The Time Is Out of Joint presents an examination of Shakespeare's distinctly modern confrontation with time and temporality, the difference between the truth of the fact, that of theory, and that of interpretation and revelatory truth, and finds that Shakespeare anticipated post-metaphysical philosophy and its central concerns at a time when modern metaphysics had not yet reached it speak. Not up to par.......2006-07-26
Taken on its own, this might be a decent "young adult" novel, but as an offshoot of Mercedes Lackey's SERRAted Edge and Bedlam's Bard books, this and the sequel are not even close to where they should be. Considering the author collaborated with Misty on some of the earlier books, he really should have done his research when writing these. Things that are simple facts in Lackey's world are not even present here. For example, humans are NOT cross-fertile with elves without drastic measures. This is a point of tension in some of her later books, in fact. Also, elves do NOT have children easily, which is why they get involved in child abuse cases in Lackey's books! In Spiritride, the sequel to Elvendude, Shepherd has elves cross-breeding into an ancient Indian tribe, and states a bit later that elves could control when they conceived. Obviously, both of these elements are direct contradictions of Lackey's stories. And those are only two of the most flagrant errors; I won't belabor the facts any more.
Quite simply, if the author can't get his story straight, don't have a note on the cover of the books saying "Straight from Mercedes Lackey's world to ours!" If you like her books, don't bother with this cheap imitation.
Thinly Veiled Cautionary tale...........2004-04-24
I was impressed with Mark Shepherd's writing but had difficulty relating to the characters in the book. (Being well-past my teen years, and never been particularly tempted by drugs or peer pressure).
Part of me was more interested in the elves such as Marbann and Samantha than in the teen angst of Prince Adam and his friends. LOL. still if you are a teen in need of guidance you might enjoy this book.
Peeves? Like most of the books in this series it deals with drug abuse, alcoholism, and how to seek treatment. While youngsters might appreciate the message, oldsters or might find the 'message' a little heavy handed.
A new twist on a popular series.......1999-02-21
Mark Shepherd's Elvendude introduces the Lackey/Shepherd readership to a new, exciting family of elves. A spin-off from the SERRAted Edge series, we meet the "elvendude," Adam McDaris, a teenaged kid in Dallas who doesn't know he's an elf. Good take on the trauma of adolescence, and of drug addiction, which he deals with here with sensitivity and (maybe?) from experience. Despite the dark aspects of the subject matter, Shepherd brings humor and life to the story, and handles the characterization and plotting like a champ. I believe this is his first solo book, but it reads like the fruits of an experienced, seasoned novelist. I look forward to more from him; he shows tremendous potential.
Hilarious!.......1998-07-29
The book in and of itself isn't as good as the general Serrated Edge series, IMO, but I have to admit, the ideas presented inside ... some of them are too funny. If you're a fan of the series, you should definitely read it -- and if not, it's a good bit of humor!
Book Description
The remnants of the ragtag fleet and the battle-scarred Galactica have escaped the clutches of the Cylons and warped into an unknown quadrant of the galaxy. It is a pocket of null-space in which their stardrives will not work. To make matters worse, the recent conflicts have left many wounded and medical supplies are critically low . . . as are the fleet?s food resources and fuel supplies.
While scouts venture forth in search of a habitable planet, the civilian population of the fleet rebels. Fights over the dwindling supplies break out among civilian factions, and the military is called upon to restore order, which only serves to heighten the tensions. And, once again, accusing fingers are pointed squarely at the man whose responsibility it is to assure the safety and well-being of all: Apollo. Even members of the Galactica?s bridge crew turn against him.
Adding to the growing tensions is the fact that Troy and Dalton, Trays and Boomer?the planetary search parties?are missing. But the real stunner is the revelation that Casseopia is pregnant, and that she has acknowledged Apollo as the father!
Apollo and Athena are relieved of their commands and thrown into the brig. Civilians take over and chaos reigns?just in time for the Cylons to arrive. And soon after the Cylons, the even more deadly, alien Chitain show up. Apollo must somehow regain command of the fleet, organize a fight against the Cylons and Chitain, find a way to resupply the fleet and devise an escape route from the pocket of null-space in which they are stuck, before it implodes and destroys everything and everyone caught in it.

Huge fan.......2006-05-19
I was a huge fan growing up of battestar galactica and I am now purchasing the books for my 10 year old to read....hes read all the old editions and now the new ones by richard hatch and he loves them...a must for any true fan.
A major disappontment.......2005-12-19
As a longtime fan of Battlestar Galactica, I have appreciated Richard Hatch's attempts to continue the epic story of the "ragtag, fugitive fleet." And although his earlier books were not without their problems, I enjoyed them because they allowed me to catch up with some familiar characters. Not so for "Rebellion," which I found to be the worst yet. It was barely readable. It had the numerous typos typical of this series, but it also suffered from a lack of narrative that was truly staggering. The book felt rushed in many places, with incredibly weak dialogue. Also, the ability of Sire Aron to take over command, even to the brink of executing Apollo and the others, just wasn't credible. Additionally, Apollo's brutal beating of Jinkrat (not to mention his beating of Starbuck), simply wasn't within character. I'm too big a fan of the original Battlestar Galactica to not read the next book in the series, but I sincerely hope that Hatch improves his work, rather than turn out crap.
worth reading.......2004-10-07
Not the best Richard Hatch Galactica novel but this would have made an interesting episode of the show. The characters are good and I loved the idea of the Galactica going into hyperspace and getting stranded there(!) while mutiny breaks out in the fleet!
not bad.......2004-08-25
The Galactica books switched publishing houses and errors in the books increased and negative criticisms were brutal. I agree that this one could have been improved before publishing, but I don't agree that this book doesn't still have it's merits. This one tries to deal with life and problems in the fleet. It also tries to present an adventure that takes place outside of space itself. Those two unusual elements combined with the errors have gained this one brutal criticisms which I don't think are fair. I thought this was a great read and was very surprised that many others didn't think so. Rebellion is a good story with great characters trapped inside a poorly edited book. The mistakes are a problem, but they also tried to do something different with Rebellion to make it a little unusual. It's not your typical Galactica novel and yet it stays true to the original spirit and characters of the TV program. I respect and appreciate that. Read this one for the story and characters.
the adventure continues in book 4.......2004-07-04
The scewed up thing about these BATTLESTAR books is that book 3 was put out in hard back as a ROUGH DRAFT! Things got slightly better with book 4 but that hard back also had mistakes and typos in it! At this point a lot of fans gave up the ghost.
BUT: They have promised to fix mistakes in the second printings so I've been hunting for the paper back versions. Book 3 in paper back is the revised and finished draft. IT ROCKS! Much much better.
I admit I liked REBELLION in hard back despite the goofs but after seeing the improved RESURRECTION I'd like to see the revised paper back of book 4 too. Until then I can only rate the first printing. First printing grade: Solid B for story and characters. I can't say enough good things about the TRUE version of RESURRECTION which has been printed in paper back.
I hope the same is true of REBELLION.

Why do recipes call for unsalted butter--and salt? What is a microwave, actually? Are smoked foods raw or cooked? Robert L. Wolke's enlightening and entertaining What Einstein Told His Cook offers answers to these and 127 other questions about everyday kitchen phenomena. Using humor (dubious puns included), Wolke, a bona fide chemistry professor and syndicated Washington Post columnist, has found a way to make his explanations clear and accessible to all: in short, fun. For example, to a query about why cookbooks advise against inserting meat thermometers so that they touch a bone, Wolke says, "I hate warnings without explanations, don't you? Whenever I see an 'open other end' warning on a box, I open the wrong end just to see what will happen. I'm still alive." But he always finally gets down to brass tacks: as most heat transfer in meat is due to its water content, areas around bone remain relatively cool and thus unreliable for gauging overall meat temperature.
Organized into basic categories like "Sweet Talk" (questions involving sugar), "Fire and Ice" (we learn why water boils and freezers burn, among other things), and "Tools and Technology" (the best kind of frying pan, for example), the book also provides illustrative recipes like Black Raspberry Coffee Cake (to demonstrate how metrics work in recipes) and Bob's Mahogany Game Hens (showing what brining can do). With technical illustrations, tips, and more, the book offers abundant evidence that learning the whys and hows of cooking can help us enjoy the culinary process almost as much as its results. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
Einstein's cook was lucky. But you, too, can have a scientist in your kitchen: Robert L. Wolke. Does the alcohol really boil off when we cook with wine? Are smoked foods raw or cooked? Are green potatoes poisonous? With the reliability that only a scientist can provide, Robert L. Wolke provides plain-talk explanations of kitchen mysteries with a liberal seasoning of wit. A professor of chemistry and a lifelong gastronome, he has answered hundreds of questions about food and cooking in his syndicated Washington Post column, "Food 101." Organized into basic categories for easy reference, What Einstein Told His Cook contains more than 130 lucid explanations of kitchen phenomena involving starches and sugars, salts, fats, meats and fish, heat and cold, cooking equipment, and more. Along the way, Wolke debunks some widely held myths about foods and cooking. Whether kept in the kitchen or on the reference shelf, What Einstein Told His Cook will be a friendly scientist at your elbow. 20 illustrations.

Funny and interesting cooking facts.......2007-09-11
My husband and I are both engineers and enjoy cooking. This book appealed to us and is a wonderful explanation of the science behind the kitchen. The author has a certain humor, which keeps the book interesting, and explains details well, even for non-technical people. I would recommend it as an addition to your kitchen.

appeals to the cook and the geek in me!.......2007-02-21
Very entertaining, well organized and actually informative. Since I have a pretty extensive bioscience background, I wasn't confused by his explanations so I am not sure how a non-science person would react. But I think he does a pretty nice job of it, coats it in sugar, etc.
Basically if you like books like "The Turk", Devil in the White City, Salt, Freakonomics, etc. then this should be up your alley!
Great Information.......2006-11-05
This book is writting in a such a way that you can read it will leisure. The information gives you a very basic understanding of what happens in a kitchen and why. it's not McGee and doesn't pretend to be.
Very interesting, straightforward and concise.......2006-07-14
This book is well written in a straightforward manner and with an effort to avoid 'high tech' lingo. Very interesting info on the 'advertising' and 'marketing' part of food labeling. It also cuts through all the hype of special salts, sugars and other basic products to discuss the origin of the product, the processing and of course it's use in our food. I recommend this to anyone who likes to know the 'real' science of food and cooking. No agenda, no cause to promote. Just fun facts and interesting science about a wide variety of food and cooking subjects.

Book Description
Pudding Hollow is a real place, a dip between hills in the hamlet of Hawley, Massachusetts. It looks much as it does on the cover of The Pudding Hollow Cookbook, much as it has for more than two centuries. A few homes, the Hawley town office (a former one-room schoolhouse), and a cemetery mark its landscape.
Pudding Hollow is also a place of the imagination and of the heart. To author Tinky Weisblat and to her late friend and collaborator, folk artist Judith Russell, the area has long represented home in a sense that goes beyond the literal. The ties hilltown dwellers feel there, both to the land and to each other, constantly renew valued American rural traditions. Pudding Hollow thus serves as a metaphor for the best in New England life and country life.
The Pudding Hollow Cookbook takes its shape from the New England seasons. It begins with the pinkly tinted winter, which finds Tinky Weisblat and her neighbors hunkering down by the fire with a bowl of stew or soup. It touches on the amber riches of maple syrup in mud season, the versatility of rhubarb and berries as the sun gets higher, the competitions and celebrations of fairs and festivals in the warm days of summer and autumn, and the unstoppability of gourds as the sun begins to recede. It then returns to warm indoor pleasures with pies and puddings.
Weisblat's introductions and stories share the spirit of community that still thrives in portions of the rural United States. The simple-to-prepare recipes include old standbys like onion soup and zucchini bread, traditional New England fare like Indian pudding and Graham bread, and more diverse dishes such as satay and colcannon.
Russell's homey, colorful paintings add to the warmth and flavor of the recipes and stories, making The Pudding Hollow Cookbook an ideal gift for lovers of folk art and rural scenery as well as for fans of country cookery. The book uses history, humor, and imagination to bring a little corner of New England to the wider audience it deserves.

Delicious Bread Pudding.......2005-10-06
The Pudding Hollow cookbook is a unique treasure with warm comforting recipes and nurturing family favorites like Shepherd's Pie and Beef in Horseradish sauce. The recipes come from Hawley, Massachusetts. Here the New England autumn inspires poets and food is not just something purchased at the store. The people live of the land and share their recipes for jams and comforting dinners.
Each chapter begins with stories of the area and Tinky Weisblat shares her cooking experiences. Instantly you are drawn into a world of delicious soups and oatmeal bread. I felt nostalgic as I read about banana cake and glazed pecans. These are treats you may remember from childhood.
Delicious Winter Recipes:
Rhubarb Crisp
Chicken Curry
Chocolate Cherry Cake
Recipes for Summer:
Strawberry Rhubarb Jam
Aunt Lizzie's Ginger Drink
When I needed a recipe for bread pudding to use up my day-old hoagie rolls (they work very nicely sliced), Eric Carle's Bread Pudding looked quite delicious and very rich.
As usual when I'm cooking from a recipe in a cookbook, I used what I had on hand and substituted dried cherries for the raisins, champagne for the Grand Marnier (with ¼ teaspoon Fiori di Sicilia is is about the same), sucanat for the sugar and the addition of apple pie spice on the top with cinnamon sugar and a drizzle of melted butter. Needless to say, I was impressed with how the recipe turned out. It seems you could really vary the tastes and create just about any type of bread pudding with his recipe. The possibilities seem endless and you could make seasonal classics.
My father used to tell me stories about Dandelion Wine and this cookbook actually has a recipe. The art in this book is quaint and lends a nostalgic quality. Judith Russell's folk art has been exhibited in Historic Deerfield and was inspired by the beauty around her.
You may find yourself wishing for a wood fire and the chill of winter or wishing you could jump into the pictures and experience farm life and the cozy feeling of a warm house with snow falling outside the windows. Through creating the foods in this cookbook, you can experience the healing effects of comfort foods. Cookbook collectors will be especially pleased with this find. Perfect for reading on a cold winter night.

As fun to browse as it is easy to cook from.......2004-09-16
Pudding Hollow is a dip between hills in the hamlet of Hawley, Massachusetts. The Pudding Hollow Cookbook is an enthusiastically recommended compendium of recipes that reflect the diverse New England seasons, enhanced with culinary author Tinky "Dakota" Weisblat's anecdotal introductions and stories the express the spirit of those small and intimate communities that sill continue in various parts of a rural United States. From The Charlemont Inn's Cider-Maple Dumplings; Florette's Rhubarb Tea; Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters' Mixed-Berry Scones; and Aunt Fox's Carrot Souffle; to Nancy Dole's Cranberry Relish; Dot's Sour Cream Coffee Cake from the Federated Church Auction; Donovan Baby Red Potato Salad from the Charlemont Riverfest; and Grandmother Parker's Cracker Pudding, The Pudding Hollow Cookbook is as fun to browse as it is easy to cook from.
The Pudding Hollow Cookbook.......2004-08-31
The Pudding Hollow Cookbook by Tinky Weisblat, with illustrations by Judith Russell, is a delight. The recipes range from traditional "Yankee" fare, such as Indian pudding, to recipes from more exotic lands, such as sate from Indonesia. While some of the dishes are fairly complex, all of the recipes are easy to follow and many reflect the bounty of western Massachusetts, notably maple syrup, rhubarb, and apples.
The best elements of the book for me, however, are Tinky's evocation of life in rural "West County". Having spent childhood vacations with family in the area, I enjoyed seeing references to seasonal celebrations (Yankee Doodle Days), regionalisms (people from Heath are known as "Heathens"), and comments about places I regard fondly (the Mohawk Trail and Shelburne Falls' Bridge of Flowers). While the region has become remarkably cosmopolitan in recent years, and the recipes reflect that, it is the evocation of long ago that touched my heart.
Judith Russell's illustrations grace and complement the text with a delightful folk art quality. Her paintings and drawings capture the simplicity of life in the Pudding Hollow region and the seasonal delights to be found there.
More than a cookbook!.......2004-08-27
First, let me say, that my intention is to go through this book, page by page, and try every recipe. (Well, maybe not the maple ones!) That's how good they all sound. But, more than that, this is no ordinary cookbook. Make no mistake about it, this is not an encyclopedia of cooking techniques. The recipes are written in a style suggesting special treats, shared between friends and scribbled on the backs of envelopes. The whimsical comments that accompany each recipe, show a writing skill that mere listing of ingredients could never provide, making it a nifty read, even for the non-cook. In Judith Russell's quaint paintings and sketches, there is always some small detail to delight, as well as a charming look at a New England neighborhood. Granny Toad lives on in these works by the late Judy R. As for the food represented wihin the covers of The Pudding Hollow Cookbook, the choice is broad; Old timey (Sally Lunn, etc.), current favorites (pasta salads, Tex-Mex etc.) and some that must be traditional family favorites. I think I even caught an occasional literary reference, such as Dandilion Wine. I recommend this book for all of these reasons.

Getting Better, But Not There Yet.......2007-08-13
Having been a major collector of banknotes for 40+ years, I find the SCWPM series of banknote catalogs invaluable, but far from complete or accurate. This volume has improved graphics and updated pricing compared to the previous edition. The numbering system is chaotic, pictures misplaced, signature charts missing or incomplete, latest issues missing, etc. Mr. Cuhaj needs some help.
Arghans.......2007-07-19
I was very disappointed by the latest issue of the 'modern issues' catalogue. There are at least two instances of incorrect page-headings, which are confusing, and one group of notes missed out completely - which suggests carelessness in editing the book. However my main disappointment is the number of issues which were new in 2005 or the first half of 2006 which have not been included - which, for a book dated and published in 2007 just is not good enough. If Krause Publications are going to make an annual out of the modern issues catalogue, then they must make the cut-off date for the inclusion of new issues much closer to the publication date. Why could they not put in the front a prominent note saying something like 'including all new issues up to July 2006'?
I feel a bit cheated by Krause.
Keith Potter
Another poor attempt.......2007-06-28
Well yet another year passes and Krause gives us another inferior catalog. Inaccurate prices, incorrect pictures, notes two and three years old still not in the catlog. Since this is the only real catalog we can use for our hobby it has to do but i think that as hobbyists we need to let Krause know they need to take this book more serious and put a little more time, effort and professionalism into it. I know in years past I as well as many other hobbyists have sent Krause email after email with new pictures, errors in the catalog only to see the next catalog with out the changes. So it seems to me they do not take the us or our hobby very serious. It would be very nice to see another publisher get into the race and perhaps come out with the type of catalog we hobbyists deserve.
Best of the best ...........2007-06-27
This catalog is a must for all banknote collectors, even for small collectors. It contains accurate information, is very comprehensive and is easy to use.
Simply the best of the best.
if you are a collector, you must have one.......2007-05-12
This is the catalog you need to have a approximate price for your notes. It is the most serious one, and the most accepted expertise.

Not a book for a beginning card maker.......2006-08-19
I purchased this book along with another card making book, Spectacular Cards, and returned both of them because they both required more supplies than I was willing to purchase. Unless one has lots of already purchased scrapbooking supplies on hand, be prepared to spend LOTS of money for the required items used in each card. This is not a book for a beginning card maker. However, the designs are interesting and directions clear. It is well worth considering if one is more experienced than I.
It is spectacular!.......2006-03-21
There are hundreds, maybe thousands of books that give marvelous ideas for cardmaking and scrapbooking. Spectacular Cards!: Fabric Paper & Game Board Greetings is one that stands out in the crowd.
The book is really a how-to manual that includes tips and techniques, the necessary tools and equipment, adhesives and embellishments. An added benefit is that there is grid that gives you finished card dimensions.
But the directions (with photographs) for fabric preparation are invaluable and makes it so easy to graduate from using cardstock to fabric for the cards. My fabric stash has a new use! And for all those old board games we all have, there is an entire section on how to decorate them with fabric, paper, photos and embellishments for wonderful mega-size greeting cards.
There are sample cards for every occasion and holiday. The directions are clear and concise and the photographs contribute to the ease of cardmaking. People who are visual learners will be thrilled.
My copy will have a prominent place in my library and will be used often.
Armchair Interviews says: Spectacular Cards!: Fabric, Paper & Game Board Greetings is a keeper. It truly is spectacular!

Book Description
This is the most thorough and comprehensive biography to date of writer and activist Paul Green (1894-1981). Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his play In Abraham's Bosom and author of the pioneering symphonic drama The Lost Colony, Green was a literary figure of national prominence during the 1920s and 1930s. During this time of experimentation and boldness in American theater, Green was praised by directors and critics, had a play chosen three times for the collection Year's Best Plays, and gained the respect of African American actors longing for meaningful roles. Green's personal and political convictions fully complemented the social-realist leanings of his art, a literary output comprising plays in many forms, essays, folklore collections, novels, and film scripts. In places like his native North Carolina, Green stood apart even from other proponents of integration by claiming that sexual as well as social intermingling of the races was a natural occurrence in human society.
Drawing on his complete access to Green's papers and on interviews with surviving family members, John Herbert Roper covers all the important aspects of Green's life and career--his childhood, military service, education, travels, and marriage, as well as his many literary undertakings and friendships.
By word and deed, Paul Green spread the faith of liberalism across the New South, which he insistently called the "Real South." Long after literary fashion had left him behind, he wrote daily and remained at the forefront of causes concerning race relations, militarism, women's and workers' rights, and capital punishment. As an artist and an individual, Green set an early and enduring standard of courage and forthrightness.
