Book Description

Fiction.Caribbean Studies. Asian American Studies. In this award-winning collection of stories, Sasenarine Persaud presents us with his unique vision of lives in North America and the Caribbean. The stories are probing, all threaded together by the ancestral India of the protagonist's imagination and a style inspired by ancient storytelling tradition. "Here almost inscrutable demotic slang, once penetrated, reinforces Persaud's social commentary and nimbly pits self-ironizing postmodernism against the timeless values of narrative" -- The Globe and Mail.

Having similar background & experienced "emigrating" experiences to Canada & US, I connected easily to the experiences of the immigrant. So little has been written about Guyana, its people & its trials thus far. This is insightful, informative, descriptive, humourous,& moving, tinged with exotic Indian flavor & romance.

4 out of 5 stars Madame Castafiore descends upon Captain Haddock's home.......2003-05-24

I have to admit that after going to the Moon and rescuing his friend Chang in Tibet, the stay at home Tintin adventure "Les Bijoux de la Castafiore" ("The Castafiore Emerald") is relatively tame. It begins with Tintin and Captain Haddock out for a walk and discovering a band of gypsies camped near the rubbish dump. This offends the good captain, who offers the gypsies the use of a large meadow near his hall. However, no good deed goes unpunished and he receives a telegram announcing the imminent arrival of Bianca Castafiore, the Milanese Nightingale. Meanwhile, the broken step on the front staircase earns Haddock a badly sprained ankle and the opportunity to roll around the adventure in a wheelchair. The diva and her entourage then descend upon the hall, literally adding insult to injury by giving the captain the gift of a parrot.

As Castafiore repeatedly points out, she has brought along her jewels, including an emerald given the signora by the Maharajah of Gopal. The gypsy fortuneteller had already predicted the theft of the jewels and we expect her prophecy to come true, even though Castafiore is constantly yelling about her jewels missing. But you know that sooner or later this is going to come to pass and then it will be up to our intrepid reporter to solve the case and save the day. Meanwhile, Captain Haddock's life continues to be a string of minor misfortunes and misunderstands thanks to Castafiore, Professor Tournesol, the parrot, Dupont and Dupond, and the unwillingness of the local repairman to come out and fix that step.

"Les Bijoux de la Castafiore" derives its comedy from the clash of characters with Tintin staying out of the way for the most part. Of course, by this time in the series Hergé is completely comfortable with his cast of characters, which shows in the interplay, although I admit the diva is not my cup of tea. I just happen to really like the way Hergé represents other lands, so having him stay around the captain's house just seems to me to be an interlude from the main adventures. Still, "Les Bijoux de la Castafiore" is well worth the read Hergé does a delightful take on that new fangled invention, the television. Final Note: I like Hergé's quaint cover, with Castafiore singing for the cameras while a smiling Tintin reminds us to be quiet during the performance.

4 out of 5 stars The Castafiore Emerald.......2000-07-03

This is probably the least well known and appreciated of Tintin's adventures. Tintin and Captain Haddock receive a visit from the overbearing opera singer/diva Bianca Castafiore. Many humorous incidents ensue as Bianca is hounded by the press and ends up losing her fabulous emerald. The situation is complicated by the arrival of gypsies to Captain Haddock's home whose presence arises suspicion over the disappearance of Bianca's jewels.

This is the only Tintin adventure where Tintin does not journey to distant lands for his adventures - the action is all sentenced around his home. As a result there is not the normal pace and excitment normally present in Tintin and perhaps this is why the book is not so popular with younger readers. However the story is still excellent in a more subtle way. Firstly the handling of the gypsies in the book is very sensitive and not prejudiced which is certainly not in keeping with the period in which the book was written. The gypsies are not depicted as a band of thieving rogues but a group of people abandoned by all sections of society. Herge plays very well on the inherent prejudices of the characters of the book very well throughout to give the gypsies a sympathetic representation. In this respect the book is excellent for young children since it will give them a broader view of the many peoples of the world. Secondly the subject of press intrusion is dealt with very well throughout the book. The visiting opera singer Bianca Castafiore is followed by journalists and her equivocal attitude to the press is hilarious - she embraces one magasine yet hates another simply because she didn't like one of the pictures of her which was published in it. Then of course there is the actual mystery of the emerald. Unlike other Tintin books the main theme seems to be fairly trifling and merely a source of continuity for the book. The reader is not engaged by the emerald's disappearance and in the end the thief turns out to be ..... (I won't spoil it). The illustrations in the book are particularly detailed and lush. This was Herge's ninteenth Tintin book and thus his style is established and refined as are his racial prejudices. In fact by now Herge was a champion of the anti-racism cause.

The Castafiore Emerald is probably one of Herge's most mature works. Although there is a story, this is inconsequential when compared to the other racial and political issues and the rich characters. Because of this fact the book would probably not be so engaging for younger readers but would certainly be diverting for older children and indeed educational in many ways.

5 out of 5 stars Another Herge masterpiece.......2000-07-03

This is a classic chapter in Tintin's life - or more to the point: Captain Haddock's life, for his relationship with Castafiore is explored over the main plot - a mystery surrounding her lost jewels. The artwork is, as always, superb and the subtleties endless. The disillusioned accompanist is a great touch, and we can share the Haddock's discomfort at having to spend countless days in his once peaceful abode, at the mercy of Castafiore's shrill voice. It's great to go back to the original French versions - though the English translations are fine, noone can fully replicate the original intention of Herge, the master.

3 out of 5 stars interesting.......2007-01-14

while i read alot of manga... really have to find that manga sugar-daddy... this one was okay... i get the gothic part... i get the change to a girl part... however when i get to the point were i cannot tell who is the good guy and who is the bad guy, i am confused... the art makes a lot of the characters look a lot alike... but other then that the story is not bad...

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful art, confusing story.......2006-03-30

Let me start by saying that Park Sang-Sun is my favourite artist, and you can see her talent by flipping through the pages of Les Bijoux.

However, cramming such a detailed and immense world/story into five volumes was not a great idea.

This first volume does a decent job of introducing the world of Les Bijoux, though I would say that it's a bit overwhelming and unclear at times. For a first-time reader I'd suggest reading the first TWO volumes to get a grasp on whether you want to continue or not.

For fans of gorgeous men and a new style of fantasy, this series is for you. However, some might be put off by the sometimes intense violence and sexual themes. (Definitely NOT for younger readers!)

note: the pictures that Amazon provides are actually from vol. 4.

5 out of 5 stars a good yaoi .......2006-02-12

I liked this series but do have one thing to critisize. Ok, the first book kina jumps into the plot and its a lot of stuff to handle at one time. Other than that, I thought the artwork is fantastic, the rest of the books (and this one) is great, and the I like the whole pretty boy love story. *sigh* The most emotional thing about this series is the changes the characters go through in the books. By the last one they are totally different people, which isn't always a bad thing.

5 out of 5 stars Jewelicious!!.......2005-12-07

I have the whole collection and boy do I ever love it!! The first time I noticed the first volume while looking for another yaoi,I wasn't sure for the name threw me off but after I read one chapter I know it was a must buy, must have. The artwork totally rocks!!!!! I began to bond with the characters as the story prolonged. Lapis-Lazuli was my favorite but also Diamond. I know he was not all that bad but you gotta give it to him all he wanted was his jewel. The ending was oh boy I bawled through the whole 5th book man I didn't think I was going to buy it but I did. But it was an awesome the story itself was full many a meaning but I let you decide what they are.

Oh I have the Tarot Cafe and Ark Angel both done by Sang-sun Pak boy I love her artwaork I just can't get enough. I drew Diamond, Lapis, and Panther and placed them on my folder.

5 out of 5 stars Art and Depth a Perfect Gem.......2004-08-02

I've read a lot of mixed reviews on this series and I'm surprised. I collect a lot of gothic and bishonen mangas and this one is at the top of my list. The art is truly breathtaking, and once you "get" the story the depth of characterization and plot is fascinating. The true test of a good manga is if you want to re-read the stories again, and if you can't wait for the next book. This one passes the test in spades. It is not a light read, though. You discover that even the worst-seeming villains, like real life, have a depth of humanity and even redemption. The quest for power, battle techniques and sad history truly allows you to feel for every character, even the minor ones. Instead of finding it confusing, I enjoyed the detailed plot set-up in the first and second book. Book four throws a few more sub-plots into the mix and I'm not sure how every detail will wrap up in the final book but I'm certainly looking forward to it. Get the first two books, and get caught up in the world of Les Bijoux...you won't regret it.

            Book Description

The woods of Versailles, 1648: a little girl meets a mysterious old man, and the dark pact forged between them will prove to dramatically influence the affairs of a nation.

Such intrigue defines the life of Bijoux Cinq-Mars. The daughter of 17th century Paris' most celebrated prostitute and a noble father whose short career includes the bedding of a king, the child born of scandalous liaison is raised in a rarefied world inhabited both by scholars and scoundrels, princes and poseurs. A world of masquerade and murder, wickedness and wonder, all embodied in a society destined to herald a Sun King.

This memoir of necromancy, political intrigue, and personal redemption is a chronicle detailing a young woman's rise from courtesan's salon to the unlikely appointment as Royal Astrologer; a story of Truth and Love overcoming all odds. An unforgettable array of brilliant characters propel the pages of an account portraying one of the most elegant, albeit dangerous, periods of history.

"To learn the Secret of the Ages, she lost everything and found...herself."

A page turner from beginning to end. I love this book! The heroine, Bijoux Cinq-Mars, is a compelling character because she fails, yet admits her failure openly and that is winning. That she sees so deeply into her own faults and turns to others in desperation makes you cheer her on. That she expresses such love and gratitude for those who helped her is touching. That she grows and finally succeeds is inspiring.

1 out of 5 stars Who keeps tamarind paste?.......2007-01-14

Interesting recipes and some good ideas for emergency preparation. Not realistic in terms of ingredients. If a tornado just blew through and there was no electricity, I'm sure I would not be using fresh citrus juices, fresh ginger, chardonnay vinegar and tamarind paste. I happen to be a great cook but I generally go get ingredients like that, not stock them.

                  3 out of 5 stars A definite MAYBE..........2006-08-28

Interesting recipes that I may actually use, but as far as cooking after a natural disaster... the ingredients are not things I would normally have sitting around my kitchen.

2 out of 5 stars Pass on this one.......2006-08-10

I was very disappointed in this book. I was hoping for recipes that appear somewhat familiar. My family would be more traumatized if I tried to feed them hearts of palm and guava nectar then 2 dinners in a row of beanie weenies. The appendix charts repeats information freely found on many disaster survivor web sites. Bottom line, instead of buying this book, use the money to add to your food storage.

3 out of 5 stars Great for Florida, but--.......2006-07-22

This book was written by a Floridian, and there are several recipes in this book that would only do for Floridians. My power is more likely to go out during a blizzard or ice storm than a hurricane, which means that avocados and fresh herbs are out of the question. ("Quick, run to the store for avocados and cilantro! There's a blizzard coming!")

5 out of 5 stars Great help for pre-storm planning.......2006-06-20

We had Ms Nikolopoulos speak at our public library here in Broward County, Florida (she lives close to us). Everyone enjoyed her presentation very much. She demonstrated three of her recipes for our audience and let us taste the results. We had the Vichyssoise, the Chipotle Chicken Soft Tacos and the Peach-Raspberry dessert (last dessert in that section). They were VERY good and were so simply made. Normally just saying 'chipotle' will put me off and I probably wouldn't have made the dish--that would have been a mistake because it was really good!
I can speak from experience that her recipes are delicious and the suggestions for planning and pre-purchasing are very good. Since other parts of the country can experience power outtages too, folks might consider buying this one!

This is one of two books I purchased for my dad who is a new goat owner. He has read this book completely and uses it as a reference on a regular basis.

This book gives me the basic information on raising my Nigerian Dwarf wether and doeling. Having raised horses, dogs, and more in my life time, these little kids are a unique species and need special information. This book is a great start.

Any who would own a goat must have THE GOAT HANDBOOK as a home reference: written by two DVMs, THE GOAT HANDBOOK covers everything from the initial purchase and housing to health and behavior, including care of pastures and meadows so goats stay healthy. Color photos peppered throughout add interest, but THE GOAT HANDBOOK is primarily an owner's care book and will appeal to any goat owner who needs a basic reference at hand.

2 out of 5 stars how are goats kept in Germany, but not in the US.......2006-04-30

This book is great if you want to know how to raise goats in Europe, please don't get me wrong, I am from Germany and I have nothing against how things are done there, but the way the book discribes the keeping of goats is not the way it is done in the U.S. There is a big different in how goats are raised for meat versus how people raise them for show/milk or even just a for pets with or without horns. No real serious breeder of a Dairy goat in the U.S. would keep horns on a goat or even let the kids nurse. On the other hand most Meat goat breeder will not dehorn their goat and are upset if they have a goat they have to bottlefeed. There are many different ways to keep goats in the U.S. and they are not adequately discribed in this book.

Even thought there is a part where they discribe the "Goats of the world" the breeds discribed in the "Buying Goats" do not represent the popular goat breeds available in the U.S. For example for the choice of milking goat, they only give a choice of white Saanen and colored Saanen and no other breed is recomended. Yes, one really popular goat breed for milk in the U.S. is the white Saanen goat and in the U.S., the white ones are just called Saanen and the colored Saanen are called Sable, and Sable goats are not that easy to come by in the U.S. The most popular goat breed known for its really good tasting milk, the Anglo Nubian goat (usually just called Nubian goat), is not mentioned in this part of the book. Also in the U.S. the climate can be from tropical to very cold and some goats are better suited for colder or warmer climate and this is also not covered in the "Buying Goats" chapter, since the climate in Germany where this book is written doesn't differ in termperature like it does in the U.S.

In Germany not many different types of medication are available over the counter and there you have to go to the vet to get most medications, and here in the U.S. you can get a lot of things you would need to treat the most common illnesses right in your local feed store.

The same with dehorning and castratin goats, the animal protection laws are a lot stricter in Europe and dehorning and castrating of goats is usually not done by the farmer in Germany, but taken to a veterinarian. Here in the U.S., of course you can take your goat to the vet for this, but most breeders will do it themselves.

There is a lot of good information in this book, that is the same in all countries like how goats will rather eat weeds/trees instead of grass or how they digest their food. But many other things, are just not the same in the U.S.

I could go on and on how things normally done in the U.S. are not discribed, but I would have to write my own book to cover all of it. The bottom line is, I do not think that this is the right book to get for a novice that doesn't know what is available in the feed stores or wants to know about what goat to get if they live in the U.S. But I do think it is a good book to get if you already have goats and would like to know how other countries take care of goats or like to read some information that you look at with a open mind and pick what might work for you.

From the supplier: Dairy goats provide homesteaders with milk, an important food group. They take up less space than cows and require less work. Beginners should examine different breeds and select the one that best meets their needs. Goats need water-tight housing, water and good feed.

                        Book Description

A stunningly illustrated look at a strikingly diverse tradition, Biedermeier to Bauhaus is the only book available—in English or German—on its subject. From the Renaissance to the early 20th century, curator Sigrid Sangl traces the complex but characteristic interior design styles found throughout Germany, literally opening the doors to a variety of exceptional interiors.

Most of the featured residences—townhouses, royal palaces, artists' studios, and rural retreats—have never before been photographed. Barbara and René Stoeltie's sumptuous full-color images, many specially commissioned for this book, convey both the grand scale and the distinguishing details of each style: 16th-century wood-paneled parlors with furniture in matching inlaid patterns; elaborate Baroque wall paintings inspired by exotic plant forms; sturdy, stalwart Biedermeier tables and chairs; the sinuous, ornamental curves of Jugendstil; and the simple, streamlined functionalism of the Bauhaus. Reaching from the Baltic to the Alps, Biedermeier to Bauhaus includes maps and a list of places to visit.

I don't know what the previous reviewers were critiquing-- what follows is about S Sangl's brilliant and unique book. It is safe to say that in every respect -- text, photos, and production values --- this unique volume fulfills its mission to present the tradition of German(ic) interior design at the highest level. Although the photos are true 'eye candy', this book is intended as serious discourse and rises far above the typical coffee table ballast.

                              Book Description

The sequel to Remembering Slavery, a groundbreaking collection of interviews about the segregation-era South.

Described by Publishers Weekly as the "viscerally powerful...compilation of firsthand accounts of the Jim Crow era," Remembering Jim Crow is now available in paperback. Based on interviews collected by the Behind the Veil Project at Duke University's Center for Documentary Studies, this remarkable book presents the most extensive oral history ever of African American life under segregation.

Citing Remembering Jim Crow as a Best Book of the Year for 2001, Library Journal wrote that "[when] the segregation era finally passes from living memory, students of its history will look to sources like this for a shivering dose of reality and inspiring stories of everyday resistance." In vivid, compelling accounts, men and women from all walks of life tell how their day-to-day activity was subjected to profound and unrelenting racial oppression. At the same time, Remembering Jim Crow is a testament to how black southerners fought back against the system, raising children, building churches and schools, running businesses, and struggling for respect in a society that denied them the most basic rights. 50 black-and-white photographs.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Read.......2004-02-25

This is an interesting angle to present a sad era in America's history. This book does not give a history book type of fact presentation, it presents the facts from the people who actually experienced it.

This is a vital book if for only one reason, so that the children born after this era know what it was like so it is never repeated.

I enjoyed the oral history that is presentated and I would recommend this book if you want a greater understanding of this time.

5 out of 5 stars Remembering Jim Crow.......2003-04-21

REMEMBERING JIM CROW is a colletion of first hand accounts of life in the Jim Crow south. The stories are compelling and at the same time sad.

The stories create the atmosphere that one is sitting in one of the elderly story tellers living room listening to them.

This book is especially worthwhile for non-African-Amercians readers, because virtually all African-Americans that have roots in the south, know these stories all too well.

                              5 out of 5 stars A necessary book.......2002-10-08

This is an absolutely superb book, comprised of recollections of the Jim Crow years in the form of oral histories. It can be read through, or picked up at any part. There is an appropriate amount of historical introduction to each chapter.
This material needs to be read, and remembered. There was a long time in our history when, although there was no more slavery, African Americans were treated as a separate serf class, under constant pressures and reminders of their lower status. Whites used pervasive legal and social downward pressures to keep African Americans out of an equal education, and equal access to public facilities, much less the right to equal jobs and the right to vote -- and then claimed that African Americans' lack of achievement was a racial fault. If an African American violated one of the many social taboos, the sanctions ranged from a beating, to loss of job, and even being lynched.
While whites benefited from Jim Crow, the whites, also, were trapped in the system. They were also forced to abide by legal segregation, and were subject to social pressure if they were too liberal (being called "n* lover," "white n*," etc.).
What led to the mindset that the end of slavery should lead to continued legal and social oppression of African Americans? It was part of white American culture. Lincoln himself said that he was not "in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry.... [T]here must be the position of superior and inferior. I am as much as any other man in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race." In 1877, Rutherford B. Hayes traded the end of southern post-war Reconstruction for the electoral votes he needed to win the presidency. Southern states then were free to institute the Jim Crow system.
I believe we are more subject to peer pressure than we would like to believe. Although reviewer McInerney asserts that "no civilized person" would benefit from Jim Crow, I feel many otherwise-good people were trapped and/or blinded by their own interests and surroundings. When allowed, and even encouraged, their evil side showed itself. On this topic, see John Griffin's _Black Like Me_, on the different faces that whites showed to other whites, and to African Americans.
While we are certain that we wouldn't go back to that system, we shouldn't be so sure that we, also, wouldn't be trapped by it if we were born into it. Consider that Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy (to a large extent) didn't take effective action to end segregation.
This book is excellent. Those dreadful and shameful times -- and the vestiges which still continue -- must not be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Reveals how blacks fought against the system.......2002-04-10

This slipcased book and 2-cd set supplements the written word with oral history, gathering the voices of men and women who were firsthand witnesses to segregation in the south. Stories by men and women from all walks of life reveal how blacks fought against the system, built communities, and ran businesses in a society which denied them basic rights. Remembering Jim Crow offers the reader a comprehensive, involving, highly recommended presentation.

5 out of 5 stars Slavery The Sequel.......2002-03-14

Any illusions about the freedom and equality that were alleged to have been given to African Americans in this country following the Civil War were just that, illusions. The reality of America's version of Apartheid was legitimized in 1896 in the United States Supreme Court with the case of Plessy vs. Ferguson. When the de-facto segregation that Plessy allowed was added to the de jure laws that followed, whatever emancipation had been promised was firmly repudiated. It is even legitimate to go back to 1877 when Rutherford B. Hayes and his party sold out, and swapped the presidency for the removal of federal troops from the south.

"Remembering Jim Crow", is a brilliant collection of first hand accounts of life under Jim Crow by those who were victimized by its laws. A large cast collected these verbal accounts over several years, and they accomplished no less than the preservation of a sinister part of this country's history. A time that W.E.B. Dubois characterized as, "living behind the veil". Combined with the book, "At The Hands Of Person's Unknown", which I commented extensively on, these two books, and if you choose the accompanying CD of the interviews, provides a wide, if horrific view of these eight decades.

These testimonies are also notable for the speakers who identify by name the people and families that victimized them. This is not ancient history that many would like to forget. These people who survived and speak of Jim Crow are alive, and so a presumption that their tormentors are alive is reasonable. The end of the book includes portions of a documentary that was made as part of this project with National Public Radio. Happily some of the whites that were interviewed in Iberia Perish in Louisiana remember and look with regret on what they did and did not do. Their willingness to speak on the record is admirable. But lest anyone think that all is solved there are also people who went on the record bemoaning their never having enjoyed the privileges that Jim Crow gave whites. A man named Barrow expressed himself thusly, "That was awful nice, you know, you'd go hunting, "Boy clean those ducks", you know, "Skin that dear", uh, "Shine my shoes". I believe I could have gone for that. Yeah I think you could have too".

No Mr. Barrow, no civilized individual from any state could, "have gone for that". However I am sure that many appreciate your confirmation that even now, ignorance, arrogance, and racism are alive and well.
