The Lone Wolf series are great books, I have been reading them since 1993. I have all 20 of them and I have read them all more than once, they are fun to read and play. The only thing is I never heard of the 21st book being released and its been about 3 years since this book has been released.

3 out of 5 stars The Curse of Naar is one of the best Grand Master Adventures.......1999-09-07

American economics and trade screw everything up. Abridged books (espically the Lone Wolf kind) should be sins punashable by eternal damnation. These Grand Master books just aren't the same as the previous unaltered adventures. However, The Curse of Naar is the most thrilling of the series. I only wish I could get my hands on the UNABRIGED version...

5 out of 5 stars An astounding surprise........2003-07-25

I have never been a fan of Klingons, or their claims to honor. I have never been a fan of subplots in holosuites. I have never been a fan of the writing of Diane Carey.

So imagine my surprise when I say, this is not only (by far) the best-written novel by Diane Carey that I have ever read (she only got over-cute with her word choice twice in the entire book; usually, she ruins the effect of her otherwise acceptable writing by trying desperately for "clever" and managing only "wrong", every few pages) but may well be the absolute best Star Trek story I've ever read, by any author, from any series; Worf was handled quite well, his claims that "Klingons don't behave that way; it would be dishonorable" are thoroughly debunked by the fact that the other Klingons do, indeed, behave "that way"; the holodeck subplot involving Picard and Alexander in a holoprogram set during the American Revolutionary War managed, in spite of my general dislike for the holodeck as a plot device, to be quite compelling, and the various dillemmas involving honor were most assuredly not stock situations, but involved a great deal of very careful work on the part of the author to make the ethical questions murky and challenging. The subplot in the holodeck had perhaps the best representation of the legitimate points of view of a loyal British soldier during the Revolution that I've ever seen, and the fact that the focus of that story was on an "aristocratic redcoat", rather than a more standard "valiant rebel" was a marvellous concept.

I cannot say enough about how marvellous this book is.

3 out of 5 stars A lot of Star Trek fiction is rather derivative.........2003-05-28

..most involving either the crew or selected members of it to solve some kind of crisis. And that was the feeling that I was getting when reading this book. The Day of Honor series crosses over four Star Trek series (ST, TNG, DS9, VGR) with a central theme, being the titular Day of Honor, the most important day in the Klingon calendar where "they pay homage to all that makes them Klingon." While Worf is working undercover as part of a planetary criminal network, his son Alexander is exploring one of his human ancestors on the holodeck with Captain Picard in tow. The book switches between the two locales, so there are two stories going on at the same time.

But as I said earlier, a lot of Star Trek fiction just doesn't appeal to me. Maybe because it just keeps getting churned out month after month you get saturated by it. And these big inter-series crossover events happen once a year as well. So I really cannot recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars A must read book for any serious Klingon fan.......2002-12-09

This book does justice to the Day of Honor. It gives you an excellent perspective into Worf in the course of doing so. Some perople think it's too bloody, but what did you expect from a book about Klingons? Peace and love? I think not. If you want a good perspective into Klingons - GET THIS BOOK! You won't be disappointed. Qapla'!

5 out of 5 stars A superb beginning to the Day of Honor series.......2002-06-14

This was a great book that took the reader to an unexpected era. It's quite clear that the author has of love for sailing and historic vessels. She found a wonderful way to intertwine the 18th and 24th centuries. It was great to see Alexander make it into a book as well. Some minor portions of the book were a little hard to swallow, however, if Trek readers want reality they should stick with non fiction. Thank you to Diane Carey for a wonderful story.

1 out of 5 stars Gag me with holodecks and blood..........2000-07-26

This is a book that really didn't need to exist. I was hoping for a great book about Klingons. Instead it portrayed them as a more bloody and savage race than ever before. And the revolutionary war side plot was distracting and unhelpful. It distracted Picard at a time when he could have been saving lives. Don't bother to read this one!

                Book Description

Under pressure to prepare a quick, nutritious dinner? Under pressure to reduce your fat and cholesterol? When the pressure's on for a great vegetarian meal on the run, turn to Lorna Sass's second guide to the safe and delicious use of the pressure cooker.

Following the phenomenal success of Cooking Under Pressure, this collection of recipes dispels the myth of the difficult-to-use pressure cooker -- which is in fact easier and faster than the microwave -- and shows how vegetarian fare can be vibrantly colorful and full of flavor!

Bursting with rich soups, hearty stews and casseroles, zesty curries, and flavor-packed chilis, Great Vegetarion Cooking Under Pressure brings together over 150 recipes, most with cooking times of under ten minutes. Arrive in Provence with a two-minute soupe au pistou laced with garlic and fennel; serve up an elegant zucchini bisque with tomatoes and fresh basil in just five minutes; or prepare a polenta good enough for a palazzo in only ten minutes. There are also scores of perfect vegetable side dish recipes, with an instructive chart detailing how to prepare everything from artichokes to zucchini.

Lorna Sass devotes special attention to grains -- a vital part of the healthy diet -- and shows how brown rice, millet, couscous, quinoa, and bulgur can turn from gourmet store items into staples of your pantry. Whether it's Risotto with Broccoli Rabe and White Beans in five minutes, or Mediterranean Vegetable Couscous in just six, these recipes lock in delicious nutrition without tying up precious time. There's even a section about the splendid desserts that are possible with the pressure cooker, like Banana Pudding Cake and Pumpkin Bread Pudding.

Filled with informative sections about the equipment, ingredients, and language of pressure cooking, suggestions for theme menus, and mail-order resources, this compendium of high-quality, high-fiber, low-fat (and mostly cholesterol-free) dishes will become an essential guide for today's bustling cook.

                4 out of 5 stars pressure cook.......2007-01-11

The book was a Christmas gift for my nephew. I flipped thri it first and the recipes seemed straight forward-a nutritious way to cook. Instructions were uncomplicated; ingredients not too exotic.Would recommend to others.

3 out of 5 stars Good book if you don't care about nutrients.......2007-01-11

The recipes might be good, but when you cook vegetables in such high temperature you're just killing them. You might as well be eating canned soup or other forms of "dead food." To be healthy, you've got to eat food that still has its nutritional value intact. So what should you do instead? Steam your vegetables. Or eat them raw.

5 out of 5 stars If you're vegetarian and own a pressure cooker, look no further.......2006-11-21

I've gotten some good gifts over the years, but getting this book along with a pressure cooker one Christmas ranks right up there as one of the best gifts I've ever received.

If you're new to pressure cooking, this makes a great companion. Sass takes the time to explain it all and includes charts on cooking times for a variety of vegetarian foods. Her speed-soaking method for beans has saved me many times over when I inevitably forgot to soak the beans the night before.

I've owned this book for years, and some of the recipes are still staples in this house (Thai Chickpeas and Garlic Lover's Lentil Soup among others). In fact, we often use this book when we want to "wow" dinner guests. I have really learned a lot from her seasoning techniques.

5 out of 5 stars cooker under pressure.......2006-11-10

excellent! I refer to this book at least 3 times a week.

5 out of 5 stars Creative, healthy, delicious, fast and economical recipes!.......2006-10-13

I am not a vegetarian, but I like to make vegetarian dishes for health and economical reasons. I also find the pressure cooker to be a wonderful time-saver. I already owned two of Sass' PC cookbooks when I bought this one, and this is the best one yet! Sass opened my eyes to easy, quick and creative vegetarian cooking. Except for a handful of exotic dishes, the recipes use regular every-day fresh ingredients, and in interesting (and delicious!) combinations. If you think meatless cooking is just tofu and seaweed, buy this book!!
                Just a couple of caveats:
A common technique of Sass' is to garnish a dish with a fresh ingredient (such as chopped parsley or cilantro, or green onion). Don't skip this step, it is very important for improving color and flavor of pressure-cooked food. I found these details were what took a dish from good to great.
Another common technique is to "perk up" flavors at the end of cooking with an acidic ingredient, usually wine vinegar. I personally found the dishes tastier without this addition, and I would suggest tasting first before adding (or add a bit to just a small portion) to see what your own preference is.
My only complaint is that the brown rice recipes do not save any time -- between 25 min cooking and then 20 min natural pressure release, you can just make the recipe in a regular pot. (If you soak brown rice for a few hours first, this cuts cooking time down to 25 min total, using a regular pot -- I haven't tried in a pressure cooker so I don't know how it affects times there.)
Bottom line -- whether you are a vegetarian looking for new recipes or a sworn meat-eater interested in great side dishes, BUY THIS BOOK!

4 out of 5 stars Very good book for beginners.......2007-08-19

Very good for beginners. Covers all important topics. Very simple language, without technical jargon which is often overwhelming people who just starting with hobby. Very nice stocking guide and chapter about biotops which is not found often in similar position.

I recommend it to anyone who thinks to start with reefkeeping hobby.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-10

Loved it! Has some of the best reefing information available, without the over-technical mumbo jumbo! The stocking guide is excellent; just lacking on a few species.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, detailed, practical.......2006-01-09

One can appreciated the authors' long experience with marine aquaria who elegantly and with simple language explained larger biological concepts yet provide detailed instructions on how do to what and why. Very inspiring are the suggested biotopes that include among others "seagrass aquarium", "reef gorge aquarium", "pizza anemone aquarium", "rubble zone aquarium" as well as the standard reef tank. These are refreshing ideas that are needed with the current predominance of grocery store shelf-like stocked, overcrowded best-of-the-month SPS tanks. Also contains a comprehensive guide about most creatures possible in a reef tank and essentially makes e.g. Sprung's "Quick" guides unnecessary in one's library.

5 out of 5 stars Think out of the box.......2005-05-07

You won't have to go over the ammonia cycle again here, though there is enough info to get you started. The title is a great indication of what to expect. This book is about thinking out of the box in aquarium keeping and planning them correctly.

My favorite section talks about ideas for aquariums and how when we start, we usually try to replicate a hodgepodge thrown together because we want a little of everything instead of a real underwater scene which could be much more interesting. This book has opened my eyes to new planning possibilities, I wouldn't have thought of otherwise.

It has a great section on all types of fishes, invertebrates, cnidaria, etc... of options for choices with clear and concise care guide and potential pitfalls.

There is one or two things that might surprise if you have aquariums in the Americas, such as stating that 10% of water changed per year is reasonable. Maybe very large aquarium, but I change that per week. Then again, only because I have read elsewhere and heard advice to do so even though it does seem to make sense to me.

I wish I had found this book before planning my current aquarium, but it has certainly gotten me thinking about the next one. I recommend this as an additional starter book (perhaps to accompany Paletta's New Marine Aquarium) or for anyone who knows the simple basics and wants interesting new ideas to rehash the passion. Without question, worth it.

5 out of 5 stars another great microcosum publication.......2004-03-29

an exalent read for beginers! covers many important aspects of reef keeping in understandable languege.

however, there are a couple problems. 1st, since its such a recent publication it has some confusing types and errors. they arnt terrible but i can see them confusing some beginers. 2nd, they have a couple places where they say somthing like "this is an important topic but its beyond this book to explain".

still, its a great starting place for beginier marine aquarists.

                    Book Description

The Haida and the Tlingit people of the northern Northwest Coast are renowned for their outstanding arts, among them elegant spruce-root basketry. Prized by non-Native collectors for more than a century, these finely woven creations are found in museums and private collections all over the world. Despite the continued popularity of these baskets, there is little published about them.

Sharon Busby examines the history and evolution of spruce-root basketry, starting with the archaeological evidence of baskets older than the Egyptian pyramids. She describes traditional uses and forms, as well as changes in style when basketry became part of the souvenir trade that developed in the late 1880s. She also describes the heroic efforts of 20th-century Haida and Tlingit teachers who kept the ancient traditions alive and the contemporary weavers who have revitalized the art.

Spruce-Root Basketry of the Haida and Tlingit provides the largest collection of color images of Haida and Tlingit baskets ever published, many of them for the first time. The skillful photography of Ron Reeder presents a visual history of spruce-root basketry from the 1850s to the present. He captures the lustrous patina of the old baskets made for traditional Native uses as well as the impressive variety of baskets made for sale in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Photographs also portrays the baskets made today by weavers who are a living part of a long tradition.

Historical photographs enhance the account of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and provide a visual counterpoint to the vibrant color images of the baskets today. Drawings by Margaret Davidson explain the complex weaving techniques used in these baskets for millennia. The combination of compelling images and informative text makes this book a welcome addition to the literature of basketry and Northwest Coast art for students, collectors, and admirers of this art form.

I bought this for my 5 year-old niece who loves Futurama and once it arrived learned that the paper doll outfits were, as the cover says, "sextacular"! Fortunately my brother & his wife have a sense of humor and my niece enjoyed it anyway. Like most Futurama products it looks really cool. I just didn't know it would be so sextacular.

This is an absolutely amazing narrative, of the growth of an individual from the most brutish of slave lives to a free man who took pride in his work and his mind. While told as a story, this book is actually an essay on personal struggle and development: to respect himself, to change his circumstances, to be re-born. At that, it is extremely powerful and moving. The reader empathizes completely with his rage, his striving to grow, and his awakening. He came to the point where he would rather fight back than die slowly, never to be dominated in his spirit.

But it also points to the effect of slavery on the owners. While there are the standard cruel and selfish ones, who are attempting to "break" his spirit in order to domesticate him, the story of how it twists the souls of essentially good people that is the most interesting and shocking. It is like a sickness, their total and unresponsible power, that extingusihes their empathy and replaces it with the most horrible selfishness, as they debase themselves with cruelty. You get the whippings and routine humilations, but also what that does to the perpetrators.

THere are also many interesting asides, which are often philosophical. He points out the hypocrisy of southern christians, who make the worst and most cruel and self-righteous slavers, all while justifying their behavior by the bible. He also recounts how he expected that the "refinement" of the southern gentleman and their leisure would be impsooble in the North, which he pictured as poor as the non-slave holding population in the South - but he discovers an entirely different kind of economic life, in which men worked and prospered and deveoped themselves even more than what he had observed on plantations. But the most important thing is his recounting of his inner journey, which was encouraged by his learning to read as a way to overcome the ignorence that made for "contented slaves."

There is so much food for thought on the human spirit as well as wonder at how the US has evolved. Highest recommendation.
