4 out of 5 stars A good book for a Movie.......2003-11-22

A children's football team, racial integration, the early 60's, sounds a good recipe for a movie.

A children's football team, racial integration, the early 60's, sounds like a good recipe for a Disney movie. Perhaps this was the hidden intention of screenwriter Scott Staerkel's first novel WHEN THE WHISTLE BLOWS.

In a novel set in an American Midwest City in 1964 the author tackles the topic of racism. The idea of having fifth and sixth grade African American kids playing football on the same team as the white kids was not good news for the white folks.
However, what do you do when you are supposed to field a football team with eighteen players and only fifteen show up to try out? The only place to find the other three kids is on the other side of the tracks where the African American kids hang out. There's the problem. How do you convince some of the red neck parents, as well as your union sponsors, that you will have to recruit these kids if the team is to qualify?

Will coach Bill Campbell decide to take the plunge and convince the African American kids to join, even if he meets up with blatant racism? Once he does overcome this hurdle, how does he face the hate letters he receives or the stalking of one of his key African American players?

As the story unfolds, Campbell's team, named the United Oil Workers Union Oilers overcomes all of these challenges. They win all of their games and finally succeed in meeting the previous years champions, the McKinley Knights, in the final showdown.

Writing a novel is different than writing a screenplay, and although it may seem to be an easy transition, such is not the case. The novel allows for deeper story and character development, and herein we notice the weakness of Staerkel's first novel. Unfortunately, the plot is predictable and the characters lack development. I have to admit it is not an easy task to achieve the grace and artistry that are the hallmarks of great novelists. However, I do hope Staerkel keeps on plodding away, as he is a good storyteller and shows a lot of promise as a novelist.

5 out of 5 stars Why this book blew my whistle...........2002-11-19

I just finished reading Mr.Staerkel's first book. It is a story of a man who does not set out be a man who influences the minds of his small town. All he wants is for his son to play football. In order for that to happen he has to bring in kids from "Colored Town". This is a preposterous idea in most people's minds. For Bill, it gives his son a chance to play. For Charles, it gives him the chance to be a hero, and for this small town, it gives them a chance to change their mind. Maybe it will even change yours too.

    Book Description

How do you educate the children who do not want to come to school - and whom schools don't want? Caleb Duck, a burnt-out inner-city teacher of triumphs in teaching the unteachable by adopting their values. He marks off the days by sticking boogers to the classroom radiator. At war against the curriculum and his officious Headmaster, Duck watches as the school descends into an anarchy of sex, drugs and cannibalism.

Set in Bristol, England, this bitter, anarchic black comedy could happen in any inner city school in the U.S. The book received great reviews in all the teaching journals and inner city magazines in the UK.

Alex Kirk awakens a million years from now, utterly alone and in terrible danger on a brave new Earth. Mankind has been extinct for eons, and Alex Kirk is marooned like no human ever before--not just in space, but in time. He is the last of his kind, an afterthought of evolution or fate, and now he must either perish or conquer this world and its many mysteries. This is an entirely fresh and original novel, which innovatively evokes and builds upon Defoe's literary classic. Earth in 1,000,000 A.D. is a planet of surprises, from huge saltwater flowers and the giant butterflies that pollinate them, to the sinister and deadly rippers that lurk hour after hour waiting for Alex to make a single mistake so they can devour him. And there is much more: living caves; armed and marauding aftermen; a curious smudge in space, beside the moon, that encapsulates the secret of what happened to mankind. Starting alone and with nothing except his fierce will to survive, Alex courageously explores, battles, and conquers. He ultimately confronts the enigma of who he is and why the ancient humans shipwrecked him beyond time and space. Is there a woman-Friday to relieve what would otherwise be a nightmare existence for Alex Kirk? Read this novel and learn the answer. Hint: "strawberry ice cream."

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read.......2005-10-06

I enjoyed this book very much. I love sci-fi novels but my favorite types are those dealing with "time travel" and those about the state of the human race FAR into the future. This novel caught my interest because of the "Robinson Crusoe" theme.

This one did not disappoint me as I finished it in just a few days. The only thing that kept me from giving it 5-stars was that there is no sequel. I think a follow-up story would have great potential. Who knowa ... maybe the author is working on one now. I can only hope!

                Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Ruth Reichl's first book, the autobiographical Tender at the Bone, disarmed readers with its droll candor. The former restaurant critic of The New York Times and editor in chief of Gourmet magazine told great stories about growing up and loving food. Comfort Me with Apples begins where the first book ended, tracing Reichl's evolution from chef to food writer while detailing the dissolution of her first marriage, the start of a second, and motherhood at the age of 40. The book also limns a sensual journey, Reichl's awakening to the pleasures of sex as well as food, and also to love. Reichl interweaves her diverse coming-of-age narratives with passion (especially on the subject of food), wit, and a no-nonsense grace, all of which add up to a wonderful read--entertaining, but moving, too.

The story begins when Reichl, living in a '70s Berkeley commune, gets her first real job as a restaurant reviewer. Despite the incredulity of her in-the-movement roommates ("You're going to spend your life telling spoiled, rich people where to eat?" asks one), Reichl persists, traveling widely to polish her palate. In the doing she meets food luminaries such as Wolfgang Puck (a mad encounter in a produce market), M.F.K. Fisher (lunch and sweet reminiscences), and Alice Waters (a garlic feast), among others. Her trip to China, which includes clandestine dealings with a former chef, is particularly well handled. The ungluing of her first marriage is depicted in adroit emotional counterpoint to her soaring career, as is her discovery of love with her second husband, unspooled against her father's death. Reichl also provides recipes, such as Fall Mushroom Soup (made to comfort herself and her mother) that, unexpectedly and delightfully, deepen the narrative. --Arthur Boehm

                Book Description

In this delightful sequel to her bestseller Tender at the Bone, Ruth Reichl returns with more tales of love, life, and marvelous meals. Comfort Me with Apples picks up Reichl’s story in 1978, when she puts down her chef’s toque and embarks on a career as a restaurant critic. Her pursuit of good food and good company leads her to New York and China, France and Los Angeles, and her stories of cooking and dining with world-famous chefs range from the madcap to the sublime. Throughout it all, Reichl makes each and every course a hilarious and instructive occasion for novices and experts alike. She shares some of her favorite recipes, while also sharing the intimacies of her personal life in a style so honest and warm that readers will feel they are enjoying a conversation over a meal with a friend.

                5 out of 5 stars Delectable Memoir -- I loved it!!!!.......2007-09-12

Ruth Reichl has done it again -- completely mesmerized me with a book I found hard to put down.

The current editor of Gourmet magazine goes from food critic a New West Magazine to the LA Times in this, the sequel to her first memoir, Tender at the Bone. How she reinvents herself from a hippie living in a commune in Berkeley cooking for her housemates to being one of the most respected food critics in the country is told with her usual candor, intelligence, humor, and poignancy. Her essay toward the end about her struggle with infertility left me weeping. An unbearable heartbreak for Ruth and Michael had me so emotional I had to put the book down at one point. But then an act of extraordinary kindness on the part of some of her dear friends several pages later made me sigh.

Thank goodness I had already read her bio and knew that in the end things turn out well for her, but I was struck by how hard it must have been for her to write about some of these episodes and she addresses this in her acknowledgements at the end of the book.

I enjoyed the stories she shares of how difficult it is for one to open a new restaurant and was particularly interested in the story of Wolfgang Puck's wife Barbara (who we met briefly at her now-defunct Seattle restaurant several years ago).

Another excellent read from Ruth Reichl. Her third book, Garlic and Sapphires is next. I can hardly wait!

5 out of 5 stars Deliciously Satisfying Sequel.......2007-08-26

Ruth Reichl currently serves as editor of "Gourmet" magazine, an exalted position for any foodie. She also was once the restaurant critic for the "New York Times," but her journey as critic emerged from a much bumpier, more interesting path at a commune in Berkeley, California. "Comfort Me with Apples" follows on from Reichl's first book, her childhood exposure to the wonderful world of food, "Tender at the Bone." That book was so outstanding, I had a hard time imagining how Reichl's sequel could be as good, but it is.

In "Comfort Me with Apples," Reichl's tales of fine dining, celebrity chefs, and the pursuit of a great meal are colored with stories of her own love life, marriage and divorce, travel, friendships, and her desire for motherhood. Her pursuit of adopting a child is perhaps the most life-changing and heart-breaking story of all. And all along the way, we are lured by the amazing, accompanying meals. This memoir will make your mouth water and your heart ache.

Don't feel that you need to read "Tender at the Bone" first. This book stands up on its own, but all of Reichl's writing is so engaging, why would you miss any of it?

4 out of 5 stars Writes with an open heart .......2007-04-09

Although Ruth has encounted her share of life's obstacles and heartache, she continues to embrace life with a sense of humor and an open heart, which I think is the key to her success. Pork Chops and Applesauce: A Collection of Recipes and Reflections

4 out of 5 stars An account of the personal experiences of an author.......2006-08-14

This book is a memoir. It is not a simple tale of food. If you somehow are confussed about this like some of the reviewers you may not like this book very much. I actually enjoyed this on many levels - the honesty took my breath away. But is also made me feel uncomfortable knowing the people in this book might be hurt all over again by the telling of the tale. Hoping that's not the case I must say this book has a unique "flavor" and may not appeal to everyone. It did me.

5 out of 5 stars Light, fun read.......2006-05-06

Easy, fun read. Much better than watching mind numbing garbage on the telly. I agree with some reviewers that the author went on a bit too long about her sexcapades but nevertheless I was entertained. I really enjoyed her style of writing. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on "Tender at the Bone."

                    4 out of 5 stars Souper Fun.......2000-07-29

If you like reading about domestic history, you'll like this book, even if you don't care about tomatoes or tomato soup. Well researched, well written, it's clear the author had a good, if exhausitve time writing it. Writing about wars and battles is all very well, but to me, this gives more insight about American history than any thing I've read in a long time.

4 out of 5 stars All about tomatoes and soup.......2000-07-26

Smith's Souper Tomatoes is exactly what you would expect: 178 pp (+ references and index) on every aspect of the history of tomatoes and soup. Chapters cover the origin of soups, the origins of tomatoes, the tomato canning industry, the tomato soup industry and finally a collection of historical recipes. The tomato originated in South America and was brought to Europe in the 16th century. New Jersey proved to have the ideal climate and was the early center of the industry. Tomato canning began about the time of the Civil War. Initially most work was done by hand, but processing and canning were mechanized by turn of the century. California displaced NJ as the leader in tomato growing owing to a longer growing season and larger fields better suited to mechanical harvesting. Major efforts were made over the years to develop new tomato strains, especially the Rutgers tomato, and later California strains.

Initially all tomato products were produced and canned whenever the crop was ripe. Today ripe tomatoes are processed to juice concentrate. Soup, juice and related tomato products are made from concentrate all year round. The various processes are described in detail, but are not overly technical. More illustrations would have been helpful.

Souper Tomatoes is Smith's third book on the subject. Earlier ones include The Tomato in America, 1994 and Pure Ketchup, 1996.

For those who really want to know about this esoteric subject, Souper Tomatoes is a great read.

                      Book Description

Each year in the United States, millions of mass-produced greeting cards proclaim their occasional messages: "For My Loving Daughter," "On the Occasion of Your Marriage," and "It's a Boy!" For more than 150 years, greeting cards have tapped into and organized a shared language of love, affection, and kinship, becoming an integral part of American life and culture. Contemporary incarnations of these emotional transactions performed through small bits of decorated paper are often dismissed as vacuous clichés employing worn-out stereotypes. Nevertheless, the relationship of greeting cards to systems of material production is well worth studying and understanding, for the modern greeting card is the product of an industry whose values and aims seem to contradict the sentiments that most cards express. In fact, greeting cards articulate shifting forms of love and affiliation experienced by people whose lives have been shaped by the major economic changes of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A Token of My Affection shows in fascinating detail how the evolution of the greeting card reveals the fundamental power of economic organization to enable and constrain experiences of longing, status, desire, social connectedness, and love and to structure and partially determine the most private, internal, and intimate of feelings.

Beautifully illustrated, A Token of My Affection follows the development of the modern greeting card industry from the 1840s, as a way of recovering that most elusive of things -- the emotional subjectivity of another age. Barry Shank charts the evolution of the greeting card from an afterthought to a traditional printing and stationery business in the mid-nineteenth century to a multibillion-dollar industry a hundred years later. He explains what an industry devoted to emotional sincerity means for the lives of all Americans. Blending archival research in business history with a study of surviving artifacts and a literary analysis of a broad range of relevant texts and primary sources, Shank demonstrates the power of business to affect love and the ability of love to find its way in the marketplace of consumer society.

5 out of 5 stars A highly readable and entertaining antebellum diary........1998-02-16

Those who are disappointed by the dregs of antebellum women's diaries predominating in publishing today will find plenty to make them happy here. This book is chatty, gossipy, quite frank and revealing, yet informative; in all, a true window into the lives of two sisters. I recommend it highly as a read, however; as a $45 purchase...go see if the library has it first. -Marianna

4 out of 5 stars Helps keep the kids busy.......2006-08-17

We've used the "52 Things to Do in the Car" on trips with our 3 and 5 year olds, and it has helped pass the time and keep them from getting too bored (or watching DVDs the whole time). We also use some of them on the plane. The "games" are good for a range of ages--some are too advanced for my kids yet, but others they can do with help. It's nice and small to bring along. You only need paper and pencil or crayons for most activities (imagining things, spotting things, letter and number games, pretending). Wish I had these on all those long car trips we took as kids!

5 out of 5 stars Sparkling, romantic and inventive........2000-12-18

What a delightful way to generate ideas for spicing up a cozy/comfy relationship or showing that special new person how thoughtful and creative you are!

Or...wrap it up as a gift to gently say to someone what you really might like and keep the passion alive.

Gordon's treatment of the modernist master and author of Waiting for Godot is less harsh than the influential 1978 biography by Deirdre Bair, in which Beckett was represented as neurotic, cold, and hermitic. Gordon's study presents Beckett as an alert, even compassionate observer of his times and an heir to the Great Tradition of literary heavyweights. Much of the book focuses on the times rather than the life, summarizing political and intellectual history. Beckett once said that while James Joyce worked toward "omniscience and omnipotence as an artist," he himself worked from "impotence, ignorance." Gordon's work belies that modesty.

                                        Book Description

Samuel Beckett has long been identified with the debilitated and impotent characters he created. In this provocative book, Lois Gordon offers a new perspective on Beckett, challenging the prevalent image of him as reclusive, self-absorbed, and disturbed. Gordon investigates the first forty years of Beckett`s life and finds that he was, on the contrary, a kind and generous man who responded sensitively and even heroically to the world around him.

Gordon adds significant insight into this period of Beckett's life, and her book details the times and environment very well. However, I can't help but think that her primary reason for writing it (other than to publish rather than perish) is a personal vendetta against Bair. She seems determined to demolish the latter's biography, point by point. Worth reading anyway.
