Home Winemaking Step-by-Step

Book Description
Written expressly for beginning and advanced amateurs, this guide explores home winemaking in practical terms, focusing on the latest fermentation techniques of both red and white wine grapes. Detailed information on equipment, supplies, and mistakes to avoid will make getting started easy. Advanced winemakers will appreciate full explanations of sophisticated topics such as malolactic fermentation, extended maceration sparkling wines, and chemical testing. Also included in the new edition is information on the use of oak barrels. Unlike other winemaking manuals, this is devoted entirely to wine made with grapes instead of fruit wines.Customer Reviews:

Very good starter text for the budding winemaker.......2003-10-08
Iverson discusses red and white wines, fermenting, aging, racking, and various testing procedures that educate the reader on the chemical properties of wine. He discusses oak and gives fine recommendations based on his valuable experience. For those interested in delving into a more complex process, malolactic fermentation is also discussed in detail. A troubleshooting section is added in case problems occur, and he even discusses the bottling process. This glosses over a sampling of sections.
It is a quick read, which is nice for those just getting started. It's not presented in an overwhelming manner. When you need it as a reference, each section is short enough the read in one sitting. Locating pertinent data is easy.
The book does not get too in-depth into any one concept. It's more of a tutorial to the winemaking process, well balanced in its coverage. For seasoned winemakers looking for more detail, this may not be the book for you.
I still use it as a reference, but now that I'm into my second batch of wine, I'm looking for more detail. As a result, I'm buying another winemaking book to supplement the information contained in this book. I'm seeking more detail to answer more complex questions.
If you're a beginning winemaker looking for a book to help guide you, Iverson's book won't lead you in a wrong direction.

Too brief to give the beginner any confidence.......2003-02-11
Sadly, the coverage of the principles and techniques was too brief, particularly with regard to timing. I am still at a bit of a loss as to how long one should allow the aerobic ferment to take place, how long for the anaerobic format and so on. I think I'll be getting another book that focuses more on technique before I make my first attempt.
This classic guided three generations from crop to wine........1998-06-18
When it first appeared, the layout of "First Steps in Winemaking" was quite unique. After an admirable discussion of the basic principles of home winemaking, Berry then presented his recipes on the basis of the month in which the principal ingredients are readily available at market or are typically harvested in the British home garden. There are three things wrong with this format.
Firstly, citing harvest months for various ingredients geographically limits the accuracy of the format. Harvest times for any crop will vary greatly around the world, but they can differ from Britain's calendar by six months for gardeners in, say, Australia. Berry's treatment works fine in the British Isles and many other places, but certainly this is not universally so. In his later books, Berry abandoned the calendar-month format of "First Steps...."
Secondly, at least in developed countries, there is no longer a need to be tied to calendar-month availability of ingredients. Advances in cargo transport and refrigeration over the past 50 years have made dependency on local crops a thing of the past. Almost any ingredient can be found in the modern supermarket or produce center at any time.
Thirdly, Berry's presentation of recipes by month results in dependence on the index in order to find recipes for a particular ingredient. This is perhaps the greatest shortcoming of the book's layout. An alphabetical listing of recipes, as he used in subsequent books, would have been more convenient.
In defense of the author, however, I must point out that Berry never anticipated his book would have worldwide appeal. Nor, it would seem, that it would remain popular for so long. Certainly he would not have quoted prices for ingredients and supplies had he suspected as much.
Are these shortcomings fatal? Not in the least! This is still the classic reference to the subject and ought to be in every winemaker's library. Indeed, if you could only buy one book on the subject, only Terry Garey's "The Joy of Home Winemaking" could challenge "First Steps...." to a coin toss.
Buy it. Read it. Make wine. You'll love yourself for it.

The Adventures of Hamza: Painting and Storytelling in Mughal India
John William Seyller , W. M. Thackston , and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery (Smithsonian Institution) Manufacturer: Freer Gallery of Art ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 1898592233 |
Book Description
A fantastic adventure story, based loosely on the exploits of Hamza, an uncle of the prophet Muhammad, who travelled throughout the world spreading the doctrines of Islam, The Adventure of Hamza--also known as Hamzanama--tells of encounters with giants, demons, and dragons; of abductions and hair-raising chases; and of believers, as well as those who resisted the truth. The excitement of these ancient tales was best captured in public recitations at coffeehouses from Iran to northern India. Each oration was given a particular flavor by the storyteller, who departed freely from the written text, which itself varies in composition and structure from manuscript to manuscript. An illustrated version of the Hamzanama was commissioned early in the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, in the second half of the 16th century, by the teenage emperor himself. Consisting of 1400 paintings of an unusually large format, it was one of the earliest products of the royal Mughal painting atelier, and perhaps the most ambitious. The enormous size of the illustrations, which are nearly two feet high each, can be explained by their role in complementing the recitations; their sometimes broad and animated style conveys the vigor of the tales. Just over a tenth of the 1400 paintings from Akbar's commission survive today, and this publication of The Adventures of Hamza brings together 60 of the greatest of these works from collections all over the world, and places them alongside new translations of the related text passages.

New Livingroom Design

Book Description
Traditionally, the living room has been the domestic setting for social gatherings and the reception of guests. Over the last decades however, it has experienced many changes with respect to aesthetics and use. One example is the incorporation of movies at home and other technological systems devoted to leisure that have revolutionized the layout and forms acquired by furnishings that have always formed part of this room. In addition, the contemporary living room is also a place in which to rest, relay and enjoy personal hobbies, For this reason, one of the most common and popular trends consists of dividing the living room into two areas: one designated to the more conventional entertainment of conversation and reading and the other devoted to offering the pleasures made possible by state-of-the-art technology.

Warhol: Paintings and Sculpture 1964-1969, Vol. 2 (2 Vol. Set): The Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonne
Georg Frei , and Neil Printz Manufacturer: Phaidon Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0714840874 |
Book Description
Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is arguably the most iconic figure in twentieth century art, an enigmatic personality who not only altered the definition of art itself but also in his wake left a vast and staggeringly complex record of his activities. Warhol's archive consists not only of his artworks but also 1,500 cardboard boxes, flat files, and trunks filled with source material, memorabilia, correspondence, and junk mail. When the catalogue raisonn+ is complete, it will constitute an indisputable record of the artist's paintings, drawings, and sculptures #151; some 15,000 works produced by the artist between 1948 and 1987, the year of his death. Volume 2 documents the artist's paintings, sculpture, and installations made between 1964 and 1969, the important period known as "The Factory Years," when Warhol began to acquire Pop Art fame as well as a cadre of collaborators and hangers-on #151; all of which made "The Factory" into one of the most mythologized artist's studios ever, and Warhol's work at this time emblematic of his career. This volume documents 23 series and more than 1,400 individual works, including the well-known series Thirteen Most Wanted Men, the box sculptures, approximately 300 works in the Jackie series, and the 1964 and 1964-65 Flowers series, among others. As in Volume 1, Volume 2 includes a fascinating collection of source material #151; in particular rare studio photographs taken by Billy Name-Linich, who became the Factory's first de facto photographic historian. In this volume editors Georg Frei and Neil Printz focus on Warhol's serial production, analyzing the evolution of Warhol's working methods and the growing relationship between Warhol's exhibitions and his studio production. They establish a chronology for the works of this period, many of which have been difficult to locate and date due to their seriality. Their text provides both a compelling overview and unparalleled detail of an endlessly fascinating life and career. The project is co-sponsored by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in New York and Thomas Ammann Fine Art in Zurich.Customer Reviews:

Mississippi Solo: A River Quest

At 30 years old, Eddy Harris leaves his home in St. Louis and sets off into the chilly autumn for Lake Itasca. "I decided to canoe down the Mississippi River and to find out what I was made of," he writes. And Mississippi Solo is his stunning testament. Harris, who has authored Native Stranger, South of Haunted Dreams, and Still Life in Harlem, has been widely acclaimed since the first release of Mississippi Solo in 1988. It is greatly pleasing to see this important and stimulating first work revived. As the Mississippi grows from its tiny source to a wide and powerful flow, Harris gains confidence as a canoeist, faith in his endeavor, and an understanding of his varying identity as an African American traveling alone from north to south in the United States. His exact and brilliantly revealing prose shows us how each bend in this mighty river turns itself within the paddler, how person and river are entwined--and who is in charge.
With an astute ear for irony, philosophy, and wisdom, as well as truths about the river, Harris takes the reader through locks and lakes on the northern Mississippi to the wild and swift and meandering river south of St. Louis. Songs of joy, troughs of loneliness, terrific storms, birdsong, paranoia, friendly captains, wild dogs, and ghosts of slaves fill his pages. Then we face off with two hunters, two shotguns, and Harris's single pistol... and still the river leads him on to New Orleans. Like the river he travels, Harris cuts through to the core of himself and his country. Triumphant! --Byron Ricks
Book Description
Since the publication of his first book, Mississippi Solo, Eddy L. Harris has been praised for his travel writing. In this exciting reissue of his classic travelogue, readers will come to treasure the rich insightful prose that is as textured as the Mississippi River itself. They will be taken by the hand by an adventurer whose lifelong dream is to canoe the length of this mighty river, from Minnesota to New Orleans. The trip's dangers were legion for a Black man traveling alone, paddling from "where there ain't no black folks to where they still don't like us much." Barge waives loom large, wild dogs roam the wooded shores, and, in the Arkansas dusk, two shotgun-toting bigots nearly bring the author's dream to a bloody . Sustaining him through the hard weeks of paddling were the hundreds of people who reached out to share a small piece of his challenge. Mississippi Solo is a big, rollicking, brilliant book, a wonderful piece of American adventure, and an unforgettable story of a man testing his own limits.Customer Reviews:

Quality Writing.......2002-10-28
The writing is perceptive, insightful, and entertaining. His observations of the people he met along the river, and himself, come across as very honest. He doesn't portray himself as a hero or an expert, but as the person he really is. His dedication to completing the journey is tenuous, but his appreciation for the lasting value of the experience is sincere.
His perceptions on racial issues were objective and refreshing. Although he had preconceived notions on what he might encounter, (a black man in Nordic northern Minnesota and later in the Deep South) he judged people based on how they treated him, and the vast majority of people treated him with kindness and respect.
His descriptions of the river, towns, weather and scenery are also enjoyable, and the hardships and joys are described with equal eloquence.
I was impressed how such a greenhorn of an outdoorsman would have the boldness to tackle such an adventure. My only disappointment with the book is when he skipped some parts of the river. It was his journey to make, however, and he is honest about any shortcuts he took.
In short, this is a great book. It is worth reading to experience the journey vicariously and for the writing itself. You won't be disappointed.
