout with more than 150 full-color food and travel photographs.

In each chapter, from Salsas to Street Foods, Noodles to Desserts, dishes from different cuisines within the region appear side by side: A hearty Lao chicken soup is next to a Vietnamese ginger-chicken soup; a Thai vegetable stir-fry comes after spicy stir-fried potatoes from southwest China.

The book invites a flexible approach to cooking and eating, for dishes from different places can be happily served and eaten together: Thai Grilled Chicken with Hot and Sweet Dipping Sauce pairs beautifully with Vietnamese Green Papaya Salad and Lao sticky rice.

North Americans have come to love Southeast Asian food for its bright, fresh flavors. But beyond the dishes themselves, one of the most attractive aspects of Southeast Asian food is the life that surrounds it. In Southeast Asia, people eat for joy. The palate is wildly eclectic, proudly unrestrained. In Hot, Sour, Salty, Sweet, at last this great culinary region is celebrated with all the passion, color, and life that it deserves.

            5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-08-17

This was given to me by a good friend. I love to cook, and over the years have struggled with South East asian, Thai in particular, cooking. But this book lays it all out in such a way, and has such clear instructions that, in combination with an asian grocery store, it is foolproof. As a bonus, the travelogues and side bars are wonderfully interesting. Even if you don't cook, you will be taken away on a wonderful culinary journey through the region.

3 out of 5 stars Some issues with book.......2006-07-12

Pondering on whether to return book or not. Purchased for Cambodian recipes, having a hard time finding a Cambodian cookbook, this was the best bet = and it does have dishes for things we ate like Khmer soup, pumpkin curry and a similar version to Amok. (oddly i have the amok recipe in my New York Cookbook, a favorite standby)

But as an avid photographer and traveler and cookbook collector, i have to say the travel writing is amateurish, the photos are not great (a mini picture of Angkor wat and i don't think i saw many pictures of places i'd been to in thailand or vietnam - just street scenes - what kind of travelogue is this?) and never seem to match the right page (you would think there would be a photo of what you are reading about next to it) and the pictures of dishes are far and few between. For the huge irregular book format of the book there are not that many recipes. Compare for example "the Cook's Book" for the same heft has 685 recipes.. Compare with Nobu Now for the difference in food photography capability..

if many of these reviews didn't say the recipes are good they are part of daily repetoire, i'm tempted to return. it really is way to big for the content inside.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Coffee Table Book. Good recipes, but expensive.......2005-12-31

`Hot Sour Salty Sweet' by husband and wife team, Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid is a troublesome book to evaluate. Its biggest problem is its relatively high list price ($45) for no more than average culinary content. Much of that inflated price is based on its oversized heft and the fact that it mixes cooking content with comments on culinary regionalism and pure travelogue in text and pictures.

I confess that this is a very attractive book, very similar in appearance to their later volume, `Home Baking' that I enjoyed and very favorably reviewed. And, since the authors have just come out with a new book with similar heft, price, and subject, I figured it was time to attend to reviewing this volume.

Aside from the price, I have one major problem with this book. While its focus is the culinary world of Southeast Asia, the text is far more anecdotal and personal than it is analytical. After reviewing many excellent books on the regional cooking of France, Italy, and other parts of the Mediterranean, I really find this book very thin on substance. Part of the problem for me may be that it tries to cover far too great an area. In 324 pages of material, they cover Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Yunnan Province of China. Thailand alone has required a 675 page book (`Thai Food') from David Thompson. And, on the ingredients of Asia, you can get a far more comprehensive coverage in Bruce Cost's classic `Asian Ingredients'.

In contrast, the books on Italy's regions all include great insights on the origins of culinary mores in these relatively small venues. And, while Arthur Schwartz' book on Naples may include 50 detailed recipes for pasta in Campania, this book gives but 10 for a much larger region. On the other hand, I give the authors extra credit for providing a recipe for fresh, homemade rice noodles. You may have a bit of a problem wrangling this big book around your kitchen and making a decent photocopy of the oversized page, but it is still a good recipe.

If you have no interest whatsoever in acquiring any OTHER books on Southeast Asian cuisine and you have the budget for it, this is a very nice book. I just think that if you are serious about learning about food, you look for books with greater depth and less fluff.

I find it very interesting that none of the blurbs on the back of the book refer to this volume and none are from culinary notables. All refer to the authors' earlier book on flatbreads and most come from general publications such as `The New York Times' and `The Globe and Mail'.

I can really appreciate all the nice things other reviewers have said about this book, as I was impressed with it when I first looked at it 300 cookbook recipes ago. Since then, I find it just a bit too light for the price.

Recommended as a good coffee table book. Look for it at a steep discount!

5 out of 5 stars This literary and culinary triumph is a ticket to SE Asia........2005-06-20

Of the dozen cookbooks I own, this remains my favorite. Mr. Alfrod and Mrs. Duguid bring the sights, sounds and smells of the Mekong river alive with excellent prose, assisted by photos from their travels. I have made about half the recipes in this book, and they are excellent. As the authors mention, their children love it, and I can believe it. Some ingredients and techniques are unusual, but the detailed instructions and indexes make it easy to get into SE Asian cooking. Some days I end up reading a few dozen pages when a just meant to pick a simple recipe. It is as delicious to enjoy in the study as in the dinning room!

5 out of 5 stars Like Southeast Asian Food? Get this book!.......2005-06-18

I have been cooking food from Southeast Asia for over 15 years, so I have quite a cookbook collection. I must say that this is one of the best books on the subject that I own. They got it right in the title: hot, sour, salty, sweet---the combination of flavors used all over Southeast Asia. Great information for beginner or seasoned cook. And, wonderful, authentic recipes to boo! A must have for anyone interested in cooking food from this area of the world. ---Rev. Jeff, www.revjeff.com

            5 out of 5 stars Healthy inspiration.......2004-07-25

This collaboration by food writer, Page, cardiovascular specialist, Schroeder, M.D., and dietician Dickson, is simple: keep saturated fat to 25 grams per day and all fat to 75 or less.

The first half of the book describes the plan, and the reasoning behind it and offers quizzes and tables evaluating foods and lifestyle habits.

The system depends on what the authors call 'Fat Tracking,' becoming aware of fats and saturated fats in all the foods we eat. Numerous lists offer alternatives to high-fat foods (i.e., whole grain bread instead of croissant, Canadian bacon instead of regular, angelfood cake instead of donut. They explain the vital differences between oils and how to read labels in supermarkets, choose cuts of meat, and find high-fiber foods.

The second half consists of recipes from breakfast through dessert, with tips for preparation, variations and storage and nutrition information. Recipes include unusual dishes like Eggplant Caviar, Melon and Cucumber Soup, Corn and Polenta Souffle With Cilantro Cream; fat-reduced favorites like Lasagne, various pizzas, and Pork Roast With Prunes; and variations on traditional themes like Grilled Halibut with Tomato Salsa, London Broil Teriyaki, and Walnut Brownies, made with apple sauce and cocoa.

An excellent and informative program for good, healthy eating.

101 Bears to Make is an all-inclusive resource for crafting the "perfect teddy bear;" it is the only book a bear maker will ever need. Author and bear artist, Nancy Tillberg, reveals the helpful tips and creative techniques behind her original one-of-a-kind masterpieces, providing traditionally hard-to-find information, such as how to craft open-mouthed bears, sculpt teeth, create fur, make double-jointed necks, and use trapunto and silk ribbon embroidered paw pads.

Step-by-step directions for three all-new patterns--one for a traditional teddy bear, another for a modern teddy bear, and a third for a realistic bruin--are accompanied by comprehensive information on altering the patterns, dyeing the fur, airbrushing, and scissor and soft sculpting. For inspiration, readers can refer to the gallery of bears sculpted by international designers.

            * Directions for altering three very different patterns focus on creativity and originality * Special projects include a purse that can be easily crafted from the three original patterns * Contains the most up-to-date techniques as well as the basic principals of bear making

Teddy bear devotees can tell you that each bear has its very own personality, and this is certainly evident in Carol-Lynn Rössel Waugh's Bearmaking 101. Her book, the author declares, is a realm "in which teddy bears pass through dimensional barriers between ordinary reality and imagination to take up residence in the hearts and minds of unsuspecting humans." Waugh establishes an alternate world of unique bear characters, and through this framework the bears themselves guide us on a journey of discovery, helping the author to teach us to create easy single-pattern-piece bears, multi-jointed and gusseted bears, marionette bears, hand puppet bears, and tiny teddies. She supplies superbly detailed instructions and complete patterns for the 12 projects, plus extensive coverage of basics like fabric choices, supplies, stitching tips, and jointing directions. This engaging introduction to creating wonderful teddy bears is specific enough for first-timers, yet imaginative enough to serve more experienced bear makers. --Amy Handy

Instructions are easy using both inches and millimeters. She illustrates sizes with phrases such as "using the size of a U.S. nickel". Pictures are brilliant. Book Description

John E. Owens (1823-1886), one of the wealthiest, most popular comic actors in America, refined the stage yankee and won critical and popular acclaim for his eccentric characters and tender, evocative portrayals of garrulous old men. His most famous role was Solon Shingle in J.S. Jones' The People's Lawyer, which he played over 2000 times, earning over $250,000 from it alone. As a manager, Owens had an eye for a hit, and he produced, directed, and performed in several of the nation's most successful productions of the 1850s and 1860s.

This biography chronicles his childhood and apprenticeship with William Burton, his early lead roles, his first efforts at management, and his marriage to Mary C. Stevens. It then discusses how he developed the roles of Solon Shingle and Caleb Plummer that brought him so much fame, the broadening of his audience and refining of his craft around the time of the Civil War, his performances in the West and expansion of his repertoire, his new ways of touring, and the loss and recovery of his audiences amid the rise of Joseph Jefferson. It ends with a discussion of his theatrical success, financial loss and exhaustion with acting and managing, and his illness and death.
