    Book Description

"Yamashita is so tuned into now, she can see tomorrow."-Booklist on Tropic of Orange, starred review

"Through the Arc of the Rainforest progresses toward an apocalyptic resolution that spreads out like a Bosch triptych reproduced by Gauguin. In this, her first novel, Ms. Yamashita presents a critique of human waste and stupidity that is fluid and poetic as well as terrifying."-The New York Times Book Review

Yamashita's innovative melding of fiction and essay explores issues such as labor, nationalism, and cultural diaspora. When the grandchildren of Japanese immigrants to Brazil move to Japan to assume the manual work native Japanese people no longer want, their need for cultural belonging, their homesickness for details of their birthplace, clash with the status quo. This book of hybrids-merging collage with text, story with history-opens a door onto one of the important issues of the new century.

Yamashita has a powerful story to tell about a community that is globally extensive and the freedom-physical and emotional-implied by that new geography.

Karen Tei Yamashita is a winner of the American Book Award and the Janet Heidinger Kafka Award. She is an assistant professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the University of California in Santa Cruz.

Part of Ramtha's Fireside Series collection library on the topic of the Observer Effect in terms of J.R.R. Tolkien's scene of Gandalf and the Balrog from "The Lord of the Rings."

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ramtha gives a powerful teaching by pointing to the subtle .......2005-04-10

In this Fireside Series, Ramtha is talking about the Observer and how the student can recognise it as Self by listening to the voices that are talking in his/her mind and ask the question, "Who's listening?" If one is hearing the inner dialogue then one is not the dialogue but is the one listening. This is Self as the Observer. I had to agree that until I put myself into a state of self-observation, I was not aware of this process that continually occurs. The explanation and examples show a clear picure of the process. Ramtha recommends reading JRR Tolkeins Lord of the Rings as it "tells of the wisdom of a truly great challenge--to be like Gandalf on the bridge and say "You cannot pass!" to the voices of the past and the emotions as they seek our approval by pleading their case. To be the Master of life is when we conquer the personality and become the Observer only--then we are awakened and free.
Ramtha describes the resulting biological cellular changes that occur when the master uses will to conquer the personality and how the science of quantum mechanics backs up the idea of man and woman being divine as the Observer.
I found the description of the emotions as feelings that we follow every day to be reconciled an eye-opener for me. I had never stopped to turn around and look at this process that was happening on automatic every day. This is a detailed look at the personality's modus operandi and a blueprint for transformation using personal will. It is packed with useful information and description on how we impact the atomic field to create our reality.

5 out of 5 stars The Power of the Will to Overcome Any Obstacle.......2004-10-16

I do very much enjoy reading Ramtha's books from the Fireside Collection. Some of them I like better than the others and this one is one of those I really like.

All of them though have more or less the same introduction and the glossary at the end, which leaves about 50 - 60 pages of actual new material in each book.

Each book revolves around one central message, which could even be summed up in one sentence, yet being an important message, the rest of the material in the book is meaningful and may be necessary to really drive the point home. And the point of these books is not just to read it, but to live the message.

This little book is powerful, because its central message is rooted in truth about the power of the will. When you are congruenty focused upon your outcome, when you are determined to have it more than anything else in the entire world, you can have that outcome and there is no power in the world that will be able to stop you.

The book uses the metaphor from the Gandalf's Battle on the Bridge in the Mines of Moria, but it has also reminded me of the movie John Q. and it has reminded me of instances in my own life when I was determined to have specific outcome and it didn't matter if I live or die in the process, because the only thing that mattered was the specific outcome.

Based on those experiences I totally resonated with and appreciated the point that Ramtha made in this book - when you are possessed of this will, even if you lost your body in the process, you'd still go for that outcome that is so important to you and you would be unstoppable. And it is true, to the onlookers you may looked like a possessed, frightening individual because you have no fear and nothing else exists for you other than that single thing upon which the entire energy of your being is totally focused to the point that you have become your outcome.

        4 out of 5 stars Powerful Teaching.......2004-06-09

This powerful Ramtha teaching opens with one of the most comprehensive toasts I have ever heard. I have memorized it and recite it to myself when I'm falling asleep at night because it addresses everything I could possibly want my life to contain, making for sweet dreams during the night.

Before Ramtha uses the story of Gandalf on the bridge (from "Lord of the Rings" fame) to illustrate the difference between our Observer and our personality (God self and human self), he tells the story of the Watcher at the Gate - No, not the Watcher at Moria, but a Master who observes the comings and goings of a great city, who uses what he observes to teach him about his own life. When we observe this master's observing, it becomes an exultant story whose ending gives hope to our own learning.

Ramtha uses Galdalf's battle to demonstrate a master's use of will to overcome whatever obstacle he may face. Ram tells a lyrical story here about fear and resolve, about clarity and will. And no Ramtha teaching about will would be complete without a conclusion in biophysics - practical understanding of how you change your world when you dig in your heels.

          Book Description

The Bachelor's Cat has all the earmarks of a classic love story a holiday gift that will rival The Christmas Box and The Notebook. When a somewhat introverted and self-serving bachelor artist finds a stray kitten at his doorstep, he decides to take her in to see if he can, indeed, sustain a lasting and loving relationship with another living creature. His on-again, off-again romance with a sexy but shallow girlfriend has left him emotionally cynical, and in no time the cat becomes the central focus of his life. Through her, the man rediscovers the meaning of loyalty and affection.

Out one evening at his neighborhood bar, the man strikes up conversation with a woman. She's not his usual type a little older (closer to his age, in fact) and on the heavy side but after several minutes they are caught up in a kind of exciting conversation he never experienced with his old girlfriend. As their relationship unfolds and blossoms in new and rewardi! ng ways, the man wavers between the sincerity and depth of the woman versus the frivolous and surface sexuality of his girlfriend, and it is his trusty cat who illuminates the right path. The Bachelor's Cat is charming, emotional and rife with life's important lessons.

5 out of 5 stars Beware the taking in of stray and needy cats..........2007-07-05

for you will be blessed. But are you ready for the blessings?
Lovely little book for cat owners and lovers, those thinking of owning one, and for every bachelor on a single woman's wish list.

I have done a great deal of companion animal rescue and placement in my life, and this little volume is way up there on my favorite list. I've just read it.

Owning an animal does change your life, and always in a positive way.

2 out of 5 stars Odd Writing Style.......2007-06-27

Couldn't get through more than the first chapter. This book was written so oddly, with very little dialogue. I don't know what it was about it that I didn't like, but I didn't. Maybe it was that reading it was akin to watching a movie through fog; everything was sort of...vague, including the feelings of the characters.

5 out of 5 stars A Cat Who Changed Lives.......2006-09-26

A good story works on a number of levels. "The Bachelor's Cat" is such a story, a joy to read as you learn about how a little gray ball of fear transforms a self-absorbed bachelor with a penchant for drama into someone approaching a genuine, joyful human being.

Along the way we examine the foibles of modern dating, and feel the razor's edge of real love and compassion.

"Cat-people" will love the story -- but it's a story with gentle lessons for all people, whether they love cats or not!

          Highly recommended!

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!.......2006-08-03

This book is absolutely wonderful! I have read it again, and again, and again! It made me feel good, and gave me hope and faith in everything. I love the style in which it was written. I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying it and coming away with spirit uplifted after having read it. I am glad this book was written!

          3 out of 5 stars The Bachelor's Cat.......2005-03-26

A cute story about a bachelor who could not find true love. He was looking in all of the wrong places. After he acquired a new cat, he realized the qualities he was looking for in a woman. Later an incident with his cat showed him how to say "yes" to true love and commitment.

This intimidatingly beautiful book on low-fat spa cooking takes the chi-chi out of spa food and actually makes it accessible to the average cook. Although the easy-to-prepare recipes in Canyon Ranch Cooking rely mostly on fresh produce and meats, Cook It Light expert Jeanne Jones offers alternatives to and substitutes for ingredients you might not find during certain times of the year (such as frozen berries and vegetables in place of their fresh counterparts). Also, many of the recipes incorporate carbohydrates and grains such as pastas, white and brown rice, couscous, and bulgur, which are easier to find year-round. The tone of the book is not restrictive or didactic--Jones really wishes to make the food accessible and friendly, as well as healthful--and the language used is positive and intended to empower the cook both in building a low-fat pantry and in trying new cooking methods. In addition, calorie and nutrient analyses of each dish are provided with portion sizes that are realistic and possible to visualize.

Jones suggests using spices to add dimension to dishes and, from cooking a number of them, we would have to agree--main courses such as Turkey Meatloaf and Polenta Crusted Sea Bass were a little bland. However, the corn salsa that accompanied the sea bass jazzed it up a bit and made it taste both fresh and healthy. The Banana Bread and Fruit Muffins, both of which used whole-wheat flour and minimal oil, were low-fat hits with office tasters. Garbanzo Nuts, or oven-baked, spiced garbanzo beans, are the perfect mid-afternoon snack fix. The salad and dressing ideas are all zesty and quick to make, but finding the fresh ingredients could prove challenging for most of the year. With more than 200 wonderful recipe and menu ideas, the book could end up paying for itself in more healthful and flavorful meals than one could get dining out. The "Canyon Ranch Weekend at Home" ideas in the back of the book will inspire more than a weekend of pampering oneself and eating with one's health in mind. --Gilia Angell

            Book Description

The two Canyon Ranch spas are rated No.1 and No.2 (they alternate positions) over and over by readers of the Conde Nast Traveler. Part of the allure are their stunning locations -- in the hills of Tucson, Arisona, and in the Berkshire mountains in Massachusetts -- but one of the best parts of a visit to Canyon Ranch is the food.

Jeanne Jones developed and supervised the Canyon Ranch menu, and in Canyon Ranch Cooking,  she offers everyone a chance to eat the spas' low-cal, low-fat delicious food. The recipes all have detailed nutritional breakdowns to help you plan a healthy meal with a lot of variety. Perhaps best of all are the tips and techniques to help enhance flavor without adding calories. Why does spa food taste so good when nearly all the fat has been removed? Jones reveals all the secrets -- such as adding citrus or vinegar to lift "flat" flavors; grilling over aromatic wood; marinating meat and vegetables; cooking at low temperatures for long periods to "marry" flavors; roasting rapidly for crispy crusts and tender interiors; using dried fruit for rich and creamy fat-free sauces; and much, much more. Try the Canyon Ranch Guacamole, Osso Bucco and Cheese Enchiladas; enjoy Chocolate Mint Cake and Cherry Streusel Pie. This is not a cuisine of deprivation -- the food is wonderful, and the recipes for making it easy and sensible.

This book can't give you a workout or a hike, but it does tell you how to plan your own spa weekend at home, with suggestions for exercise, relaxation, even theme parties for special Saturday night dining. The wonderful recipes and the luscious photographs are here to delight and inspire. With Canyon Ranch Cooking, the spa comes to you.

5 out of 5 stars EXACTLY what I was looking for!.......2007-08-07

I have been on the lookout for a really well put together gourmet cookbook on super healthy dishes - and I've finally found it! There are helpful pictures to accompany many of the entries, as well as a terrific section on stocking your pantry - thanks to the terrific advice in this book, I'm never caught shorthanded on food anymore! I've owned this book for two weeks now, and have made at least 10 delicious dishes from it! The meals are definitely healthy, but taste is not sacrificed! My husband, who is a very picky eater, has never complained about anything I make from this book. And my three year old and one year old love it all as well. The prep time on most of the recipes are above average, but they are definitely worth the effort!

5 out of 5 stars Bringing the best to your home.......2006-06-15

Canyon Ranch Cooking would be a great addition to your kitchen library. Everything is delicious, especially the veal piccata, lowfat borscht, and chocolate mint cake. This book makes planning and preparing heart smart meals a breeze - and the food is elagantly delicious

1 out of 5 stars Coffee table book.......2005-11-06

If you like books that have beautiful pictures, then get this one and put it on your coffee table. Do not bring it into the kitchen. The first recipe I tried failed, wasting the ingredients. Before trying a second, I checked with another cookbook and modified the Canyon recipe accordingly. The book lacks the little tips that are frequently necessary to make things perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, No Gimmick Cookbook.......2005-07-21

This book is just wonderful. The sheer number of recipes and variety alone is great, but the fact that the focus is on healthy food with little processing makes it a real winner. The recipes are usually simple, and some require only a few ingredients. My dad swears by the Canyon Ranch bread recipe, and the "Jet Fuel" dressing is really good.

5 out of 5 stars This Is A Must Have Cookbook.......2005-07-19

My sister who visits the Canyon Ranch Spa yearly gave me this cookbook. It was so fabulous that I bought my best friend and sister-in-law one for their birthdays. If you are trying to lose weight and love to eat, this is the book for you. I am a gourmet cook but was overweight. I lost 25lbs and thought my cooking days were over. The recipes in this book are so tasty. I can still have great dinner parties and serve healthy low fat meals. I could never afford to visit this Spa but trust me this cookbook is the next best thing!

This is a book for the serious historian of design or architecture -- while the many photographs are all oustanding, and, in particular, the photos from Country Life are truly some of the most extraordinary interior photos of the 20th century [notwithstanding the complaints of the prior reviewer] --- this is not in the least a coffee table book and those seeking such should look elsewhere. Rather, this superlative volume is a landmark in the intellectual history of Anglo-American design aesthetics and will likely not be equalled in the future. Of course, it's not at all surprising that the book is OOP --- the sophisticated audience for this subject is quite distinct from the acquisition-minded, typical subscriber to Architectural Digest.

                    Book Description

This is the life story of Rosa Cavalleri, an Italian woman who came to the United States in 1884, one of the peak years in the nineteenth-century wave of immigration. A vivid, richly detailed account, the narrative traces Rosa’s life in an Italian peasant village and later in Chicago. Marie Hall Ets, a social worker and friend of Rosa’s at the Chicago Commons settlement house during the years following World War I, meticulously wrote down her lively stories to create this book.
Rosa was born in a silk-making village in Lombardy, a major source of north Italian emigration; she first set foot in the United States at the Castle Garden immigrant depot on the tip of Manhattan. Her life in this country was hard and Ets chronicles it in eloquent detail—Rosa endures a marriage at sixteen to an abusive older man, an unwilling migration to a Missouri mining town, and the unassisted birth of a child, and manages to escape from a husband who tried to force her into prostitution. Rosa’s exuberant personality, remarkable spirit, and ability as a storyteller distinguish this book, a unique contribution to the annals of U.S. immigration.

                    5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put this down........2006-01-11

Being a member of a third generation Italian American family this book was very interesting to me. I felt like I was sitting next to Rosa as she went through her experiences. It brought back many memories. I finished the book in one weekend then mailed it to my Italian mother for her to enjoy. This is the first Italian American book I have read that was written from a women's point of view. I highly recommend it.

                    5 out of 5 stars A vivid tale.......2002-04-25

I stumbled across this book a month ago while writing a term paper on Italian immigration.
Rosa's tale is a poignant story. Her life story reveals her pride, faith and determination to survive in both the new and old world and her unwillingness to compromise her values.

                    I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Rosa's life is unforgetable, as is Rosa herself.......2001-01-31

First we need to thank Helen Barolini for resurrecting this precious book from obscurity. And for all those who complain there are no uplifting, inspiring tales about Italians, here in Rosa The Life Of An Italian Immigrant, is the proof that there certainly is.

Rosa would be the first to say she was no one special, just an ordinary peasant orphan who kept herself from starvation and worse by the faith of her religion and incredilby hard work for her entire life. Not that hard work is a surprise but the reality with which this uneducated woman shows us a plain ordinary life is as unforgettable as she is. God gave her the gift to tell the story of her life, to share laughs and to charm her new friends in wherever she landed, in a mining camp, a convent school or a silk factory.

From her early life as a child laborer who is beaten for mistakes in the silk mills of the 1860s to the uneducated young girl who is forced to marry a lousy, drunken bum, Rosa perseveres and triumphs with a long life and many friends who love her. You can't read this story with out falling in love with this precious woman as she endures life.

In 2001, it is hard to imagine that the cruelties Rosa suffered were every day occurences a century ago (or even less!), that is, nothing unusual. We have come a long way baby, but we had better not forget where we've come from.

Rosa The Life Of An Italian Immigrant will keep you rooted in the reality of our history and ancestry. Buy it, read it. Give it to your friends. Buy them their own copies! Give it as gifts to all the young women in your family.

Rosa's story must be remembered. Her story is unforgetable, so is Rosa Cavalleri.

Hey, Hollywood, I dare you to make a movie about this incredible woman!!!!
