Book Description

Originally published in 1956, A River Called Titash is among the most highly acclaimed novels in Bengali literature. A unique combination of folk poetry and ethnography, Adwaita Mallabarman's tale of a Malo fishing village at the turn of the century captures the songs, speech, rituals, and rhythms of a once self-sufficient community and culture swept away by natural catastrophe, modernization, and political conflict.
Both historical document and work of art, this lyrical novel provides an intimate view of a community of Hindu fishers and Muslim peasants, coexisting peacefully before the violent partition of Bengal between India and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Mallabarman's story documents a way of life that has all but disappeared.

1 out of 5 stars The author does manage to acomplish something.......2001-12-20

If there is one thing that the author acomplishes in this book it is making you feel the pain of the malo people. As they suffer food shortages you can literally feel there hunger pains. As the malo's are beaten you feel as though you are being beaten as well, The author realy does a good job of making you feel pain. This book has realy tought me what mental pain realy is.This is one of the few books that it actualy hurts to read, it is that bad. My class mates and I were realy able to feel the pain and suffering of the malo people that is described in this book.

1 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK MAKES ME SNORE.......2001-06-07

The book A River Called Titash was written by Adwaita Mallabarman. Adwaita Mallabarman was born in Gokanghat village, India, and the book was originally published in 1956 in the Bengali Language. In 1997 the book was republished in the English language by Kalpana Bardhan. The book is set in the early 1900's on the Titash River which is now in modern day Bangladesh. The book is about the life of the Malo fishing community and many other communities, who live on the Titash. The people have different motivations for the many things that they do. They have many causal factors that drive them to do the things they do. In our cultural materialist social theory there is a thing called the "house diagram." The house diagram has three levels, the material level, the social level, and the idea level. The material level is the most important level. The material level includes subsistence technology, the economy, ecology, environment, and the mode of reproduction. You can tie most peoples motivations to the material level. This is because a lot of motivations come from the need to survive. Some important motivations are; that in certain seasons they are unable to get food because the environment of the Titash is constantly changing. Another main motivation from the material level is the fact that in their economy it is extremely difficult for them to get the food and money they need for survival. This causes the employers to pay the employees very little money in exchange for a large amount of work. Important ideas also come from the social level of the house diagram. This level is home to family and kinship structures, education, the social structure, and the system of leadership or government. These ideas include their social structure of inequality, the people in the higher classes believe that they are a superior race than the people of the lower classes. They feel that the lower class is a different species than they are and that anything someone of a lower class touches is defiled. Another motivation is that people only feed and take care of the people in their family because they don't have enough resources to feed two families. Motivations also come from the Idea level. The idea level is home to the art, literature, science, religion, social norms, beliefs, and values. A big motivation from the idea level is that religion is incredibly important in peoples lives, they use resources, the resources they don't have to show respect for their gods. They love their gods and this is what makes religion so important.

note: typed in chat lt. :)

I find it hard to give somthing 5 stars but, this a very good book. It is not for your every day gamer tho, it is a hevy duty source book witch covers New Orleans and DC by night, it is filled with lots of history and chr info for dozens of ppl in both cities outlinning most every residing Kindred(and evean some Huntes and Mages)knowen to be there! New Orleans also comes with a canned story witch is filled with lots of source info in it's self.

not to say the book has no flaws i find if funny that none of the Kindred in New Orleans or DC have any (no merits either:)) but with that aside i find it hard to point my finger at any thing else

so all and all i would say it a must have for any WoD guru

      3 out of 5 stars Fast Walker.......2000-05-28

The fact that Vallee decided to write (cooperate) on a `fiction novel' (not seen from Vallee since his youth) is a curious note in and of itself. Fast Walker is a somewhat focused story while thinly woven around a `balanced' set of characters, representing the UFO genre, more prevalent in the Eighties. The lives of an abductee; a UFO writer/researcher; a military `working group' and a fanatical UFO cult leader all converge toward a climax as the plot thickens. The book is quite useful for contrasting various elements of the UFO scene while creating a sense of `being there.' The outlook portrayed in the end raises a battery of questions and an alternate theory for the UFO question when compared to recent, mainstream thought. Entertaining.

      3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2000-01-08

Basically, Vallee takes his own theories on what UFOs are all about and slots them into a "fictional" account. (Like that other "fiction" book ALIEN RAPTURE). Vallee is big on deception, the idea that aliens aren't really alien at all but something else and are tricking us into thinking so.

The ideas are interesting, but as a story, the book is kind of lame.

5 out of 5 stars Best Gluten-Free Recipes is an apt title.......2007-03-09

I have already baked the white bread and the chocolate cake, and they taste almost liked they were baked with wheat flour.

5 out of 5 stars A really great, new GF cookbook.......2006-07-09

I have celiac disease, which is essentially an allergy to wheat protein, and I've been GF for 5 years now. (Why does that sound like I'm at an AA meeting?) Bette Hagman's books are the first couple of books that I got, and they're pretty good. There are still a lot of recipes that I make out of those books.

*125 Best GF Recipes*, however, is my new favorite book. Unlike some other cookbooks that include recipes that bear astonishing similarities to Hagman's recipes, Washburn and Butt (Heather Butt is the co-author, oh Amazon person who deleted that the first time. It's not a naughty word. It's her *name.* Look at the cover.) have devised new, intriguing, useful recipes that use even *fewer* ingredients than traditional GF recipes. One of my favorites is the "Lavosh," (p16). I omit the yeast and the vinegar (there's no proofing time, anyway,) and add a 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder. Then, don't spread it as thin as a cracker, but pretty thin, and bake it at 375F. You get something between pita bread and Indian fry bread. Phenomenal! And in under 45 minutes from start to eating! This has become my staple bread recipe.

The only thing that I don't really like about the book is that it is essentially divided into fourths. The first quarter is odd-type breads, like the lavosh and scones. The second quarter is bread recipes for the bread machine. The next quarter is those same recipes for hand-mixing (thus repeating a bunch of recipes.) The last quarter is cakes and pies.

      Highly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Gluten-Free Recipes.......2004-03-04

Celiac disease is a poorly understood digestive disorder that affects both children and adults. It is an auto-immune disease that affects the small intestine, and is the result of an intolerance to gluten found in wheat, rye and barley and products derived from these grains. There are no drugs or a cure for this disease. Only a diet free of foods containing gluten is effective in living with the disease and avoiding the symptoms which make celiac disease so troubling.

While there are a number of gluten-free cookbooks on the market, Donna Washburn and Heather Butt have elevated gluten-free (GF) cooking from relatively boring, excessively "healthful" recipes to delicious, easy to prepare recipes made from easily obtainable ingredients. The book is well laid out, with good, sensible information on the ingredients required for safe gluten-free eating. The illustrations are well-done and colourful, and accurately reflect how the dishes look when properly prepared. All the recipes we have tried have been successful and tasty, but several stand out as exceptional. These include ciabatta (p. 38) an excellent substitute for regular bread, without the pound-cake texture normally found in other GF breads; the batter fried fish (p. 59); and the chocolate chip cookies (p. 160).

The equipment and ingredient glossaries provide useful tips and important information for making the recipes successfully. The common sense approach to what is a serious dietary problem for many children and adults alike truly helps to demystify some of the more poorly understood aspects of this disease, and makes it less of a chore and a lot more fun to eat well without wheat and wheat-based products.

        Book Description

IMPRINT TRAINING OF THE NEWBORN FOAL offers an easy-to-follow, step-by-step approach to handling and training newborn foals, as well as numerous techniques and exercises that aid the foal in halter training and later in performing riding maneuvers. Imprinting can be defined as a learning process occurring soon after birth in which a behavior pattern is established. The newborn foal is imprinted to follow and bond with whatever large object looms above it at the time of birth.
Dr. Miller's methods lay the foundation for teaching a horse most of what it will need to know to serve as a useful animal for the rest of its life. Early training can, in an amazingly brief period of time, assure an ideal relationship between horse and human, with the horse bonded and submissive to the human. In addition, the horse will be desensitized to the everyday frightening stimuli that typically elicit a flight reaction in the young horse, and which account for the frequent injuries that afflict horses and the people who work with them.
The book includes nineteen chapters beginning with initial imprinting training, then following with subsequent sessions, halter training, performance basics, response reinforcement, problem prevention, and sections on racehorses, mules, and brood mares.

5 out of 5 stars No horse breeder should be without this book!.......2007-05-15

My sister and I have always wanted to raise foals that weren't like your typical horses, our first foals we did lots to the minute they were born, like touching there ears, everything we could think of that we didn't want them to have issues with-and they're great, but still horses. I came across this book and LOVED IT! Our next years foals were thoroughly imprinted at birth and WOW! Even better than last years foals and we taught them so many more difficult things at birth-like working off their hind-quarters, it's amazing how effective it is. I have bought un-impinted foals in the past, and by a year you have a kicking biteing, don't touch me there yearling to spent hours patiently working with. No my babies come running to me and lick me to death and nothing fazes them!

5 out of 5 stars Way beyond imprinting!!.......2006-04-10

Clear, step by step. Covering all the basics of imprinting & then moving on to first day training techniques that make all the difference for the foal's interaction with human handlers in later days & years to come. Even I can do this, though I am fairly new to horses & especially foaling. Certainly this is a 2 person job, but with an assistant, it goes very smoothly if you have a halter-broke, calm mare. The difference in the foals is really amazing! I see this applying to other animals as well. This is a real gem of a book!

5 out of 5 stars The personality of my horse is testament to this book.......2005-03-30

I bought this book by Robert M. Miller with my very first
miniature horse foal, and it WORKS!!!!
I imprint trained him at birth and some the next day and
everything I did, helped that horse just like he said it would.
His personality is beautiful, he learned the desired responses
well and I know its because of the imprint training. It does not
take much time or effort on your part. I bought a foal that was
not imprint trained and the difference between the two horses
later on is UNBELIEVEABLE. The imprint trained horse is
friendly, obedient, and unafraid of anything ,thanks to this
book. TO me it was well worth the money I paid for it.I expect
2 more foals this year and already have my book ready to
do everything he suggests, I know it will make my life easier
when that little foal becomes a weanling thru full-grown.
For me, it was especially helpful because of my inexperience
with horses but this book would work just as well with the
experienced. It does shape the horses behaviors for LIFE.

3 out of 5 stars Excellant method - if you have help!.......2004-06-01

I bought this book before the birth of my first foal. I thought I had a very good understanding of everything contained in the book. But be forewarned. This is not a something that someone can do alone. You need at least one other experienced horse person to help you. This is an absolute necessity!

There are so many books on interior decoration it can be difficult to choose among them. This book makes it easy. Just say no.

            Pluses:
            None that I can see.

            Minuses:
I do not think the photos in this book save it. I think that the photos are outdated, meaning, they have ugly decorating schemes by way of the 80s, and we are not talking cool retro here. For a book that is suppose to instruct you on color, they sure choose some horrible color combinations.

Recommendation: Don't bother wasting your time with this book.

Better Sources (in no particular order):
All these books have beautiful photos.

            1) Think Color by Tricia Guild - good for inspiration. The book shows a very bold use of color.

            2) Color Your Home Beautiful: Ideas and Solutions - has a variety of well-chosen color combinaions in a variety of styles, dozens of color swatches, useful tips, and quotes from designers.

            3) Color in Your Home by Evelegh - mostly for those of you who like modern country and/or feminine (but not overdone) color schemes. Plus, one of the best primers on how to use color.

            4) The Color Design File by Geddes-Brown - mostly for those of you who like Loft and/or Modern style. Covers the basics, but few useful written tips for design junkies. Very personal writing style.

            3 out of 5 stars Lovely photos.......2002-01-22

Lovely photos of beautifully decorated rooms with lovely colours. Not much information about how to achieve these looks with colour boards - no ideas about how to generate inspiration. Just a pretty book if that's what you want. It's a decent price so if you want pretty then this is what you'll get.

4 out of 5 stars A great place to start.........2000-02-04

So many of us paid no attention in art class to learning and understanding the color wheel, but then it goes much further than that. The book helps you choose your color scheme correctly and assist you in identifying your desire for the warm, cool, contrasting or harmonious color choices. Help and suggestions are provided for the use of textures and how to paint to make your room look wider, larger, higher or even smaller. Much more info is provided than listed. A great investment at a minimal cost.

2 out of 5 stars It's just not my kind of style........2000-01-12

If you're looking to learn how to get ten or fifteen different patterns and colors to work together in one room, and don't mind it if guests ask to wear sunglasses when they visit, then this book is for you. If not, or if you're prone to dizzy spells, pass. In truth, it's just not my kind of style.

5 out of 5 stars An inexpensive book with a wealth of information.......1999-09-15

This is a very useful book. It breaks down the sometimes overwhelming process of choosing colors with clear and helpful instructions. I also appreciated the emphasis on working with what you have, since not all of us can buy all new furniture. For the price, this book is well worth the $$$!!

5 out of 5 stars Love this journal.......2007-06-12

This journal asks the questions you'd love to see your responses to when your children are much older. I really like this journal. Someone gave me one when I had my first child. And I ended up buying one for my second pregnancy. If you enjoy guided journals (where they ask tons of questions throughout the entire 9 months), you'll be pleased with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Monthly Pregnancy Journal.......2006-02-25

I wanted a "pregnancy" journal to document key events during my pregnancy and found exactly what I was looking for in Butterflies & Hiccups. Initially, I considered a "daily" journal but in reviewing some of the pregnancy journals online, I was impressed with Butterflies & Hiccups. It is a "monthly" journal, which really turned out to be perfect... daily would have been overkill, especially since there are many days that pass where there's really nothing to document. This journal has excellent preprinted questions as well a blank page for each month for documenting additional information, perhaps not covered by the preprinted questions. Each month, the journal covers topics such as changes/symptoms, doctor visits, and has a page for placing a photo to track pregnancy progress (and more). It goes up to nine months then continues on to the "Birth" with a checklist of what to pack in the hospital bag, preprinted birth questions, a photo page for picture with baby, a page for baby info (name, date/time of birth, height/length, etc). It also contains a section to document the Baby Shower. The journal contains a 'Baby Keepsake' pocket, perfect for holding ultrasound pictures. There's also an attached ribbon bookmarker so that you can go straight to the page where you left without having to flip through the journal... and it's spiral bound. Highly recommended PREGNANCY journal... this is NOT a BABY journal.

4 out of 5 stars A memorable journal that I will always treasure!!!.......2005-11-02

I was very happy when I finally received my journal. I used it during the full nine months of my pregnancy and it even has a section for after you give birth. This is just so that you can always look back and remember how you felt during every stage of your pregnancy. It does take time to fill out because it is so detailed but that is exactly what I like about it, the details that sometimes we take for granted.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for future pregnancies!.......2005-10-17

The journal was great at asking questions about things to comment on that I would have forgotten to include in just a plan journal. This will be a great resource to have when the next pregnancy comes along.

              5 out of 5 stars Focused Journaling.......2005-05-21

It was such a neat gift to receive Butterflies and Hiccups. I am not one to journal, but with 2 boys and number 3 on the way, it will be helpful to put some of my thoughts down on paper so I will always have the memory. I highly recommend this journal to all pregnant mothers!

5 out of 5 stars Satchmo Trumpets onto the Scene.......2005-02-19

Who knew that someone from such humble beginnings could become one of the greatest trumpeters and entertainers of all time? Well, meet Louis Armstrong. He came from the wrong side of the tracks, in a "red light district." Only in Satchmo: The Genius of Louis Armstrong by Gary Giddens can this be discovered. This book was published by De Capo Press on January 16, 2001. The story is inspirational, showing that anyone can become famous, from the most humble beginnings.

Louis Armstrong's story is an example of the life one can create in America. Being born into such poor conditions, it was amazing he could rise from pennies to diamonds. However, he had another disadvantage, being black. This story demonstrates anyone can be successful, no matter what race or ethnicity.

The story opens with a description of the doonies of New Orleans. The time was 1908, the year of Louis Armstrong's birth. The neighborhood was horrible, nothing but criminals and prostitutes. His own sister became a prostitute. However, even though most in his family were failures, he would show the world that he would not become one.

The following is a list of the main characters:

Louis Armstrong: Jazz trumpeter, and soon to become one of the most unforgettable voices in the world.

Mayann: Louis' older sister, who helped raise him, became a prostitute, but then repented as her brother became more famous.

There are many other characters, including his first wife, Daisy. He later married three more times. His home life was not so hot. He had many fights with his wives, and ended-up leaving each one for another.

Louis' life grew more successful as he moved on. Even when Rock and Roll the big hit on the pop charts, he was able to make a huge comeback. He had many hits, such as "What a Wonderful World." Earlier in his career, he would seldom be allowed to sing. He would play second fiddle to many different bands. Whenever Louis had the chance to play and sing in front of an audience, they adored him. However, his bandleaders always held him back.

The best part of the book was when he finally got his chance. He quit the band he was a member of and started his own group. He recorded his first song, "Lazy River." The people running the studio thought this man will not go anywhere. However the song hit number one. An overnight sensation was born.

Satchmo: The Genius of Louis Armstrong will stay popular because it is a loving portrait of a man who would change the face of music forever. It is a wonderful example of the American Dream, with a happy ending.

5 out of 5 stars Embrace the Genius.......2003-08-25

Shouldn't the term "genius" be reserved for names like Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven? Does the term even come close to fitting Louis Armstrong? Absolutely. If you have any doubt as to Armstrong's place in music history, pick up this book and dive in. Giddins embraces not only the talent and genius of Armstrong, but also the humor, warmth, and generosity of the man. `Satchmo' is not so much a biography of the jazz pioneer as it is a celebration of the man's gift to the world: his music.

Giddins follows Armstrong's early days in New Orleans to his final days of touring and recording. The book focuses heavily on Armstrong's music, but readers won't need a degree in music to understand what Giddins is saying. The author quotes copiously from Armstrong himself, giving us an in-depth look at who Armstrong was and how he thought about music, race relations, friends, wives, and his philosophy on life.

`Satchmo' is a perfect introduction to the wonderful world of Louis Armstrong. If you want to know if a piece of non-fiction works, ask yourself after reading if you'd like to learn more about the subject. I warn you - after reading `Satchmo' you'll want to read more AND listen to each recording mentioned by Giddins...over and over and over. And you'll do it. And the songs won't ever grow stale. And you'll hear something different each time. That's the sign of genius.

5 out of 5 stars written with love and understanding.......2002-12-04

This is one of the best books about Louis I've read and the reason is simple. Giddins clearly lays out the reasons why Pops was the greatest influence on modern music that this country has produced. His love for the man and the music comes through on every page. This is a wonderful almost poetic homage to a great and deserving artist. I loved the Bergreen biography and rated that 5 stars as well. That book is a fine chronological story of a fascinating life. This book is a musical biography that truly captures the essence of Louis Armstrong as well as anything written posthumously can be expected to. If you're a fan of Louis Armstrong you cannot afford to miss this. If you are curious as to why Louis Armstrong has become such an American icon this book will provide the answer.

              5 out of 5 stars LOUIS !!!!!.......2000-07-10

This book is brilliantly put together with great photos, newly found and well-crafted biographical information, and personal writings from Armstrong himself. It's a joy to read from cover to cover. Amazingly, it gets more interesting and fun to read a second, and third time. For any lover of Louis Armstrong this book is a must! Gary Giddins has written a great book. Look for his biography on Bing Crosby (Volume one)!!!

5 out of 5 stars purejoy - like the man himself.......1998-12-21

Louis Armstrong is one of the central figures along with Duke Ellington of Giddins's incredible Visions of Jazz, and that sent me to Satchmo, a mindblowing collection of photographs and a biographical and musical discussion that brings the man and his work to life. Although Giddins covers some of the same ground here as in Visions, it is a far more expansive study built on the idea that Armstrong was at once a great artist and a great entertainer and that his role in one area did not diminish his role in the other. The pictures are remarkable, and numerous excerps from Armstrong's own writing show what a decent and joyful man he was. Highly recommended.
