The short story Class Trip had me on the edge of my seat for all 120 pages of it. I literally couldn't put the book down--between the clues, the flashbacks, and the eerie setting, Class Trip is an amazing read if you want to be comtemplating the ending for a long time afterwards.

Masterfully Gripping.......2004-07-01

I highly recommend "Class Trip" on all levels. It was disturbing, suspenseful, and wholly believable. Nicholas and Patrick are wonderful characters. I thought about the story long after the final page. (This review pertains to the French Version, "La Class de neige.")

fascinatingly eerie and thought provoking.......2004-01-20

I have always wanted to read a book/novella that was so fascinating I think about the issues it has presented to me for a long time to come. I have found that book. It is enjoyable, tense and quite intriguing. I recomend this book to anyone looking for a horror/suspenseful book that is a bit more deep and sophisticated than Stephen King or Dean Koontz but still easy enough to read and enjoy immediately.
Read it when you are in a dark mood.

Scary.......2003-07-18

In my opinion, this is the perfect book to read, on a rainy day shortly after you have been dumped by your girlfriend who has been cheating on you behind your back and you can't sleep because in between nightmares of flying fanged demons you wake up to see her face hovering above you.

I read this book and was scared. My friends read it and they were scared. It's a scary book. Scary.

If you like Stephen King, and Clive Barker, and all those other modern 'horror' writers. Then you may want to look a bit harder for good fiction. This kind of stuff blows them right out of the water.

Existentialist Horror.......2001-07-26

I found these two novellas to be disturbingly warped (but I liked that). Carrere imaginatively explores the dark side of the human mind, what our mind can do to us, in an interesting way. These stories are short, but they pack an emotional punch that you won't soon forget. Class Trip is about a young, hyperimaginative, lonely boy on a class skiing trip when something goes horribly wrong and the real world unfortunately catches up with the horrible world of his imagination. The Mustache is about a man who shaves off his mustache, only to have everyone he knows, including his wife, deny that it ever existed. Other bits of his world start vanishing without a trace and there is a clever ending. Both of these works are intriguing, eerie and fascinating. I would recommend them to anyone who wants a little sophisticated horror.

Disappointing sequel.......2007-02-20

Tea with the Black Dragon was a wonderfully subtle book. This sequel gets lost in it's own meanderings. A disappointing work from one of my favorite authors. (Actually the only book of her's that I have ever been disappointed with!)

nice read - poorly proofed.......2006-05-21

This book is a nice follow-up to Tea With The Black Dragon. I didn't expect it to match the first one - and it didn't - but it did satisfy my curiosity about Martha's life with Long.

That being said, and this is no fault of the story or the author, this book is one of the worst edited and proofed I've ever read -full of disconcerting typos. It should be discounted as a damaged product.

Tea with a Black Dragon. Much better in my opinion. I read both of these books about 20 years ago, and was not disappointed with my re-read of the Dragon. However I remembered too late I was disappointed in the sequel. For me, personally, it was too much about the music mileau.

One thing I regret is that Ruth doesn't explain the reality behind the mysterious happenings either logically or mystically. I'd like to know why and how, not just who and when in the 'mystic' of it all.

What's a Dragon to Do?.......2002-04-12

Mayland Long and Martha Macnamara are as unlikely a couple as you could hope to meet. Martha is a fiftyish musician, Mayland is-- well, Mayland is unusual, as people who have read the first book in this set, Tea With the Black Dragon, know. When the book opens Mayland, Martha, Martha's young granddaughter Marty, and an ill assorted group of egotistical musicians have been on tour for eight weeks, playing traditional (and not so traditional) Irish folk songs. At this point tempers are frayed while insults (and the occasional fist) are flying.

Then Marty disappears, a member of the band is found hanged by a twisted grass rope off a Pacific pier, and it up to Martha and Mayland to solve the mystery of where Marty is and who the murderer is.

Written in the mid 80's this book is a great favorite of mine, an urban fantasy mystery that mixes Celtic and Eastern lore with some solid detection. The scenes with the band seem very true to life and the fantasy elements are delightfully underplayed. The chapter titles, by the way, as well as the title Twisting the Rope are all titles of trad. Irish tunes.

Living with the Enemy.......2002-11-27

This is yet another of Cherryh's books set in her Alliance-Union universe, but told from a rather different perspective than most of the others in this series.

Very little of this book is actually about the war, instead choosing to focus on a middle-aged female warrior, Bet Yeager, who has been effectively marooned on one of the Rim stations, and living from hand to mouth while avoiding detection by any cognizant authority. Finally left with no more options on the station, she takes a new berth on a 'shadow' spy ship belonging to what to her is the 'enemy'. Once on board, she has to earn the respect of her shipmates, put up with sadistic officers, and keep a clamp on her history from 'the other side'. With this as a basic outline, the story really revolves around her continuing growth as a person, stretching herself to perform actions she didn't believe she was capable of, and the (sometimes strange) friendships she makes as she learns the ins and outs of her new shipboard comrades.

Told in Cherryh's typical breathless style, often with incomplete sentences, a frequent recourse to alphabet-soup acronyms, and backgrounds that are often only sketched in, the story ripples rapidly towards its climax, making for quick reading. Perhaps a little too quick, as there is a little bit of a rushed feeling to the climax. And as always with Cherryh, this style takes some getting used to, and readers unfamiliar with some of other books in the series may feel a little lost.

There is some real action here, of the type that Cherryh is known for, but filtered through Yeager's perceptions. Beyond the action, the item that makes this stand out from the run-of-mill works is the strong character development of Yeager in the face of multiple difficult situations, some of which would have a direct correspondence to the problems of women in the American workplace. Some of Yeager's solutions to certain of her situations will put a new face on casual sexual relations on a mixed gender ship, an item of relevance now for the Navy. But this is not a strident call to the feminist movement, but rather a statement in story form of the real power and necessity of independent women, of women living up to (and being allowed to do so) their full potential.

A different viewpoint, a strong female role model, perhaps a little too short and rushed, but still a strong work.

The strongest woman hero ever to appear in science fiction!.......1999-08-11

If you have ever wished for a "classic" science fiction action adventure novel with a female lead... this is it. Bet Yeager (our hero) is a combat soldier who has been separated from her unit and must find her own way in enemy space. From the very first pages, Yeager is relentlessly focused, unshakeably stubborn, and merciless in the face of attack. She finds allies, but needs no one to rescue her. She can be friendly, but she has never simpered or batted her eyelashes in her life. Yeager is the strongest woman character I have ever met & the book is worth a read for that alone. As always, Cherryh's writing gives you a world (and a character) to fall into. This is my favorite of all of Cherryh's science fiction novels.

Real. Life at the gritty end, on space stations, on the lower decks of military spacecraft, on the rim of known space. This book is set in C. J. Cherryh's 'Merchanters' universe. A (female) crew tech who has been marooned on a station on the Rim signs up in desperation with a cargo ship with shady military connections. Her misgivings are not without foundation! The vocabulary, the ships, the technology, the people and the story are all so convincing that it comes as rather a shock to find oneself back in the 20th century at the end of the book! Yes I'm biased. C. J. Cherryh is my favourite author in any genre. Read her - she'll soon be yours too.

This is the first book of hers that I read. I totaly fell in love with her writing. The univers her characters are living in is very interesting, I'm looking forward reading the rest of her books

Delicious and easy to make recipes.......2007-08-27

This is an excellent cook book on American barbequeing and the recipes I have made have been easy to make and delicious.I have been a bit dubious about some of the recipes after I have read the ingredients list but every time the recipes have turned out better than expected but exactly how the author Ray Lampe described.For instance I made the creamy coleslaw and it didn't sound like it would be that good but it was easy to make and the best coleslaw I have tasted.By contrast I have made a coleslaw from 'The Best Recipe cook book American Classics'and this has had a long description and went into great detail about every stage of making the coleslaw but the end result has been very disappointing.The book also contains little anecdotes about each recipe and the world of competition barbequeing and this all adds to the book.Overall this is an excellent book and I will be buying the rest of Ray Lampe's cook books.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. BBQ at the Arkansas Literary Festival a couple of years ago. I bought his book then, and recently purchased another for my son.

Unlike most cookbooks, this one isn't just recipes and clinical information about the ingredients and preparation methods. Dr. BBQ includes stories about the people behind the recipes, as well as his own philosophy about weighty questions such as: Gas, charcoal, wood or pellets? Charcoal? Well then, chunk or briquette?

And to the people who insist that using gas isn't the way to prepare REAL bbq or charcoal isn't and so on, the Dr. suggests that unless they are going out naked and killing an animal with a stick before cooking it then THEY aren't really preparing bbq the traditional way either.

Good fun, good food, good guy. The recipes are easy to follow and produce great Q, but I must admit, I use this book for inspiration much more than for the recipes.

Empowering book.......2005-05-14

I was diagnosed with CFS more than 10 years ago, and this was one of the books I got at that time. I just finished re-reading it, and remembered why I liked it so much. It emphasizes that there are many things *we* can do to help ourselves rather than waiting for the doctor to dole out little pills. The other two books I'd gotten were much more focused on a victim-mentality.

One of the reviewer mentions Murray's recommendation for exercise. Yes, hard exercise or physical strain knocks me flat on my back for a few days. But, gradual amounts of light exercise do make me feel better, and I've been able to do more over the years. Murray perhaps doesn't emphasize the gradual part of the exercise program. I wish he'd been clearer about what kind of exercises are useful, and how to gage how much is too much. He doesn't mention anything about yoga, either. He *does* mention in other portions of the text that physical exertion does lead to excessive exhaustion.

One problem with the book is the overview nature. It does cover a lot of different things, but doesn't really delve deeply into any one. It does have some recommendations for herbal support, and gives a good sample diet. But, as it does cover a breadth of things, it does suggest further avenues to explore.

I don't feel this book is the end-all and be-all of CFS self-treatment books, but it is a positive book, and well worth the money.

Do NOT but this book.......2003-08-26

This is the worst book about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome that I have ever read! His suggestions to exercise show clearly that he NO understanding of CFS/CFIDS! Yes, exercise will help many people with fatigue, even chronic fatigue; but not Chronic Fatigue SYNDROME. For someone with true CFS (also known as CFDIS) exercise will make things worse, sometimes far worse!
He also talks about all kinds of other things (such as hypothiroidism) that can cause fatigue but have nothing to do with CFS. (other than the fact that if you have CFS these things have already been ruled out by your doctor and are not the cause). So long discussions of those causes of fatigue are useless if you've already been diagnosed!
There are a lot of other holes in this book. It was a total waste of money, and I'll be throwing it out!
There are many GOOD CFS/CFIDS books, buy one of those!

after reading the reviews by other amazon buyers and being a big thunderbird fan i bought the book. i am really glad i only paid a few dollars. while its fairly good reading the majority of the color pictures appear out of focus and for some reason dark. the black and whites appear good. as a collector of automobile books i rarely see pictures this bad, especially in a anniversary edition.

John Katz is probably the most important automotive historian of this time. His books are methodically and painstakingly researched, and his writing style is engaging and enjoyable. If you car about cars, you need this book.

As any Brothers Hildebrandt fan knows, Greg and Tim's first Tolkein calender went on to become a worldwide bestseller. Some of the art,such as Unexpected Party or Gandalf with the Balrog was simply brilliant. Some of it looks dated today such as the hideous 1976 granny dress that Galadriel wears or the Sgt. Pepper mustache on Aragorn and the silly looking Fell beasts ridden by Nazgul who look like they're about to fall off at any minute. Oh well. Nobody got out of the 70s without some style howlers. Laugh at the funny stuff and be awed by the great.

One of the strongest and most charming elements of the book is the descriptions from Greg Hildebrant's son who was five when the brothers began working on the calenders. Young Greg's memories are full of wonder that's in keeper with what his uncle and father were working on. It's not all sweetness and light however, young Greg remembers that toward the middle of the project things got increasingly difficult in the studio. The pressures of the deadline, creative disagreements and artistic disappointments (Among other things the brothers didn't have time to do a huge battle scene that they'd planned) and the need to do separate projects are all mentioned.

Besides all three Hildebrandt calenders, the book has pictures of privately commissioned works (some of which are better than the orginal paintings), prelim sketches, and photos of the models. If you loved the work of the brothers or have just discovered it this will be a highly entertaining treat for you.

Some great art, some not so great.......2003-12-31

I loved the Hildebrandts' art as a kid, and I appreciate being able to revisit it in this handsome volume. Engaging scenes, fabulous detail, vivid colors, and some of the best Tolkien paintings ever (the Ring of Galadriel, Old Man Willow, the Pillars of the Kings, Saruman and the Palantir). Their influence can be seen in many subsequent interpretations of Tolkien (compare the Hildebrandts' "Eowyn and the [left-handed] Nazgul" with the same scene in the 2004 Ted Nasmith calendar) and in much "generic" fantasy art.

But... Some of the earlier works have odd perspective (check out the chimney in "Gandalf visits Bilbo"). The hobbits look like children (the 5-year-old Greg Hildebrandt Jr. was the model). Shadowfax just fell off the carousel. Treebeard is a cartoon. Rivendell looks like a gingerbread house. Smaug appears to be made of plastic. The Nazgul fly around on rubber chickens (really, that's what they used as the model). And Aragorn's mustache! Perhaps it looked majestic in the 70s, but now it's just laughable.

It is interesting to see the sketches (some of which are superior to the final painting) and reference photos. The text is annoyingly told from the author's perspective as a 5-year-old model, but contains some amusing nuggets like the rubber chicken fell beast. I didn't think much of the pullout poster -- it's certainly not their best work. Still, on balance I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Tolkien (unless you already have the calendars).

Journey through middle earth like you've never done before!.......2003-02-06

I hadn't actually heard of the Hildebrandt brothers,but got this book for the simple fact that it bore the name of Tolkien.I opened it up and there it was,scenes I pictured in my head were now right in front of me,in richly painted acrylic colors,with moods of sadness,fear,peace,and courage.I recommend this book and give it five stars!Get it come on you know you want to....

A must for any Tolkien fan.......2002-10-03

The Bros. Hildebrandt were *the* Tolkien artists of my youth, and even today, when I find my own artistic interpretion of the scenes varies so much from theirs, I still deeply appreciate what they did, and am thrilled to see their calendar work -- with the associated sketches and model photos -- reproduced here.

The childhood anecdotes by the author -- son of one of the Brothers -- are occasionally interesting, more often annoying. But the art itself remains glorious.

Theatre lovers ahoy!.......2005-11-02

You need chutzpah to review a book about one of the greatest reviewers of all time, but what the hell! Let's get the grotty stuff out of the way - Mr Shellard does not resile from the personal as we learn this bastard Englishman Kenneth Peacock Tynan had an irritating stutter, developed a taste for sado-masochistic sex, was a wife beater, who smoked three packs a day and was a wildly attractive personality who was on a first name basis with Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams. The real interest in Mr Tynan was his influence in helping shape the emergence of some of the greatest theatre of the last century and his legacy of writing associated with that mission - and mission it was. He knew what moved him in the theatre and he was fearless in letting all and sundry know about it. This meticulously researched biography is naturally of special interest to drama teachers, theatre lovers etc but it also sets much of the action within the context of the post war malaise in Britain, the Suez crisis, Vietnam and so forth. It also illuminates the role of the Lord Chamberlain and the stifling censorship which shackled so much British theatre until the likes of Mr Tynan took up the cause. Well worth a read.
